- 1:06the unexplained paranormal tales of this world and possibly the
- 1:11next. Now let's get to today's story.
- 1:17It was the afternoon of October 16th, 1991.
- 1:23A 36 year old man by the name of Enrique Martinez knelt by a Moss
- 1:28covered log. He had been admiring a lovely
- 1:32looking mushroom forging for fungi.
- 1:36He placed it gently into his Wicker basket, adding it to the
- 1:40others that he had gathered. As he stood, he took in the view
- 1:45of the verdant valley below, untouched and silent, beautiful
- 1:53yet eerie at the same time. Enrique was mushroom hunting
- 1:58with his wife, Anna, and two of their friends, a couple by the
- 2:03name of Jorge and Sophia. They were exploring near an
- 2:07ancient abandoned town known as La Messura, perched high in the
- 2:13northwestern mountains of Spain. It was Jorge who had suggested
- 2:18coming here, lured by legends of hauntings and sinister folklore.
- 2:24Enrique, however, cared little for ghost stories.
- 2:28If anything, he was here for the mushrooms and the peace and
- 2:32quiet. Enrique worked as a bartender in
- 2:36the bustling port city of Tarragonia, where every night he
- 2:41was surrounded by crowds. Loud noises and voices coupled
- 2:46with the clanking of bottles and glasses was his norm.
- 2:51The peace and solitude of the mountains were a bomb for his
- 2:54chaotic life. A chance to immerse himself in
- 2:58the quiet pursuit of mushroom hunting, a hobby he truly
- 3:02enjoyed. His mind focused on finding a
- 3:06prized local mushroom known as the Bloody Milk.
- 3:09Cap didn't dwell on La Masura's dark history, albeit it may seem
- 3:15ironic given the name. But as they reach the town's
- 3:19outskirts, he felt a shift in energy.
- 3:24A prickling on ease crept over him, and he became unnerved, to
- 3:29say the least. La Misura was over 900 years
- 3:33old, its crumbling remnants littering the mountainside with
- 3:38many runes older than its memory itself.
- 3:43The town had once been home to around 300 residents, yet now
- 3:48had been deserted for decades, the last souls fleeing some 40
- 3:53years prior. As they approached the town, the
- 3:57friends paused by a rune on the town's edge and suddenly out of
- 4:02nowhere the air thickened around them and an ever growing mist
- 4:08gathered at their feet. This mist or fog and slowly
- 4:15creeped up the abandoned dirt Rd. that led through La
- 4:19Massiro's heart. At the road's end was a massive,
- 4:24dilapidated church, its presence casting a shadow over the
- 4:29overgrown cemetery behind it, as well as the murky pond brimming
- 4:34with frogs. The eerie silence was only
- 4:38occasionally broken by the distant croaks echoing through
- 4:43the mist. Jorge led the way, a mischievous
- 4:47smile on his face as he grasped Sophia's hand, pulling her
- 4:52toward the church. Enrique and Anna followed, but
- 4:57something made Enrique glance back.
- 5:00The mist had swallowed the rune behind them entirely, as if they
- 5:04had crossed an unseen threshold. With this, an inexplicable chill
- 5:10ran through him, and the air suddenly became heavy and thick.
- 5:17The mist, Jorge had said, was La Messura's infamous shroud, a fog
- 5:23that enveloped the town night after night, but here it was
- 5:28smothering them in the daylight, which bothered him.
- 5:32Yet despite this, he brushed it off and followed his friends,
- 5:38though a gnawing sense of impending doom clung to him.
- 5:42They stopped beside a peculiar rectangular stone jutting from
- 5:46the ground. Jorge placed a hand on its
- 5:49surface, his voice low and eager.
- 5:54This is the 6th stone, he said. It's one of the oldest relics
- 5:58here. They say it has dark powers.
- 6:03His voice took on a hushed, reverent tone.
- 6:07La Misura, he explained, was once a weigh station for ancient
- 6:11armies. They believed that the Six Stone
- 6:15held a magic of sorts that was capable of winning battles, but
- 6:20only for a price. Legend claimed that those who
- 6:25touched it risked being pulled into a twisted, parallel world,
- 6:31a darkened hellscape that was teeming with demonic entities.
- 6:37As Jorge relayed this, he kept his hand on the stone, grinning
- 6:43as he dared someone else to touch it.
- 6:46Sofia, uneasy, shook her head, but Anna, laughing, stepped
- 6:53forward and placed her hand on the stone.
- 6:57They held their breath, expecting something dreadful to
- 7:00happen, but nothing did. Just then, the frogs by the
- 7:06church erupted in a concophony, their croaks deafening.
- 7:13Enrique turned toward the sound, peering through the fog at the
- 7:16shadowy outline of the church. For a moment, he caught a
- 7:21glimpse of a dark figure standing in one of the windows,
- 7:26motionless and watching. The image burned into his mind,
- 7:32but yet in a blink it vanished. Was this figure real, or just a
- 7:39trick of the fog, perhaps, His imagination running wild, Before
- 7:45he could speak, Anna called to him, laughing.
- 7:49Come on, Enrique, your turn. Her voice jolted him from his
- 7:54thoughts. Pacing himself yet feeling some
- 7:59kind of pull towards the object, he reached for the 6th stone.
- 8:05The second his fingers touched it, a wave of unnatural cold
- 8:09washed over him, yet the stone burned beneath his skin.
- 8:15Time seemed to slow, as if something sinister seeped into
- 8:19his mind, something that urged him to keep touching it, to
- 8:25never let it go. In the depths of his mind, a
- 8:29small voice clinging to reason whispered frantically for him to
- 8:33let go. With great effort, he released
- 8:37the stone, his skin tingling as he backed away.
- 8:43His friends were grinning, but Sophia was pale.
- 8:47Let's leave the stone alone, she said with her voice trembling.
- 8:52We are tempting things that we don't understand.
- 8:56Jorge chuckled, trying to brush off her concern, and then LED
- 9:00them further into La Misera. As the group ventured deeper,
- 9:06the fog grew denser, smothering the world around them as though
- 9:11drawing them into its depths. Enrique couldn't shake the
- 9:16lingering dread, the feeling of someone or something watching
- 9:21them. He slowly trailed behind,
- 9:24casting weary glances at the church as they passed by the
- 9:29pond. The frog's croaking reached an
- 9:32almost unbearable volume, pulsing like a heartbeat.
- 9:38With this, Enrique's gaze drifted involuntarily toward the
- 9:43window where he had originally seen the dark figure.
- 9:47It was empty now, but he noticed something peculiar.
- 9:53He felt a pole, something coaxing him closer, daring him
- 9:58to peer inside. Despite his soul screaming, he
- 10:03obeyed, stepping toward the church, unable to resist the
- 10:09compulsion. With each step, his breath grew
- 10:13more shallow as he leaned closer and closer to the broken window,
- 10:21peering into the darkness within.
- 10:24Inside, shadows pooled in every corner, shrouding the remnants
- 10:29of pews, the pulpit, the frogs. Croaks continued to swell,
- 10:35reaching an overwhelming crescendo as his gaze locked
- 10:39onto the inky black void just beyond the altar.
- 10:44It felt as if the darkness itself was alive, twitching and
- 10:50writhing, beckoning him closer. Suddenly, a hand gripped his
- 10:56shoulder, jerking him back to reality.
- 11:00Anna was beside him, her face puzzled.
- 11:03Come on, she said, leading him toward the cemetery.
- 11:08They joined Jorge and Sophia amongst the graves, each stone
- 11:12worn and nameless. Trying to shake off the
- 11:17lingering terror, Enrique turned his focus to the headstones.
- 11:23Anna backed into an old cross, toppling it to the ground with a
- 11:27sickening crack. With the fog ever thickening
- 11:31around them, Enrique swore he heard whispers in the mist.
- 11:37They seemed faint and pleading. He glanced back at the church,
- 11:43still feeling that dark presence there, lurking, watching and
- 11:49waiting. Something in La Masira did not
- 11:52want them to leave. Jorge and Sophia turned toward
- 11:57Anna as they heard the snap of the stone breaking in two.
- 12:01Realizing what had happened, Jorge burst out laughing,
- 12:06teasing her by saying, Oh boy, now you've upset the evil
- 12:11spirits here, you better put that back together.
- 12:15Anna tried to laugh along, but panic crept in as she attempted
- 12:20to reassemble the gravestone she had accidentally broken, but the
- 12:24stone was beyond repair. Jorge continued to chuckle,
- 12:29while Sophia, standing close beside him, grew uneasy.
- 12:34Jorge, is this place truly haunted?
- 12:38She asked. Like, actually haunted?
- 12:41Her voice hushed with worry. Jorge paused, his laughter
- 12:46fading. Yeah, I think it really is.
- 12:50And with that, he launched into the legend that haunted La
- 12:54Messura in October of 1873, during a fierce civil war in the
- 13:00region of Spain, rival armies used the nearby mountainside
- 13:05caves as makeshift field hospitals.
- 13:09One night, a reverend general named Serkos, mortally wounded
- 13:15in battle, was brought into one of these caves.
- 13:19There, surrounded by his closest men, he passed away.
- 13:25His death was kept secret, revealing the loss of their
- 13:29beloved leader would crush the morale of his troops and give
- 13:33the enemy an easy victory. At dawn, Cerso's six loyal men
- 13:40carried him silently up to the cemetery in La Misura and buried
- 13:46him in a shallow grave. Knowing a villager was to be
- 13:49interred in that spot soon, they laid him under a thin layer of
- 13:54dirt to be hidden by another coffin and marked only by a
- 14:00simple unnamed headstone with a single horizontal line.
- 14:06Weeks later, 5 enemy soldiers scaled the mountain, unaware of
- 14:11Sirso's death. Convinced he was hiding in La
- 14:15Misura, they forced their way into homes, demanding the
- 14:20villagers reveal his location. The poor townspeople were
- 14:24terrified. Finally, a weary elderly man
- 14:28stepped forward and revealed Cirsos was buried behind the
- 14:34church. Suspicious, the soldiers forced
- 14:37the townspeople to dig up every grave in the cemetery to prove
- 14:42his death. Amid the chaos, the eerie sound
- 14:47of croaking frogs from a nearby pond grew louder and louder.
- 14:53Frustrated by the deafening noise, the soldiers leader
- 14:56strode to the pond, firing shots into the water to silence the
- 15:01frogs. But they're croaking only
- 15:05intensified. The soldiers finally realized
- 15:09that the only grave left undisturbed was marked by the
- 15:13simple line. The villagers warned them that
- 15:16this grave belonged to a feared witch, but the soldiers didn't
- 15:22care. They forced the villagers to dig
- 15:25it up, and when they opened the coffin, the townspeople gasped
- 15:31in horror. The witch looked as if she had
- 15:34just died, her skin unnervingly smooth and her eyes wide open,
- 15:43gazing out at them as if in warning.
- 15:48Enraged at not finding Sirsos, the soldiers dragged the witch's
- 15:52body from her coffin, hung her from a tree, and riddled her
- 15:58with bullets until the town fell silent once more.
- 16:03But as soon as they stopped shooting, they noticed that the
- 16:07frogs, which had filled the air with sound.
- 16:10We're now silent too. The soldiers, unsettled by the
- 16:16sudden stillness, fled La Misura, leaving the villagers to
- 16:21rebury the dead. When a townsperson climbed into
- 16:25the desecrated grave, they discovered another coffin below
- 16:30the secret resting place of General Sirsos.
- 16:35The curse of the Witch was said to linger over the town ever
- 16:39since, with death, disease, and failed harvest plaguing the town
- 16:47until its last residence finally abandoned it in the 1950s.
- 16:53As Jorge finished, Anna's gaze dropped to the shattered
- 16:57gravestone in her hands. A terrible realization had
- 17:01dawned on her. The headstone she had
- 17:05accidentally knocked over bore a simple horizontal line.
- 17:11She had inadvertently desecrated the witch's grave.
- 17:17Terrified, she then spotted the perfect bloody milk cap mushroom
- 17:23at the base of a nearby wall, the very type her husband
- 17:28Enrique had been hunting for the entire time the group had been
- 17:33out there. Trying not to focus on what had
- 17:36just occurred, she plucked it and turned to show him, only to
- 17:42find that he was gone. Puzzled, she called out to him
- 17:48but received no reply. Growing anxious, she turned to
- 17:53Jorge and Sophia, who, when asked, shrugged, saying that
- 17:58they hadn't seen him. Panicked, Anna sprinted out of
- 18:03the cemetery with Sophia and Jorge trailing behind her.
- 18:08In the dense fog, shadows shifted and eerie silhouettes
- 18:13loomed, but when they got close, they only found empty air.
- 18:20Sophia clung tighter to Jorge, fear building as the fog grew
- 18:25thicker and the croaking of frogs once again swelled around
- 18:30them. Following Anna's cries, Jorge
- 18:34and Sophia finally found her crouched in the churchyard,
- 18:38clutching Enrique's Wicker basket with tears streaking down
- 18:43her face as she whispered. He's gone.
- 18:49The trio spent the next hour frantically searching La Misera,
- 18:53the fog becoming blinding as darkness fell.
- 18:58When they finally conceded defeat, they would make their
- 19:01way back to civilization and report the disappearance.
- 19:07Following this, a week long search ensued, but despite the
- 19:12authority's best efforts, not a trace of Enrique was ever found.
- 19:19Months later, in January of 1992, Anna, still grieving her
- 19:25husband's disappearance, would return to Lao Misura along with
- 19:30Sophia and Jorge, determined to search once more.
- 19:36As the group passed by the old church window, they would be
- 19:40shocked by what they would see. There within the church, they
- 19:45saw six dark, hooded figures standing in a circle inside,
- 19:52motionless and silent. Anna's fear and sorrow seem to
- 19:58turn to anger, mistaking the figures for ghost hunters.
- 20:03Disrespecting the tragedy of her husband's disappearance, she
- 20:08approached the window, ready to scream at them.
- 20:12But as she approached, one of the robed figures slowly turned
- 20:17to face her. And when this occurred, it
- 20:21disturbed the poor woman, the very depths of her mourning
- 20:26soul. Anna stumbled backward.
- 20:30The figure who would turn towards her revealed that it had
- 20:34no face, instead only a swirling, inky black void
- 20:41staring into her eyes. Before the group could react,
- 20:47the silence would be shattered at the sound of galloping hooves
- 20:51erupting from behind them. This was then followed by a
- 20:56cacophony of frog croaks that grew impossibly loud.
- 21:02Spinning around, they saw only morphing fog.
- 21:07Paralyzed with fear, they would turn back towards the church,
- 21:11only to realize that the sinister robed figures had
- 21:16vanished. The three friends could no
- 21:19longer stand being anywhere near this horrible place any longer.
- 21:24In terror, they fled, never to return.
- 21:30To this day, no one knows what became of Enrique or why.
- 21:35Others too have vanished in La Misura, a ghost town that is
- 21:40seemingly cursed by a tumultuous past.
- 21:45But are these terrifying legends true?
- 21:49I originally came across an article about La Misura and
- 21:53found the main story which I have now researched and retold.
- 21:58This article, originally in Spanish, touched upon some very
- 22:02interesting details of the case and added a few hypotheticals
- 22:06which I'll discuss with you now. One of the beliefs as to what
- 22:12happened to this man was that he chose this moment as an
- 22:17opportunity to voluntarily disappear for one reason or
- 22:21another. I however don't personally agree
- 22:24with this theory. Disappearing of your own
- 22:28volition without a trace is very difficult to do even back in the
- 22:32early 1990s, let alone today. But it is still possible if
- 22:37someone knew what they were doing.
- 22:40But to do so you'd need a good amount of money and some kind of
- 22:45infrastructure or plan to do it. With this being said, other
- 22:50theories are that he possibly got confused and went off the
- 22:53trail and died by accident, perhaps by falling.
- 22:59Although this seems like a much more plausible potential cause
- 23:02for the man's disappearance, it too to me is pretty unlikely to
- 23:06be what happened. I say this because there was a
- 23:10week long exhaustive search that was carried out both with
- 23:13volunteers and the authorities. If Enrique had fallen in past,
- 23:20surely his body would have been discovered during this time
- 23:24while the search was taking place.
- 23:27When the authorities began to go through all possibilities, his
- 23:31wife and friends were questioned as to what happened to him but
- 23:35would be ruled out as not having anything to do with his
- 23:38disappearance. Some other interesting details
- 23:42would be that if he had disappeared in any capacity on
- 23:45his own, he had left his vehicle, which also contained
- 23:49his medications and his identifying documents.
- 23:54Strangely, apparently, Enrique has not been the only one to
- 23:58disappear here. Many others have said to have
- 24:01vanished without a trace. Yet despite this, oddly, the
- 24:07missing tend to be referred to in the plural, but oftentimes no
- 24:11specific names are mentioned. What I do know is that in 1995,
- 24:18a German engineer decided to visit La Misura and ultimately
- 24:21went missing for three hours. He returned upset and
- 24:26disoriented, completely unable to explain where he had been and
- 24:31just what had happened to him. Various mayors and community
- 24:36leaders in nearby towns have said that these stories are
- 24:39nothing but fairy tales, but this seems to have been said in
- 24:44hopes of quelling fears in order to not disrupt the crucial
- 24:48tourism to the area. The issue of missing persons has
- 24:53no political ideology, yet these things are usually only briefly
- 24:58covered by the mainstream media outlets and local news.
- 25:03Occasionally a case may be picked up by a content creator
- 25:06on YouTube for wider exposure, but these are few and far
- 25:11between. At the end of the day, only
- 25:14friends and families of the missing person are truly
- 25:16affected. It seems like society as a whole
- 25:20may pause for a brief second, but seem to go back to business
- 25:24as usual after that second has passed.
- 25:28To keep things relevant to this story, in November of 2019 /
- 25:3412,000 people were missing in Spain alone.
- 25:38Some have turned up over time, but the number who haven't is
- 25:42still very high, posing a very real enigma and one that affects
- 25:48many lives alongside these fear inducing statistics.
- 25:53Just what has happened to these people?
- 25:56What happened to Enrique? And is there truly something
- 26:00otherworldly, possibly a portal to another dimension, located
- 26:06the abandoned ghost town known as La Masura?
- 26:10These, as with many stories I've covered, are questions that I or
- 26:15anyone else may never have the answers to.
- 26:19But despite the horror, sorrow, and terror, it does go to show
- 26:25that there are many things in this world that are truly
- 26:28unexplained, and these things may just remain as such.
