- 0:40Speaker 1: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:10Speaker 1: provide more cooling in the containment chambers.
- 1:13Speaker 4: To your.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Stations, we have a movie meltdown.
- 1:23Speaker 5: It's the Wild Rumpus Star!
- 1:27Speaker 2: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian, and
- 1:29Speaker 2: joining me once again from the magic of the internet is.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Sam.
- 1:34Speaker 4: I am.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Yeah, well, You are sort of like a children's book.
- 1:41Speaker 1: There we go.
- 1:42Speaker 2: A weird, crazy children's book. Oh, dude. Otherwise.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Go ahead. Keep going.
- 1:51Speaker 2: What's your sidetrack story?
- 1:54Speaker 1: Oh, dude. Green eggs and ham, man. I have had
- 1:57Speaker 1: so many arguments about green eggs and ham lately. I
- 2:00Speaker 1: can't even get started, dude.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I like that it's lately.
- 2:03Speaker 1: No, lately. Lately. This is not something I had in
- 2:06Speaker 1: first or second grade.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Dude.
- 2:08Speaker 1: It has been a journey lately, Brian. And I can
- 2:13Speaker 1: let you finish your intro, but I do have a
- 2:15Speaker 1: Green Eggs and Ham story.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I mean, we have no real intro when you're on.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 2:21Speaker 2: At least let's get my name out in yours. And
- 2:24Speaker 2: after that, it's a free-for-all. You know how these episodes go.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 2:29Speaker 2: So, ladies and gentlemen, Green Eggs and Ham.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Okay, Green Eggs and Ham. Here we go.
- 2:34Speaker 2: So.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Green Eggs and Ham. I recently got into a big
- 2:37Speaker 1: argument with somebody about Green Eggs and Ham because I've
- 2:43Speaker 1: always loved the story Green Eggs and Ham. When I
- 2:47Speaker 1: read it to the kids, I would get a little
- 2:49Speaker 1: choked up at the end when the old man says,
- 2:57Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you, Sam I Am. I always just
- 3:01Speaker 1: thought that was just this great moment, you know, of like, Look,
- 3:05Speaker 1: I can't get stuck in familiar patterns. I need to
- 3:09Speaker 1: learn to expand my horizon, okay?
- 3:13Speaker 2: You're really connecting with the story now.
- 3:17Speaker 6: I think I'm reading into this as you also do.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Brian, who knows the backstory here and everything.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I know your life.
- 3:30Speaker 7: Right, right, right.
- 3:32Speaker 2: The ways you have come to us.
- 3:33Speaker 1: That's right, that's right. So yeah, everything's become a metaphor.
- 3:38Speaker 1: All right. But, uh, so I've always enjoyed that part
- 3:41Speaker 1: of the story and everything. And then, um, and then
- 3:45Speaker 1: I was reading it recently or I was discussing it with, uh, uh,
- 3:49Speaker 1: my niece who is, uh, 25 and she started, she's.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Really into literature at this point. Sure.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:58Speaker 1: So we were just talking about how a persistent, uh, suggestion, uh,
- 4:07Speaker 1: can wear a person down and how you just hear
- 4:11Speaker 1: something over and over and over and how basically cults
- 4:16Speaker 1: and mind control work and and how you take uh
- 4:22Speaker 1: something that somebody doesn't like oh brian you're going to
- 4:25Speaker 1: read somebody into so much into this you take something
- 4:28Speaker 1: you take something that somebody doesn't like or want or
- 4:32Speaker 1: in need in their life all right and then you
- 4:34Speaker 1: just keep punching away at it. How about with a fox?
- 4:40Speaker 1: How about in a box? I'm like, still no. How
- 4:43Speaker 1: about here? How about there? And then the story starts
- 4:49Speaker 1: becoming about the system or a influence or a force
- 4:58Speaker 1: or a religion or anything.
- 5:01Speaker 7: The system in place of Methodically decontextualizing somebody's feelings until
- 5:10Speaker 7: they're so worn out that in the end of Green
- 5:16Speaker 7: Eggs and Ham, it's they.
- 5:21Speaker 1: They give in to the system.
- 5:23Speaker 2: They've worn him down.
- 5:25Speaker 1: They've just beat him.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Through the entire book to the point he's just like,
- 5:30Speaker 2: you know what? I don't even care anymore.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I don't care anymore.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I don't know what the hell we were even going
- 5:37Speaker 2: on about when we started this nonsense. That's right. And
- 5:40Speaker 2: at this point, I just want it to end.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I might not even be talking about this. argument here.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I just wanted to end. What do I do to
- 5:50Speaker 1: make this stop? Exactly. To make Sam stop.
- 5:56Speaker 2: All right?
- 5:57Speaker 1: Shut up, Sam. Is this Uncle Sam? I don't know. But.
- 6:05Speaker 1: But Sam... Sam wears this guy down. And where I
- 6:12Speaker 1: used to read the story as.
- 6:16Speaker 1: As a thank you. Thank you, Sam I am. Now
- 6:21Speaker 1: when I read the story, I see his dead, lifeless
- 6:25Speaker 1: eyes slowly picking up the fork, cutting into it, taking
- 6:30Speaker 1: a piece, eating it. Then he goes like, I like them.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I like them, Sam. I like them, Sam I am.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you, Sam I am.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Broken. beaten yeah yeah forever broken this is the end
- 6:53Speaker 2: for me i finally tried it and it's i'm done.
- 6:58Speaker 1: It's just like the ending of the book or the
- 7:01Speaker 1: movie uh uh 1984 uh you know i always reference
- 7:05Speaker 1: books that i never read but this one i've read
- 7:08Speaker 1: but the the great thing at the end of 1984
- 7:11Speaker 1: he is part of the system And he sold out
- 7:18Speaker 1: his love and everything to become part of the system.
- 7:22Speaker 1: And that's just what green eggs and ham is, man.
- 7:27Speaker 1: the methodical and my niece was like yeah it's also
- 7:30Speaker 1: about consent it's kind of like a guy trying to
- 7:33Speaker 1: go after a gal and he goes like no I
- 7:37Speaker 1: think you're my friend and he goes like well what
- 7:38Speaker 1: if I was rich or what if I was cool
- 7:41Speaker 1: or what about this or what if like your sister
- 7:44Speaker 1: was in town or.
- 7:46Speaker 6: Whatever you know laughing you sure you don't want to
- 7:49Speaker 6: go out with me you sure you don't want to
- 7:50Speaker 6: go out with me yeah right and eventually this girl's
- 7:53Speaker 6: like oh my god if you will just stop and
- 7:55Speaker 6: then they end up getting.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Married and like for the rest of her life she's
- 7:58Speaker 2: just like oh he just he wore me down before
- 8:05Speaker 2: they're like yeah i didn't really even like him but
- 8:08Speaker 2: like he just he was just there and it just
- 8:11Speaker 2: wore down eventually and Then it was just, I don't know,
- 8:15Speaker 2: I guess, what do we get married now? People give
- 8:18Speaker 2: me this as their life. And I'm like, wow, my
- 8:20Speaker 2: life's sad, but shit, that's terrible.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Dude, for real.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I don't know that one's better than the other, but
- 8:30Speaker 2: that's pretty sad, man. Just saying.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Yeah, right. Trapped in a prison of politeness. You know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: it was like, well, I didn't want to be rude,
- 8:39Speaker 1: so I married him.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Um again especially the cards are back you go in
- 8:45Speaker 2: generations yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Well then oh tim asked me to marry him i'll
- 8:53Speaker 1: guess i'll pick out a wedding dress do you like
- 8:56Speaker 1: tim what does that have to do with anything i've
- 8:59Speaker 1: been sure i mean i'm.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Special i don't have any better options so i guess
- 9:04Speaker 2: i don't want to Be that old man of 23
- 9:08Speaker 2: and I better just marry this dude because he's, you know, here.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. That caused a big argument.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Magical. Yeah.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I told that story recently and it. cause ripples of like,
- 9:26Speaker 1: what's wrong with you? Why do you take everything good
- 9:29Speaker 1: and wonderful and destroy it?
- 9:33Speaker 2: You're like, that's what I do. That's what I do. Well, again,
- 9:39Speaker 2: if we want to kick it off with literature, which
- 9:42Speaker 2: does not happen much on this show.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Ah, yes. Welcome to LiteratureCast.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Well, again, if we're taking kids' books... And then being like, no,
- 9:52Speaker 2: there's kind of a real listen here, pay attention. Because
- 9:57Speaker 2: I used to, I used to I'll say well I'll
- 10:02Speaker 2: know this person I won't name them by name but
- 10:04Speaker 2: they're not listening they don't care but anyway she's a
- 10:06Speaker 2: mom and she had multiple children And, you know, they
- 10:10Speaker 2: weren't quite often. I'm like, this wasn't a gunpoint. I mean,
- 10:13Speaker 2: you had these children. You're responsible for the things that
- 10:17Speaker 2: led to these children. So to some extent, I don't
- 10:20Speaker 2: want to hear your complaints too much.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:21Speaker 2: But still would quite often be like massively overwhelmed as
- 10:24Speaker 2: most parents. And she was a single parent. So like
- 10:28Speaker 2: massively overwhelmed. Right, right. But sometimes she would go a
- 10:31Speaker 2: little far in the complaining. And like at one point
- 10:34Speaker 2: I'm listening to and I'm like, read the giving tree.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Oh dude dude you know what i'm talking about and
- 10:43Speaker 1: i'm like look.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Like don't be wrong i'm not i'm not like pitching
- 10:49Speaker 2: for for shell because i think that dude's pretty weird
- 10:51Speaker 2: like what little i know of his other work i'm
- 10:53Speaker 2: like i'm not saying he's not talented but he's a
- 10:55Speaker 2: weird dude but the one that kind of like throws
- 10:59Speaker 2: out all the weirdness and like just tells a really
- 11:02Speaker 2: simple story And then like, it's one of those things
- 11:05Speaker 2: that as you grow up and you about their story,
- 11:08Speaker 2: you're like, Oh shit. Like it is like, it is
- 11:13Speaker 2: the most horribly accurate thing ever. It's just like, here,
- 11:20Speaker 2: here is your job here. And now I'm references. So
- 11:23Speaker 2: I'm like, this is one of those things that like
- 11:25Speaker 2: carries over into your life. And I'm like, yeah, this
- 11:28Speaker 2: is it. Like you've had a child. For the rest
- 11:32Speaker 2: of your life. Not while they're a dumb little kid.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Not when they turn 18. The rest of your damn life.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Your job. Is to take care of whatever they need.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:45Speaker 2: There's times when they can go too far. And ask
- 11:48Speaker 2: too much. But for the most part. Your job is
- 11:50Speaker 2: to be like. Alright what do you need. And that's.
- 11:54Speaker 2: For the rest of your life. Until you are once again. Beaten.
- 11:58Speaker 2: And there's.
- 12:00Speaker 1: And that's it.
- 12:01Speaker 2: They'll still come back and be like well. There's my situation.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Like I was like. God this is so horribly frighteningly accurate.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Of life.
- 12:12Speaker 1: No it's. Brian I was going to. I was hoping
- 12:17Speaker 1: you were going to say giving tree. Because. Because.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Because you have way more invested in it than I do.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I just saw the truth and try to preach it
- 12:25Speaker 2: to other people.
- 12:26Speaker 1: No, I've got a little bit of a different read
- 12:30Speaker 1: on that story. OK, because because kids, I would say
- 12:37Speaker 1: you you it doesn't feel like a sacrifice. I mean,
- 12:42Speaker 1: it's like a sacrifice, but it doesn't. For me, it's like,
- 12:45Speaker 1: what else do I got to do?
- 12:48Speaker 2: But even in the book, the tree doesn't really complain.
- 12:51Speaker 2: It's just like, all right, here, take care of this.
- 12:55Speaker 2: But as time goes on, I, being the bastard that
- 12:58Speaker 2: I am, sound like more and more of like, wow.
- 13:01Speaker 2: It's like, Jesus. This is insane.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Okay. All right. Giving tree. All right. Yeah. I, in
- 13:10Speaker 1: a nutshell, see... the giving tree on, on level one
- 13:17Speaker 1: as a really fucked up story. Cause on the first,
- 13:22Speaker 1: on the first, on the first level, on the highest level,
- 13:25Speaker 1: it's supposed to be, I guess on the surface about
- 13:29Speaker 1: unconditional love.
- 13:31Speaker 2: It is true love for this kid and it never
- 13:34Speaker 2: goes away. Right.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Um, okay. So that's on the surface. Now you peel
- 13:39Speaker 1: back a layer of the giving tree and, uh, you
- 13:43Speaker 1: could say that it's also about love without boundaries, about
- 13:51Speaker 1: not having a, a line that you won't cross when
- 13:56Speaker 1: you love somebody. All right. This kind of, uh, selfless
- 14:01Speaker 1: love that, uh, they talk about in, um, that they
- 14:08Speaker 1: talk about in, uh, uh, Disney movies and, you know, romantic, perfect, Love,
- 14:13Speaker 1: you know, conquers all love, you know. But the love,
- 14:23Speaker 1: and so that's love without boundaries. And what happens is
- 14:28Speaker 1: that tree loves that kid so complete, but unhealthily, unhealthily.
- 14:36Speaker 1: We'll just say this is a very codependent relationship between
- 14:40Speaker 1: the tree and this kid. This kid, like, brings... Brian,
- 14:49Speaker 1: this is going to be the funniest episode for you
- 14:52Speaker 1: in the world. All right? You know the stories. So,
- 14:57Speaker 1: this tree, this kid brings other people to make out
- 15:04Speaker 1: in front of the tree. I mean... This kid abuses
- 15:17Speaker 1: this tree psychologically and physically carving into it.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 15:24Speaker 1: And then ripping it apart piece by piece by piece, taking, taking, taking.
- 15:33Speaker 1: And this tree never says enough. This tree just says,
- 15:38Speaker 1: keep taking, keep taking. I've got nothing left, but keep taking.
- 15:43Speaker 1: And the kid doesn't say, thank you. The kid is
- 15:47Speaker 1: a vampire that just sucks this tree down to a stump.
- 15:54Speaker 1: And then when the tree's got nothing left, he comes
- 15:59Speaker 1: back and goes like, guess what? I've wasted my life.
- 16:04Speaker 1: And I'm, I've, all I've done is taken my entire life.
- 16:09Speaker 7: All right.
- 16:10Speaker 1: And absorbed and eaten my entire life. And now I
- 16:16Speaker 1: can't do anything. But I'm now alone. And all I
- 16:21Speaker 1: have is this person that I've decimated.
- 16:26Speaker 2: And I'm still going to use you. The only thing
- 16:31Speaker 2: you are good for now. I'm still going to use
- 16:34Speaker 2: you for that. Because I am old and tired. There's
- 16:37Speaker 2: only one thing left I can do. And you're good
- 16:39Speaker 2: for that.
- 16:40Speaker 1: And so now that it's all over and you're almost dead,
- 16:44Speaker 1: I'm almost dead. I'm just going to put my butt
- 16:47Speaker 1: on you. That's the last insult I can do to you.
- 16:52Speaker 1: And so I'm like, on that level, the story is
- 16:58Speaker 1: a horror story, but it's a warning. It's a warning
- 17:02Speaker 1: about how you can love somebody and they take advantage
- 17:08Speaker 1: of that.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Most definitely and see that's the thing i always use
- 17:13Speaker 2: it as that example for parents who are just like
- 17:16Speaker 2: oh my god why did i have these kids and
- 17:18Speaker 2: i'm like what guess what it's not going anywhere it's
- 17:21Speaker 2: not i won't use it for that i think it
- 17:24Speaker 2: is like it is an amazing piece of literature because
- 17:27Speaker 2: i the person that nobody wants to have children with
- 17:32Speaker 2: so thank god i don't have any but I'm also
- 17:35Speaker 2: coming at it from the other end and like the
- 17:38Speaker 2: way that I've always had to connect with it.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:41Speaker 2: I'm that damn kid. And I spent my entire life
- 17:45Speaker 2: and I don't have my shit together and things will
- 17:48Speaker 2: fall apart. Who am I with? Who am I like shit?
- 17:52Speaker 2: I have to go bother you again. I'm just like, hey,
- 17:57Speaker 2: I'm that kid. And yet I'm this far into my
- 18:00Speaker 2: stupid life. I'm an old man now and I'm still
- 18:03Speaker 2: not done with it. I'm still pestering other people because, oh, well,
- 18:06Speaker 2: can't get this shit together either. Hey, can I get
- 18:11Speaker 2: some branches from you, man? Yeah, that's I'm that damn kid.
- 18:16Speaker 2: And I'm just like, I hate that. And yet, that's
- 18:19Speaker 2: how surprisingly, creepily accurate this book is. That it works
- 18:24Speaker 2: on all of those levels. All of those different avenues
- 18:28Speaker 2: and views and ways that you can take it to heart.
- 18:32Speaker 2: It works. Like, damn you, Shell. You're a creepy dude.
- 18:36Speaker 2: And you're with this master base.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. You look at his picture on the back
- 18:41Speaker 1: of those books, he looks like.
- 18:42Speaker 2: He's a creep!
- 18:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. And, okay.
- 18:45Speaker 2: And so.
- 18:46Speaker 1: So, so yeah, right. Yeah. You, you see it from
- 18:48Speaker 1: that point of view, but you're not that kid and everything.
- 18:50Speaker 2: I mean, you know, that kid, but that kid, I'm
- 18:53Speaker 2: not the kid all the time, hopefully, but there's many
- 18:57Speaker 2: a time when I've been that dang kid.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Well, I know from a parent's point of view, if
- 19:02Speaker 1: my kid doesn't matter their age, you know, from the
- 19:05Speaker 1: tree point of view, Uh, the kid gets the kid.
- 19:09Speaker 1: If the kid needs help, the kid needs help and
- 19:11Speaker 1: everything doesn't matter if they're 48, doesn't matter if there's
- 19:14Speaker 1: 62 and I'm, you know, a hundred.
- 19:16Speaker 2: It is. Like I said, it's part of being a parent.
- 19:19Speaker 2: It's never going to go away for the rest of
- 19:21Speaker 2: your life. You're not only responsible for this kid, but
- 19:25Speaker 2: they're going to show up. They're going to need something eventually.
- 19:28Speaker 2: And you got to help them. Like that's how it works. Yep.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Now I'm going to say one more layer of giving tree. Okay.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I've just got to.
- 19:36Speaker 2: All right.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I've heard hypothetically. All right. I got to be careful
- 19:46Speaker 1: about saying this. All right. We've got Shel Silverstein as
- 19:49Speaker 1: a national treasure. Sure. You know, you're not the first
- 20:00Speaker 1: person who, when I say that goes like, what the hell? Anyway.
- 20:05Speaker 1: All right. National treasure. Shel Silverstein. Um, So I'm just
- 20:11Speaker 1: going to say there are, I'm just going to say
- 20:16Speaker 1: in a total fictional world, once upon a time, there
- 20:21Speaker 1: was a children's author, not Shel Silverstein. This is a
- 20:24Speaker 1: made up person. And this made up children's author was
- 20:31Speaker 1: a nudist who hung around his house with no clothes
- 20:36Speaker 1: on and would always be in the hot tub. with
- 20:39Speaker 1: no clothes on. And so this fictional made up never, uh,
- 20:46Speaker 1: never existed in reality. Children's author may have had made
- 20:54Speaker 1: improper advances to people, not under 10, but not 18.
- 21:07Speaker 2: I mean, that happens a lot more than should.
- 21:12Speaker 1: So, if that fake made-up author wrote a book called
- 21:23Speaker 1: The Giving Bush, The Giving Stick, The Giving Stick, that
- 21:31Speaker 1: story could be about a person preying on innocent love.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Oh, wow. Innocent, naive love. As I've said, he's a
- 21:56Speaker 2: weird dude.
- 21:56Speaker 1: He's a weird dude.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I always thought so much of what was going on
- 22:01Speaker 2: in those other books. I mean, again, to me, The
- 22:03Speaker 2: Giving Tree was the outlier of like, well, this one's
- 22:05Speaker 2: not weird. It's just sad and depressing and horribly wrong
- 22:09Speaker 2: in many ways, but like not in the creepy way
- 22:12Speaker 2: that so many other ones are. But that is one
- 22:14Speaker 2: of those things that even as a kid, what is
- 22:17Speaker 2: the one with the kid in the bakery, the night
- 22:20Speaker 2: bakery or whatever that one is? I was trying to
- 22:22Speaker 2: find it, but I don't know. Like, That one, I mean,
- 22:25Speaker 2: the illustrations in the book, like, the kid, like, falls
- 22:29Speaker 2: out of his clothes at one point. You know how
- 22:32Speaker 2: that happens. Right, right, right. So I'm like, in the
- 22:36Speaker 2: world we're in now, I'm like, I can't believe they
- 22:38Speaker 2: haven't already attacked him for that kind of shit anyway. So,
- 22:42Speaker 2: plus all the weird shit in Where the Sidewalks. Well, dude.
- 22:46Speaker 2: All kinds of weird stuff going on in that book.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Well, see, it's made me, like, go like, hmm, do
- 22:51Speaker 1: I want to keep my editions of those books, you know,
- 22:55Speaker 1: I mean, cause I've really always loved them and, uh,
- 22:58Speaker 1: always loved those books, those books of poetry and everything. And,
- 23:01Speaker 1: you know, I, I kind of like rediscovered them later
- 23:04Speaker 1: and I, I, I, uh, really enjoyed how counter-cultural they were,
- 23:09Speaker 1: you know, and just like of the time, you know, uh,
- 23:12Speaker 1: it's like, why don't you take a bath, man? And
- 23:13Speaker 1: he goes like, because of the wars that people fighting
- 23:16Speaker 1: and the killing that's going on.
- 23:18Speaker 2: It's just a weirdo hippie, man.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Yeah. It's just a weirdo hippie. And I was going like, man,
- 23:21Speaker 1: you don't hear weirdo hippie stuff anymore. And, uh, and,
- 23:25Speaker 1: and kids books, you know, I mean, it was just
- 23:27Speaker 1: like part of it, you know? And so, and so
- 23:29Speaker 1: I like that aspect of it, but yeah. And I
- 23:31Speaker 1: love the illustrations, you know, but, um, uh, yeah. Another,
- 23:37Speaker 1: you know, questionable, dubious person who, uh, you know, uh,
- 23:43Speaker 1: you know, if you look at them, you'd go like, stick,
- 23:46Speaker 1: keep away from my children.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I mean, weird.
- 23:51Speaker 1: It looks like a deranged ice cream man, you know?
- 23:53Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. I don't trust it.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I don't trust them at all. No, absolutely not.
- 23:59Speaker 2: This is, uh, I mean, many a time back in
- 24:04Speaker 2: the day, we'd, we'd enter into the episode with some
- 24:07Speaker 2: like unconventional geek activities. So yeah. Yeah. That's one of
- 24:12Speaker 2: those of like, hey, you've heard of books before, right?
- 24:16Speaker 1: Right, right, right, right, right.
- 24:17Speaker 2: You know, these are some of you, you might want
- 24:19Speaker 2: to check out if you're like, you know, a small child.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 24:24Speaker 2: But just don't listen to the horror show. We just
- 24:26Speaker 2: prescribed with either of those. So yeah, it's fine.
- 24:29Speaker 1: No, two to keep off the, keep away from your kids.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Don't read your kids a gilving tree. It gives them
- 24:34Speaker 1: a completely warped, deranged view of love, you know?
- 24:39Speaker 2: Um yes yeah exactly yeah books yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Yeah i keep saying i'm going to start reading books
- 24:48Speaker 1: uh more now that i've got readers and everything but
- 24:51Speaker 1: that has not happened.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Oh i know better i don't know how to read
- 24:55Speaker 2: i just know of these stories you know.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah i miss walking around with uh trashy
- 25:01Speaker 1: horror paperbacks you know uh i used to always it
- 25:05Speaker 1: used it was the equivalent of scrolling your phone and
- 25:07Speaker 1: everything you just You'd be somewhere, you'd break out your paperback,
- 25:11Speaker 1: you'd read a couple of chapters of Misery, and then, oh, hey,
- 25:15Speaker 1: something's going on. You know, you'd put your book away.
- 25:20Speaker 1: You know, them days.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Just to clarify, I did find it, and it's not Shell.
- 25:26Speaker 2: So I still think he's a weirdo, but that one
- 25:28Speaker 2: I'm describing is the Maurice dude. Maurice Sendak.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Oh, Maurice Sendak. Dude, great. there's a great documentary I
- 25:39Speaker 1: saw on.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, dude. Oldest thing I've ever said in
- 25:44Speaker 1: my life. There was a great documentary on that author
- 25:48Speaker 1: on PBS Frontline.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I think they just issued you your first
- 25:58Speaker 2: issue of AARP. It showed up on your porch right now.
- 26:02Speaker 5: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
- 26:06Speaker 2: But no, just to clarify, I don't want to send
- 26:09Speaker 2: out wrong information, but I loved Where the Wild Things
- 26:13Speaker 2: Are as a kid. And if you want to cross over,
- 26:16Speaker 2: that movie's awesome.
- 26:17Speaker 1: It's not a bad movie, man.
- 26:19Speaker 2: But he also wrote some weird stuff, too.
- 26:21Speaker 1: It's hard to be a children's author, man.
- 26:25Speaker 2: People are going to People are going to come down
- 26:28Speaker 2: on you even more than if you're a regular weirdo author.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Keep away from people's children
- 26:33Speaker 1: is what the... It's for the best, really. Keep the
- 26:36Speaker 1: artists away from children. All right? That's basically the message here.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Just give me an art. I like art.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Just do it over there. Yeah, just do it over there.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Just do it over there.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Just one of those solo weird artists that hangs out
- 26:47Speaker 2: in their loft somewhere.
- 26:48Speaker 1: It's fine. Right, right, right. Just don't babysit the kids,
- 26:51Speaker 1: you know? Don't invite an artist to babysit your kids.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Just play it safe. No!
- 26:57Speaker 2: In the movies i mentioned the where the wild eggs
- 27:02Speaker 2: are movie so there you go have you seen any
- 27:07Speaker 2: movies lately.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Wow all right right.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Right how that transition worked that was fantastic before we.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Just you know we just yeah throw all artists under
- 27:17Speaker 1: the bus.
- 27:19Speaker 2: I like artists i'm a artist.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I love them too I'm going.
- 27:23Speaker 2: To do some weird stuff that comes with it. I
- 27:26Speaker 2: defend it all the time, actually. I'm just like, there's
- 27:29Speaker 2: a lot of stuff that I think I will look
- 27:31Speaker 2: at and be like, that pretentious bullshit. But I will
- 27:35Speaker 2: be the first one to be like, but you keep
- 27:37Speaker 2: making it. Because if you can't make that, that means
- 27:40Speaker 2: this thing over here that I love and I think
- 27:43Speaker 2: is awesome that some other weirdo thinks is crap, I
- 27:46Speaker 2: don't get. So it's like, no. It's like, you can't divide...
- 27:49Speaker 2: outside of legal firms like the basics of art like
- 27:53Speaker 2: you can't make those calls like you have to be
- 27:55Speaker 2: like everybody makes whatever art they want to make and
- 27:57Speaker 2: right that's how we get cool stuff so.
- 27:59Speaker 1: That's how we get cool stuff i definitely.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Will defend everybody make whatever art you want just just
- 28:05Speaker 2: the legal basics you know yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
- 28:07Speaker 2: so just.
- 28:08Speaker 1: A little human common decency yeah yeah you.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Know if you've gone into bucket of blood territory you've
- 28:14Speaker 2: gone too far It's very true. People to make your sculptures.
- 28:17Speaker 2: You've gone too far.
- 28:19Speaker 1: That's right.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Don't get me wrong. I love that movie.
- 28:21Speaker 1: That is one that came to me lately. We can
- 28:24Speaker 1: talk about that real quick. I did watch Bucket of
- 28:27Speaker 1: Blood probably about a month ago and first time seeing it. And,
- 28:31Speaker 1: you know, kind of cool. You know, Roger Corman just
- 28:33Speaker 1: passing and everything. And I thought he was a vampire.
- 28:37Speaker 1: And I was just like, Corman's never going, man. He's
- 28:40Speaker 1: just going to going.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Go and go. He's got more ridiculous movies to produce.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Right, right. And when he talks, he's as sharp as ever.
- 28:51Speaker 2: He really was. I listened to an interview that they
- 28:55Speaker 2: did just a couple of years before. He hadn't done
- 28:57Speaker 2: much before that, but he was still with it and
- 29:01Speaker 2: was like recalling memories from the fifties. Like they just happened.
- 29:04Speaker 2: And I was like, geez, unless that's crazy.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Unless that's just what he did the last, you know,
- 29:09Speaker 1: three years of his life is just talk about his
- 29:12Speaker 1: days running new world pictures. And, and, you know, they
- 29:15Speaker 1: would just walk in, record a little bit and then
- 29:17Speaker 1: walk out.
- 29:20Speaker 2: All right.
- 29:21Speaker 1: We got something for the death race, 2000 25th anniversary DVD.
- 29:25Speaker 1: All right. Is he still talking? Yeah, he's still going, man.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Just, just, uh, As long as it's not 2050. That
- 29:33Speaker 2: was rough, man. We barely made it through that episode.
- 29:37Speaker 2: We signed on to do that episode. and even i
- 29:40Speaker 2: who loves that original movie so much yeah i was
- 29:44Speaker 2: like wow this is.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Wow this is like i think this is right watch
- 29:50Speaker 1: a lot of bad movies Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, the
- 29:54Speaker 1: thing is, the 1970s and 80s and 60s Roger Corman movies,
- 29:59Speaker 1: you know, they have a level because he was hiring
- 30:02Speaker 1: people who were hungry. And so they really did like
- 30:05Speaker 1: go in and and they there's a level of craftsmanship,
- 30:08Speaker 1: even to the bad ones from that time period that
- 30:12Speaker 1: you go like, oh, this still looks like a movie. Right.
- 30:15Speaker 2: He's just like, all right, we got this set for
- 30:18Speaker 2: two more days. It's making a movie. Yes, it's feeding
- 30:23Speaker 2: off of the industry like a vampire, but at the
- 30:25Speaker 2: same time, it's like, look at that artistic drama. We
- 30:28Speaker 2: got this set for two more days. Look at this
- 30:31Speaker 2: movie of it.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Shoot the hell out of it.
- 30:33Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Yeah, but the movies weren't bad. I mean, they weren't
- 30:36Speaker 1: the best movies ever, but some of them really stick out.
- 30:40Speaker 1: He batted as well as any major of which ones
- 30:44Speaker 1: would be remembered and not.
- 30:46Speaker 2: And I've always said, I respected him as a director.
- 30:49Speaker 2: I think if you go back and look at the
- 30:51Speaker 2: stuff he actually directed, it's pretty solid. I think they
- 30:55Speaker 2: were better. He put a little more love into them
- 30:58Speaker 2: when it was one that he was directing. Definitely, as
- 31:00Speaker 2: time went on, towards the 2000s era, he was just
- 31:05Speaker 2: a businessman. He was showing up. He was setting up deals.
- 31:09Speaker 2: There's no artistic integrity involved in those. He's just making
- 31:13Speaker 2: a buck at that point. The early ones that he
- 31:16Speaker 2: was still kind of helping to write and definitely guiding
- 31:19Speaker 2: the story and direction wise. Like some of those visuals
- 31:23Speaker 2: are amazing. So like he put a lot of work
- 31:26Speaker 2: in when it was the early days and he was
- 31:28Speaker 2: really invested in them. So yeah, I was kind of
- 31:30Speaker 2: standing by him as a director, really as a producer,
- 31:33Speaker 2: he just made money and he was good at it.
- 31:35Speaker 1: So, Yeah, I mean, absolutely. Yeah, I mean, he was good. And,
- 31:39Speaker 1: I mean, his movies suffered as he realized how cheaply
- 31:43Speaker 1: you could put out content like everybody has, you know.
- 31:46Speaker 1: That's kind of how we live today.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I mean, Death Race 2050 or whatever it was, it
- 31:53Speaker 1: was like, hey, or Death Race 3000 or whatever they
- 31:56Speaker 1: called it. And you're just going like, well, yeah, you know,
- 31:58Speaker 1: this is an IP that he can make a cool
- 32:02Speaker 1: box cover on. and it really doesn't even matter the movie,
- 32:05Speaker 1: you know?
- 32:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:06Speaker 1: And, uh, good thing.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Cause it was pretty bad.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Well, the problem was there was no race. I think
- 32:13Speaker 1: they just were driving go-karts around a parking lot. It
- 32:16Speaker 1: seemed like that was a problem.
- 32:19Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 32:20Speaker 1: I mean, in the end had, I mean the, and
- 32:24Speaker 1: the Frankenstein mask was terrible. And, uh, I actually prefer the,
- 32:30Speaker 1: the Paul WSA Anderson, uh, uh, prison.
- 32:34Speaker 2: I mean, those were rough, but like that first one
- 32:37Speaker 2: was at least still a movie. It was still, they kept,
- 32:40Speaker 2: as they kept knocking off, like the ones that even
- 32:42Speaker 2: he didn't want anything to do with when they were
- 32:43Speaker 2: handing it off to other random dudes that just like
- 32:46Speaker 2: walk by in the street. Hey, you want to make
- 32:47Speaker 2: a death race sequel?
- 32:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Like they were just handing them out. But yeah, then
- 32:51Speaker 2: there were like three or four of those. And then
- 32:54Speaker 2: Roger Corman came out, you know, it was like, Oh,
- 32:56Speaker 2: I'm going to make my own sequel again. And like,
- 32:58Speaker 2: that was his, that he was still attached to his
- 33:01Speaker 2: producer or executive producer or something. And yeah, it was rough.
- 33:05Speaker 2: So yeah. Yeah. I don't think he was real concerned
- 33:08Speaker 2: about what was in these.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Oh no. He was going like, I need to pay
- 33:11Speaker 1: off this pool or something like that. I got alimony
- 33:15Speaker 1: payments or something. I don't know what it was, but, uh,
- 33:18Speaker 1: but you know that wife.
- 33:19Speaker 2: A long time she was pretty sharp too she that
- 33:21Speaker 2: last interview she was remembering stuff even more than he
- 33:24Speaker 2: was like she was really with it so they were
- 33:27Speaker 2: they were still a power couple that far into into
- 33:30Speaker 2: the run man.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Yeah no they uh no cool guy he you know
- 33:36Speaker 1: he never made any bones that he was you know
- 33:39Speaker 1: in in it for anything but the money and was
- 33:42Speaker 1: known for You know, he just thought movies had to
- 33:44Speaker 1: be good up to a certain point, and then he
- 33:46Speaker 1: realized they didn't have to be good. They could just
- 33:48Speaker 1: be like, you know, it's a recognizable IP with a
- 33:53Speaker 1: flashy new cover. I mean, that's all. He goes like,
- 33:55Speaker 1: that will sell a million copies. It doesn't matter what
- 33:58Speaker 1: is contained on the disc or on the file or
- 34:01Speaker 1: on the whatever, you know? Yeah.
- 34:03Speaker 2: You know. Well, before we get too far away from
- 34:07Speaker 2: your take on the... bucket of blood and we can,
- 34:11Speaker 2: we can get more of your take on it. But
- 34:12Speaker 2: I just want to say like, as much as, I mean,
- 34:15Speaker 2: we finally get Dick Miller in a lead role. So
- 34:17Speaker 2: that's awesome.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:19Speaker 2: But on top of that, like, even if I take
- 34:21Speaker 2: that and put it aside, cause I love Dick Miller. Um,
- 34:25Speaker 2: the fact that it's so like, it was one of
- 34:30Speaker 2: those first ones and you know, Roger being on the
- 34:33Speaker 2: cutting edge of, you know, what was going on, what
- 34:35Speaker 2: was hip. to take on the beat generation yes and
- 34:39Speaker 2: like if there's one thing that as time's gone on
- 34:42Speaker 2: that i'll just love is seeing because again do i
- 34:46Speaker 2: really want to go back in time and hang out
- 34:48Speaker 2: with the beats probably not because they're all on fucking
- 34:51Speaker 2: heroin right right right probably it insufferable junkies yeah to
- 34:56Speaker 2: see the beat generation filtered through pop culture and usually
- 35:00Speaker 2: the most mainstream pop culture is so funny to me
- 35:05Speaker 2: i just love seeing that over the.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Years yeah yeah yeah it's basically showing the beat culture
- 35:11Speaker 1: at its dying breaths you know when it's become codified
- 35:15Speaker 1: and uh formulaic and like you know kind of you
- 35:18Speaker 1: know where it's just become like a starting to become
- 35:21Speaker 1: a parody of what it started, what it was meant
- 35:24Speaker 1: to be, you know?
- 35:25Speaker 2: Most definitely.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Yeah. And it's losing ground to the hippies. That's the thing.
- 35:30Speaker 2: I'm like, I always go like, eh, anytime, like even
- 35:33Speaker 2: now there are kids that are pretty much just the
- 35:34Speaker 2: same as those hippies. And I'm always like, eh, nope,
- 35:37Speaker 2: not for me. Like hippies were just never cool. Like
- 35:40Speaker 2: I get your peace and love part of it. That's cool.
- 35:42Speaker 2: That's nice.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 35:43Speaker 2: But I'm like, you guys just, you need to take
- 35:47Speaker 2: a bath, and that's too much patchouli, and for God's sake,
- 35:50Speaker 2: those clothes. But, like, the beats were just freaking cool. Like,
- 35:54Speaker 2: everything else about them, other than their rampant drug use,
- 35:57Speaker 2: I'm just like, they liked, you know, they dressed in black,
- 36:00Speaker 2: and they looked cool, and they hung out at coffee
- 36:02Speaker 2: shops before it was fucking cool to hang out at
- 36:05Speaker 2: coffee shops. Yeah, yeah, that's true. Again, I'm an art geek. Like,
- 36:09Speaker 2: poetry is cool. There's some pretty bad beat poetry out there, but... Again,
- 36:14Speaker 2: you gotta let the good stuff come with the bad. Absolutely.
- 36:17Speaker 2: I legitimately thought, outside of all the drug use, that, like...
- 36:21Speaker 2: the beat kids that i've seen what little i've bothered
- 36:24Speaker 2: again i don't know how to read so it's not
- 36:25Speaker 2: like i'm going back reading those books but when i
- 36:28Speaker 2: see them on impressive things like the beverly hillbillies i'm
- 36:32Speaker 2: like this is what i'm talking about.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Man these people seem cool right right.
- 36:37Speaker 2: I mean don't be jealous who had his finger on
- 36:39Speaker 2: the pulse of what was going on with the youth culture.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Right right right they seem chill and disconnected but not
- 36:46Speaker 1: like hippies yeah because they had like a They were
- 36:48Speaker 1: valuing art and literature and ideas and stuff. Well, that's
- 36:53Speaker 1: what the stereotype was.
- 36:55Speaker 2: Again, the ideals of it, not just smoking weed and
- 36:59Speaker 2: having sex, which is all that hippies wanted, really. They
- 37:03Speaker 2: talk about peace and love, but mostly it's just the
- 37:05Speaker 2: love of, hey, get in the back of my van
- 37:08Speaker 2: over here and let's do it.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Let's have a love child. Right, right.
- 37:12Speaker 2: But there's so much more to the Beat Kids, because
- 37:14Speaker 2: they really.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Again, they were pretentious assholes, I'm sure. But there was
- 37:19Speaker 2: something bigger there that they were kind of striving for
- 37:22Speaker 2: that I always appreciated.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Well, a life of the mind and everything is what
- 37:26Speaker 1: you what I the image I get from it or
- 37:29Speaker 1: like expression and everything.
- 37:30Speaker 2: I mean, throwing aside the usual, you know, they didn't
- 37:34Speaker 2: want to be the cookie cutter 50s family. You know,
- 37:38Speaker 2: they didn't want to be Ozzie and Harriet. they were
- 37:40Speaker 2: a bunch of weird kids. And they, again, they were
- 37:42Speaker 2: like the goths before it was a thing. I don't
- 37:46Speaker 2: want to do your dumb regular thing. I'm in the
- 37:48Speaker 2: dark shit, man. You guys just don't understand me. It
- 37:52Speaker 2: was like the, it was the goth kids before they
- 37:54Speaker 2: were goth kids. Sure.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Sure. Absolutely.
- 37:56Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 37:57Speaker 1: But it started, you know, with like, uh, people coming
- 38:00Speaker 1: out of the war with like trauma and, uh, and
- 38:05Speaker 1: shell shocked and drug problems. And, uh, or like, you know, uh,
- 38:10Speaker 1: you know, unfulfilled expectations and kind of a disillusionment.
- 38:16Speaker 2: No wonder I'm drawn to these kids.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Exactly. Right. And, and so that was kind of like,
- 38:20Speaker 1: and they, before, you know, Kerouac and Burroughs aren't dressed
- 38:24Speaker 1: the same and like, uh, uh, sweaters and, uh, a beret,
- 38:28Speaker 1: but like the hippies, you know, it became kind of, uh,
- 38:33Speaker 1: you know, like punk or something. It became like codified
- 38:35Speaker 1: and everything. So it's, it represented some cool stuff and everything,
- 38:38Speaker 1: but you know, The people that were, you know, called
- 38:42Speaker 1: the fathers, they didn't look like that. They just looked like,
- 38:45Speaker 1: you know, just washed out people.
- 38:48Speaker 2: I mean, Burroughs, for God's sake. For God's sake. He
- 38:52Speaker 2: looked like a square.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Yeah, totally.
- 38:54Speaker 2: It's so funny that he became like so much in
- 38:57Speaker 2: that world. But I'm like, when you look at him,
- 38:59Speaker 2: you're like, whoa, that's not what I expected.
- 39:01Speaker 1: He looks like my accountant. You know, he just looks
- 39:03Speaker 1: like a.
- 39:04Speaker 2: and your grandpa and your grandpa he was so much
- 39:07Speaker 2: older than you expected it to be even when it
- 39:09Speaker 2: started like he was older than the rest of those
- 39:12Speaker 2: guys that were the up-and-coming kids so yeah he's already
- 39:15Speaker 2: on the edge of that and just was always looked
- 39:18Speaker 2: so square.
- 39:19Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah but just wrote things that make you
- 39:22Speaker 1: like throw up on yourself i write things that make
- 39:28Speaker 1: people want to throw up and to have sex with
- 39:30Speaker 1: the throw up.
- 39:33Speaker 9: Thanks.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Thanks, buddy.
- 39:36Speaker 1: That's why my parents never understood me.
- 39:44Speaker 2: But anyway, again, I think it's a really cool like that,
- 39:47Speaker 2: that movie. I mean, you can't ignore it. It's most
- 39:51Speaker 2: of what goes on in Bucket of Blood. It's like
- 39:54Speaker 2: this weird little beat culture. So I really like that
- 39:57Speaker 2: we got a movie that's set in that, not as
- 40:00Speaker 2: a throwback, like we could do that now, but like
- 40:03Speaker 2: it was coming off of, you know, pretty, again, that
- 40:05Speaker 2: was pretty early for at least being represented in pop culture.
- 40:09Speaker 2: That was a pretty early version. And it's probably not
- 40:12Speaker 2: as cheesy as the ones by the time you get
- 40:14Speaker 2: to the TV shows. It's still a little weird and edgy.
- 40:18Speaker 2: As much as you're going to get from, you know,
- 40:20Speaker 2: a silly horror movie.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's a great setting to put a horror
- 40:24Speaker 1: movie in, you know? And, you know, I mean, it's,
- 40:28Speaker 1: you know, laughably a horror movie. But, I mean, it's
- 40:30Speaker 1: really just kind of such a parody of, like, people's,
- 40:34Speaker 1: the importance of being important, you know, and everything. So
- 40:37Speaker 1: it's actually a really good story. I believe the writer
- 40:39Speaker 1: of that, and I'm just accessing my autism brain here, is,
- 40:43Speaker 1: I think it's Charles Beaumont. And I just saw another
- 40:48Speaker 1: one of his movies have shown up on the free
- 40:50Speaker 1: service called Brain Dead. And that was produced posthumanously for him.
- 40:59Speaker 1: But it was made in the 90s. It's got Bill
- 41:01Speaker 1: Pullman and Bill Paxton and Bud Cort. Do you remember
- 41:04Speaker 1: that one? It's got the weird.
- 41:06Speaker 2: That's what I was trying to look. I just, yeah,
- 41:07Speaker 2: I remember the cover now. I just brought it up
- 41:09Speaker 2: and I'm like, okay, I remember the cover. I don't
- 41:12Speaker 2: think I've seen it.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Roger Corman produced and it's like a good nineties Roger
- 41:20Speaker 1: Corman because yeah, the script had been laying around for
- 41:23Speaker 1: 30 years, you know, so it's really good. And, um, but, uh,
- 41:26Speaker 1: but yeah, it's, it's got, it's like one of those
- 41:28Speaker 1: mind fuck movies, you know, where you're just like, uh,
- 41:30Speaker 1: going down, uh, uh, what's real, what's not. And if
- 41:34Speaker 1: people keep changing, uh, identities, I mean, it's really cool. And, uh, just, uh,
- 41:40Speaker 1: from the unreliable narrator or a completely, uh, subjective narrator,
- 41:45Speaker 1: you know, narrator. And, uh, so yeah, I definitely recommend
- 41:49Speaker 1: that if you haven't seen it, it's, it's good. It's
- 41:51Speaker 1: very 1990, you know, uh, Uh, and the, uh, yeah,
- 41:57Speaker 1: the right. Anyway, nevermind. It's a fantastic movie. You should
- 42:01Speaker 1: totally see it.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Uh, one more for the list.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Yeah. And he wrote that really weird twilight zone, uh, uh,
- 42:10Speaker 1: called the howling man when it takes place in a monastery.
- 42:13Speaker 1: I think it's shot on video. I've never watched it.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that whole season where they were shooting it on
- 42:19Speaker 2: the video, it's just so unnerving. It just looks so different.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love that look, but it doesn't
- 42:27Speaker 1: look like Twilight Zone. It feels like, you know, a
- 42:30Speaker 1: PBS Masterpiece Theater or something presents the Twilight Zone.
- 42:32Speaker 2: It's just like a presentation that went with Art Carney
- 42:35Speaker 2: every year I see it. I'm just like, it just
- 42:37Speaker 2: looks like a... We're showing this presentation of a thing
- 42:40Speaker 2: we shot at the mall last week on the video
- 42:43Speaker 2: camera that was up there.
- 42:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:45Speaker 2: It doesn't look professional.
- 42:48Speaker 1: It's like when you go into a friend's house or something,
- 42:50Speaker 1: you're going to watch a movie, and they've got that
- 42:53Speaker 1: real screen setting or super smooth setting on their TV.
- 42:58Speaker 1: And you're just going like, how are you watching? Yeah.
- 43:03Speaker 1: movies with the setting on it all looks like a
- 43:06Speaker 1: terrible soap opera. You know, they go, what are you
- 43:09Speaker 1: talking about? Like, look at it.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Look at it.
- 43:11Speaker 1: It doesn't move right. We're not watching this movie with
- 43:14Speaker 1: the setting on the TV. Give me your remote. And
- 43:16Speaker 1: then I start going through the remote, you know, let's
- 43:18Speaker 1: go to the setting. Where's that stupid setting? They go like, man,
- 43:20Speaker 1: you're going to mess up my TV.
- 43:22Speaker 2: You're like, shut up. Shut up.
- 43:24Speaker 1: We're not watching this movie in smooth scan mode. I
- 43:28Speaker 1: don't know what's wrong with you.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Any of those when they got too fancy for their
- 43:32Speaker 2: own good, like that first wave of HD that I saw. Yeah.
- 43:36Speaker 2: And like the, the first thing that really bought into
- 43:38Speaker 2: it was like live sports.
- 43:40Speaker 1: And I'm like, I'm.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Watching it on probably a thing at the screen at
- 43:44Speaker 2: the freaking circuit city or something. And they've got football
- 43:48Speaker 2: from somewhere being beamed in and it just looks so unnatural.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Like it's just weird.
- 43:55Speaker 2: I'm just like, what? is this? And how do I
- 43:58Speaker 2: not watch movies like this?
- 44:00Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. But people put that on there. It's like
- 44:03Speaker 1: high frame rate or something. And it's just like, wow,
- 44:08Speaker 1: you've been watching movies and shows on this with this setting.
- 44:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:12Speaker 1: Holy cow you poor sick bastard am.
- 44:16Speaker 2: I related only because i've seen this a lot in
- 44:18Speaker 2: the last week and i wanted to get your take
- 44:20Speaker 2: on it right have you seen people posting images from
- 44:23Speaker 2: these new like super 4k extra high def release that
- 44:28Speaker 2: just came out but they're using ai to like fix
- 44:33Speaker 2: things in it to like smooth out any edges because
- 44:37Speaker 2: they want everything to be smooth and look perfect and
- 44:40Speaker 2: they're using ai to do it what so there's like
- 44:44Speaker 2: a version of i don't think it's original they it's
- 44:47Speaker 2: like they took the they recently re-released a super redone
- 44:52Speaker 2: version of jaws 3d and jaws the revenge but people
- 44:56Speaker 2: are like freezing And they're like, the people in the stands,
- 45:00Speaker 2: like on Jaws 3, there'll be a shot of people
- 45:02Speaker 2: in the stands, and they have those weird monster faces
- 45:05Speaker 2: that when you plug shit into AI, like I'm probably
- 45:08Speaker 2: going to do for this episode. but it's like, it's
- 45:10Speaker 2: like when you plug in a bunch of nonsense into
- 45:12Speaker 2: AI and be like, me a scary image, or you
- 45:15Speaker 2: don't even have to tell it to make it scary.
- 45:17Speaker 2: It just makes you a horror face that like looks
- 45:19Speaker 2: just enough human to be disturbing, but doesn't look like
- 45:23Speaker 2: an actual person. It looks like a zombie of some sort.
- 45:26Speaker 2: And that's, what's in the background, but on these blue
- 45:28Speaker 2: rays that are coming out, that's what, that's what it
- 45:30Speaker 2: looks like now. And it's like, is nobody checking before
- 45:35Speaker 2: you're slapping it in the cellophane and putting it out
- 45:37Speaker 2: on the shelf somewhere.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:39Speaker 2: So I didn't know if you'd.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Seen any of this. No, this is kind of blowing
- 45:43Speaker 1: my mind. I don't really understand half of what you
- 45:46Speaker 1: just said. I'm trying to understand that they took Jaws
- 45:50Speaker 1: 3D and Jaws 3D.
- 45:51Speaker 2: The best of the series, obviously.
- 45:53Speaker 1: They're trying it out, and they're doing a super 4K version.
- 45:59Speaker 1: And then the studio is using AI to add detail
- 46:04Speaker 1: that wasn't there.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Isn't that nice of them? Mm-hmm.
- 46:08Speaker 1: Are you joking?
- 46:09Speaker 2: I'm finding an image. I'm going to send it to
- 46:12Speaker 2: you now so you can see what I'm talking about.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Are you saying that George Lucas tinkering around with Star
- 46:22Speaker 1: Wars is just going to be the norm? The movies
- 46:28Speaker 1: that you have grown and loved and like just the
- 46:30Speaker 1: way they are, like Jaws 3 and Jaws the Revenge,
- 46:34Speaker 1: I'm not going to be able to get a decent
- 46:36Speaker 1: copy of Jaws the Revenge.
- 46:39Speaker 2: Oh, I know you're a little upset about that part
- 46:42Speaker 2: of it more than anything. Okay, I found at least
- 46:48Speaker 2: the one that keeps coming up that I saw. Let
- 46:51Speaker 2: me see if I can send it here.
- 46:52Speaker 8: Oh.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Zoom in on some of those people's faces. There's a
- 46:58Speaker 2: worse one, too. Let me see if I can find it.
- 47:01Speaker 2: There's another one that showed up that's just like, what
- 47:03Speaker 2: the hell are they doing?
- 47:06Speaker 1: Yeah, they've got weird monster. Yeah, they've got those weird
- 47:09Speaker 1: distorto faces. But you would have to pause the movie, right?
- 47:13Speaker 1: And zoom in, zoom in, zoom in, zoom in, zoom in,
- 47:14Speaker 1: zoom in.
- 47:15Speaker 2: I'm assuming, but still, this is what they're doing. And like,
- 47:18Speaker 2: nobody cares or is checking this kind of crap.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that's, I don't like that. I don't like it.
- 47:25Speaker 1: I mean, what are they going to do? I mean,
- 47:26Speaker 1: are they going to, they, all right. When the DVD
- 47:29Speaker 1: first came out, all right. For me, it was distracting.
- 47:32Speaker 1: Because I was used to crap on crap.
- 47:35Speaker 2: I like grainy on top of grainy on top of grainy.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Exactly. And when I first started watching DVD, I was
- 47:42Speaker 1: going like, I don't like this. This is like, whatchamacallit,
- 47:46Speaker 1: I can see the makeup strokes on their faces.
- 47:49Speaker 2: There's another horror show I just added on there.
- 47:53Speaker 1: And I was... Oh, that's messed up.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Oh, messed up. Like it's a nightmare. And I'm like,
- 48:02Speaker 2: why would you do that to your movie? Like you're
- 48:04Speaker 2: the studio. You own this property. Why would you mess
- 48:07Speaker 2: with it and do that?
- 48:09Speaker 1: Do that. I mean, they're obviously testing it out on.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Masterpieces like Jaws 3D and Jaws the Revenge.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Nobody gives two shits about.
- 48:21Speaker 2: The hell are you saying?
- 48:22Speaker 1: I mean, Jaws 3D.
- 48:22Speaker 3: Jaws 3D.
- 48:26Speaker 1: Well, it's got your Leah Thompson in it, but Jaws.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Oh, that's probably what sold me, but.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Yeah, listen, well... It's just.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Really kind of a fun story, like... taking Jaws and
- 48:35Speaker 2: jamming it into SeaWorld is a fun story.
- 48:38Speaker 1: It's kind of like, uh, whatchamacallit, it's kind of like, uh,
- 48:41Speaker 1: something Michael Crichton would do.
- 48:43Speaker 2: I mean, it is sort of like, you know, here's
- 48:45Speaker 2: the most dumb thing we could do. What if we
- 48:47Speaker 2: put a bunch of sharks in here with all these
- 48:50Speaker 2: stupid people?
- 48:51Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, right. What if there was, like, a city
- 48:54Speaker 1: underwater and Jaws was coming at them, you know? Um, uh,
- 48:59Speaker 1: Jaws at SeaWorld. I mean, it's actually a sick, sick joke,
- 49:02Speaker 1: you know? Um... Those, those, those, those great, those, uh,
- 49:06Speaker 1: orcas would be like, please kill me. Please kill me.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Please get me out of here.
- 49:10Speaker 2: One way or the other. Get me out of here, man.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Exactly. Exactly. Jaws 3D should have made an intrusion on
- 49:16Speaker 1: that Blackfish documentary on Netflix. Oh my gosh. What was the...
- 49:27Speaker 1: So Jaws 3D was the first movie. I saw it
- 49:30Speaker 1: when I was eight years old in the theater. My
- 49:32Speaker 1: mom took me. We sat, we put on the 3D
- 49:36Speaker 1: glasses and.
- 49:40Speaker 1: What happened about 45 minutes into the movie? It was
- 49:44Speaker 1: the first time in a movie theater ever. I said,
- 49:47Speaker 1: this isn't very good.
- 49:51Speaker 2: Damn you. How can you say that?
- 49:54Speaker 1: And I was eight and I was going like, man,
- 49:56Speaker 1: I was really excited about this. I remember at the
- 49:58Speaker 1: beginning of Jaws 3D, they had a trailer for Metal Storm,
- 50:03Speaker 1: the destruction of Jared Sin. Do you remember that one?
- 50:06Speaker 2: This explains a lot about you.
- 50:08Speaker 1: Yeah, right, right, right, right. That Charles Band movie? Yeah.
- 50:11Speaker 2: You were excited about Metal Star.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Dude, I was like, Metal Star. I was excited about Megaforce,
- 50:17Speaker 1: and they never took me, and then I watched it
- 50:19Speaker 1: years later, and I was like, oh, God. Yeah, well, yeah,
- 50:21Speaker 1: my parents had some.
- 50:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I've just recently seen that, and I'm like, what?
- 50:26Speaker 1: Wow.
- 50:26Speaker 2: What was going on?
- 50:27Speaker 1: Whoa. Whoa.
- 50:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:31Speaker 1: Not everything could be a blockbuster, you know. Yeah, yeah, so.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Bucket of Blood. Or Jaws 3D. Jaws Revenge. No, AI stuff.
- 50:42Speaker 1: There is a guy named Damon Packard who made a
- 50:47Speaker 1: great underground film maybe in the early 2000s called Reflections
- 50:53Speaker 1: of Evil. Now, Reflections of Evil, I don't know where
- 50:57Speaker 1: you see it. You probably can see it online on
- 50:59Speaker 1: his YouTube channel. I got like a bootleg DVD of it.
- 51:03Speaker 1: And it's basically like this guy spent all his money
- 51:07Speaker 1: and made this movie. And back when it was like
- 51:10Speaker 1: crazy to do that. And he made this movie called
- 51:14Speaker 1: Reflections of Evil, which has some of these great, great,
- 51:21Speaker 1: great ideas in it. And great homages. There is a
- 51:27Speaker 1: scene where he shows a young Steven Spielberg directing his
- 51:32Speaker 1: first TV movie. called Something Evil, which is a real
- 51:35Speaker 1: thing Spielberg did. And they got the Spielberg lookalike, and
- 51:41Speaker 1: they're showing him making this movie in Reflections of Evil.
- 51:45Speaker 1: It's just the funniest damn thing you've ever seen in
- 51:47Speaker 1: your life, all right? And he's always taking pot shots
- 51:51Speaker 1: at Spielberg and Lucas because he's our age. And Damon
- 51:55Speaker 1: Packard made this movie. It is great. It is great.
- 51:59Speaker 1: And a big fan of his. From that movie. But
- 52:02Speaker 1: I think he's, like, you know, probably a crazy person.
- 52:05Speaker 2: And it's called The Fablemans, you say, right?
- 52:07Speaker 1: No, no! Which I loved. I loved that movie. Spielberg
- 52:15Speaker 1: is back. And Damon Packard then, now he, but now
- 52:19Speaker 1: Damon Packard has, like, gotten into, like, AI. And so
- 52:25Speaker 1: it's just crazy ideas that he's making on these AI programs.
- 52:29Speaker 1: And so he made, like, A typical day in John
- 52:33Speaker 1: Carpenter's life. And it's the funniest damn thing you ever saw.
- 52:38Speaker 1: Because John Carpenter recently directed an episode of some TV
- 52:41Speaker 1: show from his couch. You know, they just set up
- 52:45Speaker 1: cameras around him. He goes like, I'm not getting up.
- 52:48Speaker 1: I'm not putting down the bong. I'm watching basketball. I
- 52:52Speaker 1: will direct your stupid TV show if I don't have
- 52:56Speaker 1: to leave the house. And they said like, we can
- 52:58Speaker 1: make that happen, John Carpenter. So he's kind of making
- 53:01Speaker 1: fun of that, and he's kind of making fun of
- 53:03Speaker 1: how much John Carpenter smokes, and just like what a
- 53:08Speaker 1: recluse John Carpenter has become. And, you know, it's got
- 53:11Speaker 1: that weird uncanny valley AI thing, and just like there's
- 53:16Speaker 1: cigarette butts everywhere, you know?
- 53:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:20Speaker 1: And they're morphing and moving like water around John Carpenter
- 53:24Speaker 1: as he's directing from a computer. And, you know, he's like, oh, sorry,
- 53:32Speaker 1: my cleaning ladies day off. Now punch into a number two.
- 53:40Speaker 2: It's a true love letter to John Carpenter.
- 53:43Speaker 1: It is a true love letter. John Carpenter is my hero.
- 53:46Speaker 1: He's bitter and old, but he's pretty cool. How long
- 53:55Speaker 1: have we been talking?
- 53:57Speaker 2: Six or eight hours. That's how it always is. You know. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Okay, okay.
- 54:07Speaker 2: And yet we've gotten to one movie that we've seen.
- 54:10Speaker 2: We watched Bucket of Blood.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Bucket of Blood. This is the Bucket of Blood episode, everybody. Yes,
- 54:18Speaker 1: I did watch that a few weeks ago. What movie
- 54:20Speaker 1: did you say you watched?
- 54:22Speaker 2: Well, I was going to, in particular, I was almost
- 54:25Speaker 2: trying to lure you into watching them. You're probably half
- 54:28Speaker 2: relieved that we didn't go down that road and we
- 54:30Speaker 2: just went for this free-for-all mode.
- 54:32Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, sure.
- 54:32Speaker 2: But first I will describe, and as I've said on
- 54:37Speaker 2: this episode and many, many before, as the old man
- 54:40Speaker 2: that I am, I'm still picking up physical media.
- 54:43Speaker 1: Yeah, man.
- 54:44Speaker 2: But this is what won me over. I saw this
- 54:46Speaker 2: when I'm in my secondhand... Physical media store. And I
- 54:50Speaker 2: see this and I don't even on the spine. I'm
- 54:52Speaker 2: not even sure what it says. It's kind of, it's
- 54:54Speaker 2: got two titles, so it's hard to make out. So
- 54:56Speaker 2: I pull it out on the cover without even getting
- 54:59Speaker 2: to the titles of the movie. They're way down here,
- 55:01Speaker 2: much smaller. It says at the top in giant letters. Oh,
- 55:08Speaker 2: I was like, well, obviously I, I need, I need this.
- 55:12Speaker 2: I don't even know what this is, but right. So
- 55:15Speaker 2: then you go down here. It is a double feature.
- 55:18Speaker 2: That is the... First one is The Million Eyes of Sumeru.
- 55:22Speaker 8: Whoa.
- 55:24Speaker 1: I like that title.
- 55:25Speaker 2: And the second is The Girl from Rio.
- 55:27Speaker 1: Okay.
- 55:30Speaker 2: Now, these... Even as I'm looking at them, I'm like,
- 55:32Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure these are like weird Italian movies that
- 55:36Speaker 2: they've just imported over here. And I probably don't have
- 55:39Speaker 2: to read. Yeah. All right. Dubbing.
- 55:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:42Speaker 2: That's what I kind of... I'm... sadly enjoying dubbing more
- 55:46Speaker 2: than i should on anything i watch anymore with sure
- 55:49Speaker 2: sure it's just so much fun i'm sorry it is
- 55:52Speaker 2: i know real film nerds hate that but i'm not.
- 55:55Speaker 1: Okay it's so funny i don't want to.
- 55:57Speaker 2: Read and it's still enjoyable especially when it's a ridiculous
- 56:00Speaker 2: movie like these are yeah but um so and i
- 56:03Speaker 2: was like this is 19 the first one is 1967
- 56:07Speaker 2: So I'm like, all right, I think I'm going to
- 56:10Speaker 2: especially I don't read much of this because, again, reading,
- 56:13Speaker 2: but I'm just kind of scanning the back here. And
- 56:15Speaker 2: the only thing I see is like this lady and
- 56:18Speaker 2: world domination in both movies. She's trying to take over
- 56:21Speaker 2: the world. I'm like, obviously, I'm going to have to
- 56:24Speaker 2: see these. Right. So I have in the last like
- 56:28Speaker 2: two weeks or so watched both of them.
- 56:30Speaker 1: OK. OK.
- 56:32Speaker 2: So I will, uh, again, I'd say spoiler alert for these.
- 56:35Speaker 2: I don't know that you can. Yeah.
- 56:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 56:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Right.
- 56:40Speaker 2: These, but this was the thing that won me over.
- 56:44Speaker 2: And I kind of feel like if you want to
- 56:45Speaker 2: start a whole podcast on this, let me know. But
- 56:47Speaker 2: I feel like, cause there's a billion podcasts out there
- 56:50Speaker 2: talking about those freaking James Bond movies. Don't get me wrong.
- 56:53Speaker 2: I've enjoyed many a James Bond movie. It's fine. They're great.
- 56:57Speaker 2: But again, like everybody's talked them to death.
- 56:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:59Speaker 2: To me, it's fascinating. The pop culture impact that I
- 57:05Speaker 2: guess those novels and then more specifically those movies had
- 57:10Speaker 2: on everything. From the time Dr. No hit the theater,
- 57:15Speaker 2: everything began to change. Everything that came after it was
- 57:19Speaker 2: just aping the hell out of those movies.
- 57:23Speaker 1: It was like Star Wars.
- 57:23Speaker 2: Even when it started, it had that much impact. Everything
- 57:27Speaker 2: that came from the mid-60s on... was impacted by James Bond,
- 57:33Speaker 2: and maybe nothing was as much until Star Wars came along. Like,
- 57:37Speaker 2: there may have been no other weird, like, cultural, you know,
- 57:40Speaker 2: blip on the radar there until you hit Star Wars,
- 57:44Speaker 2: because everything, much again, so much so that everything to
- 57:49Speaker 2: the point where it was watered down and TV shows
- 57:51Speaker 2: were doing it, that Back to My Go-To, which, again,
- 57:54Speaker 2: because it's on, constantly on me TV now, and the
- 57:57Speaker 2: more I see the Beverly Hillbillies, I'm like, you know
- 57:59Speaker 2: how pretty solid shit because I didn't care that much
- 58:03Speaker 2: about it when I was a kid because I'm like
- 58:04Speaker 2: eh whatever backwoods hillbilly people this seems dumb like I
- 58:07Speaker 2: didn't care about that part of it when I watch
- 58:10Speaker 2: it now I'm like it's actually pretty cleverly written because
- 58:13Speaker 2: they're not the butts of the joke like they're They're
- 58:17Speaker 2: this indirectly. They didn't even realize they're smarter than these stupid,
- 58:22Speaker 2: shallow people of Beverly Hills. And like, they end up
- 58:25Speaker 2: like kind of getting one over on him every time
- 58:27Speaker 2: with their simple wisdom.
- 58:29Speaker 1: So like, that's right. That's right.
- 58:30Speaker 2: Badly written. But they were one of those that was
- 58:33Speaker 2: around for so long and was so popular that they
- 58:35Speaker 2: hit all of the pop culture trends. So I just
- 58:39Speaker 2: recently saw one where, and it's always Jethro because he's
- 58:42Speaker 2: the cool kid. So like there's one where he wants
- 58:44Speaker 2: to get in with the beat crowd and he wears
- 58:46Speaker 2: stupid beat clothes and goes into the coffee shop and
- 58:50Speaker 2: is trying to do poetry and they have to snap
- 58:52Speaker 2: at him. And like, it's exactly like checklist of all
- 58:55Speaker 2: your beat things that we're making fun of. And then
- 58:59Speaker 2: there's another one where he's a, he wants to be
- 59:01Speaker 2: a double spy. That is what he calls himself. But no,
- 59:07Speaker 2: it just took over the pop culture so much. though
- 59:10Speaker 2: that it's in everything but that's my thing is like
- 59:13Speaker 2: there were so many movies that came out that people
- 59:16Speaker 2: don't even realize like there's the bigger there's your matt
- 59:20Speaker 2: helms and you know you've got the bigger titles that
- 59:23Speaker 2: were that kind of when you have like James Colburn
- 59:26Speaker 2: doing it, you know, it's like, it's a different, yeah,
- 59:29Speaker 2: it's a different thing because it kind of had its
- 59:31Speaker 2: own following. It did it good enough. It got its
- 59:34Speaker 2: own following, but there's all these other ones that happened
- 59:37Speaker 2: around that time that nobody even read. Like they were
- 59:40Speaker 2: just cranking them out and the new one showed up
- 59:42Speaker 2: at the theater every week. And like, you just went
- 59:45Speaker 2: there because it's like, oh, cool, whatever. Like, you know, it's,
- 59:48Speaker 2: it's like what kids were doing anyway at the point.
- 59:51Speaker 2: But these are both one of those type of things.
- 59:56Speaker 2: But the weird thing is, I guess the first one
- 59:58Speaker 2: isn't as weird. You just think maybe it was like
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: a knockoff James Bond. The weird thing is with them
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: being sort of a series, it's like if we came
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: back for another movie and went, see what Dr. No's
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: up to. I don't know what you're talking about. Let's
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: get with him and see what he's doing now. Because
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: basically through these two movies we follow the villainous lady
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: that wants to take over the world in a James
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: Watson movie.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: So it's what she's doing in the first one. And
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: then we come back and they're calling her kind of
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: by a different name. But even on the back here,
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: it's like it's still kind of a sequel. They're still
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: pretending like it's a sequel, but nobody refers to her
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: as the same name. Huh. She looks exactly the same anyway.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: So it's just like, well, I guess. I don't know.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: but I will say if, if you're only going to
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: watch one of them, the first one is so much fun.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Oh, is it?
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Okay. And just classy. The million eyes is a cool title.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: And as you get into it, it's a cool movie.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Like if you're willing to put up with a silly
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: knockoff James Bond movie, it's pretty damn cool. And like,
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: I think this one to me is a little above
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: because it, It has. It's definitely... She's sort of immersed
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: in this Asian culture, even though she's a regular old
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: white lady.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Is this Scarlett Johansson?
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: She can be that if she wants. That was a
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: robot lady. I don't know. But the.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: It's immersed in that and like shot there. So like
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: the visuals are this really cool little like window into,
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: into this culture at the time. If you take the dumb,
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: like world domination plot out of it, it's just kind
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: of cool to see the locations and like the, most
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: of it was probably real buildings. And then they'd say
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: build and the costumes that everybody's wearing. It's just sort
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: of nice from that angle.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: But, But then on top of that, you get like
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: a crazy knockoff James Bond movie going on at the
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: same time.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I like that. I mean, that's kind of
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: what I like about Danger Diabolique. It's kind of of
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: its time and, you know, kind of a James Bond
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: style kind of movie, you know?
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: But it's also pretty silly in the way that it
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: works in the James Bond, because she's like... She is
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: not winking at all. The lady that they got as
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: our lead, more or less, kind of, sort of, is
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: Shirley Eaton, who is from... She's from Goldfinger. Really? I
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: haven't watched it, but I'm pretty sure she's, like, the
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: main lady in Goldfinger.
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: I think she's the.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: the female Bond girl that gets to be, you know, the, the, yeah,
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: she is.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: We won't say her name.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: Jill Masterson, Jill Masterson from Goldfinger.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Well, that's the character's name. She is.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: I was thinking of the other character name. I was thinking.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: No, no.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: Yeah. It will get canceled if we say that name.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: I think even then they kind of, they were talking to,
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: they were talking to, that was the later one, actually.
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: Oh, good.
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: Or any of them.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: You know, Dr.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Goodhead, you know, they're pretty subtle as they went on.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not even, it makes Austin Powers seem subtle,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: you know?
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: Even by the time we get to, like, Goldeneye, we
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: get an on-the-top.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Oh my god, it's just like.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: Our last thing was on-the-top.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: Right, right, it's, uh... Yeah, we're, the train, the machine
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: is running itself at that point, you know?
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: The snake is eating its own tail.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: But, yeah, Shirley Eaton is our sort of eventually kind
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: of main character, even though she's the villain. But, yeah,
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: that was like their in. Like, well, she's from James Bond,
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: so this is, like, legit. Like, this is a real movie,
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: like James Bond, because we've got her from James Bond.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: So you've got our sort of main guy is George Nader.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: So he's technically our Bond-esque guy.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: More impressively, and I think actually gets top billing, his
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: sidekick guy is Frankie Avalon.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: So you get a like late 60s, like coming out
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: of the beach movies. I need to do something else.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: Frankie Avalon is just like a spoiled rich kid that
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: like has nothing to do. Like his dad just has
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: millions and millions of dollars. So he's just lounging around
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: on the beach where, you know, make it out with girls.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: And then when this James Bond dude comes along, he's
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: just like gets into adventures. And the other guy's like, oh, yeah,
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: I'll go with you. He's almost getting shot. A million
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: times getting into kung fu fights like you do when
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: you're in a James Bond movie.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Oh, my God, dude.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: He's just rich and has nothing else to do.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: Man, that was hilarious. Yeah, I like the casual-ass atmosphere
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: of those movies.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: Yeah, this more than most, I feel like, because George
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Nader does not seem like he gives a rat's ass
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: about his mission. He's cool and relaxed about it, but
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: at the end of the day, he's going to get
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: business taken care of. No matter who's playing him, they're
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: all still professional enough. They're like, well, I got to
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: do this. I got to go kick somebody's ass, and
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: they get the mission taken care of. This dude seems
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: like he could care less. Yeah. He's just like, oh, okay,
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: I guess I gotta go over here now.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Like, It's a very Italian kind of atmosphere. Oh, we'll
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: get to it later, you know? It's not like a
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: driven A-type personality kind of movies, you know?
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: But there's even, like, the main guy that sort of
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: shows up is this British guy who's still kind of
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: giving him his, like, oh, well, we'd like you to
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: go look into this over here. So he's sort of
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: the M of this little outfit that, like, He's just
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: there on quote-unquote vacation. He's not really here.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: I didn't tell you to go do this.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: But if you wanted to go investigate this, hey, you
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: know what? Oh, my God. It's so much fun, though.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: And even this is one of those very specific time period,
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: I guess, when this weird person, this weird actor was
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: coming off of... I've done a lot of lead roles.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: I'm also insane. I'm a horrible, horrible human being. we
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: get a nice little cameo at least a minor role
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: by klaus.
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: Kinski whoa as president boom b-o-o-n-g and he is weirdly
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: if you can imagine klaus kinski trying to be kind.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Of effeminate whoa You should do that. You'll hurt yourself.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: And it will frighten you because everything Kitsuki does is disturbing.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: It is a weird thing. Let me just say, he
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: does not omit screen time, so you're safe. You can
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: watch it and just kind of close your eyes for
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: a minute and he goes away.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: But it is a weird thing. Wow.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: That one is so much fun. I definitely recommend that one.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: I just went and went, well, I guess I gotta
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: round this out and watch the second one. I'm just like, Oh,
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: this is so not the same.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it doesn't have the same magic, does it?
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: Well, here's the problem. Let me figure out. So the
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: director of Million Eyes of Sumeru is Lindsay Shontef. I
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: don't know who that is, but as a point of comparison,
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: the director of The Girl from Rio is Jess Franco. Oh,
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: the legendary Jess Franco.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: The craftsman. The porn director. Right.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: The almost porn director. Or the full on porn director.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: Jeff Franco. Just depends on what pseudonym he was using
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: at the time. but his stuff, I don't know anything
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: about his stuff. I don't think that's the thing.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: I saw it and was like, Oh, I know him
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: by name, but I don't think I've, I, if I've
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: seen anything, I don't remember it enough to where that,
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: that I connected it with him.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: But even looking at the behind the scenes, like the
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: older version of our lead is talking about him. And
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: she's like, Oh, I didn't know he did porn when
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: I did this.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: And she's like, reputation, like, she was, like, he was
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: fine to work with, I got along with him, but,
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: you know, people kind of associate him with a certain
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: type of movie.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: That's right, yeah, absolutely, you know, like, uh, like, uh,
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: vampire lesbian movies, you know, that kind of stuff, you know, or, uh, which,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: you know, it's.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: Funny because this movie is so, to me, not that, like,
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: I'm not saying there isn't a little, but it's, like, again,
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: all the girls dress in, like, That's where I spent,
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: I think they spent most of their budget was just
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: to get the girls semi matching outfits in certain scenes.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: There's a whole lot of women. Again, this is a
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: world domination. So she's got like all these women and
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: they're all wearing this weird like giant round dress. donut-shaped
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: piece of material and the hole in the middle is
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: where they shove their head and then it just sort
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: of drapes around them at that point so if you're
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: also not wearing a shirt you get a little side
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: boob is.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: What i'm saying i get you i get you so
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: there's that.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: And then there's a scene where there's like oh this
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: girl that he was like running around with is in
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: the shower so you get a little flash there but
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: like it's pretty minimal yeah for something that that just
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: like oh Again, in the late 60s, I guess you
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: still didn't get a ton of that in legit movies. So, like, it's,
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: you know, it was probably pretty racy at the time.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: There's a scene where they kind of work in a
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: gonna be a lesbian scene, but they cut away from it.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: Which was funny because, which was funny because our leads
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: were like, yeah, that's not me. We're seeing it through
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: like a draped, like a mesh sort of thing. Yeah.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: her in bed and we assume it's her but she's
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: like if you look at it this girl's hair is
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: way longer than mine and i turned away from the
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: camera the whole time and the other lady that's like
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: a minor character comes in and it's actually her and
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: she like we see some boob and then they get
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: ready to make out and we cut away so that's
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: as racy as you're gonna get for 1969 or whatever
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: this was.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: Jess Franco, though, shot 20 hours of that scene, and
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: they kind of cut it all out.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: I mean, it's all sitting in his house.
- 1:10:30Speaker 8: If you come over, he'll shout it to you.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: He'll put it on the.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: It'd be like the scene at the beginning of the
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: howling and everything.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: Actually, it's just like him. Turn around, Karen.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: Turn around.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: He's just like Burt Reynolds in Boogie Nights. He's got
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: a screening room. He's just sitting there watching them on
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: film the old-fashioned way. This is what it was an
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: art form, man. You kids don't understand.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: Totally, dude.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: But yeah, the second one, not quite. For something that
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: should be, like I said, there's still a whole bunch
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: of girls running around with machine guns, wearing matching outfits,
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: and it seems like that part of it would be
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: enough to make it fun, but it's just... I think
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: it's because... i got about halfway in and i i
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: was like are we ever gonna get to a plot
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: right right and there really isn't like at least in
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: the first one there's this whole big crazy plot of
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: her and all these other girls that are legitimately like
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: trying to take over the world and like they just
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: don't trust men in general and i'm like yeah i
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: get that and like there's all these cool like points
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: built into the story and then you get to the
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: second one and it's like Okay. So they think this
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: guy's got money. So they like try to kidnap him.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: But at the same time, somebody else is trying to
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: kidnap him from like a different group. And they also
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: want his money. And I'm like, so. People just want
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: money in this. Yeah, this one sucks. There's not a
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: chaos organization trying to take him down. We don't ever
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: get anybody giving him real James Bond-y missions to go
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: do that. He just gets kidnapped badly a few times.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: People keep trying to take money that he may or
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: may not have on him. And that's like halfway into
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: the plot. I'm like, we've not done anything else in
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: this movie except him get into bad kung fu fights
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: and stuff. And this guy's not even as much fun
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: as our first. I don't know who this lead was,
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: but I was not thrilled with him either. So I
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: was just not having near as much fun with the
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: second one, I got to say.
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's cool, man. That's cool. You know, the sequels,
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: you know, Cannonball Run 2 is no Cannonball Run, you know.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: But the outtakes are epic. You stay through those credits, man.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Those outtakes. Dom is just a national treasure.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: National treasure, Dom DeLuise.
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: No joke, man.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: No joke. That was one of the first things I'd
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: go like, man, you remember when you'd go see a
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: movie just because it had Dom DeLuise in it?
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: Hell yeah.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: It's funny how actors just get traded out and traded
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: out over the years. It's like, you'll see something coming
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: out from.
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: You know, 1989, you go like, oh, look, it's got
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: Laurie Singer and Dom DeLuise in it. You're like, boy,
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: that was just.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: A lot of times when you would just be like, well,
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: they're a name. So we got a name much like these.
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: They're like, we got that girl from Goldfinger. Like if
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: you get a name that's recognizable, like even Dom DeLuise
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: became towards later in his career, like anything you could
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: get him in. If you were an up and coming filmmaker,
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: like that was a score, man.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: He was in the biggest movies at the time, you know,
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: when he, when he was, I mean, when he was
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: hanging out with Bert, like they were just making money.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Hand over fist.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: Like it didn't matter. They were just like super popular,
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: cranking out cash, man. Like, so that was a big deal.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: If you could get him in one of your movies,
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: like that's, that's, that's what you were going for, man.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: Absolutely. Yeah. Get me Deloese. We need a, up the
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: fun hand us.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: That's the thing though. He had like, he had skill.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: He's a good actor. I kind of want to go
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: back and rewatch it. Cause I was listening to something with,
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: with his son in it and he kept referencing how much, um,
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: how good fat so is. And that's one of those
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: I remember on cable as a kid. And I remembered
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: that it existed, but I barely remember anything from it. Yeah.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: And like, it really is like kind of a, I mean,
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: it's sort of got a little comedy baked into it,
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: but it's, pretty sad as the story goes. So like,
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: I kind of want to revisit that. Cause I feel
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: like he was probably a lot better actor than, you know,
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: he got credit for by the time he was just
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: hanging out with Bert to be the, the, you know,
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: silly sidekick character.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: So I kind of want to go back and watch that.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: And like the 12 chairs and like some of that
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: early stuff that like, he probably got a little chance to,
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: you know, actually do some acting.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I like them. I like them. And, uh, uh,
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: I probably seen that movie hot stuff. uh, a lot. And, uh,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: I think there's probably weed jokes in that, that I
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: didn't get at the time. I think he's getting like
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: super munchies and in some scene, I always wondered what
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: was going on. Right, right, right, right. I think if
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: I've watched, I mean, considering the year it came out,
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: I'm going like, yeah, this was like 1980 or something
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: like that. And Cheech and Chong type stuff was real popular. Uh,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: You know, I think that's probably what that was. But replaying,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: you know, you replay scenes from your childhood and you
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: go like, oh, that's probably what was going on there.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: There's a lot of those because I watched whatever the
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: hell I wanted growing up. So it's like I saw
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: tons of stuff I probably didn't need to see. But
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: it's funny years later. We're like, yeah, but I didn't
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: know what half of this was. I didn't get what
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: was going on half the time.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: Yeah. For real, dude, for real.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: I've rambled about a couple of mine. Did you have
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: anything else you've watched lately?
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: Okay, okay, just quick, quick, one, two, three. We'll start with,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: you were talking about Klaus Kinski, and I would say that, yeah,
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: piece of shit human being. Oh, yeah, he's a horrible,
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: horrible piece of shit. But a movie I really love
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: is Venom. from like 1980 or 81 about the snake
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: in the apartment with the uh uh like the burglars
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: and it takes place in uh like the criminals are
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: stuck in a apartment surrounded by cops in a high
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: rise and then this black mamba snake gets loose oh
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: it's a house it's a house.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: Have you not seen this This is the one I'm
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: going to bring because, again, I can almost picture the
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: video box. Like, I remember it, but I do not
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: know that I've ever sat down and watched it.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: Dude, okay. It's a killer snake movie, but I guess
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: this is the years, you know, Jaws was still influencing things,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: you know, killing animals.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Oh, it looks like Tom Hardy's in it.
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Great.
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: Oh, wait. No, that's not the same.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: No.
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: Oh, right. Oh, yeah. But, yeah, I see the box here.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: I definitely passed this on a video shelf 2,000 times.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, it is great. I saw it on, like,
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: the ABC Sunday Night Movie or something like that. And
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: I had only seen it when I was, like, 7
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: or 8 and, you know, had forgotten all about it.
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: But, um.
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: But I recently rewatched it, you know, recently in the
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: last five years. And I was like, wow, that's a
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: good freaking movie. They just hired, it takes place in England.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: And so everybody has like, you know, British accents. So
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: everybody sounds like they're acting like Sir Lawrence Olivier, you know.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: Is it supposed to be set in England? Or they
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: just all happen to have British accents?
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: No, it takes place in England. So it's got that
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: time and place, you know. And everybody's wearing trench coats. Awesome.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: Cool already. It's just got a great look to it,
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: a great vibe about it. And, I mean, it's a
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: ridiculous story. I mean, the sneak is picking off, you know,
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: these bad guys. It's got some really good faces from
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: the time period. Who was the Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry guy?
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: Whoever played that blonde who played Dirty Mary is in
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: this movie.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: Susan George?
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: Susan George is in it. Right.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: I'm looking at the list here. We got a Sarah
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: Miles and a Susan George and Sterling Hayden. Hell yeah.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: This is what I'm talking about.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: God among.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: Men sterling hayden is in it and um and uh
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: and so And so, yeah, it's a really freaking cool movie. And, yeah,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: they've got really good actors. And, you know, the backstory
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: is that Tobey Hooper was going to direct it. And
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: he directed, like, maybe two weeks. And then they fired
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: him because Tobey Hooper's crazy.
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: I was going to say, they do have him co-listed
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: on the directors here on IMDb.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: Absolutely. But he didn't get to keep the job. You know,
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: he kept getting fired.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: That happens to Tobey a lot.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: It certainly does. And if you ever... Have you ever,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: you know, cause he's just like a tech, an Austin,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: Texas hippie, you know, and he's not like from the
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: USC film school and he doesn't talk that language. He's
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: just like, uh, the greatest thing I ever saw about
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: Toby Hooper was they did a behind the scenes, a
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: documentary on him directing the toolbox murders. And, uh, it's
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: the greatest freaking documentary. I haven't been able to find it.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: I think somebody took it down, but, It's just great
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: how he's directing that movie because it's like watching David
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Lynch work or something like that. It's just like a
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: man with, like, on his own planet making a movie. And, well,
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: you know, when you see Zemeckis, he's got his animatics
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: and he's pointing always, they're always pointing a certain direction.
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: And knows how to communicate with everybody on the set
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: and get stuff done.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: Get stuff done.
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: That's not Toby's.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: That is not Toby at all. Toby, while they're, I
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: feel like I've said this story before on an earlier episode. Toby,
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: because I talk about Toby Hoover a lot.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: We have talked about him a few times.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're like doing a scene and it's
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: supposed to be a scary scene. And so, you know,
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: while everybody's shooting the movie, Toby's like sitting off in
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: the corner with a wrench in a bucket. And he's
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: just like hanging on the bucket with a wrench. And
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: I guess I'm going like, well, I guess that's how
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: he directs movies.
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: And if you watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you go like, yeah,
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: it really worked for that material.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: He likes his weird material.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: He likes his weird material. So, you know, some not
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: Toby Hooper is not the right fit for every project,
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: you know. But but I mean, he makes a but
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: he works so much in TV, you know, he he
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: must have. I don't know. I don't know, but I
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: can't go into the Toby Hooper.
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: I think you just don't have to be near as
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: connected on TV because you're just in and out. It's
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: a lot of workmen. You're just you show up. You
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: know how to work the cameras. You know how to
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: set up. You cut to this. You cut to that.
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: And you're out for the week. You know, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: I think it was a lot easier to just get
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: a one and done kind of job and not have
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: to connect with all the actors. Because they're there every week.
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: They know their character. They know what they're doing. You're
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: just there to set up the shot, call it, and
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: be done.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: Yeah, and say cut and action. Yeah. So yeah, it's
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: not so bad. But yeah, he was his own guy.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: But Venom. So it was one of the multiple movies
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: that he got fired off of in the late 70s,
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: early 80s. And I think there was like a cocaine problem.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: I mean, whatever. It was the late 70s, early 80s.
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: That never happened at that time. That never happened in Hollywood?
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: Are you kidding me?
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: Never on movies? Come on.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: Come on, dude. Man, I just can't get started on Toby.
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: Supposedly him and Kim Hinkle were going to make a...
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: sequel to Texas Chainsaw Massacre called Beyond the Valley of
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: What era was this?
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: This was.
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: After 2 or before 2?
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: No, no, before 2. This was when he went to
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: Hollywood after Texas Chainsaw Massacre and he had a deal.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: You know, people love Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He got, you know,
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Ridley Scott and William Friedkin really loved that movie and
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: so they were championing him for a while and that's
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: probably how he got in good with Spielberg. I mean,
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: just people... loved that movie. And then, you know, he
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: made some, you know, Salem's lot and it looked like,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: you know, it was a big deal for television. And,
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: and I love the fun house, you know, amazing. I
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: don't know what I'm talking, dude. I'm just going over.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: This is the Toby Hooper filmography. What does Sam think
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: about Toby Hooper? Anyway, but a podcast, but anyway, it's okay.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: Venom is great. It's my point. My point is Venom
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: is great. And it kind of ties into another movie
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about. But then I rewatched The Howling.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: The Howling holds up. I enjoy it better than American Werewolf.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: I just think. Joe Dante's take on the werewolf stuff
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: is just incredible. All right. And it, I, I like,
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: and some people think it's a real piece of shit movie,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: but I fucking love the Howling.
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: That's what I was going to say. We ended up
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: just talking about this recently and was rewatched by someone
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: on the show. And, um, This it's been a little
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: while since I've seen it. They commented on it being
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: slower than they remembered. Oh, you find that.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: Oh, I think that movie.
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: I didn't remember that. Like, I mean, we did a
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: whole episode years and years ago, and I don't remember
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: that being an issue for me at the time.
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: So I was like, maybe it's just your connection with
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: the movie. I don't know, because I was like, I
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: didn't remember it being slow in my head.
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: The writing of that movie is so good and uh
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: the dialogue and stuff i mean still my favorite one
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: of my favorite things is the guy's racing to save
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: his girlfriend or save the heroine and he gets stuck
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: at a he has to get gas and the guy
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: won't move his car and he goes like hey buddy
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: you know some of us you know don't make enough
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: to drive a mazda you know and he's like come
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: on and uh I love that.
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: He set the bar pretty low. As someone who's had
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: a monster for many, many years.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: Yeah, well, and it's just so funny because they never
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: have to get gas in a movie when they're in
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: a high-speed race to save the lady. But it's just
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: so funny, little details like that. And Dick Miller is
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: so good in that movie. And, um, and anyway, it's
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: a great movie. It holds up. I love it. I
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: love it to death, you know? And, um, but finally
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: we'll just say, um, Venom kind of connects to this
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: other movie. I watched, uh, watched it right before the
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: show and I watched the new horror movie, Abigail.
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: All right. I have heard about it a little bit
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: here and there on the internet. So what was your
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: take on it?
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: Okay. So I didn't realize this was going to be
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: a real movie by people I actually liked. But I
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: didn't realize these were the directors of... I was going like,
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: this is kind of giving me a Ready or Not vibe.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: And then, lo and behold, it's the same dudes who
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: made it. Those guys are pretty good. Dude.
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: They've got a good track record.
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Ready or Not, some of those VHS movies,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: the first, the Scream, you know, retro requel or whatever.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: Which I had a lot of fun with. I liked
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: that first.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: One in particular.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: Absolutely. I was going like, that's what you got to do.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: You just got to wait 30 years and then make
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: a sequel, you know. I think that one from 2022
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: is fantastic. The one in New York is fine.
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: I enjoyed that one more than most. Now the whole
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: franchise has gotten itself in trouble for other outside reasons.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: We're in trouble in general if you're a screen fan
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: at this point. But those two were fine. I enjoyed them.
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: I thought the straight requel was fantastic.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: It did what the others were trying to do. It
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: did what Wes was trying to do, only it did
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: it now with all this new stuff that we're dealing with.
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: Wes would have probably loved to take a bite out
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: of that stuff, but he was gone. I feel like
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: they picked up the baton and did pretty good with it,
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: I gotta say.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of like talk. Well, it was, that
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: was kind of about toxic fan cultures, right.
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: Which is massively good. And just like becoming a celebrity
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: in quotes there, just because people have seen you, you know,
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: now everybody's ends up on the internet at any given point,
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: even if you don't want to be sometimes. So it's like,
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: it was that level of like being forced into celebrity,
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: them toxic fandom, like recall bullshit. Like everything becomes a,
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: 20 years, 30 years later sequel. It addressed a lot
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: of that stuff that we didn't have even in Scream 4.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: No, no, no. Scream 4 is just like the worst
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: case scenario. I mean, Scream 3 may be worse. I
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: don't know.
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: I like 3.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: It's kind of got a Scooby-Doo kind of vibe. Yeah,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: it's a lot of fun.
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: I know people like Dragon 3, but people don't love
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: 4 either. Nobody likes 3. Just because it's playing with
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: the again, it's so within its own world that like
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: the fact that we have them running around a set
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: version of the house from the first movie is kind
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: of genius. Like for that, for that thing that they're
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: doing from the little gimmick that they're playing from the
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: first one that carries on in the second one. And like,
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: I feel like they do a pretty good job. The
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: wrap up, there's always a toss up. It could be
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: ridiculous from the, you know, Even the first one, I'm
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: sure somebody hated. But, like, from two on, every time,
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: it's like, oh, but then the end.
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the thing.
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: I'm fine with it. Whatever.
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: The Scream endings are, you know, real give and take.
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: I kind of like this ending from Scream 3 more
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: than I like the one from Scream 2. I think
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: that guy is kind of cool. I'm the director. He's
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: got that great last minute taking the bullets. The way
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: they kill him is pretty cool. But Scream 4, I
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: guess that's Julia Roberts' daughter. I didn't really care for
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: that one. It kind of goes back and forth. Scream 1,
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: I like the ending. didn't like the acting. It's the
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: acting is what it is.
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: See, I loved Emma Roberts in the fourth one. I wanted...
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: I went on the show and preached how much I
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: wanted her to make it so we could follow her.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: Because I wanted more of that crazy. Like, she's just
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: insane by the end of that.
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: And I'm just like, that's what I want. Can we
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: just follow her around? Right, right. I'm sick of seeing
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: Courtney and Kajik's face. Stop showing her and give me
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: more of Emma Roberts, damn it.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: Okay. Okay. Let me tell you about Abigail. Abigail is incredible.
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: I had an incredible... great time with this movie okay
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: i mean uh i was going to see it in
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: a theater i didn't know the directors were people i
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: liked i just thought the concept seemed pretty cool you
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: know kind of high concept and it's very much like
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: venom i guess i just like movies it's kind of
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: like reservoir dogs meets a horror movie you know and
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: and um so it's kind of like scumbags so you're
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: kind of like going like oh yeah we get to
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: watch the the supernatural element you know dispatch scumbags in
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: a cool way you know but this movie does a
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: really good job of making our main scumbag very uh
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: uh uh relatable you know uh the the the female
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: lead in it is great and the uh guy that
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: i also recognize the guy who was in uh the
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: adam wingard uh was the guest uh movie uh uh.
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: He's again better than i expected it.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: To be absolutely yeah yeah and uh so the main
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: guy from that is in it and um so the
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: cast is all really good it's all very well acted
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: uh it's got you know it all takes place in
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: a creepy rich mansion you know so you're really getting
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: some strong ready or not vibes off of it but
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: then it's also kind of combined bind with uh like
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: uh this creepy little girls genre that's becoming popular again
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: because Megan made so much money.
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: Again, have you seen that one?
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I did. I saw it in the theater. I
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: took a kid to see it. And I thought it
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: was fine.
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: I was like, it's not great. But I was like,
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: it was pretty much what I expected, only they're pretty
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: solid on some of the moments there where I'm like, oh,
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: this is moving into creepy territory. I'll give it to them.
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was kind of cool. It was
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: pretty cool. And they're making a sequel and everything. So
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: Megan is good, but I would say... Yeah, but you
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: could see this is influenced by... Or, you know, Megan's
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: got that weird scene where she comes out of the
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: elevator and starts dancing for some reason.
- 1:31:41Speaker 6: You know?
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: Yeah. There's a big scene in this movie. Well, I'm
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: just going to say that the director's... these, these, these directors, I,
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: I think they have good taste. All right. And, uh,
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: they just put stuff in movies I like to see. And, um,
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: there's a, there's a scene where like, yeah, there's a
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: dancing scene in this that is, is just fantastic. And, uh,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: I'm just going like, excellent.
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: These people read Fangoria magazine when they were growing up. And, uh,
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: this is just, you know, you can just sort of
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: tell they're kind of like, um, you know, you know,
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: drink from the same pop culture cup. And, um, And they,
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: it's really cool characters. And, you know, there's some real surprises.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: It's kind of like Ready or Not. You know, it's
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: going like, wow, this is much better than I thought
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: it was going to be. I really thought Abigail was
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: just going to be a throwaway thing. And I really
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: enjoyed it. And the guy who, the guy from The Guest,
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: I think his name is Chris something. I don't know.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: He played Beauty and the Beast and the big Dan Stevens.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: All right. He choose, he is so good in this movie, um,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: through all his different, you know, moments. Uh, and there's
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: some really cool, uh, twister ruse and, the Melissa Barrera,
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: you can tell I'm on a internet database right now.
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: She's incredible in it and she wears too much eyeliner.
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: So it's fantastic. All right. And, um, and what else
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: was she and she was she is also in scream
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: oh but she's in the scream movies okay so i
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: guess she's probably the one that got fired for having
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: an opinion.
- 1:33:27Speaker 10: That you're not oh wait is she the older yeah
- 1:33:30Speaker 10: yeah yeah right she's the one that got in trouble
- 1:33:33Speaker 10: and well one of them got way too popular and
- 1:33:37Speaker 10: she wasn't going to come back anyway more than likely
- 1:33:39Speaker 10: yeah the other one got in trouble.
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: Because she had you know an opinion so yeah it's.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: All falling exactly Yeah, yeah. Well, she's great. There's somebody
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: that's in some Ant-Man movie or something. She's great. All
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: the people are in it are great. And the little
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: girl playing the vampire is great. And there's a really good,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: you know, it's got a really good ending. But it's
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: got a really good, great sense of humor to it.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: You know, it's got kind of like that Sam Raimi
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: sense of humor to it. It's very bloody. And it's
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: very well-paced. and they do a really good job of
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: like just metering out information about the characters, you know, uh,
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: and making things come back around. It was well-written. It's
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: just a good, I mean, I would say you could
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: pick up a copy of that and just know that your,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: your 599 at the Walmart bargain bin is safe.
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: Uh, if they had any, if they had, if they
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: had those.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: If they still had those, um, It's a great movie.
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: What did I put in there? The Dan Stevens has
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: a real Bruce Campbell kind of thing going on.
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: Nice.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: Which is cool. They have the good taste to use
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: the John Carpenter font during the end credits. I started
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: at the end of my notes. My eyes are terrible.
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: Let's see here.
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: I'm already there.
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: The Abigail creepy little girl. I'll just read out. I'll
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: try to read my notes here and everything. uh abigail
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: creepy little girl movies so you got you know oh
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: you know like the exorcist you know probably is the
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: grandfather the godfather of those and they do a great
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: exorcist homage in this um kind of a deep cut
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: where you just kind of got to know um uh
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: so it's kind of like like the sugar plum fairy
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: from uh cabin in the woods got their own movie
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: you know all right yeah And, uh, bad guys running, yeah, so, uh,
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: it's like all the people are, because they're bad guys,
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: they're all cool, you know? And they did a real
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: good job, uh, uh, they did a good job making everybody, uh,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: you know, distinct and, and whatnot. Uh, and it kind
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: of has, like, you know, Let's see here. I said eyeliner.
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: You're really into this girl. Yeah, I do.
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: And radio silence, I guess, is the film group that,
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: you know, this these directors go by. And but yeah,
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: I was going like, man, this is like ready or
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: not meets, you know, Megan. But really, really freaking cool.
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: Let's see here. Oh, yeah. Say 11 minutes in. So far,
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: so good. And then I wrote, this is really good.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: And then I said, 30 minutes in. Creaky old house.
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: I love that. Oh, this is a big deal. When
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: somebody is getting murdered in a room, other people in
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: the house can hear it. And that drives me crazy
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: in horror movies. Where somebody can be two rooms down
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: and screaming and knocking stuff off books and everything. And
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: the people are in the living room. It's like the
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: ending of scream, you know, in that house, nobody hears
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: anything in the next room. I mean, it's just kind
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: of crazy, but, um, what is it? Oh yeah. It's
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: got a good kind of like, you know, trapped atmosphere
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: kind of like, uh, ready or not. And, uh, it's
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: got a cool, like a timer kind of like escape
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: from New York. You know, they've got to like hold
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: it together for X amount of hours before, uh, you know, help,
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: help is going to come. Uh, the dance scene is amazing. Vampire.
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: Slow giving out the info. That was good. Evil Dead
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: sense of humor. There's not only one vampire in the movie.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: How that happens is great. You're just going to love that.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: They're all very, very aware that they're in a movie
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: about vampires. It's kind of got a Fright Night kind
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: of atmosphere to it.
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: Too nice that's always a go-to for me yeah.
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: Yeah it's kind of got that there's there's moments that
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: are reminiscent of fright night where they're going like i
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: can't believe we're in a vampire movie you know kind
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: of thing you know um kind of like from dusk
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: till dawn too you know so it's it would be
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: a good from dusk till dawn fright night uh abigail
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: triple feature kind of thing you know nice and uh
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: let's like jot down here In the dark. Let's see.
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: Great at making the heroine sympathetic. Great glances? Don't know.
- 1:38:28Speaker 6: Game over.
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: Bruce Campbell vibe. And then I wrote green eggs and ham.
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: So I guess we're back to square one.
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: It's all come full circle.
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. So I would say I wish I did
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: see Abigail in the theater. I think it's a really
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: good you know, I mean, it's got the same ready
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: or not vibe to it. I think I like this lady,
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: you know, better than, uh, I know it was, uh,
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: what is it? Samira weaving. I like this character better.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: You know, I'm not going to say I like the
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: actress better, but I think I like the character better
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: in those, you know, I mean, they're both cool, whatever.
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: It's got the same vibe and it's just, it just
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: comes together and it's, uh, got a really good sense
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: of humor about it. You know, it's got that same,
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: you know, ready or not kind of vibe scream remake, uh,
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: vibe to it. So I can't, I would just say like, yeah,
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: definitely watch it. I enjoy the hell out of it.
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: This is good. I need to, and I'm looking it
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: up now and I'm like, ah, another streaming service I
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: don't have. Damn you people. Stop making it hard to
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: watch things.
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: For real, dude.
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: For real.
- 1:39:37Speaker 4: Oh man.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. So I was shocked. I just thought it
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: was going to be some throwaway horror movie that I
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: wasn't ever going to think about again or barely get through.
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: But it was a real winner, man. And so far
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: it's movie of the year.
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: Again sometimes you can assume they set the bar low
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: for those sort of things but you know totally i
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: feel like there's been a few good ones yeah yeah.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: I think so man i think so dude all right
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: all right well.
- 1:40:04Speaker 11: I can round us out with a teaser here okay
- 1:40:07Speaker 11: because once again as a tie-in to several things we've
- 1:40:11Speaker 11: mentioned and the fact that I'm still buying physical media.
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: The other day in a real store, I went in
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: the world, I picked it up with my hands, but
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: I saw it and I was like, what the hell
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: is this? Are you familiar with Nosferatu in Venice?
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: No. What the hell?
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: Well, I only picked it up because I went, oh God,
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: is that Klaus Kinski? Oh no. So, according to the
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: back of this, It was intended to be an unofficial
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: sequel to Herzog's Nosferatu. And instead became, put into this,
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: one of the most notoriously fascinating productions of Euro cult history.
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: What?
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: And like, even on the box here, it says, Kloskinski,
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: and now the quote is, now fully in the grip
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: of his batship crazy phase of his career. I'm like,
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: damn it, I'm going to have to get this, even
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: though that guy's a piece of shit. I keep watching
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: movies that he's in because he's so insane.
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: But then the other, like, going down further, I just
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: kind of scan him, like, wait, Donald Pleasance? We're like,
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: this is real actors in it. So, yeah, this is
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: an odd... later version of revisiting this uh nosferatu character
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: with the same piece.
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: Of shit yeah was it good.
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: I haven't seen it yet i just got it like
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: i just ran across it like yesterday so that was
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: why i was like it's a teaser so i can
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: watch this and yeah either we can work it into
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: a horror episode somewhere down the line officially or we
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: can just come back and you and i can talk
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: about it whichever you or if anyone out there cared
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: prefers but.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah yeah No, that sounds good.
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: There's a weird teaser of more Klaus Kinski is a
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: horrible human being that keeps making movies.
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: Right, that we end up watching. It just happens. It
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: just happens, guys. He's got screen presence. I don't know.
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: He's terrible.
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: He definitely has something.
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: I don't know what it is.
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: But I thought that was a nice teaser for the future.
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: Somewhere down the line, I can talk about that. Whoever
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: wants to join me on that, probably Nightmare Jacks.
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: Sure, dude.
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's cool. That gives me something to research and
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: everything about the stuff.
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: Excellent. Brian, man, this was crazy, dude.
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: It always is when we have one of these get-togethers.
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: I thought, I was going like, man, I was so
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: tired this week and everything. I was going like, this
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: is probably going to be a 35-minute episode.
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: I don't think you and I could do a 35-minute episode.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: Pretty sure, if you bet us money, we couldn't do it.
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: Yeah, for real, dude. I was not expecting to go
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: through a green eggs and ham nervous breakdown at the beginning.
- 1:43:06Speaker 2: Well, you know, once again, that's the world that both
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: you and I existed.
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: Pretty much.
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: And we watch movies, too. So, you know, that's how
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: it comes together.
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: Absolutely. Well, thank you for coming.
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: Along on this journey. And it's always fun. So I
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: want to, like I said, in the past, I want
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: to keep this going as long as you're willing.
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: Sure.
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: And anybody else who wants to come along, that's up
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: to you guys. But the two of us have fun.
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: So that's what's good.
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: Absolutely. Absolutely, guys. So, yeah, I think this is one
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: for the books and everything. I think it was the best.
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: episode we've done so.
- 1:43:43Speaker 9: Who knew who every episode is the best episode we've
- 1:43:46Speaker 9: ever done i think so it just gets better and
- 1:43:49Speaker 9: better excellent excellent well yeah well thanks for uh inviting
- 1:43:53Speaker 9: me on man and everything i'll let you go.
