- 0:04Speaker 1: A whistler.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I am the whistler, and I know many things. Or
- 0:25Speaker 2: I walk by night. I know many strange tales hidden
- 0:29Speaker 2: in the hearts of men and women who have stepped
- 0:31Speaker 2: into the shadows. Yes, I know the nameless terrors of
- 0:36Speaker 2: which they dare not speak.
- 0:40Speaker 3: And now the whistler's strange story borrowed future.
- 0:58Speaker 2: The late afternoons, a red ball of fire lingered on
- 1:02Speaker 2: the rim of the distant mountain, and long shadows were
- 1:05Speaker 2: creeping across the valley floor. As Phil Hodges stood at
- 1:08Speaker 2: the window of the construction company office watched the approach
- 1:12Speaker 2: of the car along the narrow, dusty roadway leading up
- 1:15Speaker 2: to the newly erected, almost completed dam. He had no
- 1:19Speaker 2: way of knowing, of course, that because of that car
- 1:22Speaker 2: it's occupant, a new and never to be forgotten chapter
- 1:25Speaker 2: in his life was about to be written.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Hi a fella, Well what do you know, Jim, Jim Welch,
- 1:40Speaker 3: Why say this is a surprise?
- 1:43Speaker 1: What brings you around business?
- 1:45Speaker 2: My boy?
- 1:45Speaker 3: Stop by your rooming house over at Willow's Pass, as
- 1:48Speaker 3: Dal told me I'd find you here, And.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Oh boy, what a doll. Yeah, that'll be Claudia.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Say what she's doing in a hecktwn like willow Pass.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Don't tell me she runs a boarding house. Her mother does.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Missus Hackett wouldn't care to put in a good word
- 2:00Speaker 3: for old Powell, would.
- 2:01Speaker 1: You with Missus Hackett? Sure? The doll busing? Never mind?
- 2:05Speaker 3: Missus Hackett, Hey, lay off, that's my territory.
- 2:08Speaker 1: All So that's it. That figure is you want to
- 2:12Speaker 1: look around see some of the old gang? Yeah? Yeah, later,
- 2:16Speaker 1: Pop done again? Study your night watchman? Yeah?
- 2:18Speaker 3: Sure is that bars of years around? No, mister Grayson's
- 2:22Speaker 3: up in Portland on business. Won't be back for another week.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Speaking of business, sim can we go inside?
- 2:27Speaker 2: Talk? Sure?
- 2:28Speaker 1: Come on? How you been doing? Jim? So?
- 2:32Speaker 3: So, I know they're going to be a little rough
- 2:35Speaker 3: When I left this out. It started in business for myself,
- 2:37Speaker 3: but I've managed. I'm glad to hear it made a
- 2:40Speaker 3: lot of contexts too, Phil.
- 2:42Speaker 1: One of them is about to pay off, big good, good. Yeah.
- 2:46Speaker 3: I got a bid in on a job in Nevada,
- 2:48Speaker 3: a big one chance I've been waiting for. I'm sure
- 2:52Speaker 3: I can land it, only I'm gonna have to get
- 2:54Speaker 3: some heavy equipment as well.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Remember all Man Faraday, Yeah, sure, he's still in business.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah, the old warhouse is going to retire on I
- 3:02Speaker 3: can pick up a lot of this stuff for a song.
- 3:04Speaker 3: How much twenty thousand? You're whistling quite a tune, bell,
- 3:10Speaker 3: I can manage about half of it. I am looking
- 3:11Speaker 3: for a guy who can put up the rest. That's
- 3:14Speaker 3: why I came to see you.
- 3:15Speaker 1: So me. You're kiddy.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Oh, I'm sure I can get the financing elsewhere, but
- 3:22Speaker 3: I wanted to give you a crack at it first.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Well, thanks, Jim.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I know you thought for a long time wanting to
- 3:27Speaker 3: get out on your own.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Remember always talk about it in the old days.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, just pipe stream for me, at least it doesn't
- 3:33Speaker 3: have to be. I'm offering you a chance to come
- 3:36Speaker 3: in with me, a partnership. A partnership, Yeah, be your
- 3:40Speaker 3: own boss. I'm gonna set up an office in San Francisco.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Want you to take over. Look Phil, No more along
- 3:46Speaker 3: road trip, staying in crummy hotels, cheap food. Hick Tom, Stop,
- 3:50Speaker 3: you're killing me. Listen, Jim. You know I'd go for
- 3:52Speaker 3: it in a minute only. I just don't have the money.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Wold Jaborrow. How about that uncle of yours.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Your old uncle Fred, Remember the last time I hit
- 4:02Speaker 3: him for a few bucks, was sure, but that was
- 4:05Speaker 3: to pay off a gambling debt. You've been a pretty
- 4:08Speaker 3: steady boy since then. This time it's different. It's a
- 4:11Speaker 3: chance for you to go into business for yourself. Yeah,
- 4:15Speaker 3: you know, Jim, Maybe you're right, he might come through.
- 4:18Speaker 3: How soon would you need the money? While I'm on
- 4:20Speaker 3: my way over to the coast. Should be passing back
- 4:22Speaker 3: this way in a couple of days. All right, Jim,
- 4:25Speaker 3: I'll see what I can do.
- 4:32Speaker 2: It's the opportunity you've long been waiting for, isn't it fair?
- 4:35Speaker 2: And more important, it would mean the end of the dull,
- 4:38Speaker 2: boring field trip. Instead, you'd have a comfortable, air cooled
- 4:42Speaker 2: office in the city, a fine apartment, good food, and
- 4:44Speaker 2: good time. It's what you've always wanted, isn't it? That
- 4:59Speaker 2: evening you're at the b pacing back and forth along
- 5:02Speaker 2: the front porch.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Look still, it's getting late.
- 5:07Speaker 5: What are we going to the dance?
- 5:08Speaker 4: Everybody's there by now.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I told your Claudia as soon as I get that
- 5:12Speaker 1: phone call.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Fine thing. Maybe I should have gone with Johnny when
- 5:17Speaker 4: he asked.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Me, okay, maybe you should have or with Ralph or Frank.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Or darling, I really didn't mean that.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I know there are a dozen guys in this town
- 5:27Speaker 3: who'd fall all over themselves for a chance to take you.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Out from all time.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Romeo is not the movie, you see what I mean?
- 5:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm sorry, and I barked at you like that.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Baby, You're just jittery about selling that doll.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Phone call has anything to do with it.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Has everything to do with it. Look, I was going
- 5:52Speaker 1: to keep this as a surprise, but.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Well, the call I'm expecting is from my uncle in
- 5:56Speaker 3: San Francisco. I phoned him earlier today, offered him a proposition.
- 6:00Speaker 3: He said he'd think it over and let me know tonight.
- 6:03Speaker 4: So that's it.
- 6:03Speaker 3: It's going to mean a lot to both of us. Baby,
- 6:05Speaker 3: you'd like to get out of his hick town, wouldn't you?
- 6:07Speaker 3: Would I you can have all the things you've always wanted.
- 6:09Speaker 3: An apartment in the city, smart clothes, nightclubs. Oh, I
- 6:13Speaker 3: could be Uncle Fred. Now wait here, baby, and keep
- 6:16Speaker 3: your fingers crossed.
- 6:28Speaker 4: We're darling what it is we're written.
- 6:29Speaker 6: Baby.
- 6:30Speaker 1: The old boy is gonna let me have the money.
- 6:32Speaker 1: He's sending me a check in the morning.
- 6:36Speaker 2: You're on your way now, aren't you, Phil, Yes, the
- 6:39Speaker 2: realization of a dream and the future looks fright for it.
- 6:43Speaker 2: For two days you wait eagerly for your uncle's check,
- 6:46Speaker 2: but it doesn't come. And then on the morning of
- 6:48Speaker 2: the third day, Jim Welch returns from his trip to
- 6:51Speaker 2: the coast and stops at the boarding house.
- 6:55Speaker 1: What film. Maybe the old GM changed his mind.
- 6:57Speaker 3: No, no, he gave me his word, Jim, I know
- 6:59Speaker 3: Uncle Fred'll send it, okay, but I've got to get
- 7:01Speaker 3: up to Metford and close that deal with Faraday. Look,
- 7:04Speaker 3: I've been trying to get my uncle on the phone, but.
- 7:05Speaker 1: There's no answer. Can you give me till this afternoon? Sure?
- 7:09Speaker 3: Sure, Phil, I'll check it at the hotel. I could
- 7:12Speaker 3: use some shut I tripped to the coast. Push me
- 7:15Speaker 3: call me when you get some word.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Huh, I will Jim Uren.
- 7:23Speaker 5: God, Hello, baby, I thought I heard you talking to somebody.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yeah, fellow, I was telling you about Jim Welch.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Oh he asked for the money.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Yeah, may o, man's been here and gone.
- 7:35Speaker 5: No check, Oh, Phil, I was it a wonderful chance
- 7:40Speaker 5: for both of us.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yeah, but there's nothing to do now but forget about it.
- 7:44Speaker 2: But you can't.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Forget about it. You can't let an opportunity like this
- 7:48Speaker 5: slip by check spend de lay. That's all probably over
- 7:53Speaker 5: the main post office in Twin Falls right now.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought of that.
- 7:57Speaker 3: I got to roll over there anyway, I'll ask, Well.
- 8:01Speaker 4: That's right, you have to drive over to the bank there,
- 8:05Speaker 4: don't you.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Yeah, pick up the company payroll. Phil.
- 8:09Speaker 4: When are you leaving for Twin Falls in a few minutes?
- 8:12Speaker 5: Why thought i'd ride over with you?
- 8:16Speaker 2: Sure?
- 8:17Speaker 4: I just feel like going.
- 8:18Speaker 5: For a drive, And besides, I have an idea.
- 8:22Speaker 4: I'd like to talk over with you.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Hello, Jim, this is Phil. Look, I'm falling from Twin Falls,
- 8:37Speaker 3: leaving right away. I should be back in Willow Pass
- 8:39Speaker 3: by two this afternoon.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Wait for me.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Yeah, you'll get the check for me.
- 8:43Speaker 3: No, no, but I've made some other arrangements. I have
- 8:47Speaker 3: the money for you, Jim, all.
- 8:48Speaker 7: Of it ten grand in cash.
- 9:10Speaker 2: It's done, isn't it. Bill. You've borrowed ten thousand dollars
- 9:14Speaker 2: at the company payroll money turned it over to your
- 9:17Speaker 2: new partner, Jim Wells. It was a risky move, but
- 9:20Speaker 2: you're certain everything will work out. As soon as your
- 9:23Speaker 2: uncle's check arrived and you're certainly. Will You'll replace the
- 9:27Speaker 2: money you took from the Grace and Construction Company and
- 9:30Speaker 2: be in the clear. But that evening, as you're having
- 9:33Speaker 2: dinner with Claudia.
- 9:37Speaker 5: Look, Bill, I thought this was supposed to be a celebration.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Why so gone?
- 9:43Speaker 1: I'm sorry?
- 9:45Speaker 4: Something on your mind?
- 9:47Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 9:48Speaker 4: The payroll money, that said, isn't it?
- 9:50Speaker 1: I've been thinking about it all day. I wish I
- 9:53Speaker 1: hadn't used it. I started regretting at the moment Jim left. Tom,
- 9:57Speaker 1: I shouldn't have touched it as.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Wrong easy, you want the whole world to know. What
- 10:04Speaker 5: are you worried about? You're gonna pay it back, aren't
- 10:07Speaker 5: you will? Your uncle's check arrived. Yes, so you've only
- 10:11Speaker 5: borrowed Grayson's ten thousand for a little while.
- 10:14Speaker 4: That's all.
- 10:15Speaker 1: It still isn't right?
- 10:15Speaker 4: Well maybe not, but it's done.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's done.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Oh love, darling.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Maybe if I told Grayson explain why I did it?
- 10:26Speaker 5: What's wrong with you? Out of your mind?
- 10:28Speaker 4: What good would that do?
- 10:29Speaker 1: I could make him understand? Oh?
- 10:31Speaker 4: Sure, get a great big laugh over it. Now you've
- 10:34Speaker 4: been dipping into the kill. I'll tut my boy. I
- 10:37Speaker 4: help yourself anytime.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Feel free?
- 10:39Speaker 1: Oh?
- 10:40Speaker 5: Come off at Phil. Anyway, you can't tell Grayson he's
- 10:44Speaker 5: in Portland free.
- 10:44Speaker 1: You'll be back in a few days.
- 10:46Speaker 4: And by that time this whole thing will be cleared up.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Your uncle's check will surely arrive tomorrow.
- 10:52Speaker 5: You will replace Grayson's money, and that'll be the end
- 10:55Speaker 5: of it.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I hope it will be.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Oh, come on, Phil, snap out of the things work out.
- 11:03Speaker 5: As soon as you get your uncle's check, you'll feel different,
- 11:06Speaker 5: a bottle all of it.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Yes, perhaps Claudy is right again, Phil, But the following
- 11:19Speaker 2: morning you're shocked to discover there's still no check in
- 11:22Speaker 2: the mail. Something's wrong, Phil, very wrong, And when you
- 11:27Speaker 2: reach the construction company office you're in for another shock.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Hello Phil, mister mister, I thought you were still up
- 11:38Speaker 1: in Portland.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Ah, well, I finished my affairs a little earlier than
- 11:41Speaker 3: I expected. Hey, I phoned you yesterday, but the boys
- 11:44Speaker 3: said that you've gone over to Twin Falls. They got
- 11:46Speaker 3: the fare Oel money.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Yes, that's right. Well, how's everything going fine? Just fine? Sir?

- 11:54Speaker 3: end of this week. Phil, I'm sure that excellent. Right
- 11:58Speaker 3: on scheduling. You really know how to run it out,
- 12:01Speaker 3: said my boy. Thanks, well, I think I'll run up
- 12:05Speaker 3: to the dam have a look around. See you later, Apol. Sure,
- 12:09Speaker 3: Miss Grayson, sure? Uh uh.
- 12:17Speaker 2: You're stand there trembling, don't you.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Phil.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Watch Grayson as he walks out of the office starts
- 12:22Speaker 2: up toward the dam. Only the two of you have
- 12:25Speaker 2: access to the company's safe, and if for some reason
- 12:28Speaker 2: or other he has occasion to look into the safe
- 12:31Speaker 2: find the ten thousand dollars missing. You're going to be
- 12:35Speaker 2: in for real trouble, aren't you. Quickly you reach for
- 12:38Speaker 2: the telephone put in another call to your uncle in
- 12:40Speaker 2: San Francisco. You're relieved when finally you hear his housekeeper's

- 13:54Speaker 1: I mean he had, i'd have gotten it by now. No,

- 16:54Speaker 3: safe at the office. I'll set the whole thing up,
- 16:57Speaker 3: make it look like a robber took that money.
- 16:59Speaker 2: What about them?
- 17:02Speaker 1: You'll be around Morty, probably in the office.
- 17:04Speaker 4: So how do you handle him?
- 17:05Speaker 1: Oh? I have to get him out of the way.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Don't worry. I'm not gonna hurt him. I'll slip up
- 17:10Speaker 1: and behind tap him easy, Just knock him out for
- 17:12Speaker 1: a little while.
- 17:14Speaker 4: You get away with it.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I gotta take the chance. It'll give me the time
- 17:17Speaker 1: I need to repay that money.
- 17:19Speaker 3: I don't follow in a week or so while drive
- 17:21Speaker 3: down to San Francisco, get the check.
- 17:23Speaker 1: From Uncle Fred. I'll catch it there and bring the
- 17:25Speaker 1: money back.
- 17:25Speaker 5: And then what you and kend to simply return the
- 17:28Speaker 5: money to the safe look out.
- 17:30Speaker 3: I'll figure something else, arrange for the money to be
- 17:33Speaker 3: found somewhere.
- 17:35Speaker 1: A locker at the bus depot.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Maybe an anonymous phone call to the police didn't work.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Claudia that sounds crazy enough to.
- 17:43Speaker 4: You're really worried about what you've done.
- 17:45Speaker 5: That you feel taking Grayson's money.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Yes, I wish I hadn't done it, but he'll get
- 17:51Speaker 3: it back every cent and I'll be out of this mess.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Okay, I hope you know what you're doing.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Ten minutes later, you park your car in the shadows
- 18:13Speaker 2: not far from the construction company office and hurry toward
- 18:16Speaker 2: the small building. He pressed back against the walls, tip
- 18:21Speaker 2: over a gas to him. You attract Pop's attention. There's
- 18:24Speaker 2: only one thing that worries you, say, Pop done again
- 18:27Speaker 2: as an old man, and you must be careful not
- 18:30Speaker 2: to hit him too hard. A thousand confused thoughts race
- 18:33Speaker 2: through your mind. Your knees are trembling, your heart palms furiously.
- 18:37Speaker 2: As Pop comes out of the office.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Who's that?
- 18:41Speaker 2: Your hand tightens around the wrench, but suddenly you're unable
- 18:45Speaker 2: to move, to think, to do anything but stare. And
- 18:49Speaker 2: then Pop turns towards you.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Hello, Pop, Oh, Hello, mister Hodgens. What you doing around

- 19:08Speaker 2: Somebody's getting kind of careless.
- 19:10Speaker 1: I'll take it, mister Hajji.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Yeah, here you are. You couldn't do it, could you fill?
- 19:22Speaker 2: At the last bit second you discovered you couldn't bring
- 19:25Speaker 2: the wrench down on the back of the old man's head.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Inside the office, you sit at your desk, pretend to work,
- 19:31Speaker 2: cast sidelong glances at Pop hitting across the room reading
- 19:35Speaker 2: his paper. You'll still time to carry out your plan,
- 19:40Speaker 2: but it would mean hitting old Pop and you just
- 19:43Speaker 2: can't do it. Can you fill?
- 19:48Speaker 1: You're really putting in some overtime, miss Jji? What time
- 19:53Speaker 1: is it? Almost two thirty? All through? Yeah, Pop, I'm
- 20:03Speaker 1: all through? Finished, good night? Not a film, mister yeah, yeah, sure,
- 20:22Speaker 1: I'm sure glad you dropped in.

- 20:51Speaker 2: That what you're gonna do.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, that's that's what I'm gonna do. Face the music.

- 21:28Speaker 2: gave it to Jim Welch. It's early morning when you
- 21:31Speaker 2: arrive at the construction office. The work crews are making
