- 0:16Speaker 1: Good Thursday to you.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Glad to be with you here on a Thursday afternoon
- 0:21Speaker 2: here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. Welcome
- 0:24Speaker 2: to the program. My name is Craig White. Glad to
- 0:26Speaker 2: have you with us here. We're with you each and
- 0:28Speaker 2: every weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday from 2 to 5.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And happy to be with you again to discuss not
- 0:39Speaker 2: only all manner of and varieties of the world of
- 0:43Speaker 2: perspiring arts, but the specifics. I know a lot of
- 0:46Speaker 2: you like the specificity of specific teams like the Texas Longhorns.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Toward that end, what we have for you today, this
- 0:59Speaker 2: being a Thursday, we'll hear from Longhorns head coach Steve
- 1:02Speaker 2: Sarkeesian from that Thursday media Zoom he does. It's the
- 1:08Speaker 2: last media availability that he has before the next football game,
- 1:15Speaker 2: in this case, Saturday night's game, as they'll take on
- 1:19Speaker 2: the Ole Miss Rebels. The kickoff exactly at 6.49 p.m.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Our coverage will actually begin at 2.30 in the afternoon
- 1:31Speaker 2: with a third and Longhorn preview from the third and
- 1:35Speaker 2: Longhorn podcast, guys. So we'll have that for you at 2.30.
- 1:41Speaker 2: At 3.30, Longhorns game day down on Bevo Boulevard. They're
- 1:46Speaker 2: in the Winship Circle or the Winship area, however you
- 1:49Speaker 2: choose to describe it. Jake Herman, the producer of this program,
- 1:53Speaker 2: will be down there twisting and tweaking the dials and
- 1:56Speaker 2: offering up some information on the matchup as well as
- 2:00Speaker 2: he joins the hosts, Mike Hardball-Hard, Mark Henry, Eric Henry
- 2:04Speaker 2: will be along in there. So you guys are expecting
- 2:07Speaker 2: a decent day of weather and be able to relax
- 2:11Speaker 2: and enjoy and have a good time out at Winship, right?
- 2:13Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, as much as we love to do
- 2:16Speaker 3: the pregame show in any kickoff time, there is a
- 2:19Speaker 3: little bit of extra juice when you get people that
- 2:21Speaker 3: are spending the day down on Bevo Boulevard and you
- 2:23Speaker 3: don't have to start maybe before the sun comes up.
- 2:26Speaker 3: People don't have to set their alarms to come see us.
- 2:28Speaker 3: So it should be a lot of fun down there
- 2:31Speaker 3: in the Winship area. Come by, grab some food from
- 2:33Speaker 3: a food truck, big beer thos right next to us
- 2:36Speaker 3: and come get ready for the game with us.
- 2:38Speaker 1: It's a big one. Yeah, so that'll be on Saturday.
- 2:41Speaker 2: And, of course, this, like I said, we're going to
- 2:43Speaker 2: hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, here in just
- 2:46Speaker 2: a moment. Also, as we do every Thursday, Roger Wallace
- 2:49Speaker 2: will join us, sports director of KXAN, of course, here
- 2:51Speaker 2: in town, and my broadcast partner on Longhorn Football Games
- 2:55Speaker 2: and also works with us with filling in with men's
- 2:59Speaker 2: and women's basketball games and also works with us on baseball.
- 3:03Speaker 2: So Roger will be with us. We'll talk Longhorn football,
- 3:07Speaker 2: college football. Also, we will discuss the high school football
- 3:15Speaker 2: plans this week. There are some huge games statewide on
- 3:20Speaker 2: the high school level, and there are two gigantic ones
- 3:22Speaker 2: here in the greater Austin area. So we'll talk about
- 3:25Speaker 2: that as well. We do have inconceivable this hour. So,
- 3:31Speaker 2: you know, the things that fall into the inconceivable file
- 3:34Speaker 2: we'll bring to you.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Also this hour.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Next hour, we'll also hear from the coaches of the
- 3:43Speaker 2: resident NFL teams here. We'll hear from D'Amico Ryans, head
- 3:48Speaker 2: coach of the Houston Texans, and Brian Schottenheimer, head coach
- 3:51Speaker 2: of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 3:53Speaker 1: We'll have that coming up as well.
- 3:56Speaker 2: And then we're going to get a preview of the
- 3:59Speaker 2: World Series. Gene Watson, our MLB insider from the Chicago
- 4:03Speaker 2: White Sox front office, joins us to preview the World
- 4:07Speaker 2: Series matchup between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays,
- 4:11Speaker 2: each of whom have never won a World Series.
- 4:14Speaker 1: And we'll get Gino to break it down for us.
- 4:17Speaker 1: That's coming up in the 3 o'clock hour.
- 4:20Speaker 2: In the 4 o'clock hour today, give you a little
- 4:22Speaker 2: sneak preview, as we always do, of Longhorn Weekly with
- 4:24Speaker 2: Coach Sark. Sark's radio show comes your way tonight at
- 4:28Speaker 2: 7 o'clock. here on The Zone. We record it on
- 4:33Speaker 2: Wednesday evenings. So we'll have SART's radio show. We'll have
- 4:38Speaker 2: a little preview of it about what they're fighting through
- 4:40Speaker 2: and trying to get through right now, injuries included, to
- 4:45Speaker 2: get ready for this matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels.
- 4:49Speaker 1: And so we'll have that.
- 4:51Speaker 2: And by the way, Kwon Cosby's our special guest on
- 4:55Speaker 2: the program. It's a great perspective from Kwon, who of course,
- 4:59Speaker 2: Played the position and was our sideline reporter for seven years.
- 5:02Speaker 2: And then also now working, he's up in the towers,
- 5:06Speaker 2: working in the president's office. So the mayor, as I
- 5:09Speaker 2: like to call him, Quan Cosby, is part of the program.
- 5:12Speaker 2: So we'll have that coming up. All right, let's jump
- 5:14Speaker 2: right into it. Hearing from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian,
- 5:18Speaker 2: from the weekly Thursday media Zoom. This is the last
- 5:21Speaker 2: opportunity he visits with any media until my pregame interview
- 5:26Speaker 2: with him, which is about an hour 45 before kickoff.
- 5:29Speaker 1: On Saturday. So first of all, Sarge, opening thoughts.
- 5:32Speaker 4: You know, obviously big time SEC matchup Saturday night at DKR.
- 5:37Speaker 4: I touched on it on the radio show and somewhat
- 5:40Speaker 4: on Monday, but there's nothing like a night game at
- 5:43Speaker 4: DKR with our fans and how exciting this opportunity is
- 5:47Speaker 4: for us to play in.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Front of them.
- 5:50Speaker 4: We've obviously had a lot of success here at home
- 5:52Speaker 4: and they bring an integral part to that. So looking
- 5:54Speaker 4: forward to a great environment Saturday night. Been really proud
- 5:57Speaker 4: of our team this week. They have worked extremely hard.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Now we need to carry that over to the game,
- 6:03Speaker 4: but it wasn't for lack of effort in what they
- 6:05Speaker 4: put in, you know, Monday through Thursday of this week
- 6:08Speaker 4: of getting themselves ready for a big-time matchup.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Okay.
- 6:12Speaker 2: A very quick question followed by a very quick response.
- 6:14Speaker 2: When the Q & A opened, he was asked if
- 6:18Speaker 2: the coaches decide, the position coaches decide the personnel groupings,
- 6:25Speaker 2: and who is going in and going out, or does
- 6:29Speaker 2: Sark make that decision? This is, and our friend Chip
- 6:34Speaker 2: Brown asked this, but clearly, you know, this is with
- 6:41Speaker 2: an eye toward questions coming from fans about who's deciding
- 6:43Speaker 2: who's in the game at certain points. So those who
- 6:47Speaker 2: write for the fan sites bring the questions to Sark,
- 6:51Speaker 2: and this was one of them. Do the position coaches
- 6:52Speaker 2: decide who goes into the ballgame, or does he decide it?
- 6:55Speaker 4: We do that as a staff.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Plain and simple. They just do that together as a group. Okay.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Next, he was asked if Arch Manning's performance, and this
- 7:09Speaker 2: goes back really what Sark said after they lost to Florida,
- 7:16Speaker 2: that everything would be evaluated. And some people got their...
- 7:22Speaker 2: Feathers ruffled a little bit when they said, well, does
- 7:24Speaker 2: that mean Danny Davis' follow-up? Does that mean Archman? He said,
- 7:27Speaker 2: everything means everything. Apparently, that didn't sit too well with
- 7:30Speaker 2: some folks. I was reading some of the national thing. Sarco,
- 7:34Speaker 2: a terse response saying everything. I think it's just because
- 7:38Speaker 2: he plainly spelled it out. Everything is going to be evaluated.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And then when the follow-up comes, does that mean the quarterback?
- 7:43Speaker 2: Everything means everything. That's what that meant. But going further
- 7:50Speaker 2: into it, This morning, Sark was asked if Arch Manning
- 7:55Speaker 2: would be evaluated while the game was going on, or
- 8:00Speaker 2: would he then possibly only be removed from the game
- 8:05Speaker 2: if the game was a blowout one way or the other?
- 8:09Speaker 4: It just depends. Every game's different. I think Arch has
- 8:13Speaker 4: had a good week of work. He's prepared himself well.
- 8:16Speaker 4: But like the team, we need to play well. And
- 8:19Speaker 4: so we'll go from there.
- 8:21Speaker 1: All right.
- 8:22Speaker 2: He was then asked about how he guides his team
- 8:27Speaker 2: when it comes to blocking out the outside noise. Now,
- 8:31Speaker 2: this is something that's happened quite a bit. You know,
- 8:34Speaker 2: we hear it. And you hear this with regard to
- 8:39Speaker 2: virtually every program in college football at some point during
- 8:43Speaker 2: the season or another, especially the higher profile programs.
- 8:46Speaker 1: And you hear it more... when a team faces adversity.
- 8:51Speaker 2: So he was asked about how he goes about blocking
- 8:57Speaker 2: out the pressure and getting the team to block out
- 9:00Speaker 2: the outside noise and the pressures that can build from outside.
- 9:03Speaker 4: I think the best way to do that is to
- 9:04Speaker 4: pour into one another, stay connected inside of our building.
- 9:09Speaker 4: I'm not one that really succumbs to outside noise. I
- 9:12Speaker 4: really don't care. Quite frankly, that's never been a motivator
- 9:16Speaker 4: for me, whether it's good or bad. Because there's one
- 9:20Speaker 4: week you're the greatest, the next week you're the worst.
- 9:23Speaker 4: And so if you ride that emotional roller coaster of
- 9:25Speaker 4: the opinions of others, that's a delicate way to live.
- 9:30Speaker 4: So you have to be internally motivated, and internally motivated
- 9:34Speaker 4: is the individual, but also collectively the team and the
- 9:38Speaker 4: people in the organization. So that's why I said after
- 9:40Speaker 4: the game, this is now more important of a time
- 9:43Speaker 4: to stay connected to one another, lean into one another,
- 9:46Speaker 4: feed off of one another, and that'll put us in
- 9:49Speaker 4: the best position to be successful.
- 9:50Speaker 2: All right, and then one more this hour, and we'll
- 9:52Speaker 2: hear some from Sark next hour and also in the four.
- 9:56Speaker 1: O'clock hour as well. If you saw.
- 10:00Speaker 2: the SEC student athlete availability report, in other words, the
- 10:08Speaker 2: injury report, and it comes out first on Wednesday nights.
- 10:13Speaker 2: And if you saw the details on it, I'll tell
- 10:16Speaker 2: you what, in fact, instead of just saying, if you saw,
- 10:19Speaker 2: I'll tell you what it is. those who are available,
- 10:21Speaker 2: and more importantly and in specifically, those who are not available.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And those who are not available includes Richard Wesley, the
- 10:33Speaker 2: edge rusher, who's the backup to Colin Simmons. And Simmons
- 10:38Speaker 2: is listed as doubtful for the game with that ankle injury.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Richard Wesley was injured in practice this week. He's listed
- 10:45Speaker 2: as doubtful. Questionable, by the way, Hollywood Smothers.
- 10:49Speaker 6: There.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Kalik Lockett, who is upgraded from out last week to
- 10:52Speaker 2: questionable now, and Jayden Chapman also listed as questionable. But
- 10:56Speaker 2: the things that really come to mind, Smothers being questionable,
- 11:00Speaker 2: and then the two guys who play that one specific
- 11:03Speaker 2: spot on the edge. Now, that doesn't mean that there's
- 11:07Speaker 2: a blank space there, because the edge rushers can go
- 11:09Speaker 2: from either side. But the fact that Richard Wesley is out,
- 11:13Speaker 2: and the fact that Colin Simmons is out, what does
- 11:17Speaker 2: that going to mean for this football team in terms
- 11:22Speaker 2: of the edge rushers? Well, there's other guys. Lance Jackson's
- 11:25Speaker 2: on the opposite side. Zeno Mozalou's on the opposite side.
- 11:28Speaker 2: There's some other guys as well. And Sark was asked,
- 11:32Speaker 2: you know, what is this going to mean with guys
- 11:35Speaker 2: who are listed as being as out or, in the
- 11:39Speaker 2: case of Colin Simmons, doubtful? What does that mean for
- 11:44Speaker 2: his edge rushing position and how creative is Does he
- 11:47Speaker 2: have to be with his staff in being able to
- 11:50Speaker 2: fill that spot?
- 11:51Speaker 4: Without a doubt, depending on Colin's circumstances, we've got four
- 11:55Speaker 4: really good players still. When you talk about Lance and Zena,
- 12:00Speaker 4: Brad and Colton, to go along with the versatility of
- 12:04Speaker 4: a couple of our interior defensive linemen, depending on personnel
- 12:07Speaker 4: packages that we put out there, And also the ability
- 12:10Speaker 4: of Raheem Biles. So we've got enough depth in there.
- 12:13Speaker 4: We've got quality players in there. You never like losing
- 12:16Speaker 4: good players. That part's disappointing. But that's also part of football.
- 12:21Speaker 4: And that's why you have to recruit to the depth
- 12:23Speaker 4: that I think that we have to withstand some of
- 12:26Speaker 4: the injuries that occur. And we're not unique. Other people
- 12:29Speaker 4: are dealing with injuries as well. So you just have
- 12:31Speaker 4: to make sure you've got the right depth in place.
- 12:34Speaker 4: so that those players are prepared to perform and their
- 12:36Speaker 4: numbers are called.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Okay, and the Brad and Colton you mentioned, obviously Brad
- 12:40Speaker 2: Spence and Colton Vosick, who are listed as strong side linebackers,
- 12:44Speaker 2: but we've seen it all season long. Those guys do
- 12:46Speaker 2: spin down to the edge and they flex down to
- 12:49Speaker 2: the edge, especially Vosick has done it, but even Brad
- 12:52Speaker 2: Spence has done it. So there are a couple other guys,
- 12:54Speaker 2: in addition to the aforementioned Lance Jackson and Zeno Mozalou,
- 12:58Speaker 2: those guys in for Richard Wesley, who's definitely out. Colin
- 13:01Speaker 2: Simmons is doubtful, so... doubtful means probably not going to
- 13:07Speaker 2: play is what that means. So, um, probable means doubtful
- 13:12Speaker 2: that he wouldn't play. That's how that spins. But it's, it's, I,
- 13:17Speaker 2: I'd be surprised if Colin Simmons is out there, doesn't,
- 13:20Speaker 2: but he's listed as doubtful, not out, which means they're
- 13:22Speaker 2: trying to get him ready and he's trying to get
- 13:23Speaker 2: himself ready. And he's been banged up quite a bit,
- 13:26Speaker 2: but Richard Wesley's definitely out. And, um, Brad Spence and
- 13:30Speaker 2: Colton Vosick, along with Lance Jackson, Zeno Moselu, are the
- 13:33Speaker 2: guys who probably yet to keep an eye on in
- 13:35Speaker 2: terms of being able to fill those edge rusher spots
- 13:38Speaker 2: and be able to get that type of play they
- 13:41Speaker 2: want on them.
- 13:41Speaker 1: All right.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Coming up, we'll visit Roger Wallace, my broadcast partner along
- 13:47Speaker 2: with football. We'll get his thoughts on this weekend's game
- 13:51Speaker 2: and then talk some high school football with him as well,
- 13:53Speaker 2: right here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone
- 13:56Speaker 2: and where you can always listen to us for free
- 13:57Speaker 2: on the iHeartRadio app.
- 13:59Speaker 7: Scattered like splinters and four or five years slipped.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Away here on uh thursday on sports radio am 13
- 14:07Speaker 2: under the zone of course whenever we uh have roger
- 14:09Speaker 2: wallace join us being the jimmy buffett not only maven
- 14:12Speaker 2: and aficionado that he is but also the knowledge of
- 14:15Speaker 2: that the uh the authority that he is on buffett
- 14:19Speaker 2: i i i have to tell you roger here's the
- 14:20Speaker 2: true confessions you know you know jake has been pulling
- 14:23Speaker 2: these out on his own This one came at my urging.
- 14:26Speaker 2: It's one of my favorites. And I thought, why would
- 14:30Speaker 2: he went to Paris?
- 14:31Speaker 1: Well, let's see.
- 14:32Speaker 2: The Saints and Steelers will be in Paris this Sunday.
- 14:36Speaker 2: For anybody who's thinking, you know, where is Sark going
- 14:38Speaker 2: for answers right now? It would not be Paris, you know,
- 14:42Speaker 2: about that. So I was sitting there just fishing for answers.
- 14:44Speaker 2: I finally said, ah, the hell with it. You know,
- 14:46Speaker 2: I want to hear, he went to Paris anyway. And
- 14:48Speaker 2: I know it's one you appreciate. Yeah, that's a good one.
- 14:52Speaker 7: Now, that's one where, you know, at a concert, obviously
- 14:56Speaker 7: that's pretty slow. Sometimes he'll just give the band a
- 14:59Speaker 7: break and play that one by himself. But, you know,
- 15:03Speaker 7: he got excited when he heard that Bob Dylan was
- 15:05Speaker 7: a fan of that song. And it's funny the reverence
- 15:08Speaker 7: he holds for so many artists today. And, uh, Tom Petty,
- 15:12Speaker 7: for instance, played, covered one of his songs once he
- 15:14Speaker 7: heard about that. So he, he covered wildflowers, uh, for
- 15:18Speaker 7: Tom Petty and, and he heard Dylan liked that song.
- 15:21Speaker 7: And I think he's been quoted as saying that's his
- 15:23Speaker 7: favorite song he's ever written. So yeah, that's, uh, I
- 15:28Speaker 7: say it every week, but that's, you know, that's one
- 15:30Speaker 7: of those Buffett anthems. It's about an old Army veteran. Obviously,
- 15:35Speaker 7: the song kind of tells the story.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you know what I like about it?
- 15:38Speaker 2: It certainly tells the story about how, you know what,
- 15:41Speaker 2: he lost his sight in a night, a bomb killed
- 15:44Speaker 2: his wife and kid.
- 15:45Speaker 1: He was in London and all this stuff.
- 15:47Speaker 2: And then he retires to the islands and leaving to
- 15:50Speaker 2: Buffett to leave in there, he drinks his green label.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I think he says there.
- 15:54Speaker 2: So you're thinking, okay, is he talking about Tangeray there?
- 15:58Speaker 1: What's he talking about?
- 15:59Speaker 6: Right.
- 15:59Speaker 7: You know, that kind of thing. I'm not a beer aficionado,
- 16:02Speaker 7: but he's got a few of those. He's got one
- 16:04Speaker 7: where he references two-perg beer.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:08Speaker 7: And he says 25-cent beer, and he'll joke this is
- 16:11Speaker 7: an old song. That's a woman going crazy on Caroline Street.
- 16:15Speaker 5: So, yeah, he.
- 16:17Speaker 5: It's fun.
- 16:18Speaker 7: The thing about Buffett that I've learned over the years
- 16:20Speaker 7: from people that worked with him is he doesn't like
- 16:22Speaker 7: to repeat lines in his refrains or choruses or whatever
- 16:27Speaker 7: it is. And so if you listen to a song,
- 16:29Speaker 7: he'll change something up subtly. Now, he will some, but
- 16:32Speaker 7: a lot of times he'll change something subtly. So it's
- 16:35Speaker 7: not that same line, but.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Well, here's a perfect example. Yeah, yeah, it is a
- 16:42Speaker 2: perfect example. And by the way, by Green Label, I
- 16:44Speaker 2: think he was talking about gin. I think he was
- 16:45Speaker 2: talking about Tang Ray Gin down in the islands. That's
- 16:49Speaker 2: what I, because I've heard.
- 16:51Speaker 5: See, I don't know anything about beer.
- 16:55Speaker 2: No, I think it's gin in this case. But to
- 16:57Speaker 2: your point about changing lines... One of his all-time favorite
- 17:01Speaker 2: pop songs, I would say, that people love is Cheeseburger
- 17:03Speaker 2: in Paradise. And earlier in the song, he says, you know,
- 17:08Speaker 2: heaven on earth with an onion slice. And then later,
- 17:10Speaker 2: he says, making the best of every virtue and vice, right?
- 17:14Speaker 5: Virtue and vice.
- 17:15Speaker 6: Yep. Yeah.
- 17:15Speaker 1: That's right.
- 17:16Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 17:16Speaker 5: So there's an example.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Exactly on that.
- 17:20Speaker 7: And that's about the guys that come back from a
- 17:23Speaker 7: long stay at sea without, you know, much variety in
- 17:27Speaker 7: their diets.
- 17:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:30Speaker 5: They want a cheeseburger.
- 17:32Speaker 2: It had me going for the dictionary to look for
- 17:33Speaker 2: bulgur wheat to find out what that was. And I
- 17:37Speaker 2: found out I could see why somebody would want a
- 17:39Speaker 2: cheeseburger after eating that.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Okay. We move on to the Longhorns.
- 17:43Speaker 2: One thing that's noteworthy, and I know you spent some
- 17:45Speaker 2: time with Sark this morning, and he did the media
- 17:48Speaker 2: Zoom as well, and the time I spent with him
- 17:50Speaker 2: last night talking about all of a sudden, it's like
- 17:54Speaker 2: if you took that defensive line, all of a sudden
- 17:55Speaker 2: it tilts. because Colin Simmons is probably not going to
- 17:59Speaker 2: play since he's listed as doubtful.
- 18:01Speaker 1: And then Richard Wesley got hurt in practice. And so
- 18:03Speaker 1: he's out for this.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Now, he did make a point of talking about Brad
- 18:07Speaker 2: Spence and Colton Vosick as guys who can come in
- 18:09Speaker 2: there and kind of lift up that end of the
- 18:11Speaker 2: teeter-totter a little bit to go with Lance Jackson and
- 18:13Speaker 2: Zeno Moseluk.
- 18:14Speaker 1: But those are.
- 18:16Speaker 1: That's taking a shot. That's taking a punch.
- 18:19Speaker 2: They're not having those two guys, if indeed Simmons can't
- 18:22Speaker 2: go as.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Well on Saturday.
- 18:24Speaker 5: Yeah, and then you get into how many snaps.
- 18:27Speaker 7: Because you know how they like to rotate that defensive line.
- 18:31Speaker 7: And I'm sure Jackson and Moselew are going to have
- 18:34Speaker 7: to play more snaps. And so it's not just about, yeah,
- 18:37Speaker 7: they've got backups. They think they can make some plays,
- 18:39Speaker 7: but they're going to lean on the guts. And so
- 18:41Speaker 7: what's that toll going to be in the second half?
- 18:44Speaker 7: Not to mention you're doing it against an offense with
- 18:47Speaker 7: Trenton and Chambliss and.
- 18:48Speaker 5: Keywon Lacey and all those guys.
- 18:50Speaker 7: So, yeah, this is just in the blink of an eye,
- 18:54Speaker 7: one area becomes a pretty big concern Saturday night.
- 18:57Speaker 2: You know, there's a guy on my broadcast board, on
- 19:00Speaker 2: my two deep, on my chart, because he's listed there
- 19:02Speaker 2: and it was listed there at the start. that have
- 19:04Speaker 2: had on there and have barely even mentioned his name
- 19:07Speaker 2: other than like in late stages against Texas State or UTSA,
- 19:12Speaker 2: I think, that he's gotten into the ballgame. But the
- 19:15Speaker 2: reason why I bring this guy's name up is because
- 19:17Speaker 2: Sark brought the guy's name up last night when he
- 19:19Speaker 2: was talking about how proud he was and how pleased
- 19:23Speaker 2: he was and how impressed he was with the guys
- 19:27Speaker 2: who were running scout team and the guys that aren't
- 19:30Speaker 2: in the regular vernacular, the guys we talked about.
- 19:32Speaker 1: The guy I'm talking about is Josiah Sharma.
- 19:34Speaker 2: And with them being shorthanded on that defensive front, that
- 19:39Speaker 2: sophomore from Folsom, California is a guy we might see
- 19:42Speaker 2: out there. He's one of those guys that Sark mentioned
- 19:44Speaker 2: that he was pleased to see his work and what
- 19:46Speaker 2: he's done this week as everybody had to go.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Back to work.
- 19:51Speaker 7: Yeah, and it's funny because you think about training camp
- 19:54Speaker 7: and Sark will get asked his availabilities, almost like a
- 19:58Speaker 7: laundry list of questions about, and it's usually about the
- 20:01Speaker 7: young guys who we don't know. I mentioned Sharma once,
- 20:04Speaker 7: and I think one time he kind of forgot him
- 20:07Speaker 7: and then mentioned him a second time, so I don't
- 20:09Speaker 7: want to forget. Josiah Sharma again. So yeah, it's a
- 20:12Speaker 7: guy that's been mentioned a little bit in camp. And
- 20:14Speaker 7: then once the season starts and they get into the rotations,
- 20:18Speaker 7: you kind of, you kind of forget about guys, but yeah,
- 20:20Speaker 7: I mean, this is that perfect storm of, of what
- 20:23Speaker 7: he talks about in August is, is building the depth
- 20:26Speaker 7: and you never know when they're going to have to
- 20:28Speaker 7: be ready. And my goodness, They're going to have to
- 20:30Speaker 7: be ready tomorrow night or Saturday night.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:33Speaker 2: And then one other name I'm glad to see not
- 20:35Speaker 2: on the injury list, and I think they're going to
- 20:37Speaker 2: try to make sure he contributes as well as Derek
- 20:40Speaker 2: Cooper because of what's happening now with Hollywood Smothers listed
- 20:44Speaker 2: as questionable. You may see them rely on the freshman, Cooper,
- 20:49Speaker 2: whereas he just wasn't quite ready, they said, to be
- 20:53Speaker 2: on the field against Florida last week.
- 20:55Speaker 7: Yeah, and so then does Michael Terry elevate into a
- 20:59Speaker 7: role where maybe he gets more snaps or some snaps
- 21:03Speaker 7: or something like that? And then there's the other thing, Craig,
- 21:06Speaker 7: about when he talks about, you know, you've got to
- 21:11Speaker 7: do something. And could that mean a change, get a
- 21:14Speaker 7: bigger back like Terry in there, get more snaps?
- 21:17Speaker 5: I don't know, but... But, you know, we.
- 21:19Speaker 7: Keep hearing about it. Now injuries are one thing. You
- 21:23Speaker 7: thrust into it because of necessity. Now the question, are
- 21:26Speaker 7: we going to see some different guys? I think we're
- 21:28Speaker 7: going to see Jermaine Bishop featured even more, just trying
- 21:31Speaker 7: to get him the ball in space. And, you know,
- 21:34Speaker 7: you go back, and I'm sure you did this too,
- 21:36Speaker 7: but you think of a handful of plays that didn't
- 21:38Speaker 7: go Texas way. I think of the Bishop play on
- 21:40Speaker 7: third down that led to the fourth down miss. And
- 21:43Speaker 7: somehow he got turned around. So I think his, I
- 21:46Speaker 7: think the knee went down to the first down, but
- 21:48Speaker 7: the ball was behind him. I mean, how many times
- 21:51Speaker 7: has that happened where he got spun around? So the
- 21:53Speaker 7: ball wasn't to the first down marker, the knee was,
- 21:56Speaker 7: and then obviously they fail on, they fail on fourth down.
- 21:59Speaker 7: But I think Bishop shows when he gets the ball, that's,
- 22:02Speaker 7: That's potential for one of those home runs that they've
- 22:05Speaker 7: been sorely missing.
- 22:07Speaker 1: You're right. Agreed.
- 22:08Speaker 2: And we thought he picked it up. I know I
- 22:10Speaker 2: did anyway. I even mentioned that at first. And, of course,
- 22:13Speaker 2: our broadcast position is from a different angle now, so
- 22:16Speaker 2: the depth perception is a little bit different. You have
- 22:17Speaker 2: to see off the monitor, but it certainly looked like
- 22:20Speaker 2: he had it.
- 22:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:22Speaker 7: And I mean, you think about that, you think about
- 22:24Speaker 7: Archer's fumble and how many times is he going to
- 22:26Speaker 7: slam the ball into Trevor Goosby's side of his thigh
- 22:30Speaker 7: and dislodge the ball? I mean, they're just kind of
- 22:33Speaker 7: at a if it will go wrong, if it can
- 22:35Speaker 7: go wrong, it will go wrong. And at some point
- 22:38Speaker 7: you think that's going to flip. And and and I
- 22:41Speaker 7: think about balls on the ground and.
- 22:42Speaker 5: They can't get on them. Uh, so anyway, we'll, we'll
- 22:46Speaker 5: see what, what happens.
- 22:47Speaker 7: I got a pretty good team coming in Saturday where
- 22:49Speaker 7: they're gonna try to figure all this out.
- 22:50Speaker 2: No doubt about it. Roger Wallace 20 is here on
- 22:52Speaker 2: 13 under the sun. All right, let's, uh, let me
- 22:54Speaker 2: jump to high school. Um, and I want to make
- 22:57Speaker 2: sure that there's a reason where I'm going, where I'm
- 23:01Speaker 2: going with this. You know me, I'll go around the
- 23:03Speaker 2: garage to get to the barn any chance I get. But, um, the, uh,
- 23:08Speaker 2: The whole thing about the UIL announcement this week, and eventually,
- 23:14Speaker 2: I know a lot of people are.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Excited about the shot clock.
- 23:16Speaker 2: That's going to be slowly phased in. That's to give
- 23:19Speaker 2: the schools, and you notice how it's being scaled out,
- 23:22Speaker 2: the 1As and 2As wanting to worry about until 2032.
- 23:25Speaker 2: That's all financially driven to get, you know, because... Not
- 23:29Speaker 2: only do you have to have shot clocks, you have
- 23:31Speaker 2: to have people to operate them. How many times have
- 23:34Speaker 2: you been at a basketball game and seen, you know,
- 23:36Speaker 2: and there was concern about getting somebody to keep the
- 23:38Speaker 2: book or run the scoreboard and they're going to have to,
- 23:42Speaker 2: that's one more piece they'll have to add.
- 23:43Speaker 1: So there was that.
- 23:44Speaker 2: The pilot program for girls flag football, that's very good
- 23:47Speaker 2: as well, all that. And then kind of at the
- 23:50Speaker 2: bottom was mentioned, oh, and over the air live linear
- 23:56Speaker 2: Friday night telecast will be allowed starting next year. And
- 24:00Speaker 2: it might have slipped past some folks' notice, but I
- 24:02Speaker 2: know it didn't slip past our notice when we saw that.
- 24:05Speaker 2: The reason why I bring this all up is because
- 24:08Speaker 2: a massive game like Westlake-Lake-Travis, yes, fortunately you guys have
- 24:14Speaker 2: it available on KXAN +, but this time next year,
- 24:19Speaker 2: maybe that's on KXAN or at least on KBVO or
- 24:23Speaker 2: KMVA on your CW because you would have that option
- 24:28Speaker 2: next year to put it on live over-the-air television.
- 24:31Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's been a fight.
- 24:32Speaker 7: The Texas Association of Broadcasters have been after this for
- 24:36Speaker 7: a long time. And part of it is, if you
- 24:38Speaker 7: allow live streams, what is the difference in 2026? Because
- 24:44Speaker 7: you can turn on your TV, turn on the app KXAM.
- 24:47Speaker 5: +, and watch a high school game on a full.
- 24:51Speaker 7: Broadcast-looking game, and you're watching it on your 60-, 70-inch TV,
- 24:56Speaker 7: and you're 10 minutes in, you don't know if you're
- 25:00Speaker 7: watching TV or a stream. So I think that's part
- 25:02Speaker 7: of the TAB's reasoning. And the other part is they
- 25:06Speaker 7: still have the.
- 25:09Speaker 5: Loophole, not the loophole, but the.
- 25:12Speaker 7: you have to get permission. So if there are school
- 25:14Speaker 7: districts that are worried that a game might be, a
- 25:17Speaker 7: gate might be affected by a game being televised, they
- 25:20Speaker 7: can refuse permission.
- 25:21Speaker 5: So they covered them in that regard.
- 25:24Speaker 7: But I think once streaming became so prominent, it just
- 25:27Speaker 7: didn't make sense that there's, in this day and age,
- 25:30Speaker 7: there's really no difference. You consume it virtually the same way.
- 25:35Speaker 7: So I think that's part of it. And now if
- 25:38Speaker 7: Westlake and Lake Travis, if they were to say, you
- 25:40Speaker 7: know what, We think this would hurt our gate, which
- 25:43Speaker 7: I can't imagine because they're going to sell out. You
- 25:44Speaker 7: know what I'm saying? Then they hold the final say
- 25:49Speaker 7: to get approval. And we do that even with our
- 25:51Speaker 7: Thursday night games, Craig. We still go through the steps
- 25:54Speaker 7: of contacting each school district, each high school, and getting
- 25:58Speaker 7: their permission.
- 26:00Speaker 5: To broadcast the game. And we do it with streams
- 26:02Speaker 5: as well.
- 26:03Speaker 7: So they've covered themselves, but it just opens it up
- 26:06Speaker 7: for us to, maybe we'll have two games a week
- 26:09Speaker 7: next year on TV. Or maybe if Westlake's playing somebody that, say,
- 26:16Speaker 7: we kind of have a hunch it's a mismatch, then
- 26:18Speaker 7: we might plug in our KXAN Plus game. We would
- 26:21Speaker 7: normally do it. Maybe we'll put that on TV. So yeah,
- 26:24Speaker 7: it just opens for a lot of options. And it's
- 26:26Speaker 7: not going to affect a lot because There aren't a
- 26:28Speaker 7: lot of outlets like ours that have three channels that
- 26:31Speaker 7: can broadcast a game and not preempt primetime network programming.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 26:37Speaker 2: And let me also mention somebody who is no small
- 26:42Speaker 2: player in this. It's kind of gotten glossed over because
- 26:45Speaker 2: everybody's just talking about the other stuff. But I'm here
- 26:47Speaker 2: to tell you, I started hearing hints of this back
- 26:49Speaker 2: several months ago. One of the impediments... to preventing it
- 26:54Speaker 2: in the past. Obviously, the school districts, and they were
- 26:57Speaker 2: worried about, you know, the gate being heard, all that,
- 27:00Speaker 2: although I thought some of that was silly of somebody
- 27:03Speaker 2: that's got, you know, Tyler playing Longview, and they're concerned
- 27:07Speaker 2: about a live over-the-air telecast of Midland Lee and Odessa
- 27:10Speaker 2: Permian hurting their gate in East Texas.
- 27:12Speaker 1: That's the example I always go to.
- 27:14Speaker 2: But the other people who were down on it all
- 27:17Speaker 2: the way up until pretty recently were We're the Texas
- 27:20Speaker 2: High School Coaches Association. But let me tell you something,
- 27:23Speaker 2: because I've heard this. The THSCA is getting a little
- 27:27Speaker 2: tired of the Big 12 and other leagues coming in
- 27:31Speaker 2: and televising college games in the state of Texas on
- 27:35Speaker 2: Friday night. And the poster child this year was Houston
- 27:39Speaker 2: at Texas Tech. Tech didn't want it either. And now
- 27:42Speaker 2: the THSCA has spoken up and said, hey, if they're
- 27:46Speaker 2: going to televise college games on Friday night, What's holding
- 27:50Speaker 2: us back from televising high school games to counter programming
- 27:54Speaker 2: on a Friday night?
- 27:56Speaker 5: Yeah, that's interesting.
- 27:57Speaker 7: And that's, I hadn't thought of that, that angle of it,
- 28:00Speaker 7: but that, that makes sense. And I think there are,
- 28:03Speaker 7: there is an appetite out there. I mean, obviously high
- 28:07Speaker 7: school is a community, but there are fans that just
- 28:09Speaker 7: enjoy watching a high school game for whatever reason. Maybe
- 28:14Speaker 7: they're turned off by college football, NFL football, but they,
- 28:18Speaker 7: you know, they kind of like the purity of the
- 28:19Speaker 7: high school game or whatever are just curiosity. So, yeah,
- 28:22Speaker 7: I mean that, It just gives it another chance for
- 28:25Speaker 7: people to watch it and enjoy a high school game
- 28:29Speaker 7: where maybe it's not all about the stuff now we
- 28:31Speaker 7: deal with in the college and the pros.
- 28:33Speaker 1: All right.
- 28:34Speaker 2: I wanted to give you a chance to talk about
- 28:35Speaker 2: what you have on your platforms this week and what
- 28:38Speaker 2: you have on KBVO tonight.
- 28:40Speaker 7: Yeah, I think it'll be a good one. Rouse and
- 28:43Speaker 7: Hutto at Gupton. We know Hutto is a high-flying offense.
- 28:48Speaker 7: And they gave us a great show against Cedar Park.
- 28:51Speaker 7: I know they didn't like the way it ended because
- 28:53Speaker 7: they led virtually the entire game a couple weeks ago.
- 28:56Speaker 7: And then Rouse is probably one of a couple teams
- 29:00Speaker 7: looking for that fourth playoff spot in 24-6A. Uh, and there,
- 29:04Speaker 7: if they get to three and one tonight, then obviously
- 29:06Speaker 7: that really, uh, helps their chances because they still got Vandegrift.
- 29:10Speaker 7: And then we game, we've got, uh, the final Thursday is,
- 29:13Speaker 7: is Rouse and Eastview. And that, that very well could
- 29:15Speaker 7: be for that last spot. And then, um, Hutto still
- 29:19Speaker 7: has to, uh, take on Vandegrift. Uh, they get a
- 29:22Speaker 7: week off. So, uh, that should be good tomorrow night,
- 29:25Speaker 7: obviously with the battle of the lakes, uh, on KXAM
- 29:28Speaker 7: Plus at Lake Travis. And then Keith and I will
- 29:31Speaker 7: be out at Dragon Stadium tomorrow night. Oh, by the way,
- 29:34Speaker 7: the undefeated 6A team in 25-6A is.
- 29:39Speaker 1: The rich. It's not the one everybody thought would be.
- 29:43Speaker 6: That's right.
- 29:44Speaker 5: That's right.
- 29:44Speaker 7: Now they still, they still have to go to Westlake, uh,
- 29:47Speaker 7: and take on Westlake next week and then close with
- 29:50Speaker 7: round rock, but Cedar Ridge seven and oh, against Stoney point.
- 29:53Speaker 7: If Stoney point, you know, wants to have a fighting
- 29:55Speaker 7: chance of, of getting, you know, that fourth spot, uh,
- 29:59Speaker 7: and 25, six, a, they're going to need.
- 30:00Speaker 5: To pull off the upset of dragon.
- 30:02Speaker 7: So, uh, that's our menu three games, uh, one tonight,
- 30:05Speaker 7: two tomorrow on, on KX and plus, obviously the highlight is, uh,
- 30:09Speaker 7: is Westlake and Lake Travis, so that should be a
- 30:11Speaker 7: lot of fun.
- 30:12Speaker 2: And folks on KXAN Plus can see feeds from other games, correct?
- 30:17Speaker 5: That's right, that's right.
- 30:18Speaker 7: And, you know, we're dealing with technology, so we've kind
- 30:21Speaker 7: of moved past, let's just say, go to KXAN Plus
- 30:25Speaker 7: and see what's there.
- 30:26Speaker 5: We've had, you know, it's year one of this, so.
- 30:28Speaker 7: Sometimes it's there, sometimes we've had some technical issues, but
- 30:33Speaker 7: we control the feed.
- 30:34Speaker 5: Of the games I'm talking about.
- 30:36Speaker 7: We produce the games ourselves, so that's why.
- 30:40Speaker 5: We promote the Westlake, like.
- 30:42Speaker 7: Travis, the Chaparral TV broadcast group takes care of that,
- 30:46Speaker 7: and then our crew will be out at Dragon Stadium
- 30:49Speaker 7: for Stony Point Cedar Ridge.
- 30:50Speaker 5: But there are other options.
- 30:51Speaker 7: We're working to deal with Dripping Springs to try to
- 30:54Speaker 7: get those games streamed, Bob Shelton Stadium, McCallum. So, yeah,
- 30:59Speaker 7: we're just trying to increase the menu over on KXN +.
- 31:03Speaker 1: No doubt about it. Hey, Rod, thanks for the time.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Appreciate it. And see you at the stadium on Saturday.
- 31:10Speaker 5: Thanks, Craig. Take care. All right.
- 31:11Speaker 1: That's Roger Wallace, KXN.
- 31:13Speaker 2: And again, yeah, should be a good game tonight, Hutto
- 31:16Speaker 2: and Rouse. And then tomorrow, unbeaten Cedar Ridge taking on
- 31:21Speaker 2: Stony Point. That's on KXN Plus, but also on KXN
- 31:25Speaker 2: Plus is, yes, Westlake Lake, Travis Battle of the Lakes.
- 31:28Speaker 1: That'll be on as well.
- 31:30Speaker 6: All right.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Coming up, Inconceivable here on a Thursday on Sports Radio
- 31:34Speaker 2: AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Second
- 31:41Speaker 2: hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM, 13
- 31:43Speaker 2: under the zone. Craig Way alongside the producer, Jay Kerman.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Coming up in a few minutes, we'll talk baseball. Gene Watson,
- 31:49Speaker 2: our MLB insider, will join us. But let's jump into
- 31:51Speaker 2: the NFL now. It just depends on how you look
- 31:55Speaker 2: at it, right? Glass half full, glass half empty. Last
- 31:58Speaker 2: two weeks, it's been half full for the Texans. They've
- 32:01Speaker 2: gone from 0-4 to 2-4.
- 32:02Speaker 1: The Cowboys? Half empty.
- 32:05Speaker 5: Half empty.
- 32:06Speaker 1: It's gone from 2-2 to 2-4.
- 32:08Speaker 2: They both have the same record, but they've arrived at
- 32:10Speaker 2: it differently. So D'Amico was asked, first of all, hey,
- 32:15Speaker 2: how about your quarterback?
- 32:16Speaker 1: C.J. Stroud, you got AFC Player of the Week honors.
- 32:19Speaker 8: That is really rewarding for C.J. to get that Player
- 32:22Speaker 8: of the Week. It's rewarding in the sense of, you know,
- 32:24Speaker 8: everyone seeing it across the NFL of what he's been doing,
- 32:28Speaker 8: not just us, me talking about it all the time
- 32:30Speaker 8: of how well he's been having an off-season training camp
- 32:34Speaker 8: and all the way now to the start of the season,
- 32:36Speaker 8: it's been.
- 32:37Speaker 1: That way, right?
- 32:38Speaker 8: He's been doing a great job since he's been back,
- 32:40Speaker 8: and he's done a great job leading us in the
- 32:42Speaker 8: games as well. So I'm happy that he's able to
- 32:45Speaker 8: get that national recognition that he truly deserves.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Is the reason or part of the reason for why
- 32:51Speaker 2: the things are working out for Stroud the fact that
- 32:54Speaker 2: he's been more hands-on with the offensive coordinator, Nick Caley?
- 32:57Speaker 8: Nick and CJ's process hasn't changed. They've been in communication.
- 33:00Speaker 8: I mean, last year they were in communication on things
- 33:03Speaker 8: that CJ, like any offensive coordinator, when you're calling plays,
- 33:06Speaker 8: you have to call plays that the quarterback likes.
- 33:09Speaker 1: So they've always.
- 33:10Speaker 8: Had that consistent communication.
- 33:12Speaker 1: When it comes to that. Okay.
- 33:14Speaker 2: The wide receiver room is getting healthier now, and there's
- 33:18Speaker 2: a benefit, obviously, of that configuration.
- 33:21Speaker 8: The benefit of our wide receiver room is we're going
- 33:23Speaker 8: to put stress on defenses. Who do you want to...
- 33:26Speaker 8: you know, put special attention to. Well, whoever you want to,
- 33:30Speaker 8: whoever gets that special attention, we have other guys who
- 33:33Speaker 8: are capable of making plays. So it's credit to the
- 33:36Speaker 8: guys that we have in that room and what they've
- 33:38Speaker 8: done throughout their career, what they've done this year. Like
- 33:41Speaker 8: all those guys have made plays for us in the
- 33:43Speaker 8: wide receiver room. So I see it as a strength,
- 33:47Speaker 8: a true strength of ours. And I see us really
- 33:49Speaker 8: being able to, you know, press the tempo and really
- 33:52Speaker 8: put defenses in a bind.
- 33:54Speaker 2: And then, here they are playing the New York Giants.
- 33:58Speaker 2: And anybody that saw that game saw J.J. McCarthy come
- 34:01Speaker 2: off the bench. And all of a sudden, the Giants
- 34:05Speaker 2: offense was alive and well. And he nearly brought them
- 34:09Speaker 2: back from down 34-10 in the fourth quarter to the
- 34:12Speaker 2: Saints to a victory.
- 34:14Speaker 1: They didn't win, but.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Suffice to say, everybody knew, yeah, McCarthy's going to get
- 34:18Speaker 2: the start. He's going to have the opportunity. So, D'Amico
- 34:22Speaker 2: was asked, does anything change now facing J.J. McCarthy instead
- 34:26Speaker 2: of Jameis Winston?
- 34:27Speaker 8: For us, it really doesn't matter who plays quarterback. For us, defensively,
- 34:31Speaker 8: it's been about our process and how do we do
- 34:35Speaker 8: things that we do the right way and do them
- 34:36Speaker 8: well so whoever's their quarterback doesn't really dictate what we're
- 34:40Speaker 8: going to do defensively it's about us we got to
- 34:42Speaker 8: play better defensively because it wasn't wasn't good enough as
- 34:45Speaker 8: our in our last.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Outing okay all right uh and a reminder on the
- 34:49Speaker 2: program change here the texans can normally hurt on 1300
- 34:52Speaker 2: on sunday you'll be on 103.1 fm because we have
- 34:56Speaker 2: the texas women's basketball game against defending national champion UCLA.
- 35:01Speaker 1: So it's.
- 35:02Speaker 2: On 103.1 FM, Austin's 80 station, to listen to that matchup.
- 35:07Speaker 5: All right.
- 35:08Speaker 2: We know the Cowboys are going to be playing the
- 35:10Speaker 2: Eagles on Monday night, and that'll be on 98.1 FM KVET.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Brian Schottenheimer trying to get his guys configured. This was
- 35:16Speaker 2: just a little while ago at a media availability, and
- 35:18Speaker 2: he was asked to speak to the fact that People
- 35:24Speaker 2: have to rely on one another when you face that adversity.
- 35:27Speaker 2: It's been a lot of talk about that down here
- 35:29Speaker 2: in Austin with regard to the Longhorns. What about the Cowboys?
- 35:31Speaker 2: Who does Shoddy speak to when adversity strikes?
- 35:35Speaker 9: It's different, you know, for me, a lot of different things.
- 35:37Speaker 9: I talk to my pastor a lot. I talk to Dr.
- 35:39Speaker 9: Tony Evans. You guys know my faith is so important
- 35:42Speaker 9: and God is so good to me and I'm overly blessed.
- 35:46Speaker 1: He kind of keeps me grounded in a good way.
- 35:49Speaker 9: There's a group here by the name of O2X, where
- 35:53Speaker 9: some of their leadership guys, former Navy SEALs that have
- 35:56Speaker 9: seen way worse things than I have in battle. They
- 36:00Speaker 9: talked to me about staying consistent with your anchors in life,
- 36:07Speaker 9: which is my faith in my family. And then of course,
- 36:10Speaker 9: there's a lot of people in the industry I talk to,
- 36:12Speaker 9: Bill Cower, people reach out. And I've been the guy
- 36:16Speaker 9: that You know, when someone's going through tough times, I
- 36:19Speaker 9: try to reach out because I know this is not
- 36:22Speaker 9: just solely happening to us. You know, you talk to
- 36:25Speaker 9: people around the league, you know, talk to guys like
- 36:27Speaker 9: Dan Quint, you know, and this is a tough profession
- 36:30Speaker 9: for tough people. And that's why I know I'm built
- 36:32Speaker 9: to handle it.
- 36:34Speaker 2: All right. So is he built and better yet, is
- 36:38Speaker 2: his offense built to run the ball better than they've
- 36:41Speaker 2: been doing of late?
- 36:42Speaker 1: The more you run it, the better. you feel.
- 36:45Speaker 9: You figure out combination blocks and things like that. I
- 36:48Speaker 9: will say early on in most of our games, we've
- 36:50Speaker 9: not run it as well as we're capable of. And
- 36:53Speaker 9: there's been times where, again, as the head coach and
- 36:55Speaker 9: the play caller, I have to make the decision of, okay,
- 36:58Speaker 9: the clock says X, we're down.
- 37:01Speaker 1: X, what is it? All right, it's time to go.
- 37:04Speaker 9: And so those are decisions that we discuss and we
- 37:07Speaker 9: make those decisions. But You know, it starts with just
- 37:09Speaker 9: letting these guys get into a groove. Let these guys
- 37:12Speaker 9: get bats at the plate, if you will. And, you know,
- 37:16Speaker 9: that's a big part. But the negative runs, you know,
- 37:18Speaker 9: have to... We got to clean those up. There's too
- 37:20Speaker 9: many negative runs.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Okay.
- 37:23Speaker 2: And then he was asked, where do you... At what
- 37:26Speaker 2: point is there a number deficit on the scoreboard where
- 37:29Speaker 2: you're kind of, if not abandoning the run, really ramping
- 37:32Speaker 2: up throwing the football more?
- 37:34Speaker 1: It depends on the game. I mean, it depends. You're
- 37:36Speaker 1: out there. You're kind of watching. You're seeing.
- 37:38Speaker 9: you know, okay, how's, how's this game unfolding? What's the
- 37:40Speaker 9: play clock look like? I mean, teams are obviously trying
- 37:43Speaker 9: to keep the ball away from us. That's the plan.
- 37:44Speaker 9: They want to try to limit our ops because they
- 37:47Speaker 9: know how talented we are and how, how explosive we
- 37:49Speaker 9: can be.
- 37:50Speaker 1: And so I don't think there's a magic number.
- 37:52Speaker 9: I think it's more each one, each game, each situation
- 37:55Speaker 9: is different. And, um, speaking this last game again, I
- 37:59Speaker 9: felt like, you know, it was the right thing to
- 38:01Speaker 9: do because we had to, when we were down 17,
- 38:03Speaker 9: we had to go a little bit and, um, I
- 38:06Speaker 9: felt like that was the best chance to get us
- 38:09Speaker 9: back into the game.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Okay, and so what that also means is, what are
- 38:14Speaker 2: you going to do to try to get George Pickens
- 38:17Speaker 2: going again, since you need to get some offense and
- 38:19Speaker 2: you need to get him involved in that passing game?
- 38:21Speaker 9: Again, I think GP is one of those guys where
- 38:24Speaker 9: I don't ever see him really affected in terms of
- 38:27Speaker 9: the emotion. Does he get the ball? Does he not
- 38:29Speaker 9: get the ball? These guys play a lot of snaps.
- 38:32Speaker 9: I think part of it is us rotating those guys through,
- 38:34Speaker 9: but He needs to understand that he impacts us in
- 38:38Speaker 9: the running game as well. And, you know, he's got
- 38:40Speaker 9: to do the same thing in the run game, picking
- 38:43Speaker 9: up safeties and blocking corners, just like Javante does picking
- 38:47Speaker 9: up blitzes so he can catch balls. And that's part
- 38:50Speaker 9: of the team first mindset. And GP does understand that. And,
- 38:53Speaker 9: you know, when he's going, they're going to play soft
- 38:57Speaker 9: to his side. When he's not going, then the safeties
- 38:59Speaker 9: get pretty good runs at our backs.
- 39:01Speaker 1: And that's got to improve.
- 39:02Speaker 2: All right, we'll hear more from both of those head
- 39:04Speaker 2: coaches coming up next hour. Up next, a shift to
- 39:07Speaker 2: baseball and a preview of the World Series. Gene Watson
- 39:10Speaker 2: joins us next on 13 Under the Zone. It is
- 39:16Speaker 2: time to preview the World Series. And to do that,
- 39:22Speaker 2: we're glad to have him with us. And hopefully we've
- 39:25Speaker 2: been able to extricate him from the depths of depression
- 39:29Speaker 2: of that... heartbreaking loss for the Fighting Irish in Notre Dame.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Gene Watson joins us now. Hey, listen, cowboy, I'm with you. A,
- 39:40Speaker 2: there should have been a penalty call. B, even without that,
- 39:43Speaker 2: they should have one second left on the clock. I'm
- 39:46Speaker 2: going there with you on that. Not to rekindle anything
- 39:49Speaker 2: painful for you there. maybe, maybe one of the.
- 39:52Speaker 6: Worst Saturdays I've had in my life, relatively speaking.
- 39:55Speaker 1: But, um, cause you were at the Texas.
- 39:58Speaker 6: I would have to say, yeah. And then went into
- 40:01Speaker 6: watch that game. But you know what? If, if, if
- 40:04Speaker 6: they have the team, both of them, if they have
- 40:06Speaker 6: the character, they're going to find a way to pull
- 40:09Speaker 6: themselves out of this and they'll be playing in December
- 40:11Speaker 6: and play off. And so sometimes these losses can, can
- 40:15Speaker 6: move you to greater depths and, uh, and turn you
- 40:18Speaker 6: into the team that you were supposed to be in
- 40:20Speaker 6: the first place. So I don't get too worked up
- 40:22Speaker 6: about it.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and I would say this too.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Notre Dame's two most difficult remaining games are both in
- 40:29Speaker 2: South Bend. Miami, which you're planning to be at next week,
- 40:31Speaker 2: if I remember. And then the other one is SMU,
- 40:35Speaker 2: who's pretty good. But both those games are in South Bend.
- 40:39Speaker 2: They're handling their business on that. Like you said, it's
- 40:41Speaker 2: going to take care of themselves. They're going to be
- 40:42Speaker 2: in the playoff. Anyway, Longhorns have a steeper hill to climb,
- 40:46Speaker 2: but are not by any means out of the race yet.
- 40:48Speaker 2: They've just got, as Spike Dykes would say, they've got
- 40:51Speaker 2: some doing to do.
- 40:52Speaker 6: Well, the last five losses that Notre Dame has had
- 40:55Speaker 6: have just been gut-wrenching. In the last two, the game
- 40:59Speaker 6: in Provo Saturday night and then the game against... Texas
- 41:03Speaker 6: A & M on what should have been a hold call. But,
- 41:07Speaker 6: you know, my problem with all of this, and I
- 41:11Speaker 6: know we're here to talk baseball, is like you're saying
- 41:14Speaker 6: don't leave it in the hands of the ref at
- 41:15Speaker 6: the end of the game is like saying that the
- 41:17Speaker 6: 112th play of the game means less than the first
- 41:19Speaker 6: play of the game. And it's all encompassing. It doesn't matter.
- 41:23Speaker 6: When it happens, it happens, and sometimes.
- 41:24Speaker 5: It's not right.
- 41:25Speaker 6: But, again, your team's character will always come out in
- 41:28Speaker 6: the end. So we'll see where it goes.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Well, and to weave that into baseball– the same corollary applies,
- 41:34Speaker 2: doesn't it, Gino? If the tying run is at third
- 41:36Speaker 2: with two outs, and I'm not going to say a
- 41:40Speaker 2: pitch is called a ball on strike because we have
- 41:42Speaker 2: the ABS to settle that, but if it's a check swing,
- 41:47Speaker 2: if the umpire calls it a strike, because it says
- 41:50Speaker 2: he went around when he didn't, or in the minds
- 41:53Speaker 2: of the offensive team didn't, like you say, it's leaving
- 41:57Speaker 2: it in the hands of the umpire at that point,
- 41:58Speaker 2: isn't it?
- 41:59Speaker 6: Yeah, and I mean, man, if you could go back
- 42:02Speaker 6: over the course of history, and I'll go back to 2014,
- 42:05Speaker 6: Game 5, when we had a pitch call up here.
- 42:09Speaker 6: If you have ABS, now Lorenzo Cain is up with
- 42:12Speaker 6: the bases loaded. Who knows where that goes? But thank
- 42:16Speaker 6: gosh we have it now. The technology has been incredible.
- 42:19Speaker 6: I was pretty critical of it early on. I think
- 42:22Speaker 6: everything that they've done to make the game better, when
- 42:24Speaker 6: you're talking about a 13th, billion-dollar industry. I think everything
- 42:28Speaker 6: they've done has been magnificent.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Let me ask you this.
- 42:30Speaker 2: There's been some talk about it, and I think some experimentation.
- 42:33Speaker 1: You can clarify this for me.
- 42:35Speaker 2: There's been some experimentation in a similar fashion with check swings.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Do you see any future in that, or is it
- 42:43Speaker 2: too nebulous?
- 42:44Speaker 6: Really? 100%. They're already doing it in the Fall League.
- 42:46Speaker 6: They did it in the Fall League last year, and
- 42:50Speaker 6: it really is. I mean, anybody that's ever umpired, and
- 42:52Speaker 6: I've umpired at the high school level. I did a
- 42:55Speaker 6: couple of dsl games in the winter league last year
- 42:58Speaker 6: with our kids and man it's a tough job it
- 43:01Speaker 6: is not easy and god bless the people that have
- 43:04Speaker 6: to do it in our youth world right now with
- 43:07Speaker 6: the parents and the way they are uh but it's
- 43:09Speaker 6: not an easy job but but but again if you
- 43:12Speaker 6: have the technology to get the calls right with um
- 43:17Speaker 6: today's game and everything that's on the line even with
- 43:21Speaker 6: one second left on a pass interference call on the
- 43:23Speaker 6: last play of the game you get.
- 43:24Speaker 1: The did you really put on the gear down in
- 43:28Speaker 1: the Dominican?
- 43:30Speaker 6: No, not the gear, down the line, first baseline. And
- 43:33Speaker 6: I'll tell you a story. One ball went right over my.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Head, and that was ballgame for me.
- 43:37Speaker 6: Had about 109 miles an hour off the bat.
- 43:40Speaker 1: You had enough.
- 43:41Speaker 5: That was it.
- 43:43Speaker 6: These are 17-year-olds.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt. Gene Watson's with us here. All right,
- 43:49Speaker 2: let's talk about these two teams. We're going to have,
- 43:51Speaker 2: for the first time, Since our pal, Keith Moreland, was
- 43:55Speaker 2: playing for the Phillies in 1980 and went to the
- 43:58Speaker 2: plate as a pinch hitter against the Royals. I think
- 44:01Speaker 2: it was game three, I think he told me. It
- 44:03Speaker 2: was either game three or game four. We've got two
- 44:06Speaker 2: teams who have never won a World Series who are
- 44:09Speaker 2: going to face each other in the World Series. And
- 44:13Speaker 2: I've kind of joked with you about this, that some
- 44:15Speaker 2: folks had referred to Tampa Bay as Milwaukee Light, which
- 44:19Speaker 2: to me sounds like a beer, but saying that they
- 44:22Speaker 2: were a lot like the Brewers. Just how closely resemblant
- 44:27Speaker 2: are these two teams to one another, the Brewers and
- 44:31Speaker 2: the Jays?
- 44:32Speaker 6: It's incredible. And Matt Arnold, the president of the Milwaukee Brewers,
- 44:36Speaker 6: went to Milwaukee from Tampa. Matt and I actually did
- 44:40Speaker 6: the James Shields and Wade Davis deal in 2012 at
- 44:43Speaker 6: the winter meetings. And I'm so incredibly happy for him.
- 44:47Speaker 6: Eric Neander, the president. And what I'll say about both organizations,
- 44:51Speaker 6: and I was asked this question last night, who are
- 44:54Speaker 6: you pulling for? I'm happy for both these organizations because
- 44:57Speaker 6: their leadership, number one, they care about people and they
- 45:01Speaker 6: treat their people well. Number two, they're very, very high
- 45:05Speaker 6: volume scouting and analytics. And so they understand even in
- 45:09Speaker 6: smaller markets, the value of both. They have created great
- 45:13Speaker 6: cultures for And they have both of them have great managers,
- 45:16Speaker 6: Pat Murphy and Kevin Cash. I saw I saw Kevin
- 45:20Speaker 6: Cash playing a ball for the Dunedin Blue Jays. And
- 45:23Speaker 6: I still give Pat Murphy a hard time every year
- 45:25Speaker 6: in 1988 when his Notre Dame Irish came into St.
- 45:29Speaker 6: Edwards and we knocked him off. And every time I
- 45:31Speaker 6: see him, he says, it's the worst loss of my career.
- 45:34Speaker 6: And so just, you know, when you're watching these teams
- 45:36Speaker 6: and it is competition, there's a lot of teams you
- 45:38Speaker 6: don't pull for. These are certainly two of the classiest organizations.
- 45:42Speaker 6: They've done it right. They're very good to their people
- 45:45Speaker 6: to have great leadership. And, and I'm just so excited
- 45:48Speaker 6: for this series. This is going to be one where
- 45:50Speaker 6: you'll watch every pitch because it's going to be baseball
- 45:53Speaker 6: and you have two very good rotations, two very good
- 45:56Speaker 6: defensive clubs. Runs are going to be at a premium
- 46:00Speaker 6: and it's going to be must watch TV for at
- 46:03Speaker 6: least six games, I believe.
- 46:05Speaker 2: And, and, um, You know, I tell people, a lot
- 46:09Speaker 2: of people say, well, aren't you, who are you rooting for?
- 46:12Speaker 2: Aren't you brokenhearted that the Dodgers didn't get in? And
- 46:14Speaker 2: I said, no, I was a little disappointed. It's been
- 46:16Speaker 2: a great run. I mean, I went 32 years as
- 46:18Speaker 2: a fan between championships. I count myself lucky. There have
- 46:22Speaker 2: been three in the last six years. And I think
- 46:24Speaker 2: they'll be back depending on what happens with the game future-wise.
- 46:27Speaker 2: But I said, I have no beef. with either of
- 46:31Speaker 2: these ball clubs. And I think that's the way a
- 46:33Speaker 2: lot of fans feel. They have no beef with the
- 46:36Speaker 2: Brewers who haven't been in a World Series in 44 years.
- 46:38Speaker 1: And they have no real beef with Tampa Bay.
- 46:40Speaker 2: The only beef some folks could have with it is
- 46:42Speaker 2: that both World Series at both sides are going to
- 46:45Speaker 2: be playing indoors unless the weather's really nice in Wisconsin
- 46:47Speaker 2: and they open it up. But other than that, we're
- 46:50Speaker 2: going to have good baseball, right?
- 46:52Speaker 6: Really good baseball in two very loud stadiums, two really
- 46:56Speaker 6: passionate fan bases. And again, they're just it's going to
- 46:59Speaker 6: be clean baseball. And, you know, I lean Milwaukee in
- 47:05Speaker 6: six games because of their bullpen, because they can manufacture
- 47:10Speaker 6: runs a little bit easier. Where Tampa bunts a lot,
- 47:14Speaker 6: they've got very low contact rates. They're one of the
- 47:16Speaker 6: lowest contact rate teams in all of baseball. They're kind
- 47:19Speaker 6: of a little bit more reliant on the long ball
- 47:21Speaker 6: with Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz. And so, with the
- 47:26Speaker 6: frontline pitching that the Brewers have and the depth of
- 47:29Speaker 6: their bullpen, I think it's going to be a little
- 47:31Speaker 6: bit harder to manufacture that home run. And one of
- 47:34Speaker 6: the best stories is Jake Bowers. This is a guy
- 47:37Speaker 6: that was retiring from the game of baseball. His wife
- 47:41Speaker 6: found out he was pregnant. He decided he'd go back
- 47:43Speaker 6: and play because he needed health insurance. And and to
- 47:48Speaker 6: do what he's done, and there's a lot to be
- 47:50Speaker 6: said about just the freedom in coming back and playing
- 47:53Speaker 6: for the right reasons and taking the pressure off, and
- 47:56Speaker 6: I think that's what you've seen, but it's going to
- 47:58Speaker 6: be a very colorful series. I think runs are going
- 48:00Speaker 6: to be at a premium. I think you're going to
- 48:03Speaker 6: see both teams put the game in motion a lot.
- 48:08Speaker 6: I don't think Tampa, I don't think they've been thrown
- 48:10Speaker 6: out at all in the playoffs, and if Milwaukee's been
- 48:12Speaker 6: thrown out, it hasn't been that much, so William Contreras
- 48:17Speaker 6: and Liam Hicks are going to have a tough battle
- 48:19Speaker 6: of controlling the running game. But anytime the opportunity exists
- 48:23Speaker 6: to move runovers, to hit runners over, I think you're
- 48:26Speaker 6: going to see that happen in this series.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Talking baseball with Gene Watson as we preview the World
- 48:30Speaker 2: Series here on 1300. I know it doesn't boil down
- 48:33Speaker 2: to this, but this is one of those fun little
- 48:35Speaker 2: numbers that I looked at and wanted to get your
- 48:38Speaker 2: thoughts on this. The top five hitters in the game
- 48:43Speaker 2: this season are with the, and I don't mean batting average,
- 48:48Speaker 2: the highest average bat speed, okay? Number five, O'Neal Cruz
- 48:54Speaker 2: of the Pirates. Number four, Cam Smith. Number three, Nick Kurtz.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Number two, Jordan Walker. And number one at 79.4 miles
- 49:04Speaker 2: per hour is Junior Caminero. In baseball, we know who
- 49:08Speaker 2: has the highest fastball velocity. I'll just say there's a
- 49:11Speaker 2: tie at fourth between Jared Jones and Uri Perez. There's
- 49:14Speaker 2: a tie at second between Bubba Chandler and Hunter Green.
- 49:18Speaker 2: But number one, and it's not even close. is Jacob
- 49:20Speaker 2: Mizorowski at 100.6 average points. Fastball variety. So, you know,
- 49:27Speaker 2: we like to talk about football, about unstoppable force and
- 49:30Speaker 2: immovable logic. And I know the old saw is great
- 49:33Speaker 2: pitching beats great inning. But it is kind of fun
- 49:35Speaker 2: to think about the guy with the highest bat speed
- 49:38Speaker 2: against the guy with the highest average fastball, isn't it?
- 49:41Speaker 6: Well, and for all the changes you've noticed in the game,
- 49:44Speaker 6: the old timers will tell you that to win in October,
- 49:48Speaker 6: you got to have two things. you got to have
- 49:50Speaker 6: power arms and you got to have power bats and
- 49:52Speaker 6: it's going to be a super matchup. And both of
- 49:55Speaker 6: them take a lot of pride in their game. So
- 49:59Speaker 6: they know what's on the line. And I think that
- 50:02Speaker 6: it's going to be, you know, a small town kid from,
- 50:05Speaker 6: you know, Missouri and a kid from a small town,
- 50:09Speaker 6: the Dominican Republic, it's going to be, you know, it's
- 50:12Speaker 6: going to be a great matchup to watch and we're
- 50:13Speaker 6: going to get to see a few of them. And
- 50:16Speaker 6: it's just great for the game globally. It just, it
- 50:18Speaker 6: speaks to, you know, the innocence of the game, and
- 50:21Speaker 6: it's going to be really, really fun to watch.
- 50:24Speaker 2: Gino, let's get your thoughts on the teams that have
- 50:27Speaker 2: the edges in individual categories. First of all, starting pitching.
- 50:33Speaker 2: Edge to which side? Oh, you know, Drew Rasmussen, Peralta,
- 50:37Speaker 2: and Nick Martinez are... you know, arguably three of the
- 50:40Speaker 2: best arms you could ever hope for. I, I, you know,
- 50:43Speaker 2: Robert Gasser, the university of Houston product in the three hole,
- 50:47Speaker 2: you know, it's, it's not power stuff, but it's a
- 50:49Speaker 2: double plus change up. I would probably give the advantage to, uh,
- 50:54Speaker 2: to Tampa Bay with Rasmussen Peralta and Martinez, but here's
- 50:58Speaker 2: the other entity.
- 50:59Speaker 6: And you know how I feel about this. Um, Milwaukee
- 51:02Speaker 6: has been sitting for eight days and that's a lot. Uh,
- 51:06Speaker 6: Tampa's coming out of a six-game series with a three-day rest,
- 51:10Speaker 6: and you never really lose your edge. And we've talked
- 51:12Speaker 6: about it 100 times on this show about what the
- 51:15Speaker 6: layoff can do. The fact that both teams are going
- 51:18Speaker 6: to have to manufacture runs because of the starting pitching,
- 51:22Speaker 6: where Tampa could really catch a break is if they
- 51:24Speaker 6: jumped on Mizorowski early and got an early lead. But
- 51:28Speaker 6: Milwaukee's been one of the better teams at coming back
- 51:30Speaker 6: when they fall behind in baseball this year. But I
- 51:33Speaker 6: would lead Tampa Bay when it comes to the rotation.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Better closer, Brian Baker for Tampa Bay, Trevor McGill for Milwaukee.
- 51:42Speaker 6: Interesting, because when you think about it, they're not your
- 51:44Speaker 6: prototypical lockdown, lights out, Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman. They're not
- 51:50Speaker 6: those type of closers. These guys have kind of all
- 51:53Speaker 6: both evolved into that role and have just been high performers.
- 51:57Speaker 6: And so I really think this is kind of a
- 51:59Speaker 6: draw when you talk about those two.
- 52:01Speaker 2: And I know you feel it's kind of a draw
- 52:04Speaker 2: offensively in the way that they create runs. Tampa Bay
- 52:06Speaker 2: has more power, but Milwaukee does such a fabulous job. And,
- 52:10Speaker 2: you know, again, yeah, I wanted my team to win,
- 52:13Speaker 2: but they didn't. I had a smile on my face
- 52:15Speaker 2: watching former Longhorn David Hamilton do his stuff. for them
- 52:20Speaker 2: and and the way that Milwaukee moves runners and advances
- 52:24Speaker 2: running old school Augie Garrido style baseball and gets those
- 52:27Speaker 2: guys in Tampa Bay does it as well but like
- 52:30Speaker 2: you said they got a little more power and then
- 52:32Speaker 2: a little more advancement coming from the Brewers isn't it.
- 52:35Speaker 6: And the Brewers bullpen as a whole when you talk
- 52:37Speaker 6: about Aaron Ashby the Kansas City product who could be
- 52:40Speaker 6: a starter for a lot of teams D.L. Hall a
- 52:44Speaker 6: light south setup man Abner Uribe a who's one of
- 52:47Speaker 6: the better power arms in the game, Jojo Romero, one
- 52:50Speaker 6: of the more elite left-handers. The guy I want you
- 52:52Speaker 6: to watch, Craig, this World Series. I've believed in this
- 52:57Speaker 6: kid since I saw him in the minor leagues. He's
- 52:59Speaker 6: one of the most balanced players in all the game
- 53:02Speaker 6: of baseball. I thought that he had a chance to
- 53:04Speaker 6: win a batting title and a gold glove. Watch Bryce Terang.
- 53:07Speaker 6: This guy, if he breaks out, it is going to
- 53:10Speaker 6: be a huge, huge lift for the Milwaukee Brewers. And
- 53:13Speaker 6: this has always kind of been a below-the-radar, star-powered-type player,
- 53:18Speaker 6: and this is his chance on a big stage to
- 53:20Speaker 6: show that.
- 53:21Speaker 2: You know, every time either Terang or Bauer came to
- 53:23Speaker 2: the plate, I looked at Linden and said, here comes
- 53:26Speaker 2: a Dodger killer. And they were in both cases. And
- 53:30Speaker 2: Hamilton was a big part of it as well in
- 53:31Speaker 2: the last game. Final analysis, like you said, two great
- 53:34Speaker 2: managers as well. So what turns this series one way
- 53:40Speaker 2: or the other?
- 53:41Speaker 6: Man, I think if you watch, if Milwaukee's bullpen starts
- 53:46Speaker 6: to take dominance, I think that it's going to be really,
- 53:48Speaker 6: really hard for Tampa to, They are a great team,
- 53:54Speaker 6: and they're actually the more experienced team. They've been down
- 53:57Speaker 6: this road a couple of times. Milwaukee, it's just been
- 54:00Speaker 6: such a gradual build with all their great matchups versus
- 54:04Speaker 6: the Dodgers. But if Tampa Bay wants to have a
- 54:06Speaker 6: chance to win this series, they got to go into
- 54:09Speaker 6: Milwaukee and get one and try to win one of
- 54:12Speaker 6: the two games and come back to Tampa with some
- 54:15Speaker 6: momentum because that rotation– that they have is really, really tough.
- 54:20Speaker 6: And if they can get to Mizorowski and Logan Henderson
- 54:23Speaker 6: and get one of those games, they're going to have
- 54:25Speaker 6: a chance. But all in all, I think this is
- 54:28Speaker 6: the Brewers in six games overall.
- 54:30Speaker 2: Okay, final thing here, and it doesn't have to do
- 54:33Speaker 2: with the series. I'm reading a lot of stuff that
- 54:35Speaker 2: says that despite the fact that the final three teams
- 54:39Speaker 2: left standing, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, and Milwaukee, are not big
- 54:43Speaker 2: market teams, despite all of that, and despite the fact
- 54:47Speaker 2: that whoever wins is not going to be a big
- 54:49Speaker 2: market team. That, the lockout, the shutdown, is inevitable. I've
- 54:55Speaker 2: heard and read that, and I want to get your
- 54:57Speaker 2: thoughts on whether you think it might be inevitable. And two,
- 55:00Speaker 2: here's the other thing I'm reading, that there is going
- 55:03Speaker 2: to be like this massive crush on, of teams trying
- 55:09Speaker 2: to get the roster stocked with free agents before the
- 55:13Speaker 2: shutdown happens? A, do you see, are the storm clouds
- 55:18Speaker 2: looking like we're headed.
- 55:19Speaker 1: For the shutdown?
- 55:19Speaker 2: And B, will we see teams racing to try to
- 55:23Speaker 2: get free agents signed or make deals before the shutdown happens?
- 55:30Speaker 6: I think there is going to be a lockout. I
- 55:32Speaker 6: think the reason there's going to be a lockout is
- 55:34Speaker 6: the number one hangup is the salary cap and until
- 55:40Speaker 6: teams start, until both sides start to begin that they're
- 55:43Speaker 6: gonna lose money, I don't think that it even, it
- 55:46Speaker 6: moves off the salary cap. I think that we are
- 55:51Speaker 6: gonna see a lot of movement early. It's not a
- 55:54Speaker 6: great free agent class at all. Some of the free
- 55:57Speaker 6: agents are a little bit older in years. You know,
- 56:01Speaker 6: you had a situation last time where the union voted
- 56:03Speaker 6: against the executive committee which is the first time that's
- 56:06Speaker 6: ever happened. Well, the game has gotten a little bit older.
- 56:10Speaker 6: And when you talk about a lockout, you're talking about
- 56:14Speaker 6: it truly affecting like the top 2% of the players.
- 56:17Speaker 6: And so I think that there's a situation where the
- 56:21Speaker 6: ownership side knows that the union is soft. I think
- 56:23Speaker 6: the union is gonna really have to come together because
- 56:27Speaker 6: it is getting older. And again, voting against the executive
- 56:30Speaker 6: committee last time, I do think you're gonna see a
- 56:33Speaker 6: flurry of teams trying to get deals done because none
- 56:36Speaker 6: of these players know what the economic system is going
- 56:39Speaker 6: to look like when you come out of it from
- 56:41Speaker 6: free agency in years to arbitration in years. I do
- 56:46Speaker 6: think that there's a chance that there's going to be
- 56:48Speaker 6: a floor as well as a cap, and that's going
- 56:50Speaker 6: to impact a lot of financial contracts. So it's going
- 56:55Speaker 6: to be really, really interesting. I think we're going to
- 56:58Speaker 6: have an incredible World Series with two great teams, And
- 57:02Speaker 6: when you think about, you know, everybody says, well, two
- 57:04Speaker 6: of the three lowest payrolls. Well, that's kind of the
- 57:06Speaker 6: problem is these two teams would not be able to
- 57:10Speaker 6: keep these players for very long because they're going to
- 57:13Speaker 6: start making more money and long contracts and lots of years.
- 57:15Speaker 6: And that's where the problem lies. It's not that, you know,
- 57:19Speaker 6: the two world championships I've been a part of were
- 57:22Speaker 6: very small market, low payroll clubs, but we were unable
- 57:26Speaker 6: to keep those teams together. And I think that's where
- 57:29Speaker 6: the problem lies overall. And so I think we're going
- 57:32Speaker 6: to have a great World Series. I think we're going
- 57:33Speaker 6: to have a mad dash on December 1st. And then
- 57:36Speaker 6: hopefully cooler heads can prevail and we'll get something worked
- 57:39Speaker 6: out for at least a spring training or shorter spring
- 57:42Speaker 6: training and have a tremendous 2027 season. That's great.
- 57:46Speaker 1: Gino, I appreciate the time. Thank you. Enjoy the fall classic.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Enjoy South Bend.
- 57:52Speaker 2: And we'll visit again next week and see where we
- 57:54Speaker 2: are with this thing, if it's still rolling and the
- 57:58Speaker 2: climactic end of the regular season and the postseason for baseball.
- 58:01Speaker 1: Appreciate the time.
- 58:02Speaker 6: All right, Craig. Thanks so much. Thank you.
- 58:04Speaker 1: You bet. That's Gene Watson, our MLB insider.
- 58:07Speaker 2: Coming up, we're going to hear more from Longhorn's head coach,
- 58:09Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian, when we continue on 13 Under the Zone.
- 58:18Speaker 1: With Billy Joel pressure?
- 58:20Speaker 4: No, I haven't actually.
- 58:21Speaker 1: Oh, it's great.
- 58:22Speaker 5: It's great. Fabulous.
- 58:24Speaker 2: You know, in the right smack dab in the wheelhouse
- 58:27Speaker 2: of MTV at the time.
- 58:28Speaker 5: With the music.
- 58:29Speaker 1: You owe it to yourself. You know, YouTube it sometime. Okay.
- 58:35Speaker 1: It's really, really good.
- 58:36Speaker 2: The Longhorns are trying to get pressure on the quarterback.
- 58:38Speaker 2: That's not easy to do with Trinidad Chambliss. And in fact,
- 58:43Speaker 2: on this morning's Zoom, the media Zoom, Longhorns head coach,
- 58:47Speaker 2: Steve Sarkisian was asked, how has Chambliss been able to
- 58:51Speaker 2: avoid sacks?
- 58:52Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I don't know if you guys have
- 58:54Speaker 4: watched them play, but he's pretty hard to get on
- 58:56Speaker 4: the ground. He's a dynamic playmaker. And it's not always
- 59:01Speaker 4: about him scrambling to run. It's him scrambling to buy
- 59:05Speaker 4: time to create the second play in the passing game,
- 59:08Speaker 4: the explosive plays down the field. And so I think
- 59:11Speaker 4: it's really important that we have really good rush lanes,
- 59:15Speaker 4: that we try to contain him in the pocket. But
- 59:17Speaker 4: he's going to get out of the pocket. I'd love
- 59:19Speaker 4: to say, hey, we're going to come out of this
- 59:20Speaker 4: game for four quarters and he's not going to get out.
- 59:22Speaker 4: He's going to get out. The coverage then has to
- 59:24Speaker 4: do a great job of plastering and staying sticky on
- 59:27Speaker 4: the second play. Um, so all those things have to
- 59:30Speaker 4: work together. Um, but he is a, he's a dynamic
- 59:32Speaker 4: playmaker that way. Um, he's been that way for two
- 59:35Speaker 4: years now since he's been put into the lineup. And
- 59:38Speaker 4: so you, you, you have to, the people that have
- 59:40Speaker 4: defended him the best have tried to minimize and of
- 59:44Speaker 4: him getting out of the pocket, but also not giving
- 59:47Speaker 4: up those, those big, you know, kind of home run
- 59:49Speaker 4: plays on when the first play breaks down and it
- 59:52Speaker 4: goes to the second play.
- 59:53Speaker 2: All right.
- 59:53Speaker 1: Um, next pretty interesting question from our friend Anwar Richardson. Um,
- 59:59Speaker 1: at Orange Bloods.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: And he asked a question with regard to the fact
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: that last year there was Texas sitting at 9-3 and
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: got left out of the playoff. And Sark pointed to,
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: you know, playing a tough team and all this other
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: kind of stuff.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: And then now, you know, here they are with two losses.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: And his thoughts overall, especially with this college football playoff team, uh,
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: coming up, but, but as far as his team is
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: concerned and trying to get things turned around, how about
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: his thoughts on the stakes at hand?
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: No, right now we need to focus on this week, Amar.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: And that's a fair question. I understand that. But I
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: think from an energy standpoint, um, we need to pour
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: into this game. We need to go one to know
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: this week. Um, this is, there's a lot of football
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: left to be played this season. Um, I've never seen
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: the SEC look like this where every team's got a
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: conference loss this early in the year. There's a lot
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: of football left to go. Let's focus on this week.
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: Let's do our best job that we can do to
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: take care of business this week against a very talented
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: top 10 ranked Ole Miss team.
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: Denny was asked, how much does the creativity... of offense
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: being him, especially, you know, now with the team having
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: dropped two games or so, does that mean that he
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: is able to be as creative as he has been
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: in the past?
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: I think offensive creativity is personnel groupings, it's formations, it's
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: motions and shifts, it's schemes. It's how you deploy people
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: formationally to, to try to create leverage in the passing
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: game and, or in the run game, it's timely calls.
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: You know, it's, It's calling things when they don't think
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: you're going to call it and vice versa. You know,
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: I think every year is different. Like, I don't know
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: if I haven't been as creative, but I think the
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: times that I've wanted to be creative, it hasn't worked
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: as well. And that can happen sometimes. You know, it's
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: like you calling around against Ohio State on fourth and one,
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: it doesn't work. Well, that's not being as creative enough.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: If it would have worked, I would have been really creative.
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: So that's kind of the life of a play caller.
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: That's the way it goes. I would say that's the
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: life of a competitor. But at the end of the day,
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: it's my job and our job as a staff to
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: put our players in the best position to be successful.
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: And so we leave no stone unturned. We continue to
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: grind at it to try to find ways to make
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: sure that they can have success when game day rolls around.
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: Then he was asked, you know, here you are at
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: the midway mark of the season. A lot of folks was, oh,
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: you got to change this. You got to change that.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: Can you tweak and adjust things, or are you even
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: able to consider overhauling several things?
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: I think that's kind of, that's a bit difficult to overhaul.
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: I think when you use the word overhaul, that's probably
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: an off-season term in any aspect of your program. It
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: could be academics, it could be your run game, it
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: could be your off-season conditioning program. Like, Overhaul is a
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: really big word. Can you make adjustments? Sure you can, right?
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: And can you make personnel changes? Sure you can. You
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: can do those things, I think, in six days, and
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: you can grow from there. But just to overhaul, like...
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: You know, I know Coach Royal would love this, but, like,
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: we can't come out in the wishbone Saturday night. Like,
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: that's a tough thing to do in a six-day span.
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: But we can make adjustments to what we do schematically
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: in all three phases.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Boy, that would be something if all of a sudden
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: I see him line up the wishbone like that.
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: And then one more from Sark this hour.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: We'll hear more from him as well as previewing tonight's
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: Longhorn Weekly, a segment of that next hour as well.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: But he was asked about freshmen. there have been freshmen
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: like a Jermaine Bishop who has stood out and played well.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: And then there's some freshmen who have practiced well, but
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: they really haven't played much, if at all.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: And he was asked, where have those freshmen grown?
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: I mean, obviously, I think it's clear our confidence in
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: Jermaine Bishop. He's really grown into the role that he
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: has from an offensive perspective. But I've been really impressed
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: by Chris Stewart, Cohen Brown, both those guys, they're contributing
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: on special teams. I see them every day, the way
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: they work in practice. They are, they're definitely showing up
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: in that aspect of it. So I love, love what
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: they're bringing. You know, defensively, when you, when you look
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: at those guys, I see a lot of these guys
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: on the defensive front on scout team, but like I'm
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: seeing strides in Tyler Atkinson, Rocky Cummings, I'm seeing strides
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: in Jamarian Carlton, Um, I'm seeing strides in Tita, uh,
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: and those are just named a few. I'm seeing strides
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: in John Meredith to Ray Davis. Like a lot of
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: these guys are getting better. And I know you, unfortunately
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: you guys don't always get a chance to see them
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: cause they're not, you know, playing every Saturday on the weekend, but,
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: but I see them a lot and I've been impressed
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: with these guys. They work hard, their team committed. Um,
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: They want to be really good, and I appreciate the
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: work ethic that they're bringing every single day. And so
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: that's been really cool to see.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: We'll hear more from Sar coming up next hour, not
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: only from this Thursday media Zoom from this morning, but
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: also a preview of tonight's edition of Longhorn Weekly. We'll
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: be back to wrap up hour number two here on
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: 13 Under the Zone. Third and final hour of the
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: program here. On Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone,
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: Craig Wade joined by the producer, Jay Kerman. We had
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: Roger Wallace on with us in the 2 o'clock hour.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: We were talking Longhorn football and high school football. Gene
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: Watson in the 3 o'clock hour to preview the World Series.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: We're going to hear some more from the head coaches
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: of the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans coming up
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: here in just a few moments. And more from Longhorn's
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: head coach, Steve Sarkeesian. Part of it will be a
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: preview of tonight's Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark and discussing
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: what the message is to the team this week on
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: trying to turn it around. We'll also hear some other
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: comments from Sark from the media Zoom this week. So
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: we'll get to all that coming up in a few minutes.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: Did you watch some NBA last night?
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: Well, no, I watched some NBA highlights last night. I
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: saw the Wizards jump out to 1-0. I watched more
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: NBA on opening night on Tuesday.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Okay, all right.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I've watched the Mavericks be summarily smacked
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: around by the Rockets. They were actually, they were down
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: 37 at one point in the third quarter and came
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: back and cut it to, I think, 16. I know
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: they got within 17, so they shaved 20 points off
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: of that and they ended up, I think, losing by 18, but.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Uh, it's, it's going to take some time for that,
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: for that club to build up a little. Kevin Durant
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: was Kevin Durant. Um, KD had 30 points last night
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: in the game. Now, Cooper Flagg had 32 for the Mavericks.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: He just didn't have much help around him. Um, but, uh, but, uh,
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: Kevin Durant had, uh, 30, 30 last night for the Rockets.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: He was, he was an interesting number.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: Um, Our friend Mark Folliwell, who calls the Mavericks telecast,
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: revealed this at one point in the fourth corner. And
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: I think it was right around the time that KD
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: was checking out the ballgame. He said, Kevin Durant, now
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: you think about it, Kevin's 37. Last year at age 36,
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: he averaged 36 minutes a game. That's a dude still
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: grinding there. 36 minutes per game at age 36 last
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: year for KD. Pretty impressive stuff for him, and he
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: still scored 30 points, and he had eight assists in
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: the game.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: And then, and I didn't stay up for this, but boy,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: did I see the highlights.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: How about what happened last night in L.A. between the
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: Lakers and Golden State? And Luka Doncic was Luka being Luka,
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: but the showdown he had with Yaxel Lindenborg was something,
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: here's a rookie coming in, trash-talking him, telling him he sucks,
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: telling him, you know, he's whiny and all this kind
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: of stuff. Some of those things might be true. It's
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: kind of like the time that the old Cowboys running back,
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: Dwayne Thomas, who was holding out, was quoted as saying
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: that Tom Landry was a plastic man and that Tech
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Schramm was a, senile, deranged, and a liar.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: And Tech said, well, they got two of them right.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: Um, but, uh, anyway, uh, he was in that case of, uh,
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: of Lindenborg, you, you can make, you can make, uh,
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: arguments about Luca and how much he complains about calls
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: or this or that and leans in and draws the
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: foul calls. He's very good at that, but he doesn't suck. And,
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: he had himself a big game last night. So I
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: thought it was pretty interesting, pretty brave stuff coming from
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: a rookie.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: Last night in that.
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: Game brave or dumb yeah you can you can go
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: with it either way he said quote i had a
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: lot of respect for him seeing him kill people all
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: the time but then being in there firsthand watching all
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: the whining and complaining i lost all respect for a
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: man that was awful unquote and look linda borg was
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: trying to get under his skin picking him up 94
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: feet poking prodding and didn't work it didn't work and
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: linda borg was minus 21 in the game.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: Yeah and and he he got called for a foul
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: trying to pick him up 94 feet.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: It was a silly, ridiculous foul.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: But there was another call where, you know, Luka kind
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: of shoved off on him going down the floor, and
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: that went uncalled.
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: Well, and you know, Shea got two or three phantom
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: calls in the fourth quarter against the Spurs.
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: It's hard.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: These guys are good at foul baiting. Right, right. It
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: works that way. So the season is off and rolling
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: there in the NBA.
- 1:09:55Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: Wanted to get back to the NFL now. with the
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: Cowboys and Texans trying to turn it around. The Texans
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: have won back-to-back games. They're now 2-4. Remember, they started
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: 0-3 last year, and then I think, what, they won
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: nine in a row and wound up being a playoff team.
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: They started 0-4 this year. You talk about pushing the
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: envelope on this deal from digging out. They've won back-to-back games.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: They play the Giants this Sunday. And as they have improved,
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: D'Amico Ryans was asked, what still needs to improve on
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: the defensive side of the ball?
- 1:10:29Speaker 8: We got to tackle better to start. Our tackling was
- 1:10:32Speaker 8: not good enough. That has to be picked up. We
- 1:10:35Speaker 8: got to eliminate the leaky yardage when we are breaking
- 1:10:38Speaker 8: on the football. We are running, swarming the ball. Guys,
- 1:10:42Speaker 8: we got to get guys on the ground much quicker.
- 1:10:44Speaker 8: We allow too many leaky yardage there, especially in the
- 1:10:46Speaker 8: running game. Some of the short passes that are caught
- 1:10:49Speaker 8: over the middle of the field, we have to secure
- 1:10:52Speaker 8: those tackles. Right now, there's just way too many missed tackles.
- 1:10:55Speaker 8: Guys are leaving their feet, just poor technique. We got
- 1:10:57Speaker 8: to play with better play style of putting our body
- 1:11:01Speaker 8: on people, wrapping up, securing the fundamentals of tackling since
- 1:11:05Speaker 8: middle school football.
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: You got to put your body on people and wrap up.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: We got to do a better job of that.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: Next, he was asked about Marvin Harrison Jr. Of course,
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: they picked him up in the deal with the Cardinals.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: Will he see some more snaps this week?
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: However many he can handle.
- 1:11:22Speaker 8: Yes, I expect Marvin to get his workload to continue
- 1:11:25Speaker 8: to increase. I thought he got a little bit under
- 1:11:28Speaker 8: 15 reps in the game on Sunday, and he handled
- 1:11:30Speaker 8: all those really well, did a really great job. So
- 1:11:34Speaker 8: he'll continue to get more. One thing I see, Marvin
- 1:11:36Speaker 8: is a very smart guy. He's picked up things very seamlessly,
- 1:11:41Speaker 8: and he's moving around a lot of different places on
- 1:11:44Speaker 8: our offense. Our coaches can put him in a lot
- 1:11:46Speaker 8: of different spots. He's handled himself really well. he'll get
- 1:11:50Speaker 8: more workload.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: And Tank Dell is coming back, you know, coming off injury,
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: and that's a good sign as well. And so what's
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: been his approach to using Dell this week?
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: It's all about, it's a feel. As we get into
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: the game, it's a feel.
- 1:12:07Speaker 8: As I mentioned earlier this week, it's no expectation like
- 1:12:10Speaker 8: Tank has to hit a certain play number. It's, for me, it's,
- 1:12:13Speaker 8: and getting Tank back out there after missing, you know,
- 1:12:16Speaker 8: two years of football, that's the the main thing like
- 1:12:19Speaker 8: him just going out playing ball i don't care how
- 1:12:22Speaker 8: many reps he gets right but i'll have my tankdale
- 1:12:26Speaker 8: jersey on on sunday.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: He's listed as still reserve slash injured semicolon designated for return.
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: Okay yeah they've opened up that practice window and There
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: was lots of talk in the media, C.J. Stroud talking
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: today about how excited he was just to see Tank
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: run out the tunnel.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: Meanwhile, the Cowboys are trying to generate some excitement coming
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: off the back-to-back losses.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: Think about it.
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: They were 2-2 going home to play a winless Tampa
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: Bay team. And I think Brad Sham and Babe Laufenberg
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: put it well. He said they just looked tired.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: And out of gas.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: Kind of reminded me a little bit of the Dodgers
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: in the final two games of the NLCS against the Brewers.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: They just looked spent. uh, from the past couple of seasons.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: In the case of the Cowboys, it's all the travel
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: and going down, uh, and losing the heartbreaker there in
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: Rio to the Ravens and all that other kind of stuff.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: So now they're trying to dig out of it. And, um, uh,
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Brian Schottenheimer was asked about the lack of big plays.
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: They just haven't had many of those lately. And how many,
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: how much of that is tied to lack of protection?
- 1:13:33Speaker 9: We've looked at that. We've talked about that. You know,
- 1:13:35Speaker 9: teams are playing us a little bit soft. Um, And
- 1:13:38Speaker 9: they're kind of forcing the ball underneath. There's a fine
- 1:13:41Speaker 9: line between being overly aggressive. We say it this way,
- 1:13:44Speaker 9: a shot called is not a shot taken. We certainly
- 1:13:46Speaker 9: have called some shots. And when they're there, we take them.
- 1:13:49Speaker 9: When they're not, we check it down. I think Dak's
- 1:13:51Speaker 9: actually done a really good job of being patient against
- 1:13:53Speaker 9: some of these teams that want to push out deep
- 1:13:56Speaker 9: and put an umbrella over the top of our elite weapons.
- 1:13:59Speaker 9: But we're also aware that explosive plays make it a
- 1:14:02Speaker 9: lot easier to score. And I think as you look
- 1:14:04Speaker 9: at our last two games, we just haven't been able
- 1:14:06Speaker 9: to produce those. So it's a, it's a mix between
- 1:14:10Speaker 9: when we call them, you know, executing them and taking
- 1:14:14Speaker 9: the shots when they're there, but also, you know, when
- 1:14:17Speaker 9: they're not there.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: We got to manage it and make good decisions. Okay.
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: Next, trying to pick up the blitz at some of
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: the Longhorns have been dealing with and talking about this
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: week as well. What gives Schottenheimer confidence that his team
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: will be better against the blitz this week?
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: I've seen us do it.
- 1:14:32Speaker 9: You know, I've, think you know when you look at
- 1:14:33Speaker 9: the last two games you know um i give those
- 1:14:37Speaker 9: guys credit but we didn't execute very well we didn't
- 1:14:39Speaker 9: adjust quick enough um we didn't make some of the
- 1:14:42Speaker 9: uh you know site adjustments and hot responses that we
- 1:14:46Speaker 9: normally do but i've seen us do it you know
- 1:14:48Speaker 9: you know this was not the first time we've seen
- 1:14:50Speaker 9: a lot of blitzes um but again the balance is
- 1:14:53Speaker 9: really where i i say you know no one wants
- 1:14:55Speaker 9: to get in those games where you're throwing it 54
- 1:14:57Speaker 9: times against a good opponent and a really good pass
- 1:15:00Speaker 9: defense so Um, what gives me confidence in knowing who's
- 1:15:03Speaker 9: out there playing, starting up front with the offensive line,
- 1:15:06Speaker 9: how much pride they take in protecting the quarterback, uh,
- 1:15:09Speaker 9: the running backs. What a great job that they do
- 1:15:11Speaker 9: with their blitz pickup. But, um, at the end of
- 1:15:14Speaker 9: the day, Dak got hit way too much in these
- 1:15:16Speaker 9: last two games. And that pisses me off and it
- 1:15:19Speaker 9: pisses us off because, uh, It shouldn't happen, and we've
- 1:15:22Speaker 9: got to keep them clean.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: And that means getting off of that ugly number, which
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: currently shows the Cowboys allowing the second most unblocked pressures
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: in the NFL.
- 1:15:33Speaker 9: Overload blitzes, teams knowing we have to throw it, and
- 1:15:36Speaker 9: they're saying that they don't want Dak Prescott to be
- 1:15:38Speaker 9: able to sit back there and have time to throw it.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: So there's certainly... answers and solutions to that.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: But that's why all right uh next uh talking about
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: the eagles that's the opponent on monday night in philadelphia
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: where does he see the eagles now even with all
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: the injuries we know jalen hurts is out for the
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: rest of the year they have davante smith back but
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: they've had several other guys being obviously uh saquon barkley
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: guys that are out of the lineup where does he
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: see the eagles right.
- 1:16:05Speaker 9: Now they look pretty good to me um again you
- 1:16:08Speaker 9: guys might have seen 98 90 two pretty good players inside.
- 1:16:12Speaker 9: Zach Vaughn, I think, is one of the best linebackers
- 1:16:15Speaker 9: in football. You know, the edge pieces, they're beat up
- 1:16:19Speaker 9: there a little bit, you know. But, you know, the
- 1:16:22Speaker 9: two corners, they've got a ton of resources invested in that.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: Cooper Dejean, outstanding.
- 1:16:28Speaker 9: A lot of moving parts on their offensive line, of course,
- 1:16:31Speaker 9: but it sounds like they're getting healthier heading back to
- 1:16:34Speaker 9: this game. We certainly expect to see Saquon Barkley. And then,
- 1:16:38Speaker 9: you know, Tanner McKee knows the system well. He's got
- 1:16:42Speaker 9: some weapons with Lemon and Devontae Smith and Goddard, who
- 1:16:45Speaker 9: is a safety security blanket, if you will.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: So they're a really talented team. Okay.
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: So that's what they'll be looking at in terms of
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: the Eagles.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: And he has asked about signing Kyle Trask to the
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: practice squad.
- 1:17:00Speaker 9: Yeah, we were talking with Kyle in the meetings today.
- 1:17:03Speaker 9: He's been on every team in the NFC South. So
- 1:17:05Speaker 9: he says he's very comfortable with those. Most of the
- 1:17:08Speaker 9: guys in that room, the quarterback room, I'm talking about
- 1:17:12Speaker 9: Sam Howell, Will Greer.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: They've been in Philadelphia, so these guys are well-traveled.
- 1:17:19Speaker 9: The backup quarterbacks in this league, they put a lot
- 1:17:21Speaker 9: of miles on their cars because.
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: They do a lot of traveling.
- 1:17:24Speaker 9: But, yeah, excited cows here, and we caught up a
- 1:17:27Speaker 9: little bit on the Gators' big win the other night.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: That's all we are.
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: That's how it is.
- 1:17:32Speaker 6: That's how it is.
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: It was a shot. I'm just saying, it was a
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: little bit of a shot.
- 1:17:38Speaker 6: I get to push back some, too, you know.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess it's a little bit of a shot there,
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: you know. But then, since we were on the subject.
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: of uh talking about uh quarterbacks he was asked about
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: tanner mckee uh there for the eagles you know.
- 1:17:54Speaker 9: We expect them to get some guys out and i
- 1:17:56Speaker 9: think he's got a really good feel for what they're
- 1:17:58Speaker 9: doing from a protection standpoint he knows where everybody is
- 1:18:01Speaker 9: i think that's one thing when we looked at the
- 1:18:02Speaker 9: game you know we saw that he understands he's going
- 1:18:05Speaker 9: to get the ball thrown quick and throw completions and
- 1:18:08Speaker 9: move the ball forward if you will um certainly not
- 1:18:10Speaker 9: nearly the athlete that jaylen is but um he's a
- 1:18:13Speaker 9: he's a talented passer that knows his strengths and he's.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: Been around for a while.
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: And then finally asked about what it takes to balance
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: the mental and psychological side of the head coaching position
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: with the X's and O's that he.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Has to employ.
- 1:18:29Speaker 9: It's more of a, it's more of a head coaching thing,
- 1:18:34Speaker 9: you know, in terms of it's always, there's always ups
- 1:18:36Speaker 9: and downs, whether you're coaching the offensive line, the defensive backs,
- 1:18:39Speaker 9: you're the coordinator, But when you're in charge of the
- 1:18:43Speaker 9: entire team, you get pulled in different directions.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: You know, you deal with the emotions that you have.
- 1:18:50Speaker 9: You deal with the emotions that your players have, that
- 1:18:52Speaker 9: your coaches have. And so sometimes you feel like you're
- 1:18:55Speaker 9: a clinician, a psychologist. And again, that's where I think
- 1:19:01Speaker 9: I am at my best. You know, am I frustrated
- 1:19:05Speaker 9: and pissed off? You're damn right I am. But I'm
- 1:19:08Speaker 9: going to roll my sleeves up and I'm going to
- 1:19:09Speaker 9: go to work and I'm going to solve it. And
- 1:19:12Speaker 9: I think by leading that way and being like that,
- 1:19:15Speaker 9: the players are going to follow. The coaches are going
- 1:19:18Speaker 9: to follow. And so that's the way I take pride
- 1:19:20Speaker 9: in trying to carry myself.
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: Cowboys, Monday night against the Eagles. Boy, every time we
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: turn around, they're playing a primetime game. Sunday night, Monday night,
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: a late afternoon game, you know, that kind of thing.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: So it'll be Monday night. And you'll hear it on 98.1
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: FM KVAT coverage. It'll begin at 6 to kick off
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: round 720. All right, up next, more from Longhorns head
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: coach Steve Sarkisian. But this will be a preview of
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: tonight's Longhorn Weekly with the head coach when we continue
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: Heading for a showdown.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: Well, the Longhorns are heading for a showdown just like ELO.
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: By the way, speaking of showdown, here's an update on
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: the story we had for you in Inconceivable.
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: It is now official.
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: The Florida Bar has fired the employee over the comments
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: he made to the Miami football player.
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: You gotta watch what you say on social media. You
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: gotta watch what you say in general, but I mean,
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: that's not the lesson here.
- 1:20:16Speaker 3: The lesson here is to mind your own business and
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: don't be sending those types of nasty messages.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: Brief investigation in Instagram direct messages sent by Cade McClendon,
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: who worked at the Florida Bar for about two years
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: as a computer technician.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: Was fired late yesterday.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: An account from a person using his name sent a
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: number of messages to Miami's Damon Wilson II after the
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: hurricane's victory, which included several racist and homophobic slurs.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: Wilson is black.
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: He shared a screenshot of the messages publicly on Sunday,
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: called it a glimpse into the life of a black
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: student athlete.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: And the bar said Tuesday McClendon was under investigation.
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: The group's statement, said those messages were reprehensible and inconsistent
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: with the mission values and policies of the Florida Bar.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: While McClendon denied sending the messages, he did not provide
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: evidence sufficient to demonstrate to the Florida Bar's satisfaction that
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: his Instagram account had been compromised. As of today, the
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: Florida Bar has terminated McClendon's employment. So it's unclear why
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: those private messages were sent to Wilson's in his first
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: season of Miami after playing previously at Georgia and Missouri.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: He might have said he was hacked, but he didn't
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: have the evidence to show.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: That he was hacked.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: So the Florida Bar could not hack that. And so
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: he's gone. All right. Meanwhile, the Longhorns are getting ready.
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: They're dealing with their own issues, trying to turn it
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: around after back-to-back losses. A little preview of tonight's edition
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: of Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark. where we got into
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: the conversation of how the coach and the coaches, you know,
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: interlock with the players to make sure that everybody's on
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: the same page, so they can get things turned around.
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: We had a baseball coach around here who was pretty successful.
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: He finished up his time here about 10 years ago.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: The late Augie Garrido had eight trips to Omaha, a
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: couple of national championships. And he used to say, what
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: I'm expected to provide and earn in terms of my
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: keep is not when we're in Omaha. and not when
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: we're in first place in the then Big 12 Conference.
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: It's when things are adverse, when we do have the
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: adversity on that. You share a similar philosophy with the coaches,
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: not that you're trying any less hard when things are
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: going well as opposed to the other, but part of
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: what the coach's responsibility is, along with the players, is
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: to dig out of it, right?
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: Well, I think so, and there's a lot of layers
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: to that, right? When you think about, you know, everybody
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: wants to look at the players the final product, right?
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: Everyone looks at, did we win or did we lose?
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: The result.
- 1:23:05Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: The result. And as a coach, I think it's important
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: to look at all of the body of work, right?
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: And you're talking about individual people in the organization, coaches,
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: staff members, players. You're looking at aspects of offense, defense,
- 1:23:22Speaker 4: special teams, and then you drill down deeper into position
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: groups than individual players. And you're looking at schemes and
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: But then you're also looking at the totality of the
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: temperature of the organization, right? And the culture and the mindset.
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: And I think that's always like you're, you're, you're kind of,
- 1:23:39Speaker 4: I was like thinking of it as like playing the
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: piano in essence of, of hitting which key is the
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: right key at the right time to push the right buttons,
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: to motivate the individuals, right? To help individuals make the
- 1:23:51Speaker 4: necessary changes, whether it's fundamentally, schematically, whatever that looks like,
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: could be psychologically, um, But then you're also given the
- 1:23:59Speaker 4: reminder of that they're part of a team and that
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: there's pride in being part of a team. But there's
- 1:24:05Speaker 4: also the self-pride. There's the family pride, the name on
- 1:24:08Speaker 4: their back. There's the pride of wearing this on your chest.
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: And all those things adding into, can we find a
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: source that we tap into that allows you to dig
- 1:24:21Speaker 4: a little deeper, to work a little harder, to spend
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: a little more time And in essence, put you in
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: a space where you've got the confidence that you can
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: do your job really well, that you're surrounded by people
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: that are supporting you and helping you do your job
- 1:24:36Speaker 4: really well. In turn, are you providing the support for
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: them so that they can do their job really well,
- 1:24:42Speaker 4: that you have the trust for them and the belief
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: for them? Because I always say, like, everybody wants to win.
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: That's easy. You know, everybody, Saturday night, we take the
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: field at 649 against Ole Miss. I promise you I've
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: got a locker room full of people that want to win.
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: But are we doing the things necessary to put ourselves
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: in the best position to win? And part of that
- 1:25:03Speaker 4: is practice. Part of that is the mindset, right? Part
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: of that is trust and belief. All those things add
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: up to when we take the field knowing we did
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: all the work necessary to go out and that we've
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: earned the right and the opportunity to go win the game.
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: And that's one play at a time. And I was
- 1:25:21Speaker 4: just talking to the team about this the other day.
- 1:25:24Speaker 4: Think about, on average, 75 plays of defense, 75 plays
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: of offense, roughly 25 or so plays of special teams.
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: So all of a sudden now we're looking at 175 fights,
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: six-second fights. And are we willing to fight 175 times
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: one play, one round at a time? And every fight
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: is different. Every people in the fight is different. But
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: what are we fighting for? And that's where the pride
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: has to kick in. But that pride has to kick
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: in on Monday in the meeting room, right? My attention
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: to detail. Tuesday at practice, right? Tuesday night, Wednesday, Thursday,
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: so on and so forth. So it's a lot, right,
- 1:26:07Speaker 4: that encompasses. But at the end of the day, it's
- 1:26:10Speaker 4: not about want to. There's a lot of want to.
- 1:26:13Speaker 4: It's about are you willing to do the work? Are
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: you willing to go above and beyond to do the
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: work to put yourself in position to make that happen?
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: You love your players.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: We know this and I've heard this and your players
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: love you from what they've talked about. With all of that,
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: the love and the respect and all that, does it
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: make it more challenging to have the difficult conversation when
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: you have to have it?
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: No, I don't think so. I honestly think it, I
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: don't want to say make, nothing's easy about losing two
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: games in a row. Let's be real candid about that.
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: There's nothing easy about it. But because of the transparency
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: we have in our program, because the honesty we have
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: in our program, I was touching on the team on Monday.
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: I told them, it's okay to be frustrated. It's okay
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: to feel disappointed. It's okay to be angry. But it's
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: also okay to have constructive conversations. And we have to
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: have the constructive criticism. We have to have the constructive
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: conversations if we're going to move forward. And But what's
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: not okay is to whine, to complain, to have the
- 1:27:19Speaker 4: poor me's, to point the fingers. That's not okay. That
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: will not be tolerated. But we do need to have
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: constructive conversations. And we're going to start right now, guys.
- 1:27:28Speaker 4: We're going to start with constructive conversations. And we went
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: in about where our issues were, what we needed to
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: do to move forward. Because I never like to just say,
- 1:27:37Speaker 4: here's a problem and not give them a way to
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: get out of it. And then are we are we
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: doing those things? And so that's what the week has
- 1:27:45Speaker 4: been about. And so we've constantly come back to that.
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: So they've been understanding. And I said, if anybody has
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: takes any umbrage to this, if I know nobody's going
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: to want to really say anything in this moment, but
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: feel free and come see me and we can talk
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: it through. I think everybody understood exactly what they needed
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: to do to move forward. And this has been a
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: really good week. Been a better week than a week ago,
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: quite frankly. And you'd think it'd be worse, it'd be harder,
- 1:28:10Speaker 4: but it's been better. And I've been very proud of
- 1:28:12Speaker 4: our guys. I've been very proud of our staff that,
- 1:28:15Speaker 4: you know, the lasting message I told our guys on
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: Monday as we started the week, be part of the solution.
- 1:28:21Speaker 4: Be part of the solution. It's easy to pour gasoline
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: on this fire right now. Be part of the solution.
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: How are we putting this fire out? And what do
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: we need to do to get that done? And I
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: think that we've got an organization full of people that
- 1:28:34Speaker 4: have committed to that.
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: You have a plan and the coaches have a plan
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: and you spell it out to the players.
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: As to what you need.
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: Is it challenging for them to make sure they're not
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: pointing the fingers, that they're working together when they're doing
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: in addition to what you and the coaching staff are doing?
- 1:28:51Speaker 4: I think that's where leadership kicks in, right? Like I said,
- 1:28:55Speaker 4: I've touched on this team in particular, the connectivity that
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: this team has. And I think, as I said, that
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: started with a lot of the leadership that this team has.
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: And we've got a lot of guys who have been
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: in this program four, three years now who understand what
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: it takes. We've been through tough times before, and I
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: tell the team all the time, tough times don't last,
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: tough teams do. And we pride ourselves on the mental
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: and physical toughness that is required, especially now more than
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: ever in our conference as we're seeing what's been taking
- 1:29:26Speaker 4: place in our conference. We will get on the other
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: side of this, but it just doesn't happen. You don't
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: snap your finger and it just doesn't happen. It takes
- 1:29:35Speaker 4: hard work. It takes connectivity. You've got to stay connected.
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: We can't get fragmented. We always say a fist is
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: a lot more powerful than an open hand, and we've
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: got to stay connected. We've got to stay tight, and
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: I commend our leaders. I commend this team for doing
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: exactly that.
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: And also, your players have talked about that this week,
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: about staying together like you told us in the postgame
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: the other night. I've asked the guys. to stay together
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: and to not let this thing mushroom and balloon from them.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: And obviously that comes from leadership. And it has to
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: come also from them with regard to the younger guys
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: who may be going through adversity. You recruit and sign
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: a lot of players from incredibly successful programs. So maybe
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: if it's not the first, it might be one of
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: the few times they've really had a lot of adversity.
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: Well, for sure. Personal adversity, too.
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: You got to think a lot of these guys have
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: been the best at what they've in their in their lives.
- 1:30:26Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: Little League football, high school football, All-Americans, how many ever
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: stars they had. And now, you know, we're at this
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: midpoint of the season and maybe they're not used to
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: not playing as much as they're playing. And them recognizing that,
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: you know, incremental improvement is a really good thing. And
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: I just went and met with the defensive staff before
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: I came over here, praising them for the guys on
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: scout team and how good of a week they had.
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: You know, and I'm talking about, you know, Jamarian Carlton.
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: I'm talking about Tyler Atkinson. I'm talking about Josiah Sharma.
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: I'm talking about Rocky Cummings, guys who are down there
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: with us. I'm talking about Tita. some guys who are
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: really high-level players who are going to be great players
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: for us. But you'd think in the middle of the season,
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: we've lost a couple games in a row by a
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: field goal. You'd think the dauber would be down. Those
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: guys have come to work this weekend, and I'm proud
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: of those guys. As much as everyone thinks we're just
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: focused on our frontline starters, we've got to keep developing
- 1:31:25Speaker 4: our younger players in our program too. So credit to
- 1:31:28Speaker 4: everybody in the organization for believing in the process of
- 1:31:31Speaker 4: where we need.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: To get to.
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: All right, that's a little sneak preview of tonight's airing
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: of Longhorn Weekly. You can hear the entire program at
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: 7 o'clock. Juan Cosby joins.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: Us as well.
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: We'll take a look at the Ole Miss Rebels. All
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: out of that, it's Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark coming
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: up tonight at 7 o'clock here on The Zone. We're
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: going to hear some more from Sark from today from
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: the MediaZoom, getting people caught up to speed on where
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: the team is and the preparations. That's up next when
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: we continue on 13 Under the Zone on the iHeartRadio app.
