- Adam Rutz: Comparison will kill your development if you let it. I know that because I lived it. My first year as a business owner, I spent way too much time comparing myself to everybody around me. Who was producing more? Who was making more money? Who looked more successful? Who seemed further ahead? And underneath all of that was this constant anxiety that maybe I wasn't good enough. I even convinced myself that everybody was watching me and judging how I was doing. The reality? Nobody was watching nearly as much as I thought they were. Everybody else was busy living their own life. But that difficult season eventually led me to one of the best decisions I ever made, hiring Brian Cain as my mental performance coach. That relationship helped completely change the direction of my life. It helped lead me towards sobriety. Help me develop a completely different relationship with myself and eventually help me fall in love with mental performance coaching. But one of the biggest lessons I've learned is this. You cannot build your life staring at somebody else's scoreboard. So stop comparing your income. Stop comparing your business. Stop comparing your body, your status, your career, your relationship, your athletic performance. Their circumstances are not your circumstances. Their timeline is not your timeline. Set a benchmark for where you are right now, then compete with that person. Can you become a little better? Are a little more disciplined, a little more focused, a little more prepared than you were yesterday, because the competition that matters most is not you versus everybody else. It's you versus the person you were yesterday. So today, stop looking sideways. Look forward, run your race, and go become somebody your previous self couldn't compete with. Mindset. Process, discipline, execution, that's mental performance daily.
