- 0:00The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network. Welcome to another
- 0:06episode of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean de Weird,
- 0:11and I'm justin Lemmey. Good to see all. Uh all, fresh from
- 0:14a nice Father's Day weekend last weekend? Yeah? Hell? Was it really?
- 0:22Why was it? Hell? Why was it? Heck? Well,
- 0:26I mean I had to work most of it. Oh oh yeah. Were
- 0:30you guys really busy at the the old water park there? Yeah? No,
- 0:34it was pretty busy. But you, I mean, I want to
- 0:36hear about Sean's camping to have honestly forget about me because I'm just gonna be
- 0:39a Debbie downer. Sean, you went camping like that, I'm job.
- 0:44Yeah. So we went to uh a state park we have been to here
- 0:47Indiana called Mississawana State Park. It's a recreation area just literally in the middle
- 0:53of Indiana. It's very rural, let's just put it that way. But
- 0:57when we had a good time, we took a camper down there and it
- 0:59was me, my buddy, Steve, Caitlin, and Max and we just
- 1:03it's Miking did some disc golf. Now, when you say disc golf,
- 1:06did did you was like the camground, did it actually have a disc golf
- 1:10course or did you just kind of actually have a disc golf course there?
- 1:15Yeah? Sweet? Oh man, now, yes, I use sent picture.
- 1:19What really surprised me more than anything is, uh, how big Max
- 1:23has gotten. He's huge? What happened? It's like I remember him big
- 1:26born and then suddenly boom, he's like he's how humans grow. I mean,
- 1:34you got kids? Yeah? Kids? It does seem like that,
- 1:38doesn't Now are you just and you're dead? Seun, you're dead now?
- 1:42I mean I've been I've been a dad over many times over. Isn't it
- 1:47like just in a flash though, all of a sudden you like look at
- 1:49him and it's like whoa, where'd he come from? Yeah? I feel
- 1:52like it just blew by. It's like, oh my god, he's walking.
- 1:56You know. It's this people would tell me when when Eric was born.
- 1:59They tell me, you got it. You gotta understand that life flies
- 2:01by so fast. They grew up so quick, they grew up so quick,
- 2:05and at that moment, you know, you're holding just this tiny little
- 2:07bundle in your arms and you're like nah, And for a while it seems
- 2:13like no, they're not going to grow up that fast. And then all
- 2:15of a sudden you turn around and they turn back around and they are like
- 2:20Sean, they're walking, or they're talking, or they're they're going to school.
- 2:23I mean, my kid for the keys to the car. My kids
- 2:28in first grade this, yeah, ask him for the keys of the car.
- 2:30My kids going to the first grade already. I'm like, oh my
- 2:31gosh, you don't realize it. But at the time, when you if
- 2:35you're a new parent out there and you're listening to this show, it does
- 2:38happen. And it's so crazy. People tell you all the time it's gonna
- 2:42happen, and you're like, nah, no, it's not. It's like,
- 2:44really it does. Oh they couldn't hold their head up. Oh no,
- 2:47I was walking. I still have a problem holding my head up.
- 2:51Have you seen the size of this thing? Yeah, that's a whole nother
- 2:58topic right there. No. No, But we had a really good trip.
- 3:01It was just a you know all, that's all. It's what I
- 3:04wanted to do. I wanted to go camping. Yeah, so we just
- 3:07picked the new We picked the state park we haven't ment to yet, drove
- 3:08down there. We probably won't go back there. Again right, because it's
- 3:13it's a very boat centric or very water sport oriented state park. We tried
- 3:16it and something new, but you know, we still had a great time
- 3:21and met some great people and hooked out over the fire. And were you
- 3:25concerned about Max being close to the fire though, because that's one thing I
- 3:28even even with Eric being like six and a half years old, I'm still
- 3:31like concerned about him just being dumb and getting too close to the fire.
- 3:36And oh yeah, I mean I grew up around campfires. I've seen other
- 3:38small hills around campfire. You know. Of course I'm worried about it.
- 3:43Of course I'm worried that he's gonna I'm gonna turn around, he's gonna run
- 3:46full blitzed a little hot. Yeah. No. The Green Valley Fire Department,
- 3:50you know we're we're in Green Valley. They just posted a thing advisory
- 3:53about that about this is the time where you do the exactly what you did
- 3:57Sean. You go camping and you have a pit and the kids get around
- 4:00there, and they're saying, you know, keep your kid three feet away
- 4:03from that. And pets, because pets do the same thing. Yeah,
- 4:06they're I think most pets are kind of inhibited by fire. They don't like
- 4:11it, but they could get too close and embers and all that other stuff.
- 4:15I'm kind of wondering, like, what technology, Sean, did you
- 4:18take with you for any of our listeners that are going to be doing any
- 4:21camping or anything like that. What tech do you take with you when you
- 4:26go out there and you're in the middle of nowhere. For Max, we
- 4:29still took the hatch, the baby hatch which we have, which is like
- 4:32the noise machine with the light on it. And the benefit of that is
- 4:35it runs a five volt, right, So we have USB. So our
- 4:39camper is new, right, it's twenty twenty three. We just bought it
- 4:42brand new, and it's load It's loaded with USB ports everywhere, right,
- 4:46because that's what That's just the way it is for campers now right. Everybody
- 4:51runs. They want to charge their cell phones, they want to charge their
- 4:54iPads, they want to chart you know, all USB devices. So there's
- 4:58USB ports and it all runs off twelve vault and it's got an inverter in
- 5:01it. So we brought the hatch. I took my camera I take whenever
- 5:05we go camping. I take my whys outdoor Version two which I've run in
- 5:11the travel mode so I can just connect it to my phone and set it
- 5:16up to record motion overnight and then downloads it to my phone. I didn't
- 5:19catch anything this time, but you know, when we've gone camping up in
- 5:23Michigan, I've caught raccoons, I've caught possums and all that kind of stuff.
- 5:27So I set that up every time. I took my camera with me,
- 5:30but we didn't really find the time, you know, take any nighttime
- 5:33pictures or anything. But I didn't really take a whole lot of tech with
- 5:36me this time, right it was just a there's no cell service there,
- 5:41so it just was a disconnect from really awesome. That's the best time.
- 5:46That's the best type of camping right there. Sometimes disconnecting. You know,
- 5:48here we are a tech show and we're telling you to disconnect. But sometimes
- 5:51it's the best thing in the world. You know, you see it all
- 5:54the time. You see people going on these on planes or on train trips
- 5:57or but even bus trips, and what are they doing. The kids are
- 6:00on their phone. They should be looking out the window and seeing, oh,
- 6:02that's something new, And sometimes you know, maybe maybe this is a
- 6:05great way to show your son, show Max, like you don't always have
- 6:11to be online or on the devices. Well, you know, Max loves
- 6:15being outside, right, we go for a walk, I'd say six out
- 6:19of the day, six days out of the week. We go for a
- 6:21walk every night, and when we come back in, he just points the
- 6:26door and wants to go back outside. He loves being outside. He loves
- 6:29going camping, right, he loves going for walks, he loves being in
- 6:30the stroller, just taking it in. And you know, he slept for
- 6:33a handful of it this weekend because he just didn't take a nap and then
- 6:38we're pushing over the stroller and all of sudden he's asleep. We're just fine,
- 6:42But you know, it's just I that's my hope is that he wants
- 6:46to be an outdoor kid, because that's how it was for me when I
- 6:48was a kid. I did a lot of camping growing up, and you
- 6:53know, I just want him to be able to enjoy doing that kind of
- 6:56stuff. So, yeah, no, that's awesome, that's that's great.
- 6:58What is one of the things you were in I remember the most, justin
- 7:00about growing up? Uh, you know, as a kid, we know
- 7:05obviously I remember camping. I remember camping, but my parents got a little
- 7:11pop up camper. And you know, you guys are just sitting you right
- 7:14now talking about camping. I was kind of back in my mind and thinking
- 7:16about the pop up camper, and you know, honestly I hated that thing
- 7:19because I didn't I wanted. I wanted to be like the cool kids and
- 7:23have you know, a trailer or an RV, you know. So for
- 7:27me, well yeah, but like for me, like my parents, you
- 7:30know, with the pop up camper, I thought at the time, you
- 7:32know, I was like, oh, really, it's just that, But
- 7:35honestly, I loved it. Once you get out there, you know,
- 7:39it's not about what you have for the camper. It's where you're going camping
- 7:43and getting out to the wilderness and seeing the things and being able to go
- 7:47out and have a campfire and make s'mores and you know, just hang out.
- 7:51It's so much fun. That's that's so. That's yeah, that's one
- 7:55of the things I remember. Oh, it's crazy because like you know,
- 7:57we talked about we've talked about Cosabanita on the show, right. Well,
- 8:00my grandparents, my Grandma's used to have property in Buna, Visa, where.
- 8:03That's what it is, right, No, in Denver, Casbin is
- 8:07in Deavor, but is just Universta. They call it Buna here, I
- 8:13know, don't even get me started on that. It's Buna Vista. Yeah,
- 8:18it's down south. That's where the founders of South Park came from,
- 8:22all right, Matt, Matt, Yeah, I traveled to Colorado as a
- 8:26kid and camped out there, so it's like, yeah, it's kind of
- 8:28It's kind of fun that Colorado has a little bit of my heart because you
- 8:31know, my my parents spent a lot of time out there, was my
- 8:35mom anyways, and then I spent a lot of time out there as a
- 8:37kid. Pretty much every summer we were going to Colorado. That's awesome.
- 8:39I haven't even camped here in Colorado since i've been here. I've been here
- 8:43seven eight years, eight years now. Have you never didn't you guys borrow
- 8:46your neighbors camper somewhere? Yeah, I though, Yeah, not up in
- 8:50the mountains, not in the mountains. That was East County, that was
- 8:54out in the plains. Okay, yeah, No, we have never been
- 8:58up in the mountains to go camping. I Uh, it's funny because as
- 9:01a kid, I remember one of the things I would do because I lived
- 9:05in the suburbs and Honey and the beach, right, we would take baseball
- 9:07cards and a clothes pin and put it on our bike and make it sound
- 9:11like we were a motorcycle and oh, right around the neighborhood forever. You
- 9:16know. Now they have technology on these bikes that actually make that sound similar
- 9:22with the text with the sound of an engine. Yeah, now you can
- 9:28have a bike that actually gives that. It's like we technology is cool,
- 9:33but it does take away some of that that spirit of fun that we had
- 9:37as kids. Wait, can we can we do something where because what I
- 9:39remember doing as a kid is I would take my bike. I would tie
- 9:43a action figure on a string behind the bike, and I would like go
- 9:46wakeboarding. I would oh yeah, and I would like I would try to
- 9:50get the little action figure to like hit the curb or you know, see
- 9:54how scuffed up I could get it. Do they do that now with technology
- 9:58too? No? Okay, well on the video day. I saw an
- 10:03ad the other day, a cartoon. It was pretty funny. The mom
- 10:05tells the kid to go outside, you know, get off the computer,
- 10:09get outside and play. So what is he do. The mom comes out
- 10:13and looks later he's sitting in the front yard with a big twenty five inch
- 10:16screen play in his Xbox or PlayStation five to the front yard. She's like,
- 10:20what are you doing? You told me to come outside and play.
- 10:22Yeah, well play not wrong. Yeah. So I want to mention something
- 10:30that happened to me today speaking of the technology, you know, like we're
- 10:33addicted to technology, you know, we we have so much of the phones
- 10:37and everything. Right, So I was out golfing today with my company that
- 10:43I worked for, So they invited me to go to a play in a
- 10:46tournament. It was a sponsored tournament, so we had a foursome that was
- 10:50the director of the golf for Highland Hills, right, and then the general
- 10:54manager of golf. So these guys are like pros. And then it was
- 10:58also me and then my boss together in a cart. Right. So on
- 11:01the very first hole we tee off. We get that in the carts.
- 11:05I'm walking down to collect my ball because my very first t shot was horrible,
- 11:09but my boss was driving the cart. So we get back in the
- 11:11cart we go, and all of a sudden we get to the next phone.
- 11:13He goes, hey, where's my phone. I'm like, uh,
- 11:16I don't know it. It was just in the cart the cup holder.
- 11:20He's like, I yeah, I know, it was just here. I'm
- 11:22like, well, it can't be far because you just used it, so
- 11:26it's got to be somewhere back there. He went back, looked for it,
- 11:28couldn't find it, couldn't find it anywhere. He spent like twenty minutes
- 11:31searching for it. I'm like, oh my gosh, well, let's I
- 11:35got an idea. Because he has an Android. I'm like, let's use
- 11:37the Find my Phone on Android. Same same same concept as my iPhone.
- 11:41He didn't even know they had that. Oh yeah, they've had it for
- 11:45years. Oh cool, before before iPhone everyone had it as usual. Anyway,
- 11:50So we open up Find my Phone and he signs in as a guest,
- 11:56and he starts pinging his phone and can't find it. It's not responding
- 12:01like, wait, hold on, you just literally had your phone. What
- 12:05was going on here? Do you have location turned off or something? He's
- 12:07like, no, no, no, I keep it all on. So
- 12:09I try to call it it. Rings once goes to voicemail, call it
- 12:13back again. Rings twice goes to voicemail. I'm like, well, it's
- 12:18ringing, but it's weird. It goes to voicemail. Anyway, fast forward
- 12:22about thirty minutes. We're like, you know what, forget it, let's
- 12:24just play because we're already behind. We're gonna come back. We'll finish the
- 12:28round after eighteen holes, we'll finish it back on the hole we started,
- 12:31and we'll search again. So we play the whole round the whole time.
- 12:35The whole time, I feel naked without my phone. Yeah, I feel
- 12:39naked. I can't people, you have to. Can I text my wife
- 12:41with your phone to make sure she knows? Like, uh, yeah,
- 12:45sure, you can use my phone to text your wife whatever you know.
- 12:48But it was just like the whole time, Oh my gosh, I feel
- 12:50so naked about my phone. We're so addicted to technology. I need my
- 12:52phone. I need my phone. So we get back after the whole round,
- 12:56we get back, we circle back to where we're at, get there
- 13:01and I'm I'm looking around, I'm looking in the bushes, I'm looking in
- 13:03the weeds, can't find it. And then right there's like a little like
- 13:07a like a cold of sack. U turn for the carts. Right at
- 13:11the end of that cold de sack. You turn, there's like a mud
- 13:15puddle where just all this rain that Denver has been having is just there's a
- 13:20big mud puddle. But the way where it's situated is where the cart would
- 13:24turn to make a sharp turn to get around the corner. And I'm like,
- 13:28you know what, I wonder if it could be in here, but
- 13:31it was mud. I can't see anything. So I grabbed my seven iron
- 13:35and I just start digging in the mud and boom, boom, are hidden
- 13:39me. It was buried in the mud. The moment I picked it out
- 13:43of the mud, and this is a pixel six Android. It was me
- 13:46all right, I pick it out of the mud, it starts going bing,
- 13:50bring bing, bring brink because now I can get a signal. The
- 13:54signal was blocked because of all the mud. And it's still worked after being
- 13:58under water for three hours. The fact that it's still worked is pretty amazing.
- 14:03It's pretrazy. He literally he literally took it into back to the clubhouse,
- 14:07took it to the bathroom and rinsed his phone underwater to rinse off all
- 14:13the mud. And the phone still works. Just fun. Are the pixels
- 14:16that new IP sixty eight rating? Yes, they are and actually his pixel
- 14:20did send him a notification. I've never seen this before because I've never had
- 14:22to have it, but his pixel sent them a notifications saying USP port USB
- 14:26port disabled because it detected water. So as soon as it detects water,
- 14:33it disables the USB port so that way it doesn't fry the rest of the
- 14:35machine. And all he has to do is go and clean it out with
- 14:39a Q tip or a can of air, and bam, he's got his
- 14:41phone back. But the phone worked well, I mean, but no,
- 14:45the phone worked. I mean literally, the phone worked. I was he
- 14:48was able to get cal X and then I opened up to find my phone
- 14:52app again and I tried to ping it. Bam, it showed it right
- 14:54there where it was right next to me in his hand, and I was
- 14:58like, well, that was what it was. It fell well in the
- 15:00mud because he made a turn too hard and it fell out of the cart
- 15:03and he wasn't watching and it fell under the mud and the mud blocked the
- 15:07cell phone signal. Wow, I'm I'm just surprised. I'm pretty astonished that
- 15:11it still works after being in the mud and the water and everything else.
- 15:15It's pretty good stuff. Okay, So I did have a question, guys.
- 15:18I saw a thing this week that Microsoft is ending support for the Microsoft
- 15:24Series One, which is what I've got their Xbox. I'm wondering, if
- 15:28people don't game, should they even think about an Xbox? Does it have
- 15:33other reasons that somebody might think about maybe getting either of the two Xboxes that
- 15:37are going to be supported. I'm thinking now maybe it's time to get the
- 15:41Series X because I can't play DVDs on mine because you know the Xbox Series
- 15:46One it ended up going and to replace the DVD player in it you have
- 15:50to do wiring soldering, and I'm terrible with a solder gun. So I
- 15:52just thought, yeah, maybe the thing to do is is upgrade. I
- 15:56use it more though for almost like a like a Roku or a fire sticks,
- 16:03like a media center. I use it as a media center, but
- 16:06there might be a game I want to play. Are the games any good
- 16:07on the Xbox? Well, I mean with the game Pass you get access
- 16:11to tons of games, right, So that's what I have. I haven't
- 16:15bought a new Xbox an Xbox exclusive game in a long time because I just
- 16:18play on what's on game Pass, and I use it for YouTube TV,
- 16:22And I use it for Plex, I use it for Twitch, I use
- 16:25it for you know, So when I'm down in the basement on my computer,
- 16:27I've got my computer face to the wall and then I have my Xbox
- 16:30on the projector with the screen down and I can just toss on YouTube TV,
- 16:34I can toss on Plex, I can toss out whatever, and it's
- 16:37it works great. Is what is the big difference between the two, the
- 16:40Series S and the Series X. Series X is the top of the line.
- 16:44I mean, it's their flagship. It is. It's more powerful than
- 16:47the Series S. Series S is also smaller center, it's white versus the
- 16:52Series X being more of a rectangle, taller black. And I believe the
- 16:56Series X is the one that has the disc drive. It's the Series S
- 17:02that does not. And again, I mean, if you're a hardcore gamer,
- 17:04if you are like really looking for the best of the best quality in
- 17:08your games, you're gonna want to go with this Series X. If you
- 17:11just kind of like, hey, you know, media Center here, maybe
- 17:15a game or one or two here or there. And especially if you're just
- 17:18gonna be doing game pass where you know a lot of the games are gonna
- 17:21be games from the Xbox One era, you know, you probably could get
- 17:26away with an Xbox Series S without having to go shut out the extra What
- 17:30was it, one hundred and fifty? I think it is extra for the
- 17:33different x It's like a I think five hundred I want to almost say,
- 17:37like five hundred and forty nine bucks versus two hundred and ninety nine for the
- 17:41Series S. Yeah, so yeah, like one hundred and fifty extra.
- 17:45So I mean, yeah, if you're not gonna be a hardcore gamer looking
- 17:48for the best quality graphics, the best quality sound, I mean, the
- 17:51Series S is still a great uh step up from the Series One. Really,
- 17:56it's just not as powerful as the Series X. Right. Well,
- 18:00now, what kind of games are are available on game Pass? So I
- 18:03mean I might be able to try some of them out for those listeners that
- 18:06are thinking, maybe, you know, with this, maybe I'll go ahead
- 18:08and give it a try. Is there is there some that are recommended?
- 18:11Yeah, well you can go to Xbox dot com and check the gay Pass
- 18:14library to see what's available. But I mean it's always rotating, but there's
- 18:18so much good stuff. Any any I guarantee any gamer that's out there can
- 18:22find something to play on game Pass. That different. Absolutely, so I
- 18:26think it's totally worth I mean, it's totally worth it in my opinion.
- 18:30And I don't play that many games on my Xbox. But you know,
- 18:33I also have the PC game Pass, right, so I still it does
- 18:37I can do both gas and you have to pay for both though. No,
- 18:44if you get the Xbox game Pass, it comes with the PC game
- 18:47Pass. Oh cool, and then that game Oh that gives you the ability
- 18:51to play a flight simulator, right, because that's still up there, isn't
- 18:53it. I believe it is. Yes, yes, I finally make the
- 18:59move, and then I would find out that it's not up there anymore.
- 19:02Yep, you know, you're right. That's the problem with any type of
- 19:03subscription like this, right, there's no guarantee that the game you want is
- 19:07going to be available for an extended period of time. Right. I had
- 19:11Dirt Dirt Rally two point zero on PC game Pass and then it was just
- 19:17gone one day, oh, because they've removed it. Right, So there's
- 19:21no guarantee that your game is going to stay on game Pass. Well.
- 19:25But here's the thing, though, even if it doesn't stay on game Pass,
- 19:27they should then I've always gotten notifications saying, hey, check out these
- 19:32games before they're gone, especially if you add the game to your library or
- 19:36actually play the game and it goes away, it will tell you, hey,
- 19:40these games are about to leave. And what do you do then?
- 19:41Is by having the subscription of game Pass, you get to buy the game
- 19:45at a discount, so you don't have to spend full price. Ooh,
- 19:48I like that. Now, Sean, you're gonna be in the same boat
- 19:52as I am if I decide to go get the S or the Series X.
- 19:56I'm thinking of the X because at Target they also have for ninety nine
- 20:00the refrigerator that is shaped like an Xbox Series X. But I'm thinking,
- 20:07can you back up? Can you transfer the info from the Series one to
- 20:11the new Series s RX. That's a good question, don't I don't know.
- 20:17I don't know that. I don't know what the process is to transce
- 20:21Oh, your data, right, I don't know. Oh, are you
- 20:23talking about like save games and stuff? No, like your your your channels,
- 20:27like your plex your Yeah. Well so I don't know how it works,
- 20:33but I believe that if you would log in to your new Xbox,
- 20:37you should be able to have the option to add those channels, or it
- 20:40might already have them if you log it out of it, Well, you're
- 20:42gonna have to add your apps. You have to add the apps to it.
- 20:45Yeah, apps like your cloud saves and all that stuff should transfer just
- 20:48with you logging into the new machine. I'm gonna have to give it a
- 20:52try and I'll let you guys know next week. Now, with all of
- 20:56the tech that has been happening this week, one of the big stories along
- 20:59with that has been and many people don't understand the whole reddit thing. We've
- 21:03talked about this over the last couple of weeks, as we've seen this kind
- 21:07of every week there seems to be something different, and this week it's John
- 21:11Oliver. John Justin has lost though this one. I don't know what's going
- 21:17on with this one. So Reddit gave subreddit mod so moderators of subreddits.
- 21:22Right, So, if you like a subreddit, you can apply to be
- 21:26a moderator. Right. Basically that means you approve content, you ban users
- 21:30for inappropriate content. That YadA, yah yah. So a lot of subs
- 21:34went dark in response to the Reddit API deal the whole thing. Right.
- 21:38Reddit came out and said all right. Mods, If you're not going to
- 21:42come back online, we're going to kick y'all out and replace you, and
- 21:45we're going to find people that'll bring your subs back online. So what a
- 21:49lot of subredits did is they came back on, they marked themselves not safe
- 21:56for work, and all they're posting our pictures or videos of John Oliver.
- 22:00That's it. Why John Oliver? What did he do? Well? No
- 22:04idea. I've seen other subreddits come back online where they do malicious compliance,
- 22:11where if they're talking about the Rockies, like, for instance, the subreddit
- 22:15for the Colorado Rockies baseball team, instead of coming back online talking about the
- 22:19baseball team, they talk about literally the Rocky like the Rocky Mountains. That's
- 22:25all they talk about, like stuff like that. They're they're complying, but
- 22:27they're not staying true to the tone of their subreddits. So that's what we
- 22:33were talking about here. So the right. So some subrettes are coming back
- 22:37and doing that. Some have come back and are operating as normal, right,
- 22:41But most of them are trolling Reddit by doing these types of things.
- 22:45But what most of them are doing is marking themselves not safe for work.
- 22:49Not safe for work means obviously not safe for work, meaning it's adult content
- 22:53or other interporpritate contrenty, and some people may have that flag that they wouldn't
- 22:56be able to see it. But Reddit can't serve ad on not safe for
- 23:00work community, So most of these is not safe for work and they can't
- 23:11be they can't be served ads on those community. You can't be monetized.
- 23:14Oh my god, this makes so much sense because I people are complaining about
- 23:17all these ads on Reddit. I never see ads on readit because I'm always
- 23:21browsing not safe for work content just dead well no not like that I'm talking
- 23:26no, no, not like that of humor m Yeah, yeah, but
- 23:30I never saw red ads on Reddit. How how are they going to sit
- 23:33fright? Because the apile is going to be July first, right, I
- 23:37mean you've got so Reddit doubled down and basically still still was just bashing on
- 23:45the Apollo dev saying, you know, they have not apologized for saying that
- 23:49he tried to you know, blackmail, lamb and all this stuff and which
- 23:53is not true. Yeah, and you know they're saying that, yeah,
- 23:56we've tried to, We've tried to work with these develop helpers and trying to
- 24:00have it this developer, and there's other third party developers that are saying,
- 24:04like, here's all of my emails that went unanswered from you guys, So
- 24:10yeah, tell us, tell us you're working with us without telling us you're
- 24:12working with us, right, yeah. It's one of those scenarios where I
- 24:17don't know what. The timeline that Reddit did this in is so bizarre because
- 24:21it's like they announced this plan and said, all right, this was Jude
- 24:26first, right, it was at the beginning of the month, and said
- 24:27July one, this is this is effective right at the end of the month.
- 24:30One month. One month. That is impossible for any developer on any
- 24:34platform to beta test user tests. Polish and the developer for Apollo said,
- 24:41it's gonna take me longer than that to make sure that my people who have
- 24:44subscriptions for Apple get their money back. Oh yeah, yeah. I mean
- 24:48look, Reddit. Reddit has been going downhill for a long time. I
- 24:51mean years. It has been not it's not the same as it was back
- 24:56in you know what, early twenty ten, twenty eleven, twenty twelve.
- 25:00It has really not been the same. And this is kind of like the
- 25:03final nail in the coffin. I really think this is going to be the
- 25:06end of that, and and not not only just Reddit, but look at
- 25:08what Twitter's doing after Elon took over, and he's doing all these changes,
- 25:12I think, and I mentioned this about the fetiverse, all these new ones.
- 25:17Hang on to that Fox. We've got to take a break, but
- 25:19we come back. I want you to tell us about the feti verse and
- 25:22tell us about some of the options for those that say I don't want to
- 25:25play the Twitter game or I don't want to play, you know, the
- 25:27Reddit game. We'll do that when we come back. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 25:30I'm Sean de Weird, and I'm justin. Let me find us on the
- 25:33web at tech talk radio dot com. We'll be right back. And that
- 25:37fact to tech talk radio all right now. Before the break, I was
- 25:41talking about the Feediverse, the new well, I mean, it's more than
- 25:47just a social media but you know, we were talking about the big big,
- 25:49the big three. You know, you got Facebook, Meta, You've
- 25:52got Twitter, you got Reddit. Twitter's already going through some problems. Reddit
- 25:56now we talked about it's going through some problems or Facebook we heard this week
- 26:00also having some issues. Well, yeah, definitely Facebook's have some issues and
- 26:03Soo's Instagram. I mean that's part of Facebook meta, right, But people
- 26:07are starting to go, wait, hold on a second, I don't I
- 26:10don't want all of my data. I don't want all my data to go
- 26:12to like the big tech companies who are just going to sell my data,
- 26:15right, and that's what they do. I mean, you're not paying for
- 26:18Facebook, You're not paying for Twitter. I god, I hope you're not
- 26:22with the blue check mark thing. But even if you are doing that,
- 26:25you're still not paining. You're not paying for Reddit. If you're not paying
- 26:30for a service that you're getting, you are the product. Yeah, we've
- 26:33talked about that. Your your data, everything you do is getting scraped and
- 26:38it's getting archived and it's getting sold to advertisers. A good example of this
- 26:44is if you're listening and you've been online and maybe suddenly you thought, oh,
- 26:48I'm going to look at an ad. Here you saw an ad.
- 26:51It captured your attention and it was for a product, you know, widget,
- 26:55whatever, and you clicked on it and you looked at it and act
- 26:56me widget. Yeah. You will notice though, even if you're on Facebook
- 27:00when you do this or vice versa. On Instagram, you may notice you'll
- 27:04start seeing ads for the either that same product or a product that's very similar.
- 27:10And again that's telling you because they're seeing oh, they're looking at this
- 27:14or they're looking at that. Well, what we've even noticed with so we
- 27:18have metro net now with your internet service, our internet, we're now seeing
- 27:23that Carolin and I are getting similar ads on are both our devices because we're
- 27:26using metro net. So I believe metro net is selling our data. Oh
- 27:30yeah, absolutely. So it's interesting because like, but I'm getting ads that
- 27:34are similar for board games and stuff, and it's like, but here's the
- 27:37thing about ISPs. ISPs are not under the same regulations. They're under stricter
- 27:44regulations than than than then the companies like Facebook and and and Twitter. Okay,
- 27:48you you are paying your IP for a service, you can contact them
- 27:53and say do not sell my data. If you don't specifically call them and
- 28:00talk to them or whatever you have to do and tell them do not sell
- 28:04my data, they will buy default sell your data. And it's in the
- 28:08terms of service. If you read through the three hundred and fifty seven pages
- 28:14of whatever ISP contract you signed, it will say by default, you agree
- 28:18that we will sell your data unless otherwise specified by you, and don't forget.
- 28:23The same applies with that smart TV that you've bought. You may notice
- 28:27it, especially I know LG does this. Like if you get a smart
- 28:32TV and you may start it up and you may notice there is a disclaimer
- 28:36that they can take the information of the channels you watch, the content and
- 28:41how you're watching. When do you change the channel in the middle of an
- 28:44ad? What was in an ad for? Which ads do you watch?
- 28:47Which adds do you replay with your DVR if you have a DVR. All
- 28:51of that is data that's compiled, and of course they can make extra money
- 28:53on it. You know, you guys heard about that television that was going
- 28:56to be coming out and I wish I remember the name of the vendor,
- 29:00but they're gonna be a Roku. I think it was a Roku deal.
- 29:03They were going to be putting out a television that was basically was it going
- 29:07to be free or something like that? And then yeah, but it had
- 29:11a bar underneath it that would serve you, that would serve ads. Oh,
- 29:15it was like an LED screen or something. Yeah, and it would
- 29:18you know when you're you know, like if you're thinking like, wait,
- 29:22well what does that look like? What does that think you think of?
- 29:23When you're watching your favorite news station and you've got that lower third, that
- 29:27ticker that scrolls around the bottom right, that little ticker that gives you the
- 29:32news and the weather and the sports updates. That's kind of the idea behind
- 29:36this is that whenever your TV's on, it's just going to be scrolling ads
- 29:41across this screen. You know. I've heard something the other day too that
- 29:47you know, the Facebook is is, you know, trying to monetize itself
- 29:49a little better. But that's you know, in my experience, if you
- 29:53guys ever bought anything off a Facebook ad and not gotten well not gotten?
- 29:59No, well no I haven't. I have boughten things. I've seen ads
- 30:03on Well, I've seen ads on Facebook, and then I go and I
- 30:07look at it on Amazon, and it's like ten dollars cheaper because when they
- 30:11put the ad on Facebook, they bump up the price ten bucks to cover
- 30:15their cost of advertising. Yeah, so I just buy it off of Amazon.
- 30:18I'm like, oh, same thing, same deal, put ten bucks
- 30:21cheaper. I've done that, and yes, I did it as a test
- 30:25and I did not ever receive the product because it was such an amazing,
- 30:29crazy price. There was a company just recently. I saw the ad on
- 30:33Facebook and it was for a monitor that went on your laptop and you could
- 30:38pull it out and you had three screens. Then it stepped to the back
- 30:42of the laptop. The price thirty nine dollars. I thought, oh my
- 30:47god, three screens thirty nine dollars. You have your middle screen, which
- 30:51is your laptop, then you have these two screens on that. This is
- 30:52amazing. And I looked as soon as I saw that price, I said,
- 30:56Nah, this has got to be a scam. This is never going
- 30:59to be real. You're gonna have to buy the screen separately or whatnot.
- 31:03And I let it go. Well. On Instagram, I was fed the
- 31:07same type of ad, different company, and I clicked on that one and
- 31:11it was four hundred and forty nine dollars for this type of product. And
- 31:14that seems okay, that seems a little more legitimate. However, do you
- 31:18buy from there or do you go on like you said, justin Amazon or
- 31:22even a local vendor. Maybe you go to a big box store or even
- 31:26a mom and pop that might sell specialty products and buy it there. So
- 31:30you've got to be really, really careful when you're buying online. But they're
- 31:33asking people now, and this is crazy, They're asking them to contact the
- 31:37merchant when you get a product that's not delivered as promised or it's not the
- 31:41right product, instead of the merchant, because the merchant it's going to cost
- 31:45about three hundred and fifty dollars for a merchant to return that versus getting it
- 31:51directly from the actual vendor so or from the bank or the credit card.
- 31:57So you don't want to do it. They're saying, please start using the
- 32:00merchant. But sometimes these merchants never answer. I mean, you want to
- 32:05do this with that TV? You never got that television? Did you remember
- 32:08that TV that was a Kickstarter? Oh? Oh the monitor? Yeah no,
- 32:13it was the TV as a monitor. Yeah no, I did that.
- 32:15Yeah. But I mean, so when you're saying merchant, you're talking
- 32:19about the people that sell it and versus the people that are the buy the
- 32:22people that manufacturer. Oh oh yeah, yeah. Yeah no. Well see
- 32:25that's the thing I don't. I don't. I honestly, I don't have
- 32:29to worry about now. I'm not everybody obviously I don't have to worry about
- 32:31that. American Express. Yeah, I don't have that. Which card does
- 32:36that? I have the Platinum Platinum card. Yeah. So I just call
- 32:38American Express and they deal with it. I don't care. It doesn't matter
- 32:42what I make. I don't care what purchase it is. I call American
- 32:45Express and say I don't like this, I want my money back. They're
- 32:47like okay, and then they just they'll deal with it. Like I don't
- 32:51have to worry about that. But no, I get what you're saying.
- 32:52But yes, I did have to go to uh oh gosh, what was
- 32:58that? Eve? Eve was the company. Eve Spectrum was the monitor,
- 33:02and yeah, I paid I paid it for full. I paid it in
- 33:06full, and they said, oh, yeah, it's gonna be shipped,
- 33:07and then like three four weeks later, it still hadn't shipped. And I'm
- 33:09like, come on, guys, it's been over a year since you first
- 33:13announced this. I put my one hundred dollars down over a year ago.
- 33:16Or no, actually no, three years because it was before the pandemic.
- 33:21And yeah, and then finally in twenty twenty two it said hey, it's
- 33:23gonna ship, and then it never did. So yeah, yeahah. But
- 33:27then I ended up contacting the American Express and said, yeah, they they
- 33:30are not they're not being honest, and they're like, okay, no problem.
- 33:32I've always heard a good warning if you're gonna buy anything online, never
- 33:36buy with a debit card. Oh god, was by no? Never use
- 33:39a debit card period? No ever? Yeah, yeah, no, don't
- 33:44do it because as soon as somebody gets your you go to a gas station,
- 33:46you buy gas, right, yeah, you go, you put your
- 33:50card in there? What if what there's a skimmer a skimmer in there?
- 33:52Right? If you use a debit card, now they've got access to your
- 33:55bank account. They're gonna drain your bank account. What's gonna happen? Your
- 34:00bank's going to give your money back eventually? Also, what if you need
- 34:05to make bills or they put a hold sometimes when you buy gas, for
- 34:08example, so you might have a two hundred dollars or one hundred dollars hold
- 34:12on your card if you were getting ten dollars worth of gas, Z doesn't
- 34:15know when you're gonna stop. And if you don't have that, that could
- 34:19be a problem. So you gotta go don't ever, you yeah, don't
- 34:22ever use your debit card ever anywhere except for getting money out of the ATM.
- 34:25Okay, So back to the whole idea of this feediverse though, So
- 34:30yeah, we got yeah, what what are the alternatives for somebody if they
- 34:35they say, well, there's you know what, they say, maybe I
- 34:37don't want to do Twitter, And you know, Twitter is getting to the
- 34:39point now where it's becoming kind of it was it was almost like Facebook on
- 34:45Father's Day because everybody's posting photos of them with your dad, which was cool,
- 34:47but it was like yeah, okay, well okay, So there's a
- 34:52couple options if you want to be the Twitter, if you want to if
- 34:55you want to look at what was what what Twitter basically was back in two
- 35:00thousand and seven, eight nine, ten, you know whatever, Uh,
- 35:05you want to go to Mastodon Masthdon is it's called it's a mastadon dot social
- 35:12and that is the new Twitter. So it's again it's fetter. It's it's
- 35:15called the feediverse because it's decentralized. There's no one particular company, no one
- 35:22particular person who runs this platform, so you can't be censored. I mean,
- 35:29obviously if you're gonna say some really crazy things, you know, like
- 35:32sexist or racist or whatever. Yeah, okay, yeah, you're gonna get
- 35:37blocked. Okay, but if you would oh hey, I'm maga, right,
- 35:43Okay, you're not gonna get censored on. That's how I kind of
- 35:45associated with the Maston that it was more leaning to the right. But you're
- 35:51saying it's not. No, Actually I found the exact opposite. When I
- 35:54first got on on Masdon, it was very leftists. Was a lot of
- 36:00things talking about, you know, anti Trump or whatever, and I'm just
- 36:04so tired of talking about this already, but seriously, it was. It
- 36:07was more leftist to me. But here's the thing that was that was the
- 36:10default Masterdon. Once you get into Macedon, you sign up for an account,
- 36:15you start tagging hashtags that you like, hashtag golf, hashtag tech,
- 36:23talk radio, hashtag whatever, and you start following these particular topics and then
- 36:29it starts serving you content based on those topics that you like. So it's
- 36:34alchorarithm is gonna gonna work for you? Yes, And again it's it's federated,
- 36:38so it's not gonna be controlled by one particular person, one particular company.
- 36:43So if there's an instance of Masdon that you just you're like, oh
- 36:46wow, this is getting really toxic. You just leave the instance and go
- 36:51to a different one, right, and and and so it's it's you still
- 36:54get the same content, but you don't have to deal with all the other
- 36:58stuff that you don't want to see. So now let's move on to Reddit
- 37:00oka. Right, Reddit was the big one. Right, let me dot
- 37:05world. And it's funny I say this, lem me dot world. It's
- 37:07not spelled like my name. My name is spelled l E M M E.
- 37:10This is l E m m y dot world. Now there's there's a
- 37:16lem me dot world, a lem me dot one, There's a bha dot
- 37:21org. There's a few other ones. These are the new reddit okay,
- 37:27and my favorite is let me dot World, partly because I like the name.
- 37:31I'm a little biased. Now is this an open first sign ups or
- 37:35do you have to like get on a waiting list, because I'll be honest,
- 37:37Well, you have to get approved, you sign up, and you
- 37:39have to wait. I was waiting for Blue Sky, and Blue Sky just
- 37:43took forever. Finally I just said I'm done and I can't is not federated.
- 37:46Blue Sky is not a part of the federverse. Let me dot World.
- 37:51I signed up for let me dot one immediately got approved. Let Me
- 37:53dot World took me about five days to get approved. But they were also
- 37:58experiencing a man of influx of users after this whole Reddit fiasco. So they've
- 38:05kind of they've kind of beefed up their defenses, they've gotten their staff up
- 38:08to par, they're starting to approve things a little bit more. I absolutely
- 38:14love le me dot World. It is what Reddit used to be back in
- 38:19twenty ten, twenty eleven, twenty twelve, when content was made by humans
- 38:23and people actually would help each other out instead of just trying to troll each
- 38:28other or trying to make people mad by posting things that would make them mad
- 38:31or whatever. And I could say this in a multitude of ways, which
- 38:35I'm not, but it is what Reddit used to be and what Reddit should
- 38:40have been. Let me Yeah, they don't call them sublimes. Yeah,
- 38:45they call them communities instead of subreddits. They call them communities. So a
- 38:49couple of them that I'm particularly so. I'm subscribed to Denver Nuggets right oh,
- 38:53I'm wearing the shirt right now. I'm subscribed to that community. I'm
- 38:57subscribed to World News and Rawoyd, you should know, mildly infuriating, which
- 39:04people just post things that kind of make them a little bit mad. Let's
- 39:07see here what else I got. And you start your own your own Absolutely,
- 39:12you can start your own community, and you can start your own Lemmy
- 39:15instance. If you want to do a Lemmy instance that is just for you
- 39:20and your friends or you and your family, you can do that, and
- 39:23then you can actually federate it with the rest of the federation, so that
- 39:28with anybody that might Let's say, for inst for instance, let's say Sean
- 39:31wants to start up a Lemmy dot Sean or a Sean dot Lemmy or whatever
- 39:36it is, right, and for his family to talk about camping trips.
- 39:39Right, Let's say his family joins that Lemmy verse and starts, you know,
- 39:45interacting with the content. Then Sean goes and says, hey, you
- 39:50know what, I'm gonna go ahead and put this in the fetiverse. And
- 39:52now if I'm on let me dot world, I can see Sean's content on
- 39:57his private Lemmy instance. Oh, because he federated it, right, perfect
- 40:02the big Ones another quick break. But when we come back Rumble, you
- 40:07mentioned that I want to find out what that's all about right, oh yeah,
- 40:09rumbling kick you all right, we'll do that when we come back with
- 40:12more of tech talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean, and I'm
- 40:15Justin. Let me find us on well, you can buy us on Twitter
- 40:17at tech talk Radio. Now back to tech talk Radio. So we're talking
- 40:22about alternative social media's right. So you have Twitch, which is are the
- 40:28largest gaming video platform, streaming platform, live stream live stream platform, live
- 40:31streaming platform. We have a Twitch account. So imagine being one of the
- 40:35top streamers, racking in sixty seventy thousand views every time you stream. Wow,
- 40:40yep, leaving that platform, taking your content and going to a beta
- 40:45site called kick dot com. Okk dot com excuse that's his is his name
- 40:51on feeling name. He is now currently signed up a multimillion dollar deal to
- 40:57stream exclusively on Kick. Are people still watching people stream game? Doctor Disrespect
- 41:01and Wow? Oh yeah yeah? So right now, right out, literally
- 41:06as we're recording the show, x QC is streaming, He's got fifty five
- 41:10and sixty two people watching him streams. Oh my lord, the next guy
- 41:14playing three thirty one thousand to thirty one thousands. These are people who could
- 41:19be watching a movie on Amazon or Hulu or you know, a peak and
- 41:22they just decide to watch their favorite guy just play games. What mean the
- 41:25key to making that work? I mean we've had darkness for two nine,
- 41:30we've had Riya stream, who I just absolutely think is awesome. But what
- 41:34what is the key to making that work? If you're one, there's some
- 41:37luck involved, but you's got to be a good entertainer personality. Yeah,
- 41:40it's you're watching because you enjoy watching the person be at Goofball? Do you
- 41:45have to be a good gamer? No? Even Riya stream, he sucks
- 41:49at video games. I mean Rya. I love Rya stream. I love
- 41:52Ryan as a person. I love watching his streams. I watch him every
- 41:54day. He sucks so bad at driving, you know any game that he
- 42:00drives, but he makes fun of it and people love it, and he
- 42:02has entertainment. He's not afraid to laugh at himself, and he's entertaining because
- 42:07he's always interacting with his chat. So there's a key point you asked,
- 42:10what's the key point for people that are watching? They want to be recognized,
- 42:15for them to have their name called out on a stream, it's like
- 42:20being on TV, or it's like being interviewed on the radio. I've done
- 42:24morning radio for you know, thirty plus years, right, and I know
- 42:29when you make that connection, you know, I know we have listeners right
- 42:31now that I've been able to talk to on the phone. Those are the
- 42:35connections that they will hopefully keep coming back because yes, I do care about
- 42:40what their got, what's going on in their lives. So you make that
- 42:44connection with him. Let's face it, radio these days sometimes you don't get
- 42:46that from a DJ that's sitting in you know, Kansas or whatnot. You
- 42:51get that with your local radio station. So you get the same thing with
- 42:53these gamers. But they reach a much wider They do reach so much wider.
- 42:58It's a world wide it's a worldwide audience. But yeah, yes they
- 43:00do. And sometimes if you get through these really really really big guys like
- 43:05you know, xQc or doctor Disrespect or whatever, they can't see all the
- 43:08comments because they've got you know, like you said, fifty five thousand people
- 43:12that are watching, about forty thousand of them are commenting every second for the
- 43:17chance for you to have your comment looked at and read by the streamer as
- 43:23he's playing his game or he or she is very rare. But if you
- 43:28can get that, it's like hitting the lottery. Yeah, it's like,
- 43:31oh my god, they saw my comment. They read my comment. Oh
- 43:35my god, I saw Oh my god, I made it. Ok,
- 43:37you're over the top there, all right. I just looked up I did
- 43:43some research on the the xQc. How much money do you think he's getting
- 43:47for a two year deal? Fifty million I've said, thirty thousand, one
- 43:55hundred million dollars. Oh my god, two year contract to stream on kick
- 44:04Do they feed like ads during this? Oh god? Yeah? They all
- 44:07right, they get their money. But the reason he left, well,
- 44:14the reason he left Twitch is because Twitch has been chipping away at the profits
- 44:19of the content creators to give themselves more money. So Twitch Twitch streamers are
- 44:24at this point, We're like, hey, come on, guys, we're
- 44:28providing your If it wasn't for us, you would be nothing. And yet
- 44:32Twitch is like, yeah, we'll give you a couple bucks. Like,
- 44:36shut up, we'll give you a couple bucks. And now content creators are
- 44:38like no, Finally we're standing up. We're standing up for ourselves and saying
- 44:44no more. We want more money because we are bringing the content to you.
- 44:49You are not providing us anything but server space internet connection. Is YouTube
- 44:53also a viable platform for those streaming? I mean, I know you know
- 44:57it's owned by Google. Oh yeah, but the Doctor disrespect is on YouTube.
- 45:01Ria stream is on YouTube. Yeah, I saw that they've just changed.
- 45:06So in the past is how it was when we first started. When
- 45:10you know, we were there with YouTube, we could monetize some of the
- 45:15stuff that we were doing online and we got pretty good money from ads that
- 45:19were fed before and after and whatnot. And then as YouTube got bigger and
- 45:23became more popular, they changed a lot of those policies. And now it
- 45:27was you had to have one thousand subscribers, you had to post so much
- 45:31content every day and then every week, and it's been difficult for some.
- 45:36And now they've just lowered it. So now you have to have five hundred
- 45:38subscribers post ninety seconds of content or maybe. Yeah, I think it's so
- 45:45they brought it down so that people can make money. But that means you're
- 45:47going to start seeing more ads on YouTube content if you don't already, well,
- 45:52you always see ads on YouTube content and listen even now, now here's
- 45:54the thing I subscribe, Well, actually I don't subscribe. I get it
- 45:58through Google. Five, I get YouTube premium. Right. The selling point
- 46:01of YouTube premium. If you go and look up YouTube premium, what is
- 46:05their number one thing? No ads? Right, I have YouTube Premium and
- 46:10I'm still getting ads now, not the same way. If I click on
- 46:15a video, I see the video right away. Now, normally, if
- 46:16you don't have YouTube Premium, you click on a video, you have to
- 46:20weigh through two or three ads. What they're doing with YouTube premium is instead
- 46:24of showing you the content you want, they show you sponsored content in terms
- 46:30of like the first five videos are sponsored content. That is still ads in
- 46:36my book, And so people are just like, no, they're not They're
- 46:38not wanting to do this. And the same again, the same with Twitch.
- 46:43They're not making their money, they're not making their views. But here's
- 46:45the one downside of Kick. I want to mention this all right. Kick
- 46:50was founded on online gambling. Okay, Kick was this site for people to
- 46:54go to watch online gambling. If that's your fans, you want to watch
- 47:00other people gamble their money, you could go to kick dot com. All
- 47:04of a sudden, now it's other things. But the thing is is it
- 47:07was based and rooted in online gambling, and a lot of their ads are
- 47:13online gambling like FanDuel, stuff like that. No, like online casinos like
- 47:19slot machines and things. If you go to kick dot com, the number
- 47:23four top live categories is slots and casino and and and and another thing too
- 47:30with well actually number five and I was gonna bring this up to number five.
- 47:34Top category on kick is pools, hot tubs, and bikinis. Oh
- 47:37boy, this is the other problem with Twitch. Twitch has now become a
- 47:42site for smut. Like literally is a gamer on there that's wearing close to
- 47:46nothing, close to nothing, or or they're just not even gaming, they're
- 47:51just talking. They're just talking with their followers, but they're you know,
- 47:53usually called just chatting, and it's just it's literally pornoger and they have it
- 48:00on Twitch and Twitch does nothing about it because it brings in so much money.
- 48:06Right. But that's sad though, because then you get a whole generation
- 48:08that thinks this is normal. Yes, it's not, you know, not
- 48:13making a statement on how anybody wants to live. Everybody's got to make a
- 48:16living. But yet still, yeah, that's why would you why would you
- 48:21go get a nine to five job when you can make one hundred thousand dollars
- 48:22throw in your parts. Yeah, well it's a good point, all right.
- 48:28I have a question, Sean, you might be able to answer it.
- 48:30Your parents were getting starlink, and for those who don't know, starlink
- 48:36is now available in Tucson. At least, I think your parents were getting
- 48:39starlink. My parents talked about it, but they have not gotten it yet.
- 48:44Okay, so they just recently made it available in Tucson. I went
- 48:49and this was an ad from best Buy. So I went on to best
- 48:52buy dot com and I took a look and they had the equipment selling for
- 48:54just under three grand that you could get, and then they had a cheaper
- 49:00piece of equipment. But for me, I'm thinking, Okay, if you're
- 49:01gonna get starlink, you want to get the fastest, the most concise everything
- 49:06that's there. What is the what is the throughput that they say is going
- 49:10to be available for those that are getting starlink is have they promised any kind
- 49:15of upload download or I don't know, we don't I don't look, I
- 49:19don't know what they're promising. But yeah, because I thought your parents had
- 49:22gotten it, so That's why I wanted to ask you about it and see
- 49:25how they were feeling about it. They have not gotten it. They haven't
- 49:29they haven't talked about They've been relying on their five G hop spots and that's
- 49:31what they need. So yeah, Starlink has been expanding and now that that's
- 49:35the this is the company that is behind you know Tesla, right, I
- 49:38mean, this is company puts up the satellites and suddenly the equipments available in
- 49:45Tucson. It reached out to the director of marketing to see if I get
- 49:49answers to that. Nobody seems to know. And then the ad for the
- 49:52equipment doesn't really tell you what the kind of throughput you're going to get.
- 49:55I mean, what I want to spend all that money and get, you
- 49:58know, in days. That's a good and in the US, Starlink users
- 50:05can expect to get speeds around ninety ninety point five megabit really, and Canadian
- 50:10users especially could be about ninety seven ninety megabits down right, Yeah that's not
- 50:15good. That's okay? No, well no, you could still stream four
- 50:19K on ninety megabit. Yeah, but still, I mean I'm getting almost
- 50:22a gig you know, we'll pay for it. But you see, the
- 50:25costs per month, from what I understand, is going to be like a
- 50:29one hundred and ten dollars a month for the starlink. I'd rather pay the
- 50:32cable company, you know. Well yeah, but but here's the thing about
- 50:37cable or fiber or whoever you mean. You get outages, I mean all
- 50:39the time. So no starlink. Yeah, I guess you could have outage,
- 50:43but there's always a satellite above you. Yeah. We we saw one
- 50:46of the ROME units while we were camping, right, we were walking around,
- 50:51was like, oh, Starling, could what did you go do a
- 50:53speed test? Excuse me? Can I do a speed test on your Starling?
- 51:00So they're radio, don't mind me. So the ROME is one hundred
- 51:04and fifty bucks a month and a hardware costs of six hundred bucks. Okay,
- 51:07all right, if any of our listeners got it, I want to
- 51:09hear from you. I want to know what kind of speeds you're getting.
- 51:12If you want to get a test, you just go to speed test out
- 51:15in that and you should be able to hopefully check your speeds on that.
- 51:17We got to take another quick break, all right, we come back.
- 51:20We got more of tech Talk Radio for you. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm
- 51:23Sean de Weird, and I'm Justin. Let me find us on Facebook,
- 51:25Facebook, dot com, forward slash tech Talkers. We'll be right back and
- 51:30now fac to tech talk Radio. So this week I've been working on doing
- 51:36a data transfer from a Windows XP machine to a Windows eleven machine. And
- 51:43yeah, so they had program pe xp XP. It was a graphic shop.
- 51:49I sold them the computer thirteen years ago and they finally decided it's time
- 51:53to upgrade because they can't get online. They couldn't get online with it,
- 51:57they couldn't do it. So I finally said, look, here's what we
- 52:00could do. So we went like we did thirteen years ago. Top of
- 52:05the line, it's it's the I nine, even though they're not going to
- 52:08call it I nine anymore. It's the I nine thirteen nine. It's got
- 52:13you know, the thirty fifty in it, thirty two gigs of RAM,
- 52:16it's got you know, M two memory. And so what we've done is
- 52:22PC mover. And I've talked about them before from LapLink because the main concern
- 52:25is they have specialized programs that run their graphics design products and they needed to
- 52:32run this new computer, and so you know it has a hass key the
- 52:37whole bit. So we went with PC mover. My lord, it's been
- 52:43a week and a half to finally get it so I could install it on
- 52:47XP so that we can create the file to move and with this you're able
- 52:52to move the programs, the data and all of that so it will work
- 52:57under Windows eleven. And got that done. But in the meantime, and
- 53:01I thank them for taking a week and a half for but we finally got
- 53:05looks like we finally got it taken care of. I found a new program
- 53:08that makes it a little easier. You can do it with a dead machine,
- 53:12but the hard drives still active and it doesn't have to be in a
- 53:15system or on you can. It's called z install and z I n you
- 53:21know s stall and this program yeah, z install, but it lets you
- 53:27basically copy that data off that drive and it looks at it and sees,
- 53:30okay, that was a program. That was a program and you should be
- 53:32able to do it now. How we works with XP. I haven't had
- 53:36a chance to try it yet, but again, if you're having an issue
- 53:38with PC mover, contact their tech supporter. It might take a while,
- 53:42but they will help you out. But we're going to give ze install a
- 53:44try, and we'll probably have the representative on the show next week so we
- 53:46can talk a little bit about that. That's awesome, that'd be cool.
- 53:50You have a website of the week I do real quick. If you guys,
- 53:53have ever gone to a news site and you're just like, you know,
- 53:57you start reading this news article, juicy news bit, and it's like,
- 54:00hey, you gotta subscribe to this news Oh. I hate that.
- 54:04It happens all the time. Paywall they're called paywalls. You can't get and
- 54:07you can't access the content unless you have a paywall. Until now, ladies
- 54:12and gentlemen, I have a website for you. It is called archive dot
- 54:15i s oh. You basically go to archive dot i s you type in
- 54:22the exact r L or just copy it of the paywald article and it will
- 54:27take you to a quote unquote archived version of that article without the paywall.
- 54:31But do you have to wait for it to be published? How is it?
- 54:36At least it's if it's published on the Internet, it's archived. Archive
- 54:39takes within seconds. If you publish a website or an article on web.
- 54:44On the web, it gets archived a most immediately. Is it run by
- 54:46the same people would run archive dot org? You know, I actually I
- 54:51don't know. I don't I don't see anything about archive dot org on here.
- 54:54We'll have to look into that. But there is a yeah, I
- 54:58mean archive dot I s this is a great, great website to check out.
- 55:02So yeah, next time you're going to paywall, go check it out.
- 55:05Archive dot is paste that you are all in there and then see that
- 55:08content without the paywall. All right, good stuff for this week. We'll
- 55:12be back next week. If you have questions or comments, feel free to
- 55:14email us tech guys at tech talkRADIO dot com. Sean, I know it's
