- 2:45our good friend Milly Snyder from the Shape Shop. How you doing, I'm
- 2:47wonderful, how are you happy? Early? Thanksgiving? Thank you the same
- 2:51to you and the same to everybody who's listening. I want to start off
- 2:54by talking about the issues on on the west side. Of course, that's
- 2:58where that's where the shape shop. Yes, we don't have heat because we
- 3:01don't have gas. And yesterday my wonderful staff decided to make vegetable soup,
- 3:07and I mean a huge potful, but we used our grill and my role
- 3:13in making sure we could make vegetable soup. Vegetable soup, my husband used
- 3:17to say vegetable. He couldn't say vegetable anyway. I had to go and
- 3:23get the propane tank filled. So if anyone is interested in hot vegetable soup,
- 3:28please come on down and get it, and then you'll have to heat
- 3:30it up in your microwave. So exactly, and I've known people that have
- 3:35done that, that have made soup on a grill like that. Exactly.
- 3:38How does it differ. I mean, it's basically the same process process.
- 3:42It just that it took longer because of the propane heat. And when we
- 3:46make vegetable soup we make it in a huge pot, so of course it
- 3:50took a little longer. But that vegetable soup is to die for. What
- 3:53do you put in your vegetables? Every vegetable you can think of, everyone,
- 3:57but we don't use starches, we don't use peas, we don't use
- 4:00potatoes, we don't use anything that is a carb in that soup. So
- 4:05a lot of Keto people love our vegetable soup because it's just vegetables. Okay,
- 4:11And what about the base of the soup. I mean, the base
- 4:15of the soup is one of the bullyons that not bullions, but one of
- 4:18the soup mixes that we use. We have a great chicken one. When
- 4:21we season our vegetable soup, sometimes we use a little bit of our ham
- 4:26seasoning in it. But I'm telling you, the chicken and the vegetables in
- 4:30the vegetable soup is absolutely wonderful. Now you folks are as you said,
- 4:35you're still open of there, you just absolutely so. We don't have heat,
- 4:40and what we're encouraging people who do have microwaves or air fryers to come
- 4:45in and pick up some of the frozen grab and go dinners that have been
- 4:48made by Tiffany, who's part of our staff, and just take them home
- 4:54and then you can heat them up so you'll have a fresh, delicious meal
- 4:58without having to go to eat nasty fast food. Yeah, and I say
- 5:03nasty because it's not fresh and it's but your food is very matter of fact.
- 5:09I had who it was, Our good friend Mark Curtis from from w
- 5:14w K TV thirteen, the political reporter, did a post a couple of
- 5:16days ago about going down there and having lunch. I saw him. He
- 5:18was out on his way to one of the biscuit places and he saw our
- 5:23sign. He stopped in and he bought a rap And what did he say
- 5:27about it? He said, it was fantastic. Well that's I'll actually I'll
- 5:30try to while you're talking. I'll try to pull it up here on the
- 5:32old on the social media and I'll read it for you. But yeah,
- 5:35yeah, he did. He was very I'm I'm a big fan of the
- 5:38raps too. That's usually kind of raps are even getting better and better.
- 5:42We're gonna take We're going to bring our truck to Hope Village at the first
- 5:46Presby on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. So I want to just let people know
- 5:51they can make a note on our on the calendar. We're going to be
- 5:55there from eleven to three on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Absolutely, and I
- 6:00want to talk about Thanksgiving a little bit of course, this is your final
- 6:02visit before Thanksgiving. You come up with us once a month. So,
- 6:09so how do you do healthy Thanksgiving? Well? Number one? What's on
- 6:13your what's on the menu? If I if I show up at Millie Sneyder's
- 6:15house, yes, well am I going to eat? We're going to have
- 6:17turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans. My daughter is
- 6:25going to be making and she told me yesterday on the phone. She'll be
- 6:29coming back from her time in Florida and she makes a wonderful stuffing. But
- 6:33it's all healthy because I mean, she had no choice but to grow up
- 6:38with all of that. And we're going to have rolls. But the thing
- 6:42I want to talk about is how you make gravy. And you know what
- 6:46you do. You go to the bottom of the pan where the turkey has
- 6:48been cooking all day, and you get all that juice and fat and you
- 6:54put it in a big bowl. What I would like everyone to do is
- 6:58put that bowl in freezer for about thirty minutes and then take it out of
- 7:03the freezer and all that fat is going to come to the top. You're
- 7:09gonna take a knife and you're gonna run it around the rim, and you're
- 7:13gonna lift that fat and you're gonna put it in the garbage can. Oh
- 7:16my god, don't get nervous. Then you're gonna take all that wonderful broth.
- 7:21You're gonna put it in a saucepan, and then you're going to thicken
- 7:25it with either arrowroot or flour, and then you're gonna put it in the
- 7:30gravy bowl, and then you're gonna put it on the table. I guarantee
- 7:35you when your guests, family members, whoever you're having, taste that gravy,
- 7:42they are gonna say, oh my god, Hazel, this is the
- 7:46best gravy I've ever had. And no one is gonna say, honey,
- 7:50you left the fat out of this. That gravy will be outstanding. Why
- 7:56do I want you to do that? Because that fat is saturated, and
- 8:01that's saturated fat is what hurts us. Taste good in your mouth, but
- 8:07it hurts you internally. Let's learn to do some old things differently. Not
- 8:11sacrifice taste, not sacrifice Thanksgiving, but let's do little things differently, and
- 8:20stop using bacon grease to season all those vegetables. Come to the shape shop,
- 8:26get some ham seasoning. Some chicken seasoning, some beef seasoning, and
- 8:30I'm telling you your guests will love it in addition to yourself. So what
- 8:33about desserts? What about them? What kind of desserts do you have for
- 8:37your house? You gotta have desserts. I have a pumpkin pie. Okay,
- 8:41what makes your pumpkin pie different? Well, my pumpkin pie that we
- 8:43make at the Shape shop is crustless. It's just most people leave the crust
- 8:48because everybody says I want to diet, but that pumpkin pie is just delicious.
- 8:54And I usually when I buy them for myself from the store, I
- 8:58get three for and I keep them in the refrigerator and then I gradually use
- 9:03it as an evening snack and devour them. Also, what am I having?
- 9:07Uh? One of my friends, one of my friends that's coming is
- 9:11making brownies, the real, honest to God way of making brownies. Because
- 9:18three of my grandsons are going to be Oh well I have I only have
- 9:20three grandsons. They're going to be there, and they are brownie lovers.
- 9:24But you know, everything in moderation, why not have a real brownie?
- 9:30Why not have a piece of pie? All right? But in moderation.
- 9:33In moderation, nobody's saying that, but that's important, no matter if you're
- 9:41following Mediterranean or you're doing some other kakamami diet that's out there. And everybody
- 9:48you never heard of that word. Oh of course I have. It's crazy.
- 9:50It's crazy everything in moderation. And by the way, my Mediterranean group
- 9:58now has two meetings, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon.
- 10:01And if you really want to learn how to eat, and you know,
- 10:05support groups now are gone, but they're not gone in my world.
- 10:09And I would love you to come. We do it on Thursday Thursday at
- 10:11nine to fifteen Thursday afternoon at four fifteen. Okay, Millie signed it from
- 10:16the Shape shop is here. It's become a I guess a Thanksgiving tradition.
- 10:20I've been doing this show. This would be my third fourth Thanksgiving, third
- 10:24Thanksgiving that I've done the show. Math is not my strong suit. It
- 10:28mainly looks. But excuse me, that was a laugh. But you every
- 10:35year you tell us a story for Thanksgiving. Yes, all right, so
- 10:39I'm going to Everybody has to get comfortable. This is just a few minutes,
- 10:41all right, Jeff, let's everybody gather around the radio here because Millie
- 10:46has a story to tell us. It's the it's the story. It's a
- 10:50exciting Thanksgiving story courtesy of Millie's. It's not that exciting, oh, it's
- 10:54rip it is. It's called Black November. Turkey's lament, all right.
- 11:00When I was a young Turkey new to the coop, my big brother Mike
- 11:03took me out on the stoop. Then he sat me down, and he
- 11:05spoke real slow, and he told me there was something that I had to
- 11:09know. His look, in his tone, I will always remember when he
- 11:13told me of the horrors of black November come about August. Now, listen
- 11:18to me. Each day you'll be thick where once you were thin, and
- 11:20you'll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin. And then one morning,
- 11:24when you're warming your bed, it'll burst the farmer's wife and hack off your
- 11:28head. Then she'll pluck out all your feathers so you're bald and pink,
- 11:33and scoop out your insides and leave you lyin' in the sink. And then
- 11:37comes the worst party, said not bluffing'. She'll spread your cheeks and pack
- 11:41your rear with stuffin'. Well, the rest of his words were too grim
- 11:46to repeat. I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat,
- 11:50and decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked, I'd have to lay
- 11:54low and remain overlooked. I began a new diet of nuts and granola,
- 12:00high ruffed salade, juice and dia cola, And as they ate pastries,
- 12:05chocolate and crapes, I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes. I
- 12:09maintained my weight of two pounds and a half and tried to notice when the
- 12:13bigger birds laughed. But twas I who was laughing under my breath as they
- 12:18chomped and they chewed ever closer to death. And sure enough, when Black
- 12:22November rolled around, I was the last turkey in the entire compound. So
- 12:26now I'm a pet in the farmer's wife's lap. I haven't a worry,
- 12:31so I eat and I nap. She held me today while sewing and humming,
- 12:35and smiled at me and said, Christmas is coming. I love it.
- 12:41I do too, I love it. It's part of It's as big
- 12:43a Thanksgiving tradition as a Macy's Day parade. Well that's the that's a pretty
- 12:48big thing. Well a story behind that. Where did that come from?
- 12:50Well, you know, this story was given to me number of years ago
- 12:54when I was the franchise owner for weight Watchers, and I think my members
- 12:58in the classes that I conducted looked forward to this story as much as I
- 13:03looked forward to sharing it. And it's just a lot of fun. Indeed,
- 13:07it is so accept The part about laying in the Saint you know,
- 13:13it's a little violent and there it is some amount of nudity in there.
- 13:16But all right, so my god, this is X rated. Yeah.
- 13:20Well it's on a radio though, so it's okay. All right, So
- 13:22Black Friday? What are you doing for Black Friday? Black Friday, We're
- 13:26not going to do anything except be open. We're going to be open,
- 13:31but we'll probably for a limited number of hours because we want we don't know
- 13:35yet, but we'll be posting it on Facebook. And then on Saturday after
- 13:39Thanksgiving for bringing our truck over to Hope Village at First Presby. They have
- 13:46a wonderful program with artisans from other countries and we're going to be there from
- 13:50eleven to three so you'll be able to eat something healthy after Thanksgiving. All
- 13:56right, Well, hopefully here soon everybody will be back online far as the
- 14:00gas situation goes. They do have some online, but again as I had
- 14:03I had mister scaff on the show yesterday, they said it would be seven
- 14:07to ten days before everyone was fully restored, but it's going to come on
- 14:09slowly. Then they have to have the process of literally going from building to
- 14:13building to everyone to make sure that everything is okay. And yesterday when I
- 14:18was out and about around the west Side Mountaineer Gas was they had so many
- 14:22different crew members working in different plays. Well over one hundred, well over
- 14:26h I mean, I mean, I didn't count, but it made me
- 14:28feel good that they weren't taking this lightly because it's a very serious situation.
- 14:33It is very serious. Merely as always, it is a pleasure to talk
- 14:37to you. We'll talk again next month. Thanks a lot, Thanks,

- 18:30always know because because we're all cousins. That's why a kind of a combination
- 18:34of like cousins and trauma bond Yeah, guys, let's talk about Holly Jolly
- 18:41Brawley. Who wants to start? Go ahead, Kevin, take it away?
- 18:42All right? So this is our third big year. It kicks off
- 18:47at noon on Black Friday. Start Art Walk kicks off on Black Friday,
- 18:52and it runs from noon until eight. The Holly Jolly Brawley festivities kick off
- 18:56at noon. This year, we've done it again and again I'm gonna I'm
- 19:03gonna thank them now with the City of Charleston and the grace of God,
- 19:07they've been incredible. They have worked their tails off. We have one hundred
- 19:11and sixty trees this year for our tree display, and we're expanding the footprint.
- 19:17So we've of course City Center at Slack Plaza, down Brawley Walkway,
- 19:22throughout Lee Triangle, and this year we have a new location in the Kennall
- 19:26County Public Library of the downtown branch. So they'll be trees displayed there as
- 19:30well. It's just getting bigger and our city. I mean, it's gonna
- 19:33look incredible, you know, I was. I was actually telling Kevin.
- 19:37I was like, you know, from day one, we've had these visions.
- 19:40We're like, oh, we need a snow machine, we need a
- 19:42light show, we need a Christmas village, all these things you know we
- 19:45always kind of like fantasized about in our head. It's happening this year.
- 19:49We have the second year of our synchronized light show. We have purchased two
- 19:55snow machines so it will snow in Brawley. We have Christmas Vendor Village.
- 20:00We have everything just to make you feel all the magic of Christmas. And
- 20:04not only do we have the two day festival, it's also up to enjoy
- 20:10until first of the year, so you know the main goal of it.
- 20:12You know, it drives traffic downtown. It you know, helps the local
- 20:17businesses, It puts foot traffic, it helps photographers. It's just beautiful and
- 20:21it just gives you the nostalgic feeling of Christmas that we all love when we
- 20:25were kids. I feel like, and it's it's honestly as corny as it
- 20:27sounds. Magical well and both of you. One of the things I like
- 20:30about the fact that you guys are so involved in this along with your organization.
- 20:34We'll talk about that a little bit later on, is that you're both
- 20:37business you both run businesses, you are business owners here in Charleston. That's
- 20:40what we So you see the benefits of this absolutely. I mean, the
- 20:45mean restaurants were on waits last year. This event brings people from Kentucky and
- 20:52Ohio. You know, they come downtown, they park, they eat,
- 20:56they shop, they go see the lights. This year they can up on
- 21:00the Holly Jolly Brawley trolley. Yeah, so we've added another one of the
- 21:03indie alliteration there. That's good. We did Jolly Brally Tralley and it'll actually
- 21:08run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from four to ten pm. And it
- 21:15has four stops, which is City Center, Lee Triangle, Capital Market because
- 21:18don't forget Capital Market's going to have their Christmas village and the Light of Night
- 21:23at the ballpark. So the city, you know Kart, the City,
- 21:27they've teamed up. You have a Holly Jolly Brawley trolley to take you to
- 21:32all the Christmas stops, which to me, you know, in the sense
- 21:34of a small business owner, drives people down here because it makes us a
- 21:38Christmas destination. And we're going to have on speaking of the ballpark, We're
- 21:41going to have Eaten Douglas from The Dirty Birds. It's going to be on
- 21:45the show. She's going to be in your position where you were last Friday
- 21:47as my guest host is Friday. So Eden's been on the show dozens of
- 21:51times, but she's never been in as a guest host. So she's going
- 21:52to be on as a guest host coming up with the show on Friday.
- 21:56And again you know, it's all this Christmas stuff all in one location in
- 22:02Charleston. I mean, it's gonna be awesome, you know that. I
- 22:04mean I travel every year to New York City around December usually because I love
- 22:10the Christmas feeling. You know. I feel like people travel for things like
- 22:14that, they travel for what they love. So I think the fact that
- 22:17you know, we can grow this and we can build this, and now
- 22:18the momentum is catching and there are people you know, on board with this
- 22:22vision, like the ballpark and Capital Market, and to me, you know,
- 22:26look at how big it is now. Imagine it ten years from now
- 22:32what we can do and what we can grow with it, because I think
- 22:33we all have the same common goal here, and that's just to see Charleston
- 22:37thrive. How much talk about the work that goes into this and talk about
- 22:41the I mean, obviously, you know, you two in your organization,
- 22:44you work yourtails off on this, but there's a lot of other people that
- 22:47are involved in this as well, from sponsors and people that make donations and
- 22:51things that nature talk about all that. Now, we have a great group
- 22:53of volunteers this year. We've it's been a huge blessing for us. I
- 22:59mean, we've got you know, we've got a core group of really really
- 23:03really good volunteers that have stepped up. We've got some organizations Maverick Gymnastics,
- 23:08Capitol High School bandbooster Parents. You know, if it wasn't for them,
- 23:12I mean, set up would be a nightmare. This coming week. We've
- 23:15got great sponsors again, you know, City of Charleston. You know,
- 23:19from the get go there may A Goodwin and her administration have been incredible from
- 23:25the from the jump. We have you know, there's our list of sponsors
- 23:30is incredible, twenty five sponsors. I mean, you know, American water
- 23:34was Virginia. I mean I could literally we'd be here all day naming.
- 23:37Yeah, I get it, I get it. It's it's it's takes a
- 23:41village. It really does. And while it just might be you know,
- 23:42me, Kevin Bryan, a couple like Miranda Jane, like we might be
- 23:47all sitting down, you know, doing the logistics behind it, it truly
- 23:48takes a village. You got to look at the public Grounds who built almost
- 23:52two hundred hand built tree stands. Like we were just talking to Mike right
- 23:56before we came here, and he said, you know, this took twelve
- 23:59hours a day, six days a week since September just to build the tree
- 24:03stands. So they go that that's gonna protect us from trees falling over in
- 24:07the elements they imagine Unison. I mean you're talking hand built from scratching painted.
- 24:12People will never truly realize, just like anything, you just don't realize
- 24:15what goes into it until you do it. And you know, it truly
- 24:18takes a village of community. And I just could not be more thankful for,
- 24:22you know, all the support that we've received from literally every angle.
- 24:27Talking about Holly Jolly Brawley which this year is gonna have a trolley by Golly,
- 24:34I'm running out of things to say here with Morgan Morrison and Kevin Madison
- 24:41here on the show. Okay, so it runs throughout the Christmas season,
- 24:44but it actually starts on Black Friday. What are people when they come out
- 24:47on Friday twelve noon next Friday, what are they gonna see? All right?
- 24:49What happened? So of course you know they're gonna you're gonna you're gonna
- 24:52see the trees. You're gonna see the trees. New this year a life
- 24:56sized snow globe that you and your family can get in and have your photo
- 25:00taken inside the inside the snow glove. Okay, and we also have a
- 25:04three sixty photo bits sponsored by Goodwill. Absolutely, we have entertainment. We're
- 25:10gonna have a triple a entertainment on Capitol Street with our Basically we've dedicated my
- 25:15man JK JK the DJ. He's going to be there providing DJ his DJ
- 25:21services on Friday and Saturday Friday. Santa Claus Is on Capitol Street. This
- 25:25year, West Banco stepped up. They provided an inflatable Christmas village. We
- 25:30have a thirty foot tall by forty foot long alpine snowslide. Yeah, the
- 25:36adults can get on too. You get on an inner tube and slide down
- 25:38Capitol Street. Christmas Bounty houses, I mean, everything's Christmas. Then we
- 25:42have like we ordered these big life size cardboard gingerbird houses that are basically like
- 25:48gonna be a village of giant coloring books for kids, like letters to Santa.
- 25:53So Capitol Street's really for the kids. And then we have face painting,
- 25:56face paint everything, and then you know the Christmas Village vendors and DJEJ
- 26:03salim bro Redline Band. We've got entertainment for the adults and everything on Summers
- 26:08and City Center. It's big this year. And now when the Christmas Parade
- 26:12happens, i'd imagine it's going to be a a pretty off the church place
- 26:17to be while the Christmas Parade's going on. Absolutely absolutely, And let's not
- 26:22forget the hundreds of families that come down just to get their holiday photos.
- 26:26Yeah, we don't see Christmas cards anymore. That isn't taken in Brawley pretty
- 26:33much. And that kind of lends itself. As you talked about Christmas tourism.
- 26:37I mean people may think that that's not a thing. It is a
- 26:40thing, and that in our part of the world where you and I are
- 26:42originally from, Christmas in the Park started in the early nineteen nineties and there's
- 26:47literally people that come from all over the state and other states, church groups
- 26:52and whatever just for that. I know they see it in Saint Albans.
- 26:55I know that they see it not far from here in Gallipolis, Ohio.
- 26:57People go up there. Christmas tourism is a real thing, kids, it
- 27:02is. And it's so funny you mentioned Christmas in the Park because as far
- 27:04as you know, we all have our own reason. That was one of
- 27:07my biggest inspirations doing this, because you understand, you're a Logan guy.
- 27:11Every year after Thanksgiving dinner, we go get in that line and we go
- 27:15through Christmas in the Park. And you know, a town as small as
- 27:18Logan and I know thousands of people who's like, oh, we've got to
- 27:22make it the Christmas in the Park. And I think, you know,
- 27:26becoming one of those nostalgic locations is just it puts you on the map.
- 27:30Like you said, it's a thing, and there's just so many there's no
- 27:34negatives from it. I don't believe. Yeah, all right, well,
- 27:38I know that there's information available all over social media. You got just to
- 27:41a great job talk about your organization that you're part of the either one of
- 27:45you. This this Downtown Downtown Downtown Charleston Association started approximately four years ago,
- 27:52and you know, our goal is to put on events such as Holly Jolly
- 27:55Brawley to bring people downtown, to get them to support our local business is.
- 28:00We also produce Artwalk, which is always the third Thursday of every month,
- 28:06with the exception of November because we have Black Friday art Walk twelve to
- 28:10eight Downtown Charleston. Maps will be available on Summer Street and Capitol Streets.
- 28:15Yeah, so, I mean the DCA. You know, as much as
- 28:18I'd like to say that we're some big, corporate, amazing nonprofit, it's
- 28:22really just us. We're we're you know, managers, business owners on the
- 28:26street wanting to do whatever we can to play our part in helping the small
- 28:30businesses downtown and see them thrive. You know, we've seen firsthand the ups
- 28:34and downs of what it can be to have a business downtown. And so
- 28:38it's basically, you know a group of people that's just dedicated to doing whatever
- 28:44we can to advocate for these people and keep it successful and keep it thriving.
- 28:48And while Holly Jolly Brawly is our biggest baby out of this, we
- 28:52hope, especially next year, moving forward with this momentum, that we can
- 28:56throw out a lot more Halloween little Halloween teaser, another one after that.
- 29:04I think I'm gonna have you guys on again one day next week to kind
- 29:07of talk about this, remind people about it. But Kevin and Morgan is
- 29:10always a pleasure to have you on the show. Holly Jolly Brawley again starts
- 29:14on Black Friday at noon, uh, and we'll run Friday and Saturday,
- 29:18but then the actually that's just the two day thing. But then throughout the
- 29:22Christmas season it's all going to be lit up down there. And as you
- 29:25said, we've got that's part of it. What's going on over at the
- 29:26ballpark is part of it. So it's all good stuff bringing people to Charleston.

- 33:10Michael? Well, you know I I were I care to mentioned. I
- 33:17guess I'm going for the world record, but so far COVID's undefeated, So
- 33:22I I don't want another bout right right? All right? Well, in
- 33:25all seriousness, we hope that we hope that you get well soon. So
- 33:30now I do want to say this, as you well known, I want
- 33:31to get your take on some of the things going on with the with the
- 33:35gas issue on the West Side. But at some point, and this is
- 33:37kind of like a live radio thing, Mike, I didn't have a chance
- 33:39to discuss with you. If we may get a call or a text from
- 33:43our good friend Margaret O'Neill with the United Way, and if that is the
- 33:49case, if we do get a call from her, then I may briefly
- 33:52have to put you on hold to go to her for an update, but
- 33:54then we'll come right back. Okay, But that's great. I look forward
- 33:58to hearing all right. I don't know for sure because they're all in a
- 34:00meeting right now. They're all they're having meetings every morning, I think starting
- 34:06on Monday. They're having meetings every morning around nine fifteen, nine o'clock nine
- 34:09fifteen with the United Way, Red Cross, with Mountaineer Gas in West Virginia,
- 34:14American Water of course, the city of Charlton. We really appreciate them
- 34:17bringing everybody together trying to figure out how we can, you know, mitigate
- 34:22the the things that are going on over here on the West side. But
- 34:29yeah, I live over in the affected area as well, so you know,
- 34:34Saturday morning, I woke up and was shivering because I didn't realize at
- 34:40the time, but I had COVID and I still had a fever at the
- 34:44time, but didn't know what was going on. Checked, like a lot
- 34:46of folks on the West side, checked my thermostat and saw that I had
- 34:51no heat, and you checked the furnace. Didn't know what was going on.
- 34:54Maybe I had a problem with the furnace. And then as I was
- 34:59talking to name as we realized that none of us had any heat. And
- 35:01I think that was you know, the initial UH. One of the initial
- 35:06problems was this real lack of communication from from Mountaineer Gas and UH there was
- 35:12one TV story and so that they would have to cut off gas for some
- 35:16residents of the West Side. Nobody really knew the extent of it. Uh.
- 35:21You know, I don't know Mountaineer Gas it really understood the extent of
- 35:24it of how many UH customers were going to be without their service. UH.
- 35:31But that's how we found out about it. And that's that's a problem
- 35:35if the lack of communication. UH. So that's one thing that you know
- 35:40right now there's immediate needs to be that need to be met. But going
- 35:44forward, there's going to be some discussions about the UH you update alerts from
- 35:49our utilities and that will be addressed. Yeah, I had yesterday, I
- 35:52had one of the senior vice presidents. Uh, mister Scaff, Moses Skaff
- 35:57was on the show yesterday, and I don't think, and I'm not trying
- 36:00to put words in his mouth, he was gracious enough to take time out
- 36:02to come on the show yesterday. I don't know that initially that Mike,
- 36:07that they realized how bad it was, and but going forward, I think
- 36:13that they have been out in front of it trying to get communication out there.
- 36:16There's been some questions about what Virginia American water though. To be honest
- 36:20with you, there's all there have been questions about West virgin American Water for
- 36:23the past decade, have there not. I'll talk. We'll get to them
- 36:28here in a little bit. And while yes, the gas company did not,
- 36:31I don't think, to be honest, I don't think they did to
- 36:35the extent of it. However, they did know they were going to have
- 36:37to cut customers off, and there has to be some sort of alert system
- 36:42in place to let the rate payers know that they're not going to be receiving
- 36:45the services that they paid for. They are able to contact us when we
- 36:52are laid on a payment. They're able to contact us if they're going to
- 36:55cut us off for failure to pay. There's got to be a way for
- 36:58them to contact us US if, if, if they have to cut off
- 37:01service for another reason. Because a lot of us woke up Saturday morning cold,
- 37:07some of us woke up with a fever Saturday morning even colder, and
- 37:09didn't know why we didn't have heat or hot water in our house. Those
- 37:15of us who have gas, like most people who have gas heated hot water
- 37:20tanks, you know, and a lot of folks over here also have gas
- 37:22ranges, gas ovens, not able to cook their food. It's a it's
- 37:27a it's a serious, serious issue over here. But one thing that needs
- 37:30to be address going forward or their ability to communicate with their customers. And
- 37:36I don't think that's an unreasonable request. You know, We've got something in
- 37:39state law that we just passed recently about water companies. Whether they're a large
- 37:47privately owned water companies like West Virginia, American Water, or even the smaller
- 37:52publicly owned water companies, they are required to uh to alert their their customers
- 37:58when they have a boiled water advisory. That's in I believe, in the
- 38:01public Health section of Stakecode. But what needs to be updated in the in
- 38:06the park that addresses the Public Service Commission is that all utilities should be able
- 38:15to contact their customers when something like this occurs. Now, of course,
- 38:19nothing like this has ever occurred. I've never heard of this happening. Yeah,
- 38:22thirty two years in a business. He said he'd never seen anything like
- 38:25this. I've never heard anything like that. You know, it's just what
- 38:29I'm hearing is correct, and that you know, the water may busted and
- 38:32somehow got into a gas line and put this much water. And if you
- 38:37if you look at like the gas lines down here, especially on the lower
- 38:39part of the flats, I saw where a friend of mine unhooked her gas
- 38:45line into her furnace and it was like a water pipe. It wasn't a
- 38:47little bit of water. It was gallons upon gallons coming out of that water
- 38:53pipe. So nothing like this has ever happened. I understand that. But
- 38:58it's it's definitely not unreasonable to expect better communication from our utilities. And that's
- 39:05what's that what will be addressed going forward. I do you know, while
- 39:09I LAUNCHEDY, I do want to mention that there's a tremendous amount of good
- 39:14work being done by folks over here on the west side and a lot of
- 39:17friends and folks on the west side who are coming in. Whether it's West
- 39:22Virginia Health Right that has a location on the west side, and Shala Leverage
- 39:25is doing a great justice. They're preparing hot meals for people every day,
- 39:29and they're doing a great job of distributing whether it's the space heaters or blankets
- 39:35or hot plates wherever people need over here. They're doing a great job.
- 39:38The City of Charleston has done a great job of putting information out there.
- 39:43They're going door to door with the Fire Department with the Red Cross, and
- 39:46that's something that really need to mention. The booking everybody over here using space
- 39:52heaters, we need we need people to stay warm, but we also need
- 39:55people to stay safe. Make sure that those heaters are at least three feet
- 40:00away from anything that's flammable. That includes people. Don't leave your heaters undattended.
- 40:07Make sure they're on a solid, flat surface. And also what's real
- 40:12important to the fire department, the Mayor's going out with them going door to
- 40:15door to check on people's smoke alarms. Yeah. Actually, so interesting that
- 40:20you would say that, Mike, because as we're speaking I just got a
- 40:22text from somebody at the city asking me to talk about that, but I'll
- 40:24let you do it. Go ahead, okay, Well, the number to
- 40:28call is eight four four two one six eight two eight six, select option
- 40:34two and they will come by the fire department. Red Cross will come by
- 40:39and inspect your your your fire alarms or smoke detectors. Uh. And there's
- 40:44also you can go on It's just like looks like the link I have this
- 40:49is free smoke alarms. I think that would find it. And they're providing
- 40:52free smoke alarms free uh free uh uh. You know, detectors for people's
- 40:58houses. With everybody using these space heaters, and then we really got to
- 41:02keep an eye on that and make sure everybody is warm but also safe from
- 41:07fire. Yeah, and I'll get that information use these space heaters, but
- 41:12that information needs to be out there. And we do know that everybody wants
- 41:15to stay warm. And I know there's been various volunteers in the community going
- 41:19out and getting and collecting heaters, and that's all well and good and God
- 41:22bless those folks are doing that. However, there's, as you said,
- 41:25Mike, there's there's a safe way to do it and just handing out,
- 41:29just handing out heaters without addressing people how to properly use them. I mean,
- 41:34it sounds elementary, but it's really not because some of the stories that
- 41:37I have been hearing. I was talking to the mayor yesterday and some of
- 41:39the things that they were saying about when the fire department and the city officials
- 41:45are going from door to door in some of the ways that people are are
- 41:47hooking up these heaters. Although heaters now are much safer than they were thirty
- 41:52forty years ago, Doeshn's fool proof, So you got to know what you're
- 41:54doing now. And with a lot of the heaters being donated, they might
- 41:59some of them might be thirty or forty ar Yeah, we don't know.
- 42:00We don't know what kind of heaters people are using. I put a fact
- 42:05sheet out on my official Facebook page, my delegate facebook page. I know
- 42:08the city has the same fact sheet out on their social media. I'll repost
- 42:15it later. But just like a heater check list and the tips for safe
- 42:19use of space heaters, it's where we need people to stay warm, but
- 42:21we need them to stay safe as well. Yeah, exactly right. Mike
- 42:23Pushkin is here with us one. I just actually the thing that the city
- 42:28sent mean that you're referring to. I actually, just as we were speaking
- 42:31there, just posted it on my Facebook page on Dave all and Radio on

- 45:02V one hundred percent Working Women's Wednesday this and every Wednesday at five at the
- 45:07Red Carpet Lounge, Texas. It's unimaginable that residents of the West Side are
- 45:09being forced to endure this debacle for up to two weeks. Why are they
- 45:14not being provided housing in local motels? Once again, the West Side being
- 45:17blanked on. Mike Pushkin, who not only represents the area, but that
- 45:22lives in the area, and he's without heat this morning and he's suffering from
- 45:25COVID, is with us, Mike any comment? Well, I think it's
- 45:30important to put out there. There's a lot there too. The information that
- 45:36denis of that needs to be correct information. We need to make sure everything
- 45:38that we're putting out is true. I think there was stuff put out there
- 45:43about vouchers from the DHHR, that is, you know, that's not true.
- 45:47Even if there was to be a state of emergency declaring, which there
- 45:52has not been, from the Governor's office, it wouldn't be the DHHR,
- 45:57which is now the Department of Healthy and the Department and Resources of that would
- 46:00it wouldn't be coming from them, it would be coming from another agency.
- 46:05If that were the case, but that's not the case. I think that
- 46:07there are talks for people who are in extreme need. There are some talks
- 46:14may work something out with local hotels, but I can't for certain put that
- 46:19information out there yet. I would recommend that people do keep track of any
- 46:24expenditures, keep track of any receipts, because there's already been a class action
- 46:30suit filed, so that would be information you're going to want to have in
- 46:32the future of just how much you're having to spend. And Micha, let
- 46:36me jumping here, because speaking of that state of emergency, there's been some
- 46:38questions raised in social media as to why hasn't there been a state of emergency.
- 46:44I actually was in contact with some folks with the city and from what
- 46:49I am being told, and you probably are more knowledgeable about this than I
- 46:52am, but according to the information that I received is that as of now,
- 46:58this does not meet the level of a state of emergency. Now.
- 47:01The Mayor's office, and I talked to them earlier today, said that they
- 47:05will be working to get that done if it qualifies. But as of now,
- 47:10and that was of about eight fifteen or so this morning, this does
- 47:15not qualify as a state of emergency as of now according to code, and
- 47:19I don't know what that threshold is, but that's something that the Governor's office
- 47:23would would have to determine. I'd say. In the meantime, I think
- 47:28the City of Charleston has, once they really realized the extent of the damages
- 47:35over here and the extent of the situation, has really stepped up first of
- 47:38all and having these morning meetings with all of the parties involved and doing their
- 47:44best to get relief out to the people, whether that's you know, safe
- 47:46space, heaters, hot food. There's now showers over at the King Center
- 47:52down closer downtown and the North Charleston Rec Center, I believe boad or being
- 48:00portables have brought in portable showers, and you know, the relief effort to
- 48:07mitigate the damage over here is up and running and doing well thanks to the
- 48:12City of Charleston, a whole lot of great volunteers and the volunteer organizations over
- 48:15here on the West side. But we have to make sure that the information
- 48:20we put out there is correct and factual. And the part about vouchers from
- 48:23the d h HR, it was not factual. That's not that's not taking
- 48:28place, So people shouldn't be showing up at hotel saying they're going to get
- 48:31that. This is going to be covered well. One thing that I have
- 48:35heard that people do need to know is, I know people want to check
- 48:39their furnaces, they want to check their hot water tanks, they want to
- 48:42get in early with the plumber. Eighth BAC company whoever be replacing that Mountaineer
- 48:47Gas will be coming by to check people's appliances and property. And they should
- 48:54have a very very reputable plum company in tow and if repairs need to be
- 49:02made, they're going to be there to make the repairs. And if appliances
- 49:07need to be replaced, they're going to put the order in directly. Yeah,
- 49:09and we want to make sure that people realize that. Again, everybody's
- 49:13cold, and everybody wants to just flip it on, but you can't do
- 49:15that. You've got to let the fuck and Mountain their gas. Folks have
- 49:17to literally go to every house, every business. It's not like I told
- 49:22when mister Scaffa, you can't just flip a switch. I mean they literally
- 49:25have to go to each one. I just got a text here. We
- 49:28were hoping to have Margaret O'Neil on for the United Way. But again that's
- 49:30not gonna be able to happen because they're still in this meeting. But she
- 49:32did say that she wanted me to throw out this phone number three zero four
- 49:37three four zero thirty five hundred. That is a number for the United Way
- 49:40for if people need heaters, they need food, whatever, three zero four
- 49:45three four zero thirty five hundred, and that's from the United Way. Mike.
- 49:50That's that's thank Thank you very much, Margaret. That's information we need
- 49:52to put out there. Thank you very much. Tex says Western Gina.
- 49:55American Water apparently unable to deal with the routine maintenance but always premiums to their
- 50:00stockholders. Maybe privatization of a water service is not the best idea. Your
- 50:05thoughts, My thought is I agree. One. I've been very vocal about
- 50:08this since before I was in office, you know, ten years ago,
- 50:12when we had another issue with the water company when the chemicals were able to
- 50:19enter into the UH, the the one intake that serves one third of the
- 50:22state. That, yeah, maybe privatization of a water system was not a
- 50:30great idea, but it's very hard, UH to go from private back to
- 50:36public. It's It's difficult something that I've looked into for a long time,
- 50:40but I've always been a proponent of publicly owned water systems. They should be
- 50:47answering to the rate payers and the customers and people who need water rather than
- 50:53shareholders. I think the problem is when when more of the profits are going
- 50:59to shareholders and less going back into the infrastructure, then we continue to have
- 51:02problems. But they've outdo in five any line brought to you apart by Meek's
- 51:06realty group called three zero four four zero one one one zero one or visit
- 51:09Meeks dot US. Texas governor doesn't care about Charleston or Kanawa County. One
- 51:15bit a little unfair and that text, Mike, what do you think.
- 51:17I'm not gonna give comments. And I don't know what the what the governor's
- 51:22priorities are. I know that our priority right now is taking care of folks
- 51:27on the West side. I need to stay warm, need hot meals,
- 51:30and I just need to be taken care of. And like I said,
- 51:32I thank all the volunteer organizations and the City of Charleston who are stepping up
- 51:37and helping out over here. And as soon as I'm cleared to leave the
- 51:43house. I'll be out right out there with them. Yeah, I'm sure
- 51:45you will. I mean, I've known doubt that you'll be right out there
- 51:47with them. Yeah. And well, one thing I did. I did
- 51:51speak with some of my colleagues and the legislator who were all up and wheeling
- 51:54for the inn be I was supposed to be up there with them. Of
- 51:57course I'm not. I couldn't go because because of the you know, sick,
- 52:00and you want to get anybody else sick. Thirty seconds ahead, but
- 52:06I'm sending a letter today to the chairs of the Joint Committee on Transportation and
- 52:09Infrastructure. I think it's important for these utilities to come in and answer some
- 52:13questions. But since I only have thirty seconds, I'd like to put out
- 52:15there again. Most important information is eight four four two one six eight two
- 52:22eight six select the option two, and that is they have the city at
- 52:25Charles in the fire Department, in conjunction with the Red Cross, to check
- 52:30your smoke alarms and your fire detectors in your house to make sure everybody stays
- 52:35safe. We've got a lot of people using space heaters. We got to
- 52:37use them safely, all right, Mike, I appreciate it. Get Wilson,
- 52:38we'll talk against so Man. Thanks a lot. Follow the news of
