- 0:03Speaker 2: He is a film critic and he's also a reporter
- 0:08Speaker 2: and editor at the Salt Lake Tribune. You can see
- 0:11Speaker 2: his stuff at sltrib dot com his reviews at movie
- 0:14Speaker 2: cricket dot net. And Sean, are you going to talk
- 0:17Speaker 2: about fast cars in Harriman at all?
- 0:19Speaker 3: If they if they go to Harriman, Yes, if they
- 0:22Speaker 3: go to when when they have the Harriman Grand Prix?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Okay, all right, what movies are we talking? I don't know.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Here's the list I gave you the last.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, so we're just going to talk about F one
- 0:32Speaker 2: and Megan and Meghan three, Megan two point oh, Reagan.
- 0:35Speaker 3: You want to we will to start with MTh Reagan,
- 0:39Speaker 3: Megan two point zero. This is the sequel to the
- 0:41Speaker 3: twenty twenty three movie about the killer Robot in the
- 0:44Speaker 3: form of a ten year old girl.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I didn't see it. Apparently it was pretty good.
- 0:49Speaker 3: It was okay, it was it was fun, it was
- 0:51Speaker 3: fun ridiculous mayhem so so she was destroyed in the
- 0:55Speaker 3: last movie, Bye Bye, by her creator, Gemma played by
- 0:58Speaker 3: Alison Williams.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Or was she?
- 1:02Speaker 3: Of course she wasn't We wouldn't have a movie. Meghan
- 1:06Speaker 3: has been hiding in the in the software of Gemma's
- 1:08Speaker 3: smart home technology, waiting to reveal herself. This happens when
- 1:12Speaker 3: the Feds come in saying that there's an even deadlier
- 1:14Speaker 3: robot out there named Amelia, and I there's there's a
- 1:18Speaker 3: there's an acronym, but I don't care and neither do
- 1:21Speaker 3: you Autonomous militaries whatever something like that. Uh, the Feds
- 1:28Speaker 3: think Gemma is controlling Amelia because it's based on the
- 1:32Speaker 3: same designs. It's it's based on Meghan's original designs. So
- 1:36Speaker 3: now Meghan's so this is now Meghan's chance to come back,
- 1:39Speaker 3: get some redemption and fight the.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Other killer robot.
- 1:42Speaker 3: And you know if armed Schwarzenegger could do it, a
- 1:44Speaker 3: terminat or too sure, why not. Yeah, it's like many
- 1:47Speaker 3: of the original players are back here and a Alison Williams,
- 1:50Speaker 3: like we said, Violet McGraw as Gemma's niece Katie, who's
- 1:54Speaker 3: the person Megan has sworn to protect at all costs.
- 1:57Speaker 4: And Meghan the same people who did.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Meghan the the the body actor who is only fifteen,
- 2:02Speaker 3: and Amy Donald and Jena Davis is the voice actor.
- 2:06Speaker 4: They're back so.
- 2:07Speaker 1: So it's so it's too too takes two people yep,
- 2:10Speaker 1: to be.
- 2:11Speaker 3: One to be yes, you need you need the robot voice,
- 2:14Speaker 3: and then you need the and then is there and
- 2:16Speaker 3: then is there?
- 2:16Speaker 1: Is cg in some way too.
- 2:18Speaker 3: There's some puppetry involved, but mostly mostly it's practical effects.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Though, yeah, it looks pretty good.
- 2:24Speaker 3: So the director Geryld Johnstone, he's recycling the best bits
- 2:27Speaker 3: of the first movie, which can be fun for a while,
- 2:29Speaker 3: but it gets kind of repetitive. So this isn't as
- 2:32Speaker 3: good as the first one. Two and a half for
- 2:35Speaker 3: Megan two point zero, all.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Right, Now, this movie is supposed to be the just
- 2:39Speaker 2: the biggest, the best, the loudest, the greatest of all time.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah, F one F one or the assay f one
- 2:45Speaker 3: the movie to to to to.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I don't know why you thought it was something else.
- 2:51Speaker 3: It's been a lot of while you know, we good
- 2:54Speaker 3: good racing movies, are you know, there's some great ones.
- 2:57Speaker 3: The Days of Thunder in the nineties, Grand Prix in
- 3:00Speaker 3: the sixties, Ford versus Ferrari just a couple of years ago.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Was it the Steve McQueen one? Was that Graham Grand Prix,
- 3:06Speaker 2: Grand Prix or no a Lamans Lamon's was the That
- 3:09Speaker 2: was a good one because Grand Prix was Paul Newman.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yeah, these these actors who take up racing as a
- 3:15Speaker 3: as a side hobby.
- 3:16Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:17Speaker 3: This one starts with Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, who
- 3:21Speaker 3: knows racing and will go anywhere and race anything to
- 3:23Speaker 3: get that adrenaline rush. And he's and he's definitely old
- 3:26Speaker 3: enough of that the name Sonny does not really fit anymore.
- 3:29Speaker 3: We are told that he did Formula one some thirty
- 3:31Speaker 3: years earlier, but he had a bad crash that knocked
- 3:33Speaker 3: him out of it. So one of his driver buddies
- 3:37Speaker 3: from back then, Reuben played by Hobby ar Bardem, he
- 3:39Speaker 3: now owns a Formula one racing team and he needs help.
- 3:42Speaker 3: The team's in dead last in the standings and if
- 3:45Speaker 3: they don't win a race this season, the folks who
- 3:46Speaker 3: run Formula one are going to make him sell the
- 3:48Speaker 3: racing team. So millions and millions of dollars are on
- 3:51Speaker 3: the line here and and you you can feel them.
- 3:53Speaker 4: You can feel the.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Millions of dollars because every flat surface in this movie
- 3:58Speaker 3: and has has some but he's logo on it.
- 4:01Speaker 2: So if you're so if you're if you need help
- 4:05Speaker 2: to save your racing game, you naturally you turn to
- 4:08Speaker 2: a washed up yep, yep has.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Been yes, because this is the movies. Yeah, okay, So
- 4:15Speaker 4: so Reuben.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Wants Sonny to come drive for and be the number
- 4:18Speaker 3: two driver behind his lead driver. Who's this hot headed
- 4:21Speaker 3: kid Joshua Pierce played by Dempson Idris. Who's Who's a
- 4:25Speaker 3: cool young actor. He's good, He's arrogant, just like Sonny
- 4:28Speaker 3: was thirty years ago. Of course, you know where this
- 4:31Speaker 3: is going. The drivers are going to argue, then start
- 4:34Speaker 3: to respect each other, They lose races, they get better,
- 4:37Speaker 3: and the question, you know, can they become a team
- 4:39Speaker 3: and and of course of.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Course they can't.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Well and also, you know, to throw a little more
- 4:43Speaker 3: into the mix, the team's technical director, the person who
- 4:46Speaker 3: designs the cars, is the first woman ever to have
- 4:49Speaker 3: that job with a Formula One team, and they fall
- 4:52Speaker 3: in love, played by Kerry Condon and you can kind
- 4:55Speaker 3: of guess what happens with her and Brad Pitt.
- 4:57Speaker 4: The director here is Joseph Kaczinski. He top gun Maverick.
- 5:02Speaker 3: So you can do action, you do fast, cargo fast
- 5:04Speaker 3: from room you know, that's that's what you need for
- 5:07Speaker 3: this movie.
- 5:07Speaker 5: Do you so, so just talk speak to that for
- 5:10Speaker 5: just a minute.
- 5:10Speaker 6: Do you feel like you're in the car, like this
- 5:12Speaker 6: is what it feels like to be in an F
- 5:13Speaker 6: one car.
- 5:14Speaker 3: There's a lot there's a lot of scenes racing scenes
- 5:17Speaker 3: where yeah, you feel like the car, the cameras in
- 5:19Speaker 3: there with with the car, with the driver, and sometimes
- 5:22Speaker 3: that is pit and and Idris they are they actually drove,
- 5:26Speaker 3: they actually did the driving, uh for for some scenes
- 5:29Speaker 3: uh that they feel very real. A lot of big
- 5:33Speaker 3: action here and they get the camera, Like I said,
- 5:35Speaker 3: get the cameras right there.
- 5:36Speaker 4: You feel every moment of it.
- 5:38Speaker 3: And if you're gonna go see this movie and there
- 5:40Speaker 3: some of you definitely are IMAX is the way to go.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Here.
- 5:44Speaker 3: You're gonna get get the full sensory experience, you know,
- 5:47Speaker 3: glue you know, push you to the back of your
- 5:50Speaker 3: seat kind of thing. Uh, you want that the full
- 5:53Speaker 3: sort of the full visual and sonic effect. The downside
- 5:58Speaker 3: here is that it is a sports movie, and every
- 6:00Speaker 3: sports movie cliche, trope, whatever is in here that you
- 6:03Speaker 3: can think of.
- 6:06Speaker 4: And it is like a racecourse.
- 6:07Speaker 3: You know where the turns are, you know, where the
- 6:09Speaker 3: finish line is, and it's just a matter of how
- 6:10Speaker 3: well they complete the course.
- 6:12Speaker 4: And here they do it pretty well. Okay, So three
- 6:15Speaker 4: stars for F one.
- 6:17Speaker 3: And like I said, it is playing everywhere. But yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 3: go see it in imax if you if you really
- 6:21Speaker 3: want to go see it.
- 6:22Speaker 1: So you gave it three stars, not because it's a
- 6:26Speaker 1: good story.
- 6:29Speaker 4: There's nothing wrong with the story. It's just a story,
- 6:31Speaker 4: you know.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Every Here's the thing sports movies, at one point or another,
- 6:36Speaker 3: no matter how serious they are about the atmosphere, about
- 6:40Speaker 3: the feel of you know, making it feel like the
- 6:41Speaker 3: real thing whatever, at some point or another, every sports
- 6:45Speaker 3: movie is going to become the Mighty Ducks.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, yeah, Okay, it's or it's not Jimmy Stewart.
- 6:52Speaker 2: It's a I forget the actor who says tell me
- 6:55Speaker 2: the truth though, because it's strike three, you know.
- 6:59Speaker 4: That kind of thing.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Yeah, And there's even that, there's the there's there's even
- 7:03Speaker 3: a you know, you're you shouldn't be racing to begin
- 7:06Speaker 3: with kind of thing.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Yeah, even is there a death on the track. I'm
- 7:10Speaker 4: not going to give stuff away.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Okay, I mean there's rarely a death in Formula one
- 7:17Speaker 2: racing anymore.
- 7:18Speaker 6: But yeah, that's why one of the reasons I think
- 7:22Speaker 6: Rocky was so popular because he doesn't win at the end,
- 7:26Speaker 6: like he.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Gets the girl.
- 7:28Speaker 6: But I mean, like the sports movie, you know, the
- 7:31Speaker 6: guy you want to win usually.
- 7:32Speaker 5: Wins, and that's that's I think. I do think that's
- 7:34Speaker 5: one of the reasons that was Yeah.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Well, I mean he triumphed yea, even though he didn't
- 7:40Speaker 3: necessarily you know, the outcome of the but like you.
- 7:43Speaker 6: Would think in that sports trope and then you win,
- 7:46Speaker 6: you know, he's not supposed to win any win.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Then they had to make five more movies.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Well, I don't you know.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I was sort of excited about seeing it until I
- 7:57Speaker 2: heard what the story was like, and then I thought, well.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Well, go for the go for the excitement, go for
- 8:02Speaker 3: the visual rush. All right, that's what you go for.
- 8:04Speaker 4: All right.
- 8:05Speaker 1: What are we on next week?
- 8:06Speaker 3: Not a lot going on, scept there's one big movie
- 8:09Speaker 3: for the fourth of July weekend, Jurassic World Rebirth.
- 8:13Speaker 4: So Katie gets her dinosaurs.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Yep, I'm all for it, and Scarlett Johansson and meherschelaw
- 8:19Speaker 3: Ali are in it.
- 8:20Speaker 1: But there's dinosaurs and swimming spinosaurs swimming Sinusus.
- 8:24Speaker 4: I am ecstatic.
- 8:25Speaker 2: So I went to see twenty eight years later. I
- 8:28Speaker 2: thought it was quite good. Oh yes, and yet somebody
- 8:31Speaker 2: I won't say who here in our officer I saw
- 8:33Speaker 2: that movie.
- 8:34Speaker 1: What'd you think of it? I said, I loved it.
- 8:35Speaker 1: He's really I hated it.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Yeah, they're wrong.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I just I know.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Well Bill told him he was wrong.
- 8:40Speaker 2: I said, well, you're wrong. But the more I think
- 8:43Speaker 2: about the movie, the more I like it. Yes, it
- 8:46Speaker 2: sticks with you, it does images and I and I
- 8:49Speaker 2: didn't realize that it had.
- 8:51Speaker 1: You may have mentioned it. And it was filmed with iPhones.
- 8:56Speaker 4: I don't know about that. Yeah, that may be some parts.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Yes, actually all of.
- 9:00Speaker 2: It was filmed fifty different iPhones.
- 9:04Speaker 6: All right, Gina, I think we need a girl's day
- 9:06Speaker 6: on the afternoon and go see it next week.
- 9:07Speaker 5: Agree.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Yep, it's it's really quite something.
- 9:10Speaker 6: I'm dying.
- 9:11Speaker 4: But you keep your iPhones put in your pocket.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Yes, And I didn't realize that island that they live on.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Uh huh, that's a real thing. Okay, it's with the
- 9:19Speaker 2: tide and all of that. That's that's a real place.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Oh okay, it seems like it was made up for
- 9:25Speaker 2: the movie.
- 9:25Speaker 4: But you do know the zombies aren't real, right?
- 9:27Speaker 1: I do know that, Yes, at least I hope they're not.
- 9:30Speaker 5: And somebody's mad at me for spoiling Rocky one.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Well, I think I think it's a little over the time.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Next year is fifty years. I think you've had your chance.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Yeah all right.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Shaw means you can read his stuff movie cricket dot net,
