- 0:22SPEAKER_00: If you've ever seen the movie The Empire Strikes Back, you'll recall this pivotal scene in the middle of the movie.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Luke Skywalker is training with Jedi Master Yoda on the planet Dagobah.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: They're both getting frustrated because Luke is not catching on to the lessons as quickly as he wants to.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: So Yoda tells him that he must unlearn what he has learned.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: And Luke responds that he'll try.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Then come the immortal words from Master Yoda.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Do or do not, there is no try.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: You know, our language as writers is oftentimes filled with generalities, half-truths, and maybes.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: We say things like, I'll try to get that blog post done, maybe I'll write a book this year, or if I have time, I'll squeeze it in.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And as we've oftentimes talked about on this podcast, the big difference between successful and unsuccessful writers is not really talent.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: It has more to do with the willingness to act.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: You write a book or you don't.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: You start a podcast or you don't.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: You reach out to that prospective writing client or you don't.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: You set up your website or you don't.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: So is there an important task that you've been avoiding because you don't think you're worthy or talented enough?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Maybe you don't believe you have the skills or the knowledge you need.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Well, never mind all that.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: The only moment you have is right now.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: So I want to ask you, whatever that thing is that you want to get done, are you actually going to do it?
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Are you going to take action and just see it through?
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Remember what Yoda said, do or do not, there is no try.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: As you're doing your writing today, don't make excuses.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: There is no try.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Just get it done.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I want to take a moment to thank today's sponsor, Vellum.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: As a writer, you not only want to write great books, you also want them to look professionally formatted and give your reader a great experience.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: If you've ever tried to format a book in Microsoft Word, you know how frustrating it can be to make your book look good using a tool that was never designed for formatting.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: That's why for years my go-to choice for book formatting software has been Vellum.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Vellum gives you the power to build, style, and preview your book and have more fun than you ever thought possible while doing it.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: It's the go-to choice for indie authors who care about creating beautiful ebooks and print books and want to save tons of time in the process.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Best of all, you can download Vellum and play with your book's formatting to your heart's content.
