- 0:10Robbie Williams beats The Beatles.
- 0:14Welcome to Mark and Pete and today we're confronting A
- 0:17statistical fact that feels heretical.
- 0:21It's to do with Robbie Williams and The Beatles.
- 0:24Welcome to Mark and Pete. 2 blokes with half an opinion.
- 0:28Now here's our first thought. If you beat a Beatles record
- 0:34when your latest album has sold out, you can relax after A Hard
- 0:38Day's Night and then twist and shout, Well, congratulations,
- 0:42Robbie Williams. Yes, the pop star has secured a
- 0:45major milestone in the UK album chart and he has surpassed The
- 0:50Beatles to become the only artist with the most number of
- 0:53albums in chart history, 16 in total.
- 0:57Now Mr. Pete, I would say that this is an impressive record
- 1:00when you think about the standards in pop music ever ever
- 1:03being records being broken all over the world, but this is one
- 1:07that really sort of captures my attention.
- 1:09What say you about Robbie Williams and his music and this
- 1:12particular achievement? Well, as you know, I'm a big fan
- 1:16of Robbie Williams. Well, I'm a big fan of everyone
- 1:19we talk about on this show. But yeah, Robbie Williams really
- 1:23has managed to keep keep the albums coming.
- 1:28I was going to say churn out the albums.
- 1:30That's perhaps a little bit unkind, but he he has got his
- 1:35his finger on what's going to be popular and not, well, not being
- 1:41extremely innovative. He has he's managed just one to
- 1:47produce high quality merchandise in his music and secondly to to
- 1:54consistently keep it going. If The Beatles had kept going
- 1:58longer, maybe they wouldn't wouldn't be in this position now
- 2:01being being toppled from the peak of number of albums at #1
- 2:06now just just a slight comment here about it, about us, about
- 2:13our story, that is it's not actually that important, but
- 2:17just leave that to the side. I think it might be to Robbie
- 2:19Williams. But it is a record and it does
- 2:23say something about culture today, I'm sure.
- 2:27Well, it does. And what here's the thing now
- 2:29he, he, when he was actually interviewed about this, once he
- 2:32knew that he'd achieved that major milestone, he came up with
- 2:35something which I thought was quite poetic.
- 2:38But this is what he said. He said he was unbelievable,
- 2:41absolutely unbelievable. But he said this is Robbie
- 2:43Williams speaking. I've always said my success has
- 2:45been the equivalent of stretching an elastic band from
- 2:48Stoke on Trent to the Moon. Well, I reckon the elastic band
- 2:52just got longer and now it's orbiting Venus.
- 2:55Now what was more important, and this is the bit that caught my
- 2:59attention, he added. It's just sensational.
- 3:02What's what's happened? I feel like the Forrest Gump of
- 3:05pop as the old oh Robbie Williams has a strange and
- 3:11slightly quirky sense of humour. Here's the thing.
- 3:14Here's my take on this now I've. I actually bought some of his
- 3:19albums when he first started as a solo artist as from those
- 3:22people who still don't know who Robbie Williams is.
- 3:25He started his career with the pop group Take That in the early
- 3:2890s and of course he left in the late 90s to go through.
- 3:33And what he launched his solo clear career was was through the
- 3:37well known album Life Through a Lens, which again, of course was
- 3:41a great success. He then went on to have lots of
- 3:44singles success, but the albums are something where he's clearly
- 3:48prospered. Now here's the thing, you know,
- 3:51for a guy who's still very active, who knows, maybe he
- 3:55could exceed this because possibly 16 may go to 17 and
- 4:00beyond. So Mr. Pete, I ask you, how far
- 4:03can he go? How far can he stretch?
- 4:05I think he can do it again. Has he been in business though?
- 4:09When you say you said early 90s though, so.
- 4:12Well, he started in the early 90s because of course he was a
- 4:14teenager. But yes, I mean, I guess he's
- 4:17he's, he's always still young enough.
- 4:19Still young enough, I think. But my point is that it's not
- 4:22really not really comparing like with like with the poor old
- 4:25Beatles who broke. Up No.
- 4:26Yes. But although their albums I
- 4:29guess keep selling, yeah, I think, well, I think he's got
- 4:32another album in in him. That's what I think.
- 4:35Like I think he could push it to 17, but can, can he go further
- 4:41than that? I think maybe because his style
- 4:44I think is coming back. I think that we we had a sort of
- 4:50nadir of, you know, scraping the bottom of the bowel the of of
- 4:55pop music when rap, which isn't really music, it's just pretend
- 5:00it's someone talking over music is just saying that to try and
- 5:03get some comments on this episode.
- 5:06I realise that it's, it's a it's a popular musical form, not
- 5:10really to my taste, but Robbie, Robbie Williams has has, I think
- 5:16more of a what has generally been.
- 5:19So we talk over time, a mainstream appeal and and so it
- 5:24it was perhaps inevitable that he would be longer lived and
- 5:28actually come back. I think that if you, I mean,
- 5:32you're more afraid with the the latest charts than I am, but
- 5:36would would that be a reasonable analysis as I see well.
- 5:39I. Would.
- 5:39Well, I've got something. Else singing is coming back to.
- 5:43Well, I hope that Robbie Williams will continue his
- 5:46career because I think he offers something a little bit different
- 5:50Now. What's interesting is this
- 5:52statistic and I'm sure that it's in in his mind from a business
- 5:55point of view, the star himself has had 21 number one albums if
- 6:00you include Take That. So this is key.
- 6:04So obviously he's had 16 on his own.
- 6:06If you add them all up, then comes to another five with 21.
- 6:11Now here's the thing. There's somebody called Sir Paul
- 6:14McCartney and Sir Paul McCartney with The Beatles and Paul
- 6:18McCartney and with Wings and with everyone has got 23 number
- 6:23one albums. Now.
- 6:24The thing here is he's not far away for becoming an all time
- 6:29number one album artist. And I think that, you know, for
- 6:32somebody like that, how a way he wishes to develop his musical
- 6:36career could really sort of pave the way.
- 6:38And who knows, maybe in time people will say Paul McCartney.
- 6:43Who? Yes, well, they might say that,
- 6:47but I I think that's interesting.
- 6:48You managed to drag it back from, you know, talking about
- 6:52the the culture and how this is affecting his career to, you
- 6:56know, how's he going to win this one, which I think is a good way
- 7:00of looking. And yeah.
- 7:01I think he should do a compilation album of his version
- 7:05of The Beatles. Yeah, two or three times over.
- 7:07And I think he might get there. No, of course he.
- 7:10Did a well received sort of American standards or jazz album
- 7:15didn't. He.
- 7:16He did he. Could sort of break into, Could
- 7:19you? Certainly.
- 7:20It was swing both ways. Yes, I've heard that too.
- 7:24But yeah, he yes, he could certainly take on take a take
- 7:30notes from the great Cliff Richard of on longevity and, you
- 7:34know. Yeah.
- 7:37Different genres, yes. So, so that's Robbie Williams.
- 7:43We're big fans, as you may have heard of, of Robbie Williams and
- 7:48looking forward to him maybe gaining supremacy over the total
- 7:54number of almonds, which whether they're in a group or solo that
- 7:59that Paul McCartney has, you see.
- 8:01But, and I think it may be possible.
- 8:03It's not. It's not a scandal though to say
- 8:06that Robbie Williams it's has more popular than The Beatles
- 8:11over time. It's just a lesson because if
- 8:15you look back, we we think about The Beatles being in the past
- 8:18and we think the times were better then, but maybe the music
- 8:21of today really is better.
