- 1:55article about imposter syndrome. Right?
- 1:57And I have left that link in the description down below, as you
- 2:01can check that out, but more importantly resonated with me
- 2:04and I have this conversation where friend Connor from Khan
- 2:07award. He's a YouTuber as well.
- 2:10And we have this conversation off camera about like some of
- 2:13the times when you know, your your artistic person in a world
- 2:17where you're on a spectrum with other autistic people, right?
- 2:21And there are people who have high support needs and every we
- 2:24have a lot of support needs. Now I myself, I'd say I have low
- 2:27support needs than, you know, my friends kid who has nonverbal
- 2:30autism? So it's kind of like, okay.
- 2:32Well, they have higher support needs to me.
- 2:34Well, how does this all work? You know, what is the, what is
- 2:37the roundabout way that we're thinking about this?
- 2:39It's easy to forget that you know autism is a spectrum when
- 2:43you're just living day to day, you know, with what you're
- 2:45doing. But when you're in the other
- 2:46autistic people, then you realize that they support need
- 2:48agree to you know, and so sometimes you kind of have this
- 2:51feeling that you don't feel like a guilt like, oh, you know, I'm
- 2:54going around and I have this label, this diagnosis of autism
- 2:57and in terms of my diagnosis, you know compare that to
- 3:01somebody else. How does it differ, you know,
- 3:04like how does my diagnosis different from theirs and why
- 3:08are we allowed the same? I'm diagnosis, you know, if
- 3:11we're were obviously in different, you just support
- 3:15needs. Now.
- 3:15It comes from the fact that, you know, some people on the autism
- 3:17spectrum have verbal vocabulary. They able to hold down, jobs
- 3:19have marriages and children, the things like that, and they just
- 3:23go around their day and their life, doing things that, you
- 3:27know, cause them issues. They have work around some more,
- 3:29they have support in those areas.
- 3:30But, you know, they are issues in the areas of issues will be
- 3:33greatly different to somebody who may not be able to talk.
- 3:36They'll be nonverbal autistic person.
- 3:37They may have other intellectual.
- 3:39Loyalties as well as autism. And so, there are varying
- 3:42degree, which is obviously, why autism is called a spectrum.
- 3:45Now, impostor syndrome happens. When people find out that, you
- 3:49know, they say things like, you know, it's a weird, I'm starting
- 3:53a new job and I say, oh sorry. I'm on the Spectrum and they
- 3:56say, oh, you don't look artistic or do you know what?
- 4:00I never tell that you are autistic.
- 4:02Those kind of comments. Not only quite hurtful because
- 4:06it kind of devalues you and you think I will my diagnosis.
- 4:09This is not valuable. But it also then starts to you
- 4:12self-doubting, this imposter syndrome where you double think
- 4:15like oh my goodness. So, you know do I have these
- 4:18needs and and you know what's going on?
- 4:20And obviously you do you wouldn't have a diagnosis
- 4:22otherwise, but that imposter syndrome that that issue that's
- 4:25there that is presenting itself is because of external stimuli
- 4:29that's already playing on your mind because we live in an age,
- 4:32where autism is a spectrum and it's a big, beautiful Spectrum.
- 4:34We all should respect that. Now ways of avoiding.
- 4:37This is that, you know, if Jim Mason, you're not on the
- 4:40Spectrum, then just have respect and appreciation.
- 4:42That autism is a spectrum and that they'll be people who may
- 4:46need 24-hour care. And there's some people who may
- 4:50need just weekly care or weekly psychological intervention or
- 4:52counseling or whatever because it's how they are.
- 4:56You know, that was a very common phrase that people always used
- 4:59to say. They said that if you've ever
- 5:00met one autistic person, then you've only ever met one
- 5:03autistic person and this couldn't be more true, you know,
- 5:06autistic people are so individual and there's so So
- 5:09unique in how we are that, you can never really judge anything
- 5:13on your friends. Kid who happens to be in the
- 5:16autism spectrum or all your friend Larry, who's on the
- 5:18autism spectrum. We know that nobody's the same.
- 5:21And so, this imposter syndrome is a bit of a battle in your
- 5:25head. It's something that comes on
- 5:26more and more. As autistic people.
- 5:27We need to know that our support needs are, you know, our
- 5:31individual to us not just as, as a, you know, an autistic group
- 5:36of people other than, you know, people who are Oppa is as an
- 5:40individual on the autism spectrum because we all have
- 5:43individual needs and those individual needs need to be met
- 5:47and understood and accepted. You know, that's that's what it
- 5:50is. Now guys.
