- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to A Peek Inside Gator Football. Allie Peek here,
- 0:04Speaker 1: joined today by Jerry Hamilton of On Texas Football. Really
- 0:08Speaker 1: excited to get into this Florida-Texas matchup. This video is
- 0:11Speaker 1: brought to you by PrizePix. Don't forget, new users can
- 0:14Speaker 1: download the app, play a $ 5 lineup, and use our code.
- 0:17Speaker 2: It's HMA.
- 0:18Speaker 1: If you win, you get $ 150 in lineups instantly. Okay,
- 0:22Speaker 1: we have a lot to talk about. It's been since
- 0:24Speaker 1: the summer, and let's start a little bit big picture.
- 0:27Speaker 1: So you guys were sitting... at number one in the country,
- 0:30Speaker 1: really gritty win against Ohio State, and now you've lost
- 0:36Speaker 1: to Oklahoma, last-second field goal.
- 0:38Speaker 2: That was a heartbreaker.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And I know anything can happen in rivalry games, so
- 0:43Speaker 1: I think when we were looking at that matchup and
- 0:45Speaker 1: we were saying Texas is so much better than Oklahoma–
- 0:48Speaker 1: I don't know that that matters as much in that
- 0:51Speaker 1: matchup as it does when you're playing somebody else who
- 0:54Speaker 1: you are better than. But when you look at this
- 0:57Speaker 1: Longhorns team right now, how different is it from the
- 1:00Speaker 1: team that everybody expected to see coming into the season?
- 1:03Speaker 2: Or do you.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Really chalk up last week truly to it being a
- 1:08Speaker 1: longstanding rivalry?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Are people concerned in Austin? Oh, yeah.
- 1:12Speaker 3: No, people are concerned.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Look, Texas is only playing well in one of three
- 1:17Speaker 4: phases right now, and that's defensive.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Football under Will Muschamp.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Special teams has been disastrous at Tennessee and then off
- 1:25Speaker 4: by week and then the pump block at Oklahoma for
- 1:28Speaker 4: their only score in the first half. And the offense
- 1:32Speaker 4: has continued to sputter. Arch really struggled in the Oklahoma.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Game when it mattered.
- 1:39Speaker 4: So there's a lot of concern amongst Texas fans.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I would say where the.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Concern lies is more offense than special teams. But, Allie,
- 1:49Speaker 4: it's 1A and 1B. There's not much distance here between
- 1:53Speaker 4: 1A and 1B. So I think there's a lot of
- 1:57Speaker 4: concern right now because I think kind of how the
- 2:02Speaker 4: Oklahoma game played out, you could kind of see coming
- 2:07Speaker 4: if you were paying attention, even in the win over
- 2:11Speaker 4: Texas State from an Arch Manning standpoint. Obviously, the three
- 2:16Speaker 4: and outs, the offensive struggles, really good defensive coordinators, but
- 2:19Speaker 4: then the special teams. You could see it coming, but
- 2:24Speaker 4: with that said, Oklahoma had not played well this year.
- 2:29Speaker 4: John Materich struggled. Defensively, Oklahoma's tremendous. Brent Venables is great.
- 2:34Speaker 4: He's a great defensive coordinator. With that being said, that
- 2:39Speaker 4: was a bad loss for Texas. Credit Oklahoma, but still
- 2:43Speaker 4: from the Texas perspective, that was a bad loss. It
- 2:47Speaker 4: was made worse by who you lost to, obviously, in
- 2:50Speaker 4: a rivalry game and the way you lost it.
- 2:53Speaker 1: So as much as I want to talk special teams,
- 2:55Speaker 1: because I do, but I want to start with Arch.
- 2:58Speaker 1: You know, he is one of the biggest names in
- 3:00Speaker 1: college football, and we have seen some inconsistency from him.
- 3:05Speaker 1: He threw three touchdowns against Oklahoma, but those two fourth
- 3:08Speaker 1: quarter interceptions were so costly. And, you know, we watched
- 3:12Speaker 1: Sartre get on the microphone this week and talk about
- 3:15Speaker 1: if his name on the back of the jersey was different,
- 3:17Speaker 1: we wouldn't be having this conversation. how would you evaluate
- 3:22Speaker 1: his season so far? Is he playing below expectations or
- 3:26Speaker 1: do you think that the most of the issues are
- 3:27Speaker 1: actually around him?
- 3:29Speaker 4: No, look, I think there's issues around him, but I
- 3:33Speaker 4: do think he hasn't progressed the way people had hoped.
- 3:38Speaker 4: And I always preface this by saying I'm a big
- 3:41Speaker 4: fan of Arch Manning. I think he does amazing things
- 3:45Speaker 4: for university and He always.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Stands up in front of the press and answers the
- 3:50Speaker 3: tough questions.
- 3:51Speaker 4: He's always there. He represents the university really, really well.
- 3:56Speaker 3: And I always start off with that. And he lives
- 3:58Speaker 3: in a fishbowl.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yeah, 100%.
- 4:01Speaker 4: But then you have to get to reality. You have
- 4:04Speaker 4: to give him credit for who he is.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Sure. Then we have to come to the reality. And
- 4:09Speaker 3: I've said this. Some of the things that showed up
- 4:13Speaker 3: in the Oklahoma game when it.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Mattered most were there earlier in the season when games
- 4:19Speaker 4: weren't in doubt. And I've been taking people back to
- 4:23Speaker 4: the Texas State game at the end of the first half.
- 4:26Speaker 3: You're up 28-7. It's an inferior opponent.
- 4:31Speaker 4: But coming out of a timeout to end the half,
- 4:34Speaker 4: you came out of a timeout, you had an incompletion
- 4:37Speaker 4: in the wing go, then it's one play kick a
- 4:40Speaker 4: field goal if you don't get into the end zone.
- 4:43Speaker 4: And it's a long-winded answer to your question, but I
- 4:45Speaker 4: think it matters, is that ball was– he threw a
- 4:49Speaker 4: ball in the triple coverage for an interception in the half.
- 4:53Speaker 4: And a ball– and a throw that you just can't
- 4:56Speaker 4: really make as a quarterback, and now you're in year two.
- 4:59Speaker 4: That was start 16 for him, 15 or 16. That
- 5:03Speaker 4: wasn't like valuing the ball, valuing the momentum, valuing the moment.
- 5:11Speaker 4: In making that split-second decision to say, I'm throwing the
- 5:16Speaker 4: ball away, we're going to take three points, that's the
- 5:20Speaker 4: correct football play, and we get the ball to start
- 5:23Speaker 4: the second half.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Not like the game was in doubt.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:25Speaker 3: But then you saw the pick six against Oklahoma. And
- 5:29Speaker 3: those decisions.
- 5:30Speaker 4: That you don't make that should be part of your
- 5:34Speaker 4: development come home and roost if they don't end up
- 5:37Speaker 4: being part of your development down the road. And there
- 5:40Speaker 4: was plays earlier this season where he took a sack,
- 5:44Speaker 4: and he's three, four yards outside the tackle box. And
- 5:47Speaker 4: was it a meaningless game against a Texas State when
- 5:50Speaker 4: you're up 35-7?
- 5:51Speaker 3: Sure. Right.
- 5:51Speaker 4: But if that ball's not thrown away there, why would
- 5:57Speaker 4: you think it's going to be thrown away under duress
- 5:59Speaker 4: when it's really chaotic in a win-or-lose type of situation?
- 6:04Speaker 4: He's had really good moments. Some of it hasn't all
- 6:06Speaker 4: been on him. Ohio State, Cam Coleman– Probably he's a
- 6:09Speaker 4: touchdown if he doesn't fall.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Ryan Wingo drops a touchdown.
- 6:13Speaker 4: So I don't want to put everything on him, but
- 6:16Speaker 4: I hear for instances this season, Allie, that if you
- 6:21Speaker 4: were really paying attention and there's some head-scratching plays, like
- 6:26Speaker 4: beyond flag for being beyond the line of scrimmage twice
- 6:29Speaker 4: in the Tennessee game.
- 6:30Speaker 3: I've never seen that happen twice.
- 6:32Speaker 4: And then it also happened to UTSA the week before.
- 6:34Speaker 4: I've never seen it happen in back-to-back games. So there
- 6:37Speaker 4: was just so many head-scratching moments that you're like, you're
- 6:40Speaker 4: kind of like, here, put your seatbelt on and let's
- 6:44Speaker 4: see what happens when this gets to talent neutralized situations,
- 6:49Speaker 4: neutral or road. And so I don't think I've seen
- 6:53Speaker 4: the progression. And I think I speak for a lot
- 6:56Speaker 4: of people that you'd hope to see.
- 6:58Speaker 3: And you still have those inconsistencies. You have too many
- 7:00Speaker 3: head-scratching plays. That's where I'm at on Arch right now.
- 7:04Speaker 1: All right, guys, we're going to take a short break
- 7:06Speaker 1: from the interview to show you how to use the
- 7:09Speaker 1: PrizePix app. Guys, this has been really fun this season
- 7:13Speaker 1: to be able to kind of get to pick some
- 7:14Speaker 1: of these things, put together a lineup and submit it.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Don't forget, download the PrizePix app. If you are a
- 7:19Speaker 1: new user, play a $ 5 lineup and use our code.
- 7:22Speaker 2: It's HMA.
- 7:22Speaker 1: If you win, you'll get $ 150 in lineups instantly. I'm
- 7:26Speaker 1: going to show you what a lineup looks like. Okay,
- 7:28Speaker 1: so let's look at what we've got for this game.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I and Jaden Baugh is sitting at 78 and.
- 7:33Speaker 2: A half rushing yards. I'm going to take the more
- 7:35Speaker 2: on that.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I think that he finally gets, gets going a little
- 7:40Speaker 1: bit this week, which maybe is fool's gold against.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Texas, but, but I'm going to, I'm going to go
- 7:44Speaker 2: for it. I'm feeling lucky.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I'm also going to take the more on Jaden Baugh
- 7:48Speaker 1: at 0.5 anytime touchdowns. I'm going to take the more
- 7:52Speaker 1: as well on Dallas Wilson, 43 and a half receiving yards.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And then let's pair that. Let's pair that with Cam Coleman.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I'm going to take the more on Cam's 0.5 anytime touchdowns.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Just kind of hard to see him not getting at
- 8:09Speaker 1: least one in there. Feels a little like free money,
- 8:12Speaker 1: but all you have to do is pair a couple
- 8:14Speaker 1: of things like this together and you've got a lineup
- 8:16Speaker 1: you can submit. We appreciate prize picks for all they
- 8:19Speaker 1: do and all their support.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Go check them out.
- 8:22Speaker 1: So Gator fans are going to relate to this because
- 8:24Speaker 1: I feel like those are some of the things we
- 8:25Speaker 1: said during the first four games that even though Florida
- 8:27Speaker 1: was winning, not with our quarterback, but just our situation
- 8:30Speaker 1: in general, is that like we've done some things that
- 8:32Speaker 1: are going to bite us later on. And we probably
- 8:33Speaker 1: could have foreseen some of the issues that they're going through,
- 8:36Speaker 1: at least defensively, had we been paying attention more the
- 8:39Speaker 1: first four. You know, you mentioned those sacks and they
- 8:43Speaker 1: did take six sacks in the Oklahoma game. Florida's offensive
- 8:47Speaker 1: line has struggled tremendously the last two weeks, and Texas
- 8:50Speaker 1: seems to be having some of its own issues. What
- 8:53Speaker 1: is happening up front for the Longhorns, and how vulnerable
- 8:59Speaker 1: is that offensive line?
- 9:01Speaker 4: Yeah, so I think this one's more twofold, if not threefold.
- 9:04Speaker 4: So I think Texas, on the offensive front itself, they
- 9:09Speaker 4: played some really good players.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Like, David Stone's really good. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Xavier Gillum at Tennessee is really good. Ohio State has
- 9:16Speaker 4: good players. So there's pieces of it where, okay, you've
- 9:19Speaker 4: lost some one-on-one matchups, right? There's pieces of it where
- 9:23Speaker 4: you're losing too many matchups, maybe at center, potentially at
- 9:27Speaker 4: right tackle right now. So there's instances where, okay, it's
- 9:33Speaker 4: been really good players you've played against, so you always
- 9:35Speaker 4: need to tip your cap to other really good players
- 9:37Speaker 4: who are going to win some matchups. Then it comes
- 9:39Speaker 4: down to, okay, from an execution standpoint, where did where
- 9:43Speaker 4: are your issues coming from on the offensive line?
- 9:46Speaker 3: And there are issues there.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Because you gave six sacks against Tennessee as well. Then
- 9:51Speaker 4: the third part of that is Arch has taken some
- 9:54Speaker 4: sacks that he shouldn't be taking. There was two against
- 9:58Speaker 4: Oklahoma where he steps up in the clean pocket and
- 10:02Speaker 4: he takes away his vision of a receiver that ends
- 10:07Speaker 4: up being open as the route develops.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Then he tries to back out. Then it's over at
- 10:12Speaker 3: that point. You stepped up into a clean pocket when
- 10:15Speaker 3: you didn't need to step up. Then there was a sack...
- 10:18Speaker 3: that was given up by.
- 10:19Speaker 4: All SEC offensive tackle Trevor Goosby technically, but it really
- 10:23Speaker 4: should have never happened. It was a three-man route to
- 10:28Speaker 4: the boundary side, and Cam Coleman was just running the
- 10:30Speaker 4: safety out of the play and the corner out of
- 10:32Speaker 4: the play. So it's a two-man progression, and one of
- 10:34Speaker 4: those was a hot route to the running back on
- 10:37Speaker 4: a little middle crosser route right in front of the backers.
- 10:40Speaker 4: That play was there, and he didn't take it, and
- 10:43Speaker 4: Arch didn't look back left. There was nobody on the
- 10:46Speaker 4: left side of the field. This was a right side,
- 10:49Speaker 4: boundary side, two progression read.
- 10:52Speaker 3: And he hesitates.
- 10:53Speaker 4: He pumps the ball, pumps the ball, looks left. There's
- 10:55Speaker 4: nowhere to go left, so he takes a sack. So
- 10:58Speaker 4: there's been instances.
- 10:59Speaker 3: I think it's a long-winded answer, but sometimes they have
- 11:01Speaker 3: to be, Allie. It's multiple reasons for that.
- 11:04Speaker 4: But I do always want to give who you play
- 11:07Speaker 4: some of those players credit to.
- 11:09Speaker 3: They deserve it.
- 11:10Speaker 4: There's good players in the SEC, and these guys are
- 11:13Speaker 4: NFL draft picks, but I think Texas, here's where I
- 11:16Speaker 4: think Texas has been vulnerable, is disguised blitzes with linebackers.
- 11:22Speaker 4: That's been something that UTSA deployed, and I think you've
- 11:27Speaker 4: seen Tennessee kind of incorporate that, and Brent Venables is
- 11:30Speaker 4: really good at a lot of ghost pressures and some
- 11:35Speaker 4: late movement pressures, and I think a lot of the
- 11:38Speaker 4: pressures have been created in the last, changing alignments inside
- 11:42Speaker 4: 10 seconds on the play clock or before the ball snapped.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit more about the talent Texas
- 11:51Speaker 1: has offensively. I mean, it should be one of the
- 11:55Speaker 1: best offenses in the SEC if you're looking at talent composition.
- 11:59Speaker 1: And Sark has always been regarded as one of the
- 12:02Speaker 1: best offensive minds in college football. The offense hasn't looked
- 12:06Speaker 1: consistently explosive, and it's for all the reasons that we
- 12:08Speaker 1: just talked about. But how much of that falls on
- 12:12Speaker 1: Sark and his play calling versus just simply not executing
- 12:17Speaker 1: by the personnel?
- 12:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's a little bit of all of it,
- 12:22Speaker 4: but obviously everything eventually falls to the feet of.
- 12:25Speaker 3: The head coach.
- 12:26Speaker 4: I mean, so the reality, he's the head coach of
- 12:29Speaker 4: the University of Texas, and he's had really good success
- 12:31Speaker 4: at Texas. I mean, two straight playoffs, semifinals, last year
- 12:35Speaker 4: even a 10-win season, even though the season didn't, go
- 12:39Speaker 4: as you'd hoped or planned so I think there's a
- 12:42Speaker 4: it goes around to a few things here.
- 12:46Speaker 3: One of my things in.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Terms of play calling is commitment to run and commitment
- 12:51Speaker 4: to physical run game I think there's commitment to physical
- 12:55Speaker 4: run game I think there's a willingness to say okay
- 12:58Speaker 4: it's two and three yard gains there you may get
- 13:01Speaker 4: stoned on a couple of them you may have an
- 13:04Speaker 4: explosive run I think there's always going to be that
- 13:07Speaker 4: question because a stat popped up, Allie, during the Notre
- 13:11Speaker 4: Dame-North Carolina game. I was just flipping through the channels.
- 13:15Speaker 4: The last 22 national champions, 22 years in a row,
- 13:19Speaker 4: have averaged 160 rushing yards or more per game.
- 13:22Speaker 3: That's not a two- or three-year trend.
- 13:24Speaker 2: We're talking 22 national champions.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Texas won 40s.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Interesting. Yards per rush, rushing yards per game have gone
- 13:34Speaker 4: down consistently the last four years. So there's a physicality
- 13:39Speaker 4: problem weaved in there, I think, in the run game
- 13:42Speaker 4: and wide receivers. Like Cam Coleman is not playing physical football,
- 13:45Speaker 4: not blocking on the edge, not playing through contact.
- 13:48Speaker 3: There's been some of that, so it's not just on
- 13:50Speaker 3: one position.
- 13:51Speaker 4: So I think it's a little bit of everything, but
- 13:54Speaker 4: I think in the run games, I think there's some.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Issues that have to be addressed because if you can't
- 14:03Speaker 3: run the football well enough in.
- 14:04Speaker 4: This league or consistent enough in this league, and I
- 14:08Speaker 4: think with physicality to start, I'm not sure you ever
- 14:11Speaker 4: get to the end line of where you want to go. Yeah.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Florida's defense has been a major disappointment the last two weeks.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Surely it hasn't been good all six weeks, but it
- 14:22Speaker 1: really was on full display the last couple of weeks.
- 14:25Speaker 2: The Gators have struggled.
- 14:26Speaker 1: With tackling and explosive plays and getting off the field
- 14:30Speaker 1: on third down, I think, more than anything. If you
- 14:33Speaker 1: are Sark and you're watching that Missouri and that South
- 14:36Speaker 1: Carolina film, what are you looking to exploit? And is
- 14:39Speaker 1: this a matchup potentially that Texas maybe needs to get
- 14:43Speaker 1: its offense going?
- 14:44Speaker 4: Well, I do think this, and look, it'll probably come
- 14:47Speaker 4: back and bite me for saying this on air, but Florida,
- 14:51Speaker 4: I think, is what, 109 in the country in total defense. Mm-hmm.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Ole Miss is, I think, 108. Mississippi State's around 195, 96,
- 14:58Speaker 4: in those ranges.
- 14:59Speaker 3: I could be off by two or three. But Florida
- 15:03Speaker 3: has struggled defending the pass. Obviously, we all know that.
- 15:06Speaker 4: I think they give up 290 yards passing a game.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Byron Brown, Lenora Sellers, some guys have had– Austin Simmons
- 15:11Speaker 4: have had their best games passing the football against Florida
- 15:14Speaker 4: this year.
- 15:15Speaker 3: So what do you have to do?
- 15:17Speaker 4: It kind of goes back to one of your questions earlier.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Pass protection is– key for Texas in this game you
- 15:22Speaker 4: have to be able to establish a run but Jaden
- 15:24Speaker 4: Woods I can't remember the big the big kid off
- 15:27Speaker 4: the edge 99 yeah there's two I think Jaden Woods
- 15:32Speaker 4: is gonna be a first round pick one day they
- 15:33Speaker 4: have two solid edge guys but can they create pressure
- 15:38Speaker 4: consistently with their front four I think for Florida is
- 15:40Speaker 4: kind of my question and if Texas can pass pro
- 15:45Speaker 4: and obviously your.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Goal is not to be in third and ten but
- 15:48Speaker 3: if you can pass pro and you can hold up
- 15:50Speaker 3: and pass pro.
- 15:51Speaker 4: If you can force Florida to bring the extra hat
- 15:55Speaker 4: or two to get pressure, a six-man pressure, if you
- 15:58Speaker 4: can force that, then I think you can win down
- 16:01Speaker 4: the field and win some battles where I think you've
- 16:04Speaker 4: seen there's enough tape right now to say, okay, here's
- 16:07Speaker 4: some places you can attack, but you've got to get
- 16:10Speaker 4: it to where Florida doesn't win with four, so you've
- 16:13Speaker 4: got to pass pro well enough five on four. Then
- 16:16Speaker 4: you've got to get them to bring the numbers. I
- 16:18Speaker 4: think if you can get Florida to bring the numbers,
- 16:19Speaker 4: you're going to have some really good opportunities for success.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Then it comes down to Arch seeing it, get the
- 16:25Speaker 4: ball out of his hand with the correct timing.
- 16:28Speaker 3: So that's what I say.
- 16:28Speaker 4: But it almost always starts with the run, too. I mean,
- 16:31Speaker 4: you've got to force the.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Extra hat in the box.
- 16:33Speaker 4: And you can't play against a light. If you can't
- 16:37Speaker 4: run against a light box, then you've got issues. But
- 16:41Speaker 4: that's the big one for me is you've got to
- 16:43Speaker 4: get Florida to bring a six-man pressure. And if you
- 16:46Speaker 4: can get Florida to bring six-man pressures, I think Texas
- 16:49Speaker 4: will find some opportunities in the passing game because I
- 16:51Speaker 4: think that's kind of been proven out.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Let's flip and talk about the other side of the ball.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Texas has been really impressive defensively. They allow about 265
- 17:00Speaker 1: yards per game. What makes this defense so effective, and
- 17:04Speaker 1: who are the two or three players Florida fans really
- 17:07Speaker 1: need to know their name heading into Saturday?
- 17:10Speaker 3: Yeah, obviously number one is Colin Simmons.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Florida fans may know it for the right reasons or
- 17:15Speaker 4: the wrong reasons after Tennessee.
- 17:16Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 17:17Speaker 4: But he's the best pass rusher in the country. I mean, look,
- 17:20Speaker 4: I think Prince Will, Eumann Emelian is really good.
- 17:22Speaker 3: At LSU too. Florida just played some good edges. Dylan
- 17:27Speaker 3: Stewart's a really good player.
- 17:27Speaker 4: But Colin Simmons and Dylan Stewart are different players. Colin
- 17:30Speaker 4: Simmons is an elite, elite, elite pass rusher. And I
- 17:33Speaker 4: think Coach Summerall kind.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Of mentioned that in his press conference.
- 17:36Speaker 4: I think Raheem Biles, number three, the linebacker is the
- 17:39Speaker 4: other one. I think Raheem Biles is a tremendous three-level
- 17:43Speaker 4: football player.
- 17:44Speaker 3: He's a guy who can create turnovers. He can create TFLs.
- 17:48Speaker 4: He is very fast. You can use him as a
- 17:50Speaker 4: spy if you need to. Texas has deployed him in
- 17:54Speaker 4: that situation multiple times this year. But those two guys
- 17:57Speaker 4: are kind of the disruptive forces on the Texas defense.
- 18:03Speaker 4: But I think in this game– I will say this,
- 18:05Speaker 4: I think in this game because– The wide zone stretch
- 18:08Speaker 4: play is so important for Florida's offense, and Jaden Baugh
- 18:12Speaker 4: is a tremendous running back, a tremendous running back. I
- 18:15Speaker 4: think Lance Jackson for Texas and Edge is number 40.
- 18:19Speaker 4: He's really taken a step this year under Will Muschamp.
- 18:21Speaker 4: I think Hiro Kanu, Maraud Watson, the other two, three
- 18:26Speaker 4: techniques that play a five. I think all those guys
- 18:29Speaker 4: are important, but the two, I think, most talented players
- 18:32Speaker 4: on this defense are Colin Simmons and Raheem Biles.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Jaden Baugh and Florida's running game have struggled the last
- 18:41Speaker 1: couple of games, even though they were so good, maybe
- 18:44Speaker 1: the best in the country during the first four. Jaden
- 18:47Speaker 1: has found or has struggled to find room to run, though,
- 18:50Speaker 1: against Missouri and South Carolina.
- 18:52Speaker 2: They completely shut it down.
- 18:53Speaker 1: When you look at this Texas defensive front, is there
- 18:56Speaker 1: any reason to believe Florida can get that ground game
- 18:59Speaker 1: going again? Or is this really just, you think, an
- 19:01Speaker 1: absolutely another difficult matchup for them?
- 19:04Speaker 4: And I'm not trying to get Florida fans on my
- 19:08Speaker 4: side here, but I'm always real, Allie. Vernell Brown's a
- 19:11Speaker 4: big loss for the offense. And Eric Singleton not being
- 19:15Speaker 4: healthy all year. Because all the pre-step movement, the misdirection,
- 19:23Speaker 4: Vernell Brown's an explosive player.
- 19:25Speaker 3: There aren't many.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Guys on his level in college football. And Jaden Ball's
- 19:31Speaker 4: a tremendous player, but all this has to kind of
- 19:33Speaker 4: fit together. I mean, is your eye candy the same
- 19:37Speaker 4: if you don't really have to worry about the guy
- 19:39Speaker 4: that– and I'm not saying Bailey Stockton's not a good player, but.
- 19:42Speaker 2: It's not the same, though.
- 19:43Speaker 3: It's not the same.
- 19:44Speaker 2: It's not the same.
- 19:45Speaker 3: That's like if Xavier Worthy would have been hurt at
- 19:47Speaker 3: Texas back in the day when he was there. It's
- 19:49Speaker 3: not the same.
- 19:50Speaker 4: So you can put the extra hat in the box
- 19:51Speaker 4: against the run game, and then, look, it becomes a
- 19:54Speaker 4: numbers game at some point. And I think what made
- 19:56Speaker 4: Florida really tough, and it's early before people have to
- 19:59Speaker 4: scout too, right?
- 20:00Speaker 3: The more you get into the season, the more teams
- 20:02Speaker 3: can scout and find tendencies. Sure.
- 20:05Speaker 4: You are really difficult to stop.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Even if Singleton's a.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Decoy and he's running deep, okay, with Vernell Brown and
- 20:13Speaker 4: Jaden Ball on the field. So you took away one
- 20:16Speaker 4: of your two best weapons.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Well, okay, fine.
- 20:19Speaker 4: If I'm a DC, I'm going to add the extra
- 20:20Speaker 4: hat to the box, and I'm going to take away
- 20:22Speaker 4: your wide zone stretch play, and then what's your counter?
- 20:25Speaker 4: Because I'm not worried about your misdirection as much anymore.
- 20:29Speaker 4: So I think the health of Vernell Brown– I don't
- 20:32Speaker 4: know where Eric Singleton's.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Going to be at.
- 20:34Speaker 4: I think if I'm a Florida fan, that is ultra
- 20:37Speaker 4: important for me to see Saturday. What is, not that
- 20:40Speaker 4: Vern L. Brown's going to play, but what does he
- 20:43Speaker 4: look like on the field? Does Will Muschamp have to
- 20:46Speaker 4: be concerned or he has to play with a lighter
- 20:48Speaker 4: box a higher percentage of the time than Missouri had to,
- 20:52Speaker 4: probably than South Carolina did?
- 20:54Speaker 2: I'll be interested to see.
- 20:55Speaker 1: As we're recording this, we don't have the Wednesday injury
- 20:59Speaker 1: report yet. By the time it runs, it'll probably be
- 21:01Speaker 1: out there, but I am interested to see where they
- 21:03Speaker 1: put Brown on that. When he very first got hurt,
- 21:06Speaker 1: I was told by somebody inside the locker room that
- 21:09Speaker 1: it was a two- to four-week PCL strain. You know,
- 21:13Speaker 1: one week is you miss Missouri. Week two is you've
- 21:15Speaker 1: missed South Carolina. So you are still very much in
- 21:19Speaker 1: that range where you may not be back.
- 21:21Speaker 2: You may be back. We did hear he practiced today.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Buster Faulkner did tell us that Eric Singleton is 100%
- 21:28Speaker 1: for the first time since his injury, which he was
- 21:30Speaker 1: injured in the– first series of the first game. So
- 21:34Speaker 1: we have yet to see VB3, Eric Singleton, and Dallas
- 21:38Speaker 1: Wilson on the field at the same time together.
- 21:40Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 21:41Speaker 4: That really changes the offense, by the way. I mean,
- 21:43Speaker 4: you become with Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown and just
- 21:48Speaker 4: the threat of Singleton hitting a go on you, right?
- 21:52Speaker 4: That Florida offense is much different if you have all
- 21:56Speaker 4: four of your weapons because then a defensive coordinator is
- 21:59Speaker 4: has to make box decisions.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Sure.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Well, and we will find out.
- 22:03Speaker 1: So TBD on the Vernell piece of that, it does
- 22:06Speaker 1: appear that Eric Singleton should be ready to go, which
- 22:09Speaker 1: is good. However, we did learn today that Aaron Filo
- 22:12Speaker 1: is dealing with a shoulder injury, and I can tell
- 22:14Speaker 1: you exactly what play he went down on against South Carolina.
- 22:18Speaker 1: You could tell when he got up that he was hurting.
- 22:21Speaker 1: So we don't know for sure, but there is a
- 22:23Speaker 1: real possibility of Tramell Jones Jr. making his first career
- 22:28Speaker 1: start in Austin. From the Texas perspective, how much does
- 22:34Speaker 1: that change how they prepare? And if you are the Longhorns,
- 22:37Speaker 1: how aggressively do you attack a young quarterback who is
- 22:41Speaker 1: making his first start in that environment?
- 22:44Speaker 3: I will say this.
- 22:44Speaker 4: I'm not sure it changes your game plan because I
- 22:47Speaker 4: think the game plan.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Is that limit slow Jaden Ball. You can't do that.
- 22:52Speaker 4: I'm not sure how much the rest of this matters.
- 22:54Speaker 4: If Voss got 28 carries for 170 in Austin.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Or something, that's not good.
- 22:59Speaker 4: So I think obviously they're looking back at tape. I
- 23:02Speaker 4: don't know if there's anybody in the Texas staff that
- 23:03Speaker 4: was part of recruiting him out of high school that
- 23:06Speaker 4: kind of knows, has a feel for what his athleticism, Trammell's,
- 23:11Speaker 4: is actually like, right? I mean, going beyond if he's
- 23:14Speaker 4: the starter and there's going to be some nerves that
- 23:16Speaker 4: come with that. I saw him in high school because
- 23:19Speaker 4: Texas recruited Jamie French out of Mandarin. Oh, yeah. Trammell
- 23:22Speaker 4: is a super smart player, very intelligent kid. So I'm
- 23:27Speaker 4: not sure there's a big fall-off from Philo. That's no
- 23:30Speaker 4: disrespect to Philo, but I'm not sure there's a big
- 23:34Speaker 4: fall-off there. I think Philo probably won the job because
- 23:37Speaker 4: he was very familiar with the system and came with
- 23:39Speaker 4: Buckner Faulkner. But I think Trammell Jones is a pretty
- 23:42Speaker 4: good player from what I saw. Now the question is,
- 23:45Speaker 4: with a young quarterback, It's always the same. If we
- 23:48Speaker 4: light you up and we start bringing the heat and
- 23:51Speaker 4: we can make it very chaotic in here.
- 23:53Speaker 3: How do you respond? Yeah. And I do think the
- 23:55Speaker 3: way to run first for that to happen and matter.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I mean, I'm the hope, obviously, is that BB three
- 24:01Speaker 1: is there and that can help lessen this transition maybe
- 24:04Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 24:05Speaker 2: And I do.
- 24:05Speaker 1: I think you're right there. Florida fans have long believed
- 24:08Speaker 1: there wasn't a huge talent gap between them. And honestly,
- 24:11Speaker 1: I looked back and I think Florida has made it
- 24:13Speaker 1: through an entire season with the same quarterback like three
- 24:16Speaker 1: times in the last 20 years.
- 24:19Speaker 2: It doesn't happen very often, particularly for Florida.
- 24:21Speaker 1: So I think there was kind of a lot of
- 24:23Speaker 1: confidence we would more than likely see both at some
- 24:26Speaker 1: point throughout this season, just if history is any indicator there.
- 24:30Speaker 1: And I do, I think it's the familiarity with Faulkner
- 24:33Speaker 1: and with the playbook that was really a deciding factor.
- 24:35Speaker 1: But I think they are at least decently similar in
- 24:38Speaker 1: terms of skill set. Florida went into Austin in 2024.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Things got ugly really quickly. We were on a third
- 24:45Speaker 1: string quarterback.
- 24:46Speaker 3: You could be three or four from what I remember. Yeah,
- 24:48Speaker 3: it was a bad team.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it just never, I was sitting in
- 24:50Speaker 1: that stands and it just, I felt like I never
- 24:52Speaker 1: really got to even enjoy the stadium because it was
- 24:54Speaker 1: more like, man, we're sorry you guys still have to
- 24:57Speaker 1: do this kind of attitude as opposed to, you know,
- 25:00Speaker 1: really feeling the juice there. And so this is now
- 25:03Speaker 1: the second time potentially that Florida's going there without their
- 25:07Speaker 1: starting quarterback. How difficult is it to play in DKR
- 25:11Speaker 1: and what should Florida expect from that crowd? I think
- 25:13Speaker 1: we don't have a great taste of what it was
- 25:15Speaker 1: like because literally last year it was, or two years ago,
- 25:18Speaker 1: dead man walking. There was no, you know, There wasn't
- 25:22Speaker 1: a lot of hype around the game because I think
- 25:23Speaker 1: the result was kind of a foregone conclusion. You guys
- 25:27Speaker 1: are coming off a rivalry loss. And potentially there's some
- 25:32Speaker 1: hope for revenge from last year. You know, Texas didn't
- 25:35Speaker 1: make it to the playoffs. One of those two losses
- 25:37Speaker 1: was to the Gators. Tell me what we can expect.
- 25:41Speaker 4: Well, the first thing I want to see in this
- 25:43Speaker 4: game is where both of these teams are at. This
- 25:45Speaker 4: should be a super physical football game. Florida's lost two
- 25:50Speaker 4: games in a row and it hasn't been pretty. Texas
- 25:52Speaker 4: lost to their rival, and some would say we gave
- 25:56Speaker 4: them the game. I mean, you know, a pump block,
- 25:58Speaker 4: and it picked six. I mean, Oklahoma didn't really move
- 26:03Speaker 4: the football. They had 238 yards and were 2 of
- 26:05Speaker 4: 13 on third down. They made a couple of plays
- 26:07Speaker 4: when they had to. But other than that, I mean, Oklahoma,
- 26:11Speaker 4: I'm not saying they necessarily earned that game.
- 26:13Speaker 3: On offense, but they won the game. And not to
- 26:15Speaker 3: take credit away. So I'm very interested to see.
- 26:18Speaker 4: This should be a physical desperation on both side game.
- 26:22Speaker 3: I'm real. It's a must-win game for Texas. Yeah. If
- 26:26Speaker 3: you take two.
- 26:26Speaker 4: Losses in a row, when you still have Trinidad Chambliss
- 26:30Speaker 4: at Missouri and at LSU left on the schedule, you
- 26:33Speaker 4: think you're going to the playoff?
- 26:35Speaker 3: I would say no, no, no, no.
- 26:37Speaker 4: And for Florida, I think getting off to the start
- 26:41Speaker 4: Florida did in year one or summer all got people
- 26:43Speaker 4: really excited as they should be. But going into the season,
- 26:48Speaker 4: if I'd thrown eight and four at Florida fans.
- 26:50Speaker 3: They'd have said, we'll take it. Yeah. We'll take it.
- 26:53Speaker 4: And so now you're going to see what type of– and,
- 26:55Speaker 4: you know, I think Summerall's really good. I'm a fan
- 26:57Speaker 4: of Summerall because I think he's real and genuine. We're
- 27:00Speaker 4: going to see the fight that Florida brings to Austin
- 27:04Speaker 4: and the fight that Texas brings to Florida. That should
- 27:06Speaker 4: make for a really physical game. As far as for
- 27:09Speaker 4: the Florida team, I think what's going to be so
- 27:11Speaker 4: interesting about this game If Texas gets off to a
- 27:16Speaker 4: poor start offensively, Florida.
- 27:19Speaker 3: Fans are going to hear some boo-birds. Yeah.
- 27:21Speaker 4: And that might make it easier for Florida.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:26Speaker 3: It's going to be very interesting, that crowd Saturday at 11.
- 27:30Speaker 2: It is very interesting to me.
- 27:31Speaker 1: And I don't, you know, this is a game that
- 27:33Speaker 1: I predicted Florida would lose starting back in June. And
- 27:36Speaker 1: I don't think it's a must win for the Gators,
- 27:38Speaker 1: but I think if they could figure out pulling it off,
- 27:41Speaker 1: it would really change things around. And the last two
- 27:45Speaker 1: weeks have been hard for Gator fans. I think more
- 27:47Speaker 1: so the way the losses happened than that they happened.
- 27:51Speaker 1: You know, we've talked extensively about the problems that Florida
- 27:55Speaker 1: has had the last couple of weeks. But when you
- 27:57Speaker 1: look at this matchup, Is there anything that does concern
- 28:01Speaker 1: you about the Gators?
- 28:02Speaker 2: You had talked about special teams.
- 28:04Speaker 1: I do think Florida has some of the best special
- 28:06Speaker 1: teams in the country, which you haven't been able to
- 28:07Speaker 1: say the last four years. What are some matchups you
- 28:10Speaker 1: think could give Texas trouble?
- 28:12Speaker 4: Jaden Woods off the edge. Look, I think that guy
- 28:16Speaker 4: has first-round ability. If he goes out and has a
- 28:18Speaker 4: two- or three-sat game, Texas is going to be behind
- 28:21Speaker 4: the chains. If Florida can create enough pressure up front
- 28:25Speaker 4: and win on first down defensively, That's huge against Texas
- 28:29Speaker 4: because Texas is– and all teams struggle in third and longs,
- 28:33Speaker 4: but I think this one's been pretty rough for Texas
- 28:36Speaker 4: this year. And part of that is how can you
- 28:39Speaker 4: confuse Arch on third down. So the Jaden Woods matchup,
- 28:44Speaker 4: if that's against Trevor Goosby, that's a key matchup. Trevor
- 28:47Speaker 4: Goosby and all SEC pick preseason. And I think, look,
- 28:51Speaker 4: another big one is a Texas defensive front versus a
- 28:53Speaker 4: Florida offensive line as a whole because the blueprint's Missouri.
- 28:58Speaker 4: I mean, you've got to take away the wide zone.
- 29:00Speaker 4: You take away the stretch. If you can take away
- 29:03Speaker 4: somebody's bread and butter in their run game, especially if
- 29:07Speaker 4: it's a first-time starting quarterback, you make life much more
- 29:10Speaker 4: difficult on that team.
- 29:12Speaker 3: I think the.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Vernell Brown-Grayson-Littleton matchup was a fun matchup for football fans
- 29:19Speaker 4: because that's one of the best nickels in the country,
- 29:22Speaker 4: and that's one of the most explosive players in the country.
- 29:25Speaker 3: That's one for me.
- 29:26Speaker 4: Texas fans don't want to see Dallas Wilson running down
- 29:29Speaker 4: the field after last year. I can tell you that
- 29:31Speaker 4: when he had the spitball touchdown. That one's PTSD type
- 29:35Speaker 4: of stuff.
- 29:36Speaker 3: I think, for some Texas fans.
- 29:38Speaker 4: So Florida's wide receivers. I'm not sure Bo Masco is
- 29:42Speaker 4: going to be 100% going into this game. So if
- 29:45Speaker 4: Florida tends to think that, they may try to attack
- 29:48Speaker 4: Bo Masco. And it'll be interesting to see how Florida
- 29:52Speaker 4: attacks him. But really, I really look at Florida's offensive
- 29:57Speaker 4: line versus Texas' defensive front and Florida's run game. I
- 30:01Speaker 4: think that's big. In the SEC, it's take away the run.
- 30:04Speaker 4: And then I think for Florida, it's getting after Arch
- 30:09Speaker 4: Manning and Texas and pass pro to help protect your secondary.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Which is vulnerable.
- 30:14Speaker 2: All right, so let me know, how do you see
- 30:16Speaker 2: this one playing out? Do you have a prediction for us?
- 30:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I do, and who knows if it's right at
- 30:21Speaker 3: this point. I can't predict anything in the SEC. That's true.
- 30:24Speaker 4: Other than Georgia Kirby's pregame speech, you can predict that.
- 30:27Speaker 3: But, I mean, it's really good.
- 30:30Speaker 4: I'm going to go Texas 30, Florida 21. I think
- 30:36Speaker 4: it's going to be in that area code. Maybe Florida 23.
- 30:39Speaker 3: I think it's going to be in that area code. And, look,
- 30:43Speaker 3: I'm going to go on this.
- 30:44Speaker 4: And a lot of Texas fans say Jerry's nuts for
- 30:46Speaker 4: predicting 30 points. But I just– I think Florida's secondary
- 30:52Speaker 4: this year is an opportunity for Texas that really was
- 30:58Speaker 4: tougher to come by against Ohio State, Tennessee, and Oklahoma.
- 31:04Speaker 3: That's where I come out on this game.
- 31:05Speaker 4: I don't think Texas is going to shut down Florida's offense,
- 31:08Speaker 4: by the way, especially if those guys are healthy at
- 31:11Speaker 4: wide receiver.
- 31:12Speaker 3: I don't think they're going to shut them down.
- 31:13Speaker 4: I think Will's really good, and I think Texas' defense
- 31:15Speaker 4: is really good, but I have respect for Florida's skill guys.
- 31:19Speaker 3: All right.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Well, Jerry, tell everybody where they can follow along this week.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Check out your work and, you know, hear what you
- 31:25Speaker 1: have to say.
- 31:26Speaker 4: On Texas football. That's on Texas football YouTube. We have
- 31:29Speaker 4: coffee and football Monday through Friday. I think Allie may
- 31:32Speaker 4: join us this week on that.
- 31:34Speaker 3: And we have shows throughout the day. We have a
- 31:36Speaker 3: live stream at night.
- 31:37Speaker 4: If you want to come in and talk Florida, Texas
- 31:40Speaker 4: with us, if you ever, recruiting question if you want.
- 31:42Speaker 3: To talk smack about eastern royal you can do that too.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Oh yeah we didn't even mention that.
- 31:48Speaker 4: We have time for everything here good for me um
- 31:51Speaker 4: and we're on texasfootball.com our message boards as well come
- 31:54Speaker 4: tell me why i'm an idiot everybody else.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Does i love it well i appreciate it thanks for
- 31:59Speaker 1: hanging out with me and i will see you friday
- 32:01Speaker 1: morning see you
- 32:02Speaker 3: Friday alley thank you
