Transcript
- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:02Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:04On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:08to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:10what God is doing in us and in our community.
- 0:13This fall, we're living in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke,
- 0:16and John and learning how to live from our model, Jesus.
- 0:19This conversation was inspired by our series The Gospels.
- 0:23You can find more information about our church at
- 0:25fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:29conversation. Welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:33In a minute. On our new day of the week,
- 0:36which will be Thursdays. From here on out.
- 0:40Yes Sir, When was our last episode?
- 0:43Well, we had the the mission team share.
- 0:46We shared that a couple weeks ago, so.
- 0:48If you missed that, find that from a couple weeks ago.
- 0:50Yeah, worth listening to. And besides that, it might have
- 0:53been back in June. I can't think if we released any
- 0:57conversations. Yeah.
- 0:59So since June, what was a ministry highlight and a
- 1:05personal highlight from the summer?
- 1:07Ministry highlight for me has been as we've moved through this
- 1:12process of going from our two services to 1 service, just
- 1:19watching everyone come together and the way, you know, one of
- 1:22the constant refrains I keep hearing from people is it's so
- 1:26nice for everyone to be together.
- 1:28And to me it finally feels like we really are one church there.
- 1:34I've always felt that divide between the first service and
- 1:38the second service. And hopefully as we continue in
- 1:43this pattern, those walls would continue to break down.
- 1:48Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:49So I'd be a ministry highlight. And personally, personally, I'd
- 1:53say Megan, I took a couple days and went up to New York City
- 1:59here towards the end of August, and we just had a great time
- 2:03together. Boys were in different places
- 2:06and doing different things and. In New York on their own.
- 2:09No, no, no. We left them in New Jersey.
- 2:12Yeah, just to get a couple days. It was just to be together, to
- 2:16have all kinds of good conversations, to make memories
- 2:19together, to see things in New York that Meg had never seen
- 2:23before. It's a great time.
- 2:26I got two more, two more stadiums ticked off my stadium
- 2:30chafing. Trip for you and Meg, but it was
- 2:33really a baseball trip disguised as.
- 2:36AI mean Yeah, well, we did plan it around those things.
- 2:40So what about for you? What are your your highlights
- 2:44this summer? I would say besides Mexico,
- 2:47because everyone's probably tired of hearing about Mexico,
- 2:50we had a book club running through the summer with some of
- 2:53our youth. It was an optional thing where
- 2:56they could pick a book, a Christian book, and they read
- 3:00it. And every time we gathered, they
- 3:02would share what happened, what stuck out and pose a question to
- 3:05our group. And while we eat snacks and
- 3:08whatever. And it the books were good and
- 3:11fruitful for them. But then it also led to like a
- 3:14really good dialogue and it just made you feel like you read a
- 3:17whole bunch of books in a summer, which you really only
- 3:20had to read 1, which I like because I hate reading personal.
- 3:26Well, this is still Mexico, really.
- 3:28But how was it to have your kids in La Pamia?
- 3:31A mess? No, it was.
- 3:35Because that's the first time you took.
- 3:37Yeah, it was the first time you took either of them.
- 3:39Yeah, it was the first time either of them had been to
- 3:40Mexico. So everyone in the village has
- 3:42been dying to meet them in person.
- 3:45And when they got acclimated with someone, it was great and
- 3:51like everything I'd ever dreamed.
- 3:53But it takes some time for toddlers to warm up to people.
- 3:58So when you're going to like new environment and new people every
- 4:02few hours because of all the invitations, we have never
- 4:06really gets a chance to warm off.
- 4:08Yeah, yeah. And that's tough.
- 4:10A lot of the social life is at night time.
- 4:13Like church starts at 7:00 and then you hang out and do stuff
- 4:15afterwards. And their bodies never adjusted.
- 4:18So they were asleep by 5:30 and awake from 4:00 to 5:00 in the
- 4:23morning. So then I always up at 4:00 to
- 4:255:00 in the morning with them. And staying out.
- 4:28And then staying out late with it and then doing team stuff all
- 4:32day. And then so it's going to be a
- 4:34few years, so we go back. But I'm very glad that we did
- 4:37it. They were incredible during the
- 4:39travels. They survived 5 hours on the
- 4:42plane. They survived 6 hours of busing
- 4:46and like, maybe on the way down, maybe when whimpered for 30
- 4:52seconds, Jack. And that was it for the whole
- 4:54thing. So very, very blessed.
- 4:57But yeah, so that was a win in certain aspects.
- 5:01But everyone was so happy. And then every time Theo was
- 5:04like upset and throwing a fit, they were like, just like when
- 5:07Jeremy was a little great. Well, I'm glad they're taking it
- 5:13with not being offended at how sure upset he was at certain
- 5:18times. I would say I got some family
- 5:21vacations pre Mexico that feels so distant now.
- 5:25But time with my in laws, time with my family, my family
- 5:29vacation is always extremely refreshing.
- 5:32Yeah, rejuvenating for my soul. And this year, the time with my
- 5:35in laws was also that. And I'll edit it if I think
- 5:40Rebecca doesn't want that out there.
- 5:43I was going to say, what's he going to say?
- 5:45Here, both were very nice this year and I'm very glad it all
- 5:49worked out. And so as we start getting back
- 5:52into the swing of things with the podcast and school schedules
- 5:57and life and all of that, that kind of comes with September.
- 6:01Explain the series we're doing now.
- 6:04I know it connects with something happening outside of
- 6:07our church, but why go with what Wake Up Call is doing?
- 6:13So what are we doing and why? Yeah.
- 6:15This fall we're we're taking a solid 3 months in the Gospels.
- 6:23And there have been different times in preaching schedule here
- 6:29where we've focused in on maybe a chunk of a gospel or certain
- 6:33themes within a gospel like we did the I Am series during Lent,
- 6:37one year from John and and those kind of things.
- 6:41But when Seedbeds started talking about doing their daily
- 6:46devotional from 1 chapter a day in the Gospels over the course
- 6:51of 89 days, that it started to resonate with me.
- 6:55And the idea of just encouraging our people, not just in our
- 7:00sermon series, but throughout the week to engage with these
- 7:05stories from the life of Jesus. I quickly realized that like,
- 7:09this is where God was leading us.
- 7:12And so I was grateful that seedbed, you know, announced
- 7:16that in enough time that we could make the plans and
- 7:19encourage people to sign up and, and and listen.
- 7:22It's a challenge by choice, choice kind of thing, right?
- 7:25Like you might come and you're just listening to the sermon
- 7:28series or maybe this podcast. You can also read the one
- 7:31chapter a day. You can add in the daily
- 7:34devotional from seedbed. And I think a couple of the
- 7:38Sunday school classes, like I think the youth and the
- 7:42conversation class are both also taking like some chunk of what
- 7:48we're reading during the week and talking about it in their
- 7:52Sunday school class. It's just a great, great
- 7:55opportunity. Because Jesus is right smack at
- 7:58the center of of Christianity, right?
- 8:01If he's not, it's not Christianity.
- 8:04And So what better way to get to know him better to see more of
- 8:10the example he left us than to spend this time in the Gospels?
- 8:16Yeah, I'll forewarn for this whole season, if you want to
- 8:20call it, of the podcast of what I'm studying in seminary.
- 8:25So when you hear me referencing stuff, you already know that
- 8:29this semester we'll be studying. We'll now that you're part of
- 8:33this for free, we'll be studying church history.
- 8:38And as I've started the class, it's great because it's not just
- 8:42like what historical events happened within the church.
- 8:45Yeah. We're also going into the
- 8:47history of, like, Christian thinking.
- 8:50Yeah. And the history of theology.
- 8:53And so it's all of that will be popping up from time to time,
- 8:58probably most definitely within our conversations.
- 9:00Now you're speaking my language, Jeremy.
- 9:03It's great. I love this.
- 9:04Stuff and I, we don't have time today to go over everything.
- 9:07No, I'd love to talk about. But I love to look at at the the
- 9:12history of Christianity and the intellectual history of
- 9:15Christianity and how the thought processes that were coming in
- 9:20from the world around them enabled them to think deeper
- 9:24thoughts about who God was and and created a context where
- 9:29Christianity could be planted and take root and build upon
- 9:34what what God was doing. And so within that class, the
- 9:39professor is provided an extra credit.
- 9:43And so I'm obviously taking it. Take all the help I can get.
- 9:46And it's one of his own books. Jesus the stranger by.
- 9:50Ken Collins. Yeah, by Ken Collins.
- 9:53And it's kind of covering this, the fuller picture of Jesus, not
- 9:58just a we like Jesus for this part or this part, but each
- 10:02little section covers like what he was teaching on what he was
- 10:06experiencing, what was going on that he was speaking into.
- 10:10And so I think our series that we're doing is going to be just
- 10:16an an exceptional opportunity if the people take it up for them
- 10:20to really get to meet with Jesus in a way that maybe they've
- 10:26never holistically done within their church life slash personal
- 10:31walk life. And I'm sure that when we're
- 10:34gone next week in for the seedbed conference that we can
- 10:38thank JD Walt in person for what he's doing.
- 10:43But as you talk about like your love for the history of
- 10:46Christian thought and how the early church fathers like, OK,
- 10:50this is what we know for sure. This is what we all agree upon
- 10:54as we're establishing the early church intentionally or
- 10:57unintentionally, depending on the time and place and people.
- 11:01You know, heresy is not just that it goes against the Bible,
- 11:07it goes against the agreed upon tradition from the early church
- 11:13fathers. And yesterday, essentially, you
- 11:17were walking a line. Yeah, you're walking a line.
- 11:20And people, if they misinterpret or how hold a certain view of of
- 11:25another area, could think that you were on the edge of entering
- 11:29into heresy. Not a great thing for a pastor
- 11:32to do, to fall into heresy. Give us what you thought was
- 11:37borderline heresy, why you don't believe it to be so, and why you
- 11:44thought it was important enough to get close to that edge from
- 11:48the pulpit. Well, let me start by saying, I
- 11:52think when we look at the history of Christianity, we look
- 11:57at particularly like we'll say the 1st 500 years, that's well
- 12:02that's kind of broadly accepted as early Christianity.
- 12:06Within that time, there were any number of times when someone, a
- 12:14leader within the church, kind of rose up with a contrary view
- 12:22that came to be called heresy. And almost across the board it
- 12:27had to do with the nature of Jesus almost entirely.
- 12:32So you had like the the Aryans who followed a pastor named
- 12:38Arias, and Arias taught that Jesus wasn't God.
- 12:44He was the first creation of God, through whom then God
- 12:50created everything else. So their their mantra came to be
- 12:58that there was a time when he was not.
- 13:04Because it says he was in the beginning, at the beginning of
- 13:09Earth and physical fruition. But Arias took that to be that
- 13:13there was a beginning even for the sun.
- 13:17Gotcha. And so, you know, so when you
- 13:19get to the Council of Nicaea, from which we get the Nicene
- 13:23Creed, that's when what what we call orthodoxy, right?
- 13:30Belief established that no, Jesus was not created, He is
- 13:37uncreated, He's begotten of the Father in some kind of eternal
- 13:43way, but that he always coexisted as part of the triune
- 13:48God and so did the Spirit. So that's just one example.
- 13:53There's all kinds of other ones like Marcionism said that there
- 14:00there was actually a split between the Old Testament God
- 14:05and the New Testament Jesus. And so we see this angry,
- 14:09vengeful God in the Old Testament who was supplanted by
- 14:16this God of grace and love in the person of Jesus.
- 14:21And so, you know, Marcian wanted to to cut the Old Testament off
- 14:28from Holy Scripture and all those kind of things.
- 14:32Some people do that and and some people practically are Marcians
- 14:39all kinds of things like that modalism which said that you
- 14:42know the God you're. Going Tom Get.
- 14:43Back to my question, sorry I was trying to buy myself some time.
- 14:46Yeah, nice try. But now I'm deep down the rabbit
- 14:48hole. So, so the the heresies about
- 14:54Christ in the early church always tended to lean one way or
- 14:58the other, either that Jesus was really God and not really human,
- 15:05or that he was really human, but he wasn't quite God.
- 15:10And, and I think in the American church, at least in my own
- 15:16experience, it feels like we've leaned toward he's really God,
- 15:26but maybe he's not quite human. You know, he's, he's super
- 15:30human. He's something other than.
- 15:32He's got 100% package. Yeah, wrapped up, Yeah, He's got
- 15:35a human body, but his mind, his will, his heart, that was all
- 15:40God. And I don't think that's quite
- 15:44captures what the church has taught about the incarnation,
- 15:48that Jesus was 100% God and 100% human.
- 15:54And that's just really hard to wrap our minds around because we
- 15:58we can't have 200% of something like it's mutually exclusive in
- 16:04in our limited thinking. And so my fear was that people
- 16:10would hear most of what I was saying and only hear the part
- 16:16that said, But Jesus was really just a human.
- 16:21And I think that's where we get in trouble, because he wasn't
- 16:23just a human, but he was completely and entirely a human.
- 16:30He was a human with the first credit card.
- 16:32Yes, sorry if that analogy tripped anybody up.
- 16:38It helped me. It made sense to me to think
- 16:42that, you know that Jesus retained his divinity, but he
- 16:49didn't. He chose not to act from that
- 16:54aspect of it, or not to use the power associated with it, and
- 16:58certainly not to use that power to accomplish His own will and
- 17:03desires, or to make things easier for Himself.
- 17:07Yeah. I think that's where we have to
- 17:09be if we're going to take seriously this 100 percent, 100%
- 17:14God and man, this unique once in time reality.
- 17:22But to recognize that within Jesus, humanity lies what is
- 17:27possible for a human being. Because I think too often we
- 17:35think, oh, Jesus, you know, Oh yes, he was quote UN quote
- 17:40human, but he is an exception. You know, we can't actually live
- 17:44up to that. And in a lot of ways I get that.
- 17:48But then it makes it real easy to say, oh, but what about the
- 17:51apostles? Well, they were also exceptions.
- 17:54And then, then, then we make the entire Bible into the these
- 17:59stories of all these exceptions. So why bother trying?
- 18:02So why bother trying? Yeah, or, or.
- 18:06Why bother thinking that anything other than the quote,
- 18:10Normal human experience is what we're made for?
- 18:15And we limit what God can do and then through US.
- 18:17Yeah, yeah. And that kind of leads into a
- 18:21question that we got from a listener shout out to Ang says
- 18:25if we're if you talked about us becoming like Jesus, are the
- 18:29words like that get thrown around sanctification, spiritual
- 18:34formation. We also use a lot and there's a
- 18:36fancier 1 theosis. Are they all different ways of
- 18:41saying the same thing? So before I answer that, Jeremy,
- 18:45why don't you just go ahead and and define what those, what
- 18:49those terms? The questions, that's why I'm
- 18:52asking. The questions, all right.
- 18:54You're the answer, man. Yeah.
- 18:56Sure, I tried. All right.
- 19:00So when we talk about sanctification, all right,
- 19:02that's, that's a good Wesleyan word.
- 19:04John Wesley talked about sanctification line.
- 19:07He talked about the sanctifying grace that God gives us.
- 19:10We're talking about the process of being made holy.
- 19:16That's what it means to be sanctified, the process of being
- 19:19becoming set apart and becoming distinct from what you were
- 19:24before or what the world is. You know, those kind of things.
- 19:29Spiritual formation is the other one to use spiritual formation
- 19:34similarly, it's in practicing the way John Mark Comer talks
- 19:40for a while about how we're all being spiritually formed, right?
- 19:45This isn't a uniquely Christian thing, and it's not just a
- 19:49religious thing. Even people who don't practice a
- 19:54religion, they're outside the church, all that kind of stuff,
- 19:56they're still being formed spiritually by the spiritual
- 19:59influences all around them, whether they recognize it or
- 20:02not. In spiritual formation, we're
- 20:04just. Choosing to enter in and engage
- 20:08more intentionally for the purpose of of cooperating with
- 20:13the work of the spirit in our lives.
- 20:15So spiritual formation you could swap in the word discipleship,
- 20:22all those kind of things. It's it's that learning process
- 20:26of cooperating with God, theosis.
- 20:30Theosis is a key concept within the Eastern Orthodox Church.
- 20:38So. Kissing the pictures.
- 20:41Kiss So to get into Jeremy's Christian history class, you
- 20:47know, in in 1054, I think it was there was a split between the
- 20:54eastern side of the church and the western part of the church
- 20:58over. There are probably a lot of
- 21:01contributing factors, but it kind of came down to whether the
- 21:06Holy Spirit proceeds just from God the Father or from God the
- 21:10Father and God the Son. Anyway.
- 21:13So the the Bishop in Constantinople and the Bishop in
- 21:18Rome who had kind of risen up to be kind of the leaders of each
- 21:22of those halves, mutually excommunicated each other.
- 21:28And there became the the split between the ether Eastern
- 21:32Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church in Eastern
- 21:36Orthodoxy. This idea of theosis is the idea
- 21:41that as we progress in our faith, as we mature in our
- 21:47faith, we are in the process not of becoming God, but of being
- 21:53united with God. I think critics will often kind
- 22:00of draw a picture of it that that makes it look like using
- 22:05even their own words that were somehow becoming God.
- 22:08And I don't, I don't think that quite captures what they mean
- 22:12when they talk about theosis, but it's this process of
- 22:15becoming united with God or in union with God.
- 22:19And I think there's something beautiful in that picture of
- 22:23becoming united with God. I think they're nuanced ways of
- 22:27talking about what maturity in our faith looks like to be
- 22:33spiritually formed, to be sanctified, to be, to go through
- 22:39theosis, to become united with God.
- 22:42I think they're probably more similar than they are different
- 22:48in their core concepts, but the way they get talked about, the
- 22:53way they get worked out are a bit different.
- 22:56Yeah. And then the last is kind of a
- 22:59hypothetical. It hurt my brain hearing it,
- 23:03reading it, but I'll throw it out there.
- 23:06So if Jesus is in your thing, always following the will of the
- 23:11Father, if during the temptation, which is the
- 23:15majority of Scripture from yesterday, if during his
- 23:18temptation in the desert he decided to go against the will
- 23:22of the Father and given to one of the offers the devil makes,
- 23:28would that split the union of the Trinity?
- 23:33And was it even possible? Like that's why I thought like
- 23:36is it even possible for him to not?
- 23:39Like if it's 100% human, then that means that there's a
- 23:42possibility of falling short. Yeah.
- 23:45So then he couldn't be God. Then he couldn't be 100% God.
- 23:49That's where I think that mystery comes in.
- 23:52I don't know that we can explain it away, but I, I do somehow
- 23:58think, I do somehow think that it had to be possible for Jesus
- 24:05to choose other than the Father's will, or else he
- 24:08wouldn't have really been human, right?
- 24:10And the temptations wouldn't have really been temptations.
- 24:14They would have just been kind of window dressing.
- 24:17But if he wasn't able to actually choose those things,
- 24:22then it wasn't really temptation and what was really accomplished
- 24:28through it. Yeah.
- 24:30Maybe Satan didn't know it wasn't possible, so he tried
- 24:33anyway. So then that means we do go down
- 24:36the rabbit hole of let's say he chose not to.
- 24:39But he didn't, and I think it's part of why I'm really
- 24:46frustrated and also really glad that we don't really have
- 24:51stories in between the birth narratives, the Christmas
- 24:57narratives, and Jesus's ministry.
- 25:00Because besides the one, well. Aside from the one, but there's
- 25:04not much there, right? Because it doesn't really.
- 25:07I think if we had a bunch of stories there, it would make
- 25:11things a lot more Gray or questionable in some senses.
- 25:18I wish there were right. So we could say like, all right,
- 25:20what was Jesus like as a 13 year old boy?
- 25:22Because I know what 13 year old boys are like.
- 25:24And to imagine that that he somehow got through that without
- 25:29sinning, like, but we don't have those stories.
- 25:34And so we just have what we have.
- 25:38And I think that's enough. I think we have the Bible today
- 25:43that God wanted us to have. You know, he has faithfully
- 25:46preserved scripture down through the years and things that were
- 25:51rejected along the way were rejected with with good reason.
- 25:56You know, they weren't accepted by all believers at all times in
- 25:59every place. It's, it's the classic saying
- 26:03and, and what we have, particularly in the stories of
- 26:08Jesus temptation are a window into a person, a human being in
- 26:16the power of the spirit who's able to reject temptation and
- 26:22reject an offer to choose something other than God.
- 26:29And I think that then then speaks to us because if Jesus
- 26:35could do it in the power of the Spirit, again, like we're not
- 26:38saying it was implicitly through his own power as God, but
- 26:44through the power of the Spirit was able to reject temptation,
- 26:46then so can I, so can you. We can live lives that are
- 26:53pleasing and honoring to God in this life as we stay in union
- 27:01with the Father and the Spirit. So I I get the idea of the
- 27:04question and I get the desire to kind of untie some of those
- 27:10knots, but I don't think we can based on the revelation that we
- 27:16have. Yeah.
- 27:17I hope you were satisfied with this return to the podcast.
- 27:23And just as quick as we come back, we're going to be gone
- 27:28again because we have a sea bed conference next week.
- 27:30But we have a very, very special episode that is coming out next
- 27:34Thursday that you should still check out even though it won't
- 27:37be live. And about our all of the sermon
- 27:42coming up this Sunday. Well, that's our conversation
- 27:45for today, but that doesn't mean the conversation is over.
- 27:48We'd love to hear your thoughts on these topics as well.
- 27:51To ask a question about anything we've discussed in this episode
- 27:54or to join the conversation, you can head over to
- 27:57fumccollingswood.org/podcast. Thanks for being part of this
- 28:03conversation.
