- 1:35Speaker 2: Thursday with a high in the mid-80s. Could see some
- 1:37Speaker 2: showers and storms as we head into the weekend. Mid-80s

- 1:50Speaker 2: as well. Mentioned this yesterday, if you turned your radio
- 1:54Speaker 2: on to one of our sister stations, Superstar Country 96.1
- 1:57Speaker 2: KWS yesterday, you may have heard a familiar voice who
- 2:00Speaker 2: has rejoined the family here, Billy Brown. He's your new
- 2:02Speaker 2: morning guy over on Superstar Country KWS. Great to have
- 2:05Speaker 2: him back with us within the family here at the
- 2:08Speaker 2: Radio Ranch. He's going to join us later on the show. Also,
- 2:11Speaker 2: a big happening tonight at the Putnam County Commission meeting
- 2:14Speaker 2: where the controversial data center for Buffalo is going to
- 2:17Speaker 2: be discussed. We'll get into that story, some other things
- 2:19Speaker 2: in the news as well. Do want to pass this along, though.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I had several people who reached out to me about
- 2:25Speaker 2: Danny Jones, who is normally on the show with me
- 2:28Speaker 2: every Monday. Danny, of course, now enjoys dual citizenship in
- 2:31Speaker 2: both West Virginia and in California. Uh, Danny's in California
- 2:35Speaker 2: for a few weeks, reached out to him to put
- 2:36Speaker 2: him on the show yesterday. We couldn't reach him, got
- 2:39Speaker 2: a little bit worried about him. He did call me
- 2:41Speaker 2: later in the day though, and say, he's fine. He's,
- 2:43Speaker 2: he simply didn't hear his phone ring. So, uh, Danny, uh,
- 2:46Speaker 2: Here's what you got to do. You got to go
- 2:48Speaker 2: find somebody to turn that ringer back on again for you.
- 2:50Speaker 2: That's all you got to do, my friend. But he
- 2:52Speaker 2: called me and text me, you know, called and text
- 2:55Speaker 2: and said, very, very sorry. So we'll have him back
- 2:57Speaker 2: with us on Monday. Big doings over in the West End,
- 3:01Speaker 2: Elk City on Saturday, the annual October West event presented
- 3:04Speaker 2: by Charleston Urban Works. It's happening here to talk about
- 3:07Speaker 2: the executive director of Charleston Urban Works, Rick Cavender. Good morning, sir.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Good morning, Dave.
- 3:11Speaker 5: How are you doing, sir?
- 3:12Speaker 2: I'm doing fine. By the way, happy coffee day.
- 3:14Speaker 6: Oh, is that a thing?
- 3:15Speaker 2: I understand. It is National Coffee Day.
- 3:17Speaker 6: I knew yesterday was National Suns Day, I believe.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's always something. But today is National Coffee Day,
- 3:23Speaker 2: from what I understand. Are you a coffee eater?
- 3:25Speaker 6: You know what? I was for years. I actually stopped
- 3:28Speaker 6: about three months ago.
- 3:29Speaker 7: Really?
- 3:29Speaker 2: Because I was going to say, normally when you come
- 3:31Speaker 2: in here, you have some sort of.
- 3:32Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm trying to get all of my vices cleared.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Sort of eradicated. Caffeine was one of them.
- 3:40Speaker 2: One at a time. One at a time. We'll work
- 3:42Speaker 2: on the rest of them later.
- 3:43Speaker 1: All right.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I regret, as I told you earlier, I'm not going
- 3:46Speaker 2: to be able to be there this weekend. I'm going
- 3:47Speaker 2: to be on sort of a mini vacation. I'm there
- 3:49Speaker 2: in spirit, though, and most of our other station folks
- 3:51Speaker 2: are going to be here. Always a great time when
- 3:53Speaker 2: we do October West.
- 3:55Speaker 6: Absolutely. This is our 18th year for October West. Hard
- 3:58Speaker 6: to believe. 18 years in COVID insurance, sticking with us
- 4:01Speaker 6: as our title sponsor for several years. Um, and you know,
- 4:06Speaker 6: this is really a celebration of everything, the best that
- 4:09Speaker 6: the West side in Charleston has to offer, right? This
- 4:11Speaker 6: really is an encapsulation of, um, what a celebration really
- 4:15Speaker 6: should feel like when you're in Charleston, not just because
- 4:17Speaker 6: of the, you know, a hundred different beers that are
- 4:19Speaker 6: on tap that you can sample beer ciders and, and, uh, and,
- 4:22Speaker 6: and seltzers, but not just because of the live entertainment,
- 4:26Speaker 6: the two live bands and DJ EJ spending the entire time,
- 4:29Speaker 6: not just because of the October West games, of course,
- 4:31Speaker 6: that are back again. for I believe the 15th year
- 4:34Speaker 6: of the event, but mostly to celebrate the businesses that
- 4:40Speaker 6: make the Westside what it is and the culture and
- 4:44Speaker 6: the community that exists over on Charleston's Westside. And as
- 4:48Speaker 6: an organization, we're so proud to have been producing and
- 4:51Speaker 6: hosting this event for that long, for that reason alone.
- 4:54Speaker 6: This is our job is to shine a spotlight on
- 4:57Speaker 6: all these wonderful businesses that have made the decision to
- 5:00Speaker 6: make their investments on Charleston's Westside property owners, business owners,
- 5:05Speaker 6: and to wrap everything up for the year with this
- 5:07Speaker 6: big celebration. So, you know, we're once again just really
- 5:10Speaker 6: excited about it.
- 5:11Speaker 2: It's always a great event. And it's, you know, kind
- 5:15Speaker 2: of that kickoff to the fall season. And having done
- 5:18Speaker 2: this event, Rick, for several years, you never know what
- 5:20Speaker 2: the weather is going to be. I don't think, I mean,
- 5:22Speaker 2: in the times that I've been doing, it's never been really,
- 5:23Speaker 2: really bad, but we've never really had that cold either,
- 5:26Speaker 2: and we're not going to have it this weekend.
- 5:28Speaker 6: No, I mean, it's really kind of a perfect time
- 5:30Speaker 6: of year to put the event on, which is what
- 5:32Speaker 6: we've done with Fun with the Dome as well, right?
- 5:33Speaker 6: It's typically the beginning of May, not too hot, not
- 5:36Speaker 6: too cold. Um, and it's sort of the same thing here.
- 5:39Speaker 6: Time change hasn't happened yet. We're, I think we're a
- 5:41Speaker 6: week or so behind the time or about a month
- 5:43Speaker 6: behind the time change of this Saturday.
- 5:45Speaker 2: WVU and Marshall both with road games.
- 5:47Speaker 6: That's right.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Away games.
- 5:48Speaker 6: That was strategically planned to have this event on the
- 5:51Speaker 6: third cause they're both away games. Um, but, uh, you know, and,
- 5:56Speaker 6: but other organizations have caught onto that. We have so
- 5:58Speaker 6: many other, uh, great events happening, uh, this weekend and, and, and, and, uh,
- 6:03Speaker 6: surrounding weekends, uh, in October and September. And, you know,
- 6:07Speaker 6: there's just so much to do in Charleston. So, and
- 6:10Speaker 6: having said that, you know, we are going to be
- 6:11Speaker 6: working directly with Mountaineer Night Out, which is happening starting
- 6:14Speaker 6: at noon at the red carpet. And of course, City
- 6:17Speaker 6: Center Deb, which is a part of FestiFall, that happens
- 6:20Speaker 6: at seven o'clock on Saturday.
- 6:22Speaker 2: We're working with.
- 6:22Speaker 6: KRT to have a bus loop, a trolley loop running.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Actually, I was thinking about that. You're perfect in your
- 6:28Speaker 2: timing of this.
- 6:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Because the Mountaineer's Night Out is going to be At
- 6:33Speaker 2: the red carpet. And they're going to start at 10
- 6:35Speaker 2: in the morning because kickoff for WVU and Iowa State
- 6:38Speaker 2: is at noon.
- 6:38Speaker 9: Right.
- 6:39Speaker 2: So you're going to be kind of sandwiched in the
- 6:41Speaker 2: middle there. And then all the things I'm going to
- 6:43Speaker 2: talk about festival coming up a little bit later on
- 6:45Speaker 2: the show, but all those things that are going on.
- 6:47Speaker 2: And again, we got city center with a city center
- 6:51Speaker 2: data that you're calling it, that you mentioned it. With
- 6:53Speaker 2: the tribute to the Grateful Dead. So you can take, actually,
- 6:55Speaker 2: you can take in all three events.
- 6:56Speaker 8: That's right.
- 6:57Speaker 2: So talk about that tie-in with KRT.
- 6:59Speaker 6: Yeah, we're forming this partnership with KRT. We'll have more
- 7:02Speaker 6: information on our social media page today and tomorrow about it.
- 7:06Speaker 6: But we'll have a trolley running between the three events.
- 7:08Speaker 6: The times are still yet to be determined. So give
- 7:10Speaker 6: us a few. This is sort of the thing we
- 7:12Speaker 6: realized we had to wait till they announced the time
- 7:13Speaker 6: of the game to figure this out fully. And so
- 7:17Speaker 6: we're working really hard to get the final details solidified.
- 7:20Speaker 6: But there will be a trolley running between the three
- 7:22Speaker 6: events at certain times. So it does give people access
- 7:25Speaker 6: to safely hit all three if they want. And nobody
- 7:30Speaker 6: will have an excuse not to come and support all
- 7:32Speaker 6: the great things happening on the West Side with October West.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Take us through. You mentioned a couple of the things
- 7:36Speaker 2: that happened at October West. But for people that have
- 7:38Speaker 2: never been, you mentioned the music. You got all the
- 7:41Speaker 2: October games and the food and everything and the beers.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Take us through every single part of it.
- 7:47Speaker 6: Yeah, you walk in. The admission gate will be on
- 7:51Speaker 6: Tennessee Avenue. So if you walk into Tennessee Avenue, you
- 7:55Speaker 6: can get registered if you already bought your ticket. If
- 7:56Speaker 6: you go to charlestonurbanworks.org, you can buy your ticket now,
- 7:59Speaker 6: of course.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Come in.
- 8:01Speaker 6: We scan your ticket. You get your wristband. You get
- 8:04Speaker 6: your commemorative October West Cup. And you gain admission. You
- 8:09Speaker 6: walk in. We'll have beer vendors and food vendors lining
- 8:12Speaker 6: the streets all through Washington Street West and Tennessee Avenue.
- 8:17Speaker 6: The stage will be on Washington Street West as well.
- 8:20Speaker 6: You take your cup to any of the booths, get
- 8:24Speaker 6: your sample, your beer sample. We do, like I said,
- 8:26Speaker 6: we have about 100 ciders, beers, and seltzers on tap.
- 8:30Speaker 6: And then we have, I believe this year, 13 different
- 8:32Speaker 6: food vendors, which is maybe a record with the number
- 8:35Speaker 6: of food vendors we've had for this event so far. And,
- 8:37Speaker 6: of course, that's separate costs, of course. You'll be paying
- 8:40Speaker 6: them directly. But pretty much food for any pallet. So
- 8:44Speaker 6: that happens throughout the duration of the event. If you
- 8:45Speaker 6: come at 3 o'clock, that's VIP hour. So if you
- 8:48Speaker 6: want your VIP ticket, just go on to the site,
- 8:50Speaker 6: select VIP. It's $ 55 for VIP, $ 45 for general admission,
- 8:55Speaker 6: which starts at 4 o'clock. Event runs till 8 o'clock.
- 8:59Speaker 6: Live music will start at 4 o'clock on the City
- 9:01Speaker 6: National Bank stage. We have the Holler Generals and the
- 9:05Speaker 6: Alan Smith Band both performing live. throughout the evening, DJ
- 9:08Speaker 6: EJ will be spinning right around where the October West
- 9:10Speaker 6: games are going to be, which is right by the
- 9:12Speaker 6: old fountain hobby center in that grass lot. Those games
- 9:15Speaker 6: start at, I think, five 30. If you registered, if
- 9:18Speaker 6: you bought a ticket to October West, you can register
- 9:20Speaker 6: to play in the October game, October West games. So
- 9:23Speaker 6: we're going to have best dress contest. We're going to
- 9:25Speaker 6: have sausage toss contest, the keg rolling contest, Steinholding, which
- 9:29Speaker 6: I believe is the most popular. The Steinholding context.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Explain that because you talked about a couple of weeks ago,
- 9:34Speaker 2: but people, it's literally what the name implies.
- 9:36Speaker 6: You literally, we, we supply these enormous glass Steins. We
- 9:40Speaker 6: fill them with beer. Uh, we have a very long
- 9:42Speaker 6: table set up in the grass lot and people are
- 9:44Speaker 6: standing on both sides of it. They extend their arms
- 9:47Speaker 6: out with the Stein and the last person standing wins
- 9:50Speaker 6: the competition. And it looks a lot easier than it
- 9:53Speaker 6: really is. I'll say that it is not.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Actually get those from Steve animal. Those are his personal,
- 9:57Speaker 2: those are his shot glasses.
- 9:59Speaker 6: We go, we go, down to his cellar and pick
- 10:02Speaker 6: out the best ones and bring them to the event.
- 10:03Speaker 6: That's right.
- 10:04Speaker 2: And all of our stations are going to be there
- 10:06Speaker 2: as we always are. And we love the partnership that
- 10:08Speaker 2: we have with Charleston Urban Works for this and Foam
- 10:10Speaker 2: at the Dome and all the other things you do.
- 10:12Speaker 2: And we appreciate you working with us. We had a text.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Is it a family-friendly event? Is it okay for kids?
- 10:17Speaker 6: You know, kids are welcome to come. We don't really
- 10:19Speaker 6: have a lot for kids to do. We've definitely had
- 10:22Speaker 6: some folks bring their kids along. You know, usually... Smaller kids,
- 10:27Speaker 6: we don't really have anything for that middle-aged kid gap,
- 10:30Speaker 6: if you will. It is a 21 and over event
- 10:33Speaker 6: if you actually want to enjoy it, obviously, by law.
- 10:35Speaker 2: But they can come.
- 10:36Speaker 6: But they can absolutely come and they can hang out
- 10:38Speaker 6: with their parents, no problem at all. And we won't
- 10:40Speaker 6: charge a ticket price for a kid. We have a
- 10:42Speaker 6: red wristband, of course, for designated drivers. And we sort
- 10:45Speaker 6: of treat that the same for anybody else who's not
- 10:47Speaker 6: going to be drinking at the event or can't drink.
- 10:50Speaker 2: This is something I think is great that you guys
- 10:51Speaker 2: do for this and Phone With The Dump. And that
- 10:53Speaker 2: is the designated driver wristband.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Talk about that.
- 10:55Speaker 6: Yeah, at no cost at all. And you can actually
- 10:57Speaker 6: go on and buy your designated driver ticket at no cost.
- 11:00Speaker 6: You can just add it to your cart. If you're
- 11:02Speaker 6: planning on coming as a group and you've assigned someone
- 11:05Speaker 6: as your designated driver, when you get there, you scan
- 11:08Speaker 6: your ticket in, it'll show up as designated driver. We'll
- 11:10Speaker 6: give you a red wristband. And our volunteers who are
- 11:12Speaker 6: pouring know that if you have that wristband on, you
- 11:15Speaker 6: do not get access to any of the beer. And
- 11:17Speaker 6: of course, you still have access to all the food vendors.
- 11:20Speaker 6: The entertainment, you can even participate in the October West games.
- 11:24Speaker 6: But you would obviously not have access to the beer.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Now, of course, this is sponsored by Charleston Urban Works.
- 11:29Speaker 2: You're the executive director. Explain Charleston Urban Works for people
- 11:31Speaker 2: who may not know.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 6: So what I always say when it comes to these events,
- 11:35Speaker 6: you know, we're not an event organization. We don't exist
- 11:37Speaker 6: to put on events. We are a nonprofit urban economic
- 11:40Speaker 6: community development organization who just so happens to put on
- 11:43Speaker 6: events as a couple times a year as fundraisers for
- 11:46Speaker 6: the work that we do.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:48Speaker 6: So, you know, when you buy your ticket to this event,
- 11:52Speaker 6: you're not only signing up to have a great time
- 11:55Speaker 6: and to celebrate community. but you're also investing in the
- 11:58Speaker 6: implementation of really important programming that we work on throughout
- 12:01Speaker 6: the year. So whether that's our facade activation grant program,
- 12:05Speaker 6: we offer matching funds to any of our district business
- 12:08Speaker 6: or property owners who are looking to enhance their properties,
- 12:10Speaker 6: whether that's new brick pointing, doors, windows, signage, et cetera, paint,
- 12:16Speaker 6: our Westside Gateway Lighting Initiative, which as I'm sure you've
- 12:19Speaker 6: seen is happening right now, the new lampposts are live
- 12:22Speaker 6: going in the street now. That's a project we've been
- 12:25Speaker 6: working on for about eight years. Our crosswalk enhancement projects,
- 12:29Speaker 6: our public space enhancement projects, public art, business advancement projects
- 12:33Speaker 6: that we've worked on, shop local initiatives, events like this
- 12:36Speaker 6: help us raise the money to have the staff to
- 12:39Speaker 6: implement those programs. So, you know, the work we do,
- 12:43Speaker 6: of course, as you can imagine, I'm going to say
- 12:45Speaker 6: it's super important. I think a lot of people would
- 12:47Speaker 6: agree it's very important, the work that we do. We're
- 12:49Speaker 6: really proud of what we do. And we're proud of
- 12:52Speaker 6: the number of people that come out to this event
- 12:53Speaker 6: to celebrate the West Side.
- 12:56Speaker 2: You know, it is kind of– I said the West End,
- 12:58Speaker 2: and somebody– You've already gotten– They said the West End.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Where is that? Is that what Taze Valley people call
- 13:04Speaker 2: the West Side of Charleston? I'm sorry. I said West End.
- 13:06Speaker 6: I wasn't going to say anything, Dave. I know your heart.
- 13:08Speaker 2: All right.
- 13:09Speaker 8: All right.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Give us the website and give us all the info,
- 13:12Speaker 2: the time, starting time, so on and so forth again.
- 13:14Speaker 6: CharlestonUrbanWorks.org. You just go to the main site, click the
- 13:17Speaker 6: October West link. It'll take you to your ticketing page.
- 13:20Speaker 6: You can buy your tickets today. Tickets are the same
- 13:22Speaker 6: price at the gate, but we can't always guarantee that
- 13:25Speaker 6: there will be any left. There is a sellout threshold.
- 13:29Speaker 6: We came really close last year to selling out, so
- 13:31Speaker 6: definitely want to get your tickets ahead of time. Gates
- 13:34Speaker 6: will open a little bit before 3 o'clock for VIP
- 13:37Speaker 6: and then a little bit before 4 o'clock for general
- 13:39Speaker 6: admission tickets.
- 13:39Speaker 2: We had a text that said, is the far west
- 13:42Speaker 2: side upper Washington Street ready for the revival now that
- 13:44Speaker 2: Route 60 got repaid?
- 13:46Speaker 6: Listen, it's looking good. All of Washington Street West is
- 13:49Speaker 6: looking great. I'm so glad. I live right there on
- 13:52Speaker 6: the west side and i um it's so great to
- 13:53Speaker 6: see uh that happening and we're you know we are
- 13:57Speaker 6: actively right now working on a long-term plan for the
- 14:01Speaker 6: far west side and we're not ready to share all
- 14:03Speaker 6: the details yet because we have a lot of meetings
- 14:05Speaker 6: to to be had i'll have you back when you're
- 14:06Speaker 6: ready that's right so work will be happening.
- 14:09Speaker 2: All right keep an eye on my folks over there
- 14:10Speaker 2: i won't be there i won't be there to keep
- 14:12Speaker 2: an eye on them but uh you know Every now
- 14:14Speaker 2: and then, you've got to have a couple days off.
- 14:16Speaker 6: I'll make sure they check in.
- 14:17Speaker 2: In other words, keep an eye on Steve Animal. All right,
- 14:19Speaker 2: that's all I'm saying, just keep an eye on Steve Animal.

- 16:21Speaker 13: We know how polarizing politics has become. More than ever,
- 16:24Speaker 13: we need common sense leaders in government who focus on

- 17:33Speaker 2: We had a text about October West. Somebody asked about parking.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I mean, I can tell you in years past, I
- 17:38Speaker 2: have not always driven the station vehicles over there. Sometimes
- 17:41Speaker 2: I have just met people over there. Never had a
- 17:43Speaker 2: problem with parking. Really, under the bridge is the best
- 17:46Speaker 2: place to park. There's plenty of parking on the street.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Never had an issue with parking going over there. If
- 17:50Speaker 2: you want to turn your radio on yesterday... You heard
- 17:54Speaker 2: a familiar voice on our sister station, Superstar Country 96.1 KWS.
- 17:57Speaker 2: It's Billy Brown. And after a few years away, he's back,
- 18:01Speaker 2: and he's with me this morning in the JR Construction Studios.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Good morning, sir.
- 18:04Speaker 14: Yee-haw!
- 18:06Speaker 2: He's back. Good morning. Did the coffee just kick in? Man, yeah.
- 18:09Speaker 2: It's National Coffee Day, by the way.
- 18:11Speaker 6: I know.
- 18:12Speaker 2: I know. And guess what?
- 18:13Speaker 5: What?
- 18:14Speaker 2: I'm in the 29 to 32 percent. I don't drink coffee.
- 18:20Speaker 2: How do you do mornings and not drink coffee? I
- 18:21Speaker 2: don't know.
- 18:22Speaker 9: Well, it's a long story, but it has to do
- 18:24Speaker 9: with I gave up caffeine 20 years ago.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:27Speaker 9: And I had an engineer at a radio station in Nashville.
- 18:31Speaker 9: He had given up caffeine, and I asked him, what happens?
- 18:34Speaker 9: How do you kick the caffeine habit? And he explained
- 18:38Speaker 9: to me, he was like, let's say since this is radio,
- 18:42Speaker 9: am I on TV?
- 18:43Speaker 4: No.
- 18:44Speaker 2: I'm not on? No, it's just radio. I'll come back
- 18:46Speaker 2: when we're on TV.
- 18:47Speaker 11: Okay.
- 18:49Speaker 9: Say you put your hand four feet off the ground.
- 18:51Speaker 9: This is like maybe shoulder height here. And he said,
- 18:54Speaker 9: that's where your levels normally are. And then if you
- 18:57Speaker 9: drink caffeine, your levels, now my other hand is about
- 19:00Speaker 9: five feet off the ground. And then when the caffeine
- 19:03Speaker 9: wears off, that hand, it goes down to about three feet.
- 19:07Speaker 9: So you're going up and down with the caffeine. You
- 19:10Speaker 9: need to get another boost of caffeine. And I hear
- 19:13Speaker 9: that that happens the same with nicotine as well. So
- 19:17Speaker 9: he says- He was telling me, you kick that caffeine,
- 19:21Speaker 9: just stop it. And the first three or four days,
- 19:25Speaker 9: you're going to have migraines. And he was right. But
- 19:28Speaker 9: once you get through the migraines, now your level is
- 19:31Speaker 9: right there, steady at the four foot level that we
- 19:35Speaker 9: started off with. You know, you don't go up to
- 19:38Speaker 9: the five foot level or down to, you're not up,
- 19:41Speaker 9: you're not down. And you feel like you got energy
- 19:43Speaker 9: all the time because you're never in that down okay
- 19:47Speaker 9: time interesting yeah all right all right so you know
- 19:50Speaker 9: you weren't here for hey thanks for having me oh
- 19:52Speaker 9: oh no you're not done yet oh trust me you're
- 19:55Speaker 9: not done yet of course you weren't here a few
- 19:56Speaker 9: years ago went away for a while but now you're
- 19:58Speaker 9: back it happens yeah business but i want to let
- 20:00Speaker 9: people get to know you give us your bio i
- 20:02Speaker 9: know you're a west virginia guy but you've literally been
- 20:05Speaker 9: all over the country so give us the billy brown
- 20:07Speaker 9: bio i was born a Poor black child.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Was that the jerk? The jerk. The jerk.
- 20:14Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 20:15Speaker 2: I'm from Wheeling.
- 20:16Speaker 9: Grew up in Wheeling my first 20 years. Then I
- 20:20Speaker 9: moved to Maryland. I was in radio. Started out in radio.
- 20:25Speaker 2: What was it that made you get into radio? Let's
- 20:27Speaker 2: start there. I want to know the story.
- 20:29Speaker 9: Oh, my goodness. I was a sophomore in high school.
- 20:32Speaker 9: It was May of 1980. So that's 46 years now.
- 20:37Speaker 9: And a guy that was a junior, we had a
- 20:42Speaker 9: history class together. And we were playing football just on
- 20:46Speaker 9: the weekend. It was just like a weekend thing. A
- 20:49Speaker 9: bunch of people in the neighborhood. And he said he
- 20:51Speaker 9: had to go.
- 20:52Speaker 2: I'm like, where are you going?
- 20:53Speaker 9: He said, I got to go to work. And I
- 20:56Speaker 9: asked him where he worked. And he said at this
- 20:58Speaker 9: radio station in downtown Wheeling, 1400 AM. And I said,
- 21:04Speaker 9: can I tag along?
- 21:06Speaker 6: He said, yeah.
- 21:07Speaker 9: So I went down to the radio station. I was
- 21:09Speaker 9: a DJ at the roller rink on Wheeling Island, which
- 21:12Speaker 9: is no longer there. And I also DJed around town
- 21:18Speaker 9: and stuff. So I get down to the radio station
- 21:21Speaker 9: with him. This guy's a junior in high school. This
- 21:26Speaker 9: was a weekend shift that he was doing, but he
- 21:28Speaker 9: was the full-time 7 to midnight DJ on the radio
- 21:34Speaker 9: in Wheeling as a junior in high school. And his
- 21:37Speaker 9: name was Fred Del Fiat. Everybody called him Sonny. His
- 21:41Speaker 9: middle name's Andre. So his whole life, his whole career
- 21:43Speaker 9: has been Sonny Andre.
- 21:45Speaker 2: And he's been in Dallas, Texas.
- 21:47Speaker 9: There's been a bunch of people from Wheeling. Dave Smith
- 21:49Speaker 9: went out to Columbus, Ohio. And John Klein was the
- 21:53Speaker 9: morning guy in Pittsburgh for two decades. But Sonny told me,
- 21:59Speaker 9: I was just standing in the hallway looking through the
- 22:01Speaker 9: glass and he's talking on the radio and the speakers
- 22:04Speaker 9: are in the ceiling and i'm like this is so
- 22:06Speaker 9: cool the bug bit me yeah and i said sonny
- 22:09Speaker 9: this is what i want to do he said you
- 22:11Speaker 9: can't do it i said what do you mean i
- 22:13Speaker 9: can't do it you're doing it yeah but you can't
- 22:15Speaker 9: do it that was the wrong thing to say but
- 22:19Speaker 9: he said you can't even say the call letters because
- 22:21Speaker 9: back then you know it's just like uh that private
- 22:24Speaker 9: parts movie wnbc you know what you know uh you
- 22:28Speaker 9: had to say the w yeah get that l in
- 22:31Speaker 9: there like Like the word milk.
- 22:34Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 2: You couldn't just say W.
- 22:36Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 22:36Speaker 2: It had to be W. W. And a lot of
- 22:38Speaker 2: radio stations used to even put it on a big
- 22:41Speaker 2: piece of paper. D-O-U-B-L-E dash U. W. W. W.
- 22:47Speaker 9: And the afternoon guy, my friend Sonny, who graduated a
- 22:51Speaker 9: year ahead of me, he's the 7 to midnight guy.
- 22:54Speaker 9: The full-time afternoon guy was always saying W. 14 W
- 22:58Speaker 9: to K, W to K. And I'm like, oh, he can, he,
- 23:01Speaker 9: you can pay him to be a full-timer saying W, W, W, W,
- 23:04Speaker 9: but I got to say W.
- 23:06Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 23:07Speaker 2: And I said, ah, it's no problem. He put me
- 23:09Speaker 2: in a studio back in the day. We didn't have
- 23:11Speaker 2: this digital stuff. Big reel to reels.
- 23:14Speaker 7: Yep.
- 23:15Speaker 9: You got this reel to reel tape going and I'm
- 23:17Speaker 9: reading all this stuff and I'm practicing the call letters.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Played it back. He was right.
- 23:24Speaker 6: I stunk.
- 23:25Speaker 2: I was horrible. But then I wanted to get it.
- 23:29Speaker 2: So when the bug bites you, it's in you. It
- 23:31Speaker 2: got me in a similar way. And I've told this
- 23:34Speaker 2: story before. I've always been around. Radio was always on
- 23:38Speaker 2: in our house growing up, always. And I can remember
- 23:42Speaker 2: going with my grandparents to Beckley. And we were there
- 23:46Speaker 2: shopping or something. And we stopped in this hardware store.
- 23:50Speaker 2: And somebody, it may have been Fred Persinger. He doesn't
- 23:53Speaker 2: remember it. I don't know. But the local guy was
- 23:56Speaker 2: doing a live broadcast there and it was the culmination
- 23:59Speaker 2: of a contest. And it was like, you had to
- 24:00Speaker 2: be present to win. There's like a hundred people in
- 24:02Speaker 2: this store and he gets ready to drop the winner
- 24:04Speaker 2: and he sends it back to the station for like
- 24:06Speaker 2: one more song before they, and I said, that's what
- 24:09Speaker 2: I want to do right there. And I was obsessed
- 24:12Speaker 2: with it. And I'm like you, I was a sophomore
- 24:13Speaker 2: in high school. when I started at the high school
- 24:16Speaker 2: radio station, then I was a senior in high school
- 24:18Speaker 2: when I actually started doing it professionally. What is it
- 24:20Speaker 2: about this business though? And just off the top of
- 24:23Speaker 2: your head, where all have you worked? I mean, we
- 24:25Speaker 2: know Charleston. Oh my goodness. Give us the cities.
- 24:28Speaker 15: Okay.
- 24:28Speaker 9: I left Wheeling and I went to Frederick, Maryland, about
- 24:33Speaker 9: an hour west of Baltimore, hour northwest of DC. I
- 24:38Speaker 9: was working midnight to six in Frederick. A year later,
- 24:41Speaker 9: I was seven to midnight. I got promoted up to
- 24:44Speaker 9: 7 to midnight. A year later, I was 3 to
- 24:47Speaker 9: 7 in the afternoon. I was assistant program director, and
- 24:49Speaker 9: I was the music director. But I got a part-time job.
- 24:52Speaker 9: I applied for part-time work in the big city, Washington, D.C.,
- 24:56Speaker 9: and Baltimore. I applied at the same time, and it
- 25:00Speaker 9: turns out that I got hired by both two different
- 25:06Speaker 9: radio stations, a radio station in D.C. and a radio
- 25:08Speaker 9: station in Baltimore. So at one time, I was working
- 25:11Speaker 9: all three radio stations, And I was driving a triangle
- 25:14Speaker 9: from Frederick down to DC, up I-95 to Baltimore, back
- 25:19Speaker 9: to DC. Well, I guess I didn't really do the
- 25:21Speaker 9: triangle because I went back to DC before I came
- 25:23Speaker 9: back to Frederick, Maryland. And we didn't have any way
- 25:28Speaker 9: of recording.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Shows back then. No, everything was live, yeah.
- 25:30Speaker 9: It was live, and I was putting in a lot
- 25:32Speaker 9: of miles. I did that for almost a year. And
- 25:35Speaker 9: then I got a job down in Atlanta, Georgia. From Atlanta,
- 25:39Speaker 9: I went to Nashville. A couple of years later, I
- 25:41Speaker 9: was in Pittsburgh. Uh, I'd met, I'd met, I was
- 25:46Speaker 9: married back in the day and the lady I married
- 25:50Speaker 9: and mother of my kids was from, I met her
- 25:52Speaker 9: in Atlanta. We moved to Nashville while she was pregnant
- 25:57Speaker 9: with our first child in her eighth month. I moved
- 26:00Speaker 9: to Pittsburgh. She goes to Pittsburgh, has the baby, our, our,
- 26:06Speaker 9: our oldest daughter, Samantha, who's getting married in a couple
- 26:09Speaker 9: of weeks.
- 26:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Uh, I knew she wasn't a Pittsburghian.
- 26:16Speaker 9: A yinzer.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 26:19Speaker 2: So there was a job.
- 26:21Speaker 9: Opening back in Atlanta where I met her. So we
- 26:25Speaker 9: went back to Atlanta like 10 months after I was
- 26:27Speaker 9: in Pittsburgh. They were not too happy with me, but
- 26:29Speaker 9: I went back to Atlanta. And from there, I went
- 26:33Speaker 9: back to Nashville. So I've been in Atlanta twice, Nashville twice.
- 26:39Speaker 9: I left Nashville to go to Yakima, Washington, two hours
- 26:44Speaker 9: southeast of Seattle. I was programming a radio station and
- 26:50Speaker 9: hosting a three-person morning show when a guy I worked
- 26:54Speaker 9: with in Nashville ended up in New Orleans, and they
- 26:59Speaker 9: needed a guy to host their three-person morning show. They
- 27:04Speaker 9: called me, asked me to record the show, sent them
- 27:08Speaker 9: a copy of, one hour of the show. And, um,
- 27:13Speaker 9: the guy's name was John Roberts. He called me and
- 27:15Speaker 9: he said, the three of you up in little Yakima,
- 27:18Speaker 9: Washington are better than any morning show in new Orleans,
- 27:21Speaker 9: but he only wanted one person. He didn't want to
- 27:24Speaker 9: hire the show. So I went to new Orleans for
- 27:26Speaker 9: a couple of years. Then I ended up in Miami for, um,
- 27:31Speaker 9: I think four years. at a big country station. First
- 27:36Speaker 9: time I ever did country radio, Miami, Florida.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Because when you think country music, you think Miami.
- 27:43Speaker 9: Well, you know, the thing is, my kids were just
- 27:46Speaker 9: growing up, and we would take them on horseback riding.
- 27:51Speaker 9: And the guide, we were in the Fort Lauderdale area.
- 27:55Speaker 9: I worked in Miami, but we were living in the
- 27:57Speaker 9: Fort Lauderdale area. And the guy who was the guide
- 28:01Speaker 9: on the horse ride was from South America and Brazil.
- 28:06Speaker 9: And everybody, he would say, yeah, they think that all
- 28:09Speaker 9: I want to listen to is Spanish music.
- 28:12Speaker 2: But he said, we're cowboys. We are cowboys in Brazil.
- 28:19Speaker 2: So they loved country music. So you're in Miami, okay, so...
- 28:25Speaker 2: How do you end up back in West Virginia? Did
- 28:27Speaker 2: you have it on your radar to come back to
- 28:29Speaker 2: West Virginia? No, no, no. I was thinking because a
- 28:32Speaker 2: lot of people say, well, I'm going to get back
- 28:33Speaker 2: to West Virginia or whatever their home state is as
- 28:35Speaker 2: soon as I can.
- 28:35Speaker 9: That wasn't part of your plan? No, I got arrested
- 28:38Speaker 9: and they made me. Well, from Miami, I actually went
- 28:44Speaker 9: to Orlando. And from Orlando, I went to Tampa. And
- 28:50Speaker 9: I wanted to get back into programming.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 28:53Speaker 9: And a guy that I worked with in Yakima, Washington,
- 28:56Speaker 9: I mean, way back, calls me up, asked me to
- 29:00Speaker 9: come out to Boise, Idaho. So I went out to Boise,
- 29:04Speaker 9: Idaho to program. I did that for two and a
- 29:07Speaker 9: half years. You would love Idaho. It's just like West Virginia.
- 29:12Speaker 9: Their hills are a little bit higher. But with a
- 29:14Speaker 9: lot of potatoes.
- 29:16Speaker 2: You know, most of those big, good Idaho potatoes get
- 29:19Speaker 2: shipped out. That's probably true. You get better Idaho potatoes
- 29:22Speaker 2: if you're not in Idaho. Makes sense.
- 29:24Speaker 9: But I lived a couple of blocks from Boise State,
- 29:29Speaker 9: the Broncos, and I thought that blue field was something new. Well,
- 29:34Speaker 9: they did that back in 1986, I found out. I
- 29:37Speaker 9: didn't know because we didn't watch, you know. back in
- 29:40Speaker 9: the 80s, early 90s, I don't think we were able
- 29:43Speaker 9: to watch.
- 29:43Speaker 2: No, no, probably not. Boise, Idaho football.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:47Speaker 2: But now they're all over the place now. So I
- 29:51Speaker 2: loved it. You'd love Idaho. If you love West Virginia,
- 29:54Speaker 2: you'd love Idaho.
- 29:55Speaker 6: Okay.
- 29:56Speaker 2: But after two and a half years, and I was single.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 30:00Speaker 2: And I just got to thinking, I got to go back.
- 30:05Speaker 2: I got to go home.
- 30:06Speaker 11: Right.
- 30:06Speaker 9: And out of all the places, yeah, I loved Atlanta.
- 30:09Speaker 9: I loved Miami. I loved Orlando. I loved Nashville, too.
- 30:15Speaker 9: But this is West Virginia. It's where I grew up. And,
- 30:19Speaker 9: of course, I grew up in the northern panhandle. And
- 30:23Speaker 9: this was a little bit different. Yeah.
- 30:26Speaker 2: The two good things I can say, and it's not
- 30:28Speaker 2: going to sound good, but... But don't get fired on
- 30:31Speaker 2: your second day. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 30:33Speaker 2: This is sentimental. Sentimental.
- 30:36Speaker 9: I got to spend... I didn't know where I was
- 30:38Speaker 9: going to live when I moved back. So my sister...
- 30:42Speaker 9: I have two sisters. My sister had a house in Crosslanes.
- 30:47Speaker 9: So I stayed with her. I'll pay her rent and
- 30:50Speaker 9: figure out where I want to live. Well, she'd always
- 30:52Speaker 9: been single. And she had a three... Bedroom, yeah, three-bedroom,
- 30:58Speaker 9: two-and-a-half bath house, fenced-in backyard. So I just decided I
- 31:05Speaker 9: don't care if anybody thinks weird about us or not.
- 31:07Speaker 9: We're grownups, and we're both single, and I'll help her
- 31:12Speaker 9: with the rent, and everything went well. And that was 2017.
- 31:18Speaker 9: In 2020, she passed away with COVID.
- 31:21Speaker 2: I remember that, yeah. And my mother was aging. So
- 31:25Speaker 2: my other sister in Ripley, she and her husband bought
- 31:30Speaker 2: the house next door to their house in Ripley and
- 31:33Speaker 2: brought my mother down from Wheeling. So I got to
- 31:36Speaker 2: spend the last three years of my sister Patty's life
- 31:40Speaker 2: with her.
- 31:41Speaker 9: And then I got to spend the last four or
- 31:44Speaker 9: five years with my mother. So, you know, yeah, I
- 31:48Speaker 9: lost my mother. I lost my sister. But that's part
- 31:51Speaker 9: of life. I'm so glad I came back to West Virginia.
- 31:55Speaker 9: And then I got to meet you.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Well, I don't know about that.
- 31:59Speaker 12: All right.
- 31:59Speaker 2: So I got to take a break. And I know
- 32:01Speaker 2: I told them I'd only steal you for a couple minutes.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Did I talk too long? Because I don't do talk radio. No,
- 32:05Speaker 2: you're fine. You're fine. But I need to take a break.
- 32:08Speaker 2: When I come back, I want to cut you loose,
- 32:10Speaker 2: but we're going to play a very popular game with
- 32:13Speaker 2: new people. Oh, Dave, we're out of time. No, no,
- 32:16Speaker 2: it's called 10 Questions. We're going to play that with
- 32:19Speaker 2: Billy Brown when we come back. 20 minutes away from 10.

- 35:08Speaker 2: We're talking to Billy Brown. Away from the microphone, Billy.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Billy's the new old morning guy on Superstar Country 96.1 KWS,
- 35:15Speaker 2: one of our sister stations. Away from the microphone, what
- 35:18Speaker 2: keeps you busy? Well, you know what I'm talking about there,
- 35:21Speaker 2: Boo Meyer. You just go out there and get her done.
- 35:25Speaker 2: What keeps me busy? Yeah, away from the microphone. Hobbies
- 35:27Speaker 2: and whatnot. Bowling and golf.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Okay.
- 35:33Speaker 9: And I'm still trying to perfect both of them, and
- 35:36Speaker 9: I'm not close to doing that.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Well, but you're having fun while you're doing it.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Give us one really, really funny story from the business,
- 35:44Speaker 2: one or two of the funniest stories, and then we're
- 35:46Speaker 2: going to do 10 questions and get you back to work.
- 35:48Speaker 11: Wow.
- 35:49Speaker 1: One or two.
- 35:49Speaker 2: I mean, off the top of your head, funny story,
- 35:51Speaker 2: funny story. So funny, funny, unique, anything that if people
- 35:55Speaker 2: ask you, you know, like I'm asking you now, like what,
- 35:57Speaker 2: what's something you were in this city and this happened,
- 36:00Speaker 2: you were in, I mean, everybody's got one or two.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Give me one. One time. I don't know.
- 36:07Speaker 9: I know that I was in Nashville and I wasn't
- 36:09Speaker 9: working for a country radio station and Aerosmith was coming
- 36:14Speaker 9: to town and the lady called I guess this was
- 36:18Speaker 9: Steven Tyler. I guess it was Aerosmith's manager or something.
- 36:21Speaker 9: She calls me and she says, who do you want
- 36:25Speaker 9: to interview? Because the show's coming up Wednesday night.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Who do you want to interview?
- 36:30Speaker 9: And I said, well, who can I interview? Who may I?
- 36:35Speaker 9: She said, anybody in the band. All I could think
- 36:37Speaker 9: of was Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. And I said, well,
- 36:44Speaker 9: can I talk with Steven Tyler? And she says, yes,
- 36:47Speaker 9: he'll call you tomorrow. This was on a Monday. The
- 36:50Speaker 9: concert's on Wednesday. He'll call you tomorrow at one o'clock.
- 36:54Speaker 9: You call him Steven. Not Steve, not Stevie, not Steve-o.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Steven.
- 37:00Speaker 9: And it never even dawned on me because we've all
- 37:01Speaker 9: said Steven Tyler so much in our lives.
- 37:05Speaker 2: It didn't even dawn on me to call him Steve
- 37:07Speaker 2: or Stevie or Steve-o. Okay, so yeah.
- 37:10Speaker 9: Then he calls up. We're talking, had a great conversation.
- 37:14Speaker 9: At the end of the conversation, this is back in
- 37:16Speaker 9: the day with the recording tape instead of digital. And
- 37:19Speaker 9: I asked him if he, you know, we're all done.
- 37:22Speaker 9: I'm going to edit the interview and I'll play it later.
- 37:25Speaker 9: And the tape's still rolling. And I asked him, I said,
- 37:27Speaker 9: can you say, hey, this is Steven Tyler and you're
- 37:30Speaker 9: listening to Y107. And he's like, yeah, you rolling? I'm like, yeah,
- 37:35Speaker 9: we're rolling.
- 37:36Speaker 2: He goes, all right. And he starts singing. Hey, this
- 37:41Speaker 2: is Steven Tyler.
- 37:43Speaker 11: Why?
- 37:44Speaker 9: Because we love you, 107. Ticked the rock station off.
- 37:50Speaker 9: When we got out to the concert the next night,
- 37:53Speaker 9: they were just livid. And I'm thinking, this is a
- 37:59Speaker 9: different company. I don't know who these people are. And
- 38:02Speaker 9: I'm sure they had the same choice.
- 38:04Speaker 2: That I had.
- 38:05Speaker 9: Whom would you like to speak with? Well, I was
- 38:10Speaker 9: working three to seven in the afternoon. The meet and
- 38:13Speaker 9: greet before the show was at seven o'clock. I get
- 38:16Speaker 9: out there about seven 30 and it's an outdoor venue.
- 38:20Speaker 9: The promotions guy, young guy in his twenties or maybe
- 38:23Speaker 9: 19 at the time, he, I had tickets to get there,
- 38:27Speaker 9: but I didn't have any passes to get to the
- 38:29Speaker 9: backstage and the meet and greet and the picnic and
- 38:32Speaker 9: all that stuff. And this guy, Mike, we called him Mikey.
- 38:35Speaker 9: Mikey comes, he's like, and I was with my wife
- 38:38Speaker 9: at the time. He's like, man, get back.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Come on.
- 38:41Speaker 2: You got to come now because Steven's been looking for you.
- 38:44Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, right. I'm telling you.
- 38:47Speaker 9: We walked back there and Steven Tyler stood there and
- 38:50Speaker 9: spoke with my wife, Pam, at the time and me
- 38:55Speaker 9: for over 20 minutes like we went to school together.
- 38:57Speaker 7: Really?
- 38:58Speaker 2: That's how nice he is. Okay.
- 39:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 39:00Speaker 2: All right. So that's, all right. But not everybody's got
- 39:02Speaker 2: that story for sure. I don't have one like that.
- 39:04Speaker 2: All I got is, you know, Steve Animal. It's the
- 39:06Speaker 2: only Steve I have. Can we get a lock on
- 39:08Speaker 2: that door?
- 39:10Speaker 7: All right.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Even though you're not a new employee anymore, I'm going
- 39:13Speaker 2: to give you the new employee treatment, Billy. You have
- 39:14Speaker 2: rejoined the family here at the Radio Ranch. You were
- 39:16Speaker 2: actually working here when I joined the company six years ago.
- 39:20Speaker 2: So you and I get to do a little 10 questions.
- 39:22Speaker 2: I do this with all the new on-air staff members.
- 39:25Speaker 2: I'm holding in my hand 10 totally at random questions.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Please verify, Billy, you have not seen the questions. No,
- 39:32Speaker 2: I haven't. I didn't even know the last one you
- 39:34Speaker 2: asked me. I'm going to ask you 10 questions. I'd
- 39:36Speaker 2: appreciate you answering them as quickly as possible in a
- 39:39Speaker 2: rapid-fire style. The questions were formulated in a hidden laboratory
- 39:43Speaker 2: somewhere near Kenna. And to our listeners at home, as always,
- 39:46Speaker 2: do not try this at home. And as always... No wagering.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Billy Brown, are you ready? Yes. Question one. That's one
- 39:54Speaker 2: question right there. No, that's the same. Question one. Anyone
- 39:58Speaker 2: who knows you knows you're a hardcore Steelers fan. All-time
- 40:02Speaker 2: favorite Steeler.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Oh, my.
- 40:04Speaker 2: How can you have one? I would have to say.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Apparently he didn't catch the assignment about the rapid fire,
- 40:13Speaker 2: but go ahead.
- 40:15Speaker 8: Oh.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Rocky Blyer.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Okay.
- 40:19Speaker 2: In a movie about your life, who would play Billy Brown?
- 40:22Speaker 5: I would.
- 40:24Speaker 12: Okay.
- 40:25Speaker 2: That's a new one.
- 40:26Speaker 12: No, really?
- 40:27Speaker 2: What if you're dead? Who's going to play you? Oh,
- 40:29Speaker 2: who would play me?
- 40:30Speaker 10: Oh, I.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Mean, who could play me? That's the question. I mean,
- 40:36Speaker 2: who's going to play me? Who could play me? Probably. Oh, man.
- 40:42Speaker 2: All these names are coming up in my head, and
- 40:46Speaker 2: they're dead. Yeah, we'll get back to that. All right.
- 40:51Speaker 2: The name of your favorite pet as a kid? Casey. Summer, winter, spring,
- 40:59Speaker 2: or fall?
- 41:01Speaker 10: Yes.
- 41:02Speaker 2: The one food you absolutely will not eat no matter what?
- 41:08Speaker 2: I got a whole list. Okay, give me one. Give
- 41:11Speaker 2: me one, Billy. Lima beans.
- 41:14Speaker 5: All right.
- 41:14Speaker 2: The one talent you have away from radio that people
- 41:17Speaker 2: would be surprised to know you have? Don't get me fired, Billy. Oh, man.
- 41:29Speaker 2: I did that when I was at Marshall. I play
- 41:37Speaker 2: guitar and write and write songs. Okay, there you go.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Ginger or Mary Ann? Mary Ann. Best friend, first name only,
- 41:46Speaker 2: from your childhood?
- 41:49Speaker 12: Robert.
- 41:50Speaker 2: You're driving across country and can only listen to one artist,
- 41:53Speaker 2: and it cannot be a country artist. Who would it be?
- 41:58Speaker 2: Katy Perry. And finally, what color of clothing do you
- 42:01Speaker 2: have the most of in your closet?
- 42:02Speaker 7: Blue.
- 42:03Speaker 2: All right. Back to the other one. In a movie
- 42:06Speaker 2: about your life, who would play Billy Brown?
- 42:10Speaker 7: Wow.
- 42:10Speaker 9: I'm trying to think of somebody that is not real
- 42:15Speaker 9: tall and not real short.
- 42:16Speaker 2: But still ruggedly good-looking.
- 42:18Speaker 11: 5'8.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Handsome, dashing, modest. It would have to be Keith Urban.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Keith Urban. All right. I don't know. Yeah, that's what
- 42:34Speaker 2: I was thinking. Throw the Australian in there. Billy Brown, congratulations.
- 42:37Speaker 2: You've completed 10 questions. Welcome back to the team. You
- 42:39Speaker 2: can catch Billy Brown weekday mornings starting at 5 a.m.
- 42:41Speaker 2: at one of our sister stations here in the building. SuperstarCountry961KWS. Man,
- 42:46Speaker 2: I appreciate you being here. Welcome back, buddy. Thanks for
- 42:48Speaker 2: having me, mate. All right. That's the longest 10 questions
- 42:52Speaker 2: I think we have ever had.
- 42:53Speaker 12: I'm sorry.
- 42:54Speaker 2: Why don't you give these to the people the day
- 42:56Speaker 2: before so we can think about it? Because it defeats
- 42:58Speaker 2: the whole purpose. I'm not in my 30s. I don't
- 43:01Speaker 2: think that quickly. You did fine. You did fine. The

- 47:00Speaker 2: talked to him on the phone yesterday and he was
- 47:02Speaker 2: on his way to Charleston yesterday. I know he's going
- 47:04Speaker 2: to head over to Putnam County as well. We'll talk
- 47:05Speaker 2: to him coming up on the show tomorrow. tomorrow. I
- 47:09Speaker 2: invite you to join me every Friday morning, 9.06, for
- 47:11Speaker 2: the Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week from the
- 47:13Speaker 2: Canala Charleston Humane Association, brought to you by Almost Heaven Interiors, family-owned,
- 47:17Speaker 2: proudly serving the community for over 50 years. They specialize
- 47:19Speaker 2: in custom blinds, shades, shutters, upholstery, and beautifully crafted sewn goods,
- 47:24Speaker 2: homes to hospitals, classrooms to commercial spaces. They do it all.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Check them out. 516 D Street in South Charleston. Had
- 47:30Speaker 2: a lot of people reach out to me about this
- 47:34Speaker 2: lady who was on Wheel of Fortune last night. Now,
- 47:36Speaker 2: she did pretty well for herself, won a lot of
- 47:38Speaker 2: money and a trip to Thailand. Her name is Autumn Martin,
- 47:43Speaker 2: and she's in the Kanawha Valley area now, but she
- 47:46Speaker 2: is originally from Logan. And what I'm going to say
- 47:50Speaker 2: is probably going to shock you. I don't know her.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Believe it or not, not everyone from Logan knows everybody else.
- 47:57Speaker 2: We kind of know, apparently, about a lot of the
- 47:59Speaker 2: same people because I had a good friend of mine
- 48:02Speaker 2: who texted me and said, hey, you've got to have
- 48:04Speaker 2: Autumn on the air to talk about her experience at
- 48:06Speaker 2: Wheel of Fortune. She said she did pretty well for
- 48:07Speaker 2: herself last night. I did not know her. I reached
- 48:10Speaker 2: out to her. You know, that totally destroys that rumor
- 48:13Speaker 2: that everybody in a small town knows each other because
- 48:15Speaker 2: we knew a lot of the same people, but I
- 48:16Speaker 2: reached out to her. And just as I was getting
- 48:20Speaker 2: ready to go on the air today, I heard back
- 48:23Speaker 2: from her and said that all media inquiries have to
- 48:26Speaker 2: go through Sony Pictures Television. So that's not her fault.
- 48:31Speaker 2: I mean, that's just the way it happens because any
- 48:33Speaker 2: time I remember when we went through all this with Landau,
- 48:36Speaker 2: When you want America's Got Talent, you can't just when
- 48:37Speaker 2: people have been on shows like that, there's a little
- 48:40Speaker 2: there's a little, you know, kind of a gap there.
- 48:42Speaker 2: You can't just go on and interview them. You got
- 48:44Speaker 2: to go through the proper channels. So I when I
- 48:47Speaker 2: get off the air, we put it on an email
- 48:49Speaker 2: to Hollywood to see if we can get Autumn on
- 48:51Speaker 2: the show sometime over the next couple of days. Speaking
- 48:53Speaker 2: of the next couple of days, I will not be
- 48:55Speaker 2: here on the show Thursday or Friday. Just letting you
- 48:57Speaker 2: know now. taking a quick vacation, just my wife and
- 49:01Speaker 2: I heading out of town for a couple days. I will,
- 49:04Speaker 2: tomorrow I'll be on the show and on midday, not
- 49:07Speaker 2: on either show Thursday, not on either show Friday. Dale
- 49:09Speaker 2: Cooper will be filling in for me. I will be
- 49:12Speaker 2: back though on Monday. Putnam County Commission meeting this afternoon
- 49:17Speaker 2: at five o'clock. The topic of the Buffalo Google Data
- 49:21Speaker 2: Center is expected to be on the agenda. Expecting a
- 49:24Speaker 2: pack house there tonight. Of course, our news department will
- 49:27Speaker 2: be covering that story posted this morning. WV Metro News
- 49:31Speaker 2: dot com House Democrats had another kitchen table event last
- 49:34Speaker 2: night away from the kitchen. This one at City Center

- 49:50Speaker 2: night in Boone County. It's going to be one in

- 50:06Speaker 2: special thank you to everyone who joined us at Capital
- 50:09Speaker 2: Market late yesterday afternoon for our classic TV stars gathering.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Kathy Garver from Family Affair, Julie McCullough from Growing Pains,
- 50:16Speaker 2: who I did not know was from Wyoming County. I
- 50:20Speaker 2: had no idea. I mean, I literally did not know
- 50:23Speaker 2: that she was a West Virginia person. She's from Wyoming County. She,
- 50:26Speaker 2: of course, played Mike Seaver's girlfriend on Growing Pains. She
- 50:31Speaker 2: also was in the show Sharknado. Um, so yeah, Wyoming
- 50:36Speaker 2: County did not, did not know that. Uh, but, and also, uh, Mrs. Gilligan, Dreamer, Denver, uh,
- 50:41Speaker 2: big shout out to everyone at Capital Market for hosting this.
- 50:44Speaker 2: It was a great event. We got plenty of pictures posted,
- 50:46Speaker 2: WCHS Network, uh, on the Facebook page and also, uh, on, uh, my,
- 50:51Speaker 2: my page, Dave Allen Radio. So go be sure and
- 50:53Speaker 2: check that out. I had to explain though, to a lot,
- 50:56Speaker 2: a couple of the younger members of our staff, what
- 51:00Speaker 2: life was like when you only had three or four channels.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Because there were two members of the staff, I will
- 51:05Speaker 2: not name them by name, but two members of the
- 51:07Speaker 2: staff said that they had never heard of either show.
- 51:09Speaker 2: And that's okay because time marches on and a lot
- 51:12Speaker 2: of new shows, I don't have any clue. But literally,
- 51:15Speaker 2: you grew up like I did in the 70s and 80s.
- 51:17Speaker 2: I mean, early part of my childhood, we literally got
- 51:20Speaker 2: three or four channels. I think they increased it to
- 51:22Speaker 2: like six. And none of them were on the computer.
- 51:24Speaker 2: None of them were on the phone. They were actually
- 51:26Speaker 2: on a TV station. the size of an outbuilding that
- 51:30Speaker 2: weighed 8,000 pounds in the living room. But it was
- 51:34Speaker 2: a great event. I appreciate everybody for coming out. Festival
