- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. We hope that
- 0:02you guys are having an amazing second week of
- 0:05July, and it's warm and it's beautiful out. This
- 0:08is my husband's favorite month. It's his birth
- 0:11month. It's 4th of July. And so we are just so
- 0:13excited for the month of July. And so as we walk
- 0:18into this second week of July, we're going to
- 0:21be talking about letting go of shame and It is
- 0:25a beautiful just sunny day here and it is just
- 0:30you can hear the birds chirping and you can just
- 0:33hear just and just the smells and it's just wonderful.
- 0:37And so we're gonna be talking about letting go
- 0:38of shame. Shame is one of the enemy's oldest
- 0:42weapons. No sin, no temptation, no fear. Just
- 0:46shame. Because shame is what sin leaves behind
- 0:49long after God had forgiven you. Shame is a spiritual
- 0:53glue that keeps people stuck in their past even
- 0:56when God has already moved them into the future.
- 1:01And shame sounds like you're disqualified. You
- 1:05should be better by now. You always struggle
- 1:09with that. You're not worthy. You're too broken.
- 1:13You should hide this. Everyone sees your failure.
- 1:18You'll never outgrow this. Shame isn't loud.
- 1:23It's subtle. It's creeping. It's whispering.
- 1:27It's smothering. It's private. It's personal.
- 1:32But if you're gonna walk in freedom this month,
- 1:37you have to learn to separate the voice of God
- 1:39from the voice of shame. Because they do not
- 1:43sound alike. And so how do you know that? How
- 1:46do you know how to discern the voice of God versus
- 1:50the voice of shame? And I was listening to a
- 1:52sermon and it was about because you've sat with
- 1:55God for such a long time, you know His voice.
- 1:58You know what His love letter says. You know
- 2:00what scripture says. And so it's so important
- 2:03to know and just to sit with Him. And that way
- 2:06you know what He sounds like. if it's your Aunt
- 2:09Esther calling or if it's some spam guy calling
- 2:13from India or whatever. So you know that person
- 2:17that you talk to every day, if they blindfolded
- 2:20you, you would know your husband's voice, you
- 2:22would know your wife's voice, you would know
- 2:23your kid's voice. And even if you're in a crowded
- 2:25place, a mom or a dad, and they hear mom or dad,
- 2:30they turn their head because they know what their
- 2:32kid sounds like. And so we should know what our
- 2:35parents sound like. And so he's our heavenly
- 2:38father. And so if I would yell for Gia, she would
- 2:41know my tone. She would know. And sometimes I
- 2:44can even look at her and she will just know and
- 2:47know what I'm thinking, know if she's in trouble
- 2:49or whatever have you. And so the difference between
- 2:53shame and conviction is because people confuse
- 2:56these all the time. So let's make it black and
- 2:58white. And so conviction is the Holy Spirit.
- 3:01It draws you to God. It offers you hope. It leads
- 3:04to transformation. It says you are loved. Let's
- 3:08fix this together. Lifts your head. Shame is
- 3:12from the enemy. It pushes you away from God.
- 3:16It offers despair. Leads to hiding. Says you're
- 3:21the problem. And it lowers your head. Conviction
- 3:26is surgical and it cuts to heal. Shame is abusive.
- 3:31and it cuts to wound. God convicts the behavior.
- 3:36Shame attacks the identity. God says, that was
- 3:39wrong. Shame says, you are wrong. God says, let's
- 3:43grow. And shame says, you'll never change. God
- 3:47says, come close. And shame says, stay hidden.
- 3:53The distinction changes everything. And shame
- 3:56entered the world in Genesis 3. The people have
- 3:59been hiding and ever since, the moment that Adam
- 4:03and Eve sinned, they hid from the Lord God among
- 4:06the trees. In Genesis 3, 8, shame always produces
- 4:10hiding from God, from community, from calling,
- 4:15from vulnerability, from honesty, from healing.
- 4:19Shame isolates you from the very place God designed
- 4:23to heal. And here's the powerful part. God didn't
- 4:26shame Adam and Eve. He sought them. Where are
- 4:31you in Genesis 3 9? Not because he didn't know,
- 4:35but because they didn't know how lost they were
- 4:40becoming. And God stills asked that question
- 4:43today, not to expose you, but to free you. And
- 4:47the enemy uses shame to paralyze your purpose.
- 4:50Shame says you can't lead. You can't serve. You
- 4:54think that you're going to teach that Bible class?
- 4:56Those kids don't like you. You shouldn't speak.
- 5:01You have no authority. You aren't worthy of ministry.
- 5:07But scripture is full of people God used who
- 5:10carried shameful stories. Moses was a murderer.
- 5:14David was adulterer. Paul persecuted Christians.
- 5:18Rahab was a prostitute. Peter denied Jesus. And
- 5:23the Samaritan woman? had a lot of broken relationships.
- 5:28Shame told them that they were disqualified and
- 5:31God told them that they were chosen. The enemy
- 5:33uses your past to try to bury your purpose, but
- 5:37God uses your past to give purpose to your purpose.
- 5:42And so shame grows in the dark. So God brings
- 5:45it into the light. Shame loses its power the
- 5:48moment that you stop hiding. Bringing shame into
- 5:51the light does not mean broadcasting your story,
- 5:54confessing it on TikTok, confessing it to unsafe
- 5:57people, reliving the trauma publicly. It means
- 6:03being honest with God, honest with yourself,
- 6:06honest with trusted people, releasing secrets,
- 6:10refusing to hide behind perfection. Light exposes
- 6:13chains so God can break them. And so the fourth...
- 6:18So four roots of shame. Sin. Things you did.
- 6:24Sin forgiven but not released will produce shame.
- 6:29Two. Wounds. Things done to you. Many people
- 6:33carry shame of trauma they did not cause. Three.
- 6:38Comparison. Feeling less than. Perfection. Culture
- 6:42fuels shame. Four. Identity lies. False labels.
- 6:49I'm not enough. I'm too much. I'm defective.
- 6:55Jesus died to destroy these lies. And what Jesus
- 6:59actually does with shame? So this part is so
- 7:03important and so freeing. One, He covers it.
- 7:07In Genesis 321, God made garments to cover Adam
- 7:10and Eve. Shame exposed. God covered them. And
- 7:14Jesus is covering you. 2. He carries it. In Isaiah
- 7:1953 -4, surely He carried our sorrows. Our shame
- 7:24is not ours to hold anymore. It's His. Quit carrying
- 7:29it. He cancels it. In Romans 8 -1, there is therefore
- 7:34no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Not
- 7:39some. Not occasional. None. He redeems it. God
- 7:45does not waste your story. He turns shame into
- 7:47strength. He turns wounds into wisdom. He turns
- 7:50pain into purpose. Shame is not the end. It's
- 7:53the beginning of redemption. And the practical
- 7:57processes that I think that are letting go of
- 8:00shame, are these all ending? No, but here's some
- 8:03of them. And here is where you shine. Life -giving,
- 8:08life, heart -level guidance. One, name the shame.
- 8:13Write it. Say it. Acknowledge it. Shame thrives
- 8:18in secrecy. And so what it is, write it down.
- 8:24Two. Identify the lie attached to it. What does
- 8:28shame tell you? I'm dirty. I'm unworthy. I'm
- 8:32fearful. No one would love me if they knew. Name
- 8:37the lie. Three. Replace that lie with scripture.
- 8:43Speak. Truth out loud. I am forgiven. I am covered.
- 8:47I am chosen. I am made new. I am righteous in
- 8:50Christ. I am loved. Truth breaks shame's power.
- 8:56And say it with like excitement. I am forgiven.
- 8:59I am covered. I am chosen. I am made new. I am
- 9:02righteous in Christ and I am loved. And there's
- 9:04so many more and we've said them before on the
- 9:06podcast, but I mean, there's just so many out
- 9:09there and just say them and just know that those
- 9:11are true. Surrender the memory and ask God to
- 9:15heal it. The moment, the emotion, the beliefs
- 9:19that you formed, that identity that you've adopted,
- 9:24healing comes from surrendered lives. Five, walk
- 9:29in your new identity. Shame is a prison and identity
- 9:33is the key. Every time shame surfaces, answer
- 9:38it with, that's who I was. That's not who I am.
- 9:45And letting go of shame does not mean that you
- 9:46don't remember it. It means it won't define you
- 9:50anymore. It won't decide for you anymore. It
- 9:54won't silence you. It won't hurt you or haunt
- 9:57you. It won't limit you. And it won't name you.
- 10:01Shame loses its grip when identity takes place.
- 10:05And the enemy hates free people. He fights freedom
- 10:09because free people walk boldly. They obey quickly.
- 10:13They don't hide. They minister with confidence.
- 10:17They don't fall for lies. They worship fully.
- 10:20They forgive easily. And they are spiritually
- 10:23dangerous. You cannot walk in freedom if you're
- 10:27dragging shame. And so we are walking through
- 10:31our workbooks. Our devotions are on our website,
- 10:34fosteringfaithmedia .com. And so make sure that
- 10:37you head over there and to print those out. And
- 10:38so you can walk through this year with purpose
- 10:41and direction. And so what shame are you from
- 10:45your past? Am I still carrying? Is it memories
- 10:48that still sting? Decisions that haunt you? Labels
- 10:53that you believe? Sins long forgiven, but not
- 10:57released? Wounds that you blame yourselves for?
- 11:02Fear of being found out? God reveals shame so
- 11:07he can remove shame. And so write one step that
- 11:11you will take this week to release the shame
- 11:13to God. Tell someone that's safe. Pray over that
- 11:17specific lie. Write a letter of release. Memorize
- 11:21Roman 8 -1. Confess something to God honestly.
- 11:26Stop rehearsing a failure. Replace a false identity
- 11:29with truth and speak God's approval daily Sign
