- 0:00Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and welcome to another episode
- 0:05of the United Church of Tonga Youth Devotion.
- 0:09Our Bible reading for today is taken from Proverbs 3, verses 7 and 8.
- 0:16It says, Do not be wise in your own eyes, fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
- 0:23It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.
- 0:29Our theme today, humility refreshes the soul.
- 0:33A typical response from young people when parents or older individuals try to
- 0:39offer advice is, I know, I know.
- 0:43That's their way of cutting off the advice from the other person.
- 0:47As young people, we sometimes believe we know everything and don't accept any
- 0:53further ideas or advice from others.
- 0:56We think that because we are doing well at school and university,
- 1:01we are wiser than our parents and those around us.
- 1:04The passage for today gives us a command, do not be wise in your own eyes.
- 1:11And this command speaks directly to us.
- 1:14We need to be humble and listen to the advice that is given.
- 1:19Being prideful is a sin. In 1 John 2, verse 16 talks about this.
- 1:26When we think that we know it all, there is no space for the Word of God to
- 1:31enter our lives and make any transformation.
- 1:34This pride assumes that we can equally understand the knowledge of good and
- 1:39evil and can rightly judge between the two.
- 1:43It reflects the sinful nature that led to Satan's fall as the archangel of the Lord.
- 1:50Pride led to Adam and Eve's fall in the Garden of Eden. No wonder the book of
- 1:56Proverbs commands us not to be wise in our own eyes.
- 2:01But what do we need to do then? We are called to fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
- 2:08Fearing the Lord requires humility and recognizing our place and who God is.
- 2:15We must remember that we are God's creations and He is the Creator.
- 2:22He stands above all things. He is the King of all kings.
- 2:27He is the Lord of all lords. As his creations, our responsibility is to worship him and give him glory.
- 2:36We can't give glory to someone if our hearts are full of pride and selfishness.
- 2:43Fearing the Lord and turning away from evil, heals our bodies,
- 2:48and refreshes our bones.
- 2:51Proverbs 14 verse 30 states, a tranquil heart gives life to the flesh,
- 2:59but envy makes the bones rot.
- 3:03It's no wonder King David shared that when he stays silent about his sins,
- 3:09his bones waste away through groaning all day long.
- 3:14We need to turn away from the source of rotten bones and crushed souls.
- 3:20True peace is found only in our Lord.
- 3:24Let us fear the Lord, approach Him in sincere humility, and turn away from all evil.
- 3:32Let us pray. Lord Jesus, here I am.
- 3:36My soul has been crushed and my bones rot from all the evil in my life.
- 3:44I plead that you grant me a heart of humility so that I will be able to truly
- 3:52fear you and turn away from all evil.
- 3:56This is my prayer in your holy name. Amen.
