- 0:11Hello friends, It's shown here. It's Monday, it's the 5th of
- 0:16May. It's the start of a new week.
- 0:18And to celebrate this new week, we've got a new book to read.
- 0:22This is the second book written by our impetuous mate Peter
- 0:26Jesus, close friend and disciple.
- 0:28And you'll remember in the first book he wrote to the early
- 0:31Christians spread all around the world, urging them to hold true
- 0:35to their faith in the midst of communities that didn't
- 0:38understand them. And in the second letter you
- 0:41find in your Bible from Peter, we have got Peter writing into a
- 0:45different circumstance here. You have got these teachers who
- 0:50are spreading this teaching around the early church, which
- 0:53is basically saying you guys have got it all wrong.
- 0:55Christians, get your head out of the sand.
- 0:58Have a look around. Jesus has not come back.
- 1:01That first generation of apostles, they have died and
- 1:04Jesus didn't come back. In fact, God does not intervene
- 1:08dramatically in our world. That's not the way this works.
- 1:13And so Peter's saying, do not listen to these teachings.
- 1:16Hold firm to what the Scriptures say.
- 1:18Our God is a God who steps into the story of the world to be
- 1:23heard, to be felt, and to make a difference.
- 1:26So that is the argument that you will hear in these three pithy
- 1:30little chapters which make up the book of Second Peter.
- 1:34And this is probably a fantastic message for us to hear in the
- 1:37midst of our postmodern world where every different truth is
- 1:41equally valid. So why don't we buckle in and
- 1:44hear what our friend Peter has to say as we read together
- 1:47Second Peter chapter 1. This letter is from Simon Peter,
- 2:02a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ.
- 2:06I'm writing to you who share the same precious faith we have.
- 2:11This faith was given to you because of the justice and
- 2:14fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Saviour.
- 2:19May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in
- 2:24your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.
- 2:28By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for
- 2:32living a godly life. We have received all of this by
- 2:36coming to know Him, the One who called us to Himself by means of
- 2:41His marvellous glory and excellence.
- 2:44And because of His glory and excellence, He has given us
- 2:47great and precious promises. These are the promises that
- 2:51enable you to share His divine nature and escape the world's
- 2:56corruption caused by human desires.
- 2:59In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God's
- 3:03promises. Supplement your faith with a
- 3:06generous provision of moral excellence and moral excellence
- 3:11with knowledge, and knowledge with self control, and self
- 3:15control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with
- 3:20godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and
- 3:25brotherly affection with love for everyone.
- 3:30The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you
- 3:34will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 3:37But those who failed to develop in this way are short sighted or
- 3:41blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old
- 3:44sins. So, dear brothers and sisters,
- 3:48work hard to prove that you really are among those God has
- 3:52called and chosen. Do these things and you will
- 3:56never fall the way. Then God will give you a grand
- 4:00entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Saviour
- 4:04Jesus Christ. Therefore, I will always remind
- 4:08you about these things, even though you already know them and
- 4:12are standing firm in the truth you have been taught.
- 4:15And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as
- 4:19long as I live, for our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I
- 4:25must soon leave this earthly life.
- 4:27So I will work hard to make sure you always remember these things
- 4:31after I'm gone. For we were not making up clever
- 4:35stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord
- 4:39Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendour
- 4:42with our own eyes when he received honour and glory from
- 4:46God the Father. The voice from the majestic
- 4:50glory of God said to him, This is my dearly loved Son, who
- 4:55brings me great joy. We ourselves heard that voice
- 5:00from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
- 5:05Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in
- 5:09the message proclaimed by the prophets.
- 5:12You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words
- 5:17are like a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns
- 5:22and Christ, the morning star, shines in your hearts.
- 5:27Above all you must realise that no prophecy in scripture ever
- 5:32came from the prophets own understanding or from human
- 5:35initiative. No, those prophets were moved by
- 5:39the Holy Spirit and they spoke from God.
- 5:55Lord, thank you for this encouragement, this
- 5:58encouragement to hold firm to what we know to be true in you
- 6:02and to all your promises and as well as the grace from you that
- 6:07floods our life in every way. We take this encouragement, this
- 6:13encouragement to spend our days pursuing moral excellence and
- 6:17knowledge and self control and patient endurance and godliness
- 6:25and affection for each other. Our Lord, if we can be these
- 6:30people, these people who patiently endure, who love one
- 6:35another, who strive to live morally excellent lives with
- 6:40knowledge and self control, ah Lord, the transformation that
- 6:44this would make not only in our lives, but in the lives of our
- 6:47communities. And that would certainly 'cause
- 6:50people to do a double take and say, wow, there is something
- 6:53different about those people. So, Lord, transform us, May the
- 6:57fruits of your Spirit grow and blossom and bubble over so that
- 7:02we can be your transformed people bringing about your
- 7:05Kingdom in our lives. And we pray all of this in your
- 7:10saving name, Jesus, Amen.
