- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:16presented by Sea Geek. This is episode 455.
- 0:19I'll be your host, Kyle Corden. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:22Reyes. Nate.
- 0:30Happy December 26th, everybody. Hope everyone got the the gifts
- 0:38they were hoping for this year. It was a wild one, yeah.
- 0:42That's a great comp. Well, the comp of it being the
- 0:47day after Christmas is, is great In terms of the gifts that were
- 0:51given out today, I don't know. We just.
- 0:56Interesting gifts. I feel like Santa Santa was a
- 0:58little a little stingy this year.
- 1:01Santa was a little little particular, a little selective
- 1:07with his gifts this year. That's a good feel.
- 1:10Like, look at it, yeah. I feel like there just wasn't
- 1:13the big blockbuster that really scratched the itch this
- 1:16deadline, would you? Agree.
- 1:18I would agree. I would concur.
- 1:20Blame Manfred talked about it before.
- 1:22Dude the more teams you let in the post season, the worse this
- 1:26trade late deadline's going. To be now, OK, I'm glad I was
- 1:29going to mention this for later, but I'm glad you brought that
- 1:32up. I can we not point out the like
- 1:39I, I, I think it's worth noting that there were more teams this
- 1:42year at least rumored reported who were buying than selling.
- 1:49It was certainly a seller's market.
- 1:51There were some teams that we were expecting to offload some
- 1:55big names. Those names did not come off the
- 1:57board, but from all, from all reports for from all of what
- 2:03these reports indicated, seemed like there were many teams
- 2:07looking to fill some holes and there just wasn't.
- 2:10There wasn't much out there. That's what I'm saying.
- 2:13That's the worst this gets. The more the like, the more the
- 2:18teams that are in the hunt, the more buyers are going to happen
- 2:22and the more these teams are going to hold on.
- 2:24And then you have these super weird, We'll get into the
- 2:28details. A lot of these trades, these
- 2:29super weird lopsided trades where you're like, how is it
- 2:33that these prospects, prospects went for just this name and how
- 2:39you couldn't go and get this name with those same prospects.
- 2:42So that's what I'm saying is that like all the leverages from
- 2:46these sellers, because there's only a few of them and they can
- 2:50pretty much have the pick of the litter at what prospects they
- 2:53want because some of these teams that are buyers are going to be
- 2:56desperate enough to give it away and that's what you're going to
- 2:59get. But I think I, I maybe I should
- 3:01have clarified. I guess what I was trying to say
- 3:03is I was surprised at the reported interests regarding the
- 3:09number of teams across the league because we were, we had
- 3:12talked about this ahead of the deadline.
- 3:13We're like this is this is the this is a side effect of the
- 3:17expanded postseason is that and we had speculated that this
- 3:21might end up being the case at the deadline, which it's my
- 3:24personal opinion that it didn't happen.
- 3:26Is that because of the expanded post season, you were going to
- 3:29have more like presumably over half the league, more than half
- 3:35the league sitting on their hands going well, we're kind of
- 3:38fine with where we are. Let's just sit tight and see if
- 3:42we can scrap by with what we have.
- 3:44Again, I, I, from what I could tell, it seems like there were
- 3:48some active GMs, there were some active front offices, but there
- 3:51just wasn't the, the asking prices of these few select teams
- 3:56that had the, the, the golden goose, if you will, or, or geese
- 4:00gooses, whatever the geese, geese's, they weren't willing to
- 4:06give up. So I, I don't know, it's hard to
- 4:10say how how they expanded the postseason affected this
- 4:13particular deadline this year. Yeah, I think we're on the same
- 4:16track, just different parts of the train.
- 4:18How would you chat get in on this as well?
- 4:21One to 1010 being the most insane deadline you've ever
- 4:24seen. One being you would have been
- 4:27better off taking a nap. How are we ranking this
- 4:30deadline? Nate, how are you ranking this
- 4:33deadline? Scale of one to 10.
- 4:36Three. Really.
- 4:38Yeah, hold on. So you, you preface the, you
- 4:42right from the jump. You thought that AJ Torres in
- 4:47the chat says 6. Andrew says 5 1/2, kind of right
- 4:50there in the middle. You off the jump.
- 4:54You were like, ah, some pretty good gifts from Santa, No.
- 4:58And then you, you, you, you rank it at a three.
- 5:01I said hope your team got the gifts you were looking for.
- 5:05That's what I said. Oh, I thought maybe you
- 5:07mentioned something about there being some some decent gifts.
- 5:10I personally think that this this Christmas.
- 5:13Sucked. You think this Christmas sucked,
- 5:17man? But just look at the names that
- 5:20are still around that that stayed and.
- 5:22Spencer says 4 1/2. It seems like people are are
- 5:25kind of in agreement with you there.
- 5:26Like a little a subpar. That and that's that's what
- 5:33Manfred Baseball has created, this hope, this level of hope.
- 5:41I I'm going to turn a corner here, I'm going to use this
- 5:44deadline to turn a corner. I'm I'm going to stop and I'm
- 5:48not saying you are, I'm just saying personally, I'm going to
- 5:50stop blaming Manfred for the decisions or indecisions of
- 5:57these GMs because these say what you all about the postseason.
- 6:00These GMs, they're grown men. They can they can make decisions
- 6:05for their for their organizations if they so choose.
- 6:08And the guy we talked about last episode somewhat at length, Dave
- 6:11Dombrowski. I don't think Dave Dombrowski is
- 6:13going to let an expanded postseason dictate or or
- 6:18determine how how aggressive. He is, yeah.
- 6:21It's not the GMs that are being affected.
- 6:24That's true. That's that's true.
- 6:26Yeah. He he's more so immune to that.
- 6:27And there's probably a handful of others that are that are
- 6:29immune to that. But AJ Preler being one that
- 6:32seemingly doesn't care how many teams are in the postseason or
- 6:35not, he's going to go out and unload everything that he has to
- 6:40get what he can. But we'll, we'll get into.
- 6:42Sweating bullets if I'm a Padre fan.
- 6:45We'll get into that as before we get into it got to got to hit on
- 6:50the chat one more time here. Name drop the name of a player
- 6:53that you whether it's like the blockbuster name or somebody
- 6:57else. Name a player that you wanted to
- 7:01see mood, whether it was from your team or elsewhere around
- 7:03the league that didn't get moved because we we just talked about
- 7:07there seemed to be a lot of interest, a lot of desire, I
- 7:11guess you could say on the part of many of these organizations
- 7:15that just couldn't land the deal because I I guess you could
- 7:19chalk it up to asking prices, like you said, expanded post
- 7:26season maybe was a factor for some of these front offices.
- 7:29Who's who's to really say, But there were a handful of names
- 7:33again, blockbuster or not that I feel like thought could be on
- 7:37the move, but ended up staying put.
- 7:40So let's get into the names that did get moved.
- 7:44Speaking of blockbuster names, I guess you could probably say
- 7:50this was one of the biggest, if not the biggest moves to to hit
- 7:55the dash today. Jack Flaherty being sent over
- 7:59from the Tigers. I think the.
- 8:02Fact that the Dodgers. The fact that where everyone's
- 8:05freaking out about Jack Flaherty should show and tell you how
- 8:10underwhelming this deadline is. I mean, you to that point there,
- 8:17there were a handful of guys that I don't even think have
- 8:21played this year who are being traded.
- 8:24And that's what we're, that's what a lot of the commentary was
- 8:27on today. So that in addition to what you
- 8:29just said, talking about Jack Flaherty possibly being the
- 8:32highlight here, combine that with the fact that some of the
- 8:35guys that were moved haven't even played this year, that to
- 8:38me sort of speaks to what kind of deadline we had.
- 8:41Yeah, yeah, tells me that. Why am I forgetting the last
- 8:51name? That Scuba Snell?
- 8:57Who's the last? Who was that last lefty starter
- 9:01that was rumoured? You say sorry I was I was
- 9:06reading a comment you said scooble Snell crochet.
- 9:10Crochet. Thank you.
- 9:10Yeah, yeah, Sorry, long day at work.
- 9:13I think the fact that like those three names stayed put, is it it
- 9:18just it speaks to how important it was for the Dodgers to get
- 9:24Flaherty and because there's kind of a drop off when you look
- 9:30at other other names other teams.
- 9:34I think the partial sell of the of the Rangers with Lorenzen,
- 9:40but holding on to A, to an, you know, a native ALDI tells me
- 9:46that there's like this cautious selling going on.
- 9:50There wasn't that many starters, a very high asking price.
- 9:55And this is a, this was an important move for the Dodgers.
- 9:58This was a, this was a big move. I don't remember.
- 10:03I remember Trey Sweeney being a part of that, one of the
- 10:06prospects. That's just me remembering him
- 10:09as a prospect, as a Yankee. I don't remember who the other
- 10:12prospect was, but yeah, there was a it was a good move.
- 10:19They needed it. They needed to shore up the
- 10:20rotation. I just, I'm not, I'm not on the
- 10:25Flaherty train. Is that OK?
- 10:27No, I'm with you and not to, not to.
- 10:30I'm trying. To be like mean about it.
- 10:32But no, I'm not trying to be a hater and not to spoil something
- 10:36I was hoping to maybe wrap up today's episode with, but in
- 10:41terms of predictions of deals that we think may or may not age
- 10:46well. Could be one.
- 10:49I kind of chalk this up under one that might not because you
- 10:52and, and I know he's a year removed at this point and he
- 10:55seemingly has turned the season around or, or turned the
- 10:58trajectory of his career around. I guess with the way this first
- 11:01half is gone. But I, I, I just don't know if
- 11:06the reason Jack Flaherty struggled post deadline last
- 11:10year when he got sent to Baltimore was maybe an
- 11:12expectation thing. I don't know if it that's what
- 11:15I'm saying. Like, I, I mean, not to get
- 11:18political here, but I think to that clip of Trump when he's
- 11:21like, no, no, no, turn those lights off.
- 11:22They're too bright. They're too bright.
- 11:24Like is that I, I don't know. I genuinely don't know.
- 11:27Like is that something that Jack Flaherty struggles with in terms
- 11:31of expectation or demands that are are required of him in
- 11:37whatever role that he he fits in?
- 11:39I would think given the rotation that he slotted into, those
- 11:42expectations probably aren't going to be very high, nor
- 11:45should they really be, assuming they can get some guys back
- 11:48healthy. And still a.
- 11:49Swing of things. It's still LA though though.
- 11:52Regardless who's around you, those spotlights exist, whether
- 11:55or not they're on you or if the guys around you, they, they are
- 11:58there and they are on and they are bright.
- 12:01So that's, that's something to consider.
- 12:03But to going back to original point, this for me, this ends up
- 12:07possibly being one that may not we, we look back and may not end
- 12:11well. The only thing at play here that
- 12:14could determine the direction of that take or that prediction is
- 12:18that he will this he'll be heading into free agency at the
- 12:23end of this year. So he could maybe use this as a
- 12:29as an audition for the rest of the league, assuming going back
- 12:31to the spotlight, he's going to, the eyeballs are going to be on
- 12:34him every start that he makes from here on out for the
- 12:36Dodgers. So that's, yeah, it's, it'll be
- 12:39interesting. That's what makes me nervous for
- 12:41him because I don't, I just don't know if it's it's the
- 12:43pressure that gets to him or, or what.
- 12:47Home though, isn't it? It's from California.
- 12:50Is California kid? Yep.
- 12:51And I don't know if you saw, but I I saw the I think was it his
- 12:55mom posted the a picture and it was make it was going viral of
- 13:00him as like a little baby and he's like decked out in Dodger
- 13:04stuff and they're like, all right, let's roll.
- 13:06I mean. We seek these out so much.
- 13:08Yeah, I mean, I I'm not saying I'm not saying that that's going
- 13:12to lead to anything. I'm not going to say he's going
- 13:14to turn into a Hall of Famer once he touches down in LA, but
- 13:18just just a nod to the fact that, yeah, he he is going,
- 13:22going back home. So cause 'cause it was hit that
- 13:25that picture that always makes its round each year on social
- 13:29media, it the picture of him from high school.
- 13:31It was, it was him. Was it Gino?
- 13:36And then Freed I think. It is freed.
- 13:41Is it freed? There was like a A3 headed
- 13:43monster for their high school and I can't remember that.
- 13:46I can't. I I thought it was a brave,
- 13:48there's a a third guy there. So yeah, I mean.
- 13:53Yeah, I just. We'll see.
- 13:55I it's safe to say this was the headlining move for the Dodgers.
- 14:00Yeah, I, I think, I think I'd be a little bummed if I'm, if I'm a
- 14:07Dodgers fan. See, I don't know if I, I would
- 14:10say that if this was the only supporting move that you made
- 14:14yet, then yes, I would, I would be a little bummed.
- 14:17But I think when you combine it with the fact that they picked
- 14:21up Tommy, Tommy Edmond, who I'm, I'm personally a fan of, I I
- 14:25just like, I like his game. I like the way he goes about it
- 14:29and that I think that's a name that I, I was alluded to earlier
- 14:32that hasn't played yet this year, but I, I think he can
- 14:35still bring you value with positional flexibility.
- 14:38I'm huge proponent of that. Ahmed Rosario.
- 14:43And then flexible. Flexible.
- 14:45And then as, as we know at this point, Michael Kopek and and
- 14:48Flaherty on the bump, I think packaged together, I think those
- 14:52are nice supporting pieces to an already star-studded lineup.
- 14:59I think all of them combined I'd give it AB minus.
- 15:08I'm probably, I'd probably go like B and based on this, like
- 15:14we just talked about, based on the state of the, the deadline
- 15:17today and really the last couple days, yeah, AB for me puts you
- 15:21in the winners category. That's true, because I don't
- 15:23think there's too many A's out there.
- 15:24I I don't even know if there's. Except one.
- 15:28One team. Well, one team got an A.
- 15:30There's a big question mark, assuming you're talking about
- 15:33the team that I think you're talking about and the one that I
- 15:36think you and I were going back and forth on via text today.
- 15:39One team you got a. There's a huge question mark
- 15:42surrounding that, that name being in or that team being in
- 15:48the the winners category there. It's TBD.
- 15:51We'll we'll leave it at that. Something's going to pan out,
- 15:54you know? We'll see.
- 15:58We kind of touched on on the other names Dodgers picked up,
- 16:01but All in all, I think package together, I think nice
- 16:04supporting roles. The OS?
- 16:08Sorry, that's a big dub. That's it.
- 16:10That Yanks Phil's dub right there.
- 16:12Did it just end it? Just ended.
- 16:14That's a big dub, I hate it. I.
- 16:18Hate it. These boys are riding high right
- 16:20now. The lows will still be low,
- 16:22don't get me wrong, but that's a big dub.
- 16:26The lows will be low. No, no.
- 16:27One will just No one's going to see me look over anymore.
- 16:30See. Look.
- 16:31Yeah, have you ever seen Nate looking over?
- 16:32You know exactly what he's he's doing.
- 16:34He's. That's all.
- 16:36He's subjecting him, subjecting himself to the pain and
- 16:39humiliation that is a rank. He's fan, but he does it.
- 16:42He does it. You got to give him credit.
- 16:44He does it. He's not backing out.
- 16:49Orioles, let's talk O's. Oh, boy.
- 16:56Kind of a kind of a head scratch of a deadline for the Orioles.
- 17:00They pick up Trevor Rogers from the Marlins.
- 17:05They ship off Connor Norby and Kyle Stowers.
- 17:08They also pick up Eloy Jimenez. I'll be honest with you, neither
- 17:18neither of those moves do anything for me.
- 17:22It I we talked about the position of log jam that they
- 17:26have all the time and we just got word tonight that they're
- 17:29calling Jackson holiday up. So we're, we're kind of, I don't
- 17:33want to say we're back into the, we're back to square one with
- 17:36the position of log jam because they did, they were able to
- 17:38clear up some space a little bit.
- 17:40And I think there's a little bit more clarity now in terms of
- 17:45who's going to be producing where around the diamond, but
- 17:50the to, to have an opportunity. And at this point, I think I'm
- 17:56just spoiling the the segment to close the episode of winners and
- 17:59losers. I got to I got to chalk up the
- 18:03Orioles deadline as as a losing spot because you have, you have
- 18:11a legitimate chance or had a legitimate chance to put a
- 18:16stranglehold on the division. This was your division to lose
- 18:21from the jump. Every, well, I, almost
- 18:24everybody, majority of people I think felt that, believed that
- 18:30and I said the same thing last year.
- 18:33I made the joke of, hey, go out and get Trey Turner go out or
- 18:38last year, the year before, whenever, whenever that was.
- 18:40Was that last year? Two years ago.
- 18:42Two years ago, it's all starting to run together.
- 18:44We've been doing this podcast a long time.
- 18:46A lot of trade headlines or a lot of just I guess that was
- 18:49free agency. But all point remains, I for the
- 18:53last, what call it two years, I've been saying like, you're
- 18:58here now, like you are very much here.
- 19:00You're a part of the national landscape.
- 19:02You're part of the national conversation and you're playing
- 19:08in a way that proves that. So go out and acquire then.
- 19:12And they did. They've done that.
- 19:13They they've like tinkered with it.
- 19:15I mean, they've they've brought up the the the young names that
- 19:17they already have that were already in the system.
- 19:19But they go out and get a guy like Corbin Burns.
- 19:21But I'm like, that's still not enough.
- 19:22Go out and do more. Yeah, They go out and get Craig
- 19:26Kimbrel has proven that that's not exactly the the shutdown
- 19:33dominant force that they would have hoped.
- 19:35At times he's shown it, but more times than not, I think this
- 19:38year it has. That's not been the case.
- 19:41I think Orioles fans are ready to send them to the moon, but
- 19:45you had a chance at a Mulligan here at the deadline.
- 19:47And I just don't really feel like you did much to to shore up
- 19:52or solidify this this train that's that's moving on down the
- 19:57track as we approach October that you're certainly most are
- 20:01most certainly going to be competing in.
- 20:03So I I'm just not thrilled with what the O's did today.
- 20:08Yeah, I, I think the, the biggest issue with amongst the
- 20:15O's and, and I would say O's fans and probably us two who are
- 20:23just, you know, we're above casual fans.
- 20:28Like we know names of prospects. I think the hype is just so high
- 20:35on some of these names that we're so familiar with some of
- 20:38these names. And there's there's maybe like
- 20:43this overvaluing that happens with some of those names.
- 20:51Because I think if you were to look at O's Twitter right now,
- 20:53O's Twitter's like those names. Plus, maybe one more guy should
- 20:59have gotten us as Google should have gotten us a Snell should
- 21:04have gotten us a crochet. Snell for sure it.
- 21:07Snell for sure I but like another thing is Trevor Rogers.
- 21:13I don't I'm not super familiar with this game.
- 21:15I didn't look at numbers or anything.
- 21:17It's not great. It's not great.
- 21:21But I like the these are like some promising names.
- 21:25And I just, I've refused to believe that the Tigers were
- 21:29like, no, it's Jackson Holiday. That's it.
- 21:34That's all we'll take. I refuse to believe that the
- 21:38Marlins said no. You're not getting Tanner Scott
- 21:44unless Jackson Holiday's in the mix.
- 21:47Do we know what I I might be throwing you under the bus here?
- 21:50I'm not sure if you wrote this down.
- 21:51Do we know what Stowers and Norby were ranking wise?
- 22:02Because like I, I think the person.
- 22:04Was. 5 in in the in the OS system, yes, right.
- 22:12What? Was Stowers got to be top ten,
- 22:15top 15? Let's see.
- 22:18Yeah, Stowers was. Oh, they already updated it.
- 22:26Hold. On Yeah, I was going to say they
- 22:28updated pretty fast. I don't know.
- 22:33Those fans are probably yelling at us, right?
- 22:34Now no, but to your to your point though.
- 22:36I, I think you can look directly at the Padres move for for
- 22:41Please forgive me guys, it's been a long day.
- 22:44Tanner Scott went to the Padres right before I put my foot in my
- 22:47mouth. Tanner Scott.
- 22:50Yeah, yeah, yeah. With like that was a their third
- 22:56fifth in like 20 something ranks prospects, right?
- 23:01We'll we'll get into that deal number.
- 23:02Two, number four and hold on. Oh yeah, no, they shipped off
- 23:09that that deal included four. They got #4 number 50.
- 23:15I'm sorry #2 #4 #5 and #24. So that's what I'm saying is
- 23:20that like, I, I think that's a comparable deal because the OS
- 23:25needed needed that. And maybe there was an equation
- 23:28of like, all right, well, if we have Batista coming back next
- 23:34year, this whole Craig Kimbrell thing was only for a one year
- 23:38deal anyway. So like, do we give this up to
- 23:41go get a closer that we already have that taken care of next
- 23:45year? So, but like at the same time,
- 23:48you need this now. And I think you you have an
- 23:52entire franchise that's poised to go make a run, but that back
- 23:55end bullpen needs to be sure up a little bit more.
- 23:57And I'm not talking 678 guys. You did great there.
- 24:03Like you did OK there, but you needed a closer.
- 24:07There's a few there's a few teams that needed a Tanner
- 24:09Scott. And I'm not sitting here saying
- 24:12that the Padres did the correct thing, But like at the same
- 24:16time, the the Orioles have that form that's able to do that,
- 24:21that could have done that. And they didn't do that.
- 24:24And at the very least, if you don't go reliever, what exactly
- 24:29were were they asking for? For school and snow and crochet?
- 24:34And you're telling me it's that much more?
- 24:37That's what I'm saying you to, to your earlier point, you're
- 24:41saying, well, the Tigers, you don't.
- 24:43You don't believe that the Tigers looked at the Orioles and
- 24:46said no, you're not getting school unless you get unless you
- 24:50include Jackson Holiday. It's very possible that's
- 24:54exactly what they said after reading the market, after
- 24:57reading the the signs from around the league, the the
- 25:03trajectory of how these conversations, these narratives,
- 25:06these rumors were, were headed. It's it's very believable after
- 25:15seeing how this deadline went and the names that didn't go,
- 25:18it's very believable to me at least that these these teams
- 25:23that were holding on again to the golden, the golden goose or
- 25:27their respective golden goose. And they're like, no, no thanks.
- 25:32My my thing with the Orioles, though, is that with those not
- 25:38maybe those two names in particular between Norbi and
- 25:41stars. I'm just saying they're young,
- 25:44they're young guy, like they're young talent.
- 25:47They to me, I like, I know they obviously have different skill
- 25:51sets. They're they're ranked
- 25:52differently, but to me they it all sort of runs together.
- 25:54It's just this this giant player pool of, of young talent that
- 26:00are just waiting for position to open up that they can just slot
- 26:03in. I would have wait given the way
- 26:07the deadline went and the the way that we can assume that the
- 26:11conversations went between the Orioles and a team like the
- 26:13Tigers or the the White Sox or whoever.
- 26:17Fill in the blank. If they were, if those
- 26:20conversations didn't go the way you wanted to, I just, I feel
- 26:24like you should have avoided a panic move such as this, like
- 26:28way to offload Norbian stours in the offseason.
- 26:32Maybe maybe pack it once once the dust is settled, everybody's
- 26:35calmed down because everybody gets everybody gets a little
- 26:38crazy at the trade deadline things.
- 26:40I mean, if you played fantasy baseball before, you know what
- 26:43that's like. So take that feeling and amplify
- 26:46it by a million because these are like real, real life jobs,
- 26:50careers at stake here and decisions, hard decisions have
- 26:54to be made. So given that the conversations,
- 26:57assuming that they didn't go the way you wanted to wait till the
- 27:00offseason to offload these guys and get something of better
- 27:04value, because I'm sorry to say, Trevor Rogers isn't it.
- 27:08That's just that's not it. And then you go out and and cap
- 27:12off your deadline picking up Eloy Jimenez, which what is that
- 27:17about? I don't, I don't know.
- 27:18What was that about? What you're not putting him in
- 27:22the outfield? And do you like to be able to
- 27:26use the flexibility of DH ING Rushman every once in a while I.
- 27:33For a team that is absolutely in love, what you talk about
- 27:37positional flexibility, for a team that loves positional
- 27:39flexibility, this, this isn't it.
- 27:42No, it's just weighs you down. He's an anchor.
- 27:45I confused, very confused by that one.
- 27:50And he hasn't even had a a fully healthy year this year anyway.
- 27:53So it's like, what is that the last three years?
- 27:55How true. But how I mean, how much of a
- 27:57factor is that going to be this year in in terms of his health?
- 28:00I don't know. I don't, I don't know if I just.
- 28:03I would rather I would rather use those ABS towards a rushman
- 28:06half day off a Mayo you can rotate with like Westberg.
- 28:14If if if Jackson holiday, who we knew was getting caught up if
- 28:18he's playing at second, like there's a lot that you can play
- 28:21around with, but that just almost it's almost like an
- 28:26obligation to use that. This was a a very this give me
- 28:31AD plus on on the Orioles for for a grade.
- 28:36This was a very underwhelming, poorly handled deadline.
- 28:43We touched on it a little bit already, but the the move that
- 28:48the Padres made to go out and get Tanner Scott looking at that
- 28:52just a little more more deeply here we were chatting before we
- 28:58hopped on AJ Preler. It was getting, I got to say, an
- 29:03odd amount of praise post deadline today for this move and
- 29:08I'm going have you all forgotten how the deadlines and off
- 29:16seasons have gone for the Padres the last what, 2-3 years?
- 29:21And what is that amount? What is that amounted to?
- 29:26I. Don't get me wrong, we talk all,
- 29:28we talk on this podcast all the time about, about wanting GMs
- 29:33and, and front offices to, to go for it when they, when they feel
- 29:37they're in a position to, to take that leap towards the
- 29:41postseason, whether or not they, they make it to the, the other
- 29:44side of the, the, the Cliff there.
- 29:46That's, that's a conversation for another day.
- 29:50But you, you love if they're at least realistically in a
- 29:53position to go for it, for them to actually go for it and they
- 29:56go for it. But to your point, there's a
- 29:59balance. Like I he's he's set that
- 30:04between the the the contracts that you're seeing on field in
- 30:09the I think I read that he has now moved this year.
- 30:14Thirteen of their top 15 prospects just this year.
- 30:20And that is Tanner Scott, Jason Adam Louisurais.
- 30:29Is that it? I think that's it.
- 30:32I. Feel like you're missing
- 30:33somebody? Oh, cease.
- 30:34Cease. Yeah, don't cease.
- 30:37So yeah, that's you've set, you've set this organization
- 30:47back 1015 years. I don't think that's, I mean at
- 30:52least 10. Yeah, think about how.
- 30:55Long these contracts are going to go for the Machado's, the
- 30:58Bogarts like these contracts are going to go for a while no well.
- 31:02Bogo Sanders, he's not finishing his career in San Diego.
- 31:06That they're, they're either going to offload them, they're
- 31:08going to trade them, they're going to DF, they're just going
- 31:11to release them. I don't know.
- 31:12He's not finishing his contract there.
- 31:14Money and the the complete wipe out of your farm.
- 31:18And I understand pushing all chips into the table.
- 31:20And I actually do like what their bullpen looks like.
- 31:24This bullpen looks insane. It's nasty, but something that I
- 31:29was reading was that maybe like don't be so overly nasty in the
- 31:36pen if it can afford you the opportunity to to replenish the
- 31:41rotation. Your pen is already in in better
- 31:46shape than a lot of other clubs around the league, specifically
- 31:50in your league in a league that is very tied up in terms of in
- 31:57terms of the playoff picture right now.
- 32:00Maybe you should have not invested so much further into
- 32:06your pen and instead gotten something to to hold it down a
- 32:11little bit while you Darvish is is out, Joe Musgrove is out.
- 32:17I think again, like that's tough, man.
- 32:24That's tough. Overly aggressive on the back
- 32:27end of the pen. Yeah, I'm trying to look up like
- 32:30team stats right now. It's kind.
- 32:37Of hard, but I think I think balance was the right word to
- 32:40use though, because we, we, I mean, we in the last couple
- 32:45weeks, we've put a heavy emphasis at with the deadline
- 32:48and, and all that we put a heavy emphasis on, on reminding the
- 32:53people that listen and watch that our perspective, at least
- 32:57when it comes to trade deadlines off seasons, is that you always
- 33:04want to air again, our, our point of view, our perspective
- 33:07is that you always want to air on the side of proven talent.
- 33:10You don't want to become such prospect hoarders that you get
- 33:14to a place where you're so reliant on on unproven names
- 33:19that you're put in a position to where our the future of our
- 33:25season rests on these guys shoulders and half of them
- 33:28haven't panned out. You want to you want to offload
- 33:31some of those names while you still can, while those ceilings
- 33:35are still unreached and while that that potential is still
- 33:39there and it and exist in the national narrative.
- 33:45But the Padres were just, they're like, oh, you're under
- 33:49the age of like 22. See ya.
- 33:53It's just crazy. There was this, this was a lot,
- 33:58this was a lot. And I just, I, I still don't
- 34:05know if they have what it, what it, what is needed.
- 34:09I don't know if they're fully complete.
- 34:14It's hard to say it does it depends on, you know, Musgrove
- 34:17coming back depends on the you Darvish thing, which I I
- 34:21actually just learned about today.
- 34:23I didn't even know why he's out. But yeah, man, they they need
- 34:32all things to go well and it needs to happen this year.
- 34:35I he's gone. Trailer is going to be gone and
- 34:38this team is going to be You remember when the Marlins first
- 34:43moved to Miami and it was like the Jose Reyes the space and
- 34:53who's the knuckleballer? RA Dickey.
- 34:58RA Dickey They had like some names that they all just like.
- 35:04It was like this one year of like, let's get all these guys
- 35:09and then. You're talking about, you're
- 35:10talking about the rebrand when they when they rebrand it.
- 35:12Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, where they and then it
- 35:16just like dissolved after a failed season.
- 35:21If, if, if the Padres don't come, it's literally a trophy
- 35:24like that. It is now a trophy.
- 35:26You've wiped everything out, bro.
- 35:29You've wiped everything out. Otherwise it's going to be a a
- 35:32sell off in in pennies on the dollar because no one's going to
- 35:36pick up some of these contracts. Yeah, not, not wild about it
- 35:42and. Like he said, buying.
- 35:46Yeah, I, I think I was impressed after the first batch of moves
- 35:50that Priller made. I was like, this guy just
- 35:52doesn't care. He's going for it.
- 35:53But then it's like, OK, this is just your MO like this is and
- 35:57it's not. It's and not to keep bringing up
- 36:00Dave Dabrowski, but it's like it's not in a Dave Dombrowski
- 36:03style like that. He's more calculated.
- 36:05This is reckless. Very much reckless.
- 36:07And I'm like, OK, that the, the, the degree that I was impressed
- 36:12with at like at the jump, at the start of all these flurries of
- 36:19moves that he was making, it's it's gone now because it's like,
- 36:22OK, well, we've seen how poorly you've handcuffed your team at
- 36:26this point that it's like, what are we, what are you really
- 36:28doing? Do you Do you even know what
- 36:29you're doing? Is he like the head of baseball
- 36:32operations? Is he not have to?
- 36:35Is he not have to get greenlit by anybody for?
- 36:37These things, it's hard to say, these GMCBO title, like I get so
- 36:45mixed up and who's what? Let's see here.
- 36:50President of baseball OPS and GM, Yeah.
- 36:55So I suppose he doesn't have to answer to anybody.
- 36:58Hard to yeah, hard to imagine him having to get the green
- 37:02light. Still, I mean, I feel like
- 37:03they're still recovering from the Soto trade like there's.
- 37:07I mean, that's just, that's just at this point that's just in the
- 37:09mix of of moves that have. Goodness, bro, whatever.
- 37:17I mean, think about the names that they offloaded in that
- 37:20deal. Yeah, I mean, my goodness.
- 37:27Moving along here, the Braves acquire Jorge Solaire and Luke
- 37:33Jackson. Bring him back some some dudes
- 37:37from the glory days all. Those is just like a a rinse and
- 37:41repeat kind of guy, isn't he? Yeah, well, they they offloaded
- 37:44Tyler Matzik, old, old nut sack, and he's lovingly called that.
- 37:49One hurts a little bit. I'm like, I could really get on
- 37:52board with this whole call back to what was that, 2021 if you
- 37:58kept him along for the ride. Because I'm like, think, I mean,
- 38:00think about it. Duvall, Rosario, Solaire, Luke
- 38:06Jackson, If you would have kept, if you would have kept Matzik,
- 38:08that would have been great. And then I'd saw some Braves
- 38:11fans, whether seriously or not, recommending they bring back
- 38:14Jock Peterson. I'm like, you do that.
- 38:18You're there. Of the realistic options that
- 38:20you could bring back, you're there so.
- 38:23It's just weird, I still don't under like who's playing left?
- 38:31Andrew says, we thought Alex Anthopoulos was going to cook,
- 38:34but turns out he was just heating up leftovers.
- 38:36I mean, that's that, that is a, a point of view and probably one
- 38:41that I could, I could get on board with.
- 38:43I I will say though, again, kind of taken away from our, our
- 38:49closing segment, presumably the Jorge Solaire move is actually
- 38:56one that I think could age well. We, we talked about it when he
- 39:01when he signed with with the Giants.
- 39:04We talked about how it just didn't necessarily seem like the
- 39:07best fit for his game. And it's really just not, I
- 39:11don't know, it's just wasn't wild about the move all, all,
- 39:16all things considered. But I feel like bringing him
- 39:18back to the Braves, letting him cook there again, I feel like
- 39:26could could get the wheels turn in there and in turn help
- 39:30revitalize and rejuvenate a rather mediocre Braves offense,
- 39:35beat up slash mediocre offense right now.
- 39:42I think this one could could. I'm not saying, I'm not saying
- 39:45they're going to, they're not going to be playing into
- 39:48November, but I think this could could get some wheels turning
- 39:52again. Yeah, I know.
- 39:59There's nothing for me. I know I'm going out on on a
- 40:02little bit of a limb there, but I chalk chalk this one up for me
- 40:05as one that I think could age well.
- 40:09Little bit of a hot ish take. I mean, he's not exactly a
- 40:15scrub, but I, I, I see what you're saying, Gabriel says
- 40:23Braves can't give up anyone because anyone that's worth a
- 40:25damn is hurt. That's true.
- 40:28And while we're on the while we're on the subject here.
- 40:31I, I was thinking more about the the continued take that I've had
- 40:35over the last couple weeks now about you better not let the
- 40:39Braves finish ahead of you in the, in the division people
- 40:42saying well, the. Mets.
- 40:45Or yeah, don't let the Mets finish above you in the
- 40:48division. And all these Braves fans been
- 40:50like, whoa, we're just beat up. All right.
- 40:55I was again, I was thinking about it some today and I, I
- 40:57came to this conclusion, this rationale.
- 41:00Take the fact that you're beat up Braves, take the fact that
- 41:03you're beat up. Match that with the fact that
- 41:09the Mets again, I'll say it's on blue in the face.
- 41:12We're not expected to compete this year.
- 41:15That leaves your quote, UN quote leftovers up against the Mets,
- 41:21quote, UN quote leftovers. You should be beating that team.
- 41:27Your, your beat up team should be beating the Mets 10 times out
- 41:34of 10. And I'll, I'll, I'll stand on
- 41:36that. I'm not going to die on that
- 41:37deal because I don't care enough about it to, to do so.
- 41:42But what are we, what are we really talking about here?
- 41:44Let's not use the injuries as an excuse.
- 41:46I, I, I recognize the names that are, are on the shelf, but let's
- 41:53not act like you're you're you're trotting a Little League
- 41:55team out there. OK, That's.
- 41:56What I'm gonna say outfield, Kelnick, Loriano, Duvall and
- 42:04Solaire. What year is this?
- 42:08Is this 2018? What's going on?
- 42:11Why are they? Should still be better than the
- 42:12Mets. That's that's entirely my point.
- 42:14We don't need to. We don't need to.
- 42:16Linger, I think Luriano, I feel like they're going to DFA.
- 42:18Luriano. Did you see this?
- 42:20He made some. He's done some dopey things the
- 42:23last few weeks. And like, even Snit was like,
- 42:27yeah, I don't know what that was.
- 42:28Yeah. Luriano Loriano's had a has a
- 42:32weird he's had a weird career path.
- 42:34I will say I, I, you go back to his, his days in Oakland, I.
- 42:39I was. You're a good fan.
- 42:40I was. Very high on Ramon Loriano but
- 42:43just did not pan out. Oh, did I put Rosario in that
- 42:46mix too? Like what?
- 42:50What year is it? That's a great question.
- 42:53Speaking of which, the Astros pick it up, you say Coochie.
- 43:00Not just picking up bro. My goodness, what they they got
- 43:10mommy and daddy's credit card just swiping away.
- 43:13Don't care what it costs. Like damn, relax.
- 43:18I mean, what was the full return?
- 43:24Low Profito was in that, which did you see that presser?
- 43:29He's a little choked up and I appreciate that.
- 43:31Anybody that that makes fun of that, I appreciate that.
- 43:34Yeah, 'cause that guy is, he's like, he just talked about how
- 43:38it felt like home. Oh, I got I got the hall here.
- 43:43Jake Bloss, their #9 prospect. Who now becomes Blue Jays?
- 43:49Like 3 or 4 prospect. Rookie outfielder Joey Low
- 43:54Profito and minor league infielder Will Wagner their
- 43:57number 13 prospect. That's a for you sake, a
- 44:01coochie. For a guy who is currently
- 44:07sporting a 475, he's 49. Not that that necessarily
- 44:11matters. He's got a 475 with a whip of
- 44:13134. And it's a rental.
- 44:28Is it? No year and a half.
- 44:35Year and a half. No, he's a no he after this year
- 44:43it's a rental. It is a rental.
- 44:45He's a free agent 2025. What are we doing?
- 44:47What are we doing? I'm telling you, some of these
- 44:50GMs just made moves to make moves.
- 44:53This is stupid. This was a ridiculous overpay.
- 44:57Yeah, this was chalk this up as a, as a the Astros being a, a
- 45:02loser at this deadline for that move, that move.
- 45:05First baseman. What is what is that?
- 45:07You needed a first baseman. That's trash.
- 45:15I would have felt better about the Astros had they gone out and
- 45:18gotten Josh Bell and just called it a day.
- 45:20Right. Like that?
- 45:21Yeah. I mean, it would have been nice
- 45:23to get a starter, but like, if if you walked away just picking
- 45:26up Josh Bell. OK, we're not sitting here
- 45:29chalking up as losers of the deadline, but this overpay was
- 45:33hideous. It's.
- 45:35Ass that's that's an F, that's an FI don't know how that's no
- 45:41nothing against Kikuchi because like Kikuchi actually carves the
- 45:44Yankees every time I watch him, yeah, it's like.
- 45:46He he has his spots, he has his moments and.
- 45:50I bet he'll probably have a few solid postseason starts and all
- 45:55of this will be brought back up, but still, like I at what cost?
- 46:00Again, like that's I would have I wouldn't have done that one
- 46:05for one for what was the the prospect, the pitcher, the the
- 46:094th ranked. For the hall, you mean?
- 46:14Yeah, glass gas. Oh, Bloss.
- 46:18J Bloss. Yeah, that I wouldn't have done
- 46:22One for one for that. Good on the Blue Jays.
- 46:26No, Yeah. No, I agree with you.
- 46:28Yeah. Good job on the Blue Jays part.
- 46:30Blue Jays Actually, I I would give.
- 46:32They're one of the one other team that I think did pretty
- 46:36well for like not moving on from your star power.
- 46:42Yeah, and moving names while still getting production or
- 46:46still getting like productive names back it they did well.
- 46:51Yeah, that's a good point. I don't know how many winners,
- 46:54like declarative winners and losers, we can say came out of
- 46:57this draft, but there were, I would say, a fair number of
- 47:01teams at the deadline that at the very least made smart moves.
- 47:08They approached like the Red Sox, for example, like could
- 47:12they? Did I want them to do more?
- 47:14Sure. Did they add some relievers like
- 47:17I wanted, like I was hoping they would?
- 47:19Yes. Did they add a starter to the
- 47:22rotation? James Paxton, who from what I
- 47:25could see, I wasn't able to watch full game from what I
- 47:27could see, didn't have the greatest night.
- 47:28But like I said, as you're #5 I'm OK with it.
- 47:33But but they didn't do too much and honestly, now they were on
- 47:37this side of the deadline. There's more.
- 47:38There's more teams that did too much than not, right, right,
- 47:42right. And there was more recklessness
- 47:43than than not. Yeah.
- 47:46And to finish my thought, the Red Sox as an example, now that
- 47:52we're on this side of the deadline, I can look at how they
- 47:54handled the how they approach a deadline.
- 47:56And I'm like, could they have done more?
- 47:58Yes. But am I glad they didn't do too
- 48:00much? Yes.
- 48:02Yeah, because after seeing the asking prices for some of these
- 48:06guys, I'm like, I understand why you didn't do more.
- 48:10Yeah. And I'm glad that you you didn't
- 48:12meet that asking price and put us in a bind.
- 48:16Yeah, because there's a yeah. I mean, they're they're in that
- 48:19weird position where there isn't a ton of pressure to succeed
- 48:21this year. There are teams that are under a
- 48:25lot of pressure to succeed this year, and maybe that's why they
- 48:27had to overpay. It's just it's weird where they
- 48:30overpaid. Padres, like we talk about, are
- 48:34a great example. Yeah, but this Ashos thing, this
- 48:37is a terrible trade. I don't like this at all.
- 48:40This is AI think this is going to be like a few years back to
- 48:43be like this is a laughable trade or a few years later and
- 48:46just like look back and feel like this is this is a mistake.
- 48:53Well, name that I meant just mentioned a minute ago, Josh
- 48:55Bell. D Backs go out and pick up Josh
- 48:58Bell. Is this indicative of the
- 49:04severity of Christian Walker's? That's what I was going to say
- 49:07meeting on IL. Yeah, this is an issue.
- 49:10Sun sound good? Yeah, this isn't like he's out
- 49:14for two weeks kind of thing. This is a we need, we need
- 49:18somebody now, which sucks because like I was curious to
- 49:23see if the, if the dynamics weren't playing well into this
- 49:25deadline. I was, I thought he was going to
- 49:27move. I thought Christian Walker was
- 49:29the name that was going to be sent.
- 49:32They're in an interesting position, though, because the
- 49:34name that we've we've been talking about who'd been slow
- 49:37for a good portion of the first half, Corbin Carroll has has
- 49:41seen it up, picked it up. I mean, he had a was that a walk
- 49:45off? It wasn't a Grand Slam.
- 49:47Did I see it wasn't a Grand Slam?
- 49:49Was it that? Was two or three.
- 49:51I was a walk off home run either way, I think.
- 49:54Yeah, that I don't know. And that this is like,
- 49:58especially right after last year, we're like, hey, we got
- 50:02hot at the right time. We snuck in, we went on a run.
- 50:05It's like eerily similar. I didn't quite have the the
- 50:12stones to categorize the Josh Bell move as a, as a deal that I
- 50:17thought could age well because I, I just, I don't know if it's
- 50:20going to move the needle that much when it's all said and
- 50:23done. But put this is like maybe an
- 50:26honorable mention. I don't like the fact that Josh
- 50:31Bell keeps getting moved around, but as a like as a hitter, when
- 50:37he's on, he's on. It's just a matter of being able
- 50:41to find that. And I think his inconsistency at
- 50:44at times has led to teams being a little more OK with moving on
- 50:50to their next best option. And I I think that would explain
- 50:53possibly why he I think this is his third straight trade
- 50:58deadline being moved and maybe like what fourth team, I guess a
- 51:03lot of moving around for Josh Bell, but.
- 51:05I feel like he needs to stop switch hitting.
- 51:10I think that's a problem. It's hard to say I.
- 51:15Don't know whatever. They didn't do anything else,
- 51:18did they? The Diamondbacks.
- 51:20I don't not of not of note, I don't believe.
- 51:23They do a bullpen move. I don't believe so.
- 51:34Again I. Whatever, doesn't matter.
- 51:37I was only looking at it like the trades of note and I don't
- 51:42think that they added anybody of note pen wise.
- 51:48Let's see here the where are we at Michael Lorenzen or Royals?
- 51:55Add Michael Lorenzen from the Rangers.
- 51:58I like the I like the Royals deadline.
- 52:01I was a fan of the Royals deadline.
- 52:03I think they all did. They get her sig from the.
- 52:06They did? Yeah.
- 52:07From the A's, they sure did. Wasn't there one more name as
- 52:11well? Thought there was one more name.
- 52:17Oh well, you're not his biggest fan, but Paul Deyoung, They
- 52:23added Paul Deyoung today. Yeah, I thought there was
- 52:25something else. I don't know.
- 52:32Yeah. I like what the Royals did.
- 52:33I like the I like the Lorenz in depth.
- 52:39Just smart. I, I, this is I this seems like
- 52:44they're, they're navigating with intent, they're navigating with
- 52:47with a goal in mind, They're navigating with like depth to be
- 52:51able to go through this, this, this run.
- 52:54I'd like what the Royals are doing.
- 52:56I'm a big fan of what they've been doing for this is this is
- 53:00just their job well done and it matches what they've been doing
- 53:03for the year. I have a take.
- 53:06I don't know how accurate it is. Maybe there was some panic in
- 53:10the Royals front office this past week and especially today.
- 53:14Maybe they wanted to get more done but couldn't.
- 53:18But I'm going to look at the glass half full here for the
- 53:21Royals. I'm going to look at this as the
- 53:23Royals saying we did what we needed to do in the offseason.
- 53:27We're playing up to our standard right now.
- 53:31We're in a position to make the postseason and we're comfortable
- 53:35with who we have in this clubhouse right now.
- 53:38So we don't need to do a whole lot more.
- 53:40And that's that's how I'm going to go about my day.
- 53:44Thinking that the Royals how how they handled this this deadline
- 53:47because that, you know, plug some, I don't even know if you
- 53:53could say really holes just added some depth here and there
- 53:56and keep on moving. I think I'm with you.
- 54:00I think I'm with you. The Royals Royals had a an all
- 54:03right deadline. What else we got here?
- 54:10The Guardians adding Alex Cobb and Lane Thomas.
- 54:19I like the Lane Thomas move. I don't think Lane Thomas gets
- 54:22enough love. He sure doesn't.
- 54:24You're in that area, you see it. They, oh, they, they know around
- 54:29here what, what value he, what he brings to the table.
- 54:32And having been in the being in the area myself, I'm, I'm
- 54:36familiar with the conversation that surrounds that name.
- 54:39But hopefully he has a chance now to to put it on on a bigger
- 54:43stage. Alex Cobb is just the eat
- 54:45innings. I think it's like a Paxton move
- 54:48the Red Sox did. That's what it feels like to me.
- 54:51Which I kind of like. This was like one of my
- 54:53underrated picks. I'm not going to maybe chalk it
- 54:56up as again, as one that I maybe think age as well, but I it's an
- 55:01underrated pick for me because at this stage in the game, we're
- 55:06you can, you can probably safely say now that we're at the point
- 55:10of the season, we're at the threshold where you need to keep
- 55:14guys healthy. You need to keep them on
- 55:17whatever schedule they need to be on in terms of arms and and
- 55:22who you have in that rotation. And having a guy when, when Cobb
- 55:28is healthy, I mean, I know he's had some some issues when he's
- 55:31healthy, he's pushing 30 starts a season like almost every year
- 55:35again, when healthy. So having a guy who isn't has no
- 55:39is known to eat innings, that's huge at this stage of the season
- 55:46when you're trying to solidify yourself in the division as well
- 55:52as bigger picture wise the the the postseason picture.
- 55:56I think this was a was a smart move for the guardians.
- 55:58And I think, I think I heard today that he had he stayed with
- 56:02the Giants, they were going to activate him for a start, I
- 56:07think this week. But I've have since heard now
- 56:10that the Guardians are going to keep him down for a rehab start
- 56:14and then bring him up, which I think is I think that's smart.
- 56:20If if you're not paying attention to what the Guardians
- 56:23are, look out. I'm thoroughly worried to see
- 56:31them in the postseason. I think every team should be
- 56:35very worried to see them in the postseason.
- 56:41I would not be surprised about an ALCS appearance.
- 56:45I really wouldn't. Yeah, what?
- 56:50The way they play at home, I would not be surprised.
- 56:56Good move. I like that.
- 56:58That's I like. The Lane Thomas move.
- 57:00That's a take. Yeah.
- 57:05I like it. Let's see here, bear with us
- 57:10folks. We're not going to be obviously
- 57:12be able to get to every single trade here, but I'm just trying
- 57:15to go through the list and make sure I touch on the notable
- 57:18ones. A team that was active over the
- 57:22last week or however long, plus the Mariners.
- 57:25They did add Justin Turner traded for Turner from the from
- 57:30the Jays. First base sounds like.
- 57:36Yeah, I believe so. But it it's I'm not going to,
- 57:44I'm not going to crucify the Mariners over this deal because
- 57:46they they made other moves before this to put them in a
- 57:50position where they didn't have to have so much pressure on
- 57:53themselves on actual deadline day.
- 57:55They took care of some holes leading up to this.
- 57:59So I'll I'll give them a pass. See what else we got here,
- 58:06Frankie? That deal, I don't know if we're
- 58:08going to get to it, so I'm just going to bring it up now.
- 58:11That deal makes me wonder how expensive Yandi Diaz was,
- 58:20because I really thought Yandi Diaz was going to get moved.
- 58:24And the Mariners, the Astros and the Yankees could argue Red Sox
- 58:29two all needed a first baseman that could also slot it third,
- 58:35could DH and has pop Andy Diaz just bangs like that's all he
- 58:39does is hit. I'm I'm kind of surprised that
- 58:44he didn't get moved. And I wonder if it was too
- 58:46expensive. Wonder if the Rays were asking
- 58:49for a little too much. But that's what that that's that
- 58:53Turner deal makes me think, because that probably would have
- 58:56been my first choice if I'm the Mariners.
- 59:01Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like again, to use
- 59:04the analogy from earlier, the golden goose issue that seemed
- 59:08to be the case for the White Sox with crochet, the Tigers with
- 59:13Scooble, that that that golden goose thing mostly surrounded
- 59:23pitchers. No like.
- 59:25I think for the most. Part there wasn't any real.
- 59:27I mean, I mean, I guess you could say Vladdy, but I think
- 59:31the Blue Jays made it clear earlier rather than later that
- 59:34that. We were all dreaming.
- 59:36Yeah, I don't think that they thought that was a thing, but
- 59:38maybe the Rays looked at how the deadline went today and they're
- 59:43looking around going. The asking price, whether for
- 59:48position, player or pitcher at this stage in the game, seems to
- 59:52be high across the board. So let's not let's not cave and
- 59:57and get something less. I think overall the race we
- 1:00:02still had a good deadline if we. Panic.
- 1:00:04I think they still did well. I think so too.
- 1:00:06I'm just surprised that Yandi didn't go.
- 1:00:08And I'm I'm definitely surprised Fairbanks didn't go.
- 1:00:10For the amount of teams that needed relief help, I'm
- 1:00:15surprised. But Frankie Montas to the
- 1:00:20Brewers, I know you have mixed feelings about Frankie Montas.
- 1:00:25Every time I see that guy start it looks like he's put on
- 1:00:27another 15 lbs. Yeah, it does.
- 1:00:30Man's has gotten big. And that's always an interesting
- 1:00:34factor or play to see how it affects it.
- 1:00:36Some guy, I mean, I know CC is like the classic example, but
- 1:00:40like some guys, it legitimately helps some guys.
- 1:00:44It just just not the case. Where did he go to Milwaukee?
- 1:00:54In division, huh? I think the Reds dropped the
- 1:00:58ball a little bit. I mean, the Reds, who did they
- 1:01:05get? They got Thai France.
- 1:01:10Really thought India was going to go.
- 1:01:12Yeah, I know that was guy you wanted.
- 1:01:16I wanted him bad. I feel like he would have been a
- 1:01:19he would have been a good fit there.
- 1:01:20Perfect Fit 0. Well, I don't know, seems like
- 1:01:24Jazz Chisholm is doing just fine.
- 1:01:26Yeah, but he's still not a lead off.
- 1:01:28We're not playing a lead off traded for him as a lead off
- 1:01:30guy. He's not even lead off.
- 1:01:32He is doing fine though. Where am I out on my list here?
- 1:01:39Mark Leiter, Junior Any thoughts on that for the Yankees pin?
- 1:01:44Crazy, just flew in to Philly tonight and pitched in extras
- 1:01:48today and did well. I would love, I would love to
- 1:01:53get a behind the scenes like vlog of a guy that gets traded
- 1:01:57on deadline day, makes it to the ballpark, assuming they're like
- 1:02:03across the country and actually plays in said game.
- 1:02:07Like give me, give me the like swarm of personnel and staff.
- 1:02:12They're like escorting him from the front gate to the clubhouse
- 1:02:16step or the dugout steps like dressing it.
- 1:02:20I, I just picture them like dressing the guy like as he's
- 1:02:23like dropping his suitcase and like slamming back a, a, a sub
- 1:02:28or something like that. What a wild day.
- 1:02:31I. Know but IA lot of swing and
- 1:02:38miss. He's a lot of swing and miss
- 1:02:40which the bullpen very much needed that.
- 1:02:43So I'm excited to see what he does.
- 1:02:45I would not be surprised especially again another blown
- 1:02:48saved by Clay Holmes tonight. I wouldn't be surprised if
- 1:02:51lighter starts closing some games.
- 1:02:54Him and Weaver good move though and Caleb Ferguson is gone.
- 1:03:01See you get out. Brutal.
- 1:03:05We almost got him on the pod back in his Dodgers days but
- 1:03:09didn't pan out. Did.
- 1:03:10He ghosted us. Sort of like we were both going
- 1:03:15back and forth and then it just. I think I remember that.
- 1:03:18Because friend of the pod Ross tripling had had put us in
- 1:03:21touch. And then I think, I think.
- 1:03:24The. Schedules got busy, just got
- 1:03:26jammed up. We had a day lined up and then
- 1:03:28it didn't work right. Yeah, this was back when he was
- 1:03:31with LA, so it's been some time now.
- 1:03:33But that's the I just mentioned that because that's like the one
- 1:03:35thing I think of when I when I hear that name and I see him on
- 1:03:38on the screen for dead deadline day.
- 1:03:41Is that where he went? I don't I was one of the ones
- 1:03:44that kind of slipped under the radar for me.
- 1:03:48Where are we at here? Lucas Sims to the Sox again,
- 1:03:54goes back to my original point. Like we at we added some some
- 1:03:58arms to the the mix there in the pen, which I'm like I'm pleased
- 1:04:04with for for no other reason except that our our pen is spent
- 1:04:10right now. Like I at this rate, I don't
- 1:04:12really care like how well you pitch.
- 1:04:15We just need we need warm bodies.
- 1:04:18Yeah. And going back to my, my other
- 1:04:22point about the Red Sox in particular is like, I I'm just
- 1:04:26glad you didn't do too much. You did.
- 1:04:28You didn't overextend yourself to try to make something happen
- 1:04:31that just wasn't smart. And so looking at how the Red
- 1:04:36Sox did at the deadline as a whole, I'm, I'm like
- 1:04:40indifferent, I guess. Do I wish I did more?
- 1:04:43Yes, but at this at this point, I'm just excited to see what
- 1:04:46this what this mix of guys can continue to do that we've had
- 1:04:51pretty much the whole the whole way so far.
- 1:04:53So I'm sure that's probably how the front office is feeling at
- 1:04:56this at this point too. So we'll see.
- 1:05:00We touched on the Padres already, but Martine Perez as an
- 1:05:05as an arm to that rotation depleted rotation.
- 1:05:12Innings. Yeah, on those days that you
- 1:05:17just like you just need a guy to go out and veteran and Brack ups
- 1:05:21and Mayans he that's another guy.
- 1:05:25Talk about a guy who has his spots and his moments.
- 1:05:28Yeah, I would agree. He can.
- 1:05:29He can twirl. He.
- 1:05:31Looked good in the postseason last year, didn't he?
- 1:05:33With the Rangers? I thought he did OK.
- 1:05:36I think so. Finished with a or No, that was
- 1:05:402022. I don't know.
- 1:05:43I don't remember how we did in the postseason last year.
- 1:05:46But whatever. Got a ring, though, we know
- 1:05:49that. But yeah, that's a guy that can
- 1:05:52twirly a a a 1/2 tease and outing, and I think the Padres
- 1:05:56will take whatever they can get at this.
- 1:05:58Point, I think he's OK, potentially like a a middle
- 1:06:01relief guy role as well. Yeah, he's, he's been both.
- 1:06:05And honestly, I don't know what they're planned.
- 1:06:07I think when you get back, yeah, Joe Musgrove gets back.
- 1:06:11Like maybe that transition happens.
- 1:06:13Yeah, I don't know. Like I said, I don't know what
- 1:06:16their plan of use for him is, but he he has done both.
- 1:06:21He's he's started and he's gone the long relief route.
- 1:06:24So we'll see how they use them. Did we tell?
- 1:06:28I don't think we touched on Mark Hanna.
- 1:06:30Giants pick up Mark Hanna. Weird, weird.
- 1:06:35You've never been all that high on Mark Hanna anyway, so.
- 1:06:37I just I don't think I'm high on either party Mark Hanna or the
- 1:06:41Giants. And I hate the the reports of
- 1:06:45like teams checking in on Snell, but they they're selling Solaire
- 1:06:50to keep snail because they're in the hunt.
- 1:06:53Like that's all I saw. And I was just like, whatever,
- 1:06:55like that talk about like a lack of self-awareness.
- 1:07:00It's the San Francisco Giants. Well, it would be worth checking
- 1:07:07out Blake Snell's second-half numbers.
- 1:07:09Like I, I think if you look at his career, I think the
- 1:07:11second-half is certainly his friend in in relation to the
- 1:07:16first half. Going to do anything?
- 1:07:19I, I'm not saying the giants, I'm just saying Blake sell Blake
- 1:07:22Snell in particular because I know it's a name we've, we've
- 1:07:24brought up multiple times on this on this episode, but just
- 1:07:27something, just something to look out for.
- 1:07:29Not saying that Blake Snell is going to be the savior that they
- 1:07:31need. I I think they probably need a
- 1:07:34little bit more, but just worth noting, especially after the
- 1:07:40disastrous start to the year he had, as we well know and has
- 1:07:44been well documented, Mets pick up Paul Blackburn.
- 1:07:52I honestly think this might be the last one I have on my list
- 1:07:54here of semi. I think we're we're on the
- 1:07:59second third tier of trades at this point.
- 1:08:01And as I mentioned, there are plenty more that took place in
- 1:08:05in a flurry of of moves in the final moments of the deadline
- 1:08:09today. But Paul Blackburn to the Mets.
- 1:08:13Good move. Underrated move I think.
- 1:08:19I think this was a. Fitted into that category of
- 1:08:23Martine, Perez and Paxton and it's just back end, rotation,
- 1:08:29depth, eat innings. I think this.
- 1:08:32With a high up, I think a higher upside.
- 1:08:33Yes, yes, yes, I and I was going to mention that, but I think I
- 1:08:39think this was an appropriate response given the the crazy
- 1:08:43overpays, given the crazy asking prices as as we've harped on
- 1:08:49from this deadline, I think this was an appropriate response to
- 1:08:53losing presumably Kodai Senga for the rest at least the
- 1:08:57regular season. I don't know what what October
- 1:08:59holds for the Mets or or if that's part of the the picture
- 1:09:03of the plane here, but I think this was an appropriate
- 1:09:06response. I don't I mean, he's not going
- 1:09:08to be Kodai Senga for you, you can assume, but I think this was
- 1:09:13this was smart on on behalf of the Mets to go out and identify
- 1:09:17a guy who can give the minions something.
- 1:09:19Unfortunately, Kodysenka hasn't been able to do for you this
- 1:09:22year. And he's going to eat.
- 1:09:25He's like I said, he's going to eat those innings.
- 1:09:27He is going to you mentioned the upside.
- 1:09:31I I think there's there's some possible upside there.
- 1:09:34And with the way that the Mets have been like flirting with
- 1:09:38good to very good ball as of late, maybe he gets into the mix
- 1:09:43there and and this is one of those names that you look back
- 1:09:47at the deadline and go wow, the Mets actually Mets actually
- 1:09:51pulled off quite the move there. One that did not seem to take on
- 1:09:56many people's radars at the time.
- 1:09:58So time time will tell. But I'm I'm with you.
- 1:10:02I was I think I was a fan of of that deal as well.
- 1:10:07Low key any I mean, we kind of touched we touched on winners,
- 1:10:13losers, the net, oh, the team that we were kind of teasing at
- 1:10:19the beginning of of of being what we think, what we hope for
- 1:10:23their case is a winner. Are we are we talking Miami
- 1:10:27Marlins here? We are.
- 1:10:29OK, I intention I intentionally put a question mark though.
- 1:10:35I, I listed out my winners. I will listed out my losers of
- 1:10:40which I think I've already shared at this point, but I put
- 1:10:44a question mark next to the Marlins because it really
- 1:10:48depends this massive haul that they got from this this week or
- 1:10:54today or this week, whatever ended end up being, are you
- 1:11:00going to deuce? Are you going to handle it well
- 1:11:03or we just looking at more of the same?
- 1:11:05That's fair. That's very fair.
- 1:11:08That's very fair. But I do think that this was an
- 1:11:12excellent job of I mean, what did what did they get like 1516
- 1:11:19names added to their farm? Some it was something like.
- 1:11:24That they traded like 30% of their roster, yeah.
- 1:11:29Jazz AJ Puck, Tanner Scott, Trevor Rogers, Brian De La Cruz,
- 1:11:36Josh Bell. Josh Bell Yeah, you said jazz.
- 1:11:43I think there was somebody else in there 'cause there's, what,
- 1:11:50nine they got rid of? 99, yeah.
- 1:11:53I think there was nine names they got rid of.
- 1:11:56I think they added like it's got to be like close to 20 names to
- 1:12:00their farm. Yeah, like and yeah, somewhere
- 1:12:02in there. Yeah, there's some, there's some
- 1:12:04dudes that can bop in there. So I, I think this was the job
- 1:12:07well done. My I've got some losers.
- 1:12:14The Rockies, you're a loser. You're just a freaking loser.
- 1:12:19You're just, you're just so you're so low of a loser.
- 1:12:23I mean, what what are you doing? I get it.
- 1:12:26But like, what are they? What are you going to?
- 1:12:28What are you going to ship out if you're the?
- 1:12:29Rockies based on what we saw, Ryan McMahon would have brought
- 1:12:36back fan OK, Yeah. Kevin McMahon would have brought
- 1:12:40back a whole lot. Angels loser.
- 1:12:44What are you doing? Tyler Anderson, Taylor Ward
- 1:12:48Renhifo Renhevo. True.
- 1:12:51Yeah. What are?
- 1:12:52What are you doing? Tyler Anderson was the name I
- 1:12:55saw on more than one occasion today where people were saying
- 1:13:00he should not be in an angel's uniform by the end of the day.
- 1:13:03And here we are with Loser. Not just him, you mentioned
- 1:13:07Taylor, Ward, Renhifo. I mean, what are what are we
- 1:13:13doing? Yeah, that's utility guy.
- 1:13:18And are we, are we making a run at it?
- 1:13:20Angels like what do? What is the vision?
- 1:13:22What is the plans? What is the direction?
- 1:13:24Such a miserable thing going on over there.
- 1:13:29I would call the the Rays a winner.
- 1:13:30I'm going to chalk them up as a winner.
- 1:13:32I think they did well. I think they kept themselves in
- 1:13:35a position where like, they're still going to you just watch.
- 1:13:39They're going to get their names back in the rotation next year,
- 1:13:44held on to some pieces. They're going to be fine.
- 1:13:46At 9 1/2 back angels, are we going to make a run at it?
- 1:13:49Are we, are we, are we going for it?
- 1:13:51Freaking loser. Sorry, I just had to get that
- 1:13:54out there. Cool. 14 games under 500.
- 1:13:57Even better. 12 back in the wild card.
- 1:14:01Yeah, yeah. Anyway, yeah, you want to get
- 1:14:06into some names. They've already, like, kind of
- 1:14:08done their thing. You see Tommy Pham hit a Grand
- 1:14:10Slam. Today, Tommy Pham hit a Grand
- 1:14:12Slam. I think you, I think we're
- 1:14:14talking Jazz has what, 4 four home runs through.
- 1:14:19Through three games. Through three games, what was
- 1:14:21the other? Be fair one was off a position
- 1:14:24player but hey counts. Hey, it's a it's a home run in
- 1:14:29this in the in the score book, who was the other name we're we
- 1:14:34mentioned? That came in right away.
- 1:14:40Austin Hayes with the Phillies. Yeah, you said he went deep.
- 1:14:43Was that deep today? I.
- 1:14:45Think he had four. RB is tonight.
- 1:14:49Love to see it. I'm a little curious as if, like
- 1:14:54the if the Phillies are going to be OK, like when you take Soto
- 1:14:58and Sir Anthony Dominguez out of that, out of that bullpen, like,
- 1:15:02are they OK? They're going to be all right.
- 1:15:06Yeah, that was similar for me at least.
- 1:15:10I kind of put them in the O's in the same boat where I'm like,
- 1:15:14you really had a chance here to like.
- 1:15:17Double down. Put your foot on the throat of
- 1:15:20the rest of not just the division, but the league.
- 1:15:24And I mean, they got the best team in baseball.
- 1:15:29So clearly whatever they've done to this point has worked.
- 1:15:32But I'm like, I don't know, it's like we talked about it's that
- 1:15:36it's finding that balance of like we're good clearly with
- 1:15:40with what we've got here. We don't need anybody else
- 1:15:43versus like, why not just go full like, yeah, just domination
- 1:15:51mode and and bring in some reinforcements.
- 1:15:54It's it's a balance. You got to strike.
- 1:15:55And I think Davey is one of those guys that's like, no,
- 1:16:00we're, we're good. He looks around, he goes.
- 1:16:02We've made. We made the moves we're going to
- 1:16:03make. We're don't rock the boat too
- 1:16:05much. Yeah.
- 1:16:06So I don't know. Yeah.
- 1:16:12Well done. Well done.
- 1:16:15Well done. There's a lot going on.
- 1:16:18Also, did the twins do anything like a single move with just one
- 1:16:24singular move? I don't believe so.
- 1:16:32Let's do a quick. Let's do a quick command F on
- 1:16:38the. They got Trevor Richards.
- 1:16:45Well, thanks for hanging out with us tonight, everybody.
- 1:16:50Oh, they got Ryland Bannon. That was actually July.
- 1:16:54That was July 15th. So I don't not really sure what
- 1:16:57we're doing there. I'm.
- 1:16:58Not going to count that. To be fair, they got him in
- 1:17:02exchange for unknown compensation, so.
- 1:17:04Hey, oh, nice. Talk about rocking the boat.
- 1:17:09Yeah, thanks for hanging out with us, folks.
- 1:17:10This was fun. Apologize again.
- 1:17:12We weren't able to get to everyone, but I feel like we
- 1:17:14covered enough of the trades. At the big ones.
- 1:17:17In in depth to hopefully give you some things to chew on as we
- 1:17:23I don't want to say enter the unofficial second-half, but as
- 1:17:25we now are on this side of the trade deadline threshold now we
- 1:17:31go as you remember there's no like second deadline, there's no
- 1:17:37like weird waiver thing now yeah, that's gone.
- 1:17:40So like, we're this. Is it?
- 1:17:42Now we go whether you made the, whether your team made the moves
- 1:17:46you're hoping they would make or they didn't, who you got is who
- 1:17:51you got. So now we go collectively, all,
- 1:17:57all teams are now a go and we'll see how these post season
- 1:18:01pictures shape out or shake out. We we've we've mentioned the
- 1:18:05National League is very, very clogged right now.
- 1:18:09That wild card race is still just a headache to try to sort
- 1:18:13through. And then you got some races in
- 1:18:16the American League that are going to be interesting to keep
- 1:18:18an eye on and going to be very intrigued to see how these
- 1:18:23additions slash subtractions at the deadline effect said races.
- 1:18:28So yeah, appreciate you all hanging out with us.
- 1:18:32This is going to serve as our second episode of the week, so
- 1:18:38you guys won't hear it 'cause we we did a deadline update on
- 1:18:44Sunday, right? Sunday.
- 1:18:46Yeah, so this is our second episode of the week, so you
- 1:18:49won't hear from us until next weekend, so.
- 1:18:53Sunday. Enjoy the rest of your week of
- 1:18:56baseball. That's all I got.
- 1:19:03Yeah, quick note, I think, I think James McCann is a real
- 1:19:08tough SOB. But I did catch a few highlights
- 1:19:12of the women's rugby going on in the Olympics and all of them
- 1:19:16looked like that. So how tough is he really?
- 1:19:18You know what I mean? That's that's a valid point.
- 1:19:20That's a valid point. So yeah, that's all I got.
- 1:19:23So don't go stay some curveballs.
- 1:19:25Well said, we love you all and as always, looking forward to
- 1:19:27talking more baseball with you guys soon.
- 1:19:29Until next time, stay filthy.
