- 0:30I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 44 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:34I Hate Talking: So can you hear me this time?
- 0:36I Hate Talking: I can hear you.
- 0:37I Hate Talking: Well, hopefully, our listeners can hear us as well.
- 0:41I Hate Talking: If you can't, maybe perhaps turn up your volume.
- 0:44I Hate Talking: That would be the first thing to check.
- 0:46I Hate Talking: -- That's always a -- helpful tip.
- 0:49I Hate Talking: Check if your Bluetooth is connected to your headset or your vehicle.
- 0:54I Hate Talking: That also helps.
- 0:55I Hate Talking: Yeah, make sure it's not connected to like some other Bluetooth device that is now playing our podcast to some other room in your house.
- 1:03I Hate Talking: Uh, that's happened before.
- 1:05I Hate Talking: Uh oh.
- 1:05I Hate Talking: And like we said last time, if you are enjoying this podcast, like, share, subscribe.
- 1:12I Hate Talking: We're on YouTube now, we're on all the different podcast platforms, and we're just having fun doing podcasts, just like all the other people in the world doing their own podcasts.
- 1:23I Hate Talking: There are a lot, but I really enjoy sitting here talking with you.
- 1:29I Hate Talking: Precisely, so we're going to pick up on some of the things that we did not get to in our last episode since we sort of just went -- all over the place with a variety of -- topics we were talking about.
- 1:42I Hate Talking: We were talking about, but I feel like we Went into a space of perhaps.
- 1:51I Hate Talking: First person first person desires and like what drives a person and sort of what they desire in terms of human interaction so.
- 2:05I Hate Talking: That's fine.
- 2:07I Hate Talking: It's probably is part of the human experience -- that we can a -- major part of the human experience.
- 2:12I Hate Talking: I would argue that everyone.
- 2:14I Hate Talking: Almost everyone has first person syndrome.
- 2:18I Hate Talking: Well, that is sort of the point of Saunder is that everyone considers themselves as the primary character, so.
- 2:26I Hate Talking: Yeah, I guess it was related after all.
- 2:29I Hate Talking: Yeah.
- 2:30I Hate Talking: So our word or phrase of this episode.
- 2:34I Hate Talking: Is NPC because that was an extra topic we, we're going to talk about last time, but we did not get to, didn't even mention it, in fact.
- 2:44I Hate Talking: But before we get to that particular word or phrase, NPC we will talk about Neologism because the word sonder is a neologism and we did not define that in our previous episode.
- 2:58I Hate Talking: So we want to do that very briefly here in terms of what neologism is.
- 3:03I Hate Talking: I've been on pins and needles waiting for this.
- 3:06I Hate Talking: So, neologism.
- 3:09I Hate Talking: Is actually not a neologism.
- 3:14I Hate Talking: Because neologism is a newly coined word or expression.
- 3:21I Hate Talking: And it does not necessarily have any particular etymology.
- 3:25I Hate Talking: It's not used in previous decades or centuries and sort of evolves over time.
- 3:32I Hate Talking: It is simply a brand new word or phrase.
- 3:36I Hate Talking: Now, the interesting thing about neologism is that neologism is based on a variety of root words, neo and logos.
- 3:47I Hate Talking: So logos being related to word and Neo being related to new, so it literally means new word neologism.
- 3:59I Hate Talking: All right.
- 4:00I Hate Talking: So, there you have it.
- 4:02I Hate Talking: I don't know if it's Greek or Latin, Greek is the answer.
- 4:06I Hate Talking: Logos.
- 4:07I Hate Talking: Well, that makes sense.
- 4:07I Hate Talking: Greek is logos.
- 4:09I Hate Talking: So, it's a new word, a new compound word put together in the Greek.
- 4:13I Hate Talking: What makes like the word a word?
- 4:17I Hate Talking: Like, why is this a new word?
- 4:19I Hate Talking: Does it makes sense to say new word.
- 4:21I Hate Talking: -- So neologism is not the new -- word.
- 4:24I Hate Talking: Neologism is an old word based on etymology of new and logos or based on neo and logos, literally new word.
- 4:35I Hate Talking: But Saunder is a neologism because it just basically was coined by that particular author that we talked about last time.
- 4:45I Hate Talking: So is it thinking of like a subcategories like this word neo how do you say it, neo neologism neologism.
- 4:55I Hate Talking: is a new word that was subcategories now of words in our modern day vernacular that we use.
- 5:04I Hate Talking: I'm confused on what you're asking.
- 5:06I Hate Talking: Are you asking if neologism is I thought you said that was a new word.
- 5:12I Hate Talking: Literally it means new word but it itself is not a new word.
- 5:18I Hate Talking: It is simply used as a word to describe new words.
- 5:22I Hate Talking: Oh man, this is OK, so, but so this word's been around for centuries.
- 5:27I Hate Talking: So it actually has been around 4 centuries.
- 5:32I Hate Talking: It was used in the early 1800s.
- 5:36I Hate Talking: Now it does become more prevalently used in the early 2000s.
- 5:43I Hate Talking: So it does gain more usage over time, when we look at our favorite Google Ngram viewer, but.
- 5:51I Hate Talking: Neologism is by no means a new word.
- 5:54I Hate Talking: It simply describes new words that come out of nowhere.
- 5:57I Hate Talking: OK, so I misunderstood earlier when you were like, it's a new word.
- 6:01I Hate Talking: I thought you meant like.
- 6:03I Hate Talking: It came into our modern day vernacular recently, but you're just saying it means new word.
- 6:11I Hate Talking: Correct.
- 6:13I Hate Talking: OK.
- 6:14I Hate Talking: So, sonder is a new word that has come into the vernacular as of 2012, and that is a neologism, but neologism is not a neologism.
- 6:26I Hate Talking: OK.
- 6:27I Hate Talking: I'm following now.
- 6:28I Hate Talking: I'm tracking now.
- 6:29I Hate Talking: I'm on the train.
- 6:30I Hate Talking: All right, we're on the neologism train.
- 6:34I Hate Talking: So our official word or phrase of the episode that we decided to make a word or phrase of the episode because we didn't talk about it last time, is NPC.
- 6:43I Hate Talking: OK.
- 6:45I Hate Talking: So NPC is an acronym.
- 6:48I Hate Talking: OK.
- 6:50I Hate Talking: So, NPC non.
- 6:54I Hate Talking: Player computer.
- 6:57I Hate Talking: No, NCPA wait, now I'm a computer player.
- 7:01I Hate Talking: Wait.
- 7:01I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 7:03I Hate Talking: Go ahead and tell us.
- 7:04I Hate Talking: So that's interesting because you may have been getting at.
- 7:08I Hate Talking: The way that this particular acronym NPC is used, the actual letters NPC.
- 7:15I Hate Talking: Non-player character.
- 7:18I Hate Talking: Yeah, OK, right?
- 7:22I Hate Talking: Is that what you mean?
- 7:23I Hate Talking: So That is what seems to be the typical definition of NPC.
- 7:31I Hate Talking: If somebody had asked me before I had done the research for this particular episode, I would have said non-playable character.
- 7:38I Hate Talking: OK, but what it is is it's the computer playing, right?
- 7:42I Hate Talking: Like, if you're playing a video game, it's the computer playing against you.
- 7:47I Hate Talking: Or with you or with you, yes, but it's a non-player.
- 7:51I Hate Talking: It's not a real player or not playable like you said.
- 7:57I Hate Talking: I guess that makes sense too.
- 7:58I Hate Talking: Exactly.
- 8:00I Hate Talking: So, based on some of the research, there may have been some overlap here.
- 8:03I Hate Talking: And it's hard to get the results from the Ngram viewer for this particular phrase.
- 8:12I Hate Talking: One, because I think that NPC is actually used within the normal vernacular and it's not really spelled out, as well as the fact that this is hyphenated, so that sort of messes up the Ngram viewer in terms of where it picks up this phrase.
- 8:28I Hate Talking: And the phrase non-playable.
- 8:35I Hate Talking: Character actually.
- 8:38I Hate Talking: Sort of trends with non-player character for the last.
- 8:45I Hate Talking: Maybe 10 to 15 years ago, and then for the last 5 years, non-player character spikes and non-playable character sort of just flat lines.
- 8:59I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 9:01I Hate Talking: So only in the last 5 years, which would make sense because my kids are getting into the video game era.
- 9:07I Hate Talking: And they talk about that.
- 9:09I Hate Talking: I've never been a video game person.
- 9:12I Hate Talking: So it makes sense.
- 9:13I Hate Talking: I would think of it as a non-player, but isn't that similar non-player versus nonplayable.
- 9:19I Hate Talking: It has to be non, if it is non-playable, then there's has to be a non-player.
- 9:28I Hate Talking: Precisely, and I think that's actually perhaps what I observe and even have experiences that.
- 9:36I Hate Talking: In the quote unquote early years of Computer Intelligence in terms of controlling a character that is non-playable or a non-player is that.
- 9:54I Hate Talking: In the early years, you would sort of customize your character.
- 9:59I Hate Talking: You may do different things to outfit it with certain abilities or attributes and that.
- 10:08I Hate Talking: The other characters within the game.
- 10:11I Hate Talking: That may not even be really part of the experience.
- 10:15I Hate Talking: They this may be, may be part of cut scenes or whatnot.
- 10:20I Hate Talking: You can't choose to be them nor make your character look like them.
- 10:25I Hate Talking: So they are a non-playable character.
- 10:28I Hate Talking: You can't play as that character, whereas in more of the modern day.
- 10:34I Hate Talking: With artificial intelligence and these characters actually being more of a part of the game, that they might be on your same team or they may be an enemy that you have to overcome in the particular video game that they are a non-player character because they are not being controlled by a human player, but are instead just part of the game mechanics and the artificial intelligence that is controlling that particular character.
- 11:03I Hate Talking: But are they the same then if you are able to Change their looks or purpose a little bit.
- 11:13I Hate Talking: Versus absolutely not being able to touch it at all.
- 11:17I Hate Talking: Is that both NPCs the same way.
- 11:20I Hate Talking: I would say not because There may be a character that exists in the game.
- 11:26I Hate Talking: That simply exists that you cannot play as, and that would be the non-playable character versus a character that exists in the game that you interact with the game that for all intents and purposes appears as another player, but they are non-human and that would be the non-player character.
- 11:48I Hate Talking: But then you get to a whole different, how far down this rabbit hole do you wanna go?
- 11:54I Hate Talking: Because then you get to a whole different level, right, of like playing with online people.
- 11:58I Hate Talking: Are they real people or are they NPCs?
- 12:02I Hate Talking: Are they a mixture of both?
- 12:05I Hate Talking: How do you really know?
- 12:06I Hate Talking: Precisely, and that is the point that we wanted to relate to our previous episode is that if you are not experiencing sonder or maybe you are, that if you Don't have a high degree of the sonder experience that you sort of treat these other people as NPCs and not as real people, like emotional intelligence, that sort of thing.
- 12:33I Hate Talking: Could you also then say, Sonder intelligence, and if you have a high degree of sonder intelligence, you would not treat them as NPCs.
- 12:45I Hate Talking: If you have a low, sonder intelligence, you would treat everyone with NPCs.
- 12:52I Hate Talking: As MPs.
- 12:54I Hate Talking: Well, there you go, I guess you came up with your own neologism as an acronym.
- 13:00I Hate Talking: Yes.
- 13:01I Hate Talking: Sonder intelligence.
- 13:04I Hate Talking: Sonder intelligence coordinate right now.
- 13:08I Hate Talking: So I do think that that would be generally described as emotional intelligence where you're going to be empathetic or sympathetic to others when you're interacting with them that you're going to treat them with the respect that other humans deserve and basically respect their humanity, as it were.
- 13:30I Hate Talking: But yes, I think that part of the reason that you respect their humanity is the fact that Sonder exists and that they are living a rich and complex life just as you are.
- 13:45I Hate Talking: So, when I'm in Starbucks in line in the drive-through, and there's somebody taking an exorbitant amount of time to order.
- 13:56I Hate Talking: And in my heart, I want to just be so frustrated cause I just want my Ice Americano.
- 14:03I Hate Talking: And they're taking too long.
- 14:05I Hate Talking: I can just be grumpy about that, or I can think.
- 14:09I Hate Talking: Hey, they're not at NPC.
- 14:12I Hate Talking: Maybe they are on their way to a really big business meeting that Their whole team is about to get laid off, so they're bringing them Frappuccinos to soften the blow.
- 14:28I Hate Talking: Could be, or to take it to the extreme, perhaps the barista just had a medical episode and collapsed on the floor while they're making their coffee.
- 14:39I Hate Talking: So not treating the barista as an NPC, you know, character creating my Americano, I can think of them as an individual.
- 14:48I Hate Talking: With that maybe just had their niece was just born in the hospital and they cannot wait to go meet them.
- 14:58I Hate Talking: With our shifts over.
- 15:00I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 15:02I Hate Talking: That all is within the realm of possibility.
- 15:05I Hate Talking: And That is The realization that they do have a very complex life that they are living and their own desires and goals that they want to achieve.
- 15:18I Hate Talking: Do you think that you treat people as NPCs, or do you intrinsically see them as individuals?
- 15:26I Hate Talking: So, if they stay within the normal course of human behavior, I don't necessarily potentially pay them much mind.
- 15:35I Hate Talking: And probably would fall maybe more within the NPC category.
- 15:43I Hate Talking: So if we're waiting in line for the checkout at the grocery line and they are just doing everything that is normal for an American to do and standing with their cart, maybe looking at their phone, checking out what things there are in the checkout line, in the candy aisle or magazines or whatnot that.
- 16:04I Hate Talking: I'm, like I said, not going to really concern myself with what they are doing.
- 16:11I Hate Talking: And That's sort of how I would treat that.
- 16:16I Hate Talking: However, If they were acting in a way that was.
- 16:22I Hate Talking: Abnormal, perhaps.
- 16:25I Hate Talking: Talking to themselves or something of that nature that I would pay them more attention.
- 16:33I Hate Talking: And I don't know necessarily if Saunder would come into play in that instance, but I just have a greater.
- 16:43I Hate Talking: Sense of awareness on my situation and what was happening around me.
- 16:49I Hate Talking: I think it also um Comes to mind when I'm thinking about the internet.
- 16:54I Hate Talking: Like, how rare it is to talk to another individual.
- 17:02I Hate Talking: Face to face, really rude, or tell them everything you're thinking.
- 17:07I Hate Talking: But when you're behind a computer, they seem more like an NPC, right?
- 17:12I Hate Talking: Like you can tell them all the things you hate about them, or perceive about them that you hate, and any kind of disagreement, it's much easier behind a keyboard than if you're in line at a grocery store.
- 17:27I Hate Talking: That is true, and that's actually something that we mentioned very briefly last episode is the humanity of people and how you see people because perhaps if they are driving a vehicle and you cannot actually see the person within that.
- 17:44I Hate Talking: They are not really necessarily considered as a person in your mind, you just see them as another vehicle on the road.
- 17:52I Hate Talking: And likewise, if they are behind the keyboard and maybe have a profile picture that is just an emoji or a bit emoji or whatever and not necessarily their actual picture that you will really not see them as a person.
- 18:10I Hate Talking: Mm.
- 18:11I Hate Talking: Now it's interesting that this actually plays a part in traffic theory because of that very thing that I mentioned that people don't see other vehicles as people.
- 18:22I Hate Talking: So you don't necessarily consider when you're cutting somebody off or driving erratically that that really affects a person because they're just vehicles on the road.
- 18:33I Hate Talking: It also has to do with some things within the psychology of warfare where Some training for soldiers may make the enemy appear less human by dressing them in.
- 18:50I Hate Talking: Attire that is not normal to that culture or even just not showing human faces when they're doing training for warfare because that dehumanizes the enemy and makes it easier for that person to then engage with the enemy.
- 19:10I Hate Talking: And you even see that within Star Wars with the Stormtroopers, they are basically.
- 19:17I Hate Talking: Non-human for the experiences of both the rebel forces as well as the person viewing the movie, you don't really see the stormtroopers as people, you just see them as NPCs.
- 19:34I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 19:36I Hate Talking: So would you say that?
- 19:37I Hate Talking: If you see someone's face, their eyes, and their nose and their mouth.
- 19:43I Hate Talking: Does that make you more empathetic or sympathetic to them?
- 19:50I Hate Talking: Absolutely.
- 19:51I Hate Talking: Scientific research has shown that just with some of the things that I mentioned in terms of traffic and vehicles as well as Warfare and the dehumanization of the enemy.
- 20:06I Hate Talking: Are people more likely or are you more likely to be sympathetic to an individual on the screen that you see their full face?
- 20:17I Hate Talking: Or Um, somebody in person, that space is covered.
- 20:24I Hate Talking: With maybe say a mask, a stormtrooper mask.
- 20:28I Hate Talking: So there is something to be said of how much of the face is covered and whether that is the eyes or not, right?
- 20:38I Hate Talking: Because I think that you can even see that in modern day with poker competitions where a lot of poker players will wear.
- 20:47I Hate Talking: Glasses that are shaded and very dark, so you cannot really see their eyes in terms of maybe where they're looking or what their particular facial response is versus a covering of the mouth that again can be prohibitive in understanding people's reactions and emotions with the facial muscles that may smile or smirk or frown or grimace.
- 21:16I Hate Talking: So, I would say that the eyes are going to be the primary way that you are going to be able to determine the humanity and reaction of a person and that Perhaps the screen versus in person does not matter as much.
- 21:37I Hate Talking: Because of the fact that their face is present.
- 21:41I Hate Talking: But that in person, there will be other physical indications such as how they are sitting or fidgeting.
- 21:52I Hate Talking: Or Moving their body that may not be present.
- 21:56I Hate Talking: When just looking at their face on a screen.
- 22:00I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 22:01I Hate Talking: OK.
- 22:02I Hate Talking: Yeah, I buy all that.
- 22:03I Hate Talking: Um, have you heard of the illusionist named Sidey?
- 22:08I Hate Talking: Sidey as in the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man?
- 22:13I Hate Talking: No, not like her toddler loves, no, not Sidey and his amazing friends.
- 22:19I Hate Talking: There's uh illusionist.
- 22:21I Hate Talking: His name is Sidey.
- 22:22I Hate Talking: I've been um binging a lot of his YouTube content.
- 22:27I Hate Talking: But he's an illusionist, like, uh, in Vegas and places like that, but he also, um, spends time reviewing.
- 22:38I Hate Talking: Like famous cases or people interviews, and explaining why they're lying or why they're not.
- 22:46I Hate Talking: Because, and he'll even reference like, oh, well, Facebook quizzes will say this means lying, yada yada.
- 22:54I Hate Talking: But he'll explain why it doesn't mean that, and why.
- 22:58I Hate Talking: People fidget the way they do, cause I think I'm self-conscious of that.
- 23:02I Hate Talking: I fidget a lot.
- 23:04I Hate Talking: And, um, according to Facebook and things like that, would be, I'm untruthful.
- 23:11I Hate Talking: I'm like, but I'm not, I just physically cannot stand still.
- 23:15I Hate Talking: And so he explains physiology like that.
- 23:18I Hate Talking: And um So it makes me think of that when you're talking about um seeing the eyes and the way the eyes look versus the way the mouth twitches and that sort of thing, definitely shows their humanity and brings um more sympathy or empathy to the situation.
- 23:38I Hate Talking: Indeed, so, again, I think we are running into the fact that.
- 23:45I Hate Talking: Social media, Facebook, AI is not.
- 23:50I Hate Talking: get things right and then in a lot of cases does not.
- 23:55I Hate Talking: Provide truth So hopefully we can.
- 23:59I Hate Talking: Garner some insights from this podcast as well as our friend Spiy.
- 24:05I Hate Talking: Yeah, whom I've never heard of, but I guess I will check him out.
- 24:09I Hate Talking: Yeah, maybe we can go to a show one time, it'll be good.
- 24:12I Hate Talking: I really love magicians and illusions.
- 24:17I Hate Talking: I am a really good um Audience member, cause I get fooled by that stuff so easily.
- 24:24I Hate Talking: Yeah, I Treat it as basically.
- 24:29I Hate Talking: Entertainment And maybe even get frustrated at.
- 24:34I Hate Talking: If I don't see.
- 24:37I Hate Talking: Reasonable explanation on how they did something.
- 24:41I Hate Talking: One of my favorite shows was that guy that did.
- 24:44I Hate Talking: The What was it called?
- 24:47I Hate Talking: Was the magician that shared all the secrets on how different magician, he was so good.
- 24:58I Hate Talking: But I didn't really care for the actual person, I just enjoyed.
- 25:02I Hate Talking: Learning how everything was done.
- 25:04I Hate Talking: Ah, me and my brother were so into that show.
- 25:07I Hate Talking: You should watch it sometime.
- 25:09I Hate Talking: Find it, rewatch it.
- 25:10I Hate Talking: I'm sure we'd be thoroughly disappointed.
- 25:13I Hate Talking: It probably has some form of elevated position within our minds from when we were children.
- 25:21I Hate Talking: Yes.
- 25:22I Hate Talking: Right, but like the stakes were so high because if they caught him, he was giving all these tricks out and he was gonna get in so much trouble.
- 25:30I Hate Talking: Whatever happened to that?
- 25:32I Hate Talking: Well, maybe that was the greatest trick of all is that that was not true and it was just a, OK, I don't want to research it because in my head, the stakes are so high.
- 25:42I Hate Talking: Don't say that it was like a hoax.
- 25:44I Hate Talking: Yeah, it was just a marketing technique.
- 25:46I Hate Talking: To my brother who listens to this.
- 25:50I Hate Talking: I'm so sorry if you heard that.
- 25:52I Hate Talking: Keep believing in the masked magician.
- 25:55I Hate Talking: Well, hopefully, we didn't ruin the magic, but if you're listening to this, hopefully you are a real person and not an NPC.
- 26:04I Hate Talking: But if you're an NPC, share it with other NPCs, and if you're a human, share it with other humans.
- 26:10I Hate Talking: So, from your friends at I Hate Talking, until next time, remember, it is only through talking that we begin the journey to understanding.
