- 0:58Welcome to another episode of Bible Women in Bathrobes.
- 1:07I'm your host, Tamara K.
- 1:08Anderson.
- 1:09And joining me today is a wonderful woman, warrior of light, Amy Johnson.
- 1:15Amy, thank you for being here today.
- 1:16I am thrilled to be here and.
- 1:20I am thrilled to have you.
- 1:21And we are so excited to talk about this unique title of Jesus Christ as we've talked about him being the son of God.
- 1:30That was last episode and today we get to talk about him being the son of Mary.
- 1:38And we we see little glimpses of Mary throughout the New Testament of who she was and how she was chosen.
- 1:49In fact, we've talked about her quite a bit in our series Voices of the Nativity right before Christmas this last year.
- 1:56So if you really want to dive into, there's several episodes there, episode 50, 51, 52 and then 56 giving birth, the Nativity.
- 2:07And then we even had a great episode at the beginning of this year, episode 62, where we talked about Joseph and Mary going and trying to find him when they left him at the temple.
- 2:19And so we may tie in some things from those episodes just kind of harken back to what were some of the lessons he learned.
- 2:25And we'll also bring in some new things that we haven't talked about yet about Mary and her example.
- 2:32So Amy, I'm going to throw this at you and just say thoughts from the beginning about Mary and who she was and what Jesus learned from her and probably Joseph as well, but particularly Mary since next week is
- 2:55Mother's Day is is and any thoughts?
- 3:00You know, it's funny because when I was raising my children, I have four sons.
- 3:03And so when I was raising my and a daughter, I shouldn't leave her out.
- 3:07But when I was raising my sons specifically I would tell them you know, you need to be looking for the right kind of spouse.
- 3:17You need to be looking for the right kind of person.
- 3:21But later I started talking to them about need to be worried about being the right kind of person.
- 3:27But it's interesting now that they're parents sometimes, every once in a while I'll get a prompting kind of to tell them, you need to worry more about being the right kind of parent than just being a parent.
- 3:42So I had, I had, I have one who's struggling.
- 3:46I haven't felt prompted to tell him that.
- 3:47But then I had another who was trying to have a baby and took a couple months.
- 3:50And I was like, you need to be more concerned about being the right kind of parent than just being a parent.
- 3:56And when you look at Mary and you look at her life, the very first thing the angel says to you, to her is, the Lord is with you.
- 4:07And to me, I'm like, she said, there's no better way to be a good mother than to have the Lord with you.
- 4:18Because all the things you don't know, you're not going to find what you need to raise a child in this sin saturated world online.
- 4:27That's going to be really tough.
- 4:29But you will find it on your knees.
- 4:32And that's work too.
- 4:34But you'll get better answers if the Lord is with you.
- 4:38And so in, in Luke chapter one, we read that angel comes and he says, blessed art thou.
- 4:46Hail thou that are highly favored.
- 4:49The Lord is with thee.
- 4:51Blessed art thou among women in verse 28.
- 4:56And I love that if we just said nothing else about Mary, that's enough, that's enough.
- 5:04Yeah, there's a lot more to say, but that's enough.
- 5:08I love that, that, that the Lord is with thee.
- 5:12And I think she was a great example of walking with God through all of this, through this unexpected pregnancy for which she could have died.
- 5:27I mean, they, they could have stoned her.
- 5:30According to their law, a woman found pregnant without being married, she could have died.
- 5:35So she was putting her life on the line by saying, be it unto me according to thy will.
- 5:40That's another, that's submission.
- 5:42So she had God with her.
- 5:43She was will to submit to whatever got happened in her life.
- 5:49And that takes courage, which is another quality.
- 5:52Right.
- 5:52And so not only could she have died being stoned, but she.
- 5:57People die in childbirth.
- 5:59It happens.
- 6:00Not as much now, but it happens.
- 6:03So, and she was young, she had no experience with that.
- 6:07That's a scary thing to be like, okay, so today I'm not, tomorrow I Will be pregnant now.
- 6:15What?
- 6:15Right.
- 6:15That's a scary thing.
- 6:17So the courage and the submission, I love that.
- 6:21Those are great qualities.
- 6:24Yeah, they.
- 6:25They really, really are.
- 6:26And, and you pause and think Jesus needed examples of that in his life, of being close to the Lord, having courage, submitting to his life's work, which was not going to be easy.
- 6:43And, and, and I also think about being persecuted and having to flee to Egypt.
- 6:50That was something difficult.
- 6:53And, you know, knowing that I can do hard things with God, I can leave the country where I was born, where everything is familiar, and go somewhere and God is going to go with me on that journey and
- 7:07I'll be okay.
- 7:08I mean, what a great lesson.
- 7:09I know that.
- 7:10My parents sure taught me that lesson when I was 8 years old.
- 7:19We were living in Virginia at the time, and my dad was asked to be a mission leader for our church in Argentina.
- 7:26And so they picked up all of us.
- 7:29I was the oldest of four girls.
- 7:31My youngest sister was two at the time.
- 7:34And they picked us up and we moved to Cordoba, Argentina, for three years.
- 7:39And I look back on that, and our family has had to pick up and move several times.
- 7:45And I have children with autism.
- 7:47And I just remember learning that from my parents.
- 7:50That was that hard.
- 7:52Oh, so hard.
- 7:54I didn't speak Spanish at the time I learned it.
- 7:57Right.
- 7:58But it was hard to pick up and move and go somewhere and not know what to expect.
- 8:04But we were trying to do God's work, you know, doesn't mean it wasn't hard.
- 8:09And so Jesus learned that from his parents, just like I learned that from my parents.
- 8:14And so I think that we learn so much watching our parents.
- 8:18And of course, God was very careful about where he placed his son.
- 8:22You know, he knew that Mary and Joseph were going to be amazing parents.
- 8:27Perfect.
- 8:28No, none of us have perfect parents here on earth.
- 8:31No.
- 8:32So it's okay, right, though, Because God can make up the difference.
- 8:38Jesus can make up the difference.
- 8:40Right.
- 8:40And so I love.
- 8:42I love that example of this.
- 8:45And then it's interesting back then, because they were a poor family and because they were outside of.
- 8:57Especially when Jesus was very young, they were outside of Judaism, you know, outside of their culture.
- 9:06Mary and Joseph probably took on a lot of the education of young Jesus and teaching him their spiritual rituals and practices and teaching him about the Passover and stuff like that.
- 9:22Which leads us to the Passover story, right, of them going to the Passover when Jesus was 12 and then him staying there, and Joseph and Mary, of course, frantically looking for him and Then Jesus, in his wisdom, even
- 9:40at 12, I mean, I can't even imagine what it would have been like to be his mother.
- 9:44But he told them, how is it that ye sought me, wished ye not, that I must be about my Father's business?
- 9:53And then in, in the following verses, in verse 51, and, and he went with them back to Nazareth and.
- 10:02And was subject unto them.
- 10:05But her, his mother, kept all these things in her heart.
- 10:08She knew who he was.
- 10:10And he, even though he knew what his calling was, and he knew, he knew enough to be talking to the priests in the temple, you know, I mean, he knew a lot at age 12, but, but he was
- 10:26subject unto them, you know, he submitted to his parents.
- 10:33Anyway, if you want to build on that or go to the next story, I'm happy to hear any comments.
- 10:37Well, I also think too that that thing you just dropped just quickly about Mary pondering in her heart kept these things that's said a couple times about Mary.
- 10:49Excuse me.
- 10:50And I think it's important to note that that's.
- 10:54That just pondering and being with the Lord, just sitting in it for a minute is, Is really how the relationship with God grows.
- 11:09It's that sitting in it like, okay, and, and, and sometimes I may have known.
- 11:21Been known to, and may know people who do ruminate over negative thoughts.
- 11:30But when we keep and ponder the things of God, then we grow in strength and wisdom and virtue and courage and compassion and love and all of these godlike, Christlike characteristics.
- 11:45And so I think Mary is an excellent example of, I'm gonna just ponder these things and that's what's going to be what ruminates in my soul.
- 11:59Oh, I love that so much.
- 12:01That is such a beautiful observation.
- 12:04And you know what's funny is we can then take that and see examples of it in Jesus's life.
- 12:09How many times are there in the scriptures where Jesus stepped away and, you know, woke up early and he went into the wilderness to ponder, to pray?
- 12:19He probably learned that from his mother.
- 12:22You know, and we learn a lot by example, right?
- 12:25More than by preaching.
- 12:28And so you watch.
- 12:31I remember hearing a story years ago of someone whose uncle had died being killed in the war.
- 12:40Maybe it's been a long time.
- 12:42So I think that's what it was.
- 12:43And they went in and to their.
- 12:46They went to the door of their mother's room and she was on her knees weeping.
- 12:51Things like that teach a really big lesson.
- 12:57Can you be found turning to God when you're grieving, when things aren't working the way you want them to work.
- 13:06Can you be found grieving to God?
- 13:10Or are you ruminating to yourself?
- 13:15Or are you gossiping to someone else?
- 13:18Like, where?
- 13:19And I'm not saying that the.
- 13:21That talking to someone else, not God, doesn't have its place, because it does, and that's its own thing.
- 13:27But your children need to see when life is so heavy that it forces me to grieve, or that's when I'm on my knees and that I.
- 13:39I understand that being on my knees is the only way I'm going to get lifted back up onto my feet.
- 13:44They need to see that.
- 13:45And I believe that.
- 13:46I believe that Mary probably was a pretty good example of that.
- 13:51Based on this, the small record we have.
- 13:56That is so beautiful.
- 13:58I.
- 13:59I'm so glad you.
- 14:00You brought that out.
- 14:02Let's skip to the story of the wedding.
- 14:04And, yeah, this is a beautiful story.
- 14:09And it's right before Jesus.
- 14:11Well, we believe it's right before Jesus launches into his ministry.
- 14:14It was before he was supposed to be doing miracles and stuff like that.
- 14:18Right.
- 14:19And so it sounds like Mary was in charge of part of this wedding.
- 14:23And of course, they ran out of wine, which was awful.
- 14:28Shouldn't happen at a wedding.
- 14:30And Mary panicking probably was like, dear God, how do I solve this?
- 14:35You know?
- 14:36And I'm sure maybe the thought came, who do you have with you there that can help you?
- 14:45And.
- 14:46And I love this story.
- 14:47If you want to follow along, we're in John, chapter two.
- 14:50And Jesus was.
- 14:52So Jesus had already called his disciples.
- 14:54They were with him at the wedding here.
- 14:58And Mary calls Jesus and.
- 15:04And Jesus said unto her in verse four, woman, what have I to do with thee?
- 15:09Mine hours not yet come.
- 15:10Basically, he's saying, what do you want me to do?
- 15:13And I love, love Mary's response here in the scriptures, so simple, so powerful, and yet she knows who he is.
- 15:23She knows what he can do.
- 15:25He says his mother saith unto the servants.
- 15:29Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
- 15:36Whatever.
- 15:36Don't you think that's such a huge lesson in empowering our children?
- 15:39Oh, yes.
- 15:41Like to trust enough to say, he's got this.
- 15:48That's.
- 15:49That's.
- 15:49That's something that is really awesome to me to be able to look and say, he's got this.
- 15:57Yeah.
- 15:58And delegate.
- 16:00You know, it's sometimes as moms, I don't know about you, but we can always do things quickly and more efficiently than our kids, especially when they lollygag and don't want to do their Chores.
- 16:14And there's times when I really feel like pulling my hair out.
- 16:17Sometimes I'm just like, oh, for the love of all that is holy.
- 16:20Just with the dishes, you know, you've been delaying for three hours now and, you know, would it be easier for me to do them?
- 16:29Yes.
- 16:32It's going to take me five minutes or less.
- 16:34You know what I mean?
- 16:35I'm like, oh, but I love that she knew what Jesus was capable of, and she also knew of his divinity.
- 16:44She knew that whatever he touched, he could fix, he could heal.
- 16:50And I love that she knew her Son and she believed in him.
- 16:58So, so good.
- 17:00I love it, too.
- 17:01And I.
- 17:01But I do think sometimes we lose sight of the fact that while our children are not the Son of God or the daughter of God directly, like we talk about Jesus, they're divine, too.
- 17:13And if we've taught them to.
- 17:15To sit with the Lord and to talk to the Lord and to hear the voice of the Lord and to have the Lord with them, then they have the power, just like we do, to go ahead and reach
- 17:29up and find out what his will is and then do it.
- 17:34And I think we don't.
- 17:36I don't think we give them quite enough empower, empowering in that way.
- 17:42And Mary, Mary did.
- 17:44She just was like, what?
- 17:45He.
- 17:45Whatever he says, do it.
- 17:47And she just trusted it would be okay.
- 17:49Or maybe she didn't trust.
- 17:50I don't know.
- 17:51Maybe she was like, just do what.
- 17:53She says, please, Jesus.
- 17:55I don't know.
- 17:56Make an exception.
- 17:57I'm your mother.
- 17:59I don't know.
- 18:00Like, maybe.
- 18:01Maybe she wasn't quite sure what he could really do, but maybe she trusted that he could and so she just gave it to him.
- 18:09Yeah, I don't know, which is an interesting thought as well.
- 18:13But I also love this, that when.
- 18:20When we allow others to step up and step into leaning on God, miracles can happen like water turning to wine.
- 18:30Now, obviously, I don't think I'm going to have that miracle in my life, but I have seen miracles in my life.
- 18:37I've seen in the lives of my children.
- 18:41And knowing that God can work miracles and trusting that he can work miracles, not knowing what the miracle will be.
- 18:51Right.
- 18:52You know, and that's what.
- 18:53That's what I think we see that kind of faith in Mary right here.
- 18:58I know Jesus can do it.
- 19:00Whatever he does, whatever he says, do it right, and everything will work out the way it's supposed to.
- 19:07Everything.
- 19:08I don't know how it's going to work out, but Jesus but it'll all work out.
- 19:11It'll all work out.
- 19:12And later, as they go through the story of how the water turns to wine and everything, they talk about the water pots.
- 19:18And I.
- 19:20I have a lot of notes in my scriptures because I like to look at myself as the water pot.
- 19:25And so I look at the water pot, and they filled an ordinary water pot with living water.
- 19:34And that's when the miracle happens, and I become the miracle just because I, like Mary said, whatever he says that I will do.
- 19:50And so as I do that, then I change and I become the miracle, which is, I think, the biggest miracle of all, because the elements of the earth obey humans, not so much.
- 20:05We kind of.
- 20:06We kind of struggle and so changing.
- 20:08And I think I've even mentioned this before because it's really.
- 20:11That truly is the miracle to me, is changing hearts without taking away free will.
- 20:16That is a real miracle.
- 20:19Yes.
- 20:20Yeah.
- 20:21Yeah.
- 20:21I recorded a podcast episode with a friend just this past week, and she's launching a podcast about miracles.
- 20:29And as I prayed about what I should share, I.
- 20:32I felt like I should share about what happens when the miracle you pray for doesn't happen.
- 20:39Maybe you don't get the miracle you want, but you get the miracle you need.
- 20:44And I share that story, you know, of.
- 20:47Of me wanting my children to be healed from autism, but getting the miracle of God instead, changing my heart and soul to heal from grief.
- 21:00That this was a different life than I expected.
- 21:03But coming to lean on him and trust in him, that was the miracle I needed.
- 21:08I needed to know that I could lean on Jesus no matter what, and I'm thankful.
- 21:15That's the miracle.
- 21:16Well, so now look at that and take Mary and go.
- 21:20Okay, what was the miracle?
- 21:21Mary wanted her son to be crucified.
- 21:24No, but what was the miracle?
- 21:28Mary needed her son to be crucified and resurrected so that she could be resurrected.
- 21:37Yeah.
- 21:38Did she?
- 21:39Was that what she wanted?
- 21:41No.
- 21:42But was that what she needed?
- 21:43Yes.
- 21:44And then.
- 21:45And if you look at the big picture as God can see it as best we can, then you get to see what I really.
- 21:54What was really in my best interest versus what I thought I wanted.
- 21:59Oh, that is so, so good.
- 22:05Since you've gone ahead to the crucifixion, that was one other story where we see so beautifully Mary's grief at this time.
- 22:14I mean, I can't even imagine how she must have felt kneeling at the cross, watching this son of whom she saw so many, from whom she saw so many miracles.
- 22:26She'd seen Angels, she's seen miracles by her son.
- 22:31And here she knew he had brought people back to life.
- 22:34Yeah.
- 22:34Oh, yes, right.
- 22:37And yet here he was suffering and dying, and, oh, the grief on her poor heart at this time.
- 22:46And yet I love that even in Jesus's moment of greatest suffering, he remembered his mother.
- 22:58And he looked down and saw her and looked on her with love and compassion and care.
- 23:08And it says in verse 25, now, there stood by the cross, Jesus his mother and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Cleophas and Mary Magdalene, where when Jesus therefore saw his mother and the disciples standing by whom
- 23:24he loved.
- 23:25So he's talking about John.
- 23:27He saith unto his mother, woman, behold thy son.
- 23:31And then saith he to the disciple, behold thy mother.
- 23:35And from that hour, that disciple took her into his own home.
- 23:39And so he's.
- 23:41He's loving, he's seeing her.
- 23:44He knows that one of his responsibilities as the oldest son is to watch and care for his mother.
- 23:52That's interesting to think about, though, because Jesus had siblings.
- 23:59And I've never really put.
- 24:01I never really pondered on that before, but he had siblings, and yet he turns her over to John.
- 24:09Yeah, And I think the reason he did that, because I pondered this, I think the reason he put her in the care of John is when John, when Jesus asked his disciples what they wanted, most of them wanted
- 24:22to come with him as quickly as they could and be with him.
- 24:25But John wanted to stay and do God's work on the earth, and so he stayed.
- 24:31And so Jesus knew that all of his other apostles were going to die, but John was going to stay.
- 24:37And so John could stay and take care of his mom.
- 24:40But what do you think happened to his actual siblings?
- 24:43Oh, well, you know what I mean.
- 24:44Because where are they?
- 24:47Yeah, well, we know several of them were his disciples, and there was persecution going on, and so I'd have to research it.
- 24:56I haven't.
- 24:56That's an interesting thought, though, that I've never really thought about.
- 24:58But now, because I've moved away from my family, I feel that feeling of, wait.
- 25:08I'm usually the one who's.
- 25:12Who's going to be there if I'm not.
- 25:16And even just last weekend, last week, my dad was in the hospital, and I had just left Utah.
- 25:23I had only been home for like a day or two.
- 25:26And he went to the hospital, and my mom, I knew was there.
- 25:30And all I kept thinking was, dang, who's going to be there?
- 25:35That would be me.
- 25:36I would be the one.
- 25:39But it was good.
- 25:44I have siblings.
- 25:45They did good.
- 25:46We.
- 25:46There's six of us left in Utah, so they did good.
- 25:49And.
- 25:50But.
- 25:50But there's an ache thinking, ah, who's going to be there?
- 25:57Who's going to take care of things?
- 25:59Yeah.
- 26:01And I don't know.
- 26:04There's just so much we can just.
- 26:05If you just looked at those three verses in John right there, you could learn so much about Jesus and Mary's relationship.
- 26:14So much.
- 26:16Because she also obeyed and went with John.
- 26:23Yeah, that's true.
- 26:25She trusted.
- 26:26She trusted her son.
- 26:27It went against tradition, but she trusted.
- 26:31Because that's why I said, where were his siblings?
- 26:34That.
- 26:35That's who should have taken over.
- 26:37His actual siblings, his blood.
- 26:40But instead he went.
- 26:41She went with John.
- 26:42Yeah.
- 26:43Yeah.
- 26:44Jesus knew John would take care of her, and he did.
- 26:47Right.
- 26:48And Mary trusted Jesus, that that was what was to be done.
- 26:52And I think it goes again to the empowering a little bit.
- 26:56Let her.
- 26:56We got to let our kids grow up and trust them.
- 27:00I take counsel for my children all the time in my family.
- 27:04I don't.
- 27:06They're adults, and we don't have a hierarchy so much anymore.
- 27:10It's.
- 27:11They've.
- 27:11Their frontal cortexes are all developed, so.
- 27:15And I've taught them the best I could, how to hear the voice of the Lord.
- 27:19So I counsel with my kids all the time.
- 27:21Yeah.
- 27:22Yeah.
- 27:23Well.
- 27:23And it's also trusting that God is going to get them through whatever their journey looks like, whether they're following God's path or whether they're on a prodigal journey, that God still sees them and will be with them through
- 27:42ever what.
- 27:43Through whatever their journey looks like, you know.
- 27:46And so was this what Mary anticipated Jesus's life would look like?
- 27:52Maybe she knew.
- 27:53I'm sure she did, looking at the Passover and stuff like that, that this was all a symbol of Christ, but how hard it was to live through it.
- 28:02But then how glorious.
- 28:03The resurrection.
- 28:04Right.
- 28:05That, that.
- 28:06And so I think that's.
- 28:07That's one of the things I love from the story of Jesus, son of Mary, is from her he got his mortality, his ability to die.
- 28:19And he obviously, being God, had the capacity that no other child of God on this earth has ever had.
- 28:29And that is the ability to rise again.
- 28:33Yeah.
- 28:34You know, when we were studying this, I actually, I had the impression that she's what gave him the mortality.
- 28:43And I have given my kids a lot of my mortality, for better or for worse.
- 28:50And he didn't resent her or hate her or it Wasn't a bad thing.
- 28:58He didn't treat her like it was a bad thing, that he got his mortality from her.
- 29:04That is, that is something that bears pondering, doesn't it?
- 29:08I've been thinking about it a lot, so I don't know.
- 29:11But I do think it's a beautiful thing that mother and son could come together and figure out how to trust one another pretty implicitly.
- 29:22Yeah, it's, it's a beautiful story.
- 29:26And Jesus loved his mother so much.
- 29:30He loved him so much.
- 29:32So much.
- 29:33Right.
- 29:33But they both loved God oh, so much.
- 29:38And that's where, that's where relationships are built.
- 29:43You, you can't love fully each other until you love God fully.
- 29:48It's just where they're built.
- 29:50Yeah, that brings it.
- 29:52That ties in that first rate commandment.
- 29:54You know, in the very beginning of her story, the Lord was with her.
- 29:58Yeah, it does.
- 30:00It does.
- 30:01Oh, that is beautiful and powerful, Amy.
- 30:04That is a perfect tying up of this episode.
- 30:10They loved God more and they said, that's my takeaway.
- 30:15Oh, love that so much.
- 30:20My goodness.
- 30:21I think what I love about Mary also is her willingness to submit to all things.
- 30:31And Jesus got that from her as well.
- 30:34And I have had to learn that the hard way because I didn't want to submit to all things that my life has brought me through.
- 30:44But in the end, I got the miracle I needed and that was the softening of my heart and helping me look to God for a more eternal perspective, learning to trust him more than I trust my heart and
- 31:02dreams, because whatever he wants is ultimately for my good.
- 31:07So.
