Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Transitioning From Mental Consciousness to Spiritual Consciousness While Controlling the Vital Nature
Transcript
- 0:01The mind provides a filter to manage and control the vital
- 0:05forces to a certain degree. While it is not perfect, without
- 0:10it, an individual can become subject to whatever vital energy
- 0:13is active and rising up within him.
- 0:17At the same time, the mind acts as a limitation on the ability
- 0:21of the individual to shift the standpoint to the spiritual
- 0:24level of existence. Those who take up spiritual
- 0:28practices thus have to navigate the issue of how to move beyond
- 0:33the mind while not simultaneously becoming a victim
- 0:38of the resurgence of vital energies.
- 0:40No longer restrained by the mental control, the spiritual
- 0:45consciousness operates from an entirely different standpoint
- 0:48than the mental consciousness. It is capable in its own yet
- 0:53different way to manage the vital forces.
- 0:57So the real issue becomes one of how to make the transition from
- 1:02the mental level to the spiritual level without being
- 1:05overwhelmed. In Questions and Answers 1929,
- 1:10the mother writes quote. The first effect of yoga,
- 1:14however, is to take away the mental control, and the hungers
- 1:19that lie dormant are suddenly set free.
- 1:22They rush up and invade the being.
- 1:25What you should do is to keep the thing away from you, to
- 1:28disassociate from it, take as little notice of it as possible,
- 1:32and even if you happen to think of it, to remain indifferent and
- 1:38unconcerned. End Quote.
- 1:42The mother adds, Quote. This is much more difficult than
- 1:46to sit upon a difficulty. It is much more difficult to
- 1:50stand back from the difficulty than to sit upon it, to look at
- 1:54it as something which does not concern you, which does not
- 1:57interest you, does not belong to you, which belongs to the world
- 2:01and not to you. But it is only by doing this
- 2:05that you can succeed. This demands a kind of
- 2:09liberation of spirit and a confidence in your inner being.
- 2:14You must believe that if you take the right attitude, it is
- 2:18the best that will happen to you.
- 2:21But if you are afraid when something unpleasant happens to
- 2:24you, then you can do nothing. You must have this confidence
- 2:28within you. Whatever the difficulty,
- 2:31whatever the obstacle, most of the time when something
- 2:35unpleasant happens, you say, is it going to increase?
- 2:40What other accident is yet going to happen?
- 2:43And so on. You must tell yourself these
- 2:47things are not mine, they belong to the subconscious world.
- 2:51To be sure, I have nothing to do with them, and if they come
- 2:55again to seize me, I am going to give a fight.
- 2:58Naturally, you will answer that this is easy to say, but
- 3:03difficult to do. But if you truly take this
- 3:06attitude of confidence, there is no difficulty that you will not
- 3:10be able to conquer. Anxiety makes the difficulty
- 3:14greater. End Quote Reference Srioro Bindu
