- 0:01Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to radioi's Children's Story Hour. As a reminder,
- 0:07RADIOI is a reading service intended for people who are
- 0:11blind or have other disabilities that make it difficult to
- 0:15read printed material. Today, we're going to be reading several
- 0:21books about a day that comes every spring, and it's
- 0:25called earth Day. Earth Day is on April twenty second,
- 0:33So the first book I'm going to read is called
- 0:37earth Day with Yasmin. It's written by Sadia Barugi and
- 0:43illustrated by Debbie Romalia. The publisher of this book is
- 0:49Picture Window Books and it was published in twenty twenty six.
- 0:55Chapter one, Happy earth Day. It was April twenty second Earthday.
- 1:05To celebrate Miss Alex had taken the class outside near
- 1:11the playground. Yazmin saw a cart holding lots of cute
- 1:17little baby trees. Each class will plant a row of
- 1:22saplings on our school grounds. Missus Alex explained this is
- 1:28a way to honor our planet and help the environment.
- 1:34She picked up a spade and dug a small hole
- 1:37in the dirt. Then she showed the students how to
- 1:41carefully set a sapling inside the hole and cover it
- 1:46with more soil. Miss Alex dug more holes, Yazmin and
- 1:53her friends planted saplings into each one. How do saplings
- 2:00healthy earth, yes, Mien asked. Plants produce oxygen, which humans
- 2:07and animals need. Miss Alex said, they also take in
- 2:12harmful air, so the air we breathe is cleaner. Alie
- 2:17stroked a sapling softly, good little plant, he said, yes.
- 2:23Mien was curious. How can they clean the air when
- 2:26they're so tiny? She asked. We have to protect them
- 2:32until they grow into big, strong trees. Miss Alex replied, yes.
- 2:39Mien leaned over one of the saplings. We'll protect you,
- 2:44she whispered. The illustration here shows the young girl named
- 2:50Yasmin bending over a tiny little sapling baby tree. She's
- 2:58talking to this little tree, telling it we'll protect you.
- 3:04Chapter two, A Seed of an Idea. After school, yaz
- 3:11Mien waited on the playground for Mamma to pick her up.
- 3:15She could see the saplings waving gently in the wind.
- 3:20They looked even smaller from so far away. Suddenly, a
- 3:25rabbit hopped out from under a bush and nibbled on
- 3:30one of them. Hey, yes, Mien cried, get away. Show.
- 3:36The rabbit looked up. He twitched his nose and hopped
- 3:40back into the bushes. This just then Mamma arrived. Everything okay, yes, Mien,
- 3:47she asked, as they walked to the market next to
- 3:50the school. We planted tiny trees for Earth Day, Yes,
- 3:56Mien said, But a rabbit ate a leaf. Mama led
- 4:02Yasmine to the vegetable bins at the market. Well, leaves
- 4:07our part of a rabbit's diet, she said, But what
- 4:13if he eats all the leaves? Yesmin gasped. What if
- 4:17more rabbits common they eat all the happenings, Earthday will
- 4:21be ruined. Mama smiled and picked up some lettuce. Earthday
- 4:29honors everything on the planet. She explained, that includes rabbits
- 4:36and other animals. The earth is their home too. Yasmine
- 4:43looked at the lettuce. Then she saw some seed packets
- 4:47on a rack nearby. She had an idea. The illustration
- 4:54here shows Yasmine and her mother in the market as
- 5:00a little shopping basket, and yes, Mien is looking at
- 5:04a rack of seeds Chapter three, A Green Fix. The
- 5:13next day, Miss Alex's class went outside to check on
- 5:18their saplings. Several of them had chewed up leaves. What happened?
- 5:25Emma asked. It was rabbits, Yes, Mien reported with a sigh,
- 5:31I saw one yesterday. Hmmm. Miss Alex tapped a finger
- 5:36on her chin. Does anyone have any idea? Ali snapped
- 5:43his fingers. We should build a fence to keep the
- 5:46rabbits out, he said. But the earth belongs to rabbits too, yes,
- 5:52Mien said, and leaves are their food. So what should
- 5:57we do? Emma asked, I have an idea, Yes, Mien said.
- 6:03She reached into her bag. Then she held up a
- 6:07few young lettuce plants and a packet of lettuce seeds.
- 6:14What if we plant led us to feed the rabbits,
- 6:18she said. Miss Alex smiled, that's a wonderful idea. Yasmin,
- 6:26The students got to work planting a little garden for
- 6:30the rabbits. They chose a spot away from the new trees.
- 6:37The little plants will help feed the rabbits until the
- 6:41seeds grew into more lettuce plants. Yes, Means explained, hooray
- 6:48for helping the earth, Ali said, pumping his fist and
- 6:53the rabbits. Imma cheered, yes, Mean smile. The illustration here
- 7:00shows six children in the Yasmin's class and their teacher
- 7:06Miss Alex standing outside where they have planted the lettuce
- 7:11plants and some lettuce seeds. And in the background there
- 7:17is a sign that someone has painted that says Rabbits Welcome.
- 7:25So here's some information at the end of the story
- 7:29that says learn about Earth Day. Earth Day was first
- 7:35celebrated in nineteen seventy in the United States. The idea
- 7:40for this special day was inspired around the time of
- 7:44the Vietnam War. Today, it is celebrated every April twenty
- 7:49second around the world. More than one hundred and ninety
- 7:54countries honor Earth Day each year Earth Day as a
- 8:00special theme. Recent themes have been about supporting sources of
- 8:06clean energy like wind and solar, and reducing the use
- 8:12of plastics. In twenty sixteen, the United Nations chose Earth
- 8:19Day to sign the Paris Agreement. This is a promise
- 8:23many countries have made to help protect the environment. People
- 8:29mark the day by doing activities to help the environment.
- 8:33Here is a list of ways people celebrate Earth Day
- 8:37around the world, Cleaning up parks, beaches and other public spaces,
- 8:44organizing rallies or protests to teach people about the environment,
- 8:51working on recycling projects to reduce waste, planting trees, gardens,
- 8:58or other plants, Attending concerts or events that raise money
- 9:04for environmental issues, learning how to compost to help turn
- 9:10food scraps into rich soil. Helping with projects to protect
- 9:17wildlife in the community. Now, at the end of this book,
- 9:22there is a glossary, And the glossary is just a
- 9:26little dictionary that has words that you have heard in
- 9:30the story. The first word is diet, the food a
- 9:35person or animal eats. Next is environment the nature all
- 9:43around us. Harmful means dangerous or unhealthy. Honor to pay
- 9:51respect to let us a leafy, green vegetable nibble, to
- 10:00take a small bite, Oxygen a gas in the air
- 10:06that we need to breathe, produce or produce means to
- 10:14make ruined broken beyond repair. Sapling a young tree, soil
- 10:26healthy dirt needed for planting. And spade a small pointed shovel.
- 10:35And the last page of the book tells us that
- 10:39we can chat with Yasmin. Here's what she says. Gardening
- 10:45is a great way to honor Earth Day. Does your
- 10:49school or communities celebrate Earth Day? If they don't, ask
- 10:54your friends and family to join you for some Earth
- 10:58day activities now. The book also gives us a suggestion
- 11:03at the end to make a bird feeder. In the story,
- 11:09yesmine helps feed the wildlife near her school. Here's an
- 11:14idea for a bird feeder to feed the birds in
- 11:17your neighborhood. What you need cardboard such as an empty
- 11:23cereal box, a pencil, scissors, a tray or shallow dish
- 11:30with edges, bird seed, peanut butter, a spatula, and a
- 11:37piece of string or ribbon. Here's what you do. Number one,
- 11:43flatten the cardboard and draw a large circle on it.
- 11:47Cut out the circle. Number two, draw a smaller circle
- 11:53in the middle of the bigger circle, so that the
- 11:56shape looks like a doughnut. Cut out the smaller circle.
- 12:03Fill the tray or dish with bird seed. Use the
- 12:08spatula to spread a thin player of peanut butter on
- 12:12both sides of the cardboard donut. Set the doughnut into
- 12:17the tray to coat it with bird seed. Turn the
- 12:21doughnut over to cote the other side. Sprinkle extra seeds
- 12:26on the empty spots to fully cover it. Cover it.
- 12:30Tie a stream or ribbon through the hole in the doughnut.
- 12:35Find a spot outside to hang it. In a day
- 12:39or two, you might spot birds at your feeder. That
- 12:47was a great story. Now here's another one about some
- 12:50young people celebrating Earth Day. It's called Bradford Street Buddies,
- 12:57Springtime Blossoms. It was written by Jerdine Nolan and illustrated
- 13:04by Michelle Heninger. This book was published by green Light Readers,
- 13:10a division of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in twenty seventeen. Chapter one,
- 13:20Signs of Spring. It was homework time in the Perkins house.
- 13:27Jada and Jamal were thinking very hard, but they really
- 13:33wanted to go outside and play. In this first illustration,
- 13:39we see the twins, Jada and Jamal, sitting in their
- 13:44living room with their school books out, doing their homework.
- 13:49Rolling around on the floor are two cats. Continuing. Jada
- 13:57heard something. She ran to the window. Jamal followed along,
- 14:06so did Snugly and Cuddly a robin. My first sign
- 14:13of spring, announced Jada. Now I need only two more
- 14:18things for my list. I found something for my list,
- 14:23chuckled Jamal. What Jada asked? Mom and Dad working in
- 14:29the yard. That said, Jamal and Muzzy is helping. That
- 14:34is a sure sign of spring. Giggled Jada. The illustration
- 14:40here shows the two cats, snugly and cuddly looking out
- 14:46the window with Jada and Jamal. You can see through
- 14:50the glass of the window Jada and Jamal's mom and
- 14:54dad outside working in the yard. And there's their dog
- 14:59in His name is Muzzy. There looks like they're trimming
- 15:04some branches off a tree and planting some things in
- 15:09the yard. Continuing, it was a sunny afternoon on Bradford Street.
- 15:17Mister Perkins was trimming trees and bushes. Missus Perkins was
- 15:22planting flowers. Can we come outside, asked Jamal. Muzzy barked
- 15:30he wanted them to come outside too. Is your homework done?
- 15:34Missus Perkins asked, we're doing it now, said Jada. We
- 15:40can finish it quicker outside, added Jamal. Missus Pritchett wants
- 15:45us to find signs of spring. Jada explained, Can we
- 15:50come outside, please beg Jamal. Sure, last, mister Perkins, it's
- 15:56too nice to be inside anyway. I see birds building
- 16:01a nest. Jamal shouted, I found a fuzzy caterpillar, exclaimed Jada. Yes,
- 16:10spring is blossoming all around us, said Missus Perkin, the
- 16:16purple crocuses are already poking through the ground. The illustration
- 16:22here shows Jada and Jamal outside with their mother, Missus Perkin,
- 16:28and Jamal sees a bird's nest inside a tree, and
- 16:34it shows a fuzzy caterpillar that Jada is holding in
- 16:38her hand. Missus Perkins is kneeling on the ground planting things.
- 16:44And then the little purple crocuses, which are tiny purple flowers,
- 16:49have already poked up through the ground, and they're beautiful
- 16:53on the beautiful green grass outside. Continuing, and Jamal collected
- 17:02the big pile of branches mister Perkin had cut. What
- 17:07should we do with these sticks, asked Jada. Well, they're
- 17:11not just sticks, explained mister Perkin. They're for scythia and
- 17:18cherry tree branches. Oh, said Jamal. We'll keep some and
- 17:24give some to Missus Garcia, said Missus Perkins. Why would
- 17:30anyone want a bunch of dried up branches, asked Jada.
- 17:36Look closely, answered Missus Perkins. They aren't dried up at all. Oh,
- 17:43I see tiny yellow buds, observed Jada. I see pink
- 17:49buds on these, said Jamal. Missus Garcia wants to use
- 17:55some of the branch cuttings to grow new bushes and trees.
- 17:59And herry y, said mister Perkin. She can bring some
- 18:03inside too. They'll brighten up the house. That's right, agreed
- 18:10Missus Perkin. The buds will blossom in a vase filled
- 18:14with water in a warm house. Jada looked at Jamal
- 18:19and shrugged. I didn't know that. She said. Maybe Josh
- 18:25and mister Cornell would like some branches too, said Jamal.
- 18:30I'll go ask. I'll go with you, said Jada. My
- 18:34list is all done. Now mine too, said Jamal. The
- 18:40illustration here shows the family outside holding the beautiful branches
- 18:45of Precipia in their hands. And there's Muzzy, the little dog.
- 18:50The dog has a branch in his mouth too. Chapter two,
- 18:57A colorful surprise. The next morning, there was a colorful
- 19:03surprise in the kitchen. Mister and Missus Perkins were right.
- 19:09The buds had opened into yellow and pink blossom. Now
- 19:15our house is blooming all over, laughed Jamal. Could we
- 19:21bring a bouquet of branches to school from Missus Pritchett,
- 19:25Jada asked. Missus Perkins smiled. I made two extra bouquets
- 19:31last night, she said. Jada and Jamal clapped. On the
- 19:37way to school, the twins saw Carlita and Josh. We're
- 19:42bringing some branches to school from Missus Pritchett announced, Jamal.
- 19:47Did your branches bloom? Asked Jada. Oh, yes, Carlita said,
- 19:53the blossoms gave my mom the best idea. She made
- 19:57pink blossom cupcakes for our Deli. Mmmm, said Josh. Spring
- 20:05is blossoming and yummy. The illustration here shows the four
- 20:10children walking to school and they're holding some of the
- 20:14branches in their hands. When the four friends arrived at school,
- 20:21they saw a truck delivering trees. Missus Pritchett waved to
- 20:26her students, look at all the trees being unloaded from
- 20:31the truck. Jamal said, where did they come from? Josh asked,
- 20:36and where are they going? Wondered Carlita. Come inside, boys
- 20:40and girls, said Missus Pritchett. I will tell you all
- 20:44about it. To day is Earth Day, began Missus Pritchett.
- 20:50It's a special day to celebrate spring and the beauty
- 20:54of our earth. Planting trees and flowers helps our earth,
- 21:00as I like to say, she continued, People and plants
- 21:04make Perfect partners. Jada raised her hand. But what about
- 21:09all the new trees, she asked. Our city donated the
- 21:14trees in celebration of Earth Day, explained Missus Pritchett. The
- 21:19workers are planting them now. When they're done, we'll take
- 21:23a walk to see them and find signs of spring.
- 21:29The illustration here shows the classroom with all the children
- 21:32seated at their desks, and Missus Pritchett, the teacher, is
- 21:36standing in front of them, and on the board behind her,
- 21:40she has written people and plants make Perfect Partners. She's
- 21:46also written Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Chapter three Plans Blossom. Missus
- 22:00Pritchett's class walked all around the school. There were new
- 22:06trees planted in front of the school and at the
- 22:10back of the playground. Look at our new trees, Missus
- 22:14Pritchett said. Spring makes everything look beautiful and new. When
- 22:21they were back inside, Missus Pritchett asked, what signs of
- 22:25spring did you see? The trees were nice, said Jamal.
- 22:32The grass is getting a little greener, said Josh. But
- 22:36there are no flowers blooming, said Jada. Besides the new trees,
- 22:42spring is not blossoming at our school decided Carlita, perhaps
- 22:49spring needs a little help, suggested Missus Pritchett. Remember people
- 22:57and plants make perfect heart. Maybe we could plant an
- 23:03Earth Day flower garden, said Jada. We could put flowers
- 23:08between the new trees near the wall, added Josh. It
- 23:13would be so pretty, said Carlita. Hmm, maybe our parents
- 23:18would help, said Jamal. That's a wonderful idea. Missus Pritchett said,
- 23:25I'll check to see if we can plant a garden.
- 23:28On Saturday. The children clapped and cheered. During the week,
- 23:35there was a lot of excitement in Missus Pritchett's class.
- 23:39The children planned the garden. Parents brought in flowers and
- 23:44planting supplies. Missus Perkins brought daffodil bulbs, Missus Garcia brought daisies.
- 23:53Once Missus Pritchett talked with some of the parents, she
- 23:57had more exciting news. After we plant the garden, we
- 24:02will have a picnic, she said. Now Missus Pritchett's class
- 24:07was blooming all over. So on this illustration, Missus Pritchett
- 24:14and all the children in the class are making plants.
- 24:17They're standing at a table and they're drawing plans of
- 24:20how they might plant on the flowers. And on the
- 24:24blackboard there's a list and that says planting our garden flowers,
- 24:30shovel gloves, the things that they will need. Chapter four,
- 24:37Picture Perfect. On Saturday, the playground was busy. Mister Perkins
- 24:45and mister Cornell used shovels to turn over the soil.
- 24:51Other parents use hose to make groves. Some children painted
- 24:58rocks to border the garden. Other children helped Missus Pritchett
- 25:03pull weeds. Missus Garcia and Missus Perkins organize the picnic.
- 25:11Everyone helped to plant the flowers. The children dug holes
- 25:15and pushed the roots of the plants into the soil,
- 25:20then they covered them over. In no time, Missus Pritchett's
- 25:25class had planted their Earthday garden. The trees were new,
- 25:32the flowers were beautiful. Spring makes everything look new again,
- 25:39sighed Missus Pritchett. But that gray wall behind the garden
- 25:44does not look so beautiful and new. Carlya said it
- 25:49looks ugly, said Jada, we should do something about it.
- 25:55Josh said, like what, said Jamal. The kids formed a hudder.
- 26:03What would make the wall look better, asked Carlita. My
- 26:08Dad always says a little paint can make anything look
- 26:12new again, said Josh. That's a great idea, Jamal said.
- 26:18We could plant flowers. We could paint flowers on the wall,
- 26:22exclaimed Carlita. We could paint our school on it too,
- 26:27said Josh. The picture would remind us of all the
- 26:31fun we have had planting our garden. I know where
- 26:36we can get a ladder and more paint, said Josh.
- 26:40I'll get the brushes we used to paint the rocks.
- 26:44I'll see if there are more brushes in our classroom,
- 26:47added Jada. I have an idea for a special message
- 26:52on the wall, said Jamal. And together Missus Pritchett's class
- 26:59plants and painted a very colorful garden. So this last
- 27:08illustration shows all the children in the class standing beside
- 27:14their beautiful garden where they planted flowers, and the trees
- 27:19are nearby, and on the background is this gray wall.
- 27:25But they have now painted a picture of their school,
- 27:30which is a red brick building, and they have painted
- 27:35large flowers. They look like daisies because they have white
- 27:39petals and yellow centers, and at the top they have
- 27:44written the words people and plants make perfect partners. So
- 27:53this is the end of this story about Earthday. This
- 28:01concludes the Children's Story Hour for today. Your reader has
- 28:06been Patty. Please join us next time as we will
