- 0:10Speaker 1: I'll do better tomorrow. We introspect, look at the week
- 0:13Speaker 1: that was, what work, what didn't? How are we doing
- 0:15Speaker 1: where is it all falling apart? What are we doing right?
- 0:18Speaker 1: How can we do it better tomorrow? As parents? It's
- 0:20Speaker 1: kind of like our news day really and hopefully you
- 0:23Speaker 1: get some inspiration for how you can do it better
- 0:25Speaker 1: tomorrow in your family. Today we've got minted kids, we've
- 0:32Speaker 1: got four year olds and pronouns, ABC interviews about scooters
- 0:37Speaker 1: in fact, interviews everywhere about e scooters and the man box,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and a whole lot more. Oh plus slowing down, having
- 0:43Speaker 1: operations and getting the kids involved in the kitchen when
- 0:45Speaker 1: they don't want to do a thing. It's a jam
- 0:48Speaker 1: packed podcast and all that plus more is coming up next.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to the Happy Families Podcast. Real parenting
- 0:57Speaker 1: solutions every single day. This is Australia's most downloaded parenting podcast.
- 1:01Speaker 1: My name stops Justin Coulson. I'm here with my wife,
- 1:04Speaker 1: missus Happy Families, mum to our six kids. Kylie. How
- 1:08Speaker 1: is the energy? How are you feeling I'm slowly coming back.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Been a tough week.
- 1:13Speaker 2: It has been.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about that in just a sec.
- 1:16Speaker 1: But first, as always, it's some housekeeping. We used to
- 1:19Speaker 1: do this thing called this Week in Parenting. I love
- 1:25Speaker 1: it when JAYI does that. It makes me sound like
- 1:28Speaker 1: I'm one of those boys prote your elchies. This Week
- 1:32Speaker 1: in Parenting. Heaps of stuff to talk about, Kylie, I
- 1:34Speaker 1: kind of. I'm I'm just going to start the first
- 1:38Speaker 1: thing that i want to share is that I've appeared
- 1:39Speaker 1: on a brand new podcast that's called Minted Kids with
- 1:42Speaker 1: Nicole Peterson McKinnon. It's available wherever you get your podcasts,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and it's about kids and money management. If you've ever
- 1:48Speaker 1: wanted to know how to talk to kids about money,
- 1:50Speaker 1: Nicole's the expert, but she thought that I could offer
- 1:52Speaker 1: some stuff. Check this out. She's shared a couple of
- 1:55Speaker 1: clips on Instagram, and this one caught my attention. They
- 1:58Speaker 1: paid ten percent board, okay, so whatever they earn, it's
- 2:01Speaker 1: ten percent. I remember one day my third daughter came
- 2:04Speaker 1: home and she put four dollars fifty in my hand
- 2:07Speaker 1: and she said, enjoy spending the four dollars fifty dad.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Was there quite a lot of bitterness?
- 2:12Speaker 1: She was dead absolutely. Yeah, She's like, what are you
- 2:15Speaker 1: gonna do with my four dollars fifty?
- 2:16Speaker 2: And what did you do with it?
- 2:17Speaker 3: Well?
- 2:17Speaker 1: I said to her, it's not your business what I'm
- 2:19Speaker 1: going to do with it. You pay tempercent board. We
- 2:20Speaker 1: want you to learn these important life lessons. And that's
- 2:23Speaker 1: where it stopped.
- 2:23Speaker 2: And did you do it like that?
- 2:24Speaker 1: Because that made that was a bit withering. That was
- 2:27Speaker 1: a bit I thought that was. Then there's the I'm
- 2:30Speaker 1: your dad and I know what's good for you and
- 2:32Speaker 1: one day you'll thank me ten percent. All the linees
- 2:36Speaker 1: happening now. I mean, I don't know if I've never
- 2:38Speaker 1: said it like that, but that's kind of the that's
- 2:40Speaker 1: the insinuation and what we do and the children don't know.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And I really hope that nobody who knows our family
- 2:46Speaker 1: tells our children after listen to this podcast. Yeah, so
- 2:49Speaker 1: that's the Minted Kids podcast, Kylie's it's a lot of fun.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It sounds good. Huh.
- 2:53Speaker 2: We caught up with Nicole recently just to it was
- 2:56Speaker 2: only this week during Tuesday morning, Yeah, and have a
- 2:59Speaker 2: chat and I commented to it that conversations about money
- 3:04Speaker 2: with kids are so much more fun than all the
- 3:06Speaker 2: emotional grams that comes with being a paranormal girls and
- 3:10Speaker 2: she just cracked up. She thought it was hilarious.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah, totally something else that I wanted to share with you.
- 3:15Speaker 1: You're gonna love this. We have not sat down with
- 3:17Speaker 1: our daughter Emily, who loves K Pop Demon Hunters, but
- 3:20Speaker 1: I got to share this with you. This is just
- 3:22Speaker 1: recently hit Sesame Street and it's worth sharing on the
- 3:25Speaker 1: Happy Family's pod. Hi.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Yah, me so excited because me finally get to meet
- 3:31Speaker 3: me heroes. Yes me, even consider me so the fourth
- 3:35Speaker 3: member of the K Pop Cookie Hunters.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah, Cookie Monster, We're the K Pop demon Hunters, not
- 3:43Speaker 1: cookie Hunters.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Wait a minute, so you not hunt for cookies and
- 3:46Speaker 3: save the world one snacky.
- 3:48Speaker 2: At a time.
- 3:49Speaker 3: No, what about you hit song We're eating of Bob
- 3:54Speaker 3: Biz our moment. You know together we're snacking It gonna
- 3:58Speaker 3: be gold.
- 3:58Speaker 1: And cookie it. Oh, Kylie, I love this. So you
- 4:02Speaker 1: know you're big when not only do you have the
- 4:04Speaker 1: number one movie on Netflix, but you're on Sesame Street
- 4:06Speaker 1: with Cookie Monster and he's singing your song K Pop
- 4:09Speaker 1: Demon Hunters. I just want to put on their housekeeping
- 4:12Speaker 1: isn't important. No, does it help you to be a
- 4:14Speaker 1: bit of parent by knowing it? Yes? If your kids
- 4:16Speaker 1: love K pop Demon Hunters, it could just be a
- 4:18Speaker 1: fun bonding moment. I wanted to share that. Okay, next
- 4:21Speaker 1: thing that we need to tick off here. My brand
- 4:24Speaker 1: new book cover for The Book Boys has just landed
- 4:27Speaker 1: in my email this week. My publisher sent it through.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I wanted to have the very serious picture of me
- 4:32Speaker 1: that a photographer took some years ago on the cover.
- 4:35Speaker 1: They said that I looked too sultry, they said, I
- 4:38Speaker 1: look centraal, I'm staring with this angry face, my chin
- 4:43Speaker 1: resting on my hands. It's a black and white photo.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Oh honey, you're all mine. I can't share you with
- 4:50Speaker 2: anyone else.
- 4:50Speaker 1: They didn't want it. They've put together. I mean, I
- 4:54Speaker 1: told them. I just said, I'm going to be really
- 4:56Speaker 1: fussy about this cover. This this matters so much a
- 5:00Speaker 1: book and interacting with a publisher about the blurb on
- 5:03Speaker 1: the back and the like, the kind words at something.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Title, the title subject, the whole thing. We've done this
- 5:11Speaker 2: a lot of times now, and it's been such a
- 5:14Speaker 2: painful process.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Yeah, tenth book, eleventh book, something like that I'm just
- 5:17Speaker 1: so pleased with this cover. It Like I looked at
- 5:21Speaker 1: it and I was like, you wanted to hate it?
- 5:22Speaker 1: I wanted to hate it. I looked and I was like,
- 5:25Speaker 1: I like that a lot more than I thought I would.
- 5:27Speaker 1: And then I was like, I need to think about this.
- 5:29Speaker 1: And then I showed it to a couple of people,
- 5:30Speaker 1: including you, and the feedback was that's pretty good. I
- 5:34Speaker 1: was like, oh, I know, exactly, really good. So the
- 5:37Speaker 1: book Boys by Me Doctor Justin Cilson comes out May
- 5:41Speaker 1: June next year. We're gonna have pre orders available. We'll
- 5:44Speaker 1: tell you all about it. Just monitor watch the website,
- 5:46Speaker 1: watch the Facebook page, listen to the podcast. But the
- 5:49Speaker 1: cover is that like and the can I please read
- 5:52Speaker 1: you the blurb on the back. I know that we're
- 5:54Speaker 1: going to get told of it tomorrow soon, but I
- 5:56Speaker 1: feel like I've really got to this is this is
- 6:00Speaker 1: exciting for me, like properly exciting. Can I read it?
- 6:02Speaker 1: Can I read it?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Can I? Can? I? Can? I you're asking my permission?
- 6:05Speaker 2: It's your podcast.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Well it's our podcast. Come on, it's the Happy Family Podcast.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I see if you're going to listen to me right now?
- 6:11Speaker 1: Okay, Well here's what the back cover says for the
- 6:15Speaker 1: book Boys by Me. He's disappearing behind the closed door,
- 6:19Speaker 1: lost in screens, making choices that keep you up at night.
- 6:22Speaker 1: He's navigating a world designed to confuse him, algorithms designed
- 6:25Speaker 1: to addict him, a world parents don't understand and can't
- 6:28Speaker 1: break into. The headlines scream crisis. They warn us that
- 6:32Speaker 1: boys are in deep trouble and it's getting worse. But
- 6:36Speaker 1: it doesn't have to be like this. Doctor Justin Coulson
- 6:39Speaker 1: has a different story to tell. In Boys, Coulson reveals
- 6:42Speaker 1: what decades of research suggests when boys get what they
- 6:45Speaker 1: actually need, they thrive not through force or fixing, but
- 6:48Speaker 1: through connection, meaningful challenge, and someone who refuses to give
- 6:52Speaker 1: up on them. This book hands you the playbook. It
- 6:55Speaker 1: cuts through the noise with practical, research backed strategies for
- 6:59Speaker 1: the battles you're find right now, gaming, pornography, self control, friendships,
- 7:03Speaker 1: school motivation, How to discipline without destroying trust, How to
- 7:07Speaker 1: stay close when he's pushing away, but beneath the tactics
- 7:10Speaker 1: like something more powerful. A vision of masculinity worth fighting for.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Boys who help others feel safer and stronger, who creates
- 7:20Speaker 1: surplus value who become not just good men, but the
- 7:23Speaker 1: best version of themselves. I'm getting weak. Means so much
- 7:29Speaker 1: to me. I cannot tell you how much this means
- 7:31Speaker 1: to me. Oh my goodness, I'm going to throw it
- 7:33Speaker 1: to you. I'm not trying, but I am getting weepy.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Yes, because we had a conversation with a young man recently.
- 7:40Speaker 2: He was in our home and he kind of looked
- 7:42Speaker 2: at you and just said, you writing a book about boys, Like,
- 7:46Speaker 2: what gives you credibility to do this?
- 7:49Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 7:50Speaker 2: How do you answer that?
- 7:51Speaker 1: Well? I was one once upon a time. I've got
- 7:54Speaker 1: skin in the game. I think I've got more skin
- 7:56Speaker 1: in the game than almost anyone. I've got six daughters.
- 7:58Speaker 1: They're going to be marrying these boys and helping parents
- 8:03Speaker 1: to raise strong, healthy, well balanced, wonderful boys. I just
- 8:10Speaker 1: it matters. Apart from that, I know. I know for
- 8:12Speaker 1: a fact that so much of what I've done to
- 8:15Speaker 1: help parents, I hear parents of boys saying all the
- 8:17Speaker 1: time what you've shared with me has changed my family,
- 8:20Speaker 1: Like my son benefited so much from this. I've got
- 8:23Speaker 1: no doubt. This is a game changer. This is such
- 8:26Speaker 1: a game changer. I'm so excited about it.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Well, I can't wait for it to come out.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Okay, Kylie, there are two. We never have this much housekeeping,
- 8:33Speaker 1: but last week there was none, and we're paying the
- 8:35Speaker 1: price for it this week because there's so much. It's
- 8:37Speaker 1: going to be alis the whole podcast. I've done a
- 8:40Speaker 1: lot of meetia this week, been speaking about interviews about
- 8:43Speaker 1: EA scooters and e bikes and whether kids should or
- 8:46Speaker 1: should not be allowed on them. Rather than talking about
- 8:49Speaker 1: it now, let's just say that this is a hot
- 8:50Speaker 1: topic and we're going to talk about it in the
- 8:51Speaker 1: next couple of weeks on the podcast as a full episode,
- 8:54Speaker 1: especially with Christmas coming, because you can guarantee there's going
- 8:57Speaker 1: to be a whole lot of eleven twelve, thirteen, four
- 9:00Speaker 1: fourteen year old is fifteen year old saying can I
- 9:02Speaker 1: please have an e bike? Oh? And also I want
- 9:04Speaker 1: you to take the speed limit or off so that
- 9:06Speaker 1: I can go fast and do monos down the main
- 9:08Speaker 1: street like my friends. And yesterday was on The Today
- 9:11Speaker 1: Show talking about the adolescent manbox research research showing that
- 9:15Speaker 1: the more that kids buy into the gender sterio. Oh,
- 9:17Speaker 1: there's some more stuff about My Boy's book. This research
- 9:20Speaker 1: is in My Boy's Book The more that our boys
- 9:22Speaker 1: buy into the gender stereotype stuff, the more likely it
- 9:25Speaker 1: is that they're going to have mental health challenges and
- 9:27Speaker 1: behave in problematic ways. It seems that some attitudes to
- 9:30Speaker 1: do with masculinity and manhood are damaging. So it was
- 9:34Speaker 1: exciting bit of media. Last one last breaking news housekeeping
- 9:38Speaker 1: item for me to share this week. It has been
- 9:40Speaker 1: revealed Kylie, that parents are being asked whether they want
- 9:44Speaker 1: they them pronouns used for their four and five year
- 9:48Speaker 1: old children attending kindergarten in Queensland. Just putting it out there.
- 9:54Speaker 1: In this year's cohort, forty six kindergarten children around the
- 9:58Speaker 1: state were nominated by their parents as they them on
- 10:01Speaker 1: consent forms sent out by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority,
- 10:05Speaker 1: and so kindergarten teachers in Queensland have to prepare a
- 10:08Speaker 1: transition statement to help you and prepare for primary school,
- 10:10Speaker 1: providing information to their new teachers about their child's strengths
- 10:12Speaker 1: and weaknesses. But parents also have to nominate children's pronouns
- 10:17Speaker 1: as part of the process. Do you want to tell
- 10:19Speaker 1: me what you think? Or do you just want to
- 10:20Speaker 1: ask me what I think? What do you think, thanks
- 10:23Speaker 1: so much for asking for goodness sake. Seriously, everything that
- 10:26Speaker 1: we know about child development tells us that this is
- 10:28Speaker 1: a really, really bad idea. This idea, I would go
- 10:33Speaker 1: so far as to call it radical gender ideology, especially
- 10:35Speaker 1: when we're talking about four and five year old children
- 10:37Speaker 1: non binary, neither male nor female. For preschool kids, they
- 10:40Speaker 1: barely have a concept of gender anyway, then you start
- 10:43Speaker 1: talking about they them. It confuses the hell out of
- 10:46Speaker 1: the kids themselves, but it creates confusion for all of
- 10:48Speaker 1: the other kids as well. I think it's a terrible idea.
- 10:51Speaker 1: I think that there is absolutely no evidence for it
- 10:53Speaker 1: being of any benefit whatsoever. There is only evidence for
- 10:57Speaker 1: it causing problems. Now I'm not in a conservative soapbox.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I'm looking at what the psychological evidence shows us, and
- 11:02Speaker 1: there is simply none. That is, there's nothing positive about this.
- 11:07Speaker 2: I think what's most disturbing to me is that this
- 11:10Speaker 2: is not pushed by children.
- 11:11Speaker 1: No, no, no, this is no four year old correct.
- 11:13Speaker 2: This is this is saying this.
- 11:15Speaker 1: This is the QC douba, this is the QC DO
- 11:18Speaker 1: way and invested interest groups. Kids that age don't actually
- 11:23Speaker 1: understand the underlying concepts, even if you think you've explained
- 11:25Speaker 1: it to them. Damaging for the children. I think it's
- 11:27Speaker 1: damaging for the family structure. It's damaging for children's well
- 11:32Speaker 1: being and health and functionality. I would call it indoctrination
- 11:35Speaker 1: into political ideology from the age of four, and I
- 11:40Speaker 1: think it's harmful. So there you go. There's my rant.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I'm excited to have shared everything from the housekeeping good news,
- 11:45Speaker 1: bad news, and everything in between. After the break our
- 11:48Speaker 1: older bet. It's tomorrow in record time. But we've had
- 11:51Speaker 1: some really great learning this week and I can't wait
- 11:53Speaker 1: to share it with you. It will inspire you to
- 11:55Speaker 1: make you family happier. That's next. You're back. This is
- 12:05Speaker 1: the Happy Family's podcast with Doctor Justin Coulson and missus
- 12:08Speaker 1: Happy Families. Kylie, Kylie, I'll do better tomorrow. I'm going
- 12:12Speaker 1: to step into it real quick. Slowing down is my
- 12:14Speaker 1: one last Saturday. So last it was last last Friday,
- 12:18Speaker 1: after we dropped the pod. You had a procedure which
- 12:24Speaker 1: pretty much has laid you flat for most of the week.
- 12:27Speaker 1: We had to prepare podcasts ahead of time so that
- 12:30Speaker 1: we could make sure that everything would work out. Okay,
- 12:32Speaker 1: you're finally back on your feet now. But on Saturday,
- 12:35Speaker 1: because you were just in what's the word, you weren't functioning.
- 12:40Speaker 1: I grabbed a couple of kids. I said, let's go
- 12:42Speaker 1: for a surf. Let's go down to the beach. They
- 12:43Speaker 1: jumped in the car, happily, swam hung out at the ocean.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Then we went to the markets and bought the fruit
- 12:48Speaker 1: and veggies and got all the groceries that we need
- 12:50Speaker 1: for the week. Came back. It was lunchtime. You were
- 12:52Speaker 1: slowly sort of opening your eyes and going, I don't
- 12:54Speaker 1: feel very good, but we just had a really slow
- 12:57Speaker 1: day and still got a lot of the important stuff done.
- 13:00Speaker 1: The kids chipped in and I don't know if it's
- 13:02Speaker 1: actually sustainable or not, but it felt really good, and
- 13:05Speaker 1: so my older bit it's moro was really simple. Sometimes
- 13:07Speaker 1: it's okay to lay flat on your back and have
- 13:09Speaker 1: a day off and let somebody else carry the load
- 13:11Speaker 1: and they can usually do it and hopefully not even
- 13:14Speaker 1: have a frantic, crazy, chaotic day.
- 13:17Speaker 2: I was aware of everything that was happening, but I
- 13:19Speaker 2: didn't have much capacity to be responsive and be involved.
- 13:25Speaker 1: But I would say you were out of it.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I heard you guys leave to go for a surf
- 13:29Speaker 2: and then I heard the commotion when you came home
- 13:32Speaker 2: and you've jumped in the pool, and I just had
- 13:37Speaker 2: this moment where I thought, this is what our family needs,
- 13:44Speaker 2: this moment, this moment in time where Dad's actually home
- 13:49Speaker 2: and he's able to be connected and be present with them,
- 13:52Speaker 2: and I actually get to take a step back. And
- 13:56Speaker 2: that step back was forced upon me, but it was
- 14:00Speaker 2: actually such a beautiful gift to everybody else as a result,
- 14:05Speaker 2: because it enabled you guys to have a moment that
- 14:08Speaker 2: probably wouldn't have happened if I was available.
- 14:11Speaker 1: It's just occur to me as well. We sat down
- 14:13Speaker 1: with the kids and said, Mum is convalescing, Mum is
- 14:16Speaker 1: not going to be in good shape. We've got three
- 14:20Speaker 1: people over the age of eighteen in this house plus
- 14:21Speaker 1: a fifteen year old. I reckon everyone can quok a
- 14:24Speaker 1: meal a night, and they've stepped up. We've actually been
- 14:26Speaker 1: eating pretty well. The kids are like, I can do
- 14:28Speaker 1: one meal this week. Yeah, that's fine, I can manage.
- 14:30Speaker 1: We've worked out what nights it'll be and they've just
- 14:32Speaker 1: stepped into the void and said, okay, we can do it.
- 14:35Speaker 1: So we're going to continue this. Whether you're unwell or
- 14:37Speaker 1: well is irrelevant.
- 14:38Speaker 2: I'm happy to convalesce as long as you.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Need me to, all right. So the take home message
- 14:43Speaker 1: really is share the load. For anyone who's listening who
- 14:48Speaker 1: doesn't have someone to share the load with, I mean
- 14:49Speaker 1: that is really really tough. But bringing the kids in,
- 14:52Speaker 1: sharing the load, having your husband, wife's, spouse, partner, whoever
- 14:55Speaker 1: it is, just lift a little. It takes so much
- 14:59Speaker 1: load off the one person who's always making the decisions
- 15:02Speaker 1: and carrying the load like such a valuable thing. And
- 15:06Speaker 1: to the degree that you can, there's some value in
- 15:08Speaker 1: slowing down, especially as we I mean, what are we
- 15:10Speaker 1: up to now, It's like the seventh of November this
- 15:13Speaker 1: time in four weeks. Everyone takes their foot off the accelerator.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Once we get to about the seventh, eight, ninth, tenth
- 15:19Speaker 1: of December, other than the Christmas chaos with trying to
- 15:24Speaker 1: do parties and gift shopping and things, we actually do
- 15:26Speaker 1: get to slow down. So let's do it. Let's sort
- 15:28Speaker 1: of get into that mindset, start a bit early.
- 15:30Speaker 2: I've been reflecting over the past week as I've had
- 15:33Speaker 2: to slow down about life as an early mum, and
- 15:37Speaker 2: you know, in a young bride and this idea that
- 15:42Speaker 2: it's my job to kind of keep the household functioning
- 15:46Speaker 2: and going and come rain, hail, shine, sickness or health.
- 15:51Speaker 2: It was up to me to keep everything moving and
- 15:55Speaker 2: I did that for a really, really long time. And
- 15:59Speaker 2: what was so beautiful this week is just number one
- 16:05Speaker 2: that I've learned that everything's not going to fall apart
- 16:09Speaker 2: if I don't step up, firstly, but secondly that as
- 16:13Speaker 2: a family, we've grown to the point where we can
- 16:16Speaker 2: recognize when somebody's down that there's opportunities for us to
