Speaker 1: Chapter twelve, a cave retreat. While this was doing, I
• 0:07
Speaker 1: was not altogether careless of my other affairs, for I
• 0:11
Speaker 1: had a great concern upon me for my little herd
• 0:14
Speaker 1: of goats. They were not only already supply to me
• 0:19
Speaker 1: on every occasion, and began to be sufficient for me
• 0:23
Speaker 1: without the expense of powder and shot, but also without
• 0:27
Speaker 1: the fatigue of hunting after the wild ones. And I
• 0:31
Speaker 1: was loath to lose the advantage of them, and to
• 0:34
Speaker 1: have them all to nurse up over again. For this purpose,
• 0:38
Speaker 1: After long consideration, I could think of but two ways
• 0:42
Speaker 1: to preserve them. One was to find another convenient place
• 0:47
Speaker 1: to dig a cave underground, and to drive them into
• 0:51
Speaker 1: it every night. And the other was to enclose two
• 0:55
Speaker 1: or three little bits of land, remote from one another,
• 0:59
Speaker 1: and as much conceived as I could, where I might
• 1:02
Speaker 1: keep about a half dozen young goats in each place,
• 1:06
Speaker 1: so that if any disaster happened to the flock in general,
• 1:10
Speaker 1: I might be able to raise them again with little
• 1:12
Speaker 1: trouble and time. And this, though it would require a
• 1:17
Speaker 1: good deal of time in labor, I thought was the
• 1:20
Speaker 1: most rational design. Accordingly, I spent some time to find
• 1:25
Speaker 1: out the most retired parts of the island, and I
• 1:28
Speaker 1: pitched upon one which was as private, indeed as my
• 1:32
Speaker 1: heart could wish. It was a little damp piece of
• 1:36
Speaker 1: ground in the middle of the hollow and thick woods,
• 1:39
Speaker 1: where as is observed, I almost lost myself once before
• 1:45
Speaker 1: endeavoring to come back that way from the eastern part
• 1:48
Speaker 1: of the island. Here I found a clear piece of
• 1:51
Speaker 1: land near three acres, so surrounded with woods that it
• 1:56
Speaker 1: was almost an enclosure by nature. At least it did
• 2:00
Speaker 1: not want near so much labor to make it so
• 2:02
Speaker 1: as the other piece of ground I had worked so
• 2:05
Speaker 1: hard at. I immediately went to work with this piece
• 2:10
Speaker 1: of ground, and in less than a month's time I
• 2:13
Speaker 1: had so fenced it round that my flock or herd
• 2:17
Speaker 1: call it what she please, which were not so wild
• 2:20
Speaker 1: now as at first they might be supposed to be,
• 2:23
Speaker 1: were well enough secured in it. So without any further
• 2:28
Speaker 1: delay I removed ten young she goats and two he
• 2:31
Speaker 1: goats to this piece, and when they were there, I
• 2:35
Speaker 1: continued to perfect the fence till I had made it
• 2:38
Speaker 1: as secure as the other, which, however, I did at
• 2:42
Speaker 1: more leisure, and it took me up more time by
• 2:45
Speaker 1: a great deal all this labor I was at the
• 2:49
Speaker 1: expense of, purely from my apprehensions, on account of the
• 2:52
Speaker 1: print of a man's foot, For as yet I had
• 2:56
Speaker 1: never seen any human creature come near the island, and
• 3:00
Speaker 1: I had now lived two years under this uneasiness, which
• 3:04
Speaker 1: indeed made my life much less comfortable than it was before,
• 3:08
Speaker 1: as may well be imagined by any who know what
• 3:12
Speaker 1: it is to live in the constant snare of the
• 3:14
Speaker 1: fear of man. And this I must observe with grief too,
• 3:21
Speaker 1: that the discomposure of my mind had great impression also
• 3:25
Speaker 1: upon the religious part of my thoughts. For the dread
• 3:29
Speaker 1: and terror of falling into the hands of savages and
• 3:32
Speaker 1: cannibals lay so upon my spirits that I seldom found
• 3:36
Speaker 1: myself in a due temper for application to my maker,
• 3:41
Speaker 1: at least not with the sedate calmness and resignation of soul,
• 3:45
Speaker 1: which I was wont to do. I rather prayed to
• 3:49
Speaker 1: God as under great affliction and pressure of mind, surrounded
• 3:53
Speaker 1: with danger, and in expectation every night of being murdered
• 3:58
Speaker 1: and devoured before morning. And I must testify from my
• 4:02
Speaker 1: experience that a temper of peace, thankfulness, love, and affection
• 4:10
Speaker 1: is much more the proper frame for prayer than that
• 4:14
Speaker 1: of terror and discomposure, and that under the dread of
• 4:18
Speaker 1: mischief impending a man is no more fit for a
• 4:22
Speaker 1: comforting performance of the duty of praying to God than
• 4:26
Speaker 1: he is for a repentance on a sick bed. For
• 4:30
Speaker 1: these discomposures affect the mind as the others do the body,
• 4:35
Speaker 1: and the discomposure of the mind must necessarily be as
• 4:40
Speaker 1: great a disability as that of the body, and much greater,
• 4:45
Speaker 1: praying to God being properly an act of the mind,
• 4:49
Speaker 1: not of the body. But to go on. After I
• 4:54
Speaker 1: had thus secured one part of my little living stock,
• 4:58
Speaker 1: I went about the whole island, searching for another private
• 5:02
Speaker 1: place to make such another deposit. When wandering more to
• 5:07
Speaker 1: the west point of the island than I had ever
• 5:10
Speaker 1: done yet, and looking out to the sea, I thought
• 5:14
Speaker 1: I saw a boat upon the sea. At a great distance.
• 5:18
Speaker 1: I had found a perspective glass or two in one
• 5:22
Speaker 1: of the seamen's chests, which I saved out of our ship.
• 5:26
Speaker 1: But I had it not about me, and this was
• 5:30
Speaker 1: so remote that I could not tell what to make
• 5:33
Speaker 1: of it, though I looked at it till my eyes
• 5:36
Speaker 1: were not able to hold to look any longer. Whether
• 5:39
Speaker 1: it was a boat or not, I do not know.
• 5:43
Speaker 1: But as I descended from the hill, I could see
• 5:46
Speaker 1: no more of it, so I gave it over only
• 5:51
Speaker 1: I resolved to go no more out without a prospective
• 5:55
Speaker 1: glass in my pocket. When I was come down the
• 5:59
Speaker 1: hill to the end of the island, where indeed I
• 6:02
Speaker 1: had never been before, I was presently convinced that the
• 6:06
Speaker 1: scene the print of a man's foot, was not such
• 6:09
Speaker 1: a strange thing in the island as I imagined, but
• 6:13
Speaker 1: that it was a special providence that I was cast
• 6:16
Speaker 1: upon the side of the island where the savages never came.
• 6:19
Speaker 1: I should easily have known that nothing was more frequent
• 6:24
Speaker 1: than for the canoes from the main when they happened
• 6:27
Speaker 1: to be a little too far out at sea to
• 6:29
Speaker 1: shoot over to that side of the island for harbor.
• 6:33
Speaker 1: And likewise, as they often met and fought in their canoes,
• 6:37
Speaker 1: the victors, having taken away prisoners, would bring them over
• 6:42
Speaker 1: to this shore, where, according to their dreadful customs, being
• 6:46
Speaker 1: all cannibals, they would kill and eat them, end of
• 6:50
Speaker 1: which hereafter, when I was come down the hill to
• 6:55
Speaker 1: the shore, as I said above, being the southwest point
• 6:59
Speaker 1: of the island, I was perfectly confounded and amazed. Nor
• 7:04
Speaker 1: is it possible for me to express the horror of
• 7:08
Speaker 1: my mind at seeing the shore spread with skulls, hands, feet,
• 7:13
Speaker 1: and other bones of human bodies. And particularly I observed
• 7:19
Speaker 1: a place where there had been a fire made, and
• 7:22
Speaker 1: a circle dug in the earth like a cockpit, where
• 7:26
Speaker 1: I supposed the savage wretches had sat down to their
• 7:29
Speaker 1: human feastings upon the bodies of their fellow creatures. I
• 7:35
Speaker 1: was so astonished with the sight of these things that
• 7:37
Speaker 1: I entertained no notions of any danger to myself from it.
• 7:42
Speaker 1: For a long while, all my apprehensions were buried in
• 7:47
Speaker 1: the thoughts of such a pitch of inhuman hellish brutality,
• 7:52
Speaker 1: and the horror of the degeneracy of human nature, which
• 7:57
Speaker 1: though I had heard of it often, yet I never
• 8:00
Speaker 1: had so near a view of before. In short, I
• 8:04
Speaker 1: turned away my face from the horrid spectacle. My stomach
• 8:08
Speaker 1: grew sick, and I was just at the point of
• 8:12
Speaker 1: fainting when Nature discharged the disorder from my stomach, and
• 8:18
Speaker 1: having vomited with uncommon violence, I was a little relieved,
• 8:23
Speaker 1: but could not bear to stay in the place a moment.
• 8:26
Speaker 1: So I got up the hill again with all the
• 8:30
Speaker 1: speed I could, and walked on towards my own habitation.
• 8:36
Speaker 1: When I came a little out of that part of
• 8:39
Speaker 1: the island, I stood still, awhile, amazed, and then recovering myself,
• 8:46
Speaker 1: I looked up with the utmost affection of my soul,
• 8:49
Speaker 1: and with a flood of tears in my eyes, gave
• 8:53
Speaker 1: God thanks that had cast my first lot in a
• 8:57
Speaker 1: part of the world where I was distinguished from such
• 9:01
Speaker 1: dreadful creatures as these, And that though I had esteemed
• 9:05
Speaker 1: my present condition very miserable, had yet given me so
• 9:10
Speaker 1: many comforts in it, that I had still more to
• 9:13
Speaker 1: give thanks for than to complain of. And this above all,
• 9:18
Speaker 1: that I had, even in this miserable condition, been comforted
• 9:22
Speaker 1: with the knowledge of Himself and the hope of His blessing,
• 9:28
Speaker 1: which was a felicity more than sufficiently equivalent to all
• 9:32
Speaker 1: the misery which I had suffered or could suffer. In
• 9:38
Speaker 1: this frame of thankfulness, I went home to my castle
• 9:41
Speaker 1: and began to be much easier now as to the
• 9:44
Speaker 1: safety of my circumstances than ever I was before. For
• 9:49
Speaker 1: I had observed that these wretches never came to this
• 9:53
Speaker 1: island in search of what they could get, perhaps not seeking,
• 9:57
Speaker 1: not wanting, or not expecting anything here, and having often
• 10:02
Speaker 1: no doubt been up the covered witty part of it
• 10:05
Speaker 1: without finding anything to their purpose. I knew I had
• 10:09
Speaker 1: been here now almost eighteen years, and never saw the
• 10:13
Speaker 1: least footsteps of human creature there before. And I might
• 10:18
Speaker 1: be eighteen years more as entirely concealed as I was
• 10:21
Speaker 1: now if I did not discover myself to them, which
• 10:25
Speaker 1: I had no manner of occasion to do, it being
• 10:29
Speaker 1: only my business to keep myself entirely concealed where I was,
• 10:35
Speaker 1: unless I found a better sort of creatures than cannibals
• 10:38
Speaker 1: to make myself known to. Yet I entertained such an
• 10:43
Speaker 1: abhorrence of the savage wretches that I had been speaking of,
• 10:47
Speaker 1: and of the wretched inhuman custom of their devouring and
• 10:51
Speaker 1: eating one another up, that I continued pensive and sad,
• 10:57
Speaker 1: and kept close within my own circle for all my
• 11:00
Speaker 1: almost two years after this. When I say my own circle,
• 11:03
Speaker 1: I mean by it my three plantations. That is my castle,
• 11:08
Speaker 1: my country seat, which I called my bower, and my
• 11:12
Speaker 1: enclosure in the woods. Nor did I look after this
• 11:15
Speaker 1: for any other use than an enclosure for my goats.
• 11:19
Speaker 1: For the aversion which nature gave me to these hellish
• 11:23
Speaker 1: wretches was such that I was as fearful of seeing
• 11:26
Speaker 1: them as of seeing the devil himself. I did not
• 11:31
Speaker 1: so much as go to look after my boat all
• 11:34
Speaker 1: this time, but began rather to think of making another,
• 11:38
Speaker 1: for I could not think of ever making any more
• 11:41
Speaker 1: attempts to bring the other boat round the island to me,
• 11:46
Speaker 1: lest I should meet with some of these creatures at sea,
• 11:49
Speaker 1: in which case, if I had happened to have fallen
• 11:52
Speaker 1: in their hands, I knew what would have been my lot. Time. However,
• 11:59
Speaker 1: and these satisfaction I had that I was in no
• 12:01
Speaker 1: danger of being discovered by these people began to wear
• 12:05
Speaker 1: off my uneasiness about them, and I began to live
• 12:09
Speaker 1: just the same composed manner as before, only with this
• 12:13
Speaker 1: difference that I used more caution and kept my eyes
• 12:18
Speaker 1: more about me than I did before, lest I should
• 12:21
Speaker 1: happen to be seen by any of them, And particularly
• 12:25
Speaker 1: I was more cautious of firing my gun lest any
• 12:29
Speaker 1: of them, being on the island, should happen to hear it.
• 12:33
Speaker 1: It was therefore a very good providence to me that
• 12:36
Speaker 1: I had furnished myself with a tame breed of goats,
• 12:39
Speaker 1: and that I had no need to hunt any more
• 12:42
Speaker 1: about the woods or shoot at them. And if I
• 12:45
Speaker 1: did catch any of them after this, it was by
• 12:48
Speaker 1: traps and snares, as I had done before, So that
• 12:52
Speaker 1: for two years after this, I believe I never fired
• 12:55
Speaker 1: my gun once off, though I never went out without it.
• 13:01
Speaker 1: And what was more, as I had saved three pistols
• 13:04
Speaker 1: out of the ship, I always carried them out with me,
• 13:08
Speaker 1: or at least two of them, sticking them in my
• 13:10
Speaker 1: goat skin belt. I also furbished up one of the
• 13:15
Speaker 1: great cutlasses that I had out of the ship, and
• 13:18
Speaker 1: made me a belt to hang it on, also so
• 13:22
Speaker 1: that I was now a most formidable fellow to look
• 13:25
Speaker 1: at when I went abroad. If you add to the
• 13:28
Speaker 1: former description of myself the particular of two pistols and
• 13:32
Speaker 1: a broadsword hanging at my side in a belt and
• 13:36
Speaker 1: without a scabbard. Things going on thus, as I have said,
• 13:42
Speaker 1: for some time I seemed, accepting these cautions to be
• 13:46
Speaker 1: reduced to my former calm, sedate way of living. All
• 13:51
Speaker 1: these things tended to show me more and more how
• 13:54
Speaker 1: far my condition was from being miserable compared to some others,
• 14:00
Speaker 1: to many other particulars of life, which it might have
• 14:03
Speaker 1: been pleasing to God to have made my lot. It
• 14:08
Speaker 1: put me upon reflecting how little repining there would be
• 14:12
Speaker 1: among mankind at any condition of life. If people would
• 14:16
Speaker 1: rather compare their condition with those that were worse in
• 14:21
Speaker 1: order to be thankful, then be always comparing them with
• 14:24
Speaker 1: those which are better to assist their murmurings and complainings.
• 14:30
Speaker 1: As in my present condition, there were not really many
• 14:33
Speaker 1: things which I wanted. So indeed, I thought that the
• 14:37
Speaker 1: frights I had been in about these wretched savages, and
• 14:42
Speaker 1: the concern I had been in for my own preservation,
• 14:46
Speaker 1: had taken off the edge of my invention for my
• 14:49
Speaker 1: own conveniences, and I had dropped a good design which
• 14:54
Speaker 1: I had once spent my thoughts upon, and that was
• 14:58
Speaker 1: to try if I could not make some of my
• 15:00
Speaker 1: barley into malt, and then try to brew myself some beer.
• 15:06
Speaker 1: This was really a whimsical thought, and I reproved myself
• 15:09
Speaker 1: often for the simplicity of it, For I presently saw
• 15:12
Speaker 1: that there would be the want of several things necessary
• 15:15
Speaker 1: to the making of my beer, that it would be
• 15:18
Speaker 1: impossible for me to supply as first task to preserve
• 15:23
Speaker 1: it in which was a thing that, as I have
• 15:26
Speaker 1: observed already, I could never compass. Now though I spent
• 15:31
Speaker 1: not only many days, but weeks, nay months, in attempting it,
• 15:36
Speaker 1: but to no purpose. In the next place, I had
• 15:39
Speaker 1: no hops to make it keep, no use to make
• 15:42
Speaker 1: it work, no copper or cattle to make it boil.
• 15:46
Speaker 1: And yet with all these things wanting, I verily believe
• 15:50
Speaker 1: had not the frights and terrors I was in about
• 15:53
Speaker 1: the savages intervened. I had undertaken it and perhaps brought
• 15:57
Speaker 1: it to pass. Two. For I sell gave anything over
• 16:01
Speaker 1: without accomplishing it, when once I had it in my
• 16:04
Speaker 1: head to begin it. But my invention now ran quite
• 16:10
Speaker 1: another way. For night and day I could think of
• 16:12
Speaker 1: nothing but how I might destroy some of the monsters
• 16:15
Speaker 1: in their cruel, bloody entertainment, and if possible, save the
• 16:20
Speaker 1: victim they should bring hither to destroy. It would take
• 16:26
Speaker 1: up a larger volume than this. Whole work is intended
• 16:28
Speaker 1: to be to set down all the contrivances I hatched,
• 16:33
Speaker 1: or rather brooded upon, in my thoughts for the destroying
• 16:37
Speaker 1: these creatures, or at least frightening them, so as to
• 16:41
Speaker 1: prevent their coming hither anymore. But all this was a bortive.
• 16:46
Speaker 1: Nothing could be possible to take effect unless I was
• 16:50
Speaker 1: to be there to do it myself. And what could
• 16:53
Speaker 1: one man do among them, when perhaps there might be
• 16:57
Speaker 1: twenty or thirty of them, together with their dark arts,
• 17:00
Speaker 1: or their bows and arrows, with which they could shoot
• 17:03
Speaker 1: as true to a mark as I could with my gun.
• 17:08
Speaker 1: Sometimes I thought if digging a hole unto the place
• 17:12
Speaker 1: where they made their fire, and putting in five or
• 17:15
Speaker 1: six pounds of gunpowder, which when they kindled their fire,
• 17:18
Speaker 1: would consequantly take fire and blow up all that was
• 17:22
Speaker 1: near it. But as in the first place, I should
• 17:25
Speaker 1: be unwilling to waste so much powder upon them, my
• 17:29
Speaker 1: store being now within the quantity of one barrel, so
• 17:33
Speaker 1: neither could I be sure of its going off at
• 17:36
Speaker 1: any certain time when it might surprise them, And at
• 17:40
Speaker 1: best that it would do little more than just blow
• 17:43
Speaker 1: the fire about their ears and fright them, but not
• 17:46
Speaker 1: sufficient to make them forsake the place. So I laid
• 17:51
Speaker 1: it aside, and then proposed that I would place myself
• 17:55
Speaker 1: in ambush in some convenient place, with my three guns,
• 17:59
Speaker 1: all double loaded, and in the middle of their bloody ceremony,
• 18:03
Speaker 1: let fly at them when I should be sure to
• 18:06
Speaker 1: kill or wound, perhaps two or three at every shot,
• 18:11
Speaker 1: and then falling in among them with my three pistols
• 18:16
Speaker 1: at my sword. I made no doubt but that if
• 18:20
Speaker 1: there were twenty, I should kill them all. This fancy
• 18:24
Speaker 1: pleased my thoughts for some weeks, and I was so
• 18:27
Speaker 1: full of it that I often dreamed of it, and
• 18:30
Speaker 1: sometimes that I was just going to let fly at
• 18:32
Speaker 1: them in my sleep. I went so far with it
• 18:37
Speaker 1: in my imagination that I employed myself several days to
• 18:42
Speaker 1: find out proper places to put myself in ambuscade, as
• 18:47
Speaker 1: I said, to watch for them. And I went frequently
• 18:50
Speaker 1: to that place itself, which was now grown more familiar
• 18:53
Speaker 1: to me. But while my mind was thus filled with
• 18:59
Speaker 1: thoughts of revenge and a bloody putting twenty or thirty
• 19:04
Speaker 1: of them to the sword, as I may call it,
• 19:07
Speaker 1: the horror I had at the place, and the signals
• 19:10
Speaker 1: of the barbarous wretches devouring one another, abetded my malice well.
• 19:18
Speaker 1: At length I found a place in the side of
• 19:20
Speaker 1: the hill, where I was satisfied, I might securely wait
• 19:24
Speaker 1: till I saw any of their boats coming, and might, then,
• 19:27
Speaker 1: even before they would be ready to come on shore,
• 19:30
Speaker 1: convey myself unseen into some thickets of trees, in one
• 19:35
Speaker 1: of which there was a hollow large enough to conceal
• 19:39
Speaker 1: me entirely, And there I might sit and observe all
• 19:43
Speaker 1: their bloody doings, and take my full aim at their
• 19:46
Speaker 1: heads when they were so close together as that it
• 19:49
Speaker 1: would be next to impossible that I should miss my shot,
• 19:54
Speaker 1: or that I would fail wounding three or four of
• 19:56
Speaker 1: them at the first shot. In this place I resolved
• 20:01
Speaker 1: to fulfill my design, and accordingly I prepared two muskets
• 20:06
Speaker 1: and my ordinary filing piece. The two muskets I loaded
• 20:11
Speaker 1: with a brace of slugs each and four or five
• 20:14
Speaker 1: smaller bullets about the size of pistol bullets, and the
• 20:19
Speaker 1: foling piece I loaded with near a handful of swanshot
• 20:23
Speaker 1: of the largest size. I also loaded my pistols with
• 20:26
Speaker 1: about four bullets each, and in this posture well provided
• 20:31
Speaker 1: with ammunition for a second and third charge, I prepared
• 20:35
Speaker 1: myself for my expedition. After I had thus laid the
• 20:40
Speaker 1: scheme of my design, and in my imagination put it
• 20:44
Speaker 1: in practice. I continually made my tour every morning to
• 20:48
Speaker 1: the top of the hill, which was from my castle,
• 20:51
Speaker 1: as I called it, about three miles or more, to
• 20:54
Speaker 1: see if I could observe any boats upon the sea,
• 20:58
Speaker 1: coming near the island, or standing over towards it. But
• 21:02
Speaker 1: I began to tire of this hard duty after I
• 21:05
Speaker 1: had for two or three months constantly kept my watch,
• 21:09
Speaker 1: but came always back without any discovery, there having not
• 21:14
Speaker 1: in all that time been the least appearance, not only
• 21:18
Speaker 1: on or near the shore, but on the whole ocean,
• 21:21
Speaker 1: so far as my eye or glass could reach every way.
• 21:26
Speaker 1: As long as I kept my daily tour to the
• 21:28
Speaker 1: hill to look out, so long also I kept up
• 21:32
Speaker 1: the vigor of my design, and my spirit seemed to
• 21:35
Speaker 1: be all the while in a suitable frame for so
• 21:38
Speaker 1: outrageous an execution as the killing twenty or thirty naked savages,
• 21:43
Speaker 1: for an offense which I had not at all entered
• 21:46
Speaker 1: into any discussion of in my thoughts any farther than
• 21:50
Speaker 1: my passions were at first fired by the horror I
• 21:54
Speaker 1: conceived at the unnatural custom of the people of that country, who,
• 21:58
Speaker 1: it seems, had been suffered by Providence in his wise
• 22:02
Speaker 1: disposition of the world, to have no other guide than
• 22:06
Speaker 1: that of their own abominable and vitiated passions, and consequently
• 22:12
Speaker 1: were left, and perhaps had been so for some ages
• 22:16
Speaker 1: to act such horrid things and receive such horrid customs,
• 22:21
Speaker 1: as nothing but nature entirely abandoned by Heaven and actuated
• 22:26
Speaker 1: by some hellish degeneracy, could have run them into. But now,
• 22:32
Speaker 1: when as I have said, I began to be weary
• 22:35
Speaker 1: of the fruitless excursion which I had made so long,
• 22:38
Speaker 1: and so far every morning in vain, so my opinion
• 22:43
Speaker 1: of the action itself began to alter, and I began,
• 22:47
Speaker 1: with cooler and calmer thoughts to consider what I was
• 22:52
Speaker 1: going to engage in. What authority or call I had
• 22:56
Speaker 1: to pretend to be judge and executioner upon these men
• 23:01
Speaker 1: as criminals whom Heaven had thought fit for so many
• 23:05
Speaker 1: ages to suffer unpunished, to go on and to be,
• 23:08
Speaker 1: as it were, the executioners of his judgments upon another.
• 23:14
Speaker 1: How far these people were offenders against me? And what
• 23:18
Speaker 1: right I had to engage in the quarrel of that
• 23:21
Speaker 1: blood which they shed promiscuously upon one another. I debated
• 23:27
Speaker 1: this very often with myself. Thus, how do I know
• 23:32
Speaker 1: what God himself judges in this particular case. It is
• 23:36
Speaker 1: certain these people do not commit this as a crime.
• 23:40
Speaker 1: It is not against their own consciences reproving or their
• 23:45
Speaker 1: light reproaching them. They do not know it to be
• 23:49
Speaker 1: in offense, and then commit it in defiance of divine justice,
• 23:55
Speaker 1: as we do in almost all the sins we commit.
• 23:58
Speaker 1: They think it no more a crime to kill a
• 24:01
Speaker 1: captive taken in war than we do to kill an ox,
• 24:05
Speaker 1: or to eat human flesh than we do to eat mutton.
• 24:11
Speaker 1: When I considered this a little, it followed necessarily that
• 24:15
Speaker 1: I was certainly in the wrong. That these people were
• 24:17
Speaker 1: not murderers in the sense that I had before condemned
• 24:21
Speaker 1: them in my thoughts, anymore than those Christians were murderers
• 24:26
Speaker 1: who often put to death the prisoners taken in battle,
• 24:29
Speaker 1: or more frequently, upon many occasions, put whole troops of
• 24:34
Speaker 1: men to the sword without giving quarter. Though they threw
• 24:38
Speaker 1: down their arms and submitted. In the next place, it
• 24:42
Speaker 1: occurred to me that although the usage they gave one
• 24:45
Speaker 1: another was thus brutish and inhuman, yet it was really
• 24:49
Speaker 1: nothing to me. These people had done me no injury.
• 24:53
Speaker 1: That if they attempted, or I saw it necessary for
• 24:57
Speaker 1: my immediate preservation to fall upon them, something might be
• 25:01
Speaker 1: said for it, but that I was yet out of
• 25:04
Speaker 1: their power, and they really had no knowledge of me,
• 25:08
Speaker 1: and consequently no design upon me, and therefore it could
• 25:13
Speaker 1: not be just for me to fall upon them. That
• 25:17
Speaker 1: this would justify the conduct of the Spaniards and all
• 25:20
Speaker 1: their barbarities practiced in America, where they destroyed millions of
• 25:26
Speaker 1: these people, who, however, they were idolaters and barbarians, and
• 25:30
Speaker 1: had several bloody and barbarous rights in their customs, such
• 25:35
Speaker 1: as sacrificing human bodies to their idols, were yet, as
• 25:39
Speaker 1: to the Spaniards, very innocent people, and that the rooting
• 25:45
Speaker 1: of them out of the country is spoken of with
• 25:48
Speaker 1: the utmost abhorrence and detestation by even the Spaniards themselves
• 25:54
Speaker 1: at this time and by all other Christian nations of Europe,
• 25:58
Speaker 1: as a mere butchery, a bloody and unnatural peace of cruelty,
• 26:04
Speaker 1: unjustifiable either to God or man, and for which the
• 26:08
Speaker 1: very name of a Spaniard is reckoned to be frightful
• 26:13
Speaker 1: and terrible to all people of humanity or of Christian compassion,
• 26:19
Speaker 1: as if the Kingdom of Spain were particularly imminent for
• 26:22
Speaker 1: the produce of a race of men who were without
• 26:27
Speaker 1: principles of tenderness or the common bowels of pity to
• 26:31
Speaker 1: the miserable, which is reckoned to be a mark of
• 26:35
Speaker 1: generous temper. In the mind, these considerations really put me
• 26:41
Speaker 1: to a pause and to a kind of full stop.
• 26:45
Speaker 1: And I began, by little and little to be off
• 26:48
Speaker 1: my design, and to conclude that I had taken wrong
• 26:52
Speaker 1: measures in my resolution to attack the savages, and that
• 26:56
Speaker 1: it was not my business to meddle with them unless
• 26:59
Speaker 1: they first attacked me, and this it was my business,
• 27:04
Speaker 1: if possible, to prevent, but that if I were discovered
• 27:08
Speaker 1: and attacked by them, I knew my duty. On the
• 27:12
Speaker 1: other hand, I argued with myself that this was really
• 27:16
Speaker 1: the way, not to deliver myself, but entirely to ruin
• 27:21
Speaker 1: and destroy myself, For unless I was sure to kill
• 27:24
Speaker 1: every one of them, that not only should be on
• 27:27
Speaker 1: the shore at that time, but that should ever come
• 27:30
Speaker 1: on shore afterwards if but one of them escaped to
• 27:34
Speaker 1: tell their country people what had happened, they would come
• 27:37
Speaker 1: over again by thousands to revenge the death of their fellows,
• 27:42
Speaker 1: and I should only bring upon myself a certain destruction
• 27:46
Speaker 1: which at present I had no manner of occasion for.
• 27:51
Speaker 1: Upon the whole I concluded that I ought neither in
• 27:54
Speaker 1: principle nor in policy, one way or other, to concern
• 27:57
Speaker 1: myself in this affair. That my my business was by
• 28:01
Speaker 1: all possible means to conceal myself from them, and not
• 28:05
Speaker 1: to leave the least sign for them to guess by
• 28:08
Speaker 1: that there were any living creatures upon the island, I
• 28:13
Speaker 1: mean of human shape. Religion joined in with this prudential resolution,
• 28:20
Speaker 1: and I was convinced now many ways that I was
• 28:23
Speaker 1: perfectly out of my duty when I was laying all
• 28:26
Speaker 1: my bloody schemes for the destruction of innocent creatures, I
• 28:30
Speaker 1: mean innocent as to me. As to the crimes they
• 28:33
Speaker 1: were guilty of towards one another, I had nothing to
• 28:36
Speaker 1: do with them. They were national, and I ought to
• 28:40
Speaker 1: leave them to the justice of God, who is the
• 28:42
Speaker 1: governor of nations, and knows how by national punishments to
• 28:47
Speaker 1: make a just retribution for national offenses, and to bring
• 28:51
Speaker 1: public judgments upon those who offend in a public manner
• 28:55
Speaker 1: by such ways as best please him. Appeared so clear
• 29:01
Speaker 1: to me now that nothing was a greater satisfaction to
• 29:05
Speaker 1: me than that I had not been suffered to do
• 29:08
Speaker 1: a thing which I now saw so much reason to
• 29:11
Speaker 1: believe would have been no less a sin than that
• 29:14
Speaker 1: of wilful murder if I had committed it. And I
• 29:18
Speaker 1: gave most humble thanks on my knees to God that
• 29:23
Speaker 1: he had thus delivered me from blood guiltiness, beseeching him
• 29:28
Speaker 1: to grant me the protection of his providence, that I
• 29:32
Speaker 1: might not fall into the hands of the barbarians, or
• 29:35
Speaker 1: that I might not lay my hands upon them, unless
• 29:39
Speaker 1: I had a more clear call from Heaven to do
• 29:42
Speaker 1: it in defense of my own life. In this disposition
• 29:48
Speaker 1: I continued for near a year after this, and so
• 29:52
Speaker 1: far was I from desiring an occasion for falling upon
• 29:56
Speaker 1: these wretches, that in all that time I never once
• 29:59
Speaker 1: went up to the hill to see whether there were
• 30:03
Speaker 1: any of them in sight, or to know whether any
• 30:06
Speaker 1: of them had been on shore there or not. That
• 30:09
Speaker 1: I might not be tempted to renew any of my
• 30:12
Speaker 1: contrivances against them, or be provoked by any advantage that
• 30:18
Speaker 1: might present itself to fall upon them. Only this I did.
• 30:23
Speaker 1: I went and removed my boat, which I had on
• 30:26
Speaker 1: the other side of the island, and carried it down
• 30:29
Speaker 1: to the east end of the whole island, where I
• 30:33
Speaker 1: ran it into a little cove which I found under
• 30:36
Speaker 1: some high rocks, and where I knew, by reason of
• 30:39
Speaker 1: the currents, the savages durst not at least would not
• 30:43
Speaker 1: come with their boats upon any account whatsoever. With my
• 30:48
Speaker 1: boat I carried away everything that I had left there
• 30:52
Speaker 1: belonging to her, though not necessary for the bear going thither.
• 30:57
Speaker 1: That is a mast and sail which I had made
• 31:00
Speaker 1: for her, in a thing like an anchor, but which
• 31:03
Speaker 1: indeed could not be called either anchor or a grapnel. However,
• 31:08
Speaker 1: it was the best I could make of its kind.
• 31:12
Speaker 1: All these I removed that there might not be the
• 31:15
Speaker 1: least shadow for discovery or appearance of any boat, or
• 31:20
Speaker 1: of any human habitation upon the island. Besides this, I
• 31:26
Speaker 1: kept myself more to myself, as I said, more retired
• 31:30
Speaker 1: than ever, and seldom went from my cell except upon
• 31:34
Speaker 1: my constant employment to milk my she goats and manage
• 31:38
Speaker 1: my little flock in the wood, which, as it was
• 31:41
Speaker 1: quite on the other part of the island, was out
• 31:43
Speaker 1: of danger. For certain it is that these savage people
• 31:49
Speaker 1: who sometimes haunted this island never came with any thoughts
• 31:52
Speaker 1: of finding anything here, and consequently never wandered off from
• 31:57
Speaker 1: the coast. And I doubt not, but they might have
• 32:01
Speaker 1: been several times on shore after my apprehensions of them
• 32:04
Speaker 1: had made me cautious as well as before. Indeed, I
• 32:09
Speaker 1: looked back with some horror upon the thoughts of what
• 32:13
Speaker 1: my condition would have been if I had chopped upon
• 32:16
Speaker 1: them and been discovered before that, when naked and unarmed
• 32:21
Speaker 1: except with one gun, and that loaded often only with
• 32:24
Speaker 1: small shot, I walked everywhere, peeping and peering about the
• 32:28
Speaker 1: island to see what I could get. What a surprise
• 32:32
Speaker 1: should I have been in if when I discovered the
• 32:35
Speaker 1: print of a man's foot, I had, instead of that,
• 32:39
Speaker 1: seen fifteen or twenty savages, and found them pursuing me,
• 32:44
Speaker 1: and by the swiftness of their running, no possibility of
• 32:50
Speaker 1: my escaping them. The thoughts of this sometimes sank my
• 32:54
Speaker 1: very soul within me, and distressed my mind so much
• 32:57
Speaker 1: that I could not soon recover it to think what
• 33:01
Speaker 1: I should have done, and how I should not only
• 33:04
Speaker 1: have been unable to resist them, but even should not
• 33:07
Speaker 1: have had presence of mind enough to do what I
• 33:11
Speaker 1: might have done, much less what now, after so much
• 33:14
Speaker 1: consideration and preparation I might be able to do. Indeed,
• 33:20
Speaker 1: after serious thinking of these things, I would be melancholy,
• 33:24
Speaker 1: and sometimes it would last a great while. But I
• 33:28
Speaker 1: resolved it all at last into thankfulness to that providence
• 33:32
Speaker 1: which had delivered me, and had kept me from so
• 33:36
Speaker 1: many unseen dangers, and from those mischiefs which I could
• 33:43
Speaker 1: have no way been the agent in delivering myself from,
• 33:47
Speaker 1: because I had not the least notion of any such
• 33:50
Speaker 1: thing depending or the least supposition of its being possible.
• 33:57
Speaker 1: This renewed a contemplation which often had come into my
• 33:59
Speaker 1: thought in former times, when first I began to see
• 34:03
Speaker 1: the merciful dispositions of Heaven in the dangers we run
• 34:07
Speaker 1: through in this life. How wonderfully we are delivered when
• 34:12
Speaker 1: we know nothing of it. How when we are in
• 34:14
Speaker 1: a quandary, as we call it, a doubt or hesitation,
• 34:18
Speaker 1: whether to go this way or that way, secret hint
• 34:23
Speaker 1: will direct us this way when we intended to go
• 34:26
Speaker 1: that way. Nay, when since our own inclination and perhaps business,
• 34:33
Speaker 1: has called us to go the other way. Yet a
• 34:36
Speaker 1: strange impression upon the mind, from we know not what springs,
• 34:41
Speaker 1: and by we know not what power shall overrule us
• 34:46
Speaker 1: to go this way, and it shall afterwards appear that
• 34:50
Speaker 1: had we gone that way which we should have gone,
• 34:54
Speaker 1: and even to our imagination ought to have gone, we
• 34:57
Speaker 1: should have been ruined and lost. Upon those and many
• 35:03
Speaker 1: like reflections, I afterwards made it a certain rule with
• 35:06
Speaker 1: me that whenever I found those secret hints or pressings
• 35:11
Speaker 1: of mind to doing or not doing anything that presented
• 35:15
Speaker 1: or going this way or that way, I never failed
• 35:19
Speaker 1: to obey the secret dictate, though I knew no other
• 35:23
Speaker 1: reason for it than such a pressure or such a
• 35:27
Speaker 1: hint hung upon my mind. I could give many examples
• 35:31
Speaker 1: of the success of this conduct in the course of
• 35:33
Speaker 1: my life, but more especially in the latter part of
• 35:37
Speaker 1: my inhabiting this unhappy island, besides many occasions which it
• 35:42
Speaker 1: is very likely I might have taken notice of if
• 35:45
Speaker 1: I had seen with the same eyes then that I
• 35:49
Speaker 1: see with now. But it is never too late to
• 35:52
Speaker 1: be wise, and I cannot but advise all considering men
• 35:58
Speaker 1: whose lives are tended with such extraordinary incidents as mine,
• 36:03
Speaker 1: or even though not so extraordinary, not to slight, such
• 36:08
Speaker 1: secret intimations of providence. Let them come from what invisible
• 36:14
Speaker 1: intelligence they will, that I shall not discuss, and perhaps
• 36:18
Speaker 1: cannot account for. But certainly they are a proof of
• 36:23
Speaker 1: the converse of spirits, and a secret communication between those
• 36:27
Speaker 1: embodied and those unembodied, And such a proof as can
• 36:32
Speaker 1: never be understood, of which I shall have occasion to
• 36:36
Speaker 1: give some remarkable instances in the remainder of my solitary
• 36:40
Speaker 1: residence in this dismal place. I believe the reader of
• 36:46
Speaker 1: this will not think it's strange if I confess that
• 36:49
Speaker 1: these anxieties, these constant dangers, I lived in, and the
• 36:53
Speaker 1: concern that was now upon me, put an end to
• 36:56
Speaker 1: all invention, into all the contrivances that I laid for
• 36:59
Speaker 1: my fear future accommodations and conveniences. I had the care
• 37:04
Speaker 1: of my safety more now upon my hands than that
• 37:08
Speaker 1: of my food. I cared not to drive a nail
• 37:12
Speaker 1: or chop a stick of wood now, for fear the
• 37:14
Speaker 1: noise I might make should be heard. Much less would
• 37:18
Speaker 1: I fire a gun for the same reason. And above
• 37:21
Speaker 1: all I was intolerably uneasy at making any fire, lest
• 37:25
Speaker 1: the smoke which is visible at a great distance. In
• 37:28
Speaker 1: the day should betray me. For this reason, I removed
• 37:32
Speaker 1: that part of my business which required fire, such as
• 37:36
Speaker 1: burning of pots and pipes, et cetera, into my new
• 37:40
Speaker 1: apartment in the woods, where after I had been for
• 37:43
Speaker 1: some time, I found to my unspeakable consolation, a mere
• 37:48
Speaker 1: natural cave in the earth, which went in a vast
• 37:51
Speaker 1: way in where I dare say, no savage, had he
• 37:55
Speaker 1: been at the mouth of it, would be so hearty
• 37:58
Speaker 1: as to venture in. Indeed, would any man else but
• 38:02
Speaker 1: one who like me, wanted nothing so much as a
• 38:06
Speaker 1: safe retreat. The mouth of this hollow was at the
• 38:11
Speaker 1: bottom of a great rock, where, by mere accident, I
• 38:15
Speaker 1: would say, if I did not see abundant reason to
• 38:18
Speaker 1: ascribe all such things now to providence. I was cutting
• 38:22
Speaker 1: down some thick branches of trees to make charcoal, And
• 38:27
Speaker 1: before I go on, I must observe the reason of
• 38:30
Speaker 1: my making this charcoal, which was this. I was afraid
• 38:34
Speaker 1: of making a smoke about my habitation, as I said before,
• 38:38
Speaker 1: And yet I could not live there without baking my bread,
• 38:42
Speaker 1: cooking my meat, etc. So I contrived to burn some
• 38:46
Speaker 1: wood here, as I had seen done in England under turf,
• 38:50
Speaker 1: till it became chark or dry coal, and then putting
• 38:55
Speaker 1: the fire out, I preserved the coal to carry home
• 39:00
Speaker 1: the other services for which fire was wanting, without danger
• 39:04
Speaker 1: of smoke. But this is by the bye. While I
• 39:09
Speaker 1: was cutting down some wood here I perceived that behind
• 39:12
Speaker 1: a very thick branch of low brushwood or underwood, there
• 39:17
Speaker 1: was a kind of hollow place. I was curious to
• 39:20
Speaker 1: look in it, and getting with difficulty into the mouth
• 39:22
Speaker 1: of it, I found it was pretty large, that is
• 39:25
Speaker 1: to say, sufficient for me to stand upright in, and
• 39:29
Speaker 1: perhaps another with me. But I must confess to you
• 39:33
Speaker 1: that I made more haste out than I did in.
• 39:37
Speaker 1: When looking farther into the place, which was perfectly dark,
• 39:41
Speaker 1: I saw two broad shining eyes of some creature, whether
• 39:46
Speaker 1: devil or man, I knew not, which twinkled like two stars,
• 39:51
Speaker 1: the dim light from the cave's mouth, shining directly in
• 39:55
Speaker 1: and making the reflection. However, after some pause, I recovered
• 39:59
Speaker 1: myself and began to call myself a thousand fools, and
• 40:03
Speaker 1: to think that he that was afraid to see the
• 40:06
Speaker 1: devil was not fit to live twenty years in an
• 40:09
Speaker 1: island all alone, and that I might well think there
• 40:13
Speaker 1: was nothing in this cave that was more frightful than myself.
• 40:18
Speaker 1: Upon this, plucking up my courage, I took up a firebrand,
• 40:23
Speaker 1: and and I rushed again, with the stick flaming in
• 40:26
Speaker 1: my hand. I had not gone three steps in before
• 40:30
Speaker 1: I was almost as frightened as before, for I heard
• 40:33
Speaker 1: a very loud sigh, like that of a man in
• 40:36
Speaker 1: some pain, and it was followed by a broken noise,
• 40:40
Speaker 1: as of words hath expressed, and then a deep sigh. Again.
• 40:46
Speaker 1: I stepped back, and was indeed struck with such a
• 40:49
Speaker 1: surprise that it put me into a cold sweat. And
• 40:53
Speaker 1: if I had had a hat upon my head, I
• 40:56
Speaker 1: will not answer for it that my hair might not
• 40:59
Speaker 1: have lifted it off. But still plucking up my spirits
• 41:04
Speaker 1: as well as I could, and encouraging myself a little
• 41:07
Speaker 1: with considering that the power and presence of God was
• 41:11
Speaker 1: everywhere and was able to protect me, I stepped forward again,
• 41:16
Speaker 1: and by the light of the firebrand, holding it up
• 41:19
Speaker 1: a little over my head, I saw lying on the
• 41:22
Speaker 1: ground a monstrous, frightful old he goat, just making his will,
• 41:29
Speaker 1: as we say, and gasping for life, and dying indeed
• 41:35
Speaker 1: of mere old age. I stirred him a little to
• 41:39
Speaker 1: see if I could get him out, And he has
• 41:41
Speaker 1: saved to get up, but was not able to raise himself.
• 41:45
Speaker 1: And I thought with myself he might even lie there,
• 41:49
Speaker 1: for if he had frightened me, so he would certainly
• 41:52
Speaker 1: fright away any of the savages, if any of them
• 41:55
Speaker 1: should be so hearty as to come in there while
• 41:58
Speaker 1: he had life in him. I was now recovered from
• 42:03
Speaker 1: my surprise and began to look around me when I
• 42:05
Speaker 1: found the cave was but very small. That is to say,
• 42:09
Speaker 1: it might be about twelve feet over, but in no
• 42:13
Speaker 1: manner of shape, neither round or square, no hands having
• 42:16
Speaker 1: ever been employed in making it, but those of mere nature.
• 42:21
Speaker 1: I observed also that there was a place at the
• 42:23
Speaker 1: farther side of it that went in further, but was
• 42:27
Speaker 1: so low that it required me to creep upon my
• 42:30
Speaker 1: hands and knees to go into it. And whither it
• 42:33
Speaker 1: went I knew not so, having no candle, I gave
• 42:37
Speaker 1: it over for that time, but resolved to go again
• 42:40
Speaker 1: the next day, provided with candles and a tinder box,
• 42:44
Speaker 1: which I had made of the lock of one of
• 42:46
Speaker 1: the muskets, with some wildfire in the pan. Accordingly, the
• 42:53
Speaker 1: next day I came provided with six large candles of
• 42:57
Speaker 1: my own making, for I had very good candles now
• 43:00
Speaker 1: of goat's tallow, but was hard set for candle wick,
• 43:04
Speaker 1: using sometimes rags or rope yarn, and sometimes the dried
• 43:09
Speaker 1: rind of a weed like nettles. And going into this
• 43:13
Speaker 1: low place, I was obliged to creep upon all fours,
• 43:16
Speaker 1: as I have said, almost ten yards, which by the way,
• 43:20
Speaker 1: I thought was a venture bold enough, considering that I
• 43:24
Speaker 1: knew not how far it might go, nor what was
• 43:28
Speaker 1: beyond it. When I had got through the strait, I
• 43:32
Speaker 1: found the roof rose higher up, I believe near twenty feet.
• 43:37
Speaker 1: But never was such a glorious sight seen in the island.
• 43:43
Speaker 1: I dare say, as it was to look round the
• 43:46
Speaker 1: sides and roof of this vault or cave. The wall
• 43:49
Speaker 1: reflected one hundred thousand lights to me from my two candles.
• 43:54
Speaker 1: What was in the rock, whether diamonds or any other
• 43:59
Speaker 1: precious or gold, which I rather supposed it to be,
• 44:03
Speaker 1: I knew not. The place I was in was a
• 44:06
Speaker 1: most delightful cavity or grotto. Though perfectly dark, the floor
• 44:12
Speaker 1: was dry and level and had a sort of a
• 44:15
Speaker 1: small loose gravel upon it, so that there was no
• 44:19
Speaker 1: nauseous or venomous creature to be seen. Neither was there
• 44:23
Speaker 1: any damp or wet on the sides of roof. The
• 44:26
Speaker 1: only difficulty in it was the entrance, which, however, as
• 44:31
Speaker 1: it was a place of security and such a retreat
• 44:33
Speaker 1: as I wanted, I thought was a convenience, so that
• 44:38
Speaker 1: I was really rejoiced at the discovery, and resolved without
• 44:42
Speaker 1: any delay to bring some of the things which I
• 44:45
Speaker 1: was most anxious about to this place. Particularly, I resolved
• 44:50
Speaker 1: to bring hinder my magazine of powder and all my
• 44:54
Speaker 1: spare arms, that is two fouling pieces, for I had
• 44:58
Speaker 1: three in all, and three muskets four of them I
• 45:02
Speaker 1: had eight at all, so I kept in my castle
• 45:05
Speaker 1: only five, which stood ready mounted like pieces of cannon,
• 45:09
Speaker 1: on my utmost fence, and were ready also to take
• 45:13
Speaker 1: out upon any expedition. Upon this occasion of removing my ammunition,
• 45:19
Speaker 1: I happened to open the barrel of powder which I
• 45:22
Speaker 1: took up out of the sea, and which had been wet,
• 45:26
Speaker 1: And I found that the water had penetrated about three
• 45:29
Speaker 1: or four inches into the powder on every side, which
• 45:33
Speaker 1: caking and growing hard, had preserved the inside like a
• 45:37
Speaker 1: kernel in the shell, so that I had near sixty
• 45:41
Speaker 1: pounds of very good powder in the center of the cask.
• 45:45
Speaker 1: This was a very agreeable discovery to be at that time.
• 45:48
Speaker 1: So I carried all away thither, never keeping above two
• 45:53
Speaker 1: or three pounds of powder with me in my castle,
• 45:56
Speaker 1: for fear of a surprise of any kind. I also
• 45:59
Speaker 1: carried thither all the lead I had left for bullets.
• 46:04
Speaker 1: I fancied myself now like one of the ancient giants
• 46:08
Speaker 1: who were said to live in caves and holes in
• 46:11
Speaker 1: the rocks, where none could come at them. For I
• 46:15
Speaker 1: persuaded myself while I was here that if five hundred
• 46:19
Speaker 1: savages were to hunt me, they could never find me out,
• 46:23
Speaker 1: or if they did, they would not venture to attack
• 46:26
Speaker 1: me here. The old goat, whom I found expiring, died
• 46:31
Speaker 1: in the mouth of the cave the next day after
• 46:33
Speaker 1: I made this discovery, And I found it much easier
• 46:36
Speaker 1: to dig a great hole there and throw him in
• 46:40
Speaker 1: and cover him with earth than to drag him out.
• 46:43
Speaker 1: So I in teared him there to prevent offense to
• 46:48
Speaker 1: my nose. End of Chapter twelve
