- 0:00Welcome to Pick Up and Deliver, the podcast where I pick up my audio recorder as I step
- 0:07off the train and deliver an episode to you while I walk home.
- 0:10I'm Brendan Riley.
- 0:12Well, good afternoon listeners.
- 0:22It's a lovely day here in suburban Chicago.
- 0:24The sun is out, the sky is very lightly covered with drifting clouds, but generally nice
- 0:31and clear.
- 0:32The weather is in the mid-60s, which is perfect.
- 0:35No jacket, long sleeve shirt, and I'm enjoying my walk home.
- 0:40I'm excited to talk to you about some games and enjoy the weather together.
- 0:44Well, I figure out, because I'm not going to talk about games, or at least not mostly,
- 0:49because it's the end of April, which means it's time for me to look back a couple months
- 0:53and talk about some movies.
- 0:54That's right, it's time for the February 2025 movie Roundup.
- 0:58If this is a new segment for you every month or a couple months, I look back at the recent
- 1:03viewings and I talk about what I've watched, what I thought of those films, and how they
- 1:08connect to gaming.
- 1:10Either a thematic connection, if you're going to watch this movie, here's a game
- 1:13you can play with it, or some other observation about the hobby related to the film.
- 1:19That's my plan.
- 1:20If you're not interested in talking about movies, maybe this isn't the episode for you,
- 1:23but I hope you'll stick around with us.
- 1:25Anyway, because I feel like I have something to say.
- 1:27All right, the first movie I want to talk about is "Saturday Night".
- 1:31This came out in 2024, so that's a pretty new movie.
- 1:35This is a... I don't know what you'd call it, it's not a biopic, because it's not about
- 1:39a specific person.
- 1:41I guess in the fall under the category of "Inspired by True Events", it is a movie about
- 1:48the first season of "Saturday Night Live".
- 1:51For narrative convenience and dramatic purpose, what they've done is they took the first season
- 1:58of "Saturday Night Live" and compressed it all into a single night.
- 2:03So the idea is, all of a bunch of different things that happened on the first season of
- 2:07"Saturday Night Live" are depicted.
- 2:09They're all depicted as happening in one night.
- 2:12And the idea of "Saturday Night Live" at its core as being approved by the network because
- 2:18it was a bargaining tactic with Johnny Carson is part of the overall gambit.
- 2:24Loren Michaels, the famed producer of "Saturday Night Live" is depicted as the main character,
- 2:30but really what we're doing is we're following this large ensemble of people trying to figure
- 2:34out what this show is supposed to be and how it's going to work.
- 2:38A bunch of different characters have a lot of different kinds of motivation and because
- 2:42it's a huge cast, each one gets just a little bit of nuance.
- 2:47The heart of the film is a kind of conflict between the old and the new, between the way of
- 2:52doing things that was the standard for studio series at the time and the out of improv
- 2:59in line with youth culture mode that Loren Michaels was chasing as the way he constructed
- 3:07the show.
- 3:08A lot of the things that became part of the lore of the show are there.
- 3:13The idea of them trying to figure out what sketches they're going to do right up until the
- 3:18last minute.
- 3:20The idea that sketches are being written or rewritten or revised and so on all throughout is
- 3:26part of it.
- 3:27The idea that the sets are being worked on here and there at a moment's notice.
- 3:31There's a bunch of stuff that is really entertaining.
- 3:36There's a plot line with a scene that's supposed to have where there's supposed to be a
- 3:41floor that has a brick surface and the people who brought the bricks in are teamsters.
- 3:48So they're there to move bricks but they're not mason's.
- 3:53So, their union prohibits them from working on the brickwork.
- 3:57They don't have a union mason on site and so there isn't someone who can within union
- 4:03rules do the mason work and so they have a staffer who is doing the mason work.
- 4:09And he's struggling to get it done by the time the show comes on the air.
- 4:14There are the issue of John Belushi kind of disappearing because he feels like he is
- 4:21a legitimate, strong, comedic presence and he doesn't want to play the Bumblebee character
- 4:29but the Bumblebee is what they have set up for him to play so he's kind of having a tantrum
- 4:33about that.
- 4:34There's an ongoing plot with Chevy Chase being kind of a jerk to everybody but then Milton
- 4:40Burle's showing up and being an even bigger jerk to Chevy Chase.
- 4:43There's a whole bunch of stuff that makes the film a really compelling chaotic mess about
- 4:51a compelling chaotic mess.
- 4:53I like the movie a lot.
- 4:55I think it's worth watching.
- 4:57My guess is if you don't care at all about Saturday and at live it's probably less compelling
- 5:02but I think it is an ensemble story about a bunch of people trying to do a thing that's
- 5:05hard to do.
- 5:06It's a pretty entertaining yarn.
- 5:08So that is Saturday night.
- 5:10I think the closest game play experience I can think of that comes near to that is
- 5:14Roll Camera! which is a game about making movies.
- 5:17In that game you have a whole bunch of different stuff that's going on.
- 5:21You're trying to coordinate a variety of different effects and ideas, a variety of different
- 5:26people trying to participate in the process of making the movie.
- 5:30And of course there's a undercurrent in the film of not being able to solve problems without
- 5:40working together.
- 5:41So I guess if I were going to suggest a game to go with this you could play Roll Camera.
- 5:47There are also a number of Saturday Night live themed games.
- 5:49I don't know anything about them.
- 5:51That would be another option if you wanted to.
- 5:54Next up is Paddington 2.
- 5:56Paddington 2 is a lovely movie about our title character Paddington trying to find more
- 6:02about his history and understand his play from the universe and particularly in his world.
- 6:07Better.
- 6:08It's also about characters looking for their past.
- 6:12And of course there's a villainous con man.
- 6:15It's a very cute movie with a heartwarming message.
- 6:19I like the overall flow of it.
- 6:22I don't have a lot more to say in terms of a meditation on anything.
- 6:26It is a nice lesson about how we all have an impact on people around us.
- 6:32I think very early on there's this idea that Paddington is an important figure in his
- 6:37neighborhood.
- 6:38But then we also see how when he finds himself in a new community he's able to influence
- 6:43that community positively by just being himself and being engaged with the world.
- 6:47In a lot of ways Paddington is sort of a Ted Lasso figure, ruthlessly positive, relentlessly
- 6:54upbeat and earnest and holding people to account.
- 6:58It's a good movie.
- 6:59If you haven't seen it you definitely should watch it.
- 7:00I had the impression it was going to be life changing.
- 7:03I didn't really think it was life changing but I think it's very very good.
- 7:07It's hard to find a game that has a similar weight to it.
- 7:11I haven't played it yet but the pursuit of happiness might be one.
- 7:16But I know that game is competitive like you're trying to have a better life than other people.
- 7:19So some sort of cooperative game probably is a better situation there.
- 7:25In terms of being engaging for children, the game stuffed fables is probably meant to be
- 7:32more in line with what you would have in Paddington too.
- 7:37But ultimately I don't have a good fit for that one.
- 7:43Next up I rewatched Watchmen.
- 7:45I'm not really sure why.
- 7:47I guess I just felt like it.
- 7:49It's fine but I think it's too slavish to the comic book and it doesn't feel like it has
- 7:54a lot of soul.
- 7:55I also irritated that they changed the ending.
- 7:58It didn't change the ending much.
- 8:00It still has the same purpose but I like the comic book ending and the movie is so outrageous
- 8:05in terms of being slavish to the rest of the imagery and ideas in the book in the comic
- 8:10book.
- 8:11I don't know why they couldn't stick to that part as well.
- 8:15But whatever they didn't.
- 8:17If you're going to play a game to go with that, I think probably heroes wanted would be my
- 8:22pick.
- 8:23You could also do Sentinels of the multiverse.
- 8:25Although I didn't enjoy that game as much.
- 8:27Heroes wanted has more of the wry, failed superhero feel to it.
- 8:34That you are these sort of weird ridiculous superheroes trying to make a name for yourself.
- 8:38Much closer to like the mystery men or something.
- 8:40Which Watchmen isn't funny that way.
- 8:44Or maybe that's not serious enough.
- 8:46But I think that's kind of the idea.
- 8:48That's Watchmen from 2009.
- 8:50Next up we have Love Hurts.
- 8:52This is a movie starring Ke Huy Quan of who is in Goonies and Indiana Jones when he was
- 8:58a kid and more recently in everything everywhere all at once.
- 9:02And now end in Marvel Loki show which was pretty good.
- 9:08In this one he plays a sort of very upbeat silly real estate salesman who is very very good
- 9:18at being a real estate of salesman.
- 9:20And then one day his past shows up and turns out people are after him and they're out for
- 9:25blood and blah blah blah.
- 9:26It reminds me a bit of the movie Nobody or the movie A History of Violence.
- 9:33This idea of these characters who secretly have a brutal dark side that they have tried
- 9:39to leave behind and can't.
- 9:41It's meant to be funny in there are parts of it that are funny.
- 9:44Also Ke Huy Quan's experience as a martial artist and his stature is a short man of Asian
- 9:52descent.
- 9:53And the decision they made to have him do sort of comic fighting style where he's improvising
- 9:58with objects around him.
- 10:00Like it really hard not to compare this film with something like Rumble and the Bronx or
- 10:05the Drunken Master, right?
- 10:06The early Jackie Chan films where he is improvising with a lot of material around him.
- 10:12And obviously it's hard to stand up to that scrutiny.
- 10:16I would also say the plot in this movie wasn't as well developed the story that they established
- 10:22for this character.
- 10:24There are parts of it that were really good.
- 10:26My favorite bit was one of the assassins who comes after him is played by this very tall guy
- 10:33with a really mesmerizing deep voice who then recites poetry and that character is super
- 10:40compelling and I would like to see more of them.
- 10:43But otherwise it was pretty pedestrian in terms of the plot.
- 10:48And there's a lot of loopholes in terms of understanding what the story is about or in
- 10:53terms of having the story make a lot sense.
- 10:56And worst for me, there's a romance between Ke Huy Quan who is over 50 and the main character
- 11:02who is like early 30s or the main female lead.
- 11:06I don't know why you can't have women female characters, women in films.
- 11:13I don't know why you can't have women in films who are somewhat near the age of the male
- 11:17leads they're supposed to be romancing.
- 11:20It bugs me.
- 11:21And it's annoying.
- 11:22Lover it's fine, not great.
- 11:25I would wait for video for sure.
- 11:28Even then I'm not sure I would pay to watch it.
- 11:30If it comes on a streaming service that you already have you can check it out if you like
- 11:33some dumb kung fu.
- 11:35In terms of games, I don't know what game would go with it maybe kick ass but I don't have
- 11:41a lot of games about like brawling or revenge.
- 11:45So vengeance I guess would be another one that I haven't played but seems like it would
- 11:48fit.
- 11:49So we have the menu.
- 11:50I didn't know much about the menu at all.
- 11:52I just knew it was a sort of dark thriller and it was about an exclusive restaurant.
- 11:58Boy I really like this movie.
- 12:00Rafe finds plays a high high end chef and several of the characters play people going to this
- 12:06extremely exclusive restaurant where things start to go terribly, terribly wrong.
- 12:11The style of the movie is very precise.
- 12:15It's beautifully shot.
- 12:16It feels very deliberate.
- 12:18The casting is impeccable.
- 12:20Lots of really smart and interesting people on screen.
- 12:24Really compelling narrative choices throughout.
- 12:28I don't want to tell you too much about it because if you haven't seen it you should watch
- 12:32it without knowing too much more.
- 12:34But it's a dark thriller set at a fancy fans restaurant.
- 12:38That's the menu.
- 12:39Boy I don't know what game would go with that.
- 12:42Probably fiasco maybe or dread.
- 12:46It might be a good one.
- 12:47It would be kind of a weird adventure but you could play a dread game sort of themed around
- 12:52the menu or the menu and I think that would work pretty well.
- 12:55The last movie I watched in February was another repeat like Watchmen.
- 12:59I watched again the imitation game.
- 13:02I really like movies about people solving complicated problems and lately I'm sure you can figure
- 13:08out why.
- 13:09I really enjoyed stories about people besting the Nazis.
- 13:12Reminding us that the Nazis are terrible and pointing to how hope and ingenuity and collaboration
- 13:18can allow us to defeat them.
- 13:19Which is something I love to see.
- 13:21So I know the movie is a little bit complicated in terms of the way that Alan Turing is depicted
- 13:28and the idea about the way that his romantic life particularly happened.
- 13:34But overall I think the imitation game is a really compelling story about how the British
- 13:41forces collaborated to crack the enigma machine and probably one of the main factors in the
- 13:48allies winning the war.
- 13:49So if you haven't seen enigma or the imitation game you should.
- 13:53Obviously the game would go with that would be Turing machine.
- 13:56A game with deductive reasoning and punch cards.
- 13:59So get on that.
- 14:00Well that's about it for me today.
- 14:02I hope that you've seen some of those movies and enjoyed them.
- 14:04I'd love to hear which ones.
- 14:06You can share that knowledge over on boardgame geek and guild 3269.
- 14:11I would love to hear what you think of those movies.
- 14:15Well thanks for joining me on my walk today.
- 14:16I hope you're next walk as a supposant as mine was.
- 14:19Bye bye.
