- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hey team. Thanks for being here today.
- 0:25In this episode, we are going to talk about a story and a common
- 0:30theme that has come up before in the Impact Rating Podcast.
- 0:33We've done episodes on this before, but it's been surfacing
- 0:36again lately with my coaching clients quite often.
- 0:39And because it's such a common theme, I think it deserves a
- 0:42little more attention right now in the world, especially during
- 0:45a time where there seems to be a lot of discontent with the world
- 0:48at large. And a lot of people are saying
- 0:52that they're struggling with their mental health and feeling
- 0:54a little discouraged in general. What we're talking about today
- 0:59is this idea of playing small in your life.
- 1:03The first time I ever thought about this idea of playing small
- 1:07was when I was in my late 20s. I just graduated from my
- 1:10master's program and I was, I was at a self development
- 1:14conference during a time in my life where I was probably the
- 1:18most lost and feeling the most stuck that I'd ever been.
- 1:23And at this conference, one of the speakers was talking about
- 1:27taking action and stepping into your power.
- 1:30And at one point he made direct eye contact with me and asked
- 1:34the question to the crowd, where are you playing small in your
- 1:38life? And the reason this shook me up
- 1:41so much is not just because he seemed to be directly staring
- 1:45into my soul, but because at this point in my life, I was
- 1:50playing small in dozens of ways. I had just finished three years
- 1:55of year round intensive Graduate School.
- 1:58I'd just taken 6 board exams. I was trying to start a clinical
- 2:01practice. I was trying to move out of my
- 2:03parents house and be an adult. I was struggling financially.
- 2:08I was just feeling really lost and honestly pretty depressed.
- 2:13I wasn't taking great care of myself.
- 2:15I did not have my health habits dialed in.
- 2:18I wasn't sleeping. I overall was just struggling.
- 2:23But the way that I felt I was playing small the most was the
- 2:26fact that internally I was blaming a lot of my
- 2:29circumstances on external things.
- 2:32I wasn't taking ownership of my life.
- 2:34I was very much feeling like a victim to things, even though on
- 2:37the outside I made it look like I had it all together.
- 2:41And for some reason this phrase, Where are you playing small in
- 2:45your life? It deeply resonated with me in
- 2:48that moment. It struck a nerve of the very
- 2:51powerful chord. And as a result of that
- 2:54conference, in that moment, having that insight that I was
- 2:58playing small in so many different ways, I started to
- 3:01make changes and shift things in my world so that I was working
- 3:05towards becoming the real version of myself.
- 3:09A much bigger, more powerful version of myself that I knew I
- 3:12could be, but I just wasn't stepping into it for so many
- 3:16different reasons. And this sentiment comes up with
- 3:20clients so often. The truth is, the idea of
- 3:24playing small in your life, it has to do with a couple of
- 3:27different things. First, it has to do with
- 3:31potential. It really strikes the chord of
- 3:34living up to your potential. We all know that we have the
- 3:36potential to do incredible things, to have incredible
- 3:39impact, but there's so much stuff that holds us back.
- 3:44The other thing is the fact that many of us live with so much
- 3:48fear, and the fear is running the show.
- 3:52For every person that I coach on this particular theme, the idea
- 3:56of playing small shows up differently.
- 3:58Recently, I had a client who said he didn't feel deserving of
- 4:03feeling good in his life, especially in comparison to some
- 4:06other people in his life who weren't faring as well.
- 4:09And we're dealing with really difficult circumstances.
- 4:13Another client shared that she was feeling really overwhelmed
- 4:16in her business with the amount of tasks and work that she
- 4:19needed to do, and she was feeling paralyzed about how to
- 4:22really get into effective action so that she was moving the
- 4:25needle and finishing projects and such.
- 4:28For both of these clients, we got into this conversation about
- 4:31the idea of playing small in your life.
- 4:34Because at the heart of playing small lies all the limiting
- 4:37beliefs that we that we hold to be true about ourselves and all
- 4:40the saboteurs, all those negative stories that orbit our
- 4:44being and all the fear that exists and runs in the
- 4:48background. And it does look different for
- 4:50everybody because it does depend on the person and what limiting
- 4:54beliefs they hold to be true about themselves.
- 4:56Sometimes there's limiting beliefs around money.
- 4:59Sometimes it's about failure. Sometimes it's about worthiness
- 5:02or being liked. Sometimes it's old patterns that
- 5:06are trying to keep us safe. Sometimes people have just
- 5:10forgotten how powerful they are and how amazing they are, and
- 5:13they truly don't feel like they could play any bigger.
- 5:17But in the majority of the situations where we play small
- 5:21in our lives, the root feeling underneath it all is fear.
- 5:25It's it's that old guy again. It's almost always fear.
- 5:30And when fear runs the show, we don't take the risks that we
- 5:33need to take. We don't put ourselves out
- 5:35there. We don't have the hard
- 5:36conversations or take action on the things that we know will
- 5:40help us get to our goals. We don't do it, team.
- 5:43We don't. We just wait around and we
- 5:45convince. Ourselves that there's.
- 5:471,000,000 Reasons why we can't do the thing we want to do, but
- 5:52it keeps US playing small. And the thing that sucks about
- 5:56that is that when we're playing small, we can feel it and it
- 6:00feels really uncomfortable. When you have potential that is
- 6:04unrealized, it becomes pain, man.
- 6:08Just just hearing the phrase you're playing small in your
- 6:11life, that brings up a feeling for me that makes me tense up.
- 6:15I don't know if you feel that in you, but I feel constricted when
- 6:18I hear that phrase because I don't like the idea that I
- 6:22wouldn't be showing up in a big way in my own life.
- 6:26We as humans want the expansion. We want growth.
- 6:30We want progress and novelty and newness.
- 6:33We don't want stagnation and stuckness.
- 6:37And so in these conversations, we almost always come around to
- 6:39the question, well, what do we do about it?
- 6:41How do we shift from playing small to taking up more space or
- 6:44playing a little bit bigger? And for me, I always think about
- 6:48this question and this is an incredible level setting
- 6:51question that I ask myself. I say, Steph, where are you
- 6:54playing small right now? I almost always know the answer.
- 6:58By the way, when I ask this question, I think we seem to
- 7:01have an intuition about where our potential lies and where we
- 7:04are not stepping into it. So just asking that question is
- 7:07often so revealing. I also find it really powerful
- 7:12to ask myself the follow up question, what would it look
- 7:15like to play big right now? Because guess what?
- 7:19We also have an intuition about what it would look like to take
- 7:22up more space or show up with more confidence or really like
- 7:26knock one out of the park. I can feel both of those
- 7:29questions in my body. Where are you playing small?
- 7:33There's the constriction and the stuckness.
- 7:36And then asking what would it look like to play big right now?
- 7:39That's when I can start to feel some spaciousness and expansion
- 7:43and truthfully, excitement to think about the possibility and
- 7:47the potential there. Just a little bit of curiosity.
- 7:50When you allow it in, it can change the whole game.
- 7:54When you challenge your own beliefs about something, it
- 7:56creates space for new ideas to come in.
- 8:00When you challenge your limiting beliefs that you can't do
- 8:02something or take a risk or accomplish something, you start
- 8:06to create new ideas in your brain about what could be
- 8:09possible. That's the expansion.
- 8:11That's how you start to play a little bigger.
- 8:15It's similar to this idea that I was referencing a couple weeks
- 8:18ago in a podcast when I shared that my coach had challenged me
- 8:22to ask myself this question. What would it look like if this
- 8:25were easy right now? She gave me that challenge.
- 8:29It's probably a month ago. What would it look like if this
- 8:32were easy right now? Because of what I'm going
- 8:34through in my life, there's so much expectation that there's
- 8:37all this hard, that everything is going to be hard.
- 8:41And she challenged me to think of it differently, invited a new
- 8:44perspective in. And this question alone
- 8:47challenges the idea that things have to be hard or tedious or
- 8:50difficult. Just asking the question creates
- 8:53curiosity, and it then allows more space for new ideas to come
- 8:58in. Now, sometimes in conversations
- 9:02about this, there's something funny that can happen.
- 9:04I've had some clients try to talk me out of this idea, try to
- 9:09talk me out of the idea of taking up space and playing
- 9:11bigger. They sort of associate it as a
- 9:14negative thing. We sometimes associate taking up
- 9:18space or playing big with being loud or burdensome or intrusive.
- 9:23Hell no, team, That's not what this is about.
- 9:26That's some BS resistance and limiting beliefs that's showing
- 9:31up in disguise, the disguise of what's more proper or what's
- 9:35more acceptable. But that's not what this is
- 9:37about. When I'm talking about with
- 9:40taking up space and playing a little bigger, I'm talking about
- 9:44sharing your gifts with the world and stepping into your
- 9:47full power so that you can shine.
- 9:49You got to light this place up with your energy and your spirit
- 9:52and your gifts. And when you play small, you
- 9:55just dampen all of that. And frankly, that's a really low
- 9:59frequency place to be. That's not comfortable.
- 10:02People aren't drawn to those in the world who are dampening
- 10:06their gifts and existing at low frequency.
- 10:09It's not inspiring. It's not attractive
- 10:12energetically. No, people want to be around
- 10:16other people who have great energy, who vibrate at a high
- 10:19frequency, who light up a room when they walk into it.
- 10:23You might describe them as magnetic or good energy or good
- 10:27vibes, whatever it might be. But that's what I mean when I
- 10:29say taking up space and playing bigger.
- 10:33It can also be about believing in yourself.
- 10:35It can be about taking bold action.
- 10:37It can be about having hard conversations so that you can
- 10:40get rid of conflict in your life.
- 10:42It can be about setting boundaries so that you eliminate
- 10:45chaos and frenetic energy from other people.
- 10:49It can simply be about claiming what you want.
- 10:53It can be about taking ownership of your life, taking ownership
- 10:56of your circumstances, and personal responsibility for
- 11:00everything that is in your sphere.
- 11:02All of those examples are ways that you can play bigger.
- 11:05It doesn't always equate to being loud or the biggest energy
- 11:09in the room. Sometimes playing bigger just
- 11:12means you are stepping into a more powerful, impactful version
- 11:16of yourself. And that's what I want for you.
- 11:18That's what I want for every single person listening, every
- 11:21person that I coach with, every patient that I work with.
- 11:24I want them to feel like they are living into their biggest
- 11:27potential because that is what we are born into this earth to
- 11:31do. So my challenge to you this week
- 11:34is to ask yourself, where am I playing small in my life right
- 11:37now and what would it look like if I played bigger today?
- 11:41What would it look like if I played big in this circumstance
- 11:44right now that I have deemed difficult?
- 11:46And play around with it. See what opens up for you.
- 11:48I guarantee spaciousness and expansion is coming for you and
- 11:53that's a really incredible feeling.
- 11:56So I hope that this spread on some insights for you.
- 11:58I know I'm getting passionate about this stuff, but I am
- 12:01passionate about it. I really want you to feel like
- 12:03you are the most powerful version of you.
- 12:05And sometimes we have to look at our life and say, where am I
- 12:08playing small? I still do it and I still find
- 12:11little areas where I'm holding back on a day-to-day basis.
- 12:14And that's OK. That's part of being a human.
- 12:16But the more we can work on it, the more we can step into the
- 12:19most authentic version of ourselves.
- 12:21Man, that is a powerful place to be.
- 12:23So thank you for being here and for listening.
- 12:25And as always, team, thank you for being ready to impact.
