- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome in to Jagxam.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I'm Pinani Steavens. The twenty twenty three NFL season officially over.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Now with the Super Bowl has taken place, jag Xam
- 0:24Speaker 2: is back once a week. We're gonna discuss the Super Bowl,
- 0:27Speaker 2: and now we're gonna talk about the Daguars off season
- 0:29Speaker 2: and what they need to get done. Brian and John
- 0:31Speaker 2: are with me here, and let's get to our big things.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Our first big thing today is gonna be an uphill
- 0:36Speaker 2: climb after watching the Super Bowl, seeing those two franchises
- 0:39Speaker 2: battle it out and what was a great game, but
- 0:41Speaker 2: also two franchises that have been there before and continue
- 0:44Speaker 2: to have success. Brian, when you watch that game, that
- 0:47Speaker 2: kind of felt like the gap was widening, Right, You're
- 0:49Speaker 2: seeing what's gonna take to get there, and that's a lot.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Well, the thing that stood out to me Kai was
- 0:54Speaker 3: the quarterback, right, I mean, that was a great quarterback
- 0:57Speaker 3: and a promising young quarterback in Rock Party.
- 0:59Speaker 4: It's really good this year.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Four thousand yards, thirty one touchdowns, his passer rating was
- 1:03Speaker 3: one hundred and thirteen. He was really good, and he
- 1:06Speaker 3: gave his team the lead in overtime in the Super Bowl.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Really impressed with Broughd Purty all season long. But didn't
- 1:13Speaker 3: you just know that if you put the ball back
- 1:15Speaker 3: in Pat Mahomes' hands, he was going to make the plays.
- 1:18Speaker 5: And he did.
- 1:19Speaker 3: And Juwan Taylor is his right tackle, right and Juwan
- 1:22Speaker 3: was one of the most penalized guys all season long.
- 1:24Speaker 4: It didn't matter.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Eight for eight on the final drive, and with the
- 1:28Speaker 3: time ticking down and the Super Bowl on the line,
- 1:31Speaker 3: he calmly just underhanded the pass out there to McCole
- 1:34Speaker 3: Hardeman and they won. This game is about the quarterback.
- 1:38Speaker 3: It's never been more apparent. And it sets up to me,
- 1:40Speaker 3: John that this team has to do whatever it takes
- 1:43Speaker 3: to build the wall to get the guy ready to go,
- 1:47Speaker 3: but to make sure that Trevor Lawrence has what it
- 1:50Speaker 3: takes to reach his potential.
- 1:52Speaker 6: Yeah, what we saw on Sunday was the two teams
- 1:55Speaker 6: that have dominated their conferences for the last five or
- 1:58Speaker 6: six years. Mary Niners are almost a dynasty in the NFC.
- 2:02Speaker 6: They haven't won the Super Bowl, so it sounds for
- 2:04Speaker 6: dates to say that the Chiefs. I guess they're a dynasty. Yes,
- 2:09Speaker 6: Patrick Mahomes is the best. It's hard to beat them,
- 2:12Speaker 6: but Let's not panic if you're the Jaguars and say
- 2:15Speaker 6: there's no way you can get there. They were close
- 2:18Speaker 6: a couple of years ago. You can get there, but
- 2:23Speaker 6: you must get things right around Trevor Lawrence and you
- 2:26Speaker 6: must get him closer to being gad that you trust
- 2:29Speaker 6: the way you get the way you trust Mahomes late,
- 2:32Speaker 6: can you ever get there?
- 2:34Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Mahomes is in all the timer certainly is Let's go
- 2:37Speaker 2: to our second big thing, which is gonna.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Be decisions decisions.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Now let's be off seas when Draguars have a lot
- 2:42Speaker 2: of decisions they need to make, specifically in free agency
- 2:45Speaker 2: as Josh Allen's gonna be up and of course Calvin Ridley.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And it feels like you should make those decisions pretty easily,
- 2:52Speaker 2: but getting things actually done will be interesting.
- 2:54Speaker 1: John, Can they bring both of them back?
- 2:56Speaker 2: Like Josh has to be top priority, but he hasn't
- 2:59Speaker 2: sign up contract.
- 3:00Speaker 6: Cat Well, you can bring both of them back. I
- 3:04Speaker 6: assume that they want to. I know they want Josh back.
- 3:08Speaker 6: I don't have as great a feel for Calvin. I
- 3:10Speaker 6: would want Calvin back because I wonder where you get
- 3:13Speaker 6: a thousand yards and eight touchdowns? I don't think you
- 3:17Speaker 6: cannot tag them both. I'd be surprised if they get
- 3:19Speaker 6: long term deals done with them both later. I don't
- 3:24Speaker 6: have a great vibe for this one. I think there's
- 3:27Speaker 6: a good chance they can get a deal with Josh
- 3:30Speaker 6: Dunn if they want to right before the deadline, and
- 3:32Speaker 6: then turn around and tag Calvin fast.
- 3:35Speaker 5: But times of the essence, they can get a deal done.
- 3:40Speaker 4: You know where they are with the cap right now.
- 3:42Speaker 3: They make a couple of easy decisions, right you know,
- 3:45Speaker 3: Brandon Sheriff moves on, Maybe a couple of hard decisions
- 3:48Speaker 3: to them. Maybe Cam Robinson doesn't come back, and that
- 3:51Speaker 3: puts money in your pocket. If they want, they can
- 3:53Speaker 3: get to a point where they're sixty sixty five million.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Dollars in cap room. And it's not all gonna be easy.
- 3:58Speaker 3: You know, you got to take a hard look at
- 4:00Speaker 3: Foyer Lucon and his contract which is almost twenty three
- 4:03Speaker 3: million dollars next year. But if they want to they can,
- 4:06Speaker 3: And look the way the salary cap is used by teams,
- 4:10Speaker 3: they will take a small cap figure in twenty twenty
- 4:13Speaker 3: four and push money into twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven,
- 4:17Speaker 3: when the salary cap is gonna take a major jump
- 4:19Speaker 3: forward and up with the infusion of the new television money.
- 4:23Speaker 3: The new television money from a few years ago. Kay
- 4:25Speaker 3: hasn't even hit the cap yet. It does next year,
- 4:27Speaker 3: so they can do it. But they're gonna have to
- 4:29Speaker 3: do something that this general manager has been loath to do.
- 4:32Speaker 3: They're gonna start pushing money out into the future. He
- 4:35Speaker 3: probably will stand in front of a room and tell
- 4:37Speaker 3: you how they're one of the few teams that has
- 4:39Speaker 3: money pushed down. But when you have a franchise quarterback
- 4:43Speaker 3: and they do, you're gonna have to play that game.
- 4:45Speaker 4: They can make these decisions and they can.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Get everything done, but they're gonna have to play the
- 4:49Speaker 3: game a little bit.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Differently than they have.
- 4:51Speaker 2: We'll see how that plays out, of course, and now
- 4:53Speaker 2: the draft is around the corner as well. Our final
- 4:55Speaker 2: big thing is the road to the draft, because now
- 4:57Speaker 2: the Super bowls behind us two weeks and will be
- 4:59Speaker 2: at the combine looking at potential draft picks for this team.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Of course, they're picking lower than they normally do last year.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I think they're gonna have less picks than last year,
- 5:07Speaker 2: that's for sure. But Brian, where's the focus.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Need to be for them offensive line.
- 5:11Speaker 3: You're gonna get tired of me saying this, but I
- 5:13Speaker 3: watched the NFC Championship game and watch the way that
- 5:16Speaker 3: Detroit's offensive line really controlled that San Francisco defensive front,
- 5:22Speaker 3: the one that gave all sorts of problems to Patrick
- 5:24Speaker 3: Mahomes on a Sunday during the Super Bowl. That's a
- 5:27Speaker 3: great offensive line and it helps a quarterback in Jared Goff,
- 5:30Speaker 3: who's a very good quarterback, but not in the elite
- 5:32Speaker 3: quarterback play at a much higher level. They were able
- 5:35Speaker 3: to run the ball, protect the quarterback. And we saw
- 5:38Speaker 3: the Lions all season long. They were an explosive offense.
- 5:41Speaker 3: This team must build an offensive line in front of
- 5:43Speaker 3: their quarterback like that. And this is a great draft, John.
- 5:47Speaker 3: There are probably nine offensive tackles who will have top
- 5:50Speaker 3: forty grades, and there are a couple of other positions
- 5:53Speaker 3: on the offensive line that will be available. This is
- 5:56Speaker 3: a perfect year for them to go all in on
- 5:58Speaker 3: building the offensive line to help Trevor get where he
- 6:01Speaker 3: needs to be.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Yet, I wouldn't mind that a bit.
- 6:06Speaker 6: First round and second round in the offensive line, even
- 6:10Speaker 6: on the interior, makes sense to me. It'll be obviously
- 6:14Speaker 6: you need to know what they're going to do in
- 6:15Speaker 6: free agency before you know they're going to do that.
- 6:17Speaker 6: I don't know that they'll actually go that hard toward
- 6:19Speaker 6: the offensive line, because you can talk about it for
- 6:22Speaker 6: the draft and you sometimes don't. I think they could
- 6:24Speaker 6: go corner as well on the offense in the first round,
- 6:28Speaker 6: and I still wonder if at some point they don't
- 6:31Speaker 6: address trying to get stouter and more disruptive on the
- 6:34Speaker 6: defensive interior.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Okay, and I could see that, But here's the deal.
- 6:37Speaker 3: If you keep Calvin Ridley, you don't have a second
- 6:39Speaker 3: round pick, and can you get to the third round
- 6:41Speaker 3: before you find an offensive lineman in a draft where
- 6:44Speaker 3: you need a tackle? I say you need a tackle
- 6:46Speaker 3: because I don't think Cam Robinson's a guy that's coming back,
- 6:48Speaker 3: and I don't me I didn't see Walker Little as
- 6:52Speaker 3: that long term solution, at least not the way that
- 6:54Speaker 3: he played this season. So I don't know if you
- 6:56Speaker 3: can get to the third round if you keep Calvin
- 6:59Speaker 3: and not have addressed the offensive line.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:03Speaker 6: I don't know if you can either. But I know
- 7:06Speaker 6: from experience that you talk, talk, talk before the draft,
- 7:09Speaker 6: and then sometimes guys come up that gets you off
- 7:12Speaker 6: your plan, and you know, you just never know.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Gotta play to the board, as they always say, Stay
- 7:18Speaker 2: with us here, we're gonna hear from Trent Balky what
- 7:20Speaker 2: he had to say after the season. Coming up right
- 7:22Speaker 2: after the break here on jags Am, Move.
- 7:31Speaker 1: The Freight, Move the Freight.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Magellan Transport voted the coolest office space in Jacksonville. You
- 7:35Speaker 2: can apply on line at www dot Magellan Logistics dot com.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Welcome back to jags Am.
- 7:41Speaker 2: We were on a little bit of a break there,
- 7:43Speaker 2: but now that the Super Bowl is behind us, we're
- 7:45Speaker 2: in the off season mode. So we're back and we're
- 7:47Speaker 2: gonna talk a little bit about that off season. We
- 7:49Speaker 2: did hear from GM Trent Balky. It took a couple
- 7:51Speaker 2: of weeks. We didn't hear from him right after the
- 7:53Speaker 2: end of the season. I think they waited until they
- 7:56Speaker 2: had made a decision about their defensive coordinator. But we
- 7:58Speaker 2: did hear from Trent Balk and we talked a little
- 8:00Speaker 2: bit about making that decision about who they were going
- 8:02Speaker 2: to bring in at DC after they decided to make
- 8:05Speaker 2: some of those coaching changes, and he did say that
- 8:07Speaker 2: when it comes down to it, they discuss that, but
- 8:09Speaker 2: the decision comes down to Doug.
- 8:12Speaker 7: Coach owns the staff just like they do in most
- 8:15Speaker 7: places and no different here, and I respect the decisions
- 8:19Speaker 7: that he makes. I mean, we collaborate, we work together,
- 8:22Speaker 7: I said in on all the interviews, we shared our thoughts,
- 8:25Speaker 7: but at the end of the day, coach owns it
- 8:28Speaker 7: and I respect those decisions.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Brian, there are some reports that you know this pick
- 8:33Speaker 2: at DC Ryan Nielsen was Trent Balky's decision and not Doug's.
- 8:37Speaker 2: But they're saying it can't be that because Doug's picking
- 8:41Speaker 2: on his staff is according to Trent, it can't be.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I mean, look, general managers often have a strong indication
- 8:48Speaker 3: of who would fit and guys they know around the league.
- 8:51Speaker 3: But in the end, the general manager's not sitting in
- 8:53Speaker 3: their game planning meetings and the general managers not on
- 8:55Speaker 3: the sideline interacting with the coaching staff on so it
- 9:01Speaker 3: has to be the coach. You can't have a dysfunctional
- 9:06Speaker 3: coaching staff because the general manager got his guy and
- 9:09Speaker 3: the head coach didn't get his guy. You just can't
- 9:11Speaker 3: convince me that Doug didn't sign off on this one
- 9:13Speaker 3: from top to bottom.
- 9:14Speaker 6: So yeah, my understanding was it was Doug's call.
- 9:18Speaker 5: As Brian said, it has to be Doug's call.
- 9:22Speaker 6: If it's not, I can't imagine it not blowing up
- 9:26Speaker 6: within a year. So Doug's call, and it's Ryan Nielsen.
- 9:31Speaker 6: And everything you hear about him is that he's a
- 9:33Speaker 6: very good coach, high energy, aggressive. I guess I'm still
- 9:37Speaker 6: waiting for the first defensive coordinator. He's not aggressive.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Right, and it doesn't bring it on every play. I've
- 9:46Speaker 3: only heard good things about him as well.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Good.
- 9:49Speaker 2: We also heard from Trent obviously a lot of questions
- 9:51Speaker 2: about how things ended last season with that slide and
- 9:54Speaker 2: missing the playoffs from the team, and Trent Balgy really
- 9:57Speaker 2: said they need to focus in on being tougher, and
- 9:59Speaker 2: that starts in the trenches when you can't.
- 10:02Speaker 7: Run the football, and later in the year you can't
- 10:05Speaker 7: stop the run. That's a problem International Football League. We've
- 10:11Speaker 7: always prided ourselves on being able to do that. Run
- 10:14Speaker 7: the football, stop the run, and for whatever reason, we
- 10:18Speaker 7: weren't able to do that. I think there's a little
- 10:20Speaker 7: there's a lot of moving parts to that. I don't
- 10:22Speaker 7: think it's just player related. I don't think it's just
- 10:25Speaker 7: scheme related. We've got to get bigger. We've got to
- 10:30Speaker 7: get stronger, We've got to get more physical in the trenches,
- 10:34Speaker 7: and if you want to compete for championships, you have
- 10:37Speaker 7: to do that. So I think we've got some good
- 10:40Speaker 7: pieces in there. We've got some good young players in there,
- 10:43Speaker 7: but we got to get better.
- 10:45Speaker 2: John, no breaking news there. You gotta be physical if
- 10:47Speaker 2: you want to win football games. How does this team
- 10:49Speaker 2: go about doing that?
- 10:50Speaker 1: Though?
- 10:50Speaker 5: Well?
- 10:51Speaker 6: To me, this was the key takeaway of his press conference,
- 10:54Speaker 6: and I thought it absolutely hit the nail on the head.
- 10:58Speaker 6: At the end of last season, or really all of
- 11:00Speaker 6: last season, they couldn't run when they needed to run,
- 11:04Speaker 6: and at the end, at the end of the season, strangely,
- 11:07Speaker 6: all of a sudden, they couldn't stop the run. It
- 11:09Speaker 6: may be a passing league, but if you can't do
- 11:12Speaker 6: those things, you can't pass effectively. When it's time, how
- 11:18Speaker 6: do you do it?
- 11:19Speaker 5: Well?
- 11:20Speaker 6: I think they'll be better against the run because I've
- 11:22Speaker 6: got to think Devon Hamilton's better next year, and night
- 11:26Speaker 6: is fault the back issue, et cetera. They've got a
- 11:29Speaker 6: piece there. I would still like to see a mad
- 11:32Speaker 6: another piece in the medal. I don't know if they will.
- 11:35Speaker 5: You draft and you get more brawler on the interior.
- 11:39Speaker 6: Remember when Doug won the Super Bowl in Philadelphia, they
- 11:42Speaker 6: were because of the offensive scheme, they're always going to
- 11:45Speaker 6: be passed first.
- 11:46Speaker 5: That team could maul too.
- 11:48Speaker 6: You've got to be able to get a yard when
- 11:52Speaker 6: you need a yard, and this team couldn't do.
- 11:54Speaker 4: It last year.
- 11:55Speaker 3: It's just, you know, just throwing fuel on my fire
- 11:57Speaker 3: about the offensive line. I mean, the offensive center on
- 11:59Speaker 3: the most important play of the entire season was on
- 12:02Speaker 3: his back at the feet of the quarterback and prevented
- 12:05Speaker 3: the quarterback from reaching the ball into the end zone.
- 12:08Speaker 4: You got to get stronger there. I mean, look, if.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Ezra Cleveland is a guy that you believe is going
- 12:13Speaker 3: to be your left guard, and that's the word, right,
- 12:15Speaker 3: and Cooper Hodges is the guy they have a lot
- 12:18Speaker 3: of belief in.
- 12:20Speaker 4: They got to see it because he didn't play well.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Then what's the spot. It's the center.
- 12:24Speaker 3: And when you look at Creed Humphrey in the way
- 12:26Speaker 3: that Kansas City can control the center of the line.
- 12:29Speaker 3: And I don't know that Aaron Banks is a star center,
- 12:32Speaker 3: but he was a really good center on one of
- 12:34Speaker 3: the best rushing teams in the last couple of years.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You've got to be better at center. I almost stood
- 12:39Speaker 3: up and cheered when he said we got to be tougher. Yes,
- 12:42Speaker 3: that was what was missing last year. And the tempo
- 12:44Speaker 3: comes from the offensive line. You look at at Jason
- 12:47Speaker 3: Kelcey right, Look at the way he took his shirt
- 12:49Speaker 3: off at the game in Buffalo and was drinking beer.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Hey, he's a madman.
- 12:53Speaker 3: I want a mad man in the middle of my
- 12:54Speaker 3: offensive line, somebody who sets the tempo for it all
- 12:57Speaker 3: because if this team could convert on third down in short,
- 13:01Speaker 3: Trevor would be able to pull off play action, you'd
- 13:04Speaker 3: be able to take the downfield shots. It's all there
- 13:07Speaker 3: in the middle of the offensive line, and that has
- 13:10Speaker 3: to be fixed.
- 13:10Speaker 5: It's so much an eye test thing. I know. There
- 13:13Speaker 5: was a time late.
- 13:14Speaker 6: In the season we setting each other next to each
- 13:16Speaker 6: other in the press box. I think you said to
- 13:18Speaker 6: me or I said to you. On a third and one, boy,
- 13:22Speaker 6: it seems like a long yard I mean that seems
- 13:24Speaker 6: like a long yardage to wait, long yardage played for
- 13:27Speaker 6: this team last year. That's just how it felt. It
- 13:31Speaker 6: can't feel that way moving forward.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Definitely something that needs to change. Another thing We've talked
- 13:35Speaker 2: a lot about this free agency. Josh Allen had a
- 13:38Speaker 2: career year last year. He's gonna want big money this year. Now,
- 13:41Speaker 2: this is from try a couple of weeks ago, so
- 13:43Speaker 2: some time has passed since then, but at this point
- 13:45Speaker 2: he hadn't talked to Josh Allen about the contract extension
- 13:49Speaker 2: this year.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Is what he had to say.
- 13:51Speaker 7: I know Josh wants to be here. I know we
- 13:53Speaker 7: want him here, you know, can we come to a
- 13:56Speaker 7: number that works for everybody? That's the key and I
- 13:59Speaker 7: respect that. It's like I said last year with Evans situation,
- 14:04Speaker 7: you got to respect these guys that put themselves in
- 14:06Speaker 7: this position. They work hard, they deserve to make good money.
- 14:11Speaker 7: What that good means to them is could be different
- 14:13Speaker 7: than what it means to us. So we just got
- 14:16Speaker 7: to come together, sit down at the table and work
- 14:20Speaker 7: things out.
- 14:22Speaker 1: John.
- 14:23Speaker 2: I'm sure the team wants Josh here. Josh wants to
- 14:25Speaker 2: be here, but as we know these when you talk money,
- 14:28Speaker 2: things can always get sticky. Is it worse if this
- 14:31Speaker 2: goes on longer? Well, we hope to see something soon.
- 14:34Speaker 6: Book Trent got a lot of flak publicly, Oh why
- 14:37Speaker 6: isn't you talk to him. I'm assuming by now the
- 14:41Speaker 6: sides have talked. The reality with deals like this, everything
- 14:45Speaker 6: happens at the deadline anyway, So just because they hadn't
- 14:49Speaker 6: talked at the time doesn't mean that they won't talk
- 14:53Speaker 6: in those last two days. I can't tell you the
- 14:55Speaker 6: number of contract situations like that I've covered around his newspaper.
- 14:59Speaker 5: Guy that I followed.
- 15:00Speaker 6: I was here where you think nothing's happened, nothing's happening,
- 15:02Speaker 6: and then all of a sudden, in the last day
- 15:04Speaker 6: and a half, there's faxes back and forth. Remember facts
- 15:07Speaker 6: is but that, and all of a sudden, the deal
- 15:11Speaker 6: gets done. He'll be here in some capacity, whether it's
- 15:15Speaker 6: on the tag or long term.
- 15:18Speaker 5: I would like to see it long term. I don't
- 15:20Speaker 5: know how.
- 15:22Speaker 6: I don't know how the sides feel about getting that
- 15:25Speaker 6: number done to make that happen, because I'm not involved
- 15:27Speaker 6: in conversations. But I think Josh is a low risk
- 15:31Speaker 6: long term signing because I think his floor is very
- 15:34Speaker 6: high and he doesn't get sacks. He's a very good player.
- 15:37Speaker 6: You're always gonna get production and value. I'd like to
- 15:39Speaker 6: see it, but I don't know what's gonna happen.
- 15:40Speaker 3: You know, if I was Trend's publicists, before he would
- 15:42Speaker 3: have gone out there, I would have said, look, there's
- 15:45Speaker 3: only one answer to this. We want him here, we're
- 15:48Speaker 3: working on a plan, and we will get it done.
- 15:51Speaker 4: That's it. Because when he left.
- 15:53Speaker 3: It open like we haven't talked yet, there's too much
- 15:56Speaker 3: information and everyone wants a piece of trip right now,
- 15:58Speaker 3: right And so he didn't do himself favors by giving
- 16:01Speaker 3: that honest answer. He probably just should have said, we
- 16:05Speaker 3: want him here, we're working on our plan.
- 16:07Speaker 4: We got to get it done.
- 16:08Speaker 3: And the truth is, John, and you know this is
- 16:10Speaker 3: that there are a couple of complicating factors.
- 16:12Speaker 4: One is the quarterback. Two is the wide receiver.
- 16:15Speaker 3: You have to figure out a way to work all
- 16:18Speaker 3: of these contracts together.
- 16:19Speaker 4: It's not just oh yeah, we're gonna pay them.
- 16:21Speaker 3: They're gonna pay them, but they have to set up
- 16:23Speaker 3: a contract that is something that they can manage with
- 16:26Speaker 3: all these other players that they've got to get signed
- 16:28Speaker 3: and guys that they might want to bring in in
- 16:30Speaker 3: free agency. It's a complex time of year to fit
- 16:33Speaker 3: all of those pieces together.
- 16:35Speaker 4: And they have twenty seven days. What's the rush.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Twenty seven days is when the new league year opens
- 16:40Speaker 3: on March eleventh. There's no reason to rush it. Get
- 16:43Speaker 3: the right deal done. You guys have negotiated houses and
- 16:46Speaker 3: cars and all.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Of those things.
- 16:48Speaker 3: It comes at the moment that you have to sign
- 16:51Speaker 3: the contract. They'll get something done.
- 16:53Speaker 5: We are faxes, faxes back and forth.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I'm going to say, carry your pigeon.
- 16:57Speaker 3: I remember the fashion machine with a little tube and
- 16:59Speaker 3: you put it in. That's spun it before it came
- 17:01Speaker 3: back that the eighties.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Yeah year old. My dad used to sell them, so
- 17:06Speaker 4: I'd sell them.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Oh gosh, all right, coming up, we've talked a lot
- 17:09Speaker 2: about our free agents. We're going to talk about some
- 17:11Speaker 2: other free agents that might be available.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Some names.
- 17:13Speaker 2: We're looking at someone we'd like to see come to Jacksonville.
- 17:16Speaker 2: So stay with us here we'll go over those names.
- 17:17Speaker 1: After the Brank.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Joined the Jaguars five K Stadium Challenge presented by Novo
- 17:27Speaker 2: Nordisk on Saturday, February twenty fourth, right here at EverBank Stadium.
- 17:31Speaker 2: You can register at Jaguars dot com slash five k.
- 17:35Speaker 1: John, you give me run the five k.
- 17:37Speaker 5: Uh Probably not.
- 17:39Speaker 1: I could a slow walk a slaunter, I.
- 17:43Speaker 5: Could jog it, but me jogging it is a little
- 17:45Speaker 5: bit like a.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Walking okay, just a fast walk, maybe power walk.
- 17:49Speaker 5: It's right, okays, right.
- 17:50Speaker 1: We've been talking about the free agents.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Obviously, Calvin Ridley, Josh Allen, big free agent names that
- 17:54Speaker 2: they need to deal with in house. But there's gonna
- 17:56Speaker 2: be other players that are available as well, and each
- 17:59Speaker 2: of us have picked a person that we're hoping at least,
- 18:01Speaker 2: you know, maybe they can.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Get in the building.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Talk to who's someone you would like to see added
- 18:04Speaker 2: to this team? Brian, where are you looking? I know
- 18:06Speaker 2: you are always about the offenation.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Well yeah, well no, I'm all about the offensive line
- 18:10Speaker 3: this year. We shouldn't put the stars here, right, I
- 18:12Speaker 3: mean yeah, absolutely. The money is no object, and I'm
- 18:15Speaker 3: going to spend shod CON's money here. I want Robert Hunt,
- 18:17Speaker 3: the big offensive guard for the Miami Dolphins. Really a
- 18:21Speaker 3: broad shouldered guy, long arms, big hands, and is a
- 18:25Speaker 3: guy that can settle in in pass protection, but he's
- 18:29Speaker 3: a mauler in the run game. And I would love
- 18:31Speaker 3: to see a big guy like that come in and
- 18:34Speaker 3: compete on either side, right with Cooper Hodges, with Ezra Cleveland,
- 18:39Speaker 3: to be able to give them the attitude they need
- 18:41Speaker 3: in the offensive line right. If you are going to
- 18:44Speaker 3: fix this, it has to be you're not going to
- 18:47Speaker 3: keep us from getting three yards when we need to.
- 18:49Speaker 6: And it was a surprise when he didn't get They
- 18:53Speaker 6: signed long term another offensive line and didn't resign him,
- 18:57Speaker 6: which is sort of surprising. So I liked this idea too.
- 19:01Speaker 6: You'd already picked him, so I didn't go that way.
- 19:05Speaker 5: My choice was actually t.
- 19:07Speaker 6: Higgins, but I don't think he's gonna be available, so
- 19:10Speaker 6: I think that precluded a lot of us picking certain
- 19:14Speaker 6: guys because I think Higgins can get a franchised he
- 19:17Speaker 6: would be the ideal to me had played with Trevor.
- 19:20Speaker 6: If he's out there, he might be a break the
- 19:22Speaker 6: bank guy. Instead, I went with Justin Mattobique.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Let's do it.
- 19:27Speaker 6: I get that defensive tackle for the Ravens. He's probably
- 19:29Speaker 6: pie in the sky too, to be honest with you,
- 19:31Speaker 6: but he's you know, he's a defensive tackle who can
- 19:37Speaker 6: disrupt in the run and get penetration and get sacks.
- 19:42Speaker 5: They need that. I think, even though they.
- 19:46Speaker 6: Have players who are already there on the defensive line,
- 19:49Speaker 6: you can sign guys and rotate, so you don't necessarily
- 19:52Speaker 6: have a.
- 19:52Speaker 5: Starter in your spots. I would love this guy. I
- 19:56Speaker 5: don't think he's.
- 19:57Speaker 4: Gonna be available.
- 19:57Speaker 3: There's a defensive tackle from Illinois and a defensive tackle
- 20:01Speaker 3: from Texas who I've been told is this guy right
- 20:05Speaker 3: lower center of gravity, exceptionally quick, that can chase and
- 20:09Speaker 3: pursue in pass rush. So maybe you take the offensive
- 20:12Speaker 3: guard in free agency and you spend the defensive tackle
- 20:16Speaker 3: is your choice. They're at seventeen if that's where you
- 20:18Speaker 3: stick in the draft.
- 20:19Speaker 4: But you can.
- 20:20Speaker 3: He's a great player, and there are a couple of
- 20:23Speaker 3: guys in the draft that resemble.
- 20:24Speaker 6: That they just so much needed. This goes back to
- 20:27Speaker 6: Trent's comments in the pressor they felt like they didn't
- 20:34Speaker 6: dictate on the two fronts last year so much, and
- 20:38Speaker 6: that they were, you know, trying to get around that,
- 20:41Speaker 6: trying to hope and figure out a way to win
- 20:43Speaker 6: even though they weren't very good there.
- 20:45Speaker 5: You know, it's a game of big, bad, mean people
- 20:49Speaker 5: who enforce their will. They didn't do that enough.
- 20:54Speaker 2: I think all of our picks I picked a raven
- 20:56Speaker 2: as well. We're all picking teams that are going to
- 20:58Speaker 2: have trouble signing all of these players because they have
- 21:00Speaker 2: good teams. But they also have many of them available.
- 21:03Speaker 2: So I went with Patrick Queen because for me, and
- 21:07Speaker 2: this is not a knock on Foya Lucan, but he's
- 21:09Speaker 2: on the last year of his deal. He's very expensive
- 21:11Speaker 2: as well. Patrick Queen's young, He's played on a team
- 21:14Speaker 2: and this is a big thing I've been harping on
- 21:16Speaker 2: with you guys. Playing on a team that has established
- 21:19Speaker 2: success and you know what that standard is. Playing on
- 21:22Speaker 2: a Baltimore team where they know what they need to
- 21:24Speaker 2: do every single day to kind of meet that standard,
- 21:27Speaker 2: specifically on the defensive side of the football, that's someone
- 21:30Speaker 2: you need, and specifically at a linebacker position where you're communicating.
- 21:34Speaker 2: You know, we saw more than a few breakdowns between
- 21:36Speaker 2: the secondary and the front the line on the defensive
- 21:39Speaker 2: side of the football. I feel like having a young,
- 21:42Speaker 2: younger player, talented and someone that knows what the standard
- 21:45Speaker 2: of a good defensive football team is could be huge
- 21:48Speaker 2: for this team. And again not a knock on anybody here,
- 21:50Speaker 2: but just to have that longer term and have someone
- 21:53Speaker 2: a point person that can direct kind of the quarterback,
- 21:55Speaker 2: if you will, on the defensive side of the football
- 21:57Speaker 2: can be huge and it would be really helpful.
- 21:59Speaker 3: I'd really like to talk to the defensive coordinators find
- 22:01Speaker 3: out what he's looking for in the linebacker, right, I mean,
- 22:04Speaker 3: Queen is the guy who can do it all, So
- 22:05Speaker 3: who wouldn't want him?
- 22:06Speaker 4: I mean he runs and chases.
- 22:08Speaker 3: If he's a guy who can play in coverage and
- 22:09Speaker 3: even rush the pass, or he's a really complete linebacker, yeah,
- 22:13Speaker 3: I'll take him.
- 22:14Speaker 6: Yeah, this would be some of these we're talking about,
- 22:17Speaker 6: and I think Queen fits into this category. Would be
- 22:20Speaker 6: a major change because you've you would be by definition,
- 22:24Speaker 6: replacing high profile players and going in a new direction
- 22:30Speaker 6: making contract sacrifices. So I don't know if realistic they'd
- 22:34Speaker 6: be ready to do that, but he'd be an upgrade.
- 22:38Speaker 3: You mentioned that the Ravens of the Dolphins, these are
- 22:40Speaker 3: teams that are going to have trouble signing all their players.
- 22:43Speaker 3: I mean the Jaguars are going to reach that point
- 22:44Speaker 3: here pretty quickly too.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Sure, I just have to decide who it's going to
- 22:48Speaker 2: be that sticks around for a little bit longer.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Stay with us here.
- 22:51Speaker 2: We're gonna look ahead to this offseason, what we've got
- 22:52Speaker 2: coming up after the break.
- 23:06Speaker 8: Hi, what I was talking about as my dog, as
- 23:15Speaker 8: my doll, man made me proud.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Liked up there the Pro Bowl games, Evan Ingram starring
- 23:23Speaker 2: the flag football there, Josh Allen's doing a little bit,
- 23:26Speaker 2: and then our long snapper Ross Mattisick as well, our
- 23:29Speaker 2: our only all pro as well, So Ross does have
- 23:31Speaker 2: the bragging rights from last season. We're gonna get to
- 23:34Speaker 2: a couple of fanatic fan questions. We have talked about
- 23:36Speaker 2: some of this, but we'll go over it again. Of course,
- 23:38Speaker 2: fanatics has all the jag styles. You can check out
- 23:40Speaker 2: fanatics dot Com officially licensed everything, so we'll check that
- 23:43Speaker 2: out for sure. One of our fan questions is in
- 23:46Speaker 2: regards to Josh Allen and Calvin Ridley, can you keep
- 23:48Speaker 2: vote those guys?
- 23:49Speaker 1: John, We talked talked.
- 23:49Speaker 2: A little bit about this, but monetarily is that something
- 23:52Speaker 2: that they can do with the kind of signed Josh
- 23:54Speaker 2: franchise tag?
- 23:55Speaker 1: Would that be the way to go with it?
- 23:56Speaker 6: Well, you can, And there's a little bit of a
- 23:58Speaker 6: misconception that you can't sign these guys because there's no
- 24:02Speaker 6: room in the cap right now. Usually when you sign guys,
- 24:07Speaker 6: their cap number comes down from what it's projected in
- 24:10Speaker 6: your one in year one and maybe even year two,
- 24:13Speaker 6: it's just a matter of you can do anything you
- 24:16Speaker 6: want with the cap. The best analogy that I've heard
- 24:19Speaker 6: is you can do anything in the short term, but
- 24:21Speaker 6: you're also putting money on the credit card, and eventually
- 24:23Speaker 6: you got to pay the credit card back.
- 24:25Speaker 5: So yes, they can do they want to do that.
- 24:29Speaker 6: In terms of mortgaging the future, I don't know they
- 24:32Speaker 6: answer to that question, but they could conceivably do that
- 24:37Speaker 6: and re sign Trevor Lawrence to a long term deal
- 24:40Speaker 6: because those initial cap numbers are going to be small.
- 24:42Speaker 6: It's just a matter of how much do they love
- 24:45Speaker 6: these guys in twenty twenty six to be paying for
- 24:47Speaker 6: them still.
- 24:48Speaker 3: You know, I lived through the cap nearly imploding in
- 24:50Speaker 3: two thousand and two. Here if the Texans hadn't taken
- 24:53Speaker 3: Tony Boscelli in the expansion draft, Oh, the Jaguars couldn't
- 24:56Speaker 3: get under the cap, and the league didn't want to
- 24:58Speaker 3: see that problem. So since then, I've been very conservative
- 25:02Speaker 3: about making sure that you're always protecting the future.
- 25:05Speaker 4: The hell with it, Let's go right. There's so much.
- 25:08Speaker 3: Money coming into this game now, and it's being driven
- 25:11Speaker 3: by some outside forces that are just pumping even more
- 25:13Speaker 3: money into this Let's be creative.
- 25:15Speaker 4: Let's go find a way to get him done. You
- 25:17Speaker 4: can get it done right.
- 25:19Speaker 3: You may have to franchise it, but ideally you'd like
- 25:21Speaker 3: to get both of them done to deals so that
- 25:23Speaker 3: you don't have to mess with the franchise tag. And
- 25:25Speaker 3: you've got that in your back pocket somewhere else. It
- 25:28Speaker 3: just means you've got to be clever, you've got to
- 25:30Speaker 3: be aggressive, and you got to get a lot of
- 25:31Speaker 3: work done in the next twenty.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Seven days talking money still, is Trevor Lawrence someone that
- 25:37Speaker 2: you look at an extension for this offseason or do
- 25:40Speaker 2: we kick the can down to next season?
- 25:42Speaker 4: Oh? I think you try to get something done by
- 25:44Speaker 4: the start of this season.
- 25:45Speaker 3: But he may not want to because he doesn't have
- 25:47Speaker 3: all the leverage based on this last year.
- 25:49Speaker 5: I think that's the tricky part.
- 25:51Speaker 6: Yes, you'd like to if you do it this year
- 25:55Speaker 6: and demand on the other side, and I have no
- 25:57Speaker 6: idea what Tervor I mean.
- 25:59Speaker 5: I see when Trevor on't because they all want a lot.
- 26:02Speaker 6: But if you do it this year, it's it's a
- 26:05Speaker 6: hard sell right now to put him above Borough Allan Mahomes.
- 26:11Speaker 6: At the same time, from his point of view, that's
- 26:14Speaker 6: what franchise quarterbacks go for. So I've been asked this
- 26:19Speaker 6: a lot in the last month. I admit I kind
- 26:21Speaker 6: of waffle on it. Yeah, they want to get it done.
- 26:24Speaker 6: Somebody said, well, dude, incentives, you're not going to get
- 26:27Speaker 6: a super a super good, team friendly deal.
- 26:32Speaker 5: It's just not how it works from a quarterback.
- 26:33Speaker 6: So they really have to decide do we believe that
- 26:38Speaker 6: this guy is going to ascend to that level.
- 26:43Speaker 5: I'm not smart enough to the answer, Brian.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Yeah, you know he's going to get fifty six to
- 26:46Speaker 3: fifty seven million, because that's the next contract that comes in.
- 26:49Speaker 3: If I were him again, I would think about, let's
- 26:52Speaker 3: find a way to get let me prove to you
- 26:54Speaker 3: in September that I am what I am, and then
- 26:57Speaker 3: we'll get a deal done.
- 26:58Speaker 6: And I think that I'm sorry. The team can say
- 27:05Speaker 6: we love you, man, but we can't quite go to
- 27:09Speaker 6: fifty five right now. And he was okay before he
- 27:14Speaker 6: got hurt, but he didn't get to that level to
- 27:18Speaker 6: earn that fifty five.
- 27:19Speaker 5: Not that he won't. It doesn't mean we're insulting you.
- 27:21Speaker 6: It doesn't mean that both sides I think could probably
- 27:25Speaker 6: say to each other, Yeah, we kind of get.
- 27:26Speaker 3: It, but his agent is not going to want to
- 27:27Speaker 3: come in below the previous contract. That's not good for them.
- 27:31Speaker 6: Both sides can be right and not find a deal,
- 27:34Speaker 6: which is why if he comes out on fire in September,
- 27:37Speaker 6: the Jaguars can jump and go, hey, here's what we
- 27:39Speaker 6: were thinking about.
- 27:39Speaker 4: You can get this deal done or wait till next year.
- 27:42Speaker 5: The beauty of it.
- 27:43Speaker 3: Is is that you have this is his fourth season
- 27:45Speaker 3: and you have the fifth year option. You don't want
- 27:48Speaker 3: to get there because this is a guy that you love,
- 27:50Speaker 3: you want to love, but you got it, so you
- 27:52Speaker 3: don't have to panic.
- 27:53Speaker 1: We'll have to see.
- 27:54Speaker 2: That's definitely one of the big questions for the off
- 27:56Speaker 2: season and the off season coming up. We've got the
- 27:58Speaker 2: Combine in a couple of weeks, will be focused in
- 28:00Speaker 2: on the draft, and Jagsam will be back every week
- 28:03Speaker 2: here on Tuesday to talk you through all of it.
- 28:05Speaker 2: So thank you for joining us and joy the off season.
- 28:07Speaker 2: We'll see you next week.
