Transcript
- 0:00What's up, everybody? Charlie Marlow here got to jump
- 0:02on, talk a little Cardinals talk about this news.
- 0:05Katie Wu of The Athletic, who does such a great job covering
- 0:09the Cardinals reporting that the Cards are not expected to bring
- 0:13back Paul Goldschmidt, according to multiple league sources she
- 0:17writes. And I think this is good news.
- 0:22It's bittersweet because, look, everybody likes or loves Paul
- 0:27Goldschmidt. Great guy, great teammate, great
- 0:32baseball player. Hall of Famer probably or darn
- 0:37close to it. Borderline.
- 0:38I haven't even looked up his his numbers in a while career, but
- 0:42he's Dang close. If not a Hall of Fame baseball
- 0:45player, but also look 37 years old just turned.
- 0:51So if you were to say sign into one of these two year extensions
- 0:56that the Cardinals often give to aging players, especially guys
- 1:01they really like, like a Paul Goldschmidt, who they do like,
- 1:04and they should because he's a great guy, as I said.
- 1:07So basically you'd be getting Paul Goldschmidt for his age, 37
- 1:12and 38 seasons and he would turn 39 at the end of that second
- 1:18year if you were to give him a contract extension.
- 1:21I think this is the way the Cardinals need to start doing
- 1:25business. Look, Paul Goldschmidt, he may
- 1:28go somewhere else for the next couple years.
- 1:30He might be really good next year even.
- 1:33But it's not a good value play in my opinion.
- 1:37It it's not, it's not a good bet for whatever type of money he's
- 1:41going to make. Look, he's making $26 million a
- 1:44year right now. What's he going to sign for for
- 1:48a two year deal? Is he going to get, is he going
- 1:51to get 35,000,000 for, for two years, right?
- 1:55He's not going to get 26. Look, his his numbers are
- 1:57falling off a couple years ago, go back to 2022.
- 2:02He wins the MVP with the Cardinals.
- 2:05Unbelievable. OPS plus that year I think was
- 2:07171. Correct me on that.
- 2:09I believe something something like that, right?
- 2:12Something crazy. And then last year, OPS plus, I
- 2:16just looked this up, was 120, so a big drop off, but that's still
- 2:2120% above league average for a guy at the time who's 3536 years
- 2:28old. This year, you've seen a big
- 2:30drop off. I just checked, 97 OPS plus.
- 2:34So we're talking basically right there at league average or
- 2:38slightly below for a guy who just turned 37 years old.
- 2:44But the kicker is he's making $26 million.
- 2:46Look, you can you can be a league average player if you're
- 2:5025 years old and you're making 6700 K per year.
- 2:55But I just don't think it made sense for the Cardinals to bring
- 2:59him back at a high number when he's clearly on the decline due
- 3:04to age. Father Time is undefeated and
- 3:07also This is why going back to even last year, I didn't think
- 3:11the idea of the Cardinals trading Paul Goldschmidt at the
- 3:15deadline was that crazy. But I knew they weren't going to
- 3:19do it because the Cardinals never do things like that.
- 3:22But look at positionally, I don't know if Jordan Walker is
- 3:25going to be an outfielder long term.
- 3:27The dude's 6 foot, what is he, 6667?
- 3:31Probably eventually can walk around at 270, whatever it is,
- 3:37and carry that weight well. Is he going to be a right
- 3:40fielder for his career? Is he going to be a first
- 3:42baseman? Maybe he'll be a first baseman.
- 3:44I don't know. How about Alec Burleson can
- 3:46surely play first base. So you have some other guys,
- 3:50excuse me, who can play first base?
- 3:52Also, even a Nolan Gorman. Could Nolan Gorman play first
- 3:57base? Here's the guy who came up as a
- 3:58third baseman and then he's a second baseman.
- 4:01I mean, surely if you can play third, you can play second.
- 4:03You can play first base. A guy like Brendan Donovan can
- 4:05play first base. I know you don't want him to be
- 4:07your everyday first baseman. You like him as the Super
- 4:10utility guy. I'm just saying the Cardinals
- 4:13have options at first base. Getting back to Katie Wu, by the
- 4:18way, who reported and broke this story about Goldie, but also her
- 4:23article that came out on Friday, which was really interesting.
- 4:26I mean, pretty, pretty scathing indictment of the Cardinals lack
- 4:31of development in the minor leagues.
- 4:33And you saw that John Mosaic and Michael Gersh did not comment,
- 4:37but there was there was quotes from anonymous sources within
- 4:42the front office. And so look, the Cardinals
- 4:44realize they need a full overhaul top down.
- 4:50And really, if you think about it, it's more it's more bottom
- 4:53up than top down. And I say that because it starts
- 4:57at the minor league levels. And so they have to make sure
- 5:00that they can compete in terms of of the arm race, the arms
- 5:05race of ideas and technology and scouting and coordinators.
- 5:12And they need to be there on the same level as these teams,
- 5:15whether it's the Rays, the Dodgers, the Brewers.
- 5:17If you read that article right, the Cardinals have been
- 5:21underfunded in the last several years when it comes to that,
- 5:25that Cardinal way, that George Kissell way that we're all used
- 5:29to because the Cardinals were putting more of their money into
- 5:32the Major League payroll, which hasn't worked out either.
- 5:36The Cardinals in free agency under John Mosaic, they have.
- 5:40They have not been that great at all.
- 5:43Now look this past year, Sonny Gray, you like that go a couple
- 5:47years ago, I mean Wilson Contreras, even Lance Lynn, Cal
- 5:52Gibson, you you like what they brought to the table once they
- 5:56signed him. I I think the argument was more
- 5:58so don't sign both Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson, but I'm talking
- 6:01historically. If you just go to the Dexter
- 6:03Fowlers and the Mike Leakes of the world and the Carpenter
- 6:08extension and this Miles Michaelis extension, and I'm
- 6:13missing some other folks as well.
- 6:15But spending in free agency has not been the Cardinals strength,
- 6:19which is why they need to develop from within.
- 6:22And that's when they were great under Luna and Mosaic and all
- 6:26those great drafts and O 9. And then you saw 11 to 15, the
- 6:30fruits of all that the Cardinals had so many homegrown grown
- 6:34guys, so many homegrown pitchers and we're not seeing that
- 6:37anymore. So I think the Cardinals are are
- 6:41finally they're being forced to change because last year was so
- 6:46terrible. This year, whatever, they're
- 6:48going to end up slightly above 500.
- 6:51But Cardinals fans are also pissed.
- 6:53You can tell not showing up. No 3 million fans, not even
- 6:56close. That's No 3 million tickets
- 6:59sold. We all know that there is way
- 7:01fewer people actually in terms of butts in the seats.
- 7:04But I think the article that came out Friday and then this
- 7:10news on Goldie, the Cardinals are are basically realizing that
- 7:16we have to change, right? We can't just give every player
- 7:19we like a free two year extension at the end, whether
- 7:22that was Carp or Michaelis and everything at the end with
- 7:25Wayno. Wayno was pretty good until that
- 7:28final year where he was terrible.
- 7:29But like the legacy deals, we need to end that.
- 7:33So times they are a change. And what do you think about
- 7:37about all this news, not just Goldie, but what came out in
- 7:41Katie Woo's article Friday where, look, it looks like the
- 7:45Cardinals are are going to take a step back philosophically,
- 7:49they've already taken a step back the last couple years in
- 7:52terms of wins and losses in the standings.
- 7:56But it seems like the next year or so now, look, we're going to
- 8:01regroup. We're going to start at the
- 8:03minor league level. So you wonder, you wonder in
- 8:06terms of trades if you're really not going to try to win next
- 8:11year. Now, I don't think they'll go
- 8:12full tank mode, But but who also could be moved?
- 8:17Just think about knowing Coronado making a ton of money,
- 8:20not as productive. Would you have to eat some of
- 8:22that salary to move him? Is Sunny Gray on the table?
- 8:27I mean, do you want to do you want to just strip it down and
- 8:29be bad next year? I really don't think that's the
- 8:32Cardinals MO. Maybe they should do that.
- 8:35Fans will be pissed. Fans are already pissed.
- 8:38Let me rephrase that. Would you guys actually be
- 8:41pissed because some of you have been asking for the tear down
- 8:45going back to the trade deadline?
- 8:46Hey, let's let's trade Ryan Helsey right now when his values
- 8:50at an all time high, get a haul back and try to set the team up
- 8:54better for the future. I don't know.
- 8:56I don't think Saint Louis Cardinal fans can stomach a full
- 9:00on rebuild, but I also don't know if it if it would really
- 9:04truly be that because there's enough good young position
- 9:08players. I think that the product on the
- 9:10field would still be exciting. Look, it's not going to be a
- 9:13five year rebuild. Even if you said we want to be
- 9:16competitive in 2026. I mean, aren't you holding on to
- 9:21obviously new bar Donovan, clearly Mason Win, Alec
- 9:27Burleson, Yvonne Herrera, whoever it is, You have Victor
- 9:31Scott, you have Siani, you have Jordan Walker hopefully coming
- 9:37back and being good. You hope something happens with
- 9:39Nolan Gorman. All these guys are pretty young.
- 9:42All these guys are relatively inexpensive.
- 9:45It's the pitching where you probably just got to say, OK,
- 9:48we're moving on from as many guys as we can.
- 9:51But look, Sonny Gray under contract, Miles Michaelis under
- 9:54contract, Steven Matt's under contract, Eric Fetty under
- 9:59contract. You like Andre Palante what he
- 10:01did. I don't know, though.
- 10:03The first four guys I just mentioned, that's a lot of
- 10:05aging, starting pitching that's making a lot of money.
- 10:09So do you try to to move any of those guys or eat some salary to
- 10:14get them off the books? If you're going to do this kind
- 10:16of kind of full on youth movement, whatever it is, I
- 10:20don't know. It's fascinating.
- 10:21This is going to be a fascinating offseason for the
- 10:23Cardinals. All right, I'll shut up.
- 10:26My daughter's up there knocking on the door and we'll talk about
- 10:30this. Look, season ends here.
- 10:31I'm doing this during the game, so we'll do the whole season in
- 10:34review coming up in this next week or so.
- 10:37Enjoy your Sunday, everybody. Have a great rest of your
- 10:42weekend and have a great week. We'll see.
- 10:44Oh, yeah. Hey.
- 10:45Hey. I forgot to mention, though,
- 10:47support our sponsors, of course, right.
- 10:49Triad Bank, Saint Louis Lawn care, Saint Louis Equipment,
- 10:54corner butcher and chop house. OK.
- 10:56Triad Bank, Triad banking.com, been going there for about 5
- 11:00years. They've been a sponsor for about
- 11:02four years. Best decision I ever made for my
- 11:04rental property business, bringing all my commercial loans
- 11:07from a big National Bank that doesn't care about me to a local
- 11:10bank that does. It's Triad Bank there in
- 11:12Frontenac. There's also location in Creve
- 11:15Coeur. You can go retail banking there
- 11:16as well. Triad Bank, they do it all.
- 11:19Triad banking.com. All right, guys, we'll see you.
