- 1:09Speaker 5: Leggy, what's up, buddy?
- 1:12Speaker 3: How are we doing?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Doing?
- 1:14Speaker 5: Good?
- 1:14Speaker 4: Shock level on one to ten on how surprised you
- 1:19Speaker 4: are that the Broncos right now are three and two
- 1:22Speaker 4: in a sixth seed in the AFC.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I guess I'd be pretty shocked. Uh, probably a sixth.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I guess I'm a shacko leader. But things are falling
- 1:35Speaker 3: their way, I mean, and that's good for the Broncos,
- 1:39Speaker 3: and I think they're I thought their defense would be good,
- 1:43Speaker 3: but their defense is really really good right now. And
- 1:46Speaker 3: if they can stay healthy in the secondary these days,
- 1:52Speaker 3: if you have corners like they do, you're gonna be
- 1:55Speaker 3: awfully good on defense. And that gives you a chance
- 1:58Speaker 3: every week. It's one of the old just you know
- 2:02Speaker 3: adages in that in football, that defense travels, you know,
- 2:06Speaker 3: the old the old saying, and it's true, it's it's
- 2:09Speaker 3: kind of consistent, and I think that's what's gonna give
- 2:15Speaker 3: them a chance to kind of hang into all this
- 2:18Speaker 3: as they try to get their offense straightened out, and
- 2:22Speaker 3: you know, again things are falling away. Look at you
- 2:24Speaker 3: know the Saints. Uh you know now it's Spencer Rattler
- 2:28Speaker 3: at quarterback, you know, probably for next week. So they
- 2:32Speaker 3: really have gotten the breaks and they've made the most
- 2:35Speaker 3: of them.
- 2:36Speaker 4: What's the responsibility of this defense playing so well?
- 2:40Speaker 5: Is it personnel? Is a guy stepping up the vance?
- 2:44Speaker 3: I think you give advance an awful lot of credit.
- 2:46Speaker 3: And you know, I think Vance has also been you know,
- 2:51Speaker 3: he's he's done what good coaches do, which is use
- 2:54Speaker 3: all of the resources and the people around you. And
- 2:57Speaker 3: Jim Leonard's arrival as a secondary coach has helped because
- 3:02Speaker 3: Leonard's been up defensive play caller in college for a
- 3:05Speaker 3: long time. He's one of the smartest players I've ever
- 3:08Speaker 3: been around, just in his one year here. And uh,
- 3:13Speaker 3: you know, I think Vance has been again what good
- 3:16Speaker 3: coaches do it. You know, he he's taken a lot
- 3:19Speaker 3: from his time with Wade Phillips and I see it,
- 3:22Speaker 3: you know, over and over again during games, and he's
- 3:24Speaker 3: added some things Jim Leonard used at Wisconsin, Uh, particularly
- 3:29Speaker 3: in some in some pass pressures. Uh so I you know,
- 3:34Speaker 3: and knowing kind of where to put people, you know,
- 3:39Speaker 3: and they've done a good job. Adding John Franklin Myers
- 3:41Speaker 3: has helped them, you know, play everybody in the defensive
- 3:46Speaker 3: front where they belong and where they should play and
- 3:48Speaker 3: have the role they should have. And Malcolm Roach is
- 3:52Speaker 3: a rival, has done that too. And Riley Moss has
- 3:54Speaker 3: been uh not just pretty good as a first time starter,
- 3:59Speaker 3: he's and he's been really really good.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Jeff I was thinking to myself, being the offense is
- 4:04Speaker 1: gonna have to pick it up, I mean over other
- 4:05Speaker 1: twenty ninth in the National.
- 4:06Speaker 5: Football League, and blah blah blah.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I'm not so sure they do, to be honest, because
- 4:12Speaker 1: the defense is so good when you look at both
- 4:15Speaker 1: sides of the ball right now, though you've done this
- 4:17Speaker 1: a long time, how sustainable is it the way they're
- 4:22Speaker 1: winning football games?
- 4:24Speaker 3: Well, it makes your margin for air mos almost nothing.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I mean, I mean you look at everybody says, you know,
- 4:31Speaker 3: they scored thirty four against the Raiders, and that's you know,
- 4:33Speaker 3: dan points are points, it doesn't matter how you get them.
- 4:38Speaker 3: But you're not very often going to have your drive,
- 4:41Speaker 3: you know, touchdown drive of fifty yards, touchdown drive of
- 4:46Speaker 3: fifty eight yards, touchdown drive of thirty nine yards. You're
- 4:51Speaker 3: not gonna have those kind of field position, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 3: all the time in the second half, and the defense
- 4:58Speaker 3: did that in a punt return, did that. So if
- 5:01Speaker 3: you're get enough from everybody else, you're gonna be able
- 5:05Speaker 3: to put up the occasional outburst like they've been against
- 5:08Speaker 3: the Raiders just because of field position and you know,
- 5:13Speaker 3: defensive failings on their part. But you know, it's a
- 5:17Speaker 3: hard way to live. You can live it. I mean,
- 5:20Speaker 3: I think nobody really cares. Now, how many games the
- 5:25Speaker 3: twenty fifteen Broncos won by seven points or less, and
- 5:28Speaker 3: it was a lot of them because they lived that
- 5:32Speaker 3: way and the margin for air was really small. But
- 5:36Speaker 3: that was one of the best big moment defenses I've
- 5:39Speaker 3: ever been around. And that's what it takes to win
- 5:42Speaker 3: that way is a herculean effort. In the other things,
- 5:47Speaker 3: you don't get the easy ones. And then again, it's
- 5:51Speaker 3: just a question of margin for air. If you avoid mistakes,
- 5:55Speaker 3: don't turn it over. Yeah, you can sustain it. But
- 5:58Speaker 3: the minute you make mistakes the other side of the ball,
- 6:01Speaker 3: that's when the trouble starts.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Jeff LEAGWELDESPN dot Com with us allow me for a second,
- 6:06Speaker 4: Leggie to get nerdy. Okay, there is a pass protection
- 6:11Speaker 4: ratings composite that was put together and it combines PFF grade,
- 6:16Speaker 4: the SIS I forget what that's called, the Sports Info Solutions,
- 6:22Speaker 4: and you guys over at ESPN they've compiled these together
- 6:24Speaker 4: for offensive line grades and the Broncos right now, composite
- 6:28Speaker 4: ranked number two in the league as far as pass protection.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Is that the offensive line playing better. Is that bo
- 6:35Speaker 4: Nick's getting the ball out quickly? What do you attribute
- 6:38Speaker 4: that to?
- 6:39Speaker 3: It's everything. I mean, they've gotten good play up front.
- 6:43Speaker 3: I mean, so Paul Cheski got hurt. You know, he'd
- 6:47Speaker 3: only played a couple of games, but his in our
- 6:50Speaker 3: metrix this past block win rate, and he was doing
- 6:55Speaker 3: very well among the tackles for past block win breaks rate,
- 7:00Speaker 3: you know, And you know it's just he had just
- 7:03Speaker 3: gotten in the lineup, made his first NFL start and
- 7:06Speaker 3: and all of those things. So they are getting good
- 7:09Speaker 3: play even with the injuries they've had. And you know,
- 7:14Speaker 3: they don't put the ball down the field very much.
- 7:16Speaker 3: You know, they've got two completions longer than thirty yards
- 7:19Speaker 3: and one of them is a trick play. So the
- 7:22Speaker 3: ball's coming out very quickly, you know, even even when
- 7:26Speaker 3: they're running the offense the way they want to. Right now,
- 7:30Speaker 3: they're basically playing offense in a rectangle, you know, near
- 7:34Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage, and that's going to make it
- 7:36Speaker 3: hard to rush Nixt And he's he's he's very good
- 7:40Speaker 3: at at avoiding sacks. He knows when the trouble's getting
- 7:44Speaker 3: there and he's very decisive about getting the ball out
- 7:47Speaker 3: of his hands when it does, and you know he
- 7:50Speaker 3: can run some when he has to. I think, you know,
- 7:55Speaker 3: there are some personnel guys around the league who don't
- 7:57Speaker 3: think he should fall in love with that too much.
- 7:59Speaker 3: But you know, that's a that's another topic, but it's
- 8:04Speaker 3: all of all of the all of the above. And
- 8:07Speaker 3: you know we saw in the first two games when
- 8:09Speaker 3: he lets the pressure get to him, he has a
- 8:13Speaker 3: much more difficult time. And I think even Sunday when
- 8:18Speaker 3: the sacks came early and he was getting some pressure,
- 8:21Speaker 3: there are much harder time playing offense than they did
- 8:24Speaker 3: in the second half when he was much cleaner. About that.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Back to your article that you wrote about bo Nix
- 8:30Speaker 1: and his development, I thought it was very good. Obviously
- 8:33Speaker 1: I read everything that you write, but the opposing general manager,
- 8:37Speaker 1: how Nix is getting things done the way that Sean
- 8:39Speaker 1: wants them done, and he's shown some toughness. Accuracy worries
- 8:43Speaker 1: you a bit because he's not pushing the ball down
- 8:45Speaker 1: field much and still the accuracy isn't always there. But look,
- 8:49Speaker 1: he's in that position blah blah blah. So does that
- 8:52Speaker 1: is that? Is that a opposing GM saying I don't
- 8:55Speaker 1: if he's really that good or the long term guy,
- 8:59Speaker 1: or is he saying, Okay, he's running what Sean wants
- 9:02Speaker 1: to run and he's growing as a quarterback, or is
- 9:04Speaker 1: it somewhere in the middle, really.
- 9:07Speaker 3: In the middle mode. I mean that, you know, I
- 9:09Speaker 3: think it's a common feeling among personnel guys I talked to,
- 9:14Speaker 3: and you know, you take it all with uh, you know,
- 9:19Speaker 3: sort of the attitude of you know, people with other
- 9:22Speaker 3: teams are often going to be critical of guys they
- 9:24Speaker 3: don't have right But you know, I think some of
- 9:27Speaker 3: this and I fall in this camp. I think his
- 9:31Speaker 3: footwork is a little spotty right now, and I think
- 9:34Speaker 3: that is leading to some of the accuracy issues. Now again,
- 9:39Speaker 3: sixty percent, you know, fifteen years ago would have been
- 9:44Speaker 3: you know, nobody would have even raised an eyebrow. It
- 9:47Speaker 3: would have been, oh, that's pretty good. But these days,
- 9:50Speaker 3: sixty percent puts you in twenty seventh, twenty eighth, twenty
- 9:53Speaker 3: ninth in the league, which is where he is in
- 9:56Speaker 3: most categories. And I think personally and people can take
- 10:02Speaker 3: it with a grain of salt or whatever, you know,
- 10:04Speaker 3: Timmy the sports writer, but it's a footwork issue. You know,
- 10:08Speaker 3: there's there's a lot of fade away in this game.
- 10:11Speaker 3: There's a lot of side arms slaying, there's a lot
- 10:13Speaker 3: of you know, backing out and throwing it. And you
- 10:17Speaker 3: know that's very common for young players. I mean, you know,
- 10:21Speaker 3: Drew Locke in it a lot. Uh. You know, guys,
- 10:25Speaker 3: guys do like to change the arm angle. Now, there
- 10:27Speaker 3: was you know, there wasn't time in the league when
- 10:30Speaker 3: a consistent release point was like you know, job one
- 10:33Speaker 3: of a quarterback. But these days, coaches, quarterback coaches are
- 10:38Speaker 3: a little more you know, open to the idea of
- 10:41Speaker 3: the changing arm angle because a lot of the best
- 10:43Speaker 3: quarterbacks in the league do it a lot. But I
- 10:47Speaker 3: think we still haven't seen I don't think you know,
- 10:51Speaker 3: what's his delivery, what's his repeatable delivery down to down,
- 10:55Speaker 3: game to game, you know, over and over again. What's
- 10:58Speaker 3: the delivery he really eyes on just to make the
- 11:02Speaker 3: routine throws.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Uh.
- 11:04Speaker 3: And I don't think we've seen that yet. And frankly,
- 11:07Speaker 3: that's you know, probably okay with the Broncos because he's
- 11:10Speaker 3: he's just in it, you know, five games into his
- 11:13Speaker 3: first season starting. But eventually, I think the footwork is
- 11:17Speaker 3: gonna have to be cleaner, and he's going to consistently
- 11:21Speaker 3: be you know, a tight window thrower, and and he's
- 11:24Speaker 3: not right now.
- 11:25Speaker 4: A couple of quick questions for you, Legy number one
- 11:27Speaker 4: to the game this weekend the Chargers just they're coming
- 11:30Speaker 4: off a bye week. Justin Herbert has not had a
- 11:33Speaker 4: two hundred yard passing game yet this season.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Why is that?
- 11:37Speaker 3: Because Jim Harbaughs a coach now, you know, welcome to
- 11:40Speaker 3: the show, you know, And I think what Jim will
- 11:43Speaker 3: do is sell him on the idea. You know what
- 11:45Speaker 3: he sold the guys in San Francisco. You want to
- 11:48Speaker 3: win or not? You know, you tell me because I think,
- 11:52Speaker 3: you know, we we've seen Mahomes do Mahomes things this year,
- 11:56Speaker 3: but they've also won. You know, they beat the charge
- 11:59Speaker 3: of seventeen, you know, with one explosive play in the game. So, uh,
- 12:06Speaker 3: I think it's I think it's probably he and Harbaugh
- 12:08Speaker 3: sort of getting used to each other. And you know,
- 12:11Speaker 3: Greg Norman's their offensive coordinator and he was the Ravens
- 12:15Speaker 3: coordinator when they routinely led the league in rushing not passing.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Uh So, you know a lot of their offenses built
- 12:22Speaker 3: around physicality in the end game now and and you
- 12:26Speaker 3: know now Harbaugh is you know, he played the position
- 12:29Speaker 3: a long time. He will set Herbert Lewis at some point.
- 12:33Speaker 3: And some of it's the injury. You can tell when
- 12:35Speaker 3: he moves, uh, you know it's it's he's not one
- 12:39Speaker 3: hundred percent even before you know this latest one. So
- 12:44Speaker 3: I think there may have been something going on, you
- 12:46Speaker 3: know before or you know, I'm not positive they are
- 12:50Speaker 3: of information other people don't have. But he he just
- 12:53Speaker 3: wasn't moving the way he was or the way I've
- 12:57Speaker 3: seen him before.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Well this leg wald, How does the team that's lost
- 13:02Speaker 1: two in a row on a buy maybe getting a
- 13:04Speaker 1: little bit healthier, Okay, fine, come into a stadium of
- 13:07Speaker 1: a team that's won three in a row and be
- 13:09Speaker 1: a three point favorite.
- 13:10Speaker 5: How does that happen?
- 13:12Speaker 3: Because odds makers like offense most, they like points, and
- 13:17Speaker 3: the Broncos don't score many of them. Neither do the
- 13:22Speaker 3: Chargers exactly right, But you know, again, I think you know,
- 13:27Speaker 3: just the people I know in the business of betting
- 13:33Speaker 3: will always tip the scales to quarterbacks and you know
- 13:37Speaker 3: other things. And they're the top scoring defense in the
- 13:40Speaker 3: league too, So as good as the Broncos have bet
- 13:43Speaker 3: on the on defense, the Chargers have been a little better.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Just really quick here, Leggy got about thirty seconds. Have
- 13:50Speaker 4: you ever seen a coach purp blocked by security out
- 13:52Speaker 4: of his building? And second of all, do you believe
- 13:54Speaker 4: Aaron Rodgers that he had nothing to do with the
- 13:56Speaker 4: firing of Robert Salah?
- 13:59Speaker 3: I do? And and the you know, he didn't call
- 14:01Speaker 3: Woody Johnson and say fire Robert Salah. I believe that
- 14:06Speaker 3: he may have expressed drumblings or misgivings at some point,
- 14:10Speaker 3: But I don't think many players have the jews to
- 14:14Speaker 3: go the owner and say fire the coach right now
- 14:17Speaker 3: and do it for the first time in the history
- 14:19Speaker 3: of your ownership during the season. So but and he complained,
- 14:24Speaker 3: probably you know, I don't know that. But and guess what,
- 14:28Speaker 3: when you get fired, they always perk walk you, I
- 14:31Speaker 3: got niche for you. They take you right out to
- 14:34Speaker 3: your car, and you plan. They schedule a day when
- 14:37Speaker 3: you can come pick up your Stuff's.
- 14:39Speaker 4: Jeff Lakewell ESPN dot com to it is every Thursday

- 14:42Speaker 5: Thank you, leg you appreciate it.
