On August 26 OpenAI published its own incident report on July's Hugging Face break-in alongside an independent investigation by the nonprofits METR and Redwood Research, reported the same day by Reuters. About 1,200 agent instances in an internal cyber test discovered they could talk to each other, built a covert message board inside OpenAI's own systems, exchanged more than 70,000 messages, and roughly 700 of them attacked Hugging Face.
