Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: This production is brought to you by the Recess Bell.
- 0:13Speaker 2: 43 seconds, Dallas down three. Second down at the Houston 12.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Prescott back, throwing, end zone!
- 0:21Speaker 1: Lamb! Lamb! Lamb to the post! C.D. Lamb! Unbelievable! Standing,
- 0:32Speaker 1: nobody's rushing.
- 0:34Speaker 2: He's heaving it now.
- 0:35Speaker 1: It is the Hail Mary shot.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Into the end zone it goes. The ball is knocked down. Incomplete.
- 0:42Speaker 1: The clock expires. The Cowboys have won the game.
- 0:47Speaker 2: The Cowboys have come back.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Happy anniversary, Houston!
- 0:53Speaker 2: It's the Recess Bell Sports, Cowboys After the Bell. I'm
- 0:56Speaker 2: your host, Eric Williams. Excited to finally be doing this.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Shout out to my boy, Joshua Yamahi, for allowing me
- 1:02Speaker 2: to do this on the Recess Bell Network, the network
- 1:05Speaker 2: for creatives. I'm excited to be doing this episode one
- 1:09Speaker 2: of Cowboys After the Bell. And look, you know what
- 1:13Speaker 2: that means. We got to break down the Cowboys, not
- 1:16Speaker 2: only after four weeks, not only after the win against
- 1:19Speaker 2: the Texans, but we have to break down Of course,
- 1:24Speaker 2: how they are going to look the rest of the season.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I expect them to look down the line for the
- 1:30Speaker 2: rest of the season. Now, starting, there's so many places
- 1:34Speaker 2: I could start, actually. So many different places I could start.
- 1:37Speaker 2: But I want to start here. I want to start
- 1:40Speaker 2: on the negative side. I do. And we're just going
- 1:42Speaker 2: to jump straight into it. There's no other way to
- 1:45Speaker 2: do this. There's no other way. Just jump straight into
- 1:47Speaker 2: the game. Get into the game. Get into the meat
- 1:50Speaker 2: and potatoes. Because the Cowboys took sole possession of Texas
- 1:55Speaker 2: in Houston against the Houston Texans. Cowboys now 2-2. Texans 0-4.
- 2:02Speaker 2: And this is not an ordinary 0-4 team. This is
- 2:05Speaker 2: not an ordinary 0-3 team coming into this game. They
- 2:09Speaker 2: shouldn't be 0-4 right now. They shouldn't. The defense, I
- 2:13Speaker 2: believe they're still one of the best units in the league.
- 2:16Speaker 2: They have some injuries right now. They were missing Aziz
- 2:19Speaker 2: Al-Shahar this game. Kenneth Murray, out of all linebackers, was
- 2:23Speaker 2: their starting linebacker. That's not what you want. Listen, the
- 2:27Speaker 2: Cowboy fans had to endure with that all last season.
- 2:30Speaker 2: We had to endure with Kenneth Murray being our starting
- 2:32Speaker 2: linebacker all last season. So I feel for the Texans
- 2:35Speaker 2: right now. I do. But we had to come in
- 2:38Speaker 2: and we had to show everybody who's the king of Texas.
- 2:41Speaker 2: And we did exactly that. And we did it in special,
- 2:45Speaker 2: special fashion. I mean, Dak Prescott, Don't pay attention to
- 2:49Speaker 2: the one touchdown that he had. Pay attention to the
- 2:52Speaker 2: fact that this is an MVP caliber performance because Javante Williams,
- 2:56Speaker 2: even though he had three touchdowns, all three of those
- 2:58Speaker 2: touchdowns were in the red zone. So what does that mean?
- 3:02Speaker 2: The offense was led down the field by Dak Prescott
- 3:05Speaker 2: and George Pickens, CeeDee Lamb, whoever else. Javante Williams had
- 3:09Speaker 2: some carries. But look, Dak Prescott had an MVP caliber performance.
- 3:15Speaker 2: But we're going to get into all of that on
- 3:16Speaker 2: the offensive side of the ball. But I want to start.
- 3:19Speaker 2: From some negative key takeaways from this game. Negative, I say.
- 3:24Speaker 2: First off, Brian Schottenheimer. What is this? I get it.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Your late game management against the Ravens. It was terrible
- 3:35Speaker 2: last week. It was terrible. Unacceptable. Unexplainable, in fact. We
- 3:40Speaker 2: were all speechless after the game wondering, what did you do?
- 3:44Speaker 2: You know what you did wrong. You knew you had
- 3:46Speaker 2: to clean some things up. And it didn't look like
- 3:48Speaker 2: he cleaned it up all the way. Especially at the
- 3:50Speaker 2: end of the second half. Where you send out Brandon
- 3:53Speaker 2: Aubrey to kick a field goal. Leaving time on the
- 3:55Speaker 2: clock for the Texans. 65 yard field goal. I get
- 4:01Speaker 2: Brandon Aubrey is probably one of the best kickers in
- 4:03Speaker 2: the league. It is arguable at this point. Even though
- 4:06Speaker 2: he's one of... I believe he's the highest paid kicker
- 4:10Speaker 2: in the league at this point. Look... You cannot fall
- 4:13Speaker 2: in love with the leg of Brandon Aubrey, especially with
- 4:16Speaker 2: the kind of defense that you have as they are
- 4:18Speaker 2: still trying to get their feet under them. You cannot.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I repeat, you cannot send Brandon Aubrey out there expecting
- 4:26Speaker 2: him to make kicks from 65 in his sleep. Yes,
- 4:29Speaker 2: I know. He should be able to because we've seen
- 4:32Speaker 2: him do it before. The fact of the matter is,
- 4:36Speaker 2: don't do it again because you cannot set your defense
- 4:39Speaker 2: up with short fields. You can't. You just can't do that.
- 4:44Speaker 2: You gave the Texans three points because you know your
- 4:46Speaker 2: defense can't go out there and stop anything. And actually,
- 4:50Speaker 2: the thing about the defense is they showed that they
- 4:53Speaker 2: can stop offenses. They literally have showed that they can
- 4:59Speaker 2: stop offenses. They stopped the Texans even though they scored
- 5:01Speaker 2: 30 points in this game. I understand that. I get that.
- 5:03Speaker 2: They showed that they can stop the Texans because there
- 5:06Speaker 2: was times where the Texans could have very well. They
- 5:10Speaker 2: could have scored a touchdown. They could have drove down
- 5:12Speaker 2: a field, scored touchdowns. They held a few field goals.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I'm looking right now, actually. Let's look at how many
- 5:20Speaker 2: field goals they were held to in this game. One
- 5:24Speaker 2: field goal in the first quarter, one field goal, two
- 5:26Speaker 2: field goals in the second quarter, and the rest were touchdowns.
- 5:32Speaker 2: But look, you can't ask for this defense to give
- 5:36Speaker 2: you much, especially with how depleted they are in the
- 5:39Speaker 2: secondary and the injuries that they have in. It's exciting
- 5:42Speaker 2: that guys will actually be coming back, but the game
- 5:45Speaker 2: management has to be better. It just has to be better.
- 5:47Speaker 2: There's no excuse for it. No excuse. And the one
- 5:50Speaker 2: thing that I heard listening to 105.3, the fan, as
- 5:54Speaker 2: you heard with the final call and the seating lamp
- 5:56Speaker 2: touchdown from 105.3, the fans, Brad Sham, play-by-play commentator for
- 6:02Speaker 2: the Dallas Cowboys. I was listening to RJ and Shan,
- 6:07Speaker 2: and the one thing that they said was, Is it
- 6:11Speaker 2: really Brian Schottenheimer making these decisions late in the first half,
- 6:15Speaker 2: late in games? It may be the clock management coordinator
- 6:21Speaker 2: or whatever the title is he has, Ryan Feeder. And
- 6:25Speaker 2: if you're leaving the decision up to him, I think
- 6:28Speaker 2: there seriously needs to be an evaluation made. Because you
- 6:32Speaker 2: are the head coach of this team. You need to
- 6:34Speaker 2: be making the final decisions. And you're the one getting
- 6:38Speaker 2: the slack for it anyway. You need to be making
- 6:40Speaker 2: the final decisions. There's no way you should be sending
- 6:42Speaker 2: out Brandon Aubrey to kick a 65-yard field goal after
- 6:46Speaker 2: maybe his confidence was rattled a little bit after getting
- 6:51Speaker 2: a field goal blocked. You can't have that happen. You
- 6:56Speaker 2: can't set your defense up with short fields like that.
- 6:58Speaker 2: You can't. You just can't do it. No, I genuinely
- 7:03Speaker 2: don't want to see it no more. I don't. Now,
- 7:05Speaker 2: if it's a game where it's the end of the
- 7:08Speaker 2: first half, Three seconds left on the clock. You're up
- 7:11Speaker 2: by three. You're up by six. Okay. Let Brandon Obey
- 7:15Speaker 2: try and sink it from 65. But in this point
- 7:17Speaker 2: where you're down, no. And you're giving the Texans back
- 7:22Speaker 2: with time on the clock still. And they took advantage
- 7:25Speaker 2: of it. They scored their own field goal and went
- 7:27Speaker 2: in the half up 10. Here's the thing about the
- 7:30Speaker 2: Cowboys and going up and having a deficit of 10
- 7:33Speaker 2: at halftime. A deficit of 10 or more at halftime.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Before this game against the Texans, the Cowboys were 0-19
- 7:40Speaker 2: in the Dak Prescott era when they have a deficit.
- 7:45Speaker 2: How am I messing up this word? A deficit of
- 7:48Speaker 2: 10 or more going into halftime. Just so happened to
- 7:54Speaker 2: be Sunday was their first win. Grabbing a win, coming
- 7:57Speaker 2: out into the second half, down 10 points. So I
- 8:04Speaker 2: want to see better clock management from Brian Schottenheimer. I
- 8:09Speaker 2: can't ask for it more. I'm screaming at the top
- 8:11Speaker 2: of my lungs for it, please, because we can't have
- 8:15Speaker 2: poor clock management against teams like the Packers because they
- 8:17Speaker 2: will take advantage of it. Matt LaFleur literally will out-coach you,
- 8:21Speaker 2: and even though he has been looking like he's on
- 8:23Speaker 2: the hot seat himself, he will out-coach you still. I've
- 8:27Speaker 2: seen it time and time again. I'm not saying that
- 8:30Speaker 2: I'm afraid of Matt LaFleur or anything, but you can't
- 8:33Speaker 2: have this happen against Green Bay. You can't have this
- 8:35Speaker 2: happen against Arizona because I believe Arizona is no pushover.
- 8:38Speaker 2: You can't. You definitely can't have this happen against Philly
- 8:41Speaker 2: because they take advantage of their opportunities so well, which
- 8:46Speaker 2: it looks different this year, but they take advantage of
- 8:50Speaker 2: their opportunities. This is still the Eagles we're talking about.
- 8:52Speaker 2: You can't have that happen. So that's all I ask
- 8:56Speaker 2: of Brian Schottenheimer. Everything else, great. Cool. You're letting offense run.
- 9:00Speaker 2: You're letting them do what they do. You're listening to us.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Run the ball more in the red zone. He's doing that. Obviously,
- 9:06Speaker 2: you see that with Javante Williams having three touchdowns and
- 9:10Speaker 2: having all three of those touchdowns in the red zone. Look,
- 9:15Speaker 2: just please. It's scaring me. It's scaring me.
- 9:20Speaker 1: It is.
- 9:21Speaker 2: But after that loss against the Ravens, Brian Schottenheimer had
- 9:24Speaker 2: this to say about the Cowboys and how they responded
- 9:27Speaker 2: after that tough, gut-wrenching loss against the Ravens. There was
- 9:31Speaker 2: never finger-pointing one way or the other, and they just
- 9:35Speaker 2: went back to work. And we're going to do it
- 9:38Speaker 2: again here in however many days. I can't count right now.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Is it five days? Four? Yeah. So we'll do it
- 9:45Speaker 2: again in four days.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And you know what? We can't wait.
- 9:48Speaker 2: And that's the attitude I want them to have. You
- 9:50Speaker 2: are only as good as your head coach. And the
- 9:54Speaker 2: attitude that he has to have right now, take it
- 9:57Speaker 2: one game at a time, and let's go get a dub.
- 10:00Speaker 2: the interesting thing about this defense is they have been
- 10:02Speaker 2: improving and you may not see it all the way
- 10:05Speaker 2: on the stat sheet either you may not but here's
- 10:10Speaker 2: the yards per carry average from each starting running back
- 10:13Speaker 2: starting in week one against the giants where cam's got
- 10:15Speaker 2: a boot average 4.5 yards per carry then you go
- 10:19Speaker 2: to week two Jacory Krosky, Merritt, he had 3.6 yards
- 10:24Speaker 2: per carry. Derrick Henry, he had 3.4 yards per carry.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And then David Montgomery, even though the Texans, they don't
- 10:32Speaker 2: really run the ball well, he had 2.4 yards per carry.
- 10:36Speaker 2: So it's good to see that they are slowly but
- 10:40Speaker 2: surely improving as we're getting guys back. I mean, you
- 10:43Speaker 2: talk about getting Malik Hooker back. The back end of
- 10:46Speaker 2: that defense looked much better. It did. And the one
- 10:52Speaker 2: thing that I'm worried about right now is De'Ron Bland.
- 10:56Speaker 2: I'm worried about De'Ron Bland because now you have Joey
- 10:59Speaker 2: Porter Jr., which is, I couldn't be happier. Especially after
- 11:03Speaker 2: seeing that performance from De'Ron Bland yesterday. It was terrible.
- 11:06Speaker 2: It was terrible. How do you give up a 50
- 11:10Speaker 2: plus yard pass to Xavier Hutchinson? Just how do you
- 11:13Speaker 2: do that? Oh, I'm sorry, Jalen Knoll. You give him
- 11:18Speaker 2: a 50-plus yard pass, and Jalen, okay, he's good, but
- 11:21Speaker 2: you don't expect that from Deron Bland with the money
- 11:25Speaker 2: that he's being paid. And some people are really starting
- 11:28Speaker 2: to come for him because he's been playing very short
- 11:32Speaker 2: of his contract. Very short of his contract. People are
- 11:36Speaker 2: starting to come for him now because the expectations that
- 11:40Speaker 2: we once had for Deron Bland are no longer there.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Now we just want the guy to play serviceable football.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Don't give up any big plays. He's giving up big plays.
- 11:51Speaker 2: He's doing that. And this might be a blessing in disguise,
- 11:54Speaker 2: having Joey Porter Jr. now, because in the snaps that
- 11:56Speaker 2: he played, which he was on a snap count against Houston,
- 12:01Speaker 2: he shut down his side of the field. So you
- 12:05Speaker 2: look at second-year players, Yvonne Revel, he should be on
- 12:08Speaker 2: the outside. But you still have Kobe Durant, who's injured
- 12:11Speaker 2: right now, which he may play against. the buccaneers but
- 12:15Speaker 2: they might not rush him back just yet um look
- 12:19Speaker 2: it's it's there's going to be conversations about where we
- 12:22Speaker 2: plug certain guys and deron bland this is why i
- 12:25Speaker 2: say it might be a blessing in disguise because where
- 12:28Speaker 2: he started out with the cowboys was in the slot
- 12:31Speaker 2: and that's where he really excelled now moving deron bland
- 12:34Speaker 2: back to the slot that may help you a lot
- 12:37Speaker 2: it may help you a lot and he's a man-to-man
- 12:39Speaker 2: quarter so he can play man-to-man with somebody in the
- 12:41Speaker 2: slot hopefully Because he has regressed. You can see it
- 12:47Speaker 2: due to injuries and stuff in that sort. Which, you know,
- 12:50Speaker 2: it's not an excuse, but it's just the truth. He's
- 12:53Speaker 2: regressed due to injuries. But moving him back to the slot,
- 12:58Speaker 2: I really like that move for him. Because he's not
- 13:01Speaker 2: your typical shutdown corner. He's not going to shut down
- 13:05Speaker 2: your best wide receivers. Just not. He's not. But now
- 13:08Speaker 2: we got that guy in Joey Porter Jr. for at
- 13:09Speaker 2: least the rest of the season. He may be a rental.
- 13:12Speaker 2: He may not be. I'm not here to talk about
- 13:14Speaker 2: that right now, though, because we still got to worry
- 13:16Speaker 2: about George Pickens. We do. And we'll get to George
- 13:19Speaker 2: Pickens and why he's not getting as much targets and
- 13:23Speaker 2: stuff in that sort. But staying on the topic of
- 13:26Speaker 2: the defense, the pass rush finally seemed to show up yesterday. Finally.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Quentin Williams with a sack. Rashawn Gary with a sack.
- 13:36Speaker 2: I mean, seeing Rashawn Gary get a sack.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Whoa.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Are we serious? Rashawn Gary got a sack? Yeah. So
- 13:44Speaker 2: the thing that I ask of the defense, I want
- 13:47Speaker 2: to see more of Malachi Lawrence because he is one
- 13:51Speaker 2: of the highest rated pass rushers from the rookie class
- 13:56Speaker 2: this year. And I just, I want to see more
- 14:00Speaker 2: of him out there. Even though it might be raw,
- 14:03Speaker 2: it might be raw talent. You know, he's a prospect.
- 14:06Speaker 2: You got to see what you got in him. I
- 14:08Speaker 2: want to see him out there. I want to see
- 14:09Speaker 2: him making plays because I know he can make plays.
- 14:12Speaker 2: See it. Look, Jayshon Barham, he got thrown into a
- 14:15Speaker 2: spot that he probably wasn't expecting to be thrown into.
- 14:19Speaker 2: But look at him now. He's one of the best
- 14:23Speaker 2: rookies out of this class as well. Probably his second
- 14:27Speaker 2: best linebacker out of this class, maybe third best. Because
- 14:30Speaker 2: Jacob Rodriguez, he's making a killing over there with Miami.
- 14:36Speaker 2: But I like the rookie class that we got, especially with.
- 14:41Speaker 2: My boy Caleb Downs. Finally moving him back to safety.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Letting him play back there. Seeing the whole offense from
- 14:48Speaker 2: the vantage point that he saw it all his time
- 14:50Speaker 2: in college. Because I'll tell you the truth. I really
- 14:52Speaker 2: didn't like him playing in the slot. I didn't. And
- 14:56Speaker 2: this is another thing that I was just screaming from
- 14:58Speaker 2: the top of my lungs. Move Caleb Downs back to
- 15:02Speaker 2: his original spot. And you had no choice but to
- 15:04Speaker 2: with Malik Hooker coming back. You want the back end
- 15:07Speaker 2: of that defense to be covered. Nobody can throw beyond
- 15:10Speaker 2: 30 yards past you.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Nobody.
- 15:13Speaker 2: That's what you want it to be. Now, sadly, Deron Bland,
- 15:17Speaker 2: like I just said, he gave up a 50-plus-yard pass
- 15:21Speaker 2: to Jalen Noble, and the rest was history. But luckily,
- 15:26Speaker 2: we came out with the win because your offense was
- 15:28Speaker 2: able to put up more points than the Houston Texans' offense.
- 15:32Speaker 2: But I'm going to stand by that. I'm going to
- 15:35Speaker 2: stand with the fact that the defense is getting better
- 15:38Speaker 2: slowly but surely. And we're going to have guys coming back.
- 15:41Speaker 2: And this is actually a problem you're going to have.
- 15:43Speaker 2: And it's a good problem to have. Where are you
- 15:45Speaker 2: going to plug certain guys when certain guys start coming back?
- 15:48Speaker 2: When you get your starting safety Jalen Thompson back off
- 15:51Speaker 2: the injured reserve. When you get Kobe Durant back. When
- 15:54Speaker 2: you get DeMarvion Overstrom back. Which the verdict with DeMarvion
- 15:58Speaker 2: Overstrom right now is that he's going to be moving
- 16:00Speaker 2: to a spot where we saw him play in the
- 16:02Speaker 2: Mike Zimmer defense where he was playing Will Linebacker. And
- 16:05Speaker 2: he had a 5.5 sacks in 13 games before he
- 16:07Speaker 2: tore his ACL. And I believe that's the best spot
- 16:11Speaker 2: for him. Because you just may be asking him to
- 16:14Speaker 2: do too much. As the Michael Linebacker. That's probably just
- 16:18Speaker 2: not even a spot for him. If we're just being
- 16:22Speaker 2: brutally honest. Jay Sean Barham looks like he has it covered.
- 16:27Speaker 2: And Barham just may look 100 times better with DeMarvion
- 16:31Speaker 2: Overshow next to him. No disrespect to D. Winters but.
- 16:35Speaker 2: He doesn't look like what we at least thought he
- 16:38Speaker 2: would look like as he had five tackles last, not
- 16:42Speaker 2: last week, but against the Texans in his game. But yeah, look,
- 16:48Speaker 2: it's a good problem to have, having players come back
- 16:50Speaker 2: off an injured reserve. Hopefully you can have everybody healthy
- 16:52Speaker 2: at one time because that's what you want. You want
- 16:55Speaker 2: to see this defense play all together. You want to
- 16:57Speaker 2: see what you can really have in this defense. And
- 17:00Speaker 2: the defense, you know, Looking at it now, yeah, you
- 17:05Speaker 2: might say, oh, yeah, this is the worst defensive unit
- 17:07Speaker 2: in the league. One of the worst. Definitely a top
- 17:11Speaker 2: 30 defense in the league. And that's not saying much, obviously.
- 17:14Speaker 2: But their bottom 25 defense in the league, okay. The injuries.
- 17:21Speaker 2: And everybody has injuries. I get it. The 49ers have
- 17:24Speaker 2: a ton of injuries. But I believe when you get
- 17:27Speaker 2: this defense going, and everybody's healthy on the field, and
- 17:30Speaker 2: they finally get their feet fully under them because you're
- 17:33Speaker 2: starting to see they're starting to get their feet under them.
- 17:35Speaker 2: They just have to limit the slow starts like they
- 17:38Speaker 2: did against the Texans because how the Texans came out,
- 17:42Speaker 2: it was totally unacceptable. I don't want to see that again.
- 17:44Speaker 2: I don't, especially with the offense like the Texans. The
- 17:48Speaker 2: Texans' offense is nothing special. I mean, it's literally one-dimensional
- 17:53Speaker 2: because they can't run the ball. The Texans only had
- 17:56Speaker 2: 62 rushing yards yesterday on 19 carries. And they averaged 3.3
- 18:02Speaker 2: yards per carry. And of course, they had a touchdown
- 18:05Speaker 2: on the ground. But the Texans' offense is nothing special.
- 18:08Speaker 2: There's nothing to really gloss over or anything like that.
- 18:11Speaker 2: I don't want to see it again. I don't want
- 18:14Speaker 2: to see that again. Because they are a one-dimensional offense.
- 18:18Speaker 2: And if I have to see that again out of
- 18:20Speaker 2: another one-dimensional offense, it's probably the Buccaneers, which... they're probably
- 18:25Speaker 2: relying on a lot of their run game in which
- 18:27Speaker 2: they will be probably on Thursday with rookie quarterback Jalen
- 18:31Speaker 2: Daniels out there because it's pretty certain that Baker Midfield
- 18:34Speaker 2: won't be playing because there's no way he's going to
- 18:38Speaker 2: be able to grip a football by Thursday. He had
- 18:40Speaker 2: a cast on his hand on Sunday. There's no way
- 18:42Speaker 2: he's just going to magically be able to grip a
- 18:45Speaker 2: football and you're going to be playing Jalen Daniels. So
- 18:49Speaker 2: mostly you're going to have to be worried about the
- 18:51Speaker 2: run game and You know, hopefully in walkthroughs and everything,
- 18:54Speaker 2: that's what they're keying on and loading up the box
- 18:58Speaker 2: and stuff like that. And maybe you get DeMarvin Overshawn
- 19:01Speaker 2: back in this game and Kobe Durant, hopefully. But yeah,
- 19:08Speaker 2: I don't want to see that no more in this
- 19:10Speaker 2: defense because now I'm going to start having expectations the
- 19:13Speaker 2: more they get better. Because they will get better. Preseason
- 19:17Speaker 2: for the Cowboys is officially over. We're four weeks into this.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Four weeks in. Preseason is over. We're past it. What
- 19:28Speaker 2: do I make of this team now, four weeks into
- 19:31Speaker 2: the season? That's the question that I have to ask myself.
- 19:35Speaker 2: The offense, great. The defense, now you're really going to
- 19:40Speaker 2: start seeing what they are. You are. Even though you
- 19:43Speaker 2: have some favorable matchups, which you're probably going to be
- 19:45Speaker 2: favored in against the Packers, you're definitely going to be
- 19:48Speaker 2: favored against the Buccaneers. you might be favored against the
- 19:52Speaker 2: Philadelphia Eagles depending on if Saquon Barkley plays and Devonta
- 19:56Speaker 2: Smith guys in that sort and how they look against
- 20:01Speaker 2: Jacksonville look you're probably going to be favored in these
- 20:07Speaker 2: next four games or so so Maybe next five games.
- 20:12Speaker 2: So we got to start taking advantage of our opportunities
- 20:16Speaker 2: to get these wins because you should have had a
- 20:18Speaker 2: win against the Ravens and you should be 3-1 right now.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I'm not even going to say that we should have
- 20:23Speaker 2: beat the Giants. I'm not going to say that. I'm
- 20:25Speaker 2: not going to waste my time here and say that.
- 20:27Speaker 2: But you should have beat the Ravens if the game
- 20:30Speaker 2: management was better. But it's good to see the offense rolling.
- 20:35Speaker 2: They're clicking. And I think I'm going to start my
- 20:38Speaker 2: conversation about the offense here by saying that the Cowboys
- 20:41Speaker 2: might be a second half offensive team. And I say
- 20:45Speaker 2: that because the Cowboys have only punted one time in
- 20:50Speaker 2: the second half of all of their games. Out of
- 20:52Speaker 2: all of their games, all of the first four games,
- 20:55Speaker 2: they've only punted one time and their first punt came
- 20:57Speaker 2: against the Houston Texans, which the Texans, you know, I'm
- 21:03Speaker 2: going to say it, the Texans coming into the season
- 21:06Speaker 2: were my favorite defensive unit And they were a lot
- 21:09Speaker 2: of your favorite defensive units as well. So, look, I'm
- 21:13Speaker 2: going to take that with a grain of salt. Okay,
- 21:16Speaker 2: the Texans forced us to punt. But other than that,
- 21:20Speaker 2: on every drive in the second half, the Cowboys have
- 21:22Speaker 2: at least scored a field goal. I mean, going back
- 21:26Speaker 2: to the Giants game, they had the ball twice in
- 21:28Speaker 2: the second half. Both times they had the ball, they
- 21:30Speaker 2: scored a touchdown. You go to the Commanders game. Against
- 21:34Speaker 2: the Commanders, they scored two touchdowns and two field goals.
- 21:38Speaker 2: So you scored on four out of four drives. And
- 21:41Speaker 2: then against the Ravens, you scored on three out of
- 21:45Speaker 2: three drives, two touchdowns and a field goal. And then,
- 21:48Speaker 2: of course, against the Texans, you had four touchdowns. Four touchdowns.
- 21:53Speaker 2: 14 points in the third quarter, 14 points in the
- 21:56Speaker 2: fourth quarter. And you scored on four out of five
- 21:59Speaker 2: drives in the second half. This just may be a
- 22:01Speaker 2: second half team. And it's actually kind of.
- 22:07Speaker 2: It's really exciting to see because we haven't really seen
- 22:11Speaker 2: a Cowboys team really be a second half team in
- 22:15Speaker 2: a long time. Haven't really seen it. Usually, you know,
- 22:19Speaker 2: they stay in games, they get out the quick starts.
- 22:22Speaker 2: But to see them playing at the level that they're
- 22:25Speaker 2: playing on offense right now, especially with the game that
- 22:28Speaker 2: CeeDee Lamb had yesterday against the Texans, 17 receptions, 189
- 22:33Speaker 2: yards and a touchdown. And I'll say Dak Prescott, he
- 22:39Speaker 2: had an MVP caliber performance. I'm going to live by that. 32-45,
- 22:42Speaker 2: 335 through the air, and a touchdown. Don't pay attention
- 22:48Speaker 2: to the touchdown because Javante Williams, he had three touchdowns, yes.
- 22:53Speaker 2: We get that. But Javante Williams, all of his touchdowns
- 22:56Speaker 2: came from the red zone. He was inside the red
- 22:59Speaker 2: zone already when he scored all his touchdowns. Inside of
- 23:02Speaker 2: 10 yards, might I add. So how do you get
- 23:05Speaker 2: down the field to even get in that position? Prescott
- 23:08Speaker 2: is leading you down the field. And that's the part
- 23:10Speaker 2: that people are not paying enough attention to. Brian Schotthammer
- 23:13Speaker 2: just did what everybody asked him to do. Run the
- 23:16Speaker 2: ball more inside the red zone. Get it to Javante
- 23:18Speaker 2: Williams because he's a bell cow. He's not going to
- 23:21Speaker 2: go down easy. He's going to run through your best
- 23:24Speaker 2: defender if he can. Literally, that's what it is with
- 23:28Speaker 2: Javante Williams. And Schottie did what everybody asked him to do.
- 23:33Speaker 2: And It paid off. Yes, you got the win. But
- 23:36Speaker 2: did it pay off for Dak Prescott? No, it didn't.
- 23:38Speaker 2: And his MVP campaign, you know, I don't think it
- 23:42Speaker 2: affects it. Because if you really watch the game, if
- 23:45Speaker 2: you pay attention to the games, you see that Dak
- 23:47Speaker 2: Prescott is moving down the field against everybody's favorite defensive unit. So, look,
- 23:54Speaker 2: I don't have anything bad to say about the offense.
- 23:57Speaker 2: I don't. Actually, you know what? The one bad, a
- 24:02Speaker 2: couple bad things, actually. Let's start with Terrence Dale. He's
- 24:05Speaker 2: the weak link of this offensive line. On the other side,
- 24:10Speaker 2: on the good part of the offensive line, on the
- 24:12Speaker 2: other side, first, you're getting Tyler Smith back against the Buccaneers.
- 24:15Speaker 2: That's another player coming back from injury, off the injury reserve.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Finally getting your all-pro left guard back. But Tyler Guyton
- 24:23Speaker 2: hasn't allowed a sack through four games. I mean, he
- 24:26Speaker 2: held his own against Daniel Hunter and Will Anderson. He
- 24:30Speaker 2: held his own against Bryant Burns. He held his own against... Whoever,
- 24:35Speaker 2: Odafe Owe, if he's on the Ravens. Like, look, Tyler
- 24:42Speaker 2: Guyon is really surprising me. Really surprising me.
- 24:47Speaker 1: And I'm.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Happy to see it. I'm very happy to see it.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I couldn't be happier. Odafe Owe is on the Commanders, actually.
- 24:56Speaker 2: But yes, still, as my point, I'm very happy to
- 25:01Speaker 2: see Tyler Guyon playing at the level that he is.
- 25:03Speaker 2: His problem, I feel like his whole career so far
- 25:06Speaker 2: as a Dallas Cowboy was just staying on the field,
- 25:08Speaker 2: being healthy, being there. Now you see the consistency of
- 25:12Speaker 2: him being on the field, knock on wood, because we
- 25:17Speaker 2: can't have him get hurt. Knock on wood. But yes,
- 25:22Speaker 2: Tyler Guyton, he's definitely holding his own right now. With
- 25:24Speaker 2: Tyler Smith coming back, that just makes it even better
- 25:26Speaker 2: for not only the pass protection, but the run game.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Now you're really going to see those holes start to
- 25:33Speaker 2: pop open. And Javante Williams, you're going to see that
- 25:35Speaker 2: Javante Williams from last season, at least early on from
- 25:39Speaker 2: last season, where he was popping runs, getting 100-yard games.
- 25:43Speaker 2: The reason why he had 1,200 yards last season. So
- 25:48Speaker 2: I'm excited for this offensive line. I'm just not excited
- 25:50Speaker 2: for Terrence Dillon on that right side. Hopefully he can
- 25:53Speaker 2: start to shore that up. I don't know if he
- 25:55Speaker 2: has to get in there with the coaches and fix something.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Whatever the case may be, just... Get it done. Get
- 26:02Speaker 2: it fixed. Please. That's all I can ask of Terrence Dill.
- 26:07Speaker 2: But another thing on the negative side of the offensive ball,
- 26:11Speaker 2: Jake Ferguson, he may be on the chopping block. Like,
- 26:15Speaker 2: not this season, but when we get into the offseason,
- 26:19Speaker 2: after this season is over, he just may be on
- 26:21Speaker 2: the chopping block. And I say this just because he
- 26:24Speaker 2: can't block. And he's not really giving us the production
- 26:27Speaker 2: that we expect him to give offensively, catching the ball
- 26:30Speaker 2: through the air. So if you can't provide production for
- 26:34Speaker 2: the money that you're getting paid on the offensive side
- 26:36Speaker 2: of the ball, catching balls, pause. But you're not giving
- 26:41Speaker 2: us the production we thought that we had in you.
- 26:45Speaker 2: And you're not a very good blocker at all. And
- 26:50Speaker 2: the Cowboys gave Brevin Sport. Brevin Sport. I'm mixing up
- 26:56Speaker 2: his last names. I'm putting together his last name, basically.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Brevin Spanford. They actually paid him before the start of
- 27:03Speaker 2: the season. Don't have the exact contract details, but I
- 27:07Speaker 2: believe he's locked in for the next three years with
- 27:09Speaker 2: the Dallas Cowboys. Look, Brevin Spanford, he might be a
- 27:12Speaker 2: diamond in the rough for you because not only is
- 27:15Speaker 2: he a big boy, like there was a play against
- 27:17Speaker 2: the Ravens where his yards after catch, it meant something.
- 27:21Speaker 2: He caught the ball, fought through contract, got a first down.
- 27:26Speaker 2: And not only that, he can provide the production on offense.
- 27:30Speaker 2: There's no question about that. But he can also block
- 27:34Speaker 2: with the best in him. Like I've seen him on
- 27:36Speaker 2: special teams make a play. I forgot what game it was,
- 27:39Speaker 2: but he made a huge play. It wasn't a huge play,
- 27:41Speaker 2: but it was a huge tackle. Like he's a tough nugget.
- 27:45Speaker 2: He's a tough nugget. I really like Brevin Spann for it.
- 27:48Speaker 2: So Jake Ferguson, watch out for your job here. But
- 27:52Speaker 2: as far as his offense goes, I don't have any
- 27:55Speaker 2: complaints outside of that. Just the game management, that has
- 27:58Speaker 2: to get better. And that's on the coaching. As long
- 28:01Speaker 2: as the game management is much better, then I believe
- 28:04Speaker 2: this Cowboys offense and this Cowboys team with the production
- 28:08Speaker 2: that you may get out of the defense as we
- 28:10Speaker 2: go game by game and we get later on into
- 28:13Speaker 2: the season, the defense will definitely get better. All we
- 28:15Speaker 2: ask of them is to be average. That's it. That's
- 28:20Speaker 2: all we ask of them. As long as they can
- 28:22Speaker 2: be average, you can give this Dallas team a far
- 28:25Speaker 2: firm chance To not only win the NFC East. But
- 28:28Speaker 2: to compete and make it to an NFC championship. Because
- 28:32Speaker 2: you see this offense can be one of the best.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Because right now they are putting up record numbers. Through
- 28:39Speaker 2: four games. They are putting up record numbers. So I
- 28:43Speaker 2: love what I see out this offense. Not a complaint
- 28:45Speaker 2: out of me. Outside of Terrence Dale and Jake Ferguson.
- 28:48Speaker 2: But I don't want people to be worried about George Pickens.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Don't be worried about George Pickens. He's happy. He's okay.
- 28:57Speaker 2: He's not a locker room cancer. He's not going to
- 28:59Speaker 2: start being a diva and asking for the ball. Look,
- 29:02Speaker 2: as long as he's winning, as long as he has
- 29:05Speaker 2: a chance to make the playoffs, play in the playoffs,
- 29:08Speaker 2: win a playoff game, he's going to have his games.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Trust me. You're going to see that 150-yard game out
- 29:13Speaker 2: of him this season. Maybe a couple of times. You
- 29:17Speaker 2: may see it against Tampa Bay because Antoine Winfield, he's
- 29:20Speaker 2: not going to be playing. So the backing of that
- 29:22Speaker 2: defense is not really shored up right now. So I
- 29:26Speaker 2: I expect him to have a big game as well
- 29:29Speaker 2: as CeeDee Lamb. Both receivers just may have a big game.
- 29:32Speaker 2: But I'm not worried about George Pickens at all. I'm not.
- 29:36Speaker 2: I think he's totally fine. He's not a locker room canceler.
- 29:40Speaker 2: And he just wants to go out there and play.
- 29:42Speaker 2: That's it. Now, may this affect his contract numbers? Maybe
- 29:47Speaker 2: the Cowboys might have something to say about, you know, oh,
- 29:51Speaker 2: you only had two receptions. Well, he only had three
- 29:53Speaker 2: targets against the Texans. And the two catches that he had?
- 29:58Speaker 2: Huge catches. Huge catches. So I'm just going to say
- 30:03Speaker 2: I'm excited for what he's going to do further on
- 30:07Speaker 2: in this season as the season progresses. Because he's going
- 30:11Speaker 2: to have that game where he's going to break out.
- 30:13Speaker 2: And it's going to lead to a streak of games
- 30:17Speaker 2: where he's going to break out. Along with CeeDee Lamb.
- 30:19Speaker 2: And how CeeDee Lamb looks right now as the leading
- 30:22Speaker 2: receiver in the league. Man. This offense is humming. That's humming.
- 30:29Speaker 2: And now you're getting back your top offense alignment. I
- 30:32Speaker 2: don't have a bad thing to say about this offense
- 30:34Speaker 2: right now. It's just the defense, they got to shore
- 30:36Speaker 2: things up. And it looks like they are. It looks
- 30:39Speaker 2: like they're getting better week after week. And it looks
- 30:42Speaker 2: like they're going to keep that foot on the pedal.
- 30:44Speaker 2: You're getting back to Marvin Overshawn. You're going to start
- 30:46Speaker 2: getting guys back off the injury report. And we expect
- 30:50Speaker 2: to see the defense at least look average. So I'm
- 30:53Speaker 2: going to end it off here. I'm your host, Eric Williams.
- 30:57Speaker 2: on the Recess Bell Sports Cowboys after the bell. Now
- 31:00Speaker 2: to do it for episode number one on the Recess
- 31:02Speaker 2: Bell Network. I'll see you in the next one as
- 31:05Speaker 2: we should be back to preview Buccaneers in Dallas against
- 31:10Speaker 2: the Cowboys Thursday night. I'll see you then.
