- [00:00:00] Dr. Emilio Galán: wipe the butt is like, I want it inside out. Style, core memory embedded in their brain. I will always help you. you're 15, you're 16, you went to a party, you drank a little alcohol. How did it happen? You know, it's fine. You, [00:00:16] Dr. Emilio Galán: whatever, it happened, [00:00:17] Dr. Emilio Galán: and now you're in a little bit of trouble. And who are you gonna call? I didn't get upset about how many times you asked me to wipe your ass. [00:00:23] Adam Fishman: Welcome to Startup Dad, the podcast where we dive deep into the lives of dads who are also leaders in the world of startups and business. I'm your host. Adam Fishman building a company for nearly seven years only to be pushed out, might cause a lot of founders to want to build a revenge company, not Dr. [00:00:44] Adam Fishman: Emilio Galán. Instead, he became a stay at home dad and finished his medical school eight years after pausing to build his company. To get today, we go through his wild journey from dropping outta medical school to build a transcription company to shutting it down. Just shy of the launch of ChatGPT to taking only two days of paternity leave and then becoming a stay-at-home dad to two kids. [00:01:08] Adam Fishman: Along the way, we covered how to manage resentment, finding contentment in the dopamine desert. How he takes care of himself with four autoimmune disorders. His advice for other founders going through the same journey, how internal family systems and nonviolent communication have transformed his life and why he doesn't believe shy exists. [00:01:29] Adam Fishman: He is a parenting story for everything, and this was one of the most entertaining and educational conversations I've ever had on this show. If you like what you hear, please subscribe to Startup Dad on YouTube or Spotify so you never miss an episode. You'll find it everywhere you get your podcasts. [00:01:46] Adam Fishman: Welcome, Dr. Emilio Galán to startup. Dad, thanks for joining me today. [00:01:52] Dr. Emilio Galán: Hey, my pleasure, Adam, [00:01:54] Adam Fishman: And a big shout out to Alex Cohen. Not yet a doctor, but still working in the healthcare space for introducing the two of us. I really appreciate it. Um, how do you and Alex know each other? [00:02:04] Dr. Emilio Galán: Alex. Appreciate you, man. Um, he's out on the grind. [00:02:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: he's doing that work trying to build out some AI tooling for physicians to do, uh, outbound inbound calls. [00:02:17] Dr. Emilio Galán: my former investor was looking at them and said, Hey, you should talk to these guys. I think that you guys will connect. Alex and I talk. of course we connected. [00:02:27] Dr. Emilio Galán: [00:02:27] Dr. Emilio Galán: he said, I think you should do this podcast. I said, yeah, I'm always down to talk with good people. [00:02:32] Dr. Emilio Galán: right after that, boom, he gets his. Funding from that investor who was looking at them. So it was just like a full circle moment, you know? Yeah. [00:02:39] Adam Fishman: Wow. Very cool. and of course we'll get into this, but you also once founded a company or two that was AI powered and designed to help doctors, so [00:02:50] Dr. Emilio Galán: We were sticks and stones back in 2020, you know what I mean? We didn't have what is today. So [00:02:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: yeah, there was a little AI up in there. We also had lots of human beings. [00:03:00] Dr. Emilio Galán: beings. [00:03:01] Adam Fishman: Okay. Well, I wanna start today with a story. So for folks who maybe skipped the, the intro, you are a doctor, you're an md, you've started several companies, and you're now a stay at home dad to a five-year-old and a three-year-old. And your, your wife is a doctor, [00:03:17] Adam Fishman: The idea of going to medical school, starting companies, raising two kids, bailing out of the company world to be, to do the demanding world of, of being a full-time parent. that is a journey. [00:03:29] Dr. Emilio Galán: [00:03:29] Adam Fishman: So take me through those different phases of your, of your life. [00:03:33] Dr. Emilio Galán: it probably starts like, I want to be a doc, you know, like I'm in a group of kids, I'm in middle school or something, maybe elementary. [00:03:40] Dr. Emilio Galán: It's early, and I'm like, look at all these kids. you know, that kid's like the funniest kid, that's the sports guy. Like they got game, I can see why they're valuable. What's what about me? Like, who am I? like, Ooh, I'm a smart mother, you know, I'm a, I'm a smart guy. Like, I can do the tests. [00:03:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: I can hit, I can hit the grades. Like I know I've got that. I'm a caring, empathetic, and a caretaker person by default. So that's a big learning that you and I were talking about before. Also, you've got massive reinforcement from family that's like, what you like to put a bandaid on? You're gonna be a doctor one day? And I'm like, Ooh Dr [00:04:17] Dr. Emilio Galán: Galán it feels nice to [00:04:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: to [00:04:19] Dr. Emilio Galán: Dr. [00:04:19] Adam Fishman: Galán [00:04:19] Adam Fishman: Now, wait, wait, hold on. Did you have any other doctors in your family? [00:04:22] Dr. Emilio Galán: are a zero. We are a zero doc situation. But we [00:04:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: do [00:04:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: have a worse grandmother who's like, I should have been a, you [00:04:29] Dr. Emilio Galán: know what I mean? Like, that's, it's there, but. It has the extra like fruit of the first doc in the [00:04:36] Dr. Emilio Galán: family. [00:04:37] Dr. Emilio Galán: So I started to like this idea of being a doc that showed up as like, I'm eight years old and mom, one day I wanna be a doctor. And I more or less follow, you know, hitting like rocks and walls along the way. [00:04:52] Dr. Emilio Galán: Plenty of obstacles, but I more or less went along that path. The other side of me wants to say I have four autoimmune conditions. So it's like I've gotta do a lot to take care of my body. [00:05:04] Dr. Emilio Galán: And I've been on all kinds of meds. Early in my life. I've been on crutches, I haven't been able to walk. There are like, okay, I can feel te like there is sadness too to the story. Like there's some deeper meaning too. docs get to do amazing things and it's amazing to be in a healing role. I think the doc role today, like rubber stamp, you're in the Hama doc, gets to do some of that and then has to do a whole bunch of bullshit. [00:05:31] Dr. Emilio Galán: And so that gets, we're getting into the like, business part of my life. But, I wanna be a doc for various reasons. Early. I work on that. I work on that and it feels somewhat natural. I like taking care of patients. I like taking care [00:05:46] Dr. Emilio Galán: of people. It's amazing experience. [00:05:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: And so I followed that path from, let's just say eight more or less straight. I go to Arizona State. I do pre-med And I do philosophy and I bring those two things to, and so like, I guess I start to like do things outside of the normal box of medicine and healthcare. [00:06:05] Dr. Emilio Galán: But, then I go to Cal and then go to UCSF for medical school. I am in my last year of medical school and like, you know, this is still pretty good, but [00:06:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: what is happening? Why are we spending so much time doing so much stuff that doesn't help anybody? Nobody, it doesn't help me. It doesn't help the patient. Why? And the like, kind of surprise moment is two of my attendings. Who are like my hero bosses, quit in my fourth year, [00:06:44] Dr. Emilio Galán: I can't spend any time with my kids and they're working me to the bone [00:06:47] Dr. Emilio Galán: and what they call this is, there's like a moral distress to being a doc where like you're in the room and you're like, I think that you need this life saving surgery. [00:06:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: The four conditions I need, I need Humira, I need it every year. I've tried to get off it, but I've been on it for 20 years. I need that thing every week to every month. It depends on how I'm doing. Every effing time, I change my insurance. [00:07:15] Dr. Emilio Galán: they're like, you don't need it. Prove it to me. It's like, how much it gonna cost? They're like, it going cost you 1800 bucks. It just, it's a nasty mess. And the doc has to experience that. Like, I think you should have this. And then insurance company is like, no. [00:07:30] Dr. Emilio Galán: the hospitals are nearly as bad. they did great training. I loved UCSF so much. But like the general, if the hospital, we're gonna wanna make a lot of money [00:07:41] Dr. Emilio Galán: and we got lots of line worker docs. [00:07:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: And the docs do this trade, like you're gonna take care of the paperwork, kind of. You're gonna make sure I don't get sued Too bad. Alright. I'm a sign up for you. I also got this crazy debt, so let me, boom, they get in the game. it's hard to be a doc. and I start to experience that in my last year of medical school to the point of we gotta do something about this. And right around that time, bloop, it was the Google Homes and the Alexas coming out [00:08:12] Dr. Emilio Galán: and we're, so, we're at that phase of the AI interest. [00:08:16] Dr. Emilio Galán: Me and this guy start talking, shout out to Noah. He's like, maybe we can put this little assistant with the doc. Maybe we can just put that in the room with the doc and then help them do stuff that's like really burning them out. [00:08:33] Dr. Emilio Galán: I like I like that. I like that. So I'm like, peace medical school, Mm. we're out. I'm gonna do this. And I'm like, but I'm gonna come back to you. And they're like, how long? I'm like, I don't know. And it's like, how long can I be out? And they're like, seven years you can be out. I'm like, oh, That longer than I thought. [00:08:50] Dr. Emilio Galán: It wasn't like that straight. There were like one year leave and then it was like two year leave. But then I was like, what's the longest anyone's ever been out [00:08:58] Dr. Emilio Galán: in the history? And they're like, seven years is the longest we've ever approved. I said, okay, let's got some time. we start this company named Robin. [00:09:07] Dr. Emilio Galán: Okay. Shout out to UDI for making that. it's this little, ooh, it's just this sexy little, I mean it's just this nice [00:09:16] Adam Fishman: Oh, okay. [00:09:17] Dr. Emilio Galán: like [00:09:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: four microphones, microray. It's got that diffuser kinda look like air freshener look [00:09:24] Dr. Emilio Galán: but easy to flip, nicely piece, nice piece of hardware. [00:09:27] Dr. Emilio Galán: My dad's company helped us build this actually. [00:09:29] Dr. Emilio Galán: there's a full circle, like family moment. I'm like, we're gonna help this burden situation. We're gonna help docs. And so that's like, so meaning aligned for me. I end up doing that for six and a half years. [00:09:41] Dr. Emilio Galán: 2017 to [00:09:44] Dr. Emilio Galán: Jan of 2023. It's a startup rollercoaster ride that you read about in the, you know, the Silicon Valley deal. [00:09:50] Dr. Emilio Galán: We raise a hundred million. We hire so many people, [00:09:55] Adam Fishman: you can pay for a lot of people with a hundred million dollars. [00:09:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: I know we can lose a lot of money, but we trying to build the future. So it's like this trade off and they're like, we'll never tell you to go small. [00:10:06] Dr. Emilio Galán: Go big, go big. That's what we're looking to build. It's like, let's go big. And we're also raising that time when it's like, grow, grow, grow. It's like, okay, that's also a good incentive, but there's downsides to those two views, which is like be really strict on the finances, [00:10:22] Dr. Emilio Galán: how important they matter to make sure you are in like arm's reach of profitability. Or at least have like a realistic landing pad to profitability if you're gonna play the high stakes game, and so we're playing that high stakes game. It's just a little bit outta reach. I, I can get to the ending story, but let's give it a little love. It was so [00:10:43] Dr. Emilio Galán: meaningful. So fun. Such a good team. Like, I loved working with these people. [00:10:49] Dr. Emilio Galán: I love playing with these people. [00:10:51] Dr. Emilio Galán: And I would say everyone that we brought into the company was an amazing person. Like it was fun, smart, a lot of pre-meds, a lot of kids that wanted to be docs and they're like, I see what we're doing. [00:11:04] Dr. Emilio Galán: We're helping the future. [00:11:05] Dr. Emilio Galán: And so gotta interact with them. Just a amazing, we do million notes for doctors across the country. There's like 3000 of these installed across the country. There's some hospitals, there's some independent docs. We're helping all kinds of folks And I'm getting to do something that I didn't realize how much I love is the creativity of telling, like the story around what we're doing. And when you get that blended with like, this is a mission-driven company and building something, I just had a lot of energy, passion for that. And so I really love the work, that we did and think it's important work and that it should still happen. it's just the hard learnings [00:11:50] Adam Fishman: Yeah. [00:11:52] Dr. Emilio Galán: gotta be authentic. They're like, this company gonna be the best forever, right? Like, it's just hard to express, here's, here's the things that we really have to address. [00:12:02] Adam Fishman: Yeah. [00:12:03] Dr. Emilio Galán: It's nice to tell like the positive story and there's a place for that. and There's the like, alright, everybody sit down, here's the deal. [00:12:11] Dr. Emilio Galán: It is not about fear. It is about here's what we're dealing and here's what we're gonna do. That's it. It ain't complicated. It's just hard. [00:12:20] Dr. Emilio Galán: that mixed with like really close friendships and hard decisions. [00:12:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like, let go of one of your good friends, you know, let go of five of them, let go of a hundred. You know, it's just like, it just is hard stuff. [00:12:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: so then the board's like, oh boy, what we doing around here? and I'm like, something needs to change. We disagreed about what needed to change. I'm out. [00:12:42] Dr. Emilio Galán: So I get fired and I hold that with, "that's all right" I hold that with some love and tenderness and it caught me a ton. [00:12:51] Dr. Emilio Galán: I don't know how else I would've ended up being a stay at home dad. [00:12:54] Adam Fishman: Yeah. Yeah. [00:12:55] Adam Fishman: My wife started residency in June of that same year. [00:13:02] Dr. Emilio Galán: I got a six month old and like a 20 month old or whatever. [00:13:06] Dr. Emilio Galán: first off, what am I gonna do? [00:13:07] Dr. Emilio Galán: oh, you know what? I'm gonna go out there and build the biggest thing that's ever been built you wanna see you gonna, you fire me? I'm gonna show. [00:13:17] Adam Fishman: Your revenge company. [00:13:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: I go from that to zero, like empty calendars [00:13:22] Dr. Emilio Galán: And it felt like when your water the best I can explain that you're water skiing and then you hit an edge and the water goes up your nose boom face shift. [00:13:31] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm in a totally different environment immediately I'm just disoriented [00:13:37] Dr. Emilio Galán: a different part of me was like, take some time. Okay, take some time. [00:13:41] Dr. Emilio Galán: You've been on the ground for six years. Take some time and breathe. [00:13:46] Dr. Emilio Galán: And then that begins the journey of the stay-at-home dad. [00:13:50] Dr. Emilio Galán: I think at that point, I would not have expected that blah, blah, blah, blip, you know, whatever we are. Three years later, [00:13:56] Dr. Emilio Galán: I couldn't have even imagined it. Uh, and that. [00:13:58] Dr. Emilio Galán: that was a whole experience. [00:14:00] Adam Fishman: So I want to ask you about that process of becoming a stay-at-home dad. But before I do that, I want to come back to something that we kind of skipped past in that story. You like touched on it, So you mentioned that you were out in October and you had a six month old and a 20 month old, which means that while you were building this company, you had two kids, [00:14:20] Adam Fishman: two children were born in the time of you building this company. [00:14:23] Adam Fishman: and I'm guessing because of what you just described with your schedule and the intensity of it, I'm guessing you didn't take a whole lot of time off to be a dad in that [00:14:33] Dr. Emilio Galán: Two days. [00:14:34] Adam Fishman: do you have any regrets about only taking two days of paternity leave? [00:14:37] Dr. Emilio Galán: It was like, I didn't know. [00:14:39] Dr. Emilio Galán: I was like doing the best I could at the moment [00:14:41] Dr. Emilio Galán: I don't have a regret in the sense that. It was kind of cool that I got to be all in on something and then I get to now be all in on this. [00:14:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: I think if I didn't have the all in on the parenting now I would look back and be like, I didn't really make enough space for it [00:14:55] Dr. Emilio Galán: during, like if I was like, let me do it all at the same time. Like I didn't make enough space while I was doing the business, but now that I have this time I look at it more like, oh my God, how much I've learned, [00:15:09] Adam Fishman: Yeah, [00:15:10] Dr. Emilio Galán: how much my priorities have shifted [00:15:12] Adam Fishman: a lot of people in your situation would come out and they would need to start a revenge company. [00:15:17] Adam Fishman: They'd be like, well, I'm gonna show you. [00:15:19] Adam Fishman: I'm gonna go do this again. 'cause this is how I'm wired and I can't get off that treadmill and I just only know this one thing. [00:15:26] Adam Fishman: But you took a beat and decided I'm gonna make a different choice, which I think is actually probably in the minority of dads. Some dads would do this, make that decision and see it as like, admitting defeat in some way, right? [00:15:44] Adam Fishman: Like, my brain's on overdrive and now I'm caring for little kids. So I'm curious what you, the kind of conversations that you and your wife or her name's Megan, the kind of conversations that you and Megan had and the decision making process around like this change for you. [00:16:01] Dr. Emilio Galán: Yeah, [00:16:01] Dr. Emilio Galán: my first reaction, like, there ain't no decision. It wasn't like, there was no like, dear, let's be really, let's figure this out. [00:16:08] Adam Fishman: And I mean, that's okay. [00:16:10] Dr. Emilio Galán: I believe this to be true. She did everything she could to be here and she gone a lot. [00:16:16] Dr. Emilio Galán: So I get to a place where like, for my own sanity and self-protection, I assume I don't have a wife when she shows up, it's a gift. But if I'm like, when are you gonna be home? [00:16:26] Dr. Emilio Galán: When are you gonna take a night with the kids? they got to the point where she's like, yo, the towels are wet. And I'm like, what'd you just say to me, towels are wet. [00:16:35] Dr. Emilio Galán: You know how much I'm here pH I flip the table. you up and do it in this house. And, and like, okay, hold up. We gotta just like care for Resentment. resentments and needs aren't being met. it was a high priority to operate in a way where I don't resent her [00:16:52] Dr. Emilio Galán: as I took on more. And so we talked about that. [00:16:54] Dr. Emilio Galán: maybe the main thing we talked about at the beginning was, I'm gonna do my best to not resent you at the end of this. [00:17:00] Dr. Emilio Galán: that's a high priority for me. Not, not even for you, it is for you too. But for me, from my own experience, how do I need to structure my life so that I don't resent you? [00:17:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: and it kind of came to like, do I pay for people to do all the stuff I want done around here? like The cook and the clean and the, the landscaping and the, you know, fill in all the blanks. [00:17:19] Dr. Emilio Galán: or do I take that on Part of it is I got the four conditions. Okay. [00:17:27] Dr. Emilio Galán: two of those were diagnosed during the company. [00:17:31] Dr. Emilio Galán: this is not a benign experience of grinding as hard in a direction. [00:17:36] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like let's build a rocket ship. [00:17:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: it took a toll. I lost my beard. I just said alopecia areata. It is gone. I got diagnosed with the Crohn's during, [00:17:47] Dr. Emilio Galán: we made peace. my body is all fine. [00:17:50] Dr. Emilio Galán: I like to think of it more like I'm a real sensitive Ferrari. Like when you treat your Ferrari right. [00:17:56] Dr. Emilio Galán: That is amazing. [00:17:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: But you can't just leave the oil in like you could a, a Corolla, [00:18:02] Dr. Emilio Galán: not like a reliable build, you know what I mean? I'm more like a [00:18:05] Adam Fishman: It's sensitive. Finely tuned. [00:18:07] Dr. Emilio Galán: extremely vitally tuned. And, and didn't know that at the beginning. I'm like, that guy's eating hamburgers and milk eggs every day and he has perfectly formed stool. [00:18:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: How is this happening? I ate, you know, some lentils, some rice, and like a salad and I've got all kinds of, [00:18:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: you know, [00:18:25] Adam Fishman: Yeah. You're a mess. You're a mess. [00:18:27] Dr. Emilio Galán: alright. [00:18:28] Dr. Emilio Galán: So that's also a factor. And then I just, there was this voice that said, you know, I care a lot about being authentic and I care a lot about listening to who or maybe discovering who I am. [00:18:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: And so I'm on the Carl Jung, like Gabo mate my guy right now is Marshall Bloomberg or whoever wrote Nonviolent Communication. I'm loving that book. Think, you know, just like shout out. But I'm like, what do I really want? [00:18:54] Dr. Emilio Galán: and what's gonna take care of me? And the revenge company would take care of part of me. we call it, Emilio Jobs. There's like a personality in me. We call it a protector. If you, if you know anything about internal family systems, [00:19:08] Dr. Emilio Galán: I've got these protectors. One of them we talked about Dr. GI there's the Emilio Jobs protector. [00:19:14] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like, I'm gonna be valuable because I'm gonna build a world changing company, or at [00:19:17] Dr. Emilio Galán: least a world renting company. Okay. This is another conversation we had. Okay. Right in this garage actually [00:19:24] Dr. Emilio Galán: was, we're gonna bury Emilio jobs. [00:19:27] Dr. Emilio Galán: Because you're an amazing thing [00:19:31] Dr. Emilio Galán: and [00:19:31] Dr. Emilio Galán: you use parts of me that I really like creativity building, changing my environment, like the story, the meaning of the story. [00:19:42] Adam Fishman: Mm-hmm. [00:19:43] Dr. Emilio Galán: there's a lot of pieces in Emilio jobs that's good for me, not, nothing good for me that I love. I just love, I just love doing. It's why I love so much of the work at Robin. and Emilio job. Don't know Jack about how to take care of me. [00:19:58] Dr. Emilio Galán: it's an earlier iteration of who I want to be And so like I'm integrating that. like Emilio jobs running off building another big company, Try going out, raising money, even though it was an amazing time to do it. 'cause then boom, AI hits or just, you know, GPT hits and you're like, dude, bro, you wanna build the same company but you've got all the tools now. [00:20:21] Dr. Emilio Galán: Voice transcription and like meaning extraction, all that [00:20:24] Dr. Emilio Galán: Literally GPT writes the note, [00:20:27] Dr. Emilio Galán: to take care of me, like I gotta be in balance. And so there's a wonderful part of this story. 12 months after we decide not to go back on the treadmill, [00:20:37] Dr. Emilio Galán: together. One year later I'm off the Humira for the first [00:20:43] Dr. Emilio Galán: time in like years, [00:20:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: the ankylosing spondylitis is all in check. [00:20:47] Dr. Emilio Galán: I get an MRI of my total spine ankylosing a bad deal. [00:20:51] Dr. Emilio Galán: to do that, Running off and building a revenge company for Ultimate Glory doesn't really fit the bill. [00:20:58] Adam Fishman: Yeah. Kind of hard to pick up your kids when your spine is made of bamboo, [00:21:04] Dr. Emilio Galán: there's a whole routine of gotta [00:21:06] Dr. Emilio Galán: take care of myself. stretching. Yeah. [00:21:08] Adam Fishman: I wanna talk about how you take care of yourself in a minute. before that I want to ask you about the dopamine desert. now I'm trying to find contentment in the dopamine desert as a stay-at-home dad. [00:21:21] Adam Fishman: What is a dopamine desert? [00:21:23] Dr. Emilio Galán: All right. You fall, boom. You get the water up the nose. now you're in the lake and you're like, the hell, where am I? And then you wake up, your calendar is empty. [00:21:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: Not anybody gonna call me thinking I'm important. the only thing that's calling is the needs of my babies. that S-H-I-T work is so anti dopamine. [00:21:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: How many times am I gonna clean the same table? How many times is it gonna be spilled on and shaken on? [00:21:53] Dr. Emilio Galán: how many times am I gonna order diapers? Are we got, It's so much but someone needs to do that. That's all in the, someone needs to do category. Like I wanna get called about what the new marketing plan is. [00:22:04] Dr. Emilio Galán: I wanna get called about what we're building next, what the product. [00:22:08] Dr. Emilio Galán: I wanna have a meeting with six people and be like, ah, what do you think? Boom, boom, boom. Let's put it on the whiteboard. [00:22:12] Adam Fishman: Yeah. [00:22:13] Dr. Emilio Galán: Fun building. Meaningful, important, like quote unquote, like all this stuff. Remember this guy like, [00:22:19] Dr. Emilio Galán: Ooh, I like [00:22:20] Dr. Emilio Galán: like him [00:22:20] Adam Fishman: G. [00:22:21] Dr. Emilio Galán: Dr.G and Emilio jobs. Don't give two SHS about diapers. There is no finish to this thing. [00:22:28] Dr. Emilio Galán: I can actually make progress towards a goal. [00:22:31] Dr. Emilio Galán: This is just a daily t. [00:22:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: And so [00:22:35] Dr. Emilio Galán: the dopamine desert is like, I'm used to having an IV feed of dopamine because I get called all day every day by my team and like, what unimportant things. And now I'm in the desert, think of the kids. And it's like, I'm parked, I'm so thirsty. Like, That's the desert. And so I get into day trading and I'm like, I can fit day trading into like [00:23:01] Adam Fishman: between diaper [00:23:02] Dr. Emilio Galán: in between diet. I can do that. [00:23:04] Dr. Emilio Galán: I got a friend. And so he and I go back and forth every day like, what are you trading? What are you trading? Let's do this thing. what I thought might occupy like, Hmm, yeah, that'll fit real nice in all buckets was like in my brain, like a Cordyceps, [00:23:17] Dr. Emilio Galán: mushroom. [00:23:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: It's like, [00:23:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: oh, I'm f you up all day. I'm like, come to be present with my kid. Let's play. Wonder what the market, [00:23:27] Adam Fishman: I wonder if I should be trading futures on soybeans right [00:23:30] Dr. Emilio Galán: Well, it's fine. We set the rules. I'm only gonna do two trades a day [00:23:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: but wonder what's happening? [00:23:35] Dr. Emilio Galán: I am not present. I've been cordyceps right through the skull. [00:23:39] Dr. Emilio Galán: I need more oof [00:23:43] Dr. Emilio Galán: I was used to such a high load and the kids are like, yo pops, you see this block right here? I'm gonna take 30 minutes to walk this block. Your pops take this leaf out. [00:23:56] Dr. Emilio Galán: Take this [00:23:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: leaf out. [00:23:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: And they're like, this leaf. Isn't that crazy? You know? And this guy don't care about any of that. [00:24:06] Dr. Emilio Galán: every day you do that and slowly it's like the brain's, like, we used to be on, you know, 10 grams of dopamine day. [00:24:15] Dr. Emilio Galán: per day. [00:24:16] Dr. Emilio Galán: Now we've been getting a 0.3. It just goes down, like the base level goes down, how much you need to feel it [00:24:24] Dr. Emilio Galán: out of that just reset. So there's maybe the de but it's just like, there's the, the reset of what is meaningful to me. [00:24:32] Dr. Emilio Galán: Ooh, a butterfly, that's awesome. A butterfly. And it's like, boom. It's like. got a little dopamine. Just the fact that I put a little butterfly thing out, [00:24:41] Dr. Emilio Galán: it feels surprisingly good [00:24:43] Dr. Emilio Galán: [00:24:43] Dr. Emilio Galán: to plant a garden and see a little garden just kinda grow. [00:24:49] Dr. Emilio Galán: And so that's reset and I don't have like the daily pull. so there's something good about that, which allows me to then be present. [00:24:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: that had a major influence on me being able to get off the Humira. which my doctor's like, don't be crazy. You better not say that. [00:25:05] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like you got as you just stay on Humira the whole life, that's the deal. And it's like, [00:25:11] Adam Fishman: apparently not. [00:25:12] Dr. Emilio Galán: I, respect you, but I was off it for a year and then I went back to medical school to finish that last year. So I could tell you that story at some [00:25:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: point. [00:25:19] Dr. Emilio Galán: I wanna talk about health because you've mentioned now a few times that the four autoimmune disorders having to take Humira, you were on it, you said, for like 20 years. Right? And Humira helps with Crohn's, it helps with AS, it helps with all these, things. and now you don't have to do that anymore. [00:25:37] Adam Fishman: I'm curious how you take care of yourself now. So obviously there's less stress, less like dopamine pressure, less franticness, everything's kind of slowed down for you. But also you mentioned to me this thing called the Happy Body method, [00:25:53] Adam Fishman: which I have a feeling that this is something that you practice or brought into your life. [00:25:57] Adam Fishman: So can you tell me a little bit about like how that works in conjunction with [00:26:01] Adam Fishman: taking care of yourself? [00:26:03] Dr. Emilio Galán: this is maybe like. How to take care of myself. The things I learned as a stay at home dad, like if there was a chapter in my story [00:26:11] Dr. Emilio Galán: of the last three years, it's how to take care of myself in that first year. It just becomes a priority. Like the, maybe the main objective, if I can take care of myself, I don't even mean to say it was intentional. [00:26:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: It just had to happen [00:26:27] Dr. Emilio Galán: One lesson early is like, no, taking care of myself is not binge watching this TV show and like shoving ice cream, that's like, feels good not taking care. Like, like the difference [00:26:39] Dr. Emilio Galán: between the things became obvious. and I lean towards the take care way anyhow, but like, what's actually gonna take care of me given my physical kind of sensitive tuning. [00:26:52] Dr. Emilio Galán: I was slowing down there is nowhere I have to be today. And so if my kids and I make it at the grocery store at 2:00 PM or at 3:30 PM it's fine. we're just flowing that's how it feels. I'm not saying I did that, like I'm gonna make this happen. [00:27:13] Dr. Emilio Galán: It's just, that's how it feels now relative to like, if I gotta be somewhere at like three and it's 11, my brain's already going like, make sure to get home, make sure to get changed. [00:27:23] Dr. Emilio Galán: Make sure to get all the food, bring snacks. Don't leave snacks. You may need an extra chi. change of clothes. Did you remember the goggles? [00:27:30] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like there, there starts to become like a to do thing [00:27:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: Okay, so slow down. So slow down is the, is a big one. the exercise is huge. And so happy body is this thing made by Jersey and, and Gregor. [00:27:43] Dr. Emilio Galán: Gregor. [00:27:44] Dr. Emilio Galán: They're like Oish world champion. [00:27:47] Adam Fishman: Oh yeah. Power lifters. Yeah. [00:27:49] Dr. Emilio Galán: Uh, and they're Olympic weightlifters. It's not a it's like very specific moves, [00:27:54] Dr. Emilio Galán: so they're snatch champs, their book begins with like, how do you become 85 and move like a ballroom dancer? I'm like, oh, well, you know, I'm like on the path of FU spine and so I like the idea of polar dancer. That sounds good. And they're like, rule number one, flexibility. Don't give a crap about how big your bicep is or how big your pecs are. Flexibility. You see these kids, they run around and they're just like clenching and bonking and bending. They're so flexible. [00:28:27] Dr. Emilio Galán: It makes them resilient to injury. All kinds of things. And so number one thing is flexibility. I'm like, I like what you're saying and I'm surprised I haven't heard that, but I think you're right. and when you've got like just the spine situation that I have, [00:28:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: you're like hypersensitive to like what can help with the spine. And so they're like, yeah, you want your spine to be just this fluid whip. You can just snatch, whip up. I'm like, I do really want that. there's 18 exercises that you do every day. like, you do it every single day. It takes 15 minutes if you're kind of going just focused on it. [00:29:06] Dr. Emilio Galán: I was like, I think I can do that. I think I can do 18 x-rays. I met, so then I met with Jersey for two years. every week I went to his house in Woodside. getting taught this thing and just, you know, the dude's a master. [00:29:20] Dr. Emilio Galán: in terms of like the body, a lot of famous people use him. it's a cool thing. So they have this thing happy body and I think most of you can teach yourself and if they have a really complicated situation, like they know how to deal with that. So, okay. Alright, come on. Let's do this thing just real quick, real quick. This [00:29:38] Adam Fishman: We're getting a live demo. [00:29:39] Dr. Emilio Galán: this is like me before, I mean, [00:29:43] Adam Fishman: Whoa. [00:29:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm okay. I'm gonna keep these legs straight [00:29:46] Dr. Emilio Galán: just to be like straight to the ground, fly hands. And the whole, mo the whole happy body can be summarized and you wanna be able to do this. Hands up, down, you see like, you [00:29:59] Dr. Emilio Galán: want this like little like kind of butt curve in the spine and then hands up. [00:30:03] Dr. Emilio Galán: And if you can do this move with weight, really, if you [00:30:07] Dr. Emilio Galán: can do this move period, you've got the flexibility and the ankles, the knees, the buttocks, the hips, the low spine. The upper spine. a lot of folks are like this, but I can do squats. [00:30:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: You wanna be able to bring it all like this. That's, that's the test of flexibility. [00:30:22] Dr. Emilio Galán: And then you add weight to that basically. that takes like whatever. It's like I've been with the guy for now. Two some years and I've been doing the stretches every day I feel like I have an extremely flexible body. [00:30:36] Adam Fishman: [00:30:36] Adam Fishman: I would say. [00:30:37] Dr. Emilio Galán: After you hit flexibility, then it becomes about complex compound motion, like the snatch [00:30:46] Dr. Emilio Galán: boom or a little kid in and out of the crib every day. [00:30:50] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like, oh my God, the crib is so deep. Why? And then so snatch and like those complex. And then after that it, I learned last from him. I'm sure he has more teach me, with that. it. Then it's about strength. [00:31:06] Dr. Emilio Galán: You wanna be able to do that with heavier and heavier stuff. [00:31:08] Dr. Emilio Galán: and then food, I'd say is the last thing. [00:31:10] Dr. Emilio Galán: So in, in our house we eat what we call worm food. [00:31:14] Adam Fishman: Okay. [00:31:15] Adam Fishman: What's worm food? [00:31:17] Dr. Emilio Galán: it's to set expectations with the kids. Like it's not about tasting good. It's about feeling like taking [00:31:24] Dr. Emilio Galán: care of yourself. [00:31:26] Dr. Emilio Galán: And so if it don't taste like dirt, it ain't worm food is the thing that I'll just, you know, throw out there. you know, we do our best, but it's just to try and set expectations with them. [00:31:35] Adam Fishman: Cool. I love that. I'm gonna go take a look at this Happy Body Method now after this, [00:31:40] Adam Fishman: We'll link to it in the show notes. okay. I wanted to change topics for a second I told you there about the guy that contacted me before, you know, before we even started recording today. [00:31:51] Adam Fishman: there are a lot of founders who listen to this show. They're either dads or moms who are on the cusp of having kids, or they've got the young kids and they're wondering. either, is this the right move or did I just make a huge mistake? [00:32:10] Dr. Emilio Galán: The mistake being, having the kiddo. [00:32:12] Adam Fishman: Yeah. The mistake being, trying to build a company and have a kid at the same time, or have multiple kids at the same time. [00:32:17] Adam Fishman: knowing all that you've known, you've, you've kind of done it all. Now, your kids are still young, so they're getting older, but, you've been inside a company, you've been inside a company with kids, you kind of pushed yourself. You've had all these health issues, and you stay at home, dad. Now, what advice would you offer to folks who are in that position sort of early thinking about kids, maybe they got young kids, you know, from your perspective as a founder and a father, what, what sort of advice would you offer those folks? [00:32:46] Dr. Emilio Galán: The first thing that popped was like, it's gonna be hard. It's just tectonic plates [00:32:53] Adam Fishman: Yeah. [00:32:55] Adam Fishman: And those are the tectonic plates of company and family, [00:32:58] Dr. Emilio Galán: company and family just, [00:32:59] Dr. Emilio Galán: there ain't no like, ooh, there's a nice puzzle piece. It's like your real life over here and your real life over there, and they're smashing. [00:33:07] Dr. Emilio Galán: The next thing that came out was like this, like self, read. Just like well get your priorities straight. have the real, you know, just make the decisions, like what's your exit strategy? Who do you have around you? Who can you rely on? What's your executive team like? [00:33:20] Dr. Emilio Galán: How much of what you're doing is about feeding the ego situation that was created a long time ago and how much of what you're doing is like actually taking care of you [00:33:28] Dr. Emilio Galán: find someone you trust. To really talk about this on a weekly basis or something like that. Like [00:33:35] Dr. Emilio Galán: that. [00:33:35] Dr. Emilio Galán: I don't really care who it is. It could be a mentor, it could be an advisor, it could be a CEO coach, it can be a therapist, it can be a whatever. consuming this podcast, which is like mass therapy in some sense. [00:33:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like, get in a situation where you can actually express the stuff that's hard to say. [00:33:53] Dr. Emilio Galán: That's vulnerable. [00:33:55] Dr. Emilio Galán: but we just gotta be hard and push faster. [00:33:56] Dr. Emilio Galán: And like if like there's just so much you're under so much. [00:34:02] Dr. Emilio Galán: Just find someone you trust that you think they maybe could support me in navigating [00:34:10] Dr. Emilio Galán: this journey. I think that's maybe that the most important thing [00:34:15] Adam Fishman: Okay, so those two things that I heard, just to recap for folks, one is recognize that it's hard. It's really hard. You described the tectonic plates. Love that analogy. And then the second one is because it's hard. Find someone that you trust who can support you in navigating that journey. And it doesn't matter who that person is, as long as you can trust them and they can support you or somebody who will listen to you [00:34:40] Dr. Emilio Galán: and you feel like you can say the things that are really hard to say, [00:34:47] Dr. Emilio Galán: when I say trust, I mean the person that you could like do that and hopefully someone who can then receive that [00:34:54] Dr. Emilio Galán: reflect to you so that you are doing one of these. [00:34:57] Adam Fishman: okay. Cool. That's great advice. Thank you. I wanna talk about a couple of the methods or frameworks that you follow as a dad. You mentioned them very briefly already, internal family systems and nonviolent communication, [00:35:10] Adam Fishman: and you said you've got the book on nonviolent communication right now. [00:35:13] Adam Fishman: Can you tell me about nonviolent communication? It sounds like you know what's the opposite? The opposite of that would be violent communication. That doesn't sound great. So what? What's nonviolent communication? [00:35:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: can I just give a brief background on the journey to non-violent communication? [00:35:31] Dr. Emilio Galán: Okay. It's like, get fired. What's the first thing I consume? It's Jordan Peterson. responsibility, like ownership, truth telling. Be honest. stand up straight with your shoulders back. Like, I'm gonna find my [00:35:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: oomph. [00:35:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: But I need to balance this out. So when I go to the, to the mama of the Jordan situation, which is Brene Brown, [00:35:55] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm like, vulnerability, courage to lead, dare to lead. [00:35:58] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like what is courage? Vulnera, you know, all that. Ali, one of my CEO coaches moved me in that direction, so I appreciate him. He got that part started. Thank you, Ali.so then it goes to Brene. It's like vulnerability, shame, connection. Then I find Gabor mate, [00:36:14] Dr. Emilio Galán: doctor from Canada, who was like hospice homeless. [00:36:19] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like he's done, workaholic, self-proclaimed has really effed up this tectonic battle a [00:36:26] Dr. Emilio Galán: lot in his own life. Probably still is 'cause he's just out stumping all the time. I find like a Jordan meets Renee combo [00:36:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: there. it gets into some child psychology with Becky Kennedy and Becky's the one that's like Internal Family Systems [00:36:41] Dr. Emilio Galán: is the one that introduced me to that. And I'm like, oh, money, I like that. And then I start doing my 50 50 thing with the guy who's helping me do this. And um, with Josh, shout out and he. [00:36:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: like you should read non Communication. But that was after him giving me a number of good books. I had no expectations of Nonviolent Communication. I was like, I don't like the title, but I'll read it. 'cause you send me good stuff. [00:37:07] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm halfway through it. [00:37:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: I read it as a part of my nap routine. Every day when I get the nap and there's a little, there's a hammock that goes between these two posts right here. [00:37:17] Dr. Emilio Galán: And so I set up the hammock and I get my little, right now it's nonviolent communication. We're reading and, um, nonviolent communication. Like it could be renamed. I'm not at the point where I can rename it, but the things in the thought cloud are like vulnerable, honest, thorough communication. [00:37:36] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like there's, so what the deal is, like something happens. I'll give an example. So we have a little project we're working on. I take my dad there earlier. We work on this thing for like three months. but like the threads of it go back multiple years, since we moved to this town, uh, San Carlos. And so anyways, it's like a long coming project and it's starting to but it's starting to create fruit. There's like visible, tangible stuff from the project. It's this little clinic. we're doing a little doctor's office on our block basically. [00:38:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: it's more like a creative art express. It is more in that category. [00:38:13] Dr. Emilio Galán: So I wanna like put it in an appropriate place. I take him there and my dad check this out and he is like, cool. [00:38:22] Adam Fishman: that's it. That's all you got. [00:38:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: we were having breakfast and I started thinking like, I wanna express this in a nonviolent communication way. how do I do that? And I'm still learning. And it is hard [00:38:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: to do it strings together, multiple vulnerable pieces you first observe. So first you have to have like the ability, like, what's happening in my life that's affecting me. [00:38:42] Dr. Emilio Galán: So I observed that I had this interaction with my dad that wasn't like full circle. Hmm. [00:38:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: For me. [00:38:49] Dr. Emilio Galán: after you observe, you see what are the feelings that were affected or coming up, anger, fear, sadness. Those are the most common three, but there's a whole bunch of them [00:38:58] Dr. Emilio Galán: and in the book they've got a list of them. those are the big three for us. Fear, sadness, and anger, and. I'm not angry, I'm sad, I'm not afraid from that experience, but I'm sad because he and I love connecting on projects. [00:39:15] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like it's one of the areas that we just love to connect as father and son [00:39:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: there's the, what is my need? You go from the emotion to the [00:39:22] Dr. Emilio Galán: need, what is my need? [00:39:24] Dr. Emilio Galán: I guess I'm doing a lot in my life with these tectonic plates. The dopamine desert. I no longer feel like I'm so thirsty. [00:39:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: I love to be creative, I love to create and there's a certain me that gets to express itself, that wants to express itself. [00:39:44] Dr. Emilio Galán: And I get to do that a little bit with you here, Adam. And so let's just pause a minute. Thank you for giving me some space to express this creative part of me. this is not my day-to-day stay at home dad mode. We play Monster, we jump on the trampoline monster's probably the closest where I'm chasing them, [00:40:02] Dr. Emilio Galán: so I get to express parts of me. and so I think my need is, to celebrate the creativity that I get to do in the ways I get to do it now. [00:40:15] Dr. Emilio Galán: then you go from the need to the request. And the request is this is the hardest one. I one. I got no means. I'll take care of myself. [00:40:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: That's how I like to be [00:40:27] Dr. Emilio Galán: my friend. okay, then you can be in an igloo. It's like, I made a sick ass igloo. People visit me in my igloo it's awesome. [00:40:36] Dr. Emilio Galán: got like the comfy couches and the [00:40:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: foam [00:40:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: and it's making the igloo. [00:40:41] Dr. Emilio Galán: and people come here and I'm like, I don't need you, but I'm glad you're here. And it gets to this very much like unattached, no expectations, goodness of the world. and like the Bava Gita kind of style, [00:40:56] Dr. Emilio Galán: like unattached, [00:40:58] Dr. Emilio Galán: my request is that we would find time [00:41:00] Dr. Emilio Galán: to [00:41:01] Dr. Emilio Galán: connect around these creative things that I get to do. I'd love to sit in the clinic with you and just hear your thoughts about what I'm thinking there [00:41:11] Dr. Emilio Galán: My heart feels good about just what, what we just said. [00:41:13] Adam Fishman: Yeah. [00:41:14] Adam Fishman: And your need isn't like appreciation. [00:41:16] Dr. Emilio Galán: It's like what I need is somebody to just observe that this is happening Yeah, [00:41:21] Dr. Emilio Galán: like celebrate creativity in my life, [00:41:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: which looks so different than what it used to look like, which [00:41:28] Dr. Emilio Galán: got celebrated like crazy, [00:41:30] Adam Fishman: [00:41:30] Dr. Emilio Galán: right? You in the startup game, [00:41:32] Adam Fishman: Everybody's celebrating everybody. You're killing it all the [00:41:35] Dr. Emilio Galán: and your family's happy. You just made good money. [00:41:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: You raised a bunch of cash. People are like, there's champagne events [00:41:41] Dr. Emilio Galán: and now like, stay at home dad. Life ain't celebrated. [00:41:45] Adam Fishman: okay. So nonviolent communication, observation, feeling, need, and request. Those are kind of the four pillars of like a conversation [00:41:56] Adam Fishman: I wanted to know, given that you practice these nonviolent communications internally, internal family systems and things like that, I'm curious, [00:42:08] Adam Fishman: how did you. Your wife get on the same page about following this approach, or was she kind of just like, whatever you need, you do it and just let me know, like, how, how did that work? [00:42:21] Dr. Emilio Galán: here's what happens with my wife. When I I'm going through this [00:42:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm bringing it to her because it's, I'm trying to fit it into the day to day, let's say [00:42:29] Dr. Emilio Galán: like I'm trying to apply it and integrate it [00:42:32] Dr. Emilio Galán: she's giving me the celebration. [00:42:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: we're connecting and celebrating that change in growth and she'll be like. I just can't believe how much you change and I can't believe how quickly you're growing. And like, you know, I wanna believe that when I got fired I called myself being like, um, soiled. Like I [00:42:50] Dr. Emilio Galán: soiled myself in the shameful, but like, also like, there's good things in soil, right? [00:42:54] Dr. Emilio Galán: I think, I hope I'm getting fertilized. And then I have this idea of like, okay, I'm starting to grow. And that took like a year maybe, and she'd be no, I think you're a treat and you're providing shade. And so she's like celebrating and building [00:43:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: me up, [00:43:10] Dr. Emilio Galán: taking care of me in that way. my psychiatrist friend, it's Josh and I, we've spent a lot of time like coworking through this. [00:43:19] Dr. Emilio Galán: How do I apply this in my life? So that's been very present. [00:43:22] Dr. Emilio Galán: before we go, I do wanna say I'm grateful It's fun to be able to talk about these topics with you. [00:43:28] Adam Fishman: I agree. That's why I do this show. I love this stuff. before we do end, I have a few things. One is I'm gonna get to the taco episode and I want to know what the taco episode was, but sounds like this is an epic story. But before we do that, there's two contrarian takes that you have that I really want to get through. [00:43:49] Adam Fishman: The first one is Shy does not Exist, and the second one is Wipe the Butt. [00:43:55] Adam Fishman: And so tell me about Shy Does not exist and wipe the butt. [00:44:00] Dr. Emilio Galán: shy does not exist. Stop blaming the kid. It's not helpful. It's not helpful to create a complex in the kid [00:44:08] Dr. Emilio Galán: or to blame them. They're gonna carry that and they're gonna be like, oh, I'm just shy. And it's like, excuse, excuse, excuse. It's fine. I also don't buy extrovert introverted as much as is like marketed. [00:44:20] Dr. Emilio Galán: they will figure out who they are. The problem is not the kid's shyness. The problem is the environment's Safety. Make the environment safe. Don't blame your kid for being shy. And so like you go into a new school and you're like, Hey, nice to meet you. [00:44:35] Dr. Emilio Galán: Yeah, this is Johnny. And it's like, oh, he is just shy. And Johnny's like what is happening? And You drag me here to a place I don't even know. So there's some expectations I can just tell. You have some expectations of me. I'm gonna stay here. Is that what you're thinking? [00:44:49] Dr. Emilio Galán: I don't wanna stay. Anyway, so there's a whole lot happening. But also I just don't know these people [00:44:54] Dr. Emilio Galán: And like chimpanzee bands, they go and they murder each. Like we don't, we know the people we know. It feels good to know them. Like it's not a natural phenomenon in our evolutionary brain to be dropped with a bunch of strangers and feel safe. [00:45:08] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like we've moved towards that globally and like as we've become. But that's like in the last whatever, right? 300 years or whatever you wanna say. [00:45:19] Dr. Emilio Galán: Not for the million. And so. It's more like my job, the way I view my job with my kids [00:45:27] Dr. Emilio Galán: is that when I go into the school I'm like, yo, yo, yo. [00:45:32] Dr. Emilio Galán: What's up Oh, teach how Good to see you. Teacher Christina. Teacher Christina. So nice to meet you. My name's Emelia. So nice to meet you. Yoyo. What up, Johnny? Hey Arnie. What's up? High five. Wow. I like that. Now, I don't wanna overshadow the kids, [00:45:47] Dr. Emilio Galán: Right. [00:45:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like they don't have the space to be them, but like this is a safe place. And the way that I establish that safety is the key. The key is what I say to my kids the key. uh. Know the person's name and say hi and use their name. Just no other person's name and say hi and use their name. Christina. Teacher. Christina, nice to see your Teacher Christina. And I just say that every day [00:46:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: Will it work out? I don't know. It's an experiment. Like, I don't know some of these things, but I do believe strongly it's not the kids' fault. They're not shy. I know it's uncomfortable when your kid is being such a hider, like it feels weird, like I'm being judged. I haven't done a good job. [00:46:28] Dr. Emilio Galán: I know that's like a hard feeling, but taking care of them and honestly taking care of yourself Ultimate is not about, I'm not trying to teach it. I'm saying how I view it is that it feels hard, but I wanna take care of them. And I think making the environment more safe with our neighbors, with our teachers, with the, [00:46:49] Dr. Emilio Galán: in every environment that they end up being in is like raises to the level of, one of my top three things [00:46:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: is like. Belonging and community and connection and begins with knowing each other's names and saying hi. [00:47:05] Dr. Emilio Galán: that's what I try and do when we go. So that's why I don't believe in shy, [00:47:07] Adam Fishman: Okay. Now tell me about Wipe the Butt. [00:47:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: Wipe [00:47:10] Dr. Emilio Galán: the [00:47:10] Dr. Emilio Galán: butt. [00:47:11] Dr. Emilio Galán: is like your potty training. You have to, you're gonna have to figure out what your strategy is. And it's just a hard situation. [00:47:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: You don't wanna do it. They don't wanna do it. No [00:47:20] Dr. Emilio Galán: one wants to do poop, but you wanna get out the diapers. and some learn it quick, some don't learn it quick. How long will you wipe their butt? Like that's like the question. It's like, and at what point are you like, [00:47:31] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm done with wiping butts. [00:47:33] Dr. Emilio Galán: You gotta wipe your own butt. And like there's like this like anger re like, I don't wanna do it. And why are you taking seon? you're using me. I know you're using me. [00:47:40] Dr. Emilio Galán: You're taking advantage of me. 'cause I know you can, [00:47:43] Dr. Emilio Galán: when you go to school, I know you did it. Or when you're with so and so, I know you do it and then you asking me to do it still and it doesn't feel good, it doesn't take care of me. Okay. This is like a fundamental, like, do you do what they say or do you do what they ask? How much do you give to them? [00:48:00] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like, they're like, I don't want that spoon. Do you give them the new spoon? [00:48:02] Dr. Emilio Galán: I don't want, and where do you draw the lines? [00:48:05] Dr. Emilio Galán: lines are when it's their safety. [00:48:07] Dr. Emilio Galán: when it's not safe, then you step in your number one job is to keep them safe. [00:48:11] Dr. Emilio Galán: That's a fine statement. That's not where the battleground is. [00:48:15] Dr. Emilio Galán: you just made quesadillas. They want refried beans, they want chicken nuggets, they want whatever. Do you keep giving or where you're like, no f you. [00:48:22] Dr. Emilio Galán: And then, you know, when you f you them, they f you back and like. How many battles do I want to get through? How do I get through those [00:48:30] Dr. Emilio Galán: and where are my line lines? Like, no, it is time for bed [00:48:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: and like, I'm just gonna pick you up and drop you in. Or like, that's not safe. I'm gonna take that out. I don't even wanna use the word safe there 'cause it muddies it. [00:48:41] Dr. Emilio Galán: It's like, it's not where there's critical safety. How many pieces of gum. My son one day had seven pieces of gum consecutively and I was like, I don't know where the line is, but I'm not interested in like policing gum use. you know what happens. is We don't have gum in our house no more. [00:48:58] Adam Fishman: Yeah. [00:48:58] Dr. Emilio Galán: no gum here because I, [00:49:00] Adam Fishman: it all. [00:49:00] Dr. Emilio Galán: and I didn't rebuy it [00:49:02] Dr. Emilio Galán: and it, because I don't wanna have, I don't wanna live that experience [00:49:05] Dr. Emilio Galán: again. wipe the butt is like, I want it inside out. Style, core memory embedded in their brain. I will always help you. you're 15, you're 16, you went to a party, you drank a little alcohol. How did it happen? You know, it's fine. You, [00:49:22] Dr. Emilio Galán: whatever, it happened, things [00:49:23] Dr. Emilio Galán: happen. [00:49:24] Adam Fishman: us has not been [00:49:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: Who is not, and now you're in a little bit of trouble. And who are you gonna call? I didn't get upset about how many times you asked me to wipe your ass. my job's to keep you safe. so my kids will say, will you wipe my butt? And I'm like, I appreciate it when you wipe your butt. can you do that? And I appreciate that. Even if you just try first. If you just [00:49:43] Dr. Emilio Galán: try, that fills my bucket. [00:49:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: That's the whole thing. [00:49:46] Dr. Emilio Galán: Fill the bucket. [00:49:47] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'll say something like. It seems really important to you today that I do [00:49:51] Dr. Emilio Galán: it. [00:49:52] Dr. Emilio Galán: I would appreciate if next time you did it yourself. [00:49:56] Dr. Emilio Galán: 'cause that takes care of me. And that has like a 90% hit rate. [00:50:00] Dr. Emilio Galán: we all have vulnerable parts of us that are more baby like. [00:50:04] Adam Fishman: Yep. [00:50:05] Dr. Emilio Galán: and then like things that we're really [00:50:07] Dr. Emilio Galán: respect and grown up about and like, no shame on the child. I'm not judging, I think this is for me. [00:50:14] Adam Fishman: it's a metaphor or it's an example of what's happening in your life, but that can be extrapolated to any sort of situation where you're wondering if you should hold the line. My example would be like, my son who is older than your kids, makes his lunch for school every day [00:50:31] Adam Fishman: and occasionally he's just doesn't wanna do it. [00:50:35] Adam Fishman: And could we argue about it or could we just have that kind of conversation that you just described? And probably the outcome would be great. [00:50:43] Adam Fishman: Okay. I gotta know before we get to lightning round, and I'm hoping you have a few minutes for lightning round, [00:50:51] Adam Fishman: what is the Taco episode? [00:50:53] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm just gonna insert, I get off Humira earlier I was like, you got off Humira. [00:50:58] Dr. Emilio Galán: And I'm like, I did. But there's like a sadness in me. I got back on Humira [00:51:03] Dr. Emilio Galán: when I went back to medical school [00:51:05] Dr. Emilio Galán: one year in the stay at home dad land. I get off [00:51:08] Dr. Emilio Galán: and I'm feeling great. And if I manage my inflammation slash stress, like [00:51:14] Dr. Emilio Galán: those two are so related below this bar, I will not have a Ferrari breakdown. [00:51:22] Dr. Emilio Galán: And the Ferrari breakdowns like [00:51:24] Dr. Emilio Galán: a flare. [00:51:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: in the inflammatory kind of family is flare. So I have a flare. so I'm like just cruising down here. [00:51:32] Dr. Emilio Galán: the day before I start medical school, [00:51:37] Adam Fishman: Oh, man. [00:51:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: sit through the barrier [00:51:41] Dr. Emilio Galán: with such speed and I had like gotten everything set up and I got all my, my stethoscope back. It's been, I go back eight years after finishing. I did squeeze in that extra couple [00:51:52] Adam Fishman: You were the new high watermark for how long? How long you can wait. [00:51:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: So eight years. Thank you. Lee Jones, who helped make that happen. It was totally the right thing. It was so great to go back, but the Ferrari just broke [00:52:07] Dr. Emilio Galán: down. double anterior uveitis. I never had double, I'm on steroid eyedrops and weekly Humira for The entire time I'm in medical school. [00:52:20] Adam Fishman: Whoa. So that was like what, another year or two or something or, [00:52:24] Dr. Emilio Galán: so basically from March of 2024 until March of 2025, and then it takes like another two months ago, my eyes got cleared. [00:52:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: So let's say it's like 16 months or whatever. Humira eye drops, Things are just breaking. The Ferrari is down. I'm loving the days in the hospital. [00:52:50] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm important and I'm smart and I'm figuring things [00:52:52] Adam Fishman: Yep. [00:52:53] Dr. Emilio Galán: and I get to work with the team, [00:52:54] Adam Fishman: it's stroking the Dr. G fragment there. [00:52:58] Dr. Emilio Galán: creativity, smartness, [00:52:59] Dr. Emilio Galán: connection. it's not just the ego. [00:53:01] Dr. Emilio Galán: It's like ego is the suit that has things I like inside, but also is pretty stiff and my body breaks down. [00:53:08] Dr. Emilio Galán: And so anyway, I just, I wanted to get that out three months after I graduate. So I'm now Dr. G [00:53:16] Dr. Emilio Galán: after I graduate. It was like a nice childhood dream. It completes a circle. My mom hooded me, my kids were there. It was awesome. [00:53:23] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm off the [00:53:24] Dr. Emilio Galán: eyedrops. I was on steroid eyedrops eight times a day, like just keeping [00:53:28] Dr. Emilio Galán: the time. Eight times a day is SHIT. So off Humira we're at like once every other week, but I'm optimistic. And so, play with my kids, stay healthy are probably my two biggest things. Okay. So [00:53:46] Dr. Emilio Galán: that's, I guess, what is the, [00:53:48] Adam Fishman: the Taco [00:53:49] Adam Fishman: episode. [00:53:50] Dr. Emilio Galán: All right. I'm in dopamine desert. [00:53:53] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm learning like, Where's dopamine dust in the stay at home dad world? [00:53:58] Dr. Emilio Galán: And so I'm like, I'm gonna make a nice dinner. [00:54:02] Adam Fishman: and is that nice dinner gonna be tacos? [00:54:04] Dr. Emilio Galán: you know, the taco setup [00:54:06] Dr. Emilio Galán: you got the whole taco bar and there's like [00:54:08] Dr. Emilio Galán: cool things like, ooh, little jackfruit, a little [00:54:11] Dr. Emilio Galán: whatever. Like, okay. So I'm gonna do a taco with like the homemade, the guac, because my wife is supposed to be home at. whatever, five. [00:54:21] Dr. Emilio Galán: And that's like enough, That's like a nice thing for me. [00:54:24] Dr. Emilio Galán: there's a little bit of like, I want to achieve something in this. There's a little bit of caretaker miss it me. Like, I wanna make something nice for my [00:54:31] Dr. Emilio Galán: wife. My kids are young, [00:54:33] Adam Fishman: You said first year, so these, they're [00:54:35] Adam Fishman: both under two probably. [00:54:36] Dr. Emilio Galán: very, very close to [00:54:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: that. Like everything set up. And if you ever seen a kid, deal with a soft taco, [00:54:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: you [00:54:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: realize it was a mistake. [00:54:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: It was a design mistake from the beginning. [00:54:50] Dr. Emilio Galán: Give him a bowl, put some rice in it, but no taco thing that they have to hold and manipulate [00:54:55] Dr. Emilio Galán: and get the bite. [00:54:56] Adam Fishman: it's gonna all come out the other end. Then they're [00:54:58] Adam Fishman: gonna get upset. [00:54:59] Dr. Emilio Galán: She didn't even have dinner with us. [00:55:00] Dr. Emilio Galán: and I made this damn dinner. Like, so there's like that going on under the hood. Like I did it. [00:55:06] Dr. Emilio Galán: There was resentment. [00:55:08] Dr. Emilio Galán: I overextended. I should not have made it in the state I was in. I probably should have hit some hot pockets, baked some pizza. [00:55:15] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like keep it easy, don't extend myself. I'm just trying to take care of myself. [00:55:19] Dr. Emilio Galán: then my son taught me, my son's like pops. You know? It just keeps, it just keeps spill everywhere. And then he looks at me and he's frustrated. I have all this expectation. Well you better enjoy this thing. [00:55:36] Dr. Emilio Galán: and then he takes thing, chucks it. [00:55:39] Dr. Emilio Galán: right in my right in my face. really excellent toss, by the [00:55:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: way, [00:55:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: by [00:55:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: hand. [00:55:46] Adam Fishman: Yeah. Little side arm. [00:55:47] Dr. Emilio Galán: I can't believe I'm not Einstein. Steve Jobs and Dr. [00:55:51] Dr. Emilio Galán: Galán [00:55:52] Dr. Emilio Galán: all at the same time. I'm here dealing with this SHIT, and I could have been, you know what? I could have been, you know what I could do, you know what I used to do [00:56:03] Dr. Emilio Galán: And I'm here doing what? And just like all of this, just rejection of my experience [00:56:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: shows up as like expletive, F word, [00:56:13] Dr. Emilio Galán: And The number of times I've sworn in like that in front of my kids is like two, [00:56:20] Dr. Emilio Galán: two times is just like, I've hit the max, [00:56:24] Dr. Emilio Galán: my brain is going to explode, and it does. I just explode. And it's like, and then after it, you're still there. [00:56:33] Dr. Emilio Galán: You still gotta deal with it. [00:56:35] Dr. Emilio Galán: and then you're immediately taught by life. That wasn't the right reaction [00:56:40] Dr. Emilio Galán: something needed to be said, but that's not gonna take care of 'em. [00:56:43] Adam Fishman: Okay. That is. An amazing story and a great way to end this episode. Uh, how can people follow along or be helpful to you if they're listening to this? [00:56:56] Dr. Emilio Galán: I got no clue. Um, I don't use the phone. I try and keep my screen time very [00:57:02] Dr. Emilio Galán: low. you got an addicted brain like me, right? [00:57:06] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm used to reading emails all day [00:57:07] Dr. Emilio Galán: and like [00:57:08] Adam Fishman: in the dopamine desert. [00:57:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm in the desert. [00:57:11] Dr. Emilio Galán: It would be fun to do more conversations like this. I could say that. [00:57:14] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'm trying to figure out how to make enough money. I'm living off startup [00:57:19] Dr. Emilio Galán: cash and that's not bad. But it's not good. It's not like I'm gonna be around forever, you know what I mean? [00:57:25] Dr. Emilio Galán: Like you're borrowing from your future. So what I got five years of runway. That's nice. But also it'd be nice to have infinite runway and then like at some point you gotta figure out how to pay kids colleges and whatnot. And [00:57:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: so if you use all your runway, whatever. and so I'm trying to figure out how to make 250 KA year as a stay at home dad. My assumption is I'm gonna build it. [00:57:50] Adam Fishman: Okay. Have you heard of OnlyFans? I'm just kidding. [00:57:54] Dr. Emilio Galán: I had to think and now I know. Yes. Um, and I've thought about, okay, well what if I just produce some kind of content? [00:58:04] Dr. Emilio Galán: But my concern is I'll end up like the day trader. [00:58:08] Adam Fishman: You will. [00:58:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: Okay. Thank you. Thank you for validating that. [00:58:11] Dr. Emilio Galán: No [00:58:11] Dr. Emilio Galán: one's been able to tell me. [00:58:13] Adam Fishman: content treadmill, man. [00:58:14] Adam Fishman: Once you get on, you can't get off. [00:58:16] Dr. Emilio Galán: so yeah, I'm working through that. [00:58:17] Adam Fishman: Okay. Well, if somebody's got some ideas, I'll have 'em reach out. they will find you. okay. You ready for lightning round? [00:58:24] Adam Fishman: All right. [00:58:25] Adam Fishman: This is gonna be a great one. Uh, what is the most indispensable parenting product you've ever purchased? [00:58:31] Dr. Emilio Galán: one that you put in the child's butt that's supposed to release the gas, [00:58:35] Dr. Emilio Galán: it's it's like the Frida straw or [00:58:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: something. [00:58:39] Dr. Emilio Galán: For kids that are gassy or colicky or whatever. [00:58:41] Dr. Emilio Galán: All of the, [00:58:42] Adam Fishman: Okay. Okay. That doesn't work, is what you're saying. [00:58:46] Dr. Emilio Galán: if It does, it ain't worth it. [00:58:51] Dr. Emilio Galán: what you have to do to make it work. [00:58:53] Adam Fishman: Yeah. Yeah. You, you had me at [00:58:56] Adam Fishman: the very first description of that, the, butt Frida, [00:58:59] Adam Fishman: uh, 'cause we've talked about the nose Frida on this show, and, and this is not that, this goes in a different spot. Okay. Uh, what is the weirdest thing you've ever found in your kids' pockets or in the washing machine? [00:59:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: there's a lot of stuff, but nothing like, figurines, there's money, there's gum, there's food. [00:59:16] Dr. Emilio Galán: Nothing [00:59:17] Dr. Emilio Galán: jumps out [00:59:17] Dr. Emilio Galán: as like, [00:59:18] Adam Fishman: Okay. Uh, what is your signature? Dad's superpower. Okay. [00:59:22] Dr. Emilio Galán: time [00:59:24] Adam Fishman: If your kids had to describe you in one word, what would it be? [00:59:28] Dr. Emilio Galán: monster. [00:59:30] Adam Fishman: Because you play monster with him. Yeah. Uh, what is the most frustrating thing that has ever happened to you as a dad? Maybe that was the taco episode. [00:59:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: hit that. [00:59:39] Adam Fishman: Okay. Taco episode. What is your go-to dad? Wardrobe. [00:59:44] Dr. Emilio Galán: Wait, what I'm wearing right [00:59:44] Dr. Emilio Galán: now, which [00:59:46] Dr. Emilio Galán: I do one [00:59:46] Dr. Emilio Galán: second on it. Okay. You gotta get these stretchy pants that you can like work out in, walk out in, I sleep in these, I just wear them constantly, uh, and I'll wear them like three days straight. [00:59:58] Adam Fishman: Yep. [00:59:59] Dr. Emilio Galán: It's just don't [01:00:00] Dr. Emilio Galán: judge me. [01:00:00] Adam Fishman: mater. Sweatshirt. [01:00:02] Dr. Emilio Galán: And then this, this changes up. It's just cold the day. [01:00:05] Adam Fishman: Yep. [01:00:06] Dr. Emilio Galán: to hit you up with, can I just, [01:00:07] Dr. Emilio Galán: since you brought, [01:00:08] Adam Fishman: me. [01:00:09] Dr. Emilio Galán: I wanna hit you up with some fishing. [01:00:11] Adam Fishman: Oh, okay. [01:00:12] Dr. Emilio Galán: fishing. We go to Minnesota. We fish [01:00:14] Dr. Emilio Galán: every year. So this is, this is, our Ben's bait represent. [01:00:18] Adam Fishman: Wait, why Minnesota is your wife from there? [01:00:21] Dr. Emilio Galán: mom, [01:00:21] Dr. Emilio Galán: my Mom is, [01:00:22] Adam Fishman: is from there. [01:00:23] Dr. Emilio Galán: and so we go and, and go to a lake every year. [01:00:26] Dr. Emilio Galán: Yeah. [01:00:26] Adam Fishman: Awesome. All right. What is the strangest food that your kids have ever made you try? [01:00:32] Dr. Emilio Galán: okay. We made ginger juice, [01:00:35] Adam Fishman: Okay. [01:00:36] Dr. Emilio Galán: like we pressure [01:00:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: cold press some ginger [01:00:40] Dr. Emilio Galán: into a concentrated cup. I didn't know that I should use the word concentrated when we did it, [01:00:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: but then you have some ginger juice [01:00:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: and they're like, drink [01:00:49] Dr. Emilio Galán: it. [01:00:50] Adam Fishman: Oh, [01:00:51] Dr. Emilio Galán: aab. It's a, it's a [01:00:53] Adam Fishman: you're supposed [01:00:53] Adam Fishman: to dilute it, I [01:00:54] Dr. Emilio Galán: salivating a lot, you know, but just straight general. it's not like the strangest, but it can do [01:01:01] Adam Fishman: oh, love that. Uh, and a warning for all the other dads out there who may be making ginger juice. [01:01:05] Dr. Emilio Galán: [01:01:05] Adam Fishman: what is the most difficult kids TV show that you've ever had to sit through? [01:01:11] Dr. Emilio Galán: Uh, super kitties. [01:01:13] Adam Fishman: Super [01:01:13] Dr. Emilio Galán: the age, what the age, why is it a favorite number one. [01:01:18] Dr. Emilio Galán: Why is it a favorite and like, who comes up with this garbage. [01:01:22] Adam Fishman: Yeah. Yeah. Well, the people not living in the dopamine desert, that's for [01:01:27] Adam Fishman: what is your favorite kid's movie? [01:01:29] Dr. Emilio Galán: Land before time hit us. [01:01:31] Dr. Emilio Galán: I think there's just so much there to like come out with like a, now we're better for it. [01:01:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: like there's so much to and so much scariness where the Dad at the whole time? And then the mom is the one and so that's all good. my son has asked for it three times [01:01:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: and we've healed a bit from it, [01:01:51] Dr. Emilio Galán: I would hit up Daniel Tiger any day of the week and it's not a movie, but they, maybe they have movie length [01:01:59] Dr. Emilio Galán: ones. [01:01:59] Adam Fishman: lessons in that one. Yeah. [01:02:01] Dr. Emilio Galán: that's what I appreciate at this point. [01:02:03] Adam Fishman: Okay, good. [01:02:04] Dr. Emilio Galán: the [01:02:04] Adam Fishman: Uh, is there a nostalgic movie that you just can't wait to force your kids to watch? [01:02:10] Adam Fishman: Jumanji. [01:02:11] Adam Fishman: Like the Robin Williams version? [01:02:13] Adam Fishman: Yeah. [01:02:14] Dr. Emilio Galán: I put it up and my wife and my sister like, are you crazy? What, five and three. My brother gets on the line. he's like, you are outta your mind. You cannot be hitting them with your minds right now. I'm like, well, I'm missing some. Robin [01:02:27] Adam Fishman: I know it's pretty good. Yeah. Well you were like, well, it's either Jumanji or it's gonna be Dead Poet Society. One of those two. [01:02:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: Is it gonna be, [01:02:35] Dr. Emilio Galán: Patch [01:02:35] Adam Fishman: Adams another good one. [01:02:37] Dr. Emilio Galán: Patch Adams? I've been recently talking big about five times. think that already? [01:02:41] Adam Fishman: No, I don't think there's a single [01:02:44] Dr. Emilio Galán: I don't know. It's, [01:02:45] Adam Fishman: movie that they could be. [01:02:46] Dr. Emilio Galán: is just being killed by a T-Rex, [01:02:49] Adam Fishman: Nah. [01:02:49] Dr. Emilio Galán: not like that. But [01:02:51] Adam Fishman: Maybe Aladdin, they could watch Aladdin. That's about all you're [01:02:53] Dr. Emilio Galán: you got Jasmine. [01:02:55] Adam Fishman: I know. [01:02:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: You got Jasmine? I got a five-year-old daughter, [01:03:00] Adam Fishman: right, you're right. Okay. [01:03:01] Dr. Emilio Galán: so it's like, there's just problem. I'll [01:03:03] Dr. Emilio Galán: hit up a Moana. Oh, I liked Raya. [01:03:06] Dr. Emilio Galán: You know, [01:03:07] Adam Fishman: And the last dragon. [01:03:08] Adam Fishman: See, I know all these movies. I've seen 'em all. guess that's why I do this show. Uh, what is the worst experience you have ever had? Assembling a kid's toy or a piece of furniture. [01:03:19] Dr. Emilio Galán: It's hard to answer that directly. I'll say my kids, their mattresses are on the ground. I'm not totally comfortable with it, but it is such, so much goodness. They just run and [01:03:30] Dr. Emilio Galán: they don't hit anything. [01:03:31] Adam Fishman: Easier to change those sheets too. Not gonna lie. [01:03:34] Dr. Emilio Galán: thank you for bringing that up. Changing the sheets, especially when you're going through a potty train [01:03:38] Dr. Emilio Galán: phase and like night [01:03:39] Dr. Emilio Galán: training every day. You got, you gotta get the freaking washer dryer [01:03:44] Dr. Emilio Galán: up in the hood because you got, you gotta have it running every [01:03:47] Adam Fishman: yep, [01:03:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: yeah, I'll leave it with that. [01:03:49] Adam Fishman: Okay. Uh, how often do you tell your kids back in my day stories? Or have those even started yet? [01:03:55] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'll say what other people do. I'll use that. Like Uh, might do [01:04:00] Adam Fishman: it's code for a back in my day [01:04:02] Dr. Emilio Galán: not, not necessarily like what another adult, okay. It's like, should my kids say please and thank you? Like, should they be the most polite robot? And I don't, not using robot in a judgy way, I just should that be like a must. [01:04:14] Dr. Emilio Galán: And so if they're like, Hey Papa, will you please do this? I'm gonna help you no matter what, back to wipe the butt. [01:04:19] Dr. Emilio Galán: I'll help you no matter what, but what other. Adults or people might say is, I'm not going to help you. And so it's good to practice so that you can have everything you want in the world. I'll do back in my day, not more like this one time you wouldn't believe what [01:04:35] Dr. Emilio Galán: I did. [01:04:36] Adam Fishman: okay. [01:04:37] Dr. Emilio Galán: Yeah, that can, [01:04:37] Adam Fishman: time you wouldn't believe you hit me in the face with a taco. [01:04:40] Dr. Emilio Galán: And it'll be like this one time, like when I was little, man, I was so scared. [01:04:45] Dr. Emilio Galán: And I would, I would do like that. [01:04:46] Adam Fishman: Mm, gotcha. [01:04:48] Dr. Emilio Galán: Yeah. [01:04:49] Adam Fishman: To end. What is your take on minivans? [01:04:54] Dr. Emilio Galán: I can't wait to have one. [01:04:56] Adam Fishman: Oh, all right. [01:04:57] Dr. Emilio Galán: We need one, but we're gonna be moving somewhat this year, like we're doing part-time in another place [01:05:03] Adam Fishman: Yep. [01:05:03] Dr. Emilio Galán: our next car will be a minivan. Um, for sure. [01:05:07] Adam Fishman: Okay. You heard it here first, folks. It's coming. He can't wait.
