- 0:00SPEAKER_00: I'm sure you all remember the famous words that Clarence says to Mr.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Bailey, every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: And I'm not too sure about the theology of that,
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: but in the liturgy,
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: there is actually a connection between a bell ringing and wings, in some sense.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: In the Mass,
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: the first time the bell rings,
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Is at what we call the Epiclesis,
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: where the priest sort of puts his hands vertically over the offerings
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: and he's asking the Holy Spirit to come down onto the offerings in that moment.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Epiclesis is just a fancy Greek word, which means calling upon or invocation.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: So the priest is calling upon or invoking the Holy Spirit to come down.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: On to these offerings in that moment.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: So in every Mass you attend,
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: just before the consecration,
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: there's that moment,
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: the moment of the calling down of the Holy Spirit to come into this place and
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: to Transform these offerings by his transformative power.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: So that's a powerful moment.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: It's a powerful moment of the liturgy as we prepare for the consecration.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And I think it should be a powerful moment in our lives.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: We all need the Holy Spirit.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: We need the Holy Spirit to come down into our lives.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: We need the Holy Spirit to transform our lives.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: So in that moment,
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: in that particular moment of the liturgy, when,
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: you hear the bell ring or you don't hear the bell ring,
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: depending on where you are,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: but you see the priest's hands coming down vertically over the gifts
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: and you hear his words calling down the Holy Spirit.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Ask the Holy Spirit to come down.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: We've talked about that before, how we are the bread.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: The bread symbolizes us,
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: all of us broken, all of us ground down, all of us becoming a part of this offering.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: So ask the Holy Spirit to come down into the broken ground bread of your life
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: and transform your life into the presence of Christ in the world.
