- 0:28Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:33culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:36media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:39Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:42I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:45media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:49everyone. OK, this is our last week in
- 0:53this office, you guys. I'm so excited.
- 0:56I can't believe the time has come.
- 0:59We haven't been in this office for too long.
- 1:01It's been like 18 months and it's done as well.
- 1:04It served its purpose. But I am ready to move on to
- 1:08bigger and brighter things. Because if you guys have been
- 1:11listening, then you know that our new office has one ginormous
- 1:14big window across like an entire wall.
- 1:17I'm so ready. I am so ready for some natural
- 1:20light. So we technically can move in
- 1:23Thursday of this week. Annabelle and I are probably
- 1:25going to spend all of Thursday moving.
- 1:28I'm probably going to pre record Thursday's mini scroll on
- 1:31Wednesday so that we can spend Thursday moving and then
- 1:35Friday's mini scroll depending on how the move goes.
- 1:39Maybe in the new office, in the new studio, we're not totally
- 1:44sure. I am going to try and find some
- 1:46lighting that we can mount instead of having it like
- 1:49sitting on the floor and stuff. So there will be some changes
- 1:52and I'm sure that the set of what the podcast looks like for
- 1:55the next, you know, few weeks will kind of change as we figure
- 1:59it. But I'm so excited.
- 2:00I'm so ready for a fresh start. This office feels like honestly
- 2:05a Harry Potter closet. It feels like a dungeon.
- 2:07It has a lot of baggage attached to it, at least for me
- 2:10personally, like emotionally, mentally.
- 2:12So I'm just like so ready for a fresh start.
- 2:14I'm so excited. Okay, before I get into the
- 2:18stories for today, Please remember to rate, review and
- 2:20subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
- 2:22We're trying to get to 1000 Spotify star ratings by the end
- 2:24of the year. OK, the first story that I have
- 2:26for you guys is I want to talk about how Twitch streamer QT
- 2:30Cinderella has found herself in the middle of some controversy.
- 2:34So QT Cinderella was doing a stream with vanilla Mace and KDB
- 2:38where QT made a couple of comments that were not well
- 2:41received. We didn't see the stream in
- 2:43full, but there have been clips floating around on TikTok.
- 2:46And of course, according to comments and viewers of the
- 2:48stream, it seems like the three we're talking about what it's
- 2:51like for their chats to infantilize them.
- 2:53Before QT, Cinderella changed the subject to talk about the
- 2:56hate that she's been receiving lately.
- 2:58Now this turned into a bit more of a rant from her where she
- 3:02started talking about how viewers get frustrated with her
- 3:05for being associated with problematic influencers and
- 3:08streamers. She essentially questioned why
- 3:11she should be expected to cut these people off, and she was
- 3:14basically saying that love is more important than hate in
- 3:17these scenarios. The classic argument that if you
- 3:21just guide someone with love and acceptance that they will
- 3:25change. I'm not going to change though.
- 3:27I'm not going to. I will never believe that.
- 3:29If I'm kind to a hateful person, that means I agree with them.
- 3:33I will never believe in that. No matter what you guys say, I
- 3:36won't believe it because at the end of the day, if I'm around a
- 3:40racist person, I'm just not racist.
- 3:43I'm not me, I am not. They are, yes, but how am I
- 3:48supposed to help them ever? Am I cutting them off?
- 3:51No. I get it, you guys can think in
- 3:53black and white, but that's not how it works over here.
- 3:55OK, so Vanilla and Katie were mostly silent during this
- 3:58conversation, and both of them were visibly uncomfortable.
- 4:02After the conversation, QT Cinderella did make a comment
- 4:05about deleting the Vods in case her take was too controversial,
- 4:09maybe to protect herself or possibly to protect the others,
- 4:13but many feel obviously like she was trying to just delete the
- 4:16evidence. So people are really upset with
- 4:18QT Cinderella's comments. They're also frustrated by the
- 4:21fact that she chose to talk about it in this collaborative
- 4:24stream, which brought Katie and Vanilla into it when they
- 4:27wouldn't have otherwise been involved.
- 4:29One tick Tocker named Sarah had an interesting take on this,
- 4:32talking about how bigger streamers are almost always
- 4:34capitalizing off of smaller slash newer ones.
- 4:38I was one of the people that watched the stream last night
- 4:40and oh do I have something to say.
- 4:43I think it just really bugs me that there are a new wave of
- 4:46streamers that are becoming more popular that again taken
- 4:49advantage of from other big streamers by using their
- 4:52platform to speak their mind truly to get their point across
- 4:56to other people's platforms. What a friend to be by sharing
- 5:04your thoughts about something that is very hot to someone in a
- 5:11collaborated stream. That being said, most people did
- 5:14recognize how awkward this was for Katie and Vanilla, but they
- 5:17wish that they would have pushed back harder on the stream.
- 5:20Some people believe that Vanilla held the same beliefs as Cutie
- 5:23Cinderella based on her comments, while others claim
- 5:26that she was just trying to de escalate the situation.
- 5:28Since then, Katie has spoken out about the stream, saying that
- 5:32she never intended it to go the way that it did, and Vanilla did
- 5:35speak to her audience after the stream, where many viewers were
- 5:38saying that she cried about the situation.
- 5:40However, there aren't really any clips of this circulating
- 5:43online, and we weren't watching in real time, obviously, so I
- 5:46can't really confirm this. Yeah.
- 5:48So this take is super disappointing.
- 5:49I mean, if you are part of a marginalized or minority group
- 5:53that is facing discrimination, probably the last thing that you
- 5:58would want people who are supporting you to do is to treat
- 6:01others with like love and acceptance when those people who
- 6:04are being dehumanizing towards you are obviously not even
- 6:07looking at you in many cases as a human.
- 6:10And I do understand why viewers are upset that they didn't push
- 6:12back enough on her. All right, the next story that I
- 6:14have for you guys, it's been making the rounds that the rare
- 6:17beauty TikTok account seemingly commented on a post about Justin
- 6:22Bieber. I don't want to beat a dead
- 6:24horse. You're OK.
- 6:25Everyone is so tired of hearing about Justin Bieber and Selena
- 6:29Gomez and Hailey Bieber and all of this.
- 6:31But there is some interesting discourse that's emerged from
- 6:34this. Basically, a TikTok user named
- 6:36the Marina Marie posted a clip. The caption POV making Justin
- 6:40Bieber mad with my Rare Beauty gloss.
- 6:43In the video, the creator is applying the lip gloss and then
- 6:46seemingly pans to Justin Bieber in real life.
- 6:49The Rare Beauty account then commented on the TikTok with the
- 6:53hard eyes emoji. There has been a lot of
- 6:55conversation to emerge since users discovered the comment.
- 6:58These are some of the biggest running theories on why the Rare
- 7:02Beauty account would comment this First, many users argue
- 7:05that this is just another example of Selena Gomez feeding
- 7:08into the drama between her and Haley.
- 7:11I don't know. I'm not sure if that's entirely
- 7:13fair because this wasn't posted from her personal account.
- 7:16And I do have a hard time believing that Selena Gomez is
- 7:19like, in charge of the Rare Beauty social account.
- 7:21Do I think she has access to a? Probably, but do I think that
- 7:25she is the one that's like trolling the comments and
- 7:27replying to things like probably not.
- 7:29But that being said, this feeds into a conversation that we've
- 7:32had on this podcast for several years about brands getting
- 7:36involved in like Internet drama and how kind of icky and bizarre
- 7:39that is. In a similar vein, other TikTok
- 7:42users are convinced that this is manufactured drama for Selena,
- 7:46Justin and Haley to stay relevant along with their
- 7:48brands. As one user wrote on Reddit
- 7:51quote here we are talking about it.
- 7:52It gets the name out there. Super fans may want to further
- 7:55their parasocial relationship and purchase the brand because
- 7:58they're Team Selena. And then there's those that
- 8:00think it's weird but want to talk about it.
- 8:02So we do, and the brand's name gets out there further.
- 8:05I actually don't subscribe to this theory because both Rare
- 8:09and Road are very high quality brands, especially Rare.
- 8:12Rare's products can stand alone outside of Selena Gomez's name,
- 8:16and I think a lot of Roads products can as well.
- 8:19Both of these women do not need this manufactured drama to drum
- 8:23up sales and, you know, to get people to purchase.
- 8:26Their brands have proven time and time again that they are
- 8:30high quality and people want to purchase from them regardless of
- 8:34the drama involved. And lastly, the other theory is
- 8:36that this possibly proves that the Rare Beauty account has bots
- 8:41programs to comment on post that they're tagged in.
- 8:43This is the theory I subscribe to the most.
- 8:46I think it's possible that Rare Beauty has comment bots set up
- 8:50for videos that they're tagged in with certain keywords or
- 8:53whatever where they just comment like hard eyes and stuff because
- 8:55think about how much they are getting tagged on TikTok.
- 8:58And it's of course important for them to continually engage with
- 9:01their community. So I think this is the most
- 9:02likely one because also, like, if that's not the case and there
- 9:06was an actual human who is not Selena Gomez that commented this
- 9:09on that video, like they would have put their job at such risk.
- 9:13I just don't believe that somebody in the company would
- 9:15have done this. I don't know, maybe that's naive
- 9:17of me. OK, the next story that I have
- 9:19for you guys is that Camila Mendez and Rudy Mancuso are
- 9:22engaged. So these are not people that we
- 9:25frequently talk about here on Mini Scroll.
- 9:27But Rudy is an OG Viner turned musician and Camila is obviously
- 9:31an actress, having starred in some Gen.
- 9:33Z classics like Riverdale and Do Revenge.
- 9:36The pair announced their engagement on socials with a
- 9:38joint post and a caption that read Engaged to My Best Friend.
- 9:42The two have been romantically linked since 2022, but their
- 9:46relationship was confirmed the following year.
- 9:49They met while filming the ROM com Musica Musica.
- 9:52I'm sorry, I don't know how to say that.
- 9:54With the two reportedly having chemistry since Camilla's first
- 9:57on screen test. As for the engagement, Rudy
- 10:00proposed to Camilla in front of her friends and family and she
- 10:04thought she was going to a birthday party for a friend, but
- 10:06it was actually a surprise engagement as per people.
- 10:09I love when people get friends and family involved in their
- 10:12engagement. I think it's the most fun way to
- 10:14celebrate is to have that like big adrenaline rush, the big
- 10:17excitement of getting proposed to and then getting to celebrate
- 10:20with all your friends and family like immediately after.
- 10:23And you don't have to plan it the best.
- 10:25OK, so I have kind of like 2 final stories.
- 10:27It's basically just referencing 2 videos that are going viral
- 10:30right now. So the first is I wanted to talk
- 10:34about Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner and Northwest.
- 10:37Halloween costumes are so iconic.
- 10:40So the three of them revealed their costumes in a series of
- 10:42Tik Toks on Kim and N's joint account.
- 10:45They were dressed up as Jay Guapo, Pink Cardigan, and
- 10:48Chrissy G. So Jay is probably the most well
- 10:51known of the three. He's based in New York City and
- 10:53he makes comedy such as skits and prank style content.
- 10:57Some of his most popular content has been A Day in the Life of
- 11:00Jay Guapo and Pink Cardigan where Jay and his younger half
- 11:03brother have created these characters where they troll
- 11:06slash like prank people in the streets.
- 11:08His younger brother wears a pink cardigan and black leggings and
- 11:12obviously is nicknamed pink cardigan.
- 11:14And lastly, Chrissy G is another member of the group who is their
- 11:17mother. So in the TikTok that they
- 11:19posted, they recreated like Kim, North and Chris recreated one of
- 11:23the most iconic Tik Toks from on this trio where North is pink
- 11:26cardigan, Kim is Jay and Chris is Chrissy Jay.
- 11:29It's so deeply chronically online.
- 11:30Like obviously N said to Kim and Chris, like, we need to do this.
- 11:34Please do this with me. It has to be straight out of
- 11:37Northwest brain. Like I can't imagine anyone else
- 11:41in this group knew who these people were or cared enough to
- 11:45create this into a Halloween costume.
- 11:47But it's so much fun. I love seeing Kim and Chris lean
- 11:50into this for North. I mean, I assume it's for North.
- 11:52And yeah, it's just so silly. It's so fun.
- 11:54It's so chronically online, and it really just shows how
- 11:58Internet culture has merged with mainstream culture in such an
- 12:02intense way lately. OK, And the next clip that I
- 12:04wanted to mention, it's a video going viral of a woman
- 12:08journalist trying to basically do her job and all of these men
- 12:12are shouting at her in the background.
- 12:13So the video was posted by at lady under score app on TikTok,
- 12:16but it seemingly came from Kezi 9, which is ATV station in
- 12:20Oregon that's affiliated with ABC.
- 12:22The reporter's name is Olivia Cleary.
- 12:24So she was reporting from an American College football game,
- 12:27and a group of men started shouting behind her, some of
- 12:31them screaming 6-7, and at 1.1 of the boys peeked their heads
- 12:35into the frame in front of her. It's honestly really hard to
- 12:38watch. It's hard to explain, it's hard
- 12:39to articulate. But they're basically just like,
- 12:41surrounding her and hounding her and yelling and just, like,
- 12:45bothering her, harassing her while she's trying to do her job
- 12:48on air. I'm sure many women watching
- 12:50this are familiar with this being trolled by men who are,
- 12:54you know, basically just trying to make fun of you and take the
- 12:56attention away from you and make you mess up while you're trying
- 13:00to do your job. So that clip being reposted on
- 13:03TikTok. The caption said nothing sums up
- 13:05casual misogyny quite like this clip.
- 13:07And the response has obviously been favorable toward Olivia.
- 13:11There's so many comments condemning the men for their
- 13:13behavior, saying it should not be excused.
- 13:16And it's interesting that this clip has gone viral now because
- 13:19there seems to be more and more conversation on TikTok
- 13:21specifically about how young men are, like, yearning to be the
- 13:26main character. Caveat, as if they aren't
- 13:29already. OK.
- 13:30And we have seen this a lot when it comes to club culture.
- 13:33You know, there's clips all the time that women take at the club
- 13:37where it's a bunch of boys, like, standing on the platforms
- 13:41at clubs. And they're like, remember when
- 13:42we used to go out and it was like, women who were up there?
- 13:45And now all the guys are just taking over, dancing on tables,
- 13:48dancing on the platforms. And it's like, yeah, when I used
- 13:51to go to clubs in my early mid 20s, like, men were not allowed
- 13:54on those platforms. And there's also a lot of
- 13:56discussion about how millennial women were the last generation
- 13:59who could go out, like, without any money, which is honestly so
- 14:02true. And again, there are pros and
- 14:04cons to everything. OK, I'm not necessarily
- 14:06endorsing that. But it is interesting to note
- 14:09this generational shift among young men.
- 14:11And I imagine it goes hand in hand with the rise of
- 14:14conservativism. And just like everything going
- 14:16on in the world where men feel like they're having this
- 14:19loneliness epidemic, they feel like they're slighted.
- 14:21They feel like women just don't appreciate them, like whatever
- 14:25they're telling themselves amongst each other to make
- 14:28themselves feel better because they want to step up and be like
- 14:30nice normal guys. And so they have to make excuses
- 14:33for why women won't speak to them.
- 14:34They're pissed off and there's this general rise of disrespect
- 14:39from young men towards young women.
- 14:42And I think that is absolutely a generational thing right now at
- 14:46least. And I'm not saying that this
- 14:47kind of stuff, like what happened to this news anchor
- 14:49doesn't happen to men too. I'm sure it does.
- 14:52But it's just all of this combined, right?
- 14:55Like this happening in this current cultural climate amongst
- 14:59all of the discussions about how men feel left behind and the
- 15:02loneliness epidemic and all this shit, it's just like, well, why?
- 15:05Why do you think that's happening?
- 15:08Like this news anchor is trying to do her job and you're behind
- 15:11her, trolling her, preventing her, trying to embarrass her on
- 15:14air. It's so immature.
- 15:16And of course it's going to make us be like, why the fuck would
- 15:19we even bother? Like, get away from us.
- 15:21That's what it feels like. It's not funny.
- 15:23Nobody's laughing. Nobody thinks this is cute and
- 15:25funny and they're just doing it for other guys like they're
- 15:28doing it so that they can impress other men and that is
- 15:31the truth at the end of the day. All right, guys, that's it for
- 15:34mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 15:36I love you guys. Please remember to rate review
- 15:38and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US and
- 15:42I will talk to you tomorrow. Bye.
