- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:07Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I'm b Blazarre and Lazarren. Hello, everybody nailed it. Joined
- 0:12Speaker 2: us always by our bar gas.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bars are the players
- 0:20Speaker 1: at the rock store round Josh Allen? That's special? Or
- 0:23Speaker 1: are they going to continue to get hit with regressions?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Okay, but here's the problem. What's regression to them?
- 0:28Speaker 1: What's regression to them? They went from thirteen wins last
- 0:32Speaker 1: year to twelve? Right, just call it eleven?
- 0:34Speaker 2: Okay, So they're still an eleven win team.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And you're willing to guarantee that two of those are
- 0:39Speaker 1: against the Patriots.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I didn't guarantee. You're saying guarantee. I never said guarantee.
- 0:43Speaker 2: The probability is they still split.
- 0:44Speaker 1: But you're actar building. You're talking about the Bills. It's fine,
- 0:48Speaker 1: there's nothing to see here. Return to your homes. The
- 0:51Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills are as good as ever. But with the
- 0:53Speaker 1: newing the Patriots, who just went to the super Bowl, well,
- 0:55Speaker 1: I have some real questions. They have some real questions
- 0:58Speaker 1: from this offseason that they need to answer. All I'm
- 1:00Speaker 1: saying it's one or the other. I think they both
- 1:02Speaker 1: have questions.
- 1:10Speaker 2: How many questions do the Patriots have? Now?
- 1:14Speaker 3: What?
- 1:15Speaker 2: What are they gonna say?
- 1:16Speaker 1: One for sure?
- 1:17Speaker 2: What are they gonna say? Now? Well, this is an
- 1:19Speaker 2: exciting day because it's June third. Typically, guys, it's behind
- 1:24Speaker 2: the glass to Alex bart Evan Lazar catch twenty two
- 1:26Speaker 2: with you for the next couple of hours. Typically, guys,
- 1:29Speaker 2: this is the dead doldrums of the off season, right,
- 1:32Speaker 2: this is when the NFL calendar is dead. There isn't
- 1:35Speaker 2: much going on. And now maybe the NFL, as it does,
- 1:40Speaker 2: just created a new news day which is gonna now
- 1:44Speaker 2: be the June first Trades because not only did A J.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Brown getting created the trade deadline in the middle of nowhere, Yeah,
- 1:50Speaker 1: just out of thin air, the NFL has now created
- 1:52Speaker 1: another news cycle and another trade deadline as it does,
- 1:56Speaker 1: so AJ Brown to the Patriots, that's the news that
- 1:59Speaker 1: we're gonnaocus on here today, obviously from a Patriots perspective.
- 2:03Speaker 2: The other trade, of course, in the NFL, another blockbuster
- 2:05Speaker 2: with Miles Garrett going to the Los Angeles Rams potentially
- 2:09Speaker 2: getting a little ahead of myself, but Rams Patriots in
- 2:13Speaker 2: LA Super.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Bowl week of this, this whole super Bowl build up today. Yeah,
- 2:18Speaker 1: the whole build up to this Super Bowl started on
- 2:20Speaker 1: June first, when both teams swung blocking.
- 2:23Speaker 2: You imagine, just for for me personally, you know how
- 2:27Speaker 2: much I love the city of Los Angeles to have
- 2:30Speaker 2: the Patriots in the Rams, two of my favorite teams
- 2:33Speaker 2: in the league, in my city of Los Angeles in
- 2:38Speaker 2: the Super Bowl.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I mean, come on, on your wife's birthday, that it
- 2:43Speaker 1: would be the Lazar Bowl.
- 2:44Speaker 2: That part of it, I'm not sure is really a
- 2:46Speaker 2: positive that that seems to be a negative in my household,
- 2:50Speaker 2: as you can imagine. But uh, we're gonna talk AJ Brown.
- 2:53Speaker 2: We're gonna talk O Tas. Alex and I were both
- 2:55Speaker 2: out there yesterday for the Patriots second open ota to
- 3:00Speaker 2: the media, so we got a lot to talk about, man.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I mean, there's a lot going on for a June third.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I want to start AJ Brown. Obviously, we haven't been
- 3:08Speaker 2: on the air since the trade, so there's a million
- 3:10Speaker 2: different ways that we can talk about AJ Brown, and
- 3:12Speaker 2: I want to talk about AJ Brown. There's the big
- 3:16Speaker 2: picture of the philosophy, which we're big on on this show,
- 3:20Speaker 2: a big philosophy team building show. Then there's his role
- 3:24Speaker 2: and what we kind of see projecting moving forward. Then
- 3:27Speaker 2: there's the domino effect of the wide receiver room, in
- 3:30Speaker 2: the hierarchy of the wide receiver room, and who makes
- 3:33Speaker 2: the roster on the back end of the roster the
- 3:36Speaker 2: future for a guy like Keishaan Booty, which we'll get to.
- 3:39Speaker 2: And then, of course, because it can't all be good news,
- 3:43Speaker 2: they have to slide in a little bit of a
- 3:45Speaker 2: bummer with Julian Hill going on injured reserve and Mike
- 3:49Speaker 2: Rabel yesterday confirming in his press conference that Julian Hill
- 3:52Speaker 2: has done for the year. So as great as it
- 3:56Speaker 2: Monday was at four to twenty or whatever it was
- 3:59Speaker 2: when they broke this news, obviously there's a little bit
- 4:02Speaker 2: of bad news there with the Julian Hill injury. The
- 4:05Speaker 2: place I wanted to start though, is I want to
- 4:07Speaker 2: go big and then I want to zoom in on
- 4:09Speaker 2: aj Brown Alex. I just don't know how you could
- 4:13Speaker 2: be disappointed or mad or quibble with a team that's
- 4:18Speaker 2: going for it, and it is that that is as
- 4:21Speaker 2: aggressive as the Patriots have been over the last let's
- 4:24Speaker 2: call it calendar year since they hired Mike Rabel, both
- 4:28Speaker 2: from hiring Mike Rabel and bringing back Josh McDaniels, to
- 4:32Speaker 2: the way that they handled both free agency periods and
- 4:34Speaker 2: now this trade. I absolutely love the aggressiveness. This is
- 4:39Speaker 2: the time to do it. This is you know, not
- 4:41Speaker 2: to go back and rehash or redelegate the mac Jones
- 4:45Speaker 2: era with the Patriots, but longtime listeners of this show,
- 4:50Speaker 2: from its root to its origin, we had a lot
- 4:54Speaker 2: of discussions on this show, Alex about how the Patriots
- 4:56Speaker 2: didn't do enough for mac Jones. And I'm not there's
- 4:59Speaker 2: not mac Jones. I'm getting to a bigger point here,
- 5:02Speaker 2: but we talked about multiple times the supporting cast around
- 5:07Speaker 2: mac Jones, the infrastructure, the coaching, all of those elements
- 5:12Speaker 2: of supporting and nurturing a young quarterback. Now, Drake May
- 5:17Speaker 2: is much more physically talented than mac Jones, and maybe
- 5:21Speaker 2: mac Jones's physical traits never would have gotten him to
- 5:25Speaker 2: the point where Drake May is heading or maybe is
- 5:28Speaker 2: already at. But the point is to me is when
- 5:32Speaker 2: you have a quarterback who's ascending on a rookie contract
- 5:36Speaker 2: in this window, we continued to beat the drum that
- 5:39Speaker 2: this was the time to go for it, This was
- 5:41Speaker 2: the time to go for it with Mac Jones. It
- 5:44Speaker 2: was DeVante Parker's, it was Juju Smith Schuster's, it was
- 5:48Speaker 2: different offensive coordinators. They didn't do it Ray and to
- 5:52Speaker 2: their credit, and they deserve credit, not only I really,
- 5:55Speaker 2: I would say all kind of levels of the organization,
- 5:59Speaker 2: you know, deserves credit for bankrolling this. Yeah, the general manager,
- 6:04Speaker 2: Elliott Wolf and the personnel side deserve credit for getting
- 6:08Speaker 2: all these deals done and making these trades happen. And
- 6:12Speaker 2: Mike Rabel deserves credit for I think, putting his finger
- 6:16Speaker 2: on the scale a little bit in some of these
- 6:18Speaker 2: directions with these players.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And I would say too making it an environment that
- 6:22Speaker 1: players wanted to come to, and making it a destiny
- 6:24Speaker 1: good point.
- 6:26Speaker 2: So all of those things, to me, I think everybody
- 6:29Speaker 2: deserves their flowers for all those different elements of this.
- 6:32Speaker 2: But what I just keep coming back to is two things. One,
- 6:37Speaker 2: this is how you build around a young quarterback. Yep,
- 6:39Speaker 2: this is going to make Drake May a star, like
- 6:43Speaker 2: he's already an MVP candidate. Last year and they went
- 6:48Speaker 2: out and I think they upgraded pretty much everywhere around him,
- 6:51Speaker 2: even more significantly around him. This is how you do it.
- 6:56Speaker 2: This is a blueprint. And Elliott Wolf was year when
- 7:00Speaker 2: they went through Mac Jones. He wasn't in this exact
- 7:03Speaker 2: role that he's in now as one of the primary
- 7:05Speaker 2: decision makers with the roster, but he was here, and
- 7:09Speaker 2: I have to imagine that he saw what happened with
- 7:12Speaker 2: Mac Jones and said, we're not going to repeat that
- 7:14Speaker 2: same mistake again, and they're doing it right this time.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I just think that you have to really appreciate the
- 7:22Speaker 2: aggressiveness to pursue talent, whether it's in free agency, whether
- 7:27Speaker 2: it's via trade, even in the draft when they traded
- 7:29Speaker 2: up twice in the first in the second round to
- 7:31Speaker 2: get the guys that they wanted.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Into get to have premium positions.
- 7:34Speaker 2: This is what you want to see from a team
- 7:38Speaker 2: that has a quarterback that for the time being, is
- 7:41Speaker 2: affordable and on a rookie contract. Now Ellie Wolf's given
- 7:45Speaker 2: some quotes I think it was to Jory Epstein of
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yahoo Sports that this probably isn't sustainable for them to
- 7:50Speaker 2: spend like this and for them to be this aggressive
- 7:53Speaker 2: in the veteran market, But at least for the time being,
- 7:55Speaker 2: with Drake May on that cost controlled contract, they have
- 7:59Speaker 2: the flexibility and the ability to do it. So I
- 8:03Speaker 2: think they deserve credit for what I think so far
- 8:07Speaker 2: at least is getting it right this time around for
- 8:10Speaker 2: their young quarterback. This is only going to make Drake
- 8:13Speaker 2: May better and then turn obviously that makes the team better.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and look, you mentioned it's not sustainable, which I
- 8:18Speaker 1: think is true. But if there's a time to do it,
- 8:22Speaker 1: it's the young quarterback on the rookie contract and try
- 8:27Speaker 1: to maximize that window. It might be the rarest spot
- 8:30Speaker 1: to being in football because even if you have a
- 8:32Speaker 1: great quarterback, right to capitalize on this. Okay, so you
- 8:36Speaker 1: I'm on a rookie contract, Odds are he's going to
- 8:37Speaker 1: be here another ten years after it, right, and then
- 8:40Speaker 1: you got to hit on the quarterback again. So this
- 8:41Speaker 1: is something that comes along every maybe every couple decades,
- 8:47Speaker 1: maybe every other decade if you're lucky, for like three
- 8:49Speaker 1: to four years, because it's not it doesn't even start
- 8:52Speaker 1: right away because the guy's got to prove he's worth
- 8:54Speaker 1: it first.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 1: So how many years have we talked about this window,
- 8:58Speaker 1: this rookie contract quarterback window. And they're in it and
- 9:01Speaker 1: they're capitalizing on it, and this probably isn't gonna be
- 9:03Speaker 1: the way it's always going to be under able, but
- 9:06Speaker 1: they have probably one more offseason of doing this and
- 9:08Speaker 1: you get, you know, if they can get two super
- 9:11Speaker 1: Bowl appearances in a Super Bowl win out of it
- 9:12Speaker 1: home run job done. So they're going for it. They're
- 9:16Speaker 1: absolutely going for it. Yeah, and they should be. I mean,
- 9:19Speaker 1: you look anywhere in the different odds, they're still like
- 9:21Speaker 1: the third or fourth favorite in the AFC. They're not
- 9:23Speaker 1: even the favorite to win the division. And I know
- 9:25Speaker 1: people have gotten annoyed how much we've pickering about that
- 9:27Speaker 1: in the last couple of weeks.
- 9:28Speaker 2: I will just say today, but I can't make any promises.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Should they be the AFC favorite after that trade? I
- 9:33Speaker 1: think so.
- 9:34Speaker 2: So that was something that I was thinking about.
- 9:36Speaker 1: They won the conference. I'll put it very simply. They
- 9:40Speaker 1: won the conference last year. Has anybody in the conference
- 9:44Speaker 1: done more to improve their team this year than them?
- 9:48Speaker 2: I guess. You know. The Broncos did trade for Jalen Waddle,
- 9:51Speaker 2: which is a big move.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Who's better player? I mean, Waddled's younger, who's a better player?
- 9:56Speaker 1: Right now we're talking about getting the Super Bowl browenty six.
- 10:00Speaker 1: But I think that you know, part of the para
- 10:02Speaker 1: and just sorry, just to clarify, Like obviously, like the
- 10:04Speaker 1: Raiders and Titans did a tone that doesn't the gap
- 10:06Speaker 1: was wider I'm talking about of the other contenders. Has
- 10:08Speaker 1: anybody done more to get better than.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I mean, the Chiefs had Kenneth Walker, which is a
- 10:12Speaker 2: nice move, but they haven't really done enough in.
- 10:14Speaker 1: My they also have a quarterback coming off tornl and
- 10:16Speaker 1: we're behind.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you know they were six and eight when Mahomes
- 10:19Speaker 2: got herd. I think you brought that up last week,
- 10:21Speaker 2: so you know they were behind Buffalo. We we don't
- 10:25Speaker 2: have to, you know, re argue that point, but you
- 10:28Speaker 2: can make arguments that they have maybe even declined, you know,
- 10:31Speaker 2: declined what especially on defense. I would say, I try
- 10:35Speaker 2: to take my Patriots footy pajamas off when I have
- 10:38Speaker 2: these types of conversation Patriots pajamas, well, you know, team employee.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I try to take my footy pajamas off when I
- 10:44Speaker 2: have these conversations about are they the best team in
- 10:47Speaker 2: the AFC? Are they super Bowl perennial super Bowl favorite?
- 10:51Speaker 2: Maybe that's strong because the Rams, I think right now,
- 10:53Speaker 2: are runaway super Bowl favorites at this point. Maybe it
- 10:55Speaker 2: was Seattle a little bit behind them. But I look
- 10:58Speaker 2: across the landscap the AFC and I really genuinely do
- 11:03Speaker 2: feel like they are the best roster in the conference. Now,
- 11:08Speaker 2: is there a chance that Drake May regresses a little
- 11:11Speaker 2: bit and that evens the playing field with a team
- 11:15Speaker 2: like Denver? Because I think the gap, as you know,
- 11:17Speaker 2: between bo Nicks and Drake May is substantial. It is significant.
- 11:20Speaker 2: So if you have the better quarterback, I'm going to
- 11:22Speaker 2: give the edge to the team. If we consider the
- 11:24Speaker 2: rest of the rosters, with the Broncos and the Patriots
- 11:26Speaker 2: kind of equal, I'm going to give the edge to
- 11:29Speaker 2: the quarterback. I know a lot of people are really
- 11:31Speaker 2: hot on Baltimore because they really like Jesse Minter and
- 11:34Speaker 2: they think that that's going to reinvigorate that program. We'll see,
- 11:38Speaker 2: But I think that that team also has some holes
- 11:41Speaker 2: in its roster in some places, at its aging, especially
- 11:44Speaker 2: at the tight end position, losing Isaiah likely and who
- 11:47Speaker 2: knows what Mark Andrews got left, Yeah, all that different
- 11:49Speaker 2: kind of stuff. So I think the Patriots are right there.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I think they have one of the best teams in
- 11:54Speaker 2: the AFC. I was on with your Favorite People in
- 11:59Speaker 2: Buffalo yesterday and Uh, they're they're they're worried. You can
- 12:04Speaker 2: hear it, you know, you can hear in the questions
- 12:05Speaker 2: that they're asking me. They're like, well, where's the weakness,
- 12:09Speaker 2: where's the flaw on this team? And I said, edge rusher,
- 12:13Speaker 2: I think is one spot that we're going to talk
- 12:15Speaker 2: about later that probably needs some retooling and upgrade. A
- 12:20Speaker 2: hit If Gay Bacchus isn't hit once he gets out there,
- 12:22Speaker 2: hopefully uh they hit on him as a pick. Depth
- 12:26Speaker 2: just on the defense, I would say like depth that linebacker,
- 12:31Speaker 2: depth that safety, maybe even depth a cornerback, even though
- 12:33Speaker 2: I'm not as hot on that as other people are. Obviously,
- 12:37Speaker 2: like any other team, if Christian Gonzalez were to get hurt,
- 12:42Speaker 2: if you know now that he's here, if A J.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Brown were to get hurt, if the quarterback obviously were
- 12:47Speaker 2: to get hurt, you know, those are things that couldn't
- 12:50Speaker 2: it's a house of injuries. But when you look at
- 12:53Speaker 2: it on paper, I I truly believe that they If
- 12:56Speaker 2: they're not the best team in the AFC, on paper,
- 12:58Speaker 2: they're close. They're really really close.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Is anybody defitting Nobody's definitively better than that.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Dude, that's a good way. Yeah, that's a good way putting.
- 13:05Speaker 1: And then we'll say, like, maybe there's one more move. Yeah,
- 13:08Speaker 1: I'm not ruling out a player for player swap for
- 13:10Speaker 1: Kashan Booty. If they can get an edge rusher, you know,
- 13:12Speaker 1: the Giants might be looking to move on from Kaveon Thibodeaux. Yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 1: I received.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I want to talk about kave On Thibdeau a little
- 13:18Speaker 2: bit later because I watched some of his film this morning,
- 13:21Speaker 2: just to just in case I don't have any I
- 13:22Speaker 2: don't know anything. I'm just I like to prep I
- 13:25Speaker 2: like to be ahead of it.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Tivot. You watch Thibodau's film, Yes, as you go back
- 13:29Speaker 1: what I'm saying.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I watched it from last year.
- 13:32Speaker 1: I'm curious what you think the difference was last year
- 13:34Speaker 1: when he felt fell off versus like the previously.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Oh I I yeah, No, I didn't go that far back.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I just watched his pressures from last year.
- 13:39Speaker 1: It's not even the draft and I'm doing Did you
- 13:41Speaker 1: watch the twenty four?
- 13:42Speaker 4: No?
- 13:42Speaker 2: I didn't, but that I mean we're getting off track
- 13:47Speaker 2: here a little bit. But just a guy at six
- 13:49Speaker 2: four two fifty five like really fits their their mold
- 13:53Speaker 2: you know, four to three and like that, he really
- 13:56Speaker 2: fits the the description of what they've been looking for
- 13:59Speaker 2: to a t at that position, you know, that kind
- 14:01Speaker 2: of kylevon Chase on Harold Landry type of build. Let's
- 14:05Speaker 2: get back on track though, to AJ Brown, Let's so
- 14:08Speaker 2: that's big picture, the aggressiveness, the weaponizing, arming, the offense
- 14:15Speaker 2: around Drake May. I don't know how you can have
- 14:18Speaker 2: any real major quibbles with that. I know there's a
- 14:20Speaker 2: lot of conversations about who won the trade, the Eagles
- 14:24Speaker 2: or the Patriots and giving up the first round pick.
- 14:27Speaker 2: I'm not losing much sleep over our twenty twenty eight
- 14:29Speaker 2: first round pick. That's just how I feel about it.
- 14:32Speaker 2: It's two years from now. You know, there are a
- 14:34Speaker 2: lot changes in the NFL in two years.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Personally, I am a little bit because what are we
- 14:38Speaker 1: gonna do that spring? If they don't it?
- 14:40Speaker 2: Somehow that's fair only that so you just mentioned the
- 14:42Speaker 2: only thing that I would have, like the smallest of
- 14:45Speaker 2: scene concerns about is that they have put a lot
- 14:49Speaker 2: of money into this roster. Yeah, is there a shoot
- 14:53Speaker 2: to drop where a player league is going that makes
- 14:58Speaker 2: a lot of money And I don't think Gonzalez is
- 15:00Speaker 2: the right player here because he's not making a lot
- 15:02Speaker 2: of money.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Yet, right, and it's a lot of short term money,
- 15:05Speaker 1: like some of these guys come off the books.
- 15:07Speaker 2: But took a pay cut that was reported over the
- 15:10Speaker 2: weekend right by Mike Reese. So that one, hopefully has
- 15:14Speaker 2: already been figured out. That was an expensive cap hit
- 15:17Speaker 2: that they were able to get down, an expensive player
- 15:20Speaker 2: that they were able to get to take a pay cut.
- 15:22Speaker 2: So hopefully that doesn't happen. Hopefully this doesn't come out
- 15:24Speaker 2: someplace else.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Right, Honestly, if there is one, and we're projecting way
- 15:28Speaker 1: ahead here, it might be Campbell. If Campbell ends up
- 15:31Speaker 1: being an average left tackle, well that's.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Well down the road. I was more thinking, you know,
- 15:35Speaker 2: when it was obviously a prime candidate, And yeah.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I assuming they get Gonzalez's extension done, Like, who
- 15:43Speaker 1: is it? Do they move like.
- 15:44Speaker 2: A Christian Barmore?
- 15:46Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's a position I kind of and Barmer
- 15:49Speaker 1: is a really good player, but that's a position I
- 15:51Speaker 1: trust them to handle.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, fair enough, all right, let's let's also sorry,
- 15:57Speaker 2: just to add to that, they have some guy from
- 15:58Speaker 2: the They got to bring a bunch of guys to
- 16:01Speaker 2: set the floor last year, right, veterans in free agency.
- 16:04Speaker 1: And when you talk about guys like Harold Landry, like
- 16:08Speaker 1: Robert Splane, like Carlton Davis, Morgan Moses, you could put
- 16:13Speaker 1: in this boat even some of the guys that were
- 16:15Speaker 1: here a Mony Stevenson. They have a bunch of pending
- 16:17Speaker 1: for agents next year. So my guess is it's not
- 16:21Speaker 1: shipping guys out. It's just you're trusting on your You're
- 16:23Speaker 1: trusting your team to draft through. Because a lot of
- 16:25Speaker 1: those guys I just named right, they drafted. I'd say,
- 16:28Speaker 1: besides Corner, they drafted players at those positions the last
- 16:32Speaker 1: two years. Hopefully step up and fit those roles. This
- 16:35Speaker 1: is draft and developed. You brought that first. And this
- 16:37Speaker 1: is the difference between what they did and what the
- 16:40Speaker 1: drowd Mayo Patriots did the year before. The Drowd Mayo
- 16:42Speaker 1: Patriots tried to draft and develop without having a floor set.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And you can't do that. You need a baseline. We
- 16:47Speaker 1: heard about all the Packers for years and years in
- 16:49Speaker 1: spending for agency, Okay, but that's because they'd been drafting
- 16:52Speaker 1: so well for so long. They had that baseline set.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Now that the baseline is set, you can move off
- 16:56Speaker 1: from some of those guys, and the plan, you'd think
- 16:59Speaker 1: is that you count on yourself the draft well, and
- 17:02Speaker 1: you're just gonna have this pipeline of guys coming up
- 17:04Speaker 1: and taking those spots.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, So let's talk about AJ Brown individually. Zoom
- 17:10Speaker 2: a little bit further in here on AJ Brown, I
- 17:12Speaker 2: want to discuss a couple of different things, first being
- 17:18Speaker 2: some of the things that you see in terms of
- 17:20Speaker 2: his production being slightly on the decline in certain areas. Obviously,
- 17:24Speaker 2: the counting stats last year just over a thousand yards,
- 17:29Speaker 2: twelve point nine yards per catch. All that was was down. Yeah,
- 17:32Speaker 2: all the nerds stuff that I like, the under the
- 17:34Speaker 2: hood stuff was also down. Yards per run, average, yards
- 17:39Speaker 2: after the catch, per reception, some of the next gen
- 17:42Speaker 2: you know, tracking data, all that different type of stuff.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I would signal that maybe he's not quite the you know,
- 17:51Speaker 2: down the field, field stretching receiver that he was earlier
- 17:56Speaker 2: on in his career. Elliott Wolf was quoted by Jory
- 17:59Speaker 2: Epstein saying that he's probably not as fast as he was.
- 18:04Speaker 2: With all that being said, his baseline of a thousand
- 18:07Speaker 2: yards is still there, which he clearly was. Yeah, last
- 18:12Speaker 2: year with Philadelphia. There's some ways that I think that
- 18:16Speaker 2: they can help him with scheme and with just different
- 18:19Speaker 2: things that they can do with him for him to
- 18:22Speaker 2: kind of age more gracefully than what he was doing
- 18:24Speaker 2: in Philadelphia. That we can get to here in a second.
- 18:27Speaker 2: But the easiest path forward, just with aj Brown in
- 18:30Speaker 2: a vacuum is just to take the all the routes
- 18:33Speaker 2: and targets that they were giving to Kaishaan Booty and
- 18:36Speaker 2: give those to give those to aj Brown, and then obviously,
- 18:39Speaker 2: since you know, we all kind of think he's a
- 18:41Speaker 2: better player, that probably increases, right, the targets are going
- 18:45Speaker 2: to increase, and hopefully the production will increase with that.
- 18:48Speaker 2: But on the surface, putting him outside obviously at the
- 18:53Speaker 2: X if we want to do the whole letters thing
- 18:55Speaker 2: and giving him a vertical rat tree like Kaishan Booties
- 18:58Speaker 2: is at least for the first step of integrating him
- 19:01Speaker 2: into the offense. I think that's where this is headed.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Now there's steps, you know, well beyond that that I
- 19:07Speaker 2: want to get to, But very first thing is learn
- 19:10Speaker 2: the outside receiver, learn the X royatree, and just basically
- 19:14Speaker 2: replace Kaishon Booty and hopefully upgrade that spot from kaishon Boody.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think that's the plan. He can
- 19:20Speaker 1: do a lot of the similar things, like you said,
- 19:21Speaker 1: And you know how much of the fall off stuff
- 19:27Speaker 1: is something with something to do. You think some of
- 19:29Speaker 1: that was mental. I think it was all an element
- 19:31Speaker 1: of him being disengaged. And from the reporting at the
- 19:34Speaker 1: time was that he wasn't upset with the number of targets.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I think he still had over one hundred targets, yeah,
- 19:39Speaker 1: or or something okay, so well over one hundred. Yeah,
- 19:42Speaker 1: it was the types of targets, And it makes sense
- 19:44Speaker 1: with as he's getting older, like he doesn't want to
- 19:46Speaker 1: take more hits. He doesn't want to run these slants
- 19:49Speaker 1: and drags and quickens, and he wants to go deep.
- 19:52Speaker 1: He wants to be a deep threat. And so if
- 19:54Speaker 1: that's what you have him doing here, you're gonna keep
- 19:56Speaker 1: them engaged. That's what he should be doing here. It's
- 19:57Speaker 1: what this offense dictates. You have Romeo Dobbs chain over,
- 20:00Speaker 1: you have Romeo Dobs and Julian Edelman role. So yeah,
- 20:04Speaker 1: I think that the key to one locking him is
- 20:06Speaker 1: to using him more vertically.
- 20:08Speaker 2: So I actually maybe we disagree on that slightly. So
- 20:12Speaker 2: I think that with the Eagles would ended up happening
- 20:14Speaker 2: with him, and how I think that they can sort of,
- 20:17Speaker 2: I said age gracefully. I think that's a great way
- 20:19Speaker 2: of putting it. I think Matt Harmon was the first
- 20:21Speaker 2: one I saw put it that way. The Eagles really
- 20:24Speaker 2: played him a lot, obviously on the outside. Eighty eight
- 20:27Speaker 2: percent of his snaps were at outside receiver, but it
- 20:30Speaker 2: was a lot of hitches goes and then you know
- 20:33Speaker 2: slants really like those three routes were made up something
- 20:37Speaker 2: like over sixty five percent of his targets, yeah, the
- 20:41Speaker 2: last year, so a lot of it was done also
- 20:44Speaker 2: on the outside, but also in isolation, so like a
- 20:47Speaker 2: lot of three by ones and stuff like that, where
- 20:49Speaker 2: he's the backside receiver and basically, you know, if he
- 20:52Speaker 2: gets manned to man or he gets singled on the
- 20:54Speaker 2: back side, the ball would funnel to his direction. But
- 20:57Speaker 2: with that, there's not that's not really helping out the
- 21:00Speaker 2: guy a whole lot with scheme, like, it's not really
- 21:04Speaker 2: devising creative ways from an ex's nose standpoint to get
- 21:08Speaker 2: him off the line of scrimmage, to get him separated,
- 21:10Speaker 2: to get him into the open field as a ball
- 21:12Speaker 2: carrier like we saw earlier on in his career. So
- 21:15Speaker 2: the question is if they aid him more with scheme
- 21:19Speaker 2: and with alignment and things like that. The number I
- 21:22Speaker 2: mentioned about his yards per yards per catch after the
- 21:26Speaker 2: catch average, the decrease that they've seen in that year
- 21:30Speaker 2: over year, how much of that was the nature of
- 21:33Speaker 2: the targets that he's getting, Like, think about it, when
- 21:36Speaker 2: he's getting down the field, targets on go balls at
- 21:39Speaker 2: catch points, stuff where he's just getting thrown fifty to
- 21:42Speaker 2: fifty balls, he's getting thrown hitches, and then the occasional
- 21:46Speaker 2: under slant route on the backside of the formation, like
- 21:49Speaker 2: you're not really creating space for him to run, Like
- 21:53Speaker 2: you're not gonna run with a jump ball, Like that's
- 21:55Speaker 2: not normally how those types of things work. When he
- 21:59Speaker 2: was in Tennessee, they targeted obviously. Tennessee was a heavy
- 22:03Speaker 2: under centered play action offense with Ryan Tannehill and Derrick
- 22:06Speaker 2: Henry AJ Brown on the outside. So looking at his
- 22:09Speaker 2: last year in Tennessee, he had twenty two catches for
- 22:13Speaker 2: over four hundred of his yards off of play action.
- 22:16Speaker 2: His last year in Philadelphia it was only eleven for
- 22:19Speaker 2: one hundred and eleven. So not only did it not
- 22:22Speaker 2: happen as frequently where he was getting targeted off of
- 22:24Speaker 2: play action, but he also his yards per catch went
- 22:27Speaker 2: down right and he was this like juggernaut efficient, just
- 22:33Speaker 2: really really disruptive, productive play action threat in Tennessee where
- 22:38Speaker 2: they would run him on inbreakers you know, slants, crossing routes, digs,
- 22:43Speaker 2: and they would just pull those linebackers up with play
- 22:46Speaker 2: action and they would just hit him on these you know,
- 22:48Speaker 2: five step slant glance routes right behind the linebackers, and
- 22:52Speaker 2: he's just got this whole runway to just kind of
- 22:54Speaker 2: catch and run with the football and take off. When
- 22:57Speaker 2: you look at some of these things, like the next
- 22:58Speaker 2: gen tracking data, the yards after the catch per reception,
- 23:02Speaker 2: like a lot of that is relative to the routes
- 23:05Speaker 2: that he's being asked to run. So if you he
- 23:08Speaker 2: saw more press coverage than any receiver in the league
- 23:10Speaker 2: last year, if you have a guy in your face
- 23:14Speaker 2: and you're getting pressed, like the adds of you hitting
- 23:16Speaker 2: like a really high top speed on that route is
- 23:19Speaker 2: not very high Versus if you're seeing off coverage and
- 23:23Speaker 2: you have a play action and you're running a slant
- 23:25Speaker 2: behind the linebackers and now you're catching it and you're
- 23:28Speaker 2: taking off over the middle of the field like that's
- 23:30Speaker 2: obviously going to get you up the top speed a
- 23:32Speaker 2: lot faster than getting off press, releasing, getting up the
- 23:36Speaker 2: sideline and getting up the top speed. So you look
- 23:40Speaker 2: at the play action stuff. I think that's step one.
- 23:43Speaker 2: The Patriots are going to be a lot more of
- 23:44Speaker 2: an under center team than Philadelphia was with Jalen Hurts.
- 23:47Speaker 2: They ran a spread offense, you know, kind of a
- 23:49Speaker 2: college style offense with RPOs and you know, quarterback runs
- 23:53Speaker 2: and stuff like that, where you know, there wasn't a
- 23:56Speaker 2: ton of scheme aided you know, targets for a j Brown.
- 24:01Speaker 2: So that's step one. Step two, I think is probably
- 24:04Speaker 2: using him a little bit more inside, and I thought,
- 24:07Speaker 2: just looking at the very limited sample size, but the
- 24:11Speaker 2: twelve percent of the routes that he ran inside last
- 24:13Speaker 2: year for Philly, he was highly productive on those routes,
- 24:16Speaker 2: and I think that if you increase those a little
- 24:19Speaker 2: bit more and you turn him into that prototypical power
- 24:22Speaker 2: slot a little bit more, it's not going to be
- 24:24Speaker 2: Stefan Diggs where he's doing it fifty one percent of
- 24:27Speaker 2: the time fifty two percent of the time, but maybe
- 24:29Speaker 2: instead of twelve percent of the time. It's closer to
- 24:31Speaker 2: what they were doing in Tennessee, where it was like
- 24:33Speaker 2: covering around thirty percent of the time. So now you know,
- 24:36Speaker 2: you whether it's Keishan Boudi who's still here, whether it's
- 24:40Speaker 2: Kyle Williams mccollins, like maybe one of those guys plays
- 24:44Speaker 2: on the outside some and you have Aj Brown and
- 24:47Speaker 2: Romeo Dobbs working inside the formation, which would be classic
- 24:51Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels right to put his best playmakers inside the formation.
- 24:55Speaker 2: So between the play action passes and increasing that in
- 24:59Speaker 2: an offense that goes on center a lot more than
- 25:01Speaker 2: Philadelphia's and using him more out of the slotter as
- 25:06Speaker 2: an inside receiver. I'm not saying that he's going to
- 25:09Speaker 2: go back to being a fifteen hundred yard guy. I
- 25:11Speaker 2: don't know if that guy is still quite in there
- 25:14Speaker 2: as it was in his early Philly days like twenty
- 25:17Speaker 2: twenty two, twenty twenty three Philly. But does that take
- 25:20Speaker 2: him from a thousand yard receiver to a twelve hundred
- 25:23Speaker 2: yard receiver or you know, a comfortable one thousand yard receiver.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Does that increase his yards after the catch. Does that
- 25:32Speaker 2: go back up to what it was earlier on in
- 25:34Speaker 2: his career. If those things can happen just by Josh McDaniels,
- 25:37Speaker 2: frankly just being a better offensive coordinator than Kevin Bittulo,
- 25:41Speaker 2: then I have a good feeling that he's production is
- 25:43Speaker 2: going to be just fine. And that doesn't even mention
- 25:46Speaker 2: that I think Drake may is a better quarterback than
- 25:48Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts, Right, So all these things add up just.
- 25:51Speaker 1: In a better situation. It's a better situation.
- 25:53Speaker 2: So hopefully all those things come to fruition and who knows,
- 25:57Speaker 2: like maybe he could be back to being one of
- 26:00Speaker 2: the most productive receivers in the league just with a
- 26:02Speaker 2: little bit of help from Josh McDaniels. Worst case scenarios
- 26:06Speaker 2: seventy eight for a thousand yards and seven touchdowns. Also
- 26:09Speaker 2: isn't a bad season either, which is what he had
- 26:11Speaker 2: last year in Philly.
- 26:12Speaker 1: I mean, I think anything less than a thousand yards
- 26:14Speaker 1: would be a disappointment, but I don't I don't think
- 26:16Speaker 1: he's gonna be a volume guy. I think it's going
- 26:17Speaker 1: to be a you know, I look at like seventy
- 26:19Speaker 1: to eighty catches, eleven hundred yards I think is his
- 26:22Speaker 1: where you want him.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Yeah, so we'll see. Like yesterday, obviously he didn't do
- 26:26Speaker 2: very much. You hope that. One of the things that
- 26:30Speaker 2: I think really stands out to me though with aj
- 26:32Speaker 2: Brown is just when he gets rolling off the line
- 26:36Speaker 2: of scrimmage and he's running at a defender. He has
- 26:38Speaker 2: a great body control to like break down and efficiency
- 26:42Speaker 2: run an incut like where it's a deep in or
- 26:45Speaker 2: a slant, and he gets those defenders, He gets up
- 26:48Speaker 2: on the toes, he gets those defenders out of their stance,
- 26:50Speaker 2: and then he can just kind of smoothly break in
- 26:53Speaker 2: and out off at the top of the route, which
- 26:55Speaker 2: makes him really difficult to cover. I just didn't see
- 26:57Speaker 2: a whole lot of that on his Philly tape from
- 26:59Speaker 2: last year and see them using him in that way.
- 27:01Speaker 2: So the play action routes in the slot routes I
- 27:04Speaker 2: think will come in time. Obviously. The step one note
- 27:07Speaker 2: is trying to see him increase his understanding and his
- 27:10Speaker 2: grasp of the offense from the outside receiver role. The
- 27:14Speaker 2: other thing I wanted to talk about was just the
- 27:17Speaker 2: the following here on the rest of the wide receiver room.
- 27:20Speaker 2: We're talking a lot about him replacing Kaishon Boody's role
- 27:24Speaker 2: or taking over Kaishan Boody's role, which obviously has a
- 27:27Speaker 2: trickle down effect on Kaishon Booty. But what do you think,
- 27:31Speaker 2: how do you think this kind of all shakes out
- 27:33Speaker 2: behind Dobbs and Brown because we know those two guys
- 27:35Speaker 2: are going to be regulars.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I think what's cool is assuming they trade Kishon Booty,
- 27:40Speaker 1: which it feels more and more like like from what
- 27:43Speaker 1: you see reported is going to be the case. So
- 27:45Speaker 1: your next guys up are Matt Hollins, Kyle Williams, and
- 27:51Speaker 1: then maybe Pop Douglas and Defton Chism. Maybe it comes
- 27:54Speaker 1: down to one of them making the team. I think
- 27:56Speaker 1: those guys are different. I think they get pigeonholed into
- 27:58Speaker 1: being redundant a little too much because they're both on
- 28:00Speaker 1: the shorter side. But they could end up competing for
- 28:02Speaker 1: one role. That being said, like between those three or four,
- 28:07Speaker 1: those are all very different players. So maccollins is probably
- 28:10Speaker 1: ultimately your third guy. Drake Maylegs throwing to him. They
- 28:13Speaker 1: seem to want to be big at wide receiver. Certainly,
- 28:15Speaker 1: you know if they get in a four minute they're
- 28:17Speaker 1: trying to run the balls. Mcallins. Maccollins might even be
- 28:19Speaker 1: the guy in twelve over Romeo Dobbs late in games
- 28:21Speaker 1: when they're trying to run the clock out, But between
- 28:24Speaker 1: mccollins Ky Williams than those other two smaller guys like
- 28:27Speaker 1: you can kind of pick and choose depending on the matchup,
- 28:30Speaker 1: depending on the situation, depending on the week. You can
- 28:33Speaker 1: hunt different matchups and you can hunt different assignments depending
- 28:37Speaker 1: on what you're trying to do. So and that's something
- 28:40Speaker 1: that Josh McDaniels is. One of Josh McDaniels' best abilities
- 28:43Speaker 1: as a coordinator is to change looks, call the same
- 28:47Speaker 1: play with different personnel and make it look different, make
- 28:49Speaker 1: the defense defend it differently. So I think it's going
- 28:51Speaker 1: to be I think it's a good spot. If you're
- 28:54Speaker 1: how long we talked about having the Patriots, Well, they
- 28:57Speaker 1: have a bunch of good, complimentary guys, they just don't
- 28:58Speaker 1: have the number one. They have the number one, and
- 29:01Speaker 1: now those complimentary guys I think should be in a
- 29:03Speaker 1: spot to shine, and it's gonna be Josh McDaniels putting
- 29:05Speaker 1: them in a position to succeed. You play a team
- 29:07Speaker 1: with a bunch of smaller corners. Maybe that's a mac
- 29:10Speaker 1: Hollins week. You play a team with that's a little
- 29:12Speaker 1: more stiff on defense that doesn't want to be in
- 29:14Speaker 1: that three corner set. Well, now maybe you go to
- 29:16Speaker 1: Pop Douglas or you play man heavy team. Now you
- 29:19Speaker 1: go to Pop Douglas, or you go to Fton Chisholm.
- 29:21Speaker 1: You play a team where you're gonna need some big plays,
- 29:23Speaker 1: or you play a team where you can get a
- 29:24Speaker 1: match up on a slower corner, an injured corner. Now
- 29:27Speaker 1: that's a Kaya Williams week, or it's a ka Kailea
- 29:29Speaker 1: Williams is gonna be a little more involved in that
- 29:30Speaker 1: game plan or something like that. So I think it's
- 29:33Speaker 1: great that their rooms diversified between behind those top two
- 29:36Speaker 1: and it's gonna allow them to do a bunch of
- 29:38Speaker 1: different things depending on the opponent.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, So that was the other place I wanted
- 29:41Speaker 2: to go with it, other than the depth triters. Just
- 29:43Speaker 2: you know, this is this type of show. So that's
- 29:45Speaker 2: what I'm saying, just getting into the weeds of how
- 29:49Speaker 2: defenses are now gonna defend the Patriots.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Is there a depth chart between those guys or is
- 29:53Speaker 1: it gonna be more matchup base.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Yeah. I think that's a good way of looking at it. Obviously,
- 29:57Speaker 2: they have seven guys for maybe six spots if you
- 30:00Speaker 2: want to include e Fton Chisholm, which I in my
- 30:03Speaker 2: developing takes on OTAs that he's on that, so we'll
- 30:06Speaker 2: get to play that in a little bit. But the
- 30:10Speaker 2: the biggest thing to me is looking at as much
- 30:14Speaker 2: as I like AJ Brown and Romeo Dobbs, and I'm
- 30:16Speaker 2: not trying to poo poo anything about it, they're a
- 30:19Speaker 2: little slow. If it's Romeo Dobs, AJ Brown, mccollins, Hunter
- 30:24Speaker 2: Henry as your primary group of pass catchers, there's a
- 30:28Speaker 2: lot to like about it because there's a lot of size, power,
- 30:32Speaker 2: contested catchability. I think all those things are really good
- 30:37Speaker 2: fits with Drake May down the field, like go ball
- 30:40Speaker 2: winning obviously, especially with AJ Brown involved. All that stuff
- 30:44Speaker 2: is good with Drake May and Romeo Dobs should be
- 30:46Speaker 2: a good fit in the offense and all that different
- 30:49Speaker 2: types of stuff. The guys that I think are kind
- 30:51Speaker 2: of X factors and all of this are the guys
- 30:53Speaker 2: that can bring an infusion of speed, which are Kyle
- 30:56Speaker 2: Williams and Pop Douglas. So Kyle Williams and Pop Douglas
- 30:59Speaker 2: a little bit different in how they bring speed. I
- 31:02Speaker 2: think Kyle Williams more of an outside guide. Pop obviously
- 31:05Speaker 2: more of like a speed slot, you know, field stretching slot.
- 31:08Speaker 2: But at the same time, there are three receiver sets.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Take off the situation in the game for a second,
- 31:16Speaker 2: and whether it's their up or trailing or whatever, let's
- 31:18Speaker 2: just call it a passing situation. In a passing situation,
- 31:22Speaker 2: they're just a little bit more dynamic to me if
- 31:25Speaker 2: Pop or Kyle Williams is that third receiver instead of
- 31:28Speaker 2: even Booty if he's still here, Matt Collins, because it
- 31:32Speaker 2: brings a different dimension whether it's an inside speed guy
- 31:35Speaker 2: or it's an outside speed guy. And like I just
- 31:37Speaker 2: talked about with kicking Brown maybe more inside than he
- 31:41Speaker 2: did in Philadelphia, is Kyle Williams taking that next step
- 31:46Speaker 2: possible so that he can play the outside spot and
- 31:50Speaker 2: allow Josh McDaniels to move aj Brown around like a
- 31:54Speaker 2: chess piece. Because that's that's really when the McDaniels offense
- 31:57Speaker 2: is cooking to me, is when he has the freedom
- 32:01Speaker 2: to just kind of move everybody around and hunt matchups.
- 32:03Speaker 2: And a lot of the time the way the structure
- 32:05Speaker 2: of the offense in the passing game and this offense works,
- 32:08Speaker 2: those matchups end up being inside. So can they find
- 32:12Speaker 2: ways to do that? And that really puts a lot
- 32:15Speaker 2: of onus, in my opinion, on Kyle Williams, and that
- 32:17Speaker 2: Kyle Williams taking that next step. And it's not lost
- 32:21Speaker 2: on me that Mike Rabels brought up Kyle Williams unprompted,
- 32:23Speaker 2: like multiple times in his last two press conferences. He
- 32:27Speaker 2: did it again yesterday. He was asked a question about,
- 32:30Speaker 2: you know, guys in the wide receiver room and whatever,
- 32:33Speaker 2: and he just unprompted, brought up Kyle Williams. So I
- 32:35Speaker 2: think they're trying to push Kyle Williams because I think
- 32:37Speaker 2: they know they need a little bit of speed. You know,
- 32:39Speaker 2: Aj Brown might not be as fast as he once was.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Romeo Dobbs is not considered like a third level burner,
- 32:45Speaker 2: like that's not his game either, so that they could
- 32:48Speaker 2: add a little bit more speed there. You mentioned the
- 32:50Speaker 2: schematic stuff. That's the most fascinating part to me because
- 32:55Speaker 2: two years ago, last year, the Eagles offense obviously tapered
- 32:58Speaker 2: off and everybody kind of had a down year two
- 33:00Speaker 2: years ago. Alex uh who was your MVP of the
- 33:04Speaker 2: league two years ago? Let me see if you get
- 33:06Speaker 2: this right, Lamar, No, like you're to take the quarterback
- 33:09Speaker 2: out of it, like Alos two years ago? Suon Barkley
- 33:13Speaker 2: right right, right? Two thousand yard rusher, Yeah, Saquon Barkley.
- 33:17Speaker 2: A big reason why was because Saquon Barkley's really good. Yeah.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Another big reason why is because they had a great
- 33:22Speaker 2: offensive line. But a lot of the issues that are
- 33:26Speaker 2: the issues that they presented the defenses were that they
- 33:29Speaker 2: had Prime aj Brown and DeVante Smith on the outside,
- 33:33Speaker 2: and when you have those matchups on the outside, they
- 33:35Speaker 2: were just seeing a whole lot of two high safety
- 33:37Speaker 2: coverages and it's just lighting the box and it's giving
- 33:41Speaker 2: the running game all sorts of room into feast inside.
- 33:43Speaker 2: So teams had to make a decision, are we going
- 33:46Speaker 2: to play one on one on the outside against their
- 33:48Speaker 2: receivers to load the box against Saquon, or are we
- 33:51Speaker 2: going to empty the box and put the safeties over
- 33:54Speaker 2: the top of the receivers And now we have to
- 33:57Speaker 2: worry about stopping to run. And there really wasn't a
- 33:59Speaker 2: great an answer to that. Problem. That's why the Eagles
- 34:01Speaker 2: went on to win the Super Bowl and had a
- 34:04Speaker 2: one of the best seasons running back seasons of all
- 34:06Speaker 2: time for Sakuon Barkley. I don't know if the Patriots
- 34:09Speaker 2: are quite that yet. Their offensive lines attached to this tea.
- 34:13Speaker 1: You put out a tweet the other day something about
- 34:15Speaker 1: too high, very single high or whatever, and you were
- 34:17Speaker 1: talking about wide receiver usage and Drake May against those looks,
- 34:21Speaker 1: and I think I texted you back, all I see
- 34:22Speaker 1: is run the damn ball. Yeah, And I said this
- 34:24Speaker 1: when they made the trade, and it's because it's this show.
- 34:27Speaker 1: I know, this is where nobody's mind goes when you
- 34:30Speaker 1: trade for a all pro, superstar wide receiver. But in
- 34:35Speaker 1: keeping in line with everything else they've done this offseason
- 34:38Speaker 1: from free agency to the draft, this is, among other things,
- 34:43Speaker 1: this helps the run game. Yeah, it's going to make
- 34:45Speaker 1: it easier for them to run the ball, which they
- 34:46Speaker 1: became two one dimensional at the end of the year.
- 34:48Speaker 2: So the numbers behind this, I tweeted these out in
- 34:52Speaker 2: the article of the film breakdown that I wrote about
- 34:54Speaker 2: AJ Brown. In the regular season, the Patriots only saw
- 34:58Speaker 2: two high safety coverages, so split safeties too. Over the
- 35:02Speaker 2: top like a Cover two, a quarters, cover six. They
- 35:05Speaker 2: only saw that thirty nine percent of the time. In
- 35:08Speaker 2: the playoffs, when they played better defenses and they played
- 35:11Speaker 2: defenses that were game planning specifically that week to beat
- 35:15Speaker 2: Drake May, that number increased to fifty one percent, which
- 35:19Speaker 2: is a very high percentage. It was would have been
- 35:22Speaker 2: the highest percentage in the league if guy had held
- 35:24Speaker 2: for an entire season. So in the playoffs, they started
- 35:28Speaker 2: playing a lot more too deep safeties. In the playoffs,
- 35:31Speaker 2: they also started to play a lot more Cover six,
- 35:33Speaker 2: which is what Seattle used in the Super Bowl. That's
- 35:36Speaker 2: a whole nother web that we can kind of get
- 35:38Speaker 2: into as well in terms of what it's specifically that
- 35:41Speaker 2: coverage does. But all they're trying to do to put
- 35:44Speaker 2: it in you know, football partlands, they're trying to cloud
- 35:47Speaker 2: the field, which means they're trying to put those two
- 35:48Speaker 2: safeties over the top because they're trying to take Drake
- 35:51Speaker 2: May's deep ball away. They don't want him to throw
- 35:54Speaker 2: the deep ball down the field. So by putting the
- 35:56Speaker 2: safeties over the top of the outside receivers, now you
- 35:59Speaker 2: make it an inside game, a run game, and you
- 36:01Speaker 2: take away his superpower of throwing the deep ball. The
- 36:05Speaker 2: Eagles over the last two years, you want to well,
- 36:07Speaker 2: I just gave it away. The Eagles over the last
- 36:09Speaker 2: two years saw more too high safeties than about any
- 36:11Speaker 2: other offense in the league, especially in twenty twenty four
- 36:14Speaker 2: when they won the Super Bowl because of AJ Brown
- 36:17Speaker 2: and a little bit because of Davonte Smith too. So
- 36:19Speaker 2: if the Patriots start to see more of those two
- 36:21Speaker 2: high safety shells as a result of having a guy
- 36:24Speaker 2: like AJ Brown on the outside, what does that do?
- 36:27Speaker 2: I think it does two primary things. The run game
- 36:29Speaker 2: is a big one, and I want to get to
- 36:31Speaker 2: a point about that. The other thing is is that
- 36:33Speaker 2: the inside receiver should have a lot more room to
- 36:35Speaker 2: operate because there's one less body right in that area
- 36:38Speaker 2: of the field. So a guy like Romeo Dobbs, a
- 36:41Speaker 2: guy like Hunter Henry, a guy like Efton Chisholm or
- 36:44Speaker 2: Pop Douglas, whoever emerges as that speed slot or second
- 36:48Speaker 2: slot receiver behind Romeo Dobbs, those guys should all be
- 36:52Speaker 2: able to eat in the middle. And I remember when
- 36:54Speaker 2: they used to play too high against Brady, and they
- 36:56Speaker 2: didn't do it as frequently once Moss left obviously, but
- 37:00Speaker 2: there were spurts of it where teams would do it
- 37:03Speaker 2: and they would just put you know, Edelman, Amandola, Gronk,
- 37:07Speaker 2: Hernandez like those guys would just play in the middle.
- 37:10Speaker 2: And that linebacker, that Mike linebacker was in hell like
- 37:13Speaker 2: that because you can't cover a guy that is as
- 37:16Speaker 2: quick and as dynamic of a receiver as aj Brown
- 37:18Speaker 2: as a two hundred and forty five pound linebacker, you
- 37:20Speaker 2: have no chance, no, So that was the way that
- 37:23Speaker 2: they sort of were able to beat it. The other
- 37:26Speaker 2: thing to you know, bring a full circle with the
- 37:27Speaker 2: run game. I'm really excited to see they signed a
- 37:32Speaker 2: pretty good fullback that I'm pretty excited about with Reggie Gilliam.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Now this takes a minor hit with Julian Hill, which
- 37:38Speaker 2: bums me out because I thought that this would really
- 37:40Speaker 2: be like the true zag would be. Okay, you're worried
- 37:45Speaker 2: about the deep passing game. You're gonna play with the
- 37:47Speaker 2: two safeties over the top of the defense. We're gonna
- 37:49Speaker 2: put twelve personnel, twenty two personnel out in the field.
- 37:52Speaker 2: We're gonna have a full back, we're gonna have multiple
- 37:54Speaker 2: tight ends, and we're just gonna turn around and hand
- 37:57Speaker 2: the ball off Tormandre Stevenson and Trevion Henderson. We're gonna
- 38:00Speaker 2: ram it down your throats and that that's usually the
- 38:03Speaker 2: zig to the zag, right, Like that's usually clastic.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Josh McDaniels.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Yeah, so all these different things. Though Philly's upticking two
- 38:11Speaker 2: high safety shells with aj Brown, the Patriots uptick a
- 38:14Speaker 2: two high safety shells in the playoffs, I would assume
- 38:16Speaker 2: they're gonna see a lot of two high safeties in
- 38:18Speaker 2: the regular season. That that spells to me a huge
- 38:21Speaker 2: season for the running game, and it should, especially with
- 38:24Speaker 2: the improvements that they've made on the offensive line and
- 38:26Speaker 2: with gilliam Pour went out for Julian Hill. That comes
- 38:29Speaker 2: to me out.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Sky tough loss. But like you said, you know, how
- 38:33Speaker 1: much can they develop Raardan as a blocker here before
- 38:36Speaker 1: the start of the season, Because if he can develop
- 38:38Speaker 1: as a blocker, TV turned off again.
- 38:42Speaker 2: If that TV is just flickering for like two weeks.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Now, If if Rearden develops as a blocker, like all right, now,
- 38:49Speaker 1: you're good to go for twelve personnel again. If not,
- 38:51Speaker 1: it opens the door for CJ. Dupree or Tanner Arkin
- 38:54Speaker 1: because they are still gonna want that blocking tight end
- 38:56Speaker 1: on the they're gonna keep three, like there is gonna
- 38:58Speaker 1: be another spot. Felt like it was gonna be Henry
- 39:02Speaker 1: as the primary guy. Hill is the blocker and Reardon
- 39:05Speaker 1: is kind of the tweener developmental player. Now it's Henry
- 39:09Speaker 1: is the one. Rearden's your second receiving tight end. But
- 39:14Speaker 1: you're gonna have like a Dwayne You're gonna have Dwayne
- 39:16Speaker 1: Allen somebody like that, and that again is probably Dupre
- 39:19Speaker 1: or Arkin. Maybe Jack Westover gets back in the mix
- 39:22Speaker 1: after playing football fullback last year. I'll give you one
- 39:25Speaker 1: more Evan that kind of interests me. They signed Reggie Gilliam,
- 39:30Speaker 1: he's gonna be the fullback, right, Yes, if you're Brock Lampy,
- 39:32Speaker 1: do you go to the coaches and say, let me
- 39:34Speaker 1: play tight end just to try to get a roster spot.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Maybe he's just so burly, like he just reminds me
- 39:40Speaker 2: so much more of like a James Devil.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Yeah. No, he's six foot two fifteen, Yeah.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Like he's a he's a squad rack kind of guy.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Like I just can't imagine. He doesn't have the body
- 39:48Speaker 2: type for it, like Westover doesn't have the body type
- 39:51Speaker 2: for it because he's too slight, like it's the opposite,
- 39:53Speaker 2: whereas brock Westover, I mean at full back, brock Lampy
- 39:57Speaker 2: to me, doesn't have like one of the things that
- 39:59Speaker 2: stood out to me, and this is in my developing
- 40:01Speaker 2: takes about OTAs, It's like Reggie Gilliams got like a
- 40:04Speaker 2: really nice like stride to him, Like he's got the
- 40:07Speaker 2: ability to kind of open his strides up and run
- 40:10Speaker 2: pretty well. I don't know if brock Lampy has that
- 40:13Speaker 2: ability to run routes at that size.
- 40:16Speaker 1: I mean, I think the idea would be purely as
- 40:19Speaker 1: like a Dwayne Allen type.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Sure, so whether it's arkin, whether it's dupre, whether it's
- 40:24Speaker 2: something like that Westover and brock Lampy translating back over
- 40:27Speaker 2: to more natural tight ends. I did take a quick
- 40:30Speaker 2: peek at the free agent tight ends. I don't hate
- 40:33Speaker 2: the idea of bringing in a veteran like this was
- 40:36Speaker 2: Julian Hill was a guy you were going to play
- 40:38Speaker 2: probably thirty five to forty of his naps, Like that's
- 40:40Speaker 2: a pretty substantial role in your offense. And I don't
- 40:43Speaker 2: really feel like Eli reridan, even if he pans out
- 40:46Speaker 2: and is a good pro. I don't really feel like
- 40:49Speaker 2: he fits the mold of what they were trying to
- 40:52Speaker 2: do with Julian Hill. So old pal Farah Brown still
- 40:57Speaker 2: out there. He's kind of more of like an inline
- 40:59Speaker 2: blocking tight end. John X Smith still out there too,
- 41:01Speaker 2: if you want to talk about old friends. He's not
- 41:03Speaker 2: signed right now, I will Disley. I don't know what
- 41:06Speaker 2: his injury situation is. I know he's had a lot
- 41:08Speaker 2: of injuries.
- 41:08Speaker 1: Can I get weird and say Mercedes Lewis.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Mercedes Lewis has got to be like technically right, he's
- 41:14Speaker 2: well past forty. Yeah, but he's technically a free agent,
- 41:17Speaker 2: like I wouldn't rule that out either.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Not a Stades Lewis, Yeah, he's forty two.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Not an expensive one, like we're not talking about you know,
- 41:26Speaker 2: we talked about Kaevon Thibodeaux earlier in the show. That's
- 41:28Speaker 2: not I'm not saying to do something like that, but
- 41:31Speaker 2: another veteran body that's played some NFL football probably would
- 41:34Speaker 2: go a long way. That That was all I had
- 41:37Speaker 2: really on the AJ Brown thing forty minutes into the show.
- 41:39Speaker 2: So the other question here from Floyd in Michigan that
- 41:44Speaker 2: I don't want it to make it sound like we're
- 41:46Speaker 2: kind of going around the compensation here, so we can
- 41:50Speaker 2: answer this question. I am a fan of Catch twenty two,
- 41:52Speaker 2: but please talk about the high price for AJ Brown.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Even Mike reesaid that it was a high price with
- 41:57Speaker 2: the Patriots being the only known suitor caused the overpay.
- 42:01Speaker 2: So I'm a little bit weary of calling it an
- 42:05Speaker 2: overpay because it's a twenty twenty eight first round pick.
- 42:09Speaker 2: So I if they've given up a twenty twenty seven
- 42:11Speaker 2: first round pick, I would have felt like it was
- 42:13Speaker 2: a little bit of an over.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Let's start here. I want to start a second part
- 42:16Speaker 1: of that first, the Patriots being the only suitor, this
- 42:19Speaker 1: was a very unique trade in that it took We
- 42:25Speaker 1: knew it was gonna happened months ago, but it didn't happen, right.
- 42:29Speaker 1: I don't think the Patriots were literally the only team
- 42:31Speaker 1: that called the Eagles about AJ Brown. That would we
- 42:34Speaker 1: know that we heard Rams are in, we heard I
- 42:37Speaker 1: think they said the Bills checked in before they traded
- 42:39Speaker 1: for uh, what's his name?
- 42:43Speaker 2: The Bill?
- 42:43Speaker 1: DJ DJ Moore, Thank you, I can't remember his name now.
- 42:45Speaker 1: He blew up the whole freaking off season. Yeah, I
- 42:51Speaker 1: don't think the Patriots were the only suitor from day one.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's how I look at it as well.
- 42:58Speaker 1: The Patriots put up because there were If the Bills
- 43:00Speaker 1: are gonna give up a second round pick for DJ Moore,
- 43:03Speaker 1: is it safe to assume they would have given up
- 43:04Speaker 1: a second round pick for AJ Brown? Yes?
- 43:06Speaker 4: Or no?
- 43:07Speaker 2: I would think so.
- 43:08Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know exactly DJ Moore's contract and all,
- 43:13Speaker 2: like all the different particulars of DJ Moore, but but
- 43:16Speaker 2: I would have.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Think and a second round pick for AJ Brown is
- 43:19Speaker 1: not unreasonable.
- 43:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:20Speaker 1: So what I'm guessing happened is a bunch of teams
- 43:21Speaker 1: put second round picks on the table.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Yep.
- 43:24Speaker 1: The Patriots then put on a first. Nobody else was
- 43:27Speaker 1: putting on a first, so all the other teams stopped
- 43:29Speaker 1: calling because they knew they were outbid. And then you
- 43:33Speaker 1: had this three month stretch where nothing happened. So sure,
- 43:38Speaker 1: in those three months there weren't any other suitors, but
- 43:41Speaker 1: that's not when the trade was being negotiated. The trade
- 43:44Speaker 1: was negotiated months ago. So I think to say the
- 43:46Speaker 1: Patriots were the only team in on AJ Brown, I
- 43:51Speaker 1: guess in a sense is correct. At the end, but
- 43:56Speaker 1: it's because everybody else pulled out because the Patriots will
- 43:59Speaker 1: to offer more and to get back to the other.
- 44:01Speaker 2: Point, that's exactly how I look at right.
- 44:03Speaker 1: So did the Patriots offer more than everybody else? Yes,
- 44:06Speaker 1: that's how you make a trade the player? Is it right?
- 44:09Speaker 1: They and they got the player? Is it an overpay?
- 44:11Speaker 1: If you were to punch into your little spreadsheet, there
- 44:13Speaker 1: an EPA or DVOA or approximate value or football war?
- 44:18Speaker 1: Hopefully that never becomes a thing. Is it a thing?
- 44:21Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 44:22Speaker 1: Football war is a thing. Great, we're losing the battle.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Whatever you punch in, You lost the war is what? No,
- 44:28Speaker 1: I'm still fighting a good fight whatever you punch in.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Did the Patriots probably give up more of that than
- 44:34Speaker 1: they got? Yeah? Probably, I don't think by an extreme amount,
- 44:38Speaker 1: but they probably gave up more value than they got.
- 44:41Speaker 1: There's two things to that. One.
- 44:45Speaker 2: What was the alternative going in with Romeo Dobbs? Is
- 44:49Speaker 2: your number one receiver?
- 44:50Speaker 1: Right at a certain point we talked about this. Once
- 44:53Speaker 1: they cut Digs, you could not go into this season
- 44:57Speaker 1: with less than a wide receiver than he had last
- 44:59Speaker 1: years on a acceptable would have been organizational malpractice. Yeah,
- 45:03Speaker 1: and you look at you highlighted off top of the
- 45:05Speaker 1: show what that is going to do for Drake May
- 45:08Speaker 1: and the long term investment in that. So it's not
- 45:13Speaker 1: it's not just that, Okay, they maybe gave up a
- 45:15Speaker 1: little more value. They made the team better, which is
- 45:18Speaker 1: what's important. And we've talked when you talk about team
- 45:20Speaker 1: building in the NFL, there's you hear people talk about
- 45:23Speaker 1: the one year, the three year, and the five year outlook,
- 45:26Speaker 1: and every decision is basically made through those three windows.
- 45:30Speaker 1: And depending on where you are as an organization and
- 45:32Speaker 1: what the move is, does the move service the one
- 45:35Speaker 1: year window, the three year window or the five year window?
- 45:37Speaker 1: For where the Patriots have been basically since Brady left,
- 45:40Speaker 1: and you could even argue for the last year or
- 45:42Speaker 1: two of Brady, we have been so focused on the
- 45:45Speaker 1: five year window as that was the case. They were
- 45:47Speaker 1: a five year window kind of team. They were not
- 45:49Speaker 1: a one year window kind of team. We are now
- 45:52Speaker 1: at a spot where you can is this a good
- 45:55Speaker 1: move for the five year window? No, it's not, But
- 45:58Speaker 1: is it a great move for the one to three
- 46:00Speaker 1: year window?
- 46:01Speaker 2: Yes?
- 46:01Speaker 1: And those are the windows that they should care about more.
- 46:04Speaker 1: We talked about this earlier the rookie contract. So that's
- 46:08Speaker 1: part one of why I don't mind they overpaid a
- 46:10Speaker 1: little bit. The other side of it is Evan how
- 46:12Speaker 1: many years, going back to Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Smith
- 46:17Speaker 1: and Odell Beckham and A. J. Brown the first time,
- 46:21Speaker 1: DeAndre Hopkins, Brandon Ayuk. Admittedly, they were right to not
- 46:24Speaker 1: make some of these moves. DK metcal Calvin Ridley and
- 46:29Speaker 1: they didn't get the player. And what did we say,
- 46:31Speaker 1: every time, you have to get uncomfortable to land that guy,
- 46:35Speaker 1: and they were never willing to get uncomfortable. And for
- 46:37Speaker 1: some of those admittedly maybe they didn't need to get uncomfortable.
- 46:40Speaker 1: Maybe they weren't in a spot where that move made sense.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Certainly in like twenty twenty, who's the I think was
- 46:44Speaker 1: Beckham in twenty twenty whatever, the brown No, the Browns
- 46:50Speaker 1: after Brady had left. I think it was like it
- 46:54Speaker 1: was like, Okay, that trade wouldn't have made sense, but
- 46:55Speaker 1: like now it does. You kind of have to lose
- 46:59Speaker 1: the trade in the long term to make one of
- 47:00Speaker 1: these deals.
- 47:01Speaker 2: I just think I just don't even know if they
- 47:03Speaker 2: totally lost the trade because Jalen Wattle went for all
- 47:08Speaker 2: the picks in twenty twenty six a first, a third,
- 47:10Speaker 2: and a fourth round pick, and they swapped fourth round picks.
- 47:13Speaker 2: So let's just call it a first and the third
- 47:15Speaker 2: because the fourth round picks were ones one eleven and
- 47:19Speaker 2: ones one thirty.
- 47:20Speaker 1: It's a matter that's almost a full to jump in
- 47:22Speaker 1: like a full round. That's not a significant it's half
- 47:24Speaker 1: a round. It's not significant nineteen.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Picks, but let's just call it for what it is,
- 47:27Speaker 2: right at first, a third, and some sweetener. Okay, to
- 47:31Speaker 2: for Jalen Wattle, who's a year younger, who's the year
- 47:35Speaker 2: is the I think Jalen Wattle is the twenty twenty
- 47:39Speaker 2: or twenty twenty one draft class and AJ Brown's the
- 47:41Speaker 2: twenty nineteen draft class. So a year younger. Uh maybe,
- 47:46Speaker 2: you know, if you believe some of the reporting on
- 47:47Speaker 2: the me a little bit healthier. But there's a significant
- 47:51Speaker 2: difference between picks not in twenty twenty seven, picks in
- 47:55Speaker 2: twenty twenty six, this year's draft. Yeah, two picks in
- 48:00Speaker 2: two years from now, a first round pick two years
- 48:02Speaker 2: from now. I understand in the world, you know, first
- 48:06Speaker 2: round picks a first round pick, but to most NFL people,
- 48:10Speaker 2: a year later means that it's actually you take a
- 48:13Speaker 2: round off. Yeah, I so entirely by that. Even if
- 48:16Speaker 2: you take a little bit of the value.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Off, I think the real value in it is time
- 48:22Speaker 1: the NFL. Time is a valuable thing, and you have one,
- 48:25Speaker 1: there's less certainty about what that pick will be in
- 48:28Speaker 1: two you have more time to recoup it. Get Ready, Evan,
- 48:31Speaker 1: we're doing a ton of will the Patriots? Should the
- 48:33Speaker 1: Patriots trade down? Talk next spring? Right down and.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Trade one of their players for surplus picks? Yeah, But
- 48:40Speaker 2: like the point I'm getting at is like I'm not
- 48:41Speaker 2: really entirely sold it. They overpaid on the trade. Like
- 48:45Speaker 2: I guess when I said the first round pick two
- 48:47Speaker 2: years from now, I'm not saying it like because you
- 48:49Speaker 2: said it. I'm just saying, like that was with the emails.
- 48:51Speaker 1: Off the trade. Coming off the trade, which team is
- 48:55Speaker 1: going to be based off the assets involved, which team
- 48:57Speaker 1: is going to be in a better spot in five years?
- 49:00Speaker 2: I guess you could argue the Eagles, but maybe because
- 49:03Speaker 2: I don't know, I didn't care about the five year window.
- 49:05Speaker 1: If you're the Patriots, it's not It's just not.
- 49:07Speaker 2: But I also don't know that that's true because like
- 49:10Speaker 2: and I know this is getting a little philosophical. Yeah,
- 49:12Speaker 2: but the one the two things that I talked about
- 49:14Speaker 2: consistently with this before the trade was made. First of all,
- 49:17Speaker 2: I was always cool with giving up the twenty twenty
- 49:19Speaker 2: eight first. I said that multiple times that I would
- 49:21Speaker 2: give up a twenty twenty eight first for A J. Brown.
- 49:23Speaker 2: That's what they ended up doing. The second thing is
- 49:26Speaker 2: is that you have to look at the big picture
- 49:28Speaker 2: of the investment that the organization is making in Drake May.
- 49:32Speaker 2: The worst possible thing that they could do as an
- 49:36Speaker 2: organization from this point on is have any sort of
- 49:39Speaker 2: regression for Drake May, right, and and have that be
- 49:42Speaker 2: because of them, right, whether that's coaching changes, roster changes,
- 49:47Speaker 2: you know, getting worse on the roster like they did
- 49:49Speaker 2: with mac Jones, whatever the case may be, going backwards
- 49:52Speaker 2: is not an option. So even if you over if
- 49:55Speaker 2: you want to concede what Floyd called overpaying for AJ Brown,
- 50:00Speaker 2: if you want to concede that point, in the long run,
- 50:03Speaker 2: isn't it worth it to make sure that Drake May
- 50:05Speaker 2: has everything that he needs to continue to progress and
- 50:08Speaker 2: to continue to get better and then hit his ceiling
- 50:11Speaker 2: as a player and as a football player, because five
- 50:13Speaker 2: years from now, if Drake May is just a perennial
- 50:16Speaker 2: MVP candidate, then who's better off than the Patriots.
- 50:20Speaker 1: This is where not to make this an analytics versus
- 50:24Speaker 1: eye test thing, but the numbers might end up saying
- 50:27Speaker 1: that the Eagles added more value in the long term more.
- 50:30Speaker 2: But I don't think you can. You can't quantify the
- 50:33Speaker 2: Drake May value. You can't quantify the human element.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Well just yeah, to.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Not use the mac Jones comparison, because I know people
- 50:41Speaker 2: hear that and they're like, well, he's stunk anyways, like
- 50:43Speaker 2: c J Stroud, c J Stroud had a great rookie season.
- 50:46Speaker 2: Argue they gave c J.
- 50:47Speaker 1: Stroud help, But c J.
- 50:48Speaker 2: Stroud, I don't know about that. I mean, their offensive
- 50:51Speaker 2: line is not good.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Okay, it didn't help the line coaching didn't help the lote.
- 50:54Speaker 2: That's fair. That's so c J. Stroud has this great
- 50:56Speaker 2: rookie year. He looks like he's the next thing. He's
- 50:59Speaker 2: really had a rookie year that was pretty comparable to
- 51:02Speaker 2: what Drake May just.
- 51:03Speaker 1: Did last year.
- 51:04Speaker 2: They didn't get as far in the playoffs, but similar.
- 51:07Speaker 2: So c J. Stroud has a year like that, and
- 51:09Speaker 2: then things start to decay a little bit around him. Now,
- 51:13Speaker 2: some of that's outside of their control, like Tank Dell
- 51:15Speaker 2: getting hurt and stuff like that, but the offensive coaching
- 51:18Speaker 2: takes a step back. Bobby Slowick wonder kid all of
- 51:21Speaker 2: a sudden becomes nothing right and he gets you know, scapegoated,
- 51:25Speaker 2: basically gets fired. They've never really figured out that offensive line.
- 51:29Speaker 2: They traded Lumie Tunsel, which I still don't understand why
- 51:31Speaker 2: they did that. You know, they do all these different things,
- 51:34Speaker 2: and now all of a sudden, c J. Stroud's playing
- 51:36Speaker 2: a playoff game here against the Patriots and throwing five
- 51:38Speaker 2: interceptions in half right, and it's like, holy crap, what
- 51:42Speaker 2: just happened. Like we thought we had our franchise quarterback.
- 51:44Speaker 2: We thought we were sent for the next ten years.
- 51:46Speaker 2: Now we don't even know if we want to give
- 51:48Speaker 2: the guy a second contract. And the investment of AJ
- 51:52Speaker 2: Brown in Drake may in that sense in the long term,
- 51:56Speaker 2: I know you're gonna love this. It's something you can't
- 51:58Speaker 2: quantify it. It's it's exactly what I want to say.
- 52:01Speaker 2: The analytics are going to tell you the Eagles won
- 52:03Speaker 2: this trade. It's gonna go beyond that. All right, let's uh,
- 52:07Speaker 2: let's take some of these calls because the callscreen is
- 52:09Speaker 2: lighting up. We have a bunch of emails too. I
- 52:11Speaker 2: do want to get to my developing half baked takes
- 52:15Speaker 2: on OTAs, and I don't feel like I I've seen
- 52:18Speaker 2: enough yet for them to be fully baked sure takes,
- 52:20Speaker 2: so I'm gonna call them developing takes on OTAs. But
- 52:24Speaker 2: let's take some of these calls because I know you
- 52:25Speaker 2: guys have been waiting. Patty is an ag on what's up, Patty?
- 52:30Speaker 5: What's up?
- 52:30Speaker 6: Guys? How you doing today?
- 52:31Speaker 2: Good?
- 52:34Speaker 4: All right?
- 52:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I was on record that I didn't want to
- 52:37Speaker 5: trade for Brown just because of the cost. But Paul
- 52:39Speaker 5: kind of made a pretty good common sense point yesterday
- 52:43Speaker 5: on tu and I'm not going to get into it
- 52:45Speaker 5: all like, I'm not even gonna try and pteraphrase it,
- 52:47Speaker 5: but that and you know, just listening to him talk
- 52:51Speaker 5: at his pressery yesterday, Evan, I think you brought this
- 52:54Speaker 5: up that he just sounded genuinely like excited to be here,
- 52:57Speaker 5: and that's that's something I can't remember us having in
- 53:00Speaker 5: a long time as an elite player, you know. And
- 53:04Speaker 5: I want to my big picture question going forward, is Hey,
- 53:09Speaker 5: you brought this up yesterday Evan, and he brought it
- 53:11Speaker 5: up again today. Do you almost have to keep Pop
- 53:13Speaker 5: Douglas at this point, at least for this season before
- 53:15Speaker 5: he could possibly go into the draft next year and
- 53:19Speaker 5: get another speedy guy? Because if I mean, if you
- 53:21Speaker 5: only have Kyle Williams as as your one fast wide receiver,
- 53:25Speaker 5: does that sort of handcuff you and I'll take it
- 53:27Speaker 5: out there, guys?
- 53:28Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks, Patty. I guess it depends on the summer
- 53:31Speaker 2: that Kyle Williams has, like if he's really making that
- 53:34Speaker 2: leap and making that push. But I never really considered
- 53:38Speaker 2: Pop Douglas as an odd man out yet because he
- 53:41Speaker 2: does bring such a different dimension. Like even if Pop Douglas,
- 53:44Speaker 2: who's on the last year of his rookie contracts, it's
- 53:46Speaker 2: not like you're paying him much, Right, even if Pop
- 53:48Speaker 2: Douglas is just kind of a speed gadget player and
- 53:52Speaker 2: he's kind of like a fourth or fifth wide receiver
- 53:54Speaker 2: that plays in certain packages and certain passing situations, I
- 53:58Speaker 2: don't know why you'd have to move on from that player,
- 54:01Speaker 2: Like it seems to me like that they have they have.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Just the argument is like if Chishom really comes along, right, But.
- 54:09Speaker 2: I just feel like they and you said this earlier,
- 54:11Speaker 2: I just feel like they're so different. Like Chishom is
- 54:13Speaker 2: not going to bring speed to the right.
- 54:14Speaker 1: But the idea is, if you have and I like Pop,
- 54:18Speaker 1: if it's Brown, Dobbs, Hollins, Williams, and you just for
- 54:23Speaker 1: whatever reason, you're keeping five wide receivers, right, and that's
- 54:26Speaker 1: just the limit that that's the way the roster dictates, right,
- 54:30Speaker 1: Chisham could play special teams Pops on his expiring contract
- 54:34Speaker 1: if you can get something for him. I don't think
- 54:36Speaker 1: Pop Douglas gets cut. I really don't think he gets cut.
- 54:39Speaker 1: If somebody calls you with the fifth round pick, is
- 54:41Speaker 1: the gap close enough between Pop Douglas and Fton Chisholm
- 54:44Speaker 1: that okay, Well, if we can get a fifth for
- 54:46Speaker 1: this guy and expiring contract, we'll get the fifth and
- 54:49Speaker 1: then Chistm will get the last spot. I don't love that,
- 54:51Speaker 1: especially because of the speed. Like you mentioned that to me,
- 54:54Speaker 1: is how if you're gonna ask how does Chisham end
- 54:57Speaker 1: up on the roster but Pop doesn't that? Yeah, that's
- 54:59Speaker 1: the only do I see that happening. Yeah, I guess
- 55:01Speaker 1: I just of course they could both make it.
- 55:03Speaker 2: I agree with Patty's premise of I think that Pop
- 55:07Speaker 2: brings enough of a different skill set that I think
- 55:11Speaker 2: his skill sets valuable because even to Kyle Williams, I'm
- 55:13Speaker 2: with you, he's a little different than Kyle Williams, very different,
- 55:16Speaker 2: Like he's more of a jitterbug, he's more of an
- 55:18Speaker 2: inside player. I don't think that they're all that much
- 55:22Speaker 2: alike either. I think Kyle Williams is much more of
- 55:24Speaker 2: a linear, down the field athlete, whereas you know, Pop
- 55:28Speaker 2: is really that jitterbug slot was maybe a little bit
- 55:30Speaker 2: more vertical stretch than like a Julian Edelman or something
- 55:34Speaker 2: like that. Sean is in Vancouver. What's up, Sean?
- 55:38Speaker 7: So kysh on Booty for von tap Iteau makes sense
- 55:42Speaker 7: to me? Is that something trade that you think will happen?
- 55:46Speaker 7: And the other question you address that the tight ends
- 55:48Speaker 7: with Julian Hill being out one player retro You didn't
- 55:52Speaker 7: mention that it could be someone they bring in is
- 55:56Speaker 7: Tucker Fisk. But what's more likely that they bring in
- 56:01Speaker 7: a free another free agent, or they just have a
- 56:04Speaker 7: competition amongst their own players. So I'll leave you with that.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Thanks, thanks, Shawn. I appreciate the call. So on the
- 56:10Speaker 2: tight ends, I would say, this is usually to me,
- 56:14Speaker 2: something that would happen like sometime in August.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they'll they'll see what they.
- 56:18Speaker 2: Have, right Like if you get to like right around
- 56:20Speaker 2: that first preseason game and you're not loving what you're
- 56:23Speaker 2: seeing out of the udfas or Randon's not quite ready
- 56:26Speaker 2: to be the second tight end, and maybe that's when
- 56:28Speaker 2: you pick up the phone and call some of these
- 56:30Speaker 2: free agents.
- 56:30Speaker 1: I'll give you one more name that I don't think
- 56:33Speaker 1: we mentioned earlier. Sure, Anthony Firkser. Oh yeah, he was
- 56:36Speaker 1: in Tennessee right, was in Tennessee with Rabel. He was
- 56:39Speaker 1: also here for a very brief moment twenty twenty three
- 56:43Speaker 1: Harvard guy. Oh no, he signed never mind, he signed
- 56:47Speaker 1: with the Commanders. Well, he signed today with the Commanders.
- 56:51Speaker 1: That's why I looked at this yesterday. He was definitely
- 56:53Speaker 1: on the list.
- 56:54Speaker 2: Maybe they thought the Patriots were going to swoop in.
- 56:58Speaker 1: When did this happen? Oh, tay started happened yesterday.
- 57:02Speaker 2: Okay, because that's a classic. You know, all these guys
- 57:05Speaker 2: that Rabel has brought over, and it's another classic one
- 57:07Speaker 2: of those I remember for he had it. Didn't you
- 57:09Speaker 2: have a decent game in the playoff game they had
- 57:11Speaker 2: here in nineteen Yeah, I had a couple catch.
- 57:13Speaker 1: Up one hundred yards for him in twenty twenty.
- 57:15Speaker 2: Yeah, Todd is in Gardner. What's up? Todd?
- 57:19Speaker 4: Hey, guys, I know I've been a little bit nonpulsed
- 57:21Speaker 4: and about the A. G. Brown signing because I really
- 57:24Speaker 4: think that it's all about Drake and I just want
- 57:28Speaker 4: to know what you guys think he needs to focus
- 57:30Speaker 4: on to take that, you know, the next step. We
- 57:32Speaker 4: know that he's already taken the first one, and I
- 57:35Speaker 4: think AVP for a lot of it too, So I
- 57:37Speaker 4: think he made a difference. So what's next. Does he
- 57:39Speaker 4: need to be able to do pre snap adjustments better,
- 57:42Speaker 4: does he need to have a better perception of what's
- 57:44Speaker 4: going on with the defense? Or what do you think
- 57:46Speaker 4: his next step in his evolution now takes the answer
- 57:49Speaker 4: up there?
- 57:49Speaker 2: Thanks guys, Thanks Todd. You know, I got to be honest.
- 57:53Speaker 2: We've talked a lot about this on PU. I agree
- 57:57Speaker 2: with some of the premise of mentally, could he take
- 58:00Speaker 2: that next step seeing things pre snap diagnosing Blitz's pre
- 58:04Speaker 2: snab you know, basically orchestrating the offense at the line
- 58:09Speaker 2: of scrimmage. I'm sure there are things that he could
- 58:11Speaker 2: probably take that next step in. Honestly, to me, I
- 58:15Speaker 2: just think the next step for him is just experience
- 58:17Speaker 2: and against elite opponents in like critical moments. He only's
- 58:22Speaker 2: done it once. And you know, this is probably bigger
- 58:24Speaker 2: in other sports like the NBA and stuff like that,
- 58:26Speaker 2: but most of the time, you have to like taste
- 58:28Speaker 2: your own blood a couple of times before you get
- 58:30Speaker 2: over the hump. You know. Mahomes and Brady are kind
- 58:32Speaker 2: of anomalies there, although Mahomemes lost to Brady the first time,
- 58:38Speaker 2: so maybe that that's a good example there. I personally,
- 58:41Speaker 2: I think that all that Drake may needs is more experience,
- 58:45Speaker 2: Like he needs to play more football, right And I
- 58:47Speaker 2: don't think that it's anything that he's physically or even
- 58:51Speaker 2: really mentally behind on or just not capable of doing.
- 58:55Speaker 2: I just think that he's twenty three and he just
- 58:58Speaker 2: needs to act, just play more and see more defenses
- 59:02Speaker 2: and play more football. Last year was his first playoff run.
- 59:06Speaker 2: It was his first playoff run against statistically one of
- 59:09Speaker 2: the hardest pass of defenses that any quarterback has ever faced,
- 59:12Speaker 2: at least in like the more more recent NFL history.
- 59:15Speaker 2: So I think he just needs to see more of it.
- 59:19Speaker 2: I don't know if there's one. You know, a lot
- 59:21Speaker 2: of people have pointed to like the Blitzes and some
- 59:23Speaker 2: of the things Seattle did to them in the Super Bowl.
- 59:26Speaker 2: I agree, But at the same time, like how many
- 59:29Speaker 2: defenses are realistically going to replicate that at the level
- 59:32Speaker 2: that Seattle?
- 59:33Speaker 4: Right?
- 59:33Speaker 1: That was And I mean, look, well, I guess when
- 59:35Speaker 1: you get when you when you get the Rams in
- 59:37Speaker 1: the Super Bowl this year. Yeah, but now we've seen it, right,
- 59:39Speaker 1: So that's not something you're gonna have to do. It's
- 59:41Speaker 1: a good point. That's not something you have to deal
- 59:42Speaker 1: with weekend and weak on.
- 59:43Speaker 2: I just think that all of these things that we're
- 59:45Speaker 2: talking about, whether it's uh diagnosing defenses, pre snap control
- 59:51Speaker 2: of the offense, all those different types of things, that
- 59:54Speaker 2: that's all experience based, Like none of that is like
- 59:57Speaker 2: he's you know, anything else other then him just seeing
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: more of it. And I think that that just comes
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: in time. Uh, Marcus is in South Carolina. I believe
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: what's up, Marcus?
- 1:00:10Speaker 8: What's going on?
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: Fellas?
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: How are we doing eight.
- 1:00:13Speaker 8: Doing doing good, doing good, great week to be a Patriot.
- 1:00:17Speaker 8: You know, I just want to say, I think now,
- 1:00:22Speaker 8: you know, for the first time, we got a superstar
- 1:00:25Speaker 8: receiver that actually wants to be a Patriot. You know,
- 1:00:29Speaker 8: that's something that we just you know, it's not Stefan Digg,
- 1:00:32Speaker 8: not that he didn't enjoy being a Patriot, but Eddrie
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: Brown really wanted to be here. And so I think
- 1:00:38Speaker 8: this makes us into a contend like we already contender,
- 1:00:42Speaker 8: but a super contender now with the top five quarterback
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: in my opinion, And I want to know where y'all
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: rank us in the AFC if you had to guess
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: playoff seating wise and the schedule coming up? What are
- 1:00:58Speaker 8: your projections for us going into next season? Thanks to both.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Thanks for the call, Marcus. I think we said it
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: earlier that we both feel like they're right there at
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: the top of the AFC. Where will they end up
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: seeding wise obviously at the schedule, and do they win
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: the division? Do they not win the division?
- 1:01:14Speaker 9: Too?
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: You talk about that, you mentioned the Broncos. Have you
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: have them in the Broncos right there is like one two.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: I'd say them the Broncos. You know, obviously the Old Guary, Buffalo, Baltimore,
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: Kansas City. If those teams have peak seasons, then they're
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: gonna be all right.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: So take Baltimore out of that for a second. The
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Patriots just to play the Bills, but they each get
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: to play the Dolphins and the Jets twice.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: The Broncos have to go through the Chargers, the Chiefs,
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: and who knows they. I mean, if you believe in
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Fernando Mendoza, the Raiders should be better than.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: They should be scratched.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: Should the Raiders power rank these teams this year? Raiders Dolphins, Jets,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Raiders Dolphins, Jets. Yeah, Raiders Jets, Dolphins. Okay, so the
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: Raiders are better than the Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: So like that, when it comes down a seating between
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: the Patriots and the Broncos, Ye, the Broncos are thinking,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: what's more likely the Patriots when their division or the
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Broncos when there's.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: Come on, it's probably the Patriots.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: So I just don't I don't necessarily the reason why
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: I hesitated. Yeah, the Chargers to me are still this
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: team that is great on paper that still hasn't realized
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: it's potentially.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Yeah, but that always happens in the playoffs.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: But I just in general, and that's still like I'm
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: not like did did Jim Harbaugh? Thing has worked in
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: terms of their respectable team now, but like, I'm not convinced.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: And then I'm not convinced that Mahomes and Reid have
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: this huge bounce back. So you don't have to.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: Talk to me about the Chargers being a paper tiger,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: Like I'm with you on that, but you can catch
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: if you catch them on the wrong day. They're talented.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: The Chargers are a ten win team just.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: Right, who's going to who's more likely to sneak up on?
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: So I would count the Chargers as the third team
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: in the West.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: I just think that is the reason why I hesitated
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: to simplify it. I just think the Bills are the
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: second best team, right, Like it's the Patriots and the
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: Broncos and the Bills and then there's the and if
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: AFC West teams come after the Bills.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: And then I'll we can throw the Ravens back in there.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: Like who that division might be terrible, so they might
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: get the one seed ultimately, but like.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Another nine to eight division champ or whatever, it was
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: last year ten and seven. Yeah, the Steelers.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I think we talked about the Patriots and the Broncos.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: The Patriots would be more likely to win their division
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: in the Broncos. And then because the Yeah, the Patriots
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: and the Bills. But like the Charge, even if the
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Chargers don't finish with a better record, the Chargers can
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: get you. The Raiders can get you more than I
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: think an off day against the Jets or the Dolphins
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: is gonna get you. And then and then we'll see
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: what the Chiefs.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: The Chiefs, the Chargers are definitely a better team than
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: the Dolphins and the Jets.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: So I'm counting the Chargers the third team in the West.
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: So you think the Chiefs are gonna second or the second.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: But I think the Chiefs will ultimately be Okay, I
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: I short term. I mean they're gonna be a tough
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: out this year. They'll be competitive. They'll be in the
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: playoff converse, like they should win. They should be in
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: it in December and January. And do they end up
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: his like the eight seed and just out Maybe I
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: think that's probably around where their floor is. But they
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: still have a good defense. I know they've lost some pieces,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: but they still with the defense, they still Patrick Mahomes
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: like they're gonna be if they're not gonna They're not
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: the Dolphins, they're the Gets.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: No, No, they're definitely better than that. I just the
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: thing with the Chiefs to me is I just don't
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: really I don't really fully understand what they're doing. Like
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: the Trent McDuffie trade to me just made me. I
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: think they're trying to get ahead on a rebuild. I
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: think they know they need to rebuild around Mahomes. They
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: don't want to be but if they needed to rebuild
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: them around Mahomes, which I I sort of agree with,
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: but like the rebuild was the offense. The rebuild is
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: skilled players on offense. They need more pass catchers and they.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Don't want to try to do that through free agency.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: The fact that they haven't called Stefan Diggs and got.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Him and they.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: Have, I mean, how is Stefan Diggs not a Chief?
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: I just don't he doesn't want to do ots. Maybe
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: maybe that's all he's doing. Steph gilmorell see in the summer, but.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Yeah, there's Zeke Elliott.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: I think there.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: I just think that that's crazy that that's that should
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: be an automatic slam down.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: I think there's a better chance the AFC West all
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: beats up on each other.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: I mean just like not to do the Chiefs thing,
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: but imagining how good Digs is that feeling out zones
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: and like finding like openings and getting celebrate with the homes,
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: Like isn't that just Mahomes and Travis Kelcey and like
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: the improv that they've done for years, Like it's the
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: same thing that they can be doing with Diggs. Christian
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: is in LA. What's up? Christian?
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: Hey you guys, Hey, you guys, Hey, you guys. Hey,
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: So let's let's get some for me. What is some
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: of the people are missing when they talk about who
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: in the afp uh, we have to go through what.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: I did not see any team in the AFC make
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: such significant provement that I went, wow, we got to
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: really look out for those guys like the Rams did
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: over the off season. The NFCS go wow, we really
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: got to prepare for the Rams. I don't really see
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: anybody but us. Actually that made that kind of move
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: in the A that sort of scared me from where
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: they were last year. Secondly, you guys are forgetting that
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: bow Knicks had a significant injury last year, so much
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: so that the Raw Rock coach that Sean Payton is
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: literally said I would not have drafted him had I
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: known about the injury. So we have to see what's
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: gonna happen with bow Nick. Is he going to regress
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: naturally as a quarterback like in the second year or
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: so forth, and with that natural regression, is this injury
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: that is now reoccurring. Is that going to be a
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: factor in how Lebron goes back up? But what I
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: really want to get to, what I really want to
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: get you guys to put a little more focus on,
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: is I think the key player in our offense really
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: is Traveon Henderson. I think with his ability, I Meanmandre
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: is Demandre, we know what he's going to do, we
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: know what he's going to get. We got a better
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: line supposedly this year. Lemandre is not not the home
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: run hitter by impact player that Traveon Henderson I believe
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: is and can develop into. So for me, I know
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: a J. Brown is going to a J.
- 1:07:01Speaker 10: Brown.
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: I know Romeo's going to Romeo, and the tight end
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: situation will work itself out in some degree. The key
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: impact player for me, that turns the season into a
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: you know, these guys are moonshotting. Its Traveon Henderson. I
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: think when you got Kyle Williams, if you can develop
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: on the outside, that's sort of a Jamison Williams comp
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: I hope he developed into that. You've got Remandre that's
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: sort of the guy they traded from the.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Line last year, David Montgomery.
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: Then you got Montgomery, and then you got uh, you know,
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: you got a J who's the Armon Rod as far
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: as yards and totals an impact. And then you got
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: this this, this Travion Henderson, which I think he's Jremior,
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: gives two point oh. If we can develop him behind
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: this line again, the other guys gonna do, they're gonna do.
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: He to me is a pivotal impact player. So could
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: you guys talk about how if he develops, how that
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: really does open up the rest of the offense more
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: so than even in a J. Brown, if you really
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: want to talk about it, If Travion develops, that's gonna
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: really bring those those two high spaceies down. And then
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: you really got you know, a J. Brown doing what
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: AJ Brown does. Anyway, I love calling you guys on
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: your day too, So I'll take it up the air
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: and thank you guys for having me.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: Thanks for the call. Christian. Yeah, look, I think that
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: with Traveon Henderson, like I'm just not how do I
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: put this. I guess like he's always going to be
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: a home run hitter to me, Yeah, and there's nothing
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: wrong with that. That's a good element of the offense
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: to have. And I just don't know if he's gonna
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: be on the fields and have the volume to do
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: what Christian's saying where he's making this huge impact on
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: like tilting the game like a jumior give right.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: No, it's it's it's still although I did like he
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: was when we talked Henderson yesterday, he mentioned that that
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: pass blocking yeah, and in route runner or two things
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: he wants to work on, which are good, Yeah, because
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: I mean it makes thee more well rounded. Back it's
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: AJ Brown having the impact on him. It's what we
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: talked about earlier, bringing those safeties back. I don't think
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: you're gonna see teams start loading the box to stop
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Travon Henderson with AJ Brown on the outside. If AJ
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: Brown's producing, I think they'll give you Traveon Henderson all day.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: Now, well that would and that was you know, not
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: to do a math thing. But that's just the math.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: Like the math just tells you that AJ Brown's gonna
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: average sixteen yards a catch if you single cover him
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: on the outside, Travion's going to average like four and
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: a half five yards of carry. What would you rather
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: do give up sixteen yards per pass or five yards situation?
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: And there's all these other factors in it, But but
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: just on the surf, sure it becomes about Henderson making
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: the most and Stevenson too, making the most of those opportunities. Yeah. No,
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: the run game as a whole is a big fact.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think the big thing for Henderson there
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: is he struggled in traffic last year and if a J.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Brown is pulling a defender out of the box and
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: it's one less guy, he has to navigate the better.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: But yeah, it's still going to be a J. Brown,
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Like AJ Brown is still.
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: The full Yeah no, I look at we we said
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: this speed element with Kyle Williams. I guess you could
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: make the case as well with Trayvon Henderson, Like he's yeah,
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: if he had brings a dimension of speed that he
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: brought last year, I just don't necessarily think he needs
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: to be anything more than he was last year to
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: have a big impact. Like what he was last year
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: was what they needed him to be, a big home
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: run hitter that you know, once or twice a month
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: was hit in a sixty yard touchdown run Like that's
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: the type of guy that they need him to be,
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: and hopefully that's the kind of guy he is now.
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: If he's Jamiir Gibbs and he you know, Gibbs had
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: about nine hundred yards his rookie year, then had sixteen
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: hundred his second year. You know, I don't know if
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: he's that, but that's what the year two lead for
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: Jamiir Gibbs was was massive. It was a superstar player.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: Just going through to the first point of his call.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: The Titans had a very good offseason. You could argue
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: the Titans did as much as the Patriots, but obviously
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: they're starting for much for like the.
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: Raiders, the Titans like the teams that's so stunk.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: The other two teams, I would say the Bengals had
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: decent offseason.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: They like Dexter Lawrence, trade Dexter Lawrence.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: They had a boy Mafey, Jonathan Allen like they got
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: better in the trenches. They also got Brian Cook and
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: Kyle Duggar. There's two good safeties, but none of it
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: matters if Joe Burt doesn't say I also don't believe
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: in that coach, and then all that is that too,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: And then I don't know how much credit do you
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: give the Ravens for just Trey Hendrickson and Ouziat.
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: If he plays I guess on an addition, but he
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: didn't play all last year that neck injury. So if
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: he's back, like that's an all Pro caliber defensive tackle.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: Let's rifle through the last of these calls and we
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: gotta take a quick break. Eldred is in North Carolina?
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: What's up? Aldred?
- 1:11:20Speaker 6: Fellas?
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: Good?
- 1:11:22Speaker 6: Hey?
- 1:11:22Speaker 11: Uh tell Christians they're looking on AJ's face.
- 1:11:26Speaker 6: Remind me of Moss when when they first got Moss
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: in two thousand and seven.
- 1:11:31Speaker 11: You know, like, I got something to prove, So I
- 1:11:34Speaker 11: think you'll do all right. But like you said in
- 1:11:36Speaker 11: that pressor, you want to miss one game with that
- 1:11:39Speaker 11: nie out of four years, so you know, so I think.
- 1:11:42Speaker 6: He's about ready.
- 1:11:44Speaker 11: My question is everybody keeps talking about Pop.
- 1:11:47Speaker 6: And Booty's leave. Okay, I understand, you know the situation.
- 1:11:51Speaker 11: Okay, I know Mac Holland's got one certain what your call,
- 1:11:55Speaker 11: But don't you have a UDFA that's.
- 1:11:57Speaker 6: Young and can block and run two six four?
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:12:01Speaker 6: Excuse him?
- 1:12:02Speaker 11: Like maybe the sixth receiver is dead A Hollands because
- 1:12:06Speaker 11: because of the age and stuff to develop your young
- 1:12:08Speaker 11: and players has come up to take uh my boy
- 1:12:12Speaker 11: brown plays on brown leaves.
- 1:12:15Speaker 6: That's why I would try it anyway.
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: But I don't know, what do you out think take
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: it off their thanks he's talking about Kyle Dixon.
- 1:12:22Speaker 6: Yeah, I just it.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: There's a guy coming from the NAI level. Mac Collins
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: is proven, he can do what Trake made his great
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: chemistry with him. It's it's way too soon to start
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: talking about making a movie.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean Kyle Dixon as a fringe roster practice
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: squad player for a year, while Mac Collins is the
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: guy on the roster that's getting that role.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe eventually that's the switch.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: But yeah, I like Mac. I think Mac Collins is
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: like a low key glue guy. Oh yeah, yeah, Well
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: there's the chemistry, the chemistry, the comfort level, the type
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: of routes that he that he can run over, the
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: middle of the field, the blocking uh, the the culture
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: ad in the locker room, there's a super fun guy
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: to have in the room. And you know, in that
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: wide receiver room veteran presence. I'm not saying that he's
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: a J Brown like talent wise, but in a room there,
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: you need some guys that are just cool with being
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: the veteran role player. Like he's cool with being the
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: veteran role player. And you're gonna have you know, AJ
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: Brown and Romeo Dobbs are going to want a lot
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: of targets. The other guys are hungry and want opportunities,
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: the younger guys. And Matt Collins is kind of just
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: like I'm Matt Collins, like I'm you know, I'm chilling,
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: which I think you need a little bit. Al's in California.
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: I'll call us back. All right, We're going to take

- 1:16:03Speaker 2: Catch touch, cuck.
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: Catch twenty two cachuchchech touch catch.

- 1:16:40Speaker 2: wrapped coil system, those are a little bit of a
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: tongue twister in a read. Sounds like it, but we
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: made it through. What's going on with this this iPhone game?
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: Tell me about this iPhone I like to do a
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: little silly in the middle. You want to, Yeah, a
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: little silly. It's a little silly non football.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: So this is kind up on Twitter. It's called the
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: eighty two and oh yeah. So it it gives you
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: you basically just start and you shuffle. It's every team
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: and then it's every decade the sixties through now, and
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: so you spin the wheel and so it'll give you
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: like Celtics two thousands, and then you pick a player
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: off the roster, and obviously each player is limited to positions,
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: and you go through and you try to pick the
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: best five, and it tells you based on like the
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: stats it does, points, rebounds, assists, block steals, like it
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: gives you a record and the goals to make a
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: team that can go eighty two and oh and the
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: best I've done so far, I got seventy eight wins
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: is the closest I've gotten. If they ever make a
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: football version of this, and it would be a lot
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: harder with football, somebody's gonna try it, because you always
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: get copycats with stuff like this. If they ever make
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: a football version, you're not gonna hear from me for
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Okay, So that our walk into the stadium today because
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: there's all this FIFA stuff going on so hooked, so
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: everything's all shut down. Alex was just walking in and
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: he was just rattling off names from obscure NBA decades
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: and just say, you know, well, here seventy seven.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: Here's here's my here's my here's the best I've done
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: so far. Okay, Alan iverson Kevin Durant, Michael Jordan, Jannis,
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Moses Malone. Okay, so Moses Malone seems to be like
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: an X factor in a lot of these that you
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: want to go older center because there's like the absurd
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: rebounding numbers. Okay, so that helps you. We were I
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: had not gotten Bill Russell yet.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: The older centers just like part their butt on the
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: post and just turn around.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Well, so I did one other seventy seven win team.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: You'll like this Steph Curry, Yeah, Lebron, James, Dominique Wilkins,
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: Bob Pettitt, and Wemby.
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: So obviously I know that they're gonna make it hard
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: to do this, but basically the team you're going for
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: is like Steph Curry, Michael Jordan, Lebron, James, Magic Johnson,
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: Kareem or like something like that.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: Right, So that that would be one guy did get
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: to I saw one guy got to eighty two and
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: oher on Twitter. It was I'm trying to find his team.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: I thought I had so his he he got eighty
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: two and zero, Magic, Luca Kawhi, Raptors Kawhi, Ralph Sampson,
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: Wilt Chamberlain.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: It's pretty good.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: That's not bad.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: Although I'm hunting Luca on defense, like he's going out
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: in style like Luca Luca. I'm just like running through
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: every screen. Luca's on the ball the entire game. Lucas
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: like in a drench sweat. By the end, he does
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: can't do nothing.
- 1:19:22Speaker 6: So hit.
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: There's an eighty one and one too. It's Chris Paul,
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: Kevin Durant, Paul George, Charles Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain.
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: That's pretty good too.
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: Where's the one loss?
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: Charles is uh quickly becoming like underappreciated.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: Yeah, he really is.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: I know he didn't win a title, but he was
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: still tremendous the.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: Football version that maybe you would probably have to use
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: analytics to the football version because it would be really tough.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: To well, it would be like because it would be
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: twenty two guys, right, it'd have to be eleven.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: Well, I think you would probably you probably you'd probably
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: do like quarterback running back. You probably do like a
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: fantasy line up, quarterback, running back, two receivers, tight end, guard,
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: interior defensive lineman, edge linebacker, corner safety. I would put
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: a kicker in there. I'm guessing whoever does It wouldn't
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: and then you would do like whoever, you just collecting
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: the best epam.
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: I'm anti, but they're also well, no.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: There hasn't been a ten that's gone seventeen and O
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: it's Tina's gone sixteen and.
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: Oh I'm anti kicker in fantasy. That's my new that's
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: my new thing.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: We need to get you in the punter league.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: I didn't know. We don't.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: Yes we do, yes we so for those who don't know,
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: to see me and Cel and s guys did an
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: all punter fantasy league a couple years ago. It was
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: very fun.
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: You guys are diabol you.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: We have to get you in.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: People make so much fun of me for being a
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: nerd here, and rightfully so you guys, they don't know we're.
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: Putting you in the pod.
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: I'm like a stats and numbers nerd, maybe more than
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: the rest of you, but just the dorkiness of the
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: lot of you. I have to say. And look, it's
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: we can't air it and we're not recording it, so
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: don't ask. But our conversations during practice are our elite like, well,
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: it's a fun.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: Time, like we're going back to us mic double practic.
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: No, because we can't say half the things that we.
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: Say, and I control myself when I'm on a microphone.
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: Yeah, well yeah, but that's not organic. Then that's not
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: the It's not I don't know that.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: It's like, I just have a tendency to swear when
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: I'm not out of micu's pretty much.
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: Yet I have a tendanty to swear when I am
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: on them. That's true.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: You're worse with it.
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: All right, let's get into my half baked development.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: Please make football eighty two and oh and let me
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: know when it's up.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: Well, it would be nineteen still.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: Seventeen eighteen. We assume you get the buy, seventy eighteen
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: twenty oh.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: Yeah, at least, well, I guess you could go nineteen
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: and oh right.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: Well they're going to go to eighteen games soon, so
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: twenty one. You couldn't go nineteen.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: Oh no, you can't. You can it's twenty or twenty one.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: In theory, you could go undefeated without the buy because
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: you could have two teams in the same conference go undefeated.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: So seventeen games plus four twenty one and oh it'll
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: be twenty two and oh soon.
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: Okay, let's get back.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: If you make twenty one and oh, please let me know.
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: I will share it.
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: It was had enough fun for everybody. And the other
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: thing I get made fun of for Ace is I'm
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: too much of a nerd and I hate fun. So
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: I had a little that was like three minutes of
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: unsequestered fun. You're welcome.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: Well, I don't think you, the resident hoopad should play
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: eighty two and oh see if you can do better
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: than I can.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: This NBA Finals. It's not the hardest I've ever written
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: it against a team to be fun, but rooting against
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: the Knicks is gonna fuel my viewing of the NBA Finals.
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: Although Wemby being a Frenchman has nothing to do with
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: the French I'm just a big USA basketball head.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: As you know, you refuse to admit that the world
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: has maybe caught up.
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: I am very, very concerned about the twenty twenty eight
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: Summer Olympics and Victor Rembayama dunking on like Chet Holmgren's
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: head because we have no other centers.
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: Yeah, not great.
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: Okay, let's get in to my developing takes on the
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: Patriots through two he ate practices. So Alex and I
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: were out there yesterday, we were out there last week
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: and then we'll be out there for the three day
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: mini camp the following week. But there's only been two practices,
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: and it's what did Dan Campbell call it the pajama
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: party something like that, which I loved, the one thing
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: that he's ever said that, I've actually really liked the
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: pajama party. So it's not real football quite yet, but
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: I have some developing takes, nothing too strong developing. So
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: the first one I said it last week and I
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: continued to be in the same mood with Romeo Dobbs.
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: I just like the way he looks. I think he's
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: got the body type. I think he's got the hands,
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: the strength. He's like a sturdy receiver. He plays strong.
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: I would call him that prototypical power slot, right. He's
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: not the quick twitch, jitterbug slot, but he's that Chris
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: Godwin Jacoby Meyers somewhere in the middle, probably power slot.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: I know Greg Badar took a lot of heat for
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: saying he was underwhelmed and compared him to the Jacoby
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: my But I think to bare him to Jacoby Myers
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: is is a compliment. Like if he ends up being
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: Jacoby Myers, maybe more like Raiders Jaguars, Jacoby Myers. I
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: think maybe hit a thousand yards at one point at
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: that point in time. That's fine with me. But that
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: that power slot, I like what I see out of him.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: That being said, really early on in the chemistry process,
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: I think with him and Drake May that they got
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: a ways to go before they understand where each other's
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: at on the field, because he is going to be
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: a little bit more you know, it's more timing based,
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: like at the catch point and boxing guys out like
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: He's not gonna be Digs who was just getting, you know,
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: a lot of separation at the top of the route
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: and making it pretty clear picture wise. What have you
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: been in your first impressions of Romeo Dops Yeah, kind
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: of same.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: I'm a little maybe more optimistic about where their chemistry
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: is at now they've him to go for the season,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: but I think for where they're at as they start
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: installing the offense. But same thing I always said, I
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: thought Green Bay used him too much vertically. I liked
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: him underneath, and I've really liked for the very very
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: very brief looks we've gotten the usage that he's had
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: so far.
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that he's gonna fit in well in
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: that role once they get really rolling with him and
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: Drake may second thing on the wide receivers, I always
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: take the cheese this time of year. I'm trying to learn,
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: yeh from my mistakes. I'm trying not to do taekwon again.
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: I'm trying not to overrate the pajama party, overrate the
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: you know, glorified seven on seven passing camps. But calling
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: this spades page just what we've seen on the field.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: I think Pop Douglas and Eftin Chisholm have popped in
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: both practices, no pun intended. I think they've both been active.
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: They've been targeted a lot, They've been opened a lot.
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: Pop had a really nice day yesterday, ran two really
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: good routes where he just kind of really shook the
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: defenders at the top of the route. Brandon Crossley, I
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: think he broke his ankles on that juke after the catch.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: So this is their time of year to shine. It
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: is the pajama party. There is no contact, there's no
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: threat of the safety coming down. There's not a lot
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: of contact at the line of scrimmage. But I think
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: both those guys pop more with the ones after Chisholm's
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: been Tommy DeVito's guy with the twos have both acclimated
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: themselves really well this early part of the process. When
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: am I allowed to believe Alex because I'm trying not
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: to fall for the banana and the tailpipe again. But
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: if I'm just saying what I'm seeing out of this practice,
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: I'm seeing number three Pop Douglas from Drake May a
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: lot at these two sessions.
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: When the pads come on, look credit where credits to
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: Pop Douglas. With Keisham Boodie not being there, Mac Collins
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: miss today, Age Brown wasn't here right away, and he's
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: still easing in. Like Pop Douglass had some awesome opportunities
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: this summer or this spring.
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's run with it.
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: He's made the most of it. And we talked about chemistry.
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: The big knock last year was that Drake May and
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: Pop Douglas never got on the same page. I think
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: their chemistry looks really improved. Looks really improved this summer.
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: But it's passing camp. It's non padded, it caters to
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: those smaller, shifty, quick wide receivers. Absolutely, it's a setting
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: built up for him to succeed. The rubber is going
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: to meet the road when the pads come on in August.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: But that being said, like that doesn't mean he should
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: just sit back and do nothing. He's doing as much
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: as you could ask him to do at this point,
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: which is good, which is what you want to see.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: I'm not and the fact that him and Drake's chemistry
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: is better is great. I'm just not going to make
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: any grand proclamations about it until we get to the
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: padded practices.
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: So the other difficult part to me with both these guys,
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: I thought they had good camps last year, two impads,
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: so yeah, I mean, I remember writing at the end
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: of the season. I talked to Julian Edelman. I talked
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: to some of the guys that had worked in that
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: McDaniel's slot role, and you know what those guys could
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: do in that And we talked a lot about Diggs
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: potentially being like the real guy there, but we also
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: talked about Pop and Eftin Chisholm potentially doing that as well,
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: And that was right at the end of training camp.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: I wrote that piece at the end of August and
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: it just didn't come to fruition for Douglass in the
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: season the way we thought it would. There's some you know,
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: murmurs I mentioned the Jory Epstein piece earlier of Drake
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: may preferring throwing the bigger guys.
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: Ye know.
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: Romeo Dobbs is the aj Browns, Eli Rariden who will
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: get to in a second. I get that. So I
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: guess I'm just I'm just hesitant to like believe because
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: I don't want to do taekwon again and you know,
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: fall for it again. But this is what's happening, Like,
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: this is what we're seeing out of these practices. Now,
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: yesterday Pop was running what they call a two lane route,
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: which is like a little six yard option, right, so
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: you get to the top of the route at six
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: yards and then you have an inside out option and
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: he kind of bent it inside and Drake put it
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: a little bit too far in front of him and
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: he couldn't make the catch. And like, those are those
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: little flashes of if that's six foot two Romeo Dobbs
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: running that route. Maybe it's not exactly on time where
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: they're catching and running into the football, but is it
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: cot know, is is it a catch going down to
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: the ground that he at least brings in for a
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: six seven yard game, whereas with Pop Douglas that ends
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: up being off his hand if you want to call
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: it a drop a drop because he just doesn't have
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: that catch radius. But there's times where he just shakes
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: guys at the top of the route that we're talked
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: about earlier. It's just an element that other guys can't
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: bring to the table, and he does it consistently. And
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: with Chisholm, is Chisholm the one question, you know, just
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: to further this point, I thought the same thing with
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: Chishom last summer. He's kind of stuck in the middle,
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: Like he's a classic Baseball four a player where he's
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: too good for the twos, but he might not be
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: quite good enough for the ones. And he's right in
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: the middle of that. Is he a guy? Is he
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: not a guy? But every single time they you know,
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: get out there and they get between the lines and
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: these practices after Chishom's showing up. Now it might be
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: backups on backups, he might be balls from Tommy DeVito
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: and not Drake May. But yesterday he kind of went
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: on a run where he had like three catches in
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: the span of four five throws and was sort of
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: eating there in the slot, if you will. So two
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: guys that have done what they can. Whether we believe
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: in them and.
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: Their role and all that stuff is, we can only
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: say we've seen so far. So far, they've done well.
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: I'm just not willing to project forward on it.
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: Okay, So back to some of the new additions in
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: the veterans. Regigillium. I really like how Regigillium moves. I
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: really like his his gait. He's got like longer strides.
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: He can open up his strides. When you think of
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: traditional full backs like a James Devlin or a Yakub Johnson,
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: like they they're short striders because they're usually small, you know,
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: short compact like stout kind of guys. You know, you
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: mentioned brock Lampi's measurements earlier. Was it's six feet two fifty. Yeah,
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: Regie Gilliam's got a little bit more tight end to
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: him than those guys did. Watching him run seams, even
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: on routes against air, I don't see a whole lot
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: of difference between a tight end running that route and Regigillium.
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: Maybe body control a little bit, but just in in
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: terms of the stride length and the speed the Patriots
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: obviously it's a passing camp, so they're not going to
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: put twenty one personnel under center and run the ball
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: down the defensive throat when there's no pads on. But
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: so they moved to kill him around a little bit. Yesterday.
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: He was the one guy in the backfield a couple times,
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: maybe as like a pseudo personal protector, and leak him
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: out into the flats. He was flexed out a few
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: times out wide and some empty stuff, you know, classic
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: McDaniels inverting the formation with the big guys outside and
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: the receivers on the inside. Just feels like there's some
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: Kyle Uschecki Neiss where it's like a little bit more
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: than that battering ram fullback, where they can move him
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: around and maybe have some fun with him in the
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: passing game.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, he talked about that. I don't think it
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: was his introductory press conference, but at some point we
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: talked to him about thinking that he's more untapped as
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: as a ball carrier as a pass catcher. Was a
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: running back in college. He didn't move to full back
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: until he was already in college. So yeah, he moves well.
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: Drake seems to like throwing ball to him. And I
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: do think we are gonna I don't think we're gonna
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: see it. He's an upgrade certainly over Jack Westover, but
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: I don't think we're gonna see him use just the
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: way James Devlin and Yakob Johnson re used. I think
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: there's gonna be more to it. If you remember going back,
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: they at the end of it was like going to
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: the pandemic. McDaniels was trying to make the h back.
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: I think remember dan Vin Tally was here, yes, and
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: they had another guy who was that mold. They don't
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: remember who it was, but they spent a couple of
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: years the tail end of McDaniel's last ten you're trying
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: to make the h back work, and it's just injuries
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: and a bunch of re It just never Dalton Kean.
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: They draft Dalton Kean. It just never kind of worked out.
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: And I don't think Gilliam's a full h back either.
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: He's a good player. I think he can do the
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: James Devlin Yakob Johnson stuff. I just think they're going
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: to try to add to that role rather than change
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: that role.
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just exciting to see a full back, not
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: only because of his athleticism as a receiver, but also
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: thinking about his athletics him as a blocker, like how
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: that can translate to him being a little bit more
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: out in space and on the move as a lead blocker.
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: So it's not just so much, you know, I listen,
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: I love full back leader, iso or whatever you want
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: to call it as much as the next was your
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: favorite player, I told him power is my favor player,
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: but you could do two back power technically with.
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: Well did he say, like, if we're going to do that,
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: we need to get a full back?
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: He might have.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: That was the whole I wrote that off. He definitely
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: said that.
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: He might have said that. And you know, back on backer,
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: right the full back goes through the aar B gap
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: right up to the linebacker and we have a car
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: crash right there. And I love that just as much
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: as the next guy. But when you have a full
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: back that can do some things in space and get
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: to some different angles and different levels of the defense,
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: that just kind of expands what you can do with
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: a guy like that. And you saw the Bills do
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: that a little bit with Reggie Gilliam last year. So
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: exciting to see that. Excited to see some of the
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: formations that McDaniel's the inverted formations I was talking about. Yeah,
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: that's classic McDaniel's undress the defense, you know, put the
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: full back there. If he's matched by a corner, it's
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: most likely some sort of zone coverage. If he's matched
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: by a linebacker, it's most likely man and man. Just
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: these little coverage tells and indicators that they can give
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: the quarterback. Reggie gilliam I am going to continue to
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: bang the table that that guy is going to be
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: a big impact play for him. Excited to see more
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: of him. Last one on an offense, and then we'll
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: move over to the defense. Eli Raridon, I don't want
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: to use the word underwhelmed because it's a rookie and
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: a not early, way too early for that word. Yesterday
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: was the first day though that I felt like I
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: really saw a flash. He caught that patch from Tommy DeVito,
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: a crossing route. De Vito stepped through the middle of
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: the pocket. Is really nice to throw by Devitovit a
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: nice day. Yeah, he kind of like did the drake
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: may through the third window or he sort of three
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: or quarters arm release wise, He's stepping through the pocket,
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: Rareden pulled away from the safety. I'm sorry, I don't
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: remember who the safety was that it was covering him,
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: but I wanted to say Pettis, but I was so
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: first time has some had had some trouble catching the
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: ball at times. Yesterday he had one bobble and one drop.
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: I think he had a drop in the first practice
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: as well. Some rookie growing pains there for Rariden, And
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: this is one thing that I was big on when
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: they drafted him, and going back to the Julian Hill injury,
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: it's a lot to ask of young tight ends to
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: play a lot right out of the gate in the
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: NFL Situationally, it's one thing like if they think he's
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: gonna be a pretty good pass catcher, as they probably
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: should based off his skill set, Okay, you want to
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: play him in certain packages, certain third down looks, things
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: like that. Fine, But asking a tight end as a
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: rookie that was especially one draft in the third round.
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: We're not talking about Tyler Warren here. To then go
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: in and play forty forty five percent of the snaps
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: is a big undertaking, haven't. I wouldn't use the word underwhelmed.
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: I just have not been blown away yet by Eli
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: Roden to the point where I feel like this is
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: going to be a rookie impact type of player. Would
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: have been your first impressions of him when we.
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: Really see him in the first ota, he seemed kind
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: of buried on the depth chart, So maybe that's part
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: of it. Maybe yesterday was the first real look at him,
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: which it's good. He's moving and outside of hill injury,
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: like we saw, we saw west Over more than him
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: in the first when we saw him more than west
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: Over yesterday. So yeah, I just haven't seen a lot really. Yeah,
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: I wouldn't say I'm underwhelmed. They just need to see more.
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I hope that there's I hope that drops he's
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: that he's having a little bit that I've seen like
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: some double catches and things like that. Maybe that's just
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: comfort level, you know, with the offense and he's not
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: totally sure out there and so he's having a little
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: bit of those inconsistencies. So I'd like to see a
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: little bit more out of him. Let's moving over to
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: the defense. My biggest concern and I wanted to talk
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: a little bit more about a guy we mentioned earlier
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: in the show as well. The edge position right now,
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: to me is the clear, glaring potential Achilles heel of
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: this football team. Are they gonna have enough health and
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: pass rush off the edge? I haven't gotten the chance.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: He asked a questquestion. There's been other questions to be asked. Obviously,
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: Rabel's had some stuff going on, Christian Gonzalez's contract, AJ
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: Brown trade. Nobody has asked Rabel yet what the heck
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: is going on with gay backets, which I think is
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: easily one of the biggest stories now that the other
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: things have kind of settled down a little bit. Contract
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: but it's not the biggest, but I would say it's
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: the second biggest, because this is a guy that you
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: drafted in the second round that we all really really liked,
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: and I still really really liked the player in the
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: skill set, but you had that was the one guy
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: that had some path to play this year, and you
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: kind of needed him to hit right and you needed
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: him to play. We did not see him at rookie
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: Mini caamp. He has not been at either OTA practice
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: so far. There's no indication that he's going to be
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: out there next week at Mini camp. I can sort
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: of guess at what's going on? And there's two theories,
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: but I don't want to guess. I would like to know,
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: and no one's asked the question yet, So hopefully we
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: get that answered next week from Mike Rabel is a
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: second round pick contract negotiation? Is it the hamstring that
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: you know had popped up for him in the pre
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: draft process? Is it something else? Like why is gay
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: Bacus not on the field, because it's a valuable time.
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: It's a valuable time for a rookie player to be
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: out there right now, and getting behind the eight ball
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: as a rookie is never a good thing. It's it's
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: really hard to get on the moving train once you're behind.
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: So gay Bacus's health, Harold Andry's health, I guess you
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: put that in there too.
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: I mean I think, yeah, the two of them, they
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: just they don't have a lot of depth on the
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: edge right now, and it falls out pretty quickly. Draymond
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: Jones to find complimentary player. Elijah Ponder popped a little
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: bit as UDFA last year, but that was in like
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: two hundred snaps and then it really falls off. So
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: they need one of Landry Orakis to be an impact
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: player this year. Ideally, both, but they really like they
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: kind of can't get by without one of those guys
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: on the edge anyway, with that one of those guys
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: being an impact player. Landry technically could be missing because
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: he's a veteran. We'll find out more next week, but
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: like that's somebody coming off an injury. We know was
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: rehabbing as recently as March and then yet Akis had
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: the hamstring before the draft. He missed the combine, so
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: we don't know for sure. But again you can put
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: two and two together. Even when Travon Henderson had the
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: contract issues last year, because a still isn't signed. But
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: even when Traveon Henderson had the contract issues last year,
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: he still took part in all I.
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: Mean, Caleb Lomo hasn't Simon. He's taking part in all
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: of this. So this is this to me, it's concerning.
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: I hate to speculate. This to me feels more injury
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: related than contract related. Yes, the hope is is that
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: it's this ham string, because hamstrings, even though they linger,
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: it's not like something structurally wrong with him, Like he
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: just has a bum hamstring and it will get better
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: over time. But who knows what's going on there? But
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: Akis was a big part of this puzzle him. He
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: was a guy that you got a little bit later,
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: you know, in the in the draft, and like a
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: true day one impact player usually goes, but it was
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: because of the depth of the class at the position
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: that in other years, if it's not health related, that
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: his gay back is a top forty pick based off
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: of just depth and the edge class. He gets pushed down,
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: like you thought this guy was going to come in
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: and maybe be a Day one starter on your defensive line,
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: and he's just not out there. He wasn't out hasn't
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: been out there all spring. So I think that's really massive.
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: We mentioned Keevon Thibodeau, is it Thibodau Thibodeau earlier on
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: in the show. I watched some of his his pressures today.
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: I really like how he plays. I think he plays
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: the way the Patriots want their edge guys to play.
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: Six four, two fifty five fits that mold exactly of
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: what they typically go for. Has a motor to him,
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: convert speed to power, has a nice like swipe rip
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: move that he can use as a finisher. He can
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: reduce inside a little bit if you want to do
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: that with him. I haven't watched a ton of his
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: run defense tape yet. I will, but his run defense
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: grades are all really really good. Yeah, he looks like
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: the type of guy that they would target that The
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: hold up to me with him is that he's playing
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: this year on his fifth year option, So he's not cheap.
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: He's a fourteen point seven million dollar.
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: Player, fair, and they've spent a lot of money safe.
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: That's my point. It's like, this isn't if he was
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: on the fourth year of his rookie contract and we
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: were still in that before the money kicks in period,
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: then I'd feel a little bit differently. But he is
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: on his fifth year this season. He's going to be
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: a free agent at the end of the season or
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: next offseason, so he's one more year left out.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: I know when like budgeting it in, this doesn't apply
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: because it's not one verse the other. But Steelers just
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: paid Nick Herbig twenty five million dollars a year. Yeah,
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: If Herberg's getting twenty five million, isn't Thibodaux at fourteen
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: like great value.
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: It's not so much that I'm concerned about the it's
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: the total money. I'm just it's like, how much more
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: money can we realistically expect them to sink into the ross.
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: I guess you have to have edge rushers though, and
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: they just might not have the bodies.
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and so then I also saw that Jordan ran On,
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: who's like the Mike re East of the Giants worst
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: for ESPN. He said earlier on in the offseason, they
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: were looking for a second round pick.
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: Yeah, well that seems pretty Eels were looking for first
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: and I know.
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: For but win a second round pick, se if that's
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: what it is.
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: No, but again, I go back to I'm gonna read
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: you the Giants wide receiver depth chart real quickly.
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: So you want to include Keishaan Booty in the deal?
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: And Katty used that as sweetener.
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: Here's Giants wide receiver depth chart. Malik Neighbors, very good player,
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: but you see him running the other day running, Yes,
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: didn't look good. Malik Neighbors, Darius Slayton's fine, Calvin Austin,
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: Malachi Fields, Darnell Mooney. Now we start getting silly Juju
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: Smith Schuster.
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: Yes, they just signed off the street.
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: Odell Beckham, Isaiah Hodgens, Braxton Burrios, Jalen Hyatt, bo Collin,
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: Xavier Gibson, Ryan Miller Dalen Cambria. I don't even know
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: who that last guy is, So I don't know, Evan,
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: You tell me if this is a team that is
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: desperate at receiver in the same day. In the same
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: day they signed twenty nine year old Juju Smith Schuster,
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: thirty year old Braxton Barrios, thirty three year old Odell Beckham.
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: That trio in twenty twenty five combined for thirty nine
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: catches for three hundred and eighty two yards. Kayshawn Boody
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: alone had six fewer catches in two hundred more yards.
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: So like Booty and for what it's worth, ESPN did
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: a piece with their insiders on like hypothetical trades, and
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: we know these guys, Yeah, they're coming up with ideas,
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: but they know they know a thing or two. They're informed, right, Yeah,
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: So they had four hypothetical trades for cave On Thibodeaux.
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: Jeremy Fowler had the Saints giving up a third, which
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: is a lot. Dan Graziano had the Patriots giving up
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: a fifth. These are all twenty twenty seven picks. Kansas
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: City Ben Solak had them giving up a twenty seven
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: to fourth and the Rams are on here, but that's
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: not gonna happen now. Probably, I guess we shouldn't count
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: for rams.
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: So we're talking about a middle round pick somewhere between
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: the third and the fourth round. I would, right, does.
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: Kaishan Boody and a fifth get it done? Because none
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: of these include players just and this was put out last,
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: This was put out a week ago. Uh may does
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: Kayshawn Boody and a fifth get If you're the Giants
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: and it's a fourth or Kaishan Booty in a fifth,
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: which deal would you rather do?
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: If you're the Giants?
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: Yeah? If the two best on the table are a
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: fourth or Kayshawan Booty in a fifth.
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: Probably I don't know, Probably Kashawan Boody in.
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: The fifth, it's a third or Kaishan Booty in a
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: fifth the third? Okay, fair enough? So if there's no
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: day to pick on the table and Jeremy Faller had floated,
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: the Patriots were a sleeper for Thibodeau, yep like. And
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: if somebody offers a third, fine, so beat I don't
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: think he's worth a third. I think he's worth less
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: than that.
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: So Dalen Phillips for a third, right, right? I was
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: at the trade Den, I.
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: Was gonna say, if he's worth a third, I'd rather
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: trade the third for Josh Sweat than Kayvon Thibodeau. If
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: you can get Josh redfurther, I think it's probably if
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: that's what Phillips is worth, that's what Sweat's worth.
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: So it's a better player than both those guys, I think. Okay,
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: But yeah with with Thibodeau, I I just like I
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: think he plays the position the way they want him
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: to be played. I also thought he was pretty productive
- 1:45:06Speaker 2: on some of the stunt schemes and stuff like that
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: that they asked him to do, like all these different
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: things like Patrid stunt a lot. He's a four to
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: three n by nature, plays more with his hand in
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: the dirt. He's a guy that you know, can move
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: around a little bit, but he's got a good motor
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: to him. He's got good power, Like these are all
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: Patriot boxes that we're checking here, and.
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: By the way he plays out on top of that,
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: Shane Bowen was his DC is now here on the
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: coaching staff, and Ryan Cowden was there with him.
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: So the one element of the trade is not necessarily
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: the play style on the player. I like although the
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: you know, to go back to the under the hood
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: nerd numbers, they dropped off a little bit for him
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: last year. He only had about eleven percent pressure rate
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: last year, which was like fiftieth in the NFL amongst
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: ed rushers.
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: So this is the other thing with Kevon Thibodau. His production.
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: He had eleven and a half sacks two years ago.
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: That dropped to five and a half two years ago
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: and then two and a half last year.
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: So the question is its order, Similar to the aj
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: Brown thing, where can the Giants realistically take Abdull Carter,
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: Brian Burns, rvel Ree and cave On Thibodeau all to
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: camp and like keep all four of those guys happy.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: I mean they could.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: I mean, I know rvel Reese has really thought of
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: as more of like a hybrid like off balls edg rusher,
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: but I think that they want him to play edge.
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: Brian Burns probably isn't there long term, but he's at
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: least there for this year. So Keveon Thibodeaux at best
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: is the third and a half if you want it,
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: whatever you want to cal Reese maybe the fourth guy.
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: It's also similar to to Kaishan booty situation, he's on
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: an expiring contract. Yeah, I guess their first round pick
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: on edge rushers each of the last two years. A.
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: You're gonna do that and THEID and trade for right,
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: So you can do all that in pay Thibodeaux.
- 1:46:43Speaker 14: Right.
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: So the only element of the trade I don't like
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: from a Patriots perspective is that he's expensive, like a
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: fourteen point seven million dollar fully guaranteed fifth year, and
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: then he's a free agent, so it's not it's not
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: my money, so I don't necessarily right. But in terms
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: of talking about it realistically, after the investment that they
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: just made it a Brown, can they budget giving Christian
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: Gonzales a contract extension, trading for aj Brown, trading for
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: Kveon Thibodeau, doing all of this all right now? It
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: seems it would be a lot and kudos to them
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: if they do it, but.
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: It would be I mean, if they do it, they're
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: and not that Thibodeau is such an unbelievable player, but
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: in terms of just what he does for what their
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: biggest weakness is. I'll go back to where we started
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: the show at caveon Thibodau to this roster are they
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: the best team in the AFC.
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, I don't really think they have, not much
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: question about that. Yeah, so you know, Draymond Jones on
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: one side, Thibodeau on the other.
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: You hope that gave back you get from telling or
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: Acus if you can get like seventy percent from one
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: of those guys your third guy. Yeah you know, now
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: you have uh sheez ponder back as your fourth guy.
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: And yeah, no, that would be because and the cell
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: the Thibodau's easy, Like could he come here? If he
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: came here, he could I think he could have a
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: better version of the season Calebon chase On had.
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: Or at least similar And it's a more thought of player,
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: right like as a guy that had production earlier before
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: the Giants got crowded on the defensive front. If he
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: comes in here and he has eight sacks and forty
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: to fifty pressures on a contract year, you're looking at
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: somebody that's probably going to get paid on a second contract.
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: And chase On wasn't twenty million something. Yeah, chase On
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: wasn't thought of that way in the league anymore. He
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: was also a former first round pick, but but not
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: he didn't have the takeoff that that Thibodeau dead all right,
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: So that's edge Rusher. I really would like to know
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: the answer to the gay back is thing. Might have
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: to end up, might have to ask it myself out.
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: I was gonna say, you have the access.
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: I do have the ability. Uh Okay. Corey Durden gave
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: quite the press conference I would say yesterday where he
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: sounded pretty confident that in in Corey Durden, he sounded
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: like he was ready to go, said his goal was
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: to like make the Pro Bowl. He had some lofty
- 1:49:04Speaker 2: conversations out at the podium yesterday. Are you buying or
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: selling a your whatever? Leap? This is for Corey Durden
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: And how confident are you right now? And Corey Durton,
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: I like, because he's the third guy, it's him borrowmore
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: Milton Williams.
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: I mean, look, we didn't expect much from Tonga last
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: year and look what he became now. I don't know
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: that Dirden has the anchor the Tonga.
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: He's not the gap plug.
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: I think he can give you some he can give
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: you what Tonga gave you in the past game. And
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: he can be somebody that can play on those intermediate
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: towns because He's not a liability against the run by
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: any means, but I don't think he's that true gap
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: eater that talk. I think he can be a good,
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: useful player, but I don't know that he's going to
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: fully replace Tonga. That's where you look at one of
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: these other nose tackles to step up. I still like
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: t One.
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: I think he preferred to him.
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: I still like Travis Shaw. I'm intrigued by did we
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: talk about Travis Shaw at all?
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: Do you know who Travish is?
- 1:50:02Speaker 6: Well?
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: I know now I'm making sure the baseball player. Yeah,
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: former Red Sox mayor of ding Dong City.
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: I'm always interested in these guys. Travis Shaw coming out
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: of high school in North Carolina, five star recruit, ninety
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: eight raiding that's out of one hundred. But they'll give
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: guys like one, two, one or three, sometimes ninety eight
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: rating by twenty four to seven. Yes, the twelfth ranked
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: recruit in the country. He was the fifth ranked defensive
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: lineman behind Walter Nolan, mikel Williams, Shamar Stewart. I actually
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: don't know who this other guy is. Gabriel Brownlow Dindy
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: it's probably he must still be in college. Yeah, he's
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: at South Carolina. But was like a legit recruit. I remember,
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: I like sort of remember him being a big deal
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: when he committed to UNC. He was a big time
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: recruit for them. Didn't pan out Dallas some injuries, went
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: to Texas last year, finally played a little bit more.
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: It's that, hey, there's something that wasn't tapped into here,
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: and was it the Saity situation or is there something
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: else preventing it? But like those guys intrigue me, he
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: has the size, it's a position to need. He is
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: somebody I will be watching at a training camp.
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: Okay, so on Corey Durden. I really like him as
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: a as a true shade, like a one tech in
- 1:51:17Speaker 2: the A gap. He's not the space eater that Tonga is.
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: He's not the wide body that Tonga is. But I
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: like the player. He was a little that press conference yesterday.
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: I was like, Okay, let's right's let's slow down maybe
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: a little bit, uh, you know, Vince Wolffork. But the
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: player in general, I we'll see, but I'm with you,
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: you know, whether it's one of these guys like Travis Shaw,
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: Lenny t got his hands on a couple of passes yesterday.
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: You know, Leonard Taylor, him stepping up Joshua Farmer maybe
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: having a year or two leap, if you want to
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: call it that. They need some semblance of depth there
- 1:51:53Speaker 2: behind Barmore and Williams. I think Turdin is gonna be Tonga,
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: like he's gonna play those snaps that Tonga left behind.
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: But behind that, I'm looking to see some of those
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: guys pop. He did not practice yesterday, and I do
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: think that he might have left the practice that we
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: were at last week early, but just moving on from
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: the defensive line, kJ Britt feels like a pretty big
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: X factor to me depth wise. On his defense. I
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: liked what I saw in the first practice. He got
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: his hands on one pass, but broke up a pass
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: to Arden. I think it was coming over the middle
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: of the field. But he's that Jack Gibbons third linebacker
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: that in a pinch is gonna play if Robert Splain
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: or Christianellis is hurt play on special teams. It's a
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: sneaky important role from depth standpoint, And at least he
- 1:52:41Speaker 2: didn't practice yesterday, so I can't say that I have
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: seen a ton, But the first practice I was like, Okay,
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: this guy you know passes the eye test for me
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: in that spot.
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: Yeah, more athletic, I would say, than Gibbons. He he
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: feels like the favorite from that next group to get
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: that other spot. Yeah, yesterday it was Chad Muma. A
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: lot that was up up without him. Maybe Mum is
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: the fourth guy, but you know, you move on, I
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: think is going to make the team for special teams.
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: So you're looking at the guys who you know we're
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: going to be here first.
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: Yeah, because you move on from Gibbons to Vay and
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: Marte Mopu. Yeah, so you basically gutted your depth at
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: linebacker and you're looking for guys like kJ Britt Muma,
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: those types of players.
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: Speaking of the guy from UH Mapu real quick, did
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: you see who was getting the UH personal protector snaps
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: yesterday and the punt team?
- 1:53:29Speaker 2: The next guy I think on this list they were
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: a couple. Well, one of them was Mike Brown.
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: One of them was Mike Brown. Yes, I bring this
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: up because it's a good way to kind of tell
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: who might make the team. Yeah, it was Mike Brown,
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: it was Brock Lampy, and it was Peter Manuma.
- 1:53:44Speaker 2: So Mike Brown is the next and last one on
- 1:53:48Speaker 2: my list here perfect timing, really making a push to
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: me early in the spring. It's early, I get that,
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: but playing a lot as the third safety, playing a
- 1:53:57Speaker 2: lot of different roles on special teams, maybe in a
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: direct competition right now, it feels like with del Pettis
- 1:54:03Speaker 2: to be like the true third safety, but he's a
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: little bit bigger than del Pettis is and like can
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: be a little bit more of that natural big nickel
- 1:54:10Speaker 2: spot if they do want to play him in three
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: safety packages with Byered and with Craig Woodson. Mike Brown
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: has has caught my eye a couple of times. Like
- 1:54:18Speaker 2: his size, he covers pretty well for his safety plays
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: on special teams. This is a guy that I didn't
- 1:54:25Speaker 2: know a whole lot about going into it. Admittedly, I
- 1:54:28Speaker 2: wasn't sure if he was going to make the roster
- 1:54:29Speaker 2: or not. Now I kind of feel like he's pushing
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: pretty hard to make the team. You know, we'll see
- 1:54:34Speaker 2: how it ends up in August, but as of today,
- 1:54:36Speaker 2: I would probably have Mike Brown on a fifty three
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: man roster projection.
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: I would have him on. I wonder if they're you know,
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: the path for him is kind of similar to Jalen Hawkins,
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: the guy that played some defense but was mostly a
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: special teams player. Come He's here, wins his way onto
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: the roster with special teams and then ends up growing
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: into a bigger defensive role as things go on.
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, I think that's more than fair. So
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: that those are my developing thoughts on the team. The
- 1:55:00Speaker 2: last one that I didn't really I wrote it down
- 1:55:03Speaker 2: initially and I crossed it off because it's really not
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: a great thought or take. But just the third running
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: back thing just feels like we're not going to know
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: until the pads come on. It's been a lot of
- 1:55:13Speaker 2: Lampy the third running back. You're laruson?
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: You mean Larson yet, But like yesterday, we saw Montgomery
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: a little bit for a second, we saw Terrell Jennings
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: for a second, we saw mostly Lamb Larrison. I'd say
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: it's taking the bulk of it, but I just don't
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: feel like that's I feel like we're too far away
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: from deciding that that kind of it's true kind of
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: goes hand in hand with like Linemen, and you got
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: to see the pads on to really.
- 1:55:36Speaker 2: Know yeah, even preseason. Like there's one thing the preseason games,
- 1:55:39Speaker 2: because you're tackling to the ground in the preseason.
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: Well remember not the preseason. It's usually the guy that
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: gets the bulk that isn't making the team. Yeah, that's
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: because they're not worried about that that guy get to
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: beat up.
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: Yeah that's fair.
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: Shout out Ralph Webb.
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: All right, we have five more minutes just to I'll
- 1:55:53Speaker 2: read off a couple of emails that are on the
- 1:55:55Speaker 2: shorter side. Uh so this one was a small dig
- 1:55:58Speaker 2: at me he wants to take. He said, I spent
- 1:56:01Speaker 2: too much time around Bill's fans at Ithaca, and he
- 1:56:04Speaker 2: told me to swap the Labats for a narroganssett. Right,
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: that's how you say it. Yeah, so you also went
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: to Ithaca.
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: So I also went to Ithaca, and that's part of
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: why I because I had to spend time with Bills fans.
- 1:56:15Speaker 2: So maybe you had the opposite effect, but we spent
- 1:56:18Speaker 2: time with the same people. That's for some of it. Yeah,
- 1:56:21Speaker 2: that's yeah. But I my my infatuation with the Bills
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: is not the Bills. It's really just it's just a
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: quarter of the challenge. Yeah, I disrespect the quarterback.
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: I cannot wait until he goes to Los Angeles.
- 1:56:34Speaker 2: This email is from David and Bethlehem. He emailed it
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: and said about his wife's birthday. So, my lovely wife's
- 1:56:43Speaker 2: birthday is February thirteenth, which is a double whammy because
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: obviously Valentine's Day is the fourteenth. This year, the super
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: Bowl is on Valentine's Day. So first world problem. Admittedly
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: we're not smallest violin, but let's play it out the Patriots,
- 1:56:57Speaker 2: just Scott aj Brown, We're on a high right now.
- 1:56:59Speaker 2: If the Ptriots make the super Bowl, that means that
- 1:57:01Speaker 2: I'm going to spend the entire week in Los Angeles.
- 1:57:05Speaker 2: When Jess's birthday is on February thirteenth, the day before
- 1:57:08Speaker 2: the super Bowl, you might have to fly her out.
- 1:57:11Speaker 2: So I told her. I told her, I was like,
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: this is you know, my adopted city. It's your birthday.
- 1:57:16Speaker 2: Maybe they're in the super Bowl. We're getting way ahead
- 1:57:18Speaker 2: of ourselves, but maybe they are. Like that's a that
- 1:57:20Speaker 2: feels like you need to come, but not what you.
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: Could do is plan A. There's no way Jess listens
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: to the show. I don't want to ruin a surprise
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: plan like a birthday, Valentine's Day weekend trip to Los Angeles,
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: and then that's already booked, and then oh, I have.
- 1:57:37Speaker 3: To do.
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: I gotta work dinner Saturday night at a nice restaurant.
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: You have to work till Sunday. Anyway, right, that kind
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: of thing.
- 1:57:45Speaker 2: That's fair. Maybe that's that that's fair. I would have
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: pretty much all day Saturday. We went to Alcatraz in
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: San Francisco on Saturday before ago.
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: We had the we had the sports broadcast.
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: Yeah, so we we did. Uh, we did have some
- 1:58:00Speaker 2: fun on the Saturday before the super Bowl, So maybe
- 1:58:02Speaker 2: we can dodge that. I'm not going to read the
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: whole email from David about his wife's fortieth birthday. Sounded
- 1:58:07Speaker 2: like it was a bad time. But that was that
- 1:58:10Speaker 2: was that one. There's one more I wanted to get
- 1:58:12Speaker 2: to and now I, oh, this is this one. Since
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: they someone picked on me about the bills, I'm gonna
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: pick on you a little bit. We'll end on this one.
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: So this is from Darius and Louisville. And he says
- 1:58:22Speaker 2: that he loves listening to you, specifically Alice. Yeah, and
- 1:58:25Speaker 2: he listens to you on all your podcasts. But he
- 1:58:28Speaker 2: says that you know he does hear you give some
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: of the same takes. I change it up, And I
- 1:58:34Speaker 2: tell you the reason why I brought this up is
- 1:58:36Speaker 2: not to pick on you. It was actually because I
- 1:58:38Speaker 2: bring this up to you all the time that I
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: have no idea how you do like ten different podcasts
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: and and keep it fresh.
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: I try to change it up. This time of year
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: is probably harder than like in season in that regard,
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: but it's different hosts, so I kind of lean on
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: the host to put me in different spots. You Brian Hines,
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: Matt Dollops her own battle and five if you count
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: the one David Andrews, that's just really me. I'm not
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: giving takes on that.
- 1:59:06Speaker 2: And that's also in season, right, yeah, that's.
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: Only in season. And then the call like the callers
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: and emailers asking and commenters asking different questions things so
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: that so I try to change it up the best
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: I could. Big picture things are obviously going to be
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: the same, but I do try and even if it
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: is the same take, to try to change the the
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: the presentation. The real thing is like if you listen,
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: like if news happened thought into this, I mean, this
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: is my day to day if you listen to the
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: first show, you kind of whatever it is, and it's
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: different every week depending on when news happens, like you'll
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: get things coming out in real time. But if you
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: listen to the last one, I do like you hear
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: the take fully flushed out, and there could be something
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: where like during the season, we do this show on Thursday.
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: Sometimes yeah, and you'll say something, so I'll have done
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: a show earlier in the week, then I do this.
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: Then you maybe say something I even thought of, and
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: then I bring it to Brian and me and Brian
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: talk about it on Patriots Me.
- 2:00:00Speaker 2: You're something like you steal my takes.
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: I just make it one long show.
- 2:00:04Speaker 10: You're gonna get a super comp of all your takes
- 2:00:06Speaker 10: on all your shows.
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: Somebody somebody referred to it once between like you doll
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: of Brian Kadlick as the Alex Barth Cinematic Universe.
- 2:00:17Speaker 2: It's yeah, it's unbelievable.
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: Use kind of that.
- 2:00:22Speaker 2: He's not no ego whatsoever with that comparison with the
- 2:00:27Speaker 2: We have two shows that I am very fortunate to
- 2:00:30Speaker 2: be a part of here and unfiltered in this show,
- 2:00:32Speaker 2: and I feel like I repeat myself on those two shows.
- 2:00:34Speaker 2: This guy has like a hundred, Like imagine that, Like
- 2:00:37Speaker 2: it's just juggling a million of them. I feel like
- 2:00:40Speaker 2: I'm saying the same things over and over again. I'm
- 2:00:42Speaker 2: just the two shows that I'm on, and I'm on
- 2:00:45Speaker 2: the p PU. It's me, it's Paul, it's Fred, it's Alex,
- 2:00:48Speaker 2: like it's the whole crew.
- 2:00:49Speaker 1: So it's the question I get the most is how
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: do I avoid repeating myself across shows? And it's not easy,
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: but I try my best. I guess I gotta do better,
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: but I try my best.
- 2:00:57Speaker 2: All Right, we'll end it there, we're already over anyways.
- 2:01:01Speaker 2: Next week show announcement. Next week, we're going from four
- 2:01:05Speaker 2: to six after Patriots second day of Mini camp, right,
- 2:01:10Speaker 2: that will be the second day mini camps Tuesday, Wednesday Thursday,
- 2:01:13Speaker 2: So Catch twenty two will be four to six, but
- 2:01:15Speaker 2: also be up on YouTube and Apple podcasts and Spotify
- 2:01:19Speaker 2: and all those other places if you're not able to
- 2:01:21Speaker 2: listen live when the show is happening on Wednesday, but
- 2:01:25Speaker 2: four to six on Wednesday to accommodate practice so that
- 2:01:28Speaker 2: Alex and I can go watch practice, and then we'll
- 2:01:30Speaker 2: talk about the two days that we've seen so far.
- 2:01:33Speaker 2: Peu's schedule tomorrow is at noon, same time as normal,
- 2:01:37Speaker 2: twelve to two. We'll update you guys tomorrow on PU
- 2:01:41Speaker 2: about next week for that show as well, but just
- 2:01:43Speaker 2: bear with us. It's a lot going on. There's mini
- 2:01:46Speaker 2: camp next week with the team, then there's obviously FIFA
- 2:01:49Speaker 2: in the World Cup is around, so there's a lot
- 2:01:51Speaker 2: to shuffle over the next couple of weeks, but we'll
- 2:01:54Speaker 2: keep you guys updated. Thanks so much for watching, Thanks
- 2:01:56Speaker 2: so much for listening, and we'll see you next week.
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
