- 0:06Speaker 1: Well, hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo territory.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I'm Mike dgi Giovanna, joined by my regular co host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Trumbo, and as you can see, we have a
- 0:15Speaker 1: very special guest with us today, Tory Hunter, former Angels outfielder,
- 0:21Speaker 1: current special assistant to the Angels General manager. Tory Welcome
- 0:26Speaker 1: to the show. How are you doing on this morning
- 0:28Speaker 1: of the Angels home opener tonight?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Well, first of all, thank you guys for having me.
- 0:34Speaker 2: It's great to be with my old teammate, Mark Trumbo.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Mike d.
- 0:37Speaker 2: G Ivanni, Man, you've always reported the news correctly.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Appreciate it. Well, I appreciate it that. Thank God for
- 0:46Speaker 3: having me on the show.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah, this morning I woke up ready to go open
- 0:52Speaker 2: a day. I'm talking to you guys starting off, and
- 0:55Speaker 2: then we go to Angel Stadium and take care of
- 0:58Speaker 2: business there hopefully all right.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Well, Tori, you were nine time Gold Glove winner, nicknamed
- 1:03Speaker 1: spider Man for your ability to scale walls and take
- 1:06Speaker 1: home run balls back. I'm gonna put you on the
- 1:08Speaker 1: spot right at the top here. What were your top
- 1:10Speaker 1: three catches of your career?
- 1:14Speaker 3: Man?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Top three, I would definitely have to put just the
- 1:19Speaker 2: moment of the All Star Game in two thousand and two.
- 1:21Speaker 3: The guy that's hitting the ball is Barry Bonds, and
- 1:25Speaker 3: this is my first All Star Game.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I'm twenty five years old, and to be able to
- 1:31Speaker 2: take away a home run on a big stage like
- 1:33Speaker 2: that from one of the greatest hitters that ever played
- 1:36Speaker 2: the game, if not the best hitter they have played
- 1:38Speaker 2: the game.
- 1:39Speaker 3: For me, a twenty five year old.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Kid from Pombla, Farkansas, to take a home run away
- 1:43Speaker 2: from Barry Bonds, definitely probably my number one. Probably not
- 1:48Speaker 2: my best catch, but it was my greatest moment. And
- 1:52Speaker 2: I was a Corlos League with the White Sox. Hit
- 1:55Speaker 2: a ball in the Metro Dome and I jumped over
- 1:58Speaker 2: that baggie fence out there at center field and stretched
- 2:01Speaker 2: out and caught the ball. The next day, I was
- 2:03Speaker 2: so sore, I felt like I couldn't play, but you know,
- 2:06Speaker 2: trump bla, I don't come out of the game. And
- 2:10Speaker 2: and then number three, I would say with the Angels
- 2:14Speaker 2: on Mother's Day, I made a catch on Mother's Day
- 2:18Speaker 2: against the Royals, and I was able to catch that ball,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and I was so pumped up and so hyped that
- 2:23Speaker 2: I almost passed out.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Well.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Of course there was some great catches, and then there
- 2:30Speaker 1: was always the one that got away. Game two of
- 2:33Speaker 1: the twenty thirteen alc Yes, you're playing right field for
- 2:37Speaker 1: the Detroit Tigers. You're in Fenway Park, Detroit, as a
- 2:40Speaker 1: five to one lead in the eighth inning, You're about
- 2:42Speaker 1: to go up two games to none on the Red Sox,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and upsteps Big Poppy. David Ortiz take us through that sequence.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Too, man. You know what's crazy is a story behind that.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Ortez and I went to Capitol Grille to night before
- 2:57Speaker 2: and just we sitting up talking. We're sitting up popping
- 3:01Speaker 2: and uh he says, hey, I got jaque Ben WASH's pitches.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, snap, right. So I went back to
- 3:09Speaker 2: the stadium the next day. The day of that game.
- 3:12Speaker 2: It was like, then, why you got to you gotta
- 3:14Speaker 2: change it up on Big Poppy. He said, he has
- 3:17Speaker 2: your pitches. And then while I was like, man, I
- 3:19Speaker 2: forget that I always get him out, I'm like, oh
- 3:21Speaker 2: my god. So now Sirseley comes out of the game
- 3:26Speaker 2: and the eighth inning and it just struck out the side.
- 3:29Speaker 2: We thought he was gonna go back out there, but
- 3:32Speaker 2: I saw Ben Waugh running running to the mail. When
- 3:34Speaker 2: I went back out there in the night, and all
- 3:37Speaker 2: of a sudden, I'm thinking, like, I hope he doesn't
- 3:40Speaker 2: throw a change him because he knows it. It was
- 3:42Speaker 2: an eighty eight mile hour change up and Dave Ortiez
- 3:44Speaker 2: hit the ball.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I'm like, oh my.
- 3:46Speaker 2: God, I'm running after this ball, swearing kissed off. I'm like,
- 3:51Speaker 2: I can't believe this guy through this pitch. So it's
- 3:54Speaker 2: now it's hit and it's in the lights, and I
- 3:57Speaker 2: felt the wall and I'm like, forget this. It's the Alcs.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I've never been to the World Series. That's in my life.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I'm half a down this bild today. I knew I
- 4:06Speaker 2: was gonna die, but I came back to life after
- 4:09Speaker 2: I got older, when I woke up on the other side,
- 4:11Speaker 2: I came back to life.
- 4:12Speaker 3: So and then the cop, you know, he was right there.
- 4:14Speaker 2: He was supposed to be protecting his servant, but but no,
- 4:19Speaker 2: he was so far away. Man, he had no shot
- 4:21Speaker 2: to help with me. So, uh, it was just a
- 4:24Speaker 2: It was a great effort, great moment for the Red Sox,
- 4:27Speaker 2: great moment for Big Poppy, one of my one of
- 4:29Speaker 2: my best friends in the game. Uh, but that's that's
- 4:32Speaker 2: all our effort. And I was thirty eight years old.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Does that play still kind of keep you up at
- 4:38Speaker 1: night or show up in your dreams?
- 4:40Speaker 3: Uh? No, that play doesn't show up in my dreams
- 4:44Speaker 3: at all. That pitch does.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Oh yeah, because uh artis struck out three times a game.
- 4:51Speaker 3: He didn't hit the ball at all.
- 4:53Speaker 2: And then he stepped up right there, and and the
- 4:55Speaker 2: night before he told me that's all I can remember.
- 4:58Speaker 2: This guy had his pitches and and trust me, first
- 5:01Speaker 2: pitch eighty eight mile. Now he throws ninety eight. Yeah,
- 5:04Speaker 2: So how you sit on that on the first pitch?
- 5:07Speaker 3: Am I? Right? Trum hole?
- 5:09Speaker 4: Well you don't, you don't. And now tee, you see
- 5:12Speaker 4: what I have to deal with. I mean, you caught,
- 5:13Speaker 4: you call almost fifty five hundred balls in your career.
- 5:17Speaker 4: That's fourteenth in history. And this man wants to talk
- 5:20Speaker 4: about the one you didn't catch, right, Well, I didn't
- 5:25Speaker 4: tell you earlier.
- 5:26Speaker 1: How how iconic was this photo? The two v's the
- 5:30Speaker 1: cop And unfortunately jump down to did you did you
- 5:36Speaker 1: ever talk to that cop or autograph a picture for him?
- 5:39Speaker 1: Did you ever got you two ever hook up? After
- 5:41Speaker 1: that crazy photo?
- 5:43Speaker 2: I know him before that, Oh really the spoken worst
- 5:46Speaker 2: of it. Oh yeah, he's a great guy. He had
- 5:49Speaker 2: no shot. I cracked a joke afterwards, and I said, man,
- 5:53Speaker 2: he's supposed to be protecting and server. I think people
- 5:55Speaker 2: got kind of serious. I'm like, I was joking. He's
- 5:57Speaker 2: like twenty yards away from the wall.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Help me. I was already dead.
- 6:04Speaker 4: All right, Well, one of the one of the rare
- 6:06Speaker 4: great guys in uh Boston, at least when you're on
- 6:09Speaker 4: the visiting team.
- 6:10Speaker 5: But uh, all right, all right, I got a question.
- 6:12Speaker 5: I got a question.
- 6:13Speaker 4: It's a little more serious current, but can you can
- 6:16Speaker 4: you kind of take us.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Through what your day to day role looks like.
- 6:19Speaker 4: With the Angels right now as a special assistant to
- 6:22Speaker 4: a GM Perrymnasium.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Uh well, I mean I'm there. I'm like a shall
- 6:28Speaker 3: lamb monk.
- 6:30Speaker 2: And you you you you walk in the clubhouse, you
- 6:33Speaker 2: get there when they're there, and and I just I
- 6:38Speaker 2: try to be present. You know, you got guys that
- 6:41Speaker 2: have things going on off the field. You got guys
- 6:43Speaker 2: they have things with with finance, with relationships with their family,
- 6:47Speaker 2: but also with in baseball. They give it, I give
- 6:50Speaker 2: them a different perspective on on different things and and uh,
- 6:54Speaker 2: how to hit, you know, running a basis preparing themselves.
- 6:58Speaker 2: So I just try to be available for all the
- 7:00Speaker 2: guys and then if Perry needs an extra eye on
- 7:05Speaker 2: evaluate something or someone. I actually I'm there for them.
- 7:09Speaker 2: They ask questions, but I try to be available when
- 7:12Speaker 2: I'm here and be at the stadium as much as
- 7:14Speaker 2: I can so they can see me and be and
- 7:16Speaker 2: be present for those guys.
- 7:19Speaker 4: I mean, that's invaluable. I think that you know, I've
- 7:23Speaker 4: kind of wondered too, what is that you know, special assistant?
- 7:26Speaker 4: You see that title and it's not always totally clear,
- 7:28Speaker 4: but it sounds like you're doing it all, which is
- 7:31Speaker 4: cool and really helpful for these guys. One question that
- 7:35Speaker 4: you know, I've been out of the game for five
- 7:38Speaker 4: or six years now. Things have changed a lot. Can
- 7:41Speaker 4: you talk about like what the day to day work
- 7:43Speaker 4: looks like that the guys are doing compared to you know,
- 7:46Speaker 4: maybe when you played. I don't see as many guys
- 7:49Speaker 4: out there hitting batting practice. Some teams rarely do it apparently,
- 7:53Speaker 4: and I'm wondering when when guys are working on their
- 7:55Speaker 4: defense and other things. I mean, I know what we
- 7:58Speaker 4: were used to, but it seems different to me now,
- 8:01Speaker 4: is it is that true?
- 8:03Speaker 3: Uh? I feel like it was.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I think this year with Kurt Suzuki coming in, Uh,
- 8:10Speaker 2: they really tried to put more emphasis on defense.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Uh.
- 8:14Speaker 2: The guys are out with Brady Anderson as the hitting coast. Now,
- 8:18Speaker 2: you know he's gonna have him out there early hitting.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I saw trout. You know, he's there at eight in
- 8:22Speaker 2: the morning on the field hitting you know, extra and
- 8:24Speaker 2: some guys will go out with him so he can
- 8:26Speaker 2: catch it, get a break and uh.
- 8:28Speaker 3: And the results is shown.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Uh in this early part of the season and in
- 8:33Speaker 2: spring training he was actually hitting the ball, going back
- 8:35Speaker 2: to hitting line drives and and getting his fist to hit. H.
- 8:39Speaker 3: I think he stopped.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Hitting off the machine and and uh and started going
- 8:43Speaker 2: with live arm and uh and and and we definitely
- 8:46Speaker 2: see some results.
- 8:47Speaker 3: So Uh, these guys do work.
- 8:49Speaker 2: You know, they still have a lot of injuries in
- 8:52Speaker 2: Major League Baseball.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Uh.
- 8:54Speaker 2: And and you got all this technology. You guys got
- 8:56Speaker 2: workout programs, nutritionists, besides therapists.
- 9:00Speaker 3: They got everything they need. But at the same time,
- 9:02Speaker 3: they got more injuries.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And so I don't understand that, but I think it's
- 9:07Speaker 2: they get a lot of days off, they don't have
- 9:09Speaker 2: the like when you're working out, you bench pressed two
- 9:13Speaker 2: hundred pounds, but if you do it enough and then
- 9:15Speaker 2: you max out, then you can bench press two twenty.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Then you can bench spress to forty.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I think these guys got to push themselves to play
- 9:22Speaker 2: every day as much as they can if you have
- 9:23Speaker 2: an opportunity, and then that actually your mind will overtake
- 9:28Speaker 2: the body and say, hey, you got to go out
- 9:30Speaker 2: and perform, and it heels itself.
- 9:32Speaker 3: So if you keep you know, baby, and.
- 9:35Speaker 2: A lot of these guys giving them days off because
- 9:37Speaker 2: they don't feel right or whatever it may be, and
- 9:40Speaker 2: they don't know how to push through those walls and uh,
- 9:43Speaker 2: and then you.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Get a lot of injuries that way.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Mike Trout back in center field this year after toying
- 9:49Speaker 1: with right field for a little bit. You played center
- 9:51Speaker 1: field most of your pretty much all of your career.
- 9:54Speaker 1: In a late career switch to right field, what is it?
- 10:00Speaker 3: You know?
- 10:01Speaker 1: Trout's talked about people have talked about this being easier
- 10:04Speaker 1: on your body moving the right field, but is it
- 10:07Speaker 1: really easy on your body? Is there any big difference?
- 10:12Speaker 2: Well, it's less running, especially if the dead guide is
- 10:15Speaker 2: on the first base.
- 10:17Speaker 3: You shoult you have the fright all the way across
- 10:19Speaker 3: the field.
- 10:19Speaker 2: But you know what, there are some quick bursts in
- 10:24Speaker 2: right field, some balls have a little seak, some got
- 10:27Speaker 2: some balls have a cut and you really have to
- 10:30Speaker 2: really get after it for about five to ten steps.
- 10:34Speaker 3: In center field, you go after and you can stay
- 10:36Speaker 3: as smooth as possible.
- 10:38Speaker 2: And that's what I think Trout is talking about playing
- 10:40Speaker 2: center field. Actually, it's less on your body because you're
- 10:44Speaker 2: able to glide to the ball and uh and without
- 10:47Speaker 2: that quick burst and uh with with Trout having leg
- 10:51Speaker 2: injuries and to his lower body, I definitely think that
- 10:54Speaker 2: center field and you know what, mentally him playing center
- 10:58Speaker 2: field and be able to be that kid again.
- 11:00Speaker 3: I mean he's thirty four years old, I.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Think yeah, and uh, just to be in center field
- 11:05Speaker 2: and be that kid again.
- 11:06Speaker 3: He still can run, he still can go after the ball. Uh.
- 11:09Speaker 2: It actually probably would help him in his total game.
- 11:13Speaker 2: So allow him to go and be that kid again
- 11:15Speaker 2: and be the Trout that his mind tells him to be.
- 11:18Speaker 3: He then his body will follow. Yeah.
- 11:21Speaker 4: I think there's a lot of backing up bases and
- 11:24Speaker 4: things in the corners too, that that people don't always
- 11:27Speaker 4: account for you know, right field. You're counted on to
- 11:30Speaker 4: bust it, you know, all the players to first base.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Whether everybody does that, you know, you can judge for yourself.
- 11:37Speaker 4: But uh, you know, I yeah, played a lot of
- 11:41Speaker 4: right field. Couldn't hold your duck, but uh, you know
- 11:46Speaker 4: I would I like to. Uh, but you know I
- 11:49Speaker 4: never had the speed remote you know. Part of this
- 11:51Speaker 4: is is you have to have the speed center field.
- 11:53Speaker 3: You were fast, Yeah, you were really, That's what I'll
- 11:57Speaker 3: tell my daughter. But you get down the line. You
- 12:00Speaker 3: were my teammate for two years, so.
- 12:02Speaker 4: I know maybe, well I appreciate that, even if you're
- 12:06Speaker 4: being nice, okay, so truthful. Well, thank you very much.
- 12:11Speaker 4: I know it means a lot. Another thing that means
- 12:15Speaker 4: a lot, I think probably to you. Joe Adell credited
- 12:18Speaker 4: you with really helping him out, improving his approach at
- 12:22Speaker 4: the plate, improving his defense, especially in right field. I
- 12:26Speaker 4: mean I watched well now I watch every game, and
- 12:29Speaker 4: he made some tremendous strides and it really seems like
- 12:32Speaker 4: it came outter the work you guys did. And I
- 12:36Speaker 4: know from you know, doing some coaching and hitting, especially
- 12:39Speaker 4: with hitters. Last few years when you're not playing, kind
- 12:41Speaker 4: of the next best thing is getting credit, you know,
- 12:44Speaker 4: and it's not the credit, but you know, somebody's showing
- 12:46Speaker 4: appreciation for the work you put into help them. And
- 12:49Speaker 4: that was really neat to see. Maybe if you if
- 12:52Speaker 4: did anything click with Joe that you can talk about,
- 12:55Speaker 4: was it more mental?
- 12:55Speaker 3: Maybe? Yeah, I definitely think it was more mental. I
- 13:00Speaker 3: think he's maturing.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Uh, He's he's listening to more wisdom and uh, and
- 13:06Speaker 2: he's able to separate, you know, what works for him
- 13:09Speaker 2: and what doesn't work for him, so you can give
- 13:10Speaker 2: him a lot of options and whatever doesn't work, he's
- 13:13Speaker 2: he's mature enough to throw it out the window and
- 13:16Speaker 2: and keep the things that does. And I think that's uh,
- 13:20Speaker 2: just maturation over time. He's uh, he's starting to gather
- 13:24Speaker 2: the right information. He's starting to shoot the ball the
- 13:26Speaker 2: other way a little more, uh, so he could cover
- 13:29Speaker 2: the whole field. This guy has tremendous a tremendous amount
- 13:32Speaker 2: of pop, you know, maybe the highest exit velocity on
- 13:36Speaker 2: the team, uh, majority of the time. And uh and
- 13:39Speaker 2: the ball that flies out to right center field, he has.
- 13:42Speaker 3: More power than most people.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I know, maybe not you, Trumbo, but this guy has
- 13:46Speaker 2: some thump and right.
- 13:48Speaker 6: He's got he's got some and uh and defensively, you know,
- 13:53Speaker 6: the last two or three years we're in the outfield,
- 13:56Speaker 6: all he wants to do is get better defensively, hitting, hitting,
- 14:00Speaker 6: And it's like it has its ebbs and flows.
- 14:02Speaker 3: It's up and down, and defense should never slump.
- 14:05Speaker 2: And I told him, you want to play a long
- 14:06Speaker 2: time play defense because if he can be relied upon
- 14:09Speaker 2: on defense. When you're struggling at the plate and you're
- 14:12Speaker 2: not good at defense, then.
- 14:14Speaker 3: You're not good at all of the team. But when you.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Struggling at the plate and you actually saved rids on defense,
- 14:20Speaker 2: you actually can keep yourself in the game. And sometimes
- 14:23Speaker 2: making good plays on defense can carry over to your offense. So, uh,
- 14:27Speaker 2: he wants to get better defensively, and you can see
- 14:30Speaker 2: the improvement in the last two or three years.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Joe ahead.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Sorry, Mike, Uh, you don't get enough credit for your
- 14:40Speaker 4: throwing arm. I think you know, everyone talks about your
- 14:43Speaker 4: you know, the the acrobatic plays, the you know, Robin
- 14:46Speaker 4: home runs, But I mean you have literally the most
- 14:51Speaker 4: accurate throwing arm that I played. I mean I played
- 14:53Speaker 4: first base, so part of the time you're counted on
- 14:56Speaker 4: to cutballs that have you know, side spend, not online.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Sometimes you're gonna cut them if the runner might be
- 15:02Speaker 4: safe at home and the batter runner is going to
- 15:05Speaker 4: just run into that silly out. But with you, I mean,
- 15:07Speaker 4: I don't think I cut I can't remember cutting anything.
- 15:10Speaker 4: They were always right on the money, perfect one hop
- 15:13Speaker 4: never overthrew the cutoff man either, which really speaks to
- 15:17Speaker 4: like fundamentally sound baseball. And you know, it pains me
- 15:21Speaker 4: to see these outfielders throw these, you know, grenades, and
- 15:25Speaker 4: I'm not saying the angel players, but around the league,
- 15:27Speaker 4: it just like, and that's been as an outfielder that
- 15:30Speaker 4: is in your control, but you were I just wanted
- 15:32Speaker 4: to point that out that you're throwing arm just doesn't
- 15:34Speaker 4: get enough credit because strong and accurate.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I'm probably the one of the last guys that actually
- 15:41Speaker 2: took infield at six fifteen before the game started, you know,
- 15:45Speaker 2: And they kind of took that out of baseball. So
- 15:48Speaker 2: we had to throw with Tom Kelly with the Twins.
- 15:51Speaker 2: If you missed the cutoff man, he would take you
- 15:53Speaker 2: all field in front of all the people and say
- 15:56Speaker 2: get off the field.
- 15:57Speaker 3: You're not ready, right, so we always to take that feeling.
- 16:01Speaker 2: It was a serious thing, and so we have to
- 16:04Speaker 2: be fundamentally sound. With the Twins, Kirby Puckett was one
- 16:07Speaker 2: of the guys say, I need you to be accurate.
- 16:09Speaker 2: You got a strong arm, but be more accurate. And
- 16:11Speaker 2: my only way you can be more accurate is one
- 16:13Speaker 2: hop the base. So I learned to throw hard and
- 16:17Speaker 2: one hop the base, which keeps it accurate. So when
- 16:20Speaker 2: the ball bounce it it only bounces a small disbursement
- 16:24Speaker 2: and you can make the player, you know me, trying
- 16:26Speaker 2: to throw the ball all the way to the bass.
- 16:29Speaker 2: It's one hundred and ten percent, which doesn't exist. And
- 16:32Speaker 2: actually you're throwing it. You're off, but your arm looks good.
- 16:35Speaker 2: It's for show, but you you're not getting any dope.
- 16:38Speaker 2: You're not getting making any money. So if you're not
- 16:40Speaker 2: throwing anybody out because they have to reach up and
- 16:42Speaker 2: come back down, that's too much time for them to
- 16:44Speaker 2: be safe.
- 16:45Speaker 3: So one thing I teach when I'm in the.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Outfield with the guys the last three years with the
- 16:50Speaker 2: Angels is hey, one hop the base and not try
- 16:53Speaker 2: to throw the ball all the way. So we're doing
- 16:55Speaker 2: that from the minor leagues all the way to the
- 16:57Speaker 2: major leagues.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Be more accurate.
- 16:58Speaker 2: You're you'll be more accurate if you can just one
- 17:00Speaker 2: hop that base with with your strength.
- 17:03Speaker 1: One follow up on Joe Tory. You know he has
- 17:08Speaker 1: struggled at bit moving to center field, and he's a
- 17:11Speaker 1: lot better for right Fielder's a guy he's played both,
- 17:13Speaker 1: so well, how would you sort of coach this guy
- 17:16Speaker 1: up right now and when he has to go up,
- 17:18Speaker 1: you know, shift over to center field.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Joe's a big guy, ju You know, people don't understand.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Joe's about six', three you, know and and he's, jacked
- 17:29Speaker 2: and AND i think he's just a big body. Kid
- 17:34Speaker 2: center field is a place where if you need to
- 17:37Speaker 2: Give trout a.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Rest you can put him in center. Field he can
- 17:39Speaker 3: hold it.
- 17:40Speaker 2: DOWN i don't think he's a true center, fielder BUT
- 17:43Speaker 2: i think he can hold it down Right.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Phield it just seemed like that's a better.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Fit his arm is strong enough to throw guys, Out
- 17:50Speaker 2: he's able to get to the.
- 17:51Speaker 3: BALL i think he's more comfortable in right.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Field and sometimes where guy's, comfortable you got to allow
- 17:56Speaker 2: him to play over.
- 17:57Speaker 3: There he's not hurting the team playing at right.
- 17:59Speaker 2: FIELD i would even try to stick them in center
- 18:01Speaker 2: field for as a mainstay at.
- 18:03Speaker 1: All switching gears a little. Bit you interviewed for the
- 18:07Speaker 1: man managerial job with The angels last. Fall how do
- 18:11Speaker 1: you feel about that, process how it played out and
- 18:15Speaker 1: the outcome and are you still interested in becoming a
- 18:18Speaker 1: major league?
- 18:18Speaker 3: Manager? Uh, WELL.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I really enjoyed the process the last two years with
- 18:27Speaker 2: With perry And, uh we sat, down we had great.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Conversations some of the things that you, KNOW i would,
- 18:33Speaker 2: do some of the THINGS i wouldn't, change some of
- 18:36Speaker 2: the PEOPLE i would, change some of.
- 18:37Speaker 3: The GUYS i will, keep you. Know AND i gave
- 18:39Speaker 3: my my honest.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Opinion and uh and and we we we had great.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Conversation it's just you, know it didn't work out and
- 18:47Speaker 2: uh for some. Reason and and, Uh i'm not sad about.
- 18:51Speaker 2: IT i stayed in the. ORGANIZATION i love the. Organization
- 18:54Speaker 2: it's something THAT i really want to, do is uh
- 18:57Speaker 2: be a part of. It and uh and when the
- 18:59Speaker 2: opportunity became presented itself to be a, manager possible, manager you,
- 19:04Speaker 2: KNOW i, said you know, what If i'm gonna do,
- 19:06Speaker 2: Anything i'll. MANAGE i don't know IF i want to
- 19:09Speaker 2: coach full. Time but IF i can manage and create
- 19:12Speaker 2: the team that THAT i can, see you, know AND
- 19:15Speaker 2: i can see that wins and give them the fundamentals
- 19:18Speaker 2: that they need to go perform on a day to day.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Basis Like Mark, trumbull the it's the small.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Things even in business right, now it's the small things
- 19:27Speaker 2: in the business, service you, Know, uh the customer experience
- 19:31Speaker 2: and all these different, things those small things that people
- 19:34Speaker 2: forget about because they're looking at the big. Thing the you,
- 19:37Speaker 2: KNOW i definitely think that's what keep customers coming. Back in,
- 19:42Speaker 2: baseball if you fundamentally, sound you can fill the, ball
- 19:44Speaker 2: turn the double, plays throw the guys, out be more
- 19:47Speaker 2: accurate at the, plate have good two strike, approach battle
- 19:51Speaker 2: what the, Plate, uh try to do less to get.
- 19:54Speaker 3: More you do all these little.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Things that's what actually wins game because when you get
- 19:58Speaker 2: to the, playoffs that's what. Matters during the, season if
- 20:01Speaker 2: you're hitting bombs and you're doing all those, things it
- 20:03Speaker 2: doesn't matter because you're gonna face a one to two
- 20:05Speaker 2: and the three. Starter if you don't have if you're
- 20:07Speaker 2: not fundamentally, sound you're not gonna.
- 20:09Speaker 3: WIN i don't care what you.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Say SO i think if you teach that droughout the,
- 20:15Speaker 2: SEASON i think that. Works and that's something THAT i
- 20:17Speaker 2: wanted to bring to The, angels bring back to The
- 20:20Speaker 2: angels BECAUSE i GOT i think we got to a
- 20:22Speaker 2: point four or five years ago where we had launch
- 20:25Speaker 2: angle guys swinging for the. Fence you, know defense was.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Terrible i'm telling you, now five years AGO i could
- 20:31Speaker 2: not stand watching The. Angels, wow now they actually get.
- 20:38Speaker 2: There they're actually getting. There they turned the. Corner no
- 20:41Speaker 2: one really talks about that stuff. Anymore we talk, About,
- 20:44Speaker 2: hey the small, things play the.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Games the.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Controllables that's What kirchuzuki always talks, about the controllable control
- 20:51Speaker 2: of the things that you could control and throw out
- 20:53Speaker 2: the other things that you.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Can't you do have a lot of business interest In,
- 20:57Speaker 1: texas but if another opportunity to interview for manager's job comes,
- 21:01Speaker 1: up you're going to pursue.
- 21:02Speaker 3: IT i don't, KNOW i don't. KNOW i really love
- 21:06Speaker 3: What i'm doing right.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Now, uh that opportunity came and to try to take
- 21:12Speaker 2: advantage of. It it even came up with the twins as,
- 21:14Speaker 2: well and, uh and and that didn't work out as.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Well but AND i understand that you know you have a.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Catcher catchers they seem to be uh more of a manager.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Manager But i'm a baseball. GUY i got a PhD
- 21:28Speaker 2: in this. Game trumpo got a PhD in this. GAME
- 21:30Speaker 2: i know how to play this, game AND i know
- 21:32Speaker 2: THAT i need a short stop the second base of
- 21:34Speaker 2: the third. BASEMENT i need everybody around. Me you build
- 21:36Speaker 2: a team around. You that's what they. DO a pitcher,
- 21:40Speaker 2: coach a bitch, coach a formal manager to help you
- 21:43Speaker 2: go through the. Process IF i build a team around,
- 21:45Speaker 2: me doesn't matter what what you throw at, ME i.
- 21:48Speaker 2: GOT i got a great team and a team THAT
- 21:50Speaker 2: i trust uh as as my. Staff so THAT'S i
- 21:55Speaker 2: think a lot of guys can be, managers you. Know
- 21:57Speaker 2: BUT i think it's just.
- 21:58Speaker 3: A notion that people think that catches are. BETTER i don't.
- 22:01Speaker 4: Know, no you're right about.
- 22:04Speaker 5: That they got.
- 22:05Speaker 4: It it's like a built in you, know this guy's
- 22:07Speaker 4: got you, know got the got the goods or.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Something i've interviewed.
- 22:11Speaker 4: For a couple things, too more on the hitting, side
- 22:14Speaker 4: but you know it didn't get. Them you don't know,
- 22:16Speaker 4: Why like you, know you come away and who knows
- 22:20Speaker 4: what what somebody is looking for So, dji thanks for
- 22:23Speaker 4: the Hot tomali questions there that was?
- 22:26Speaker 3: Hot that was so? Hot?
- 22:27Speaker 4: Yeah, okay all, right all, RIGHT i gotta.
- 22:33Speaker 3: EVERYTHING i just said was. Great now you acting the hot.
- 22:37Speaker 1: QUICK i always love WHEN i asked you a question
- 22:41Speaker 1: and you, say that's a Hot. Tomali that's whom you.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Know is a good. Question all?
- 22:47Speaker 5: Right not so not so Hot? Tomali not so?
- 22:49Speaker 3: Hot here we. Go uh.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Yeah So i'm watching the other Day Matt. Chapman he
- 22:53Speaker 4: has some direct words for his first, Baseman Casey. SCHMID
- 22:57Speaker 4: i don't know if you saw it or, not but
- 22:59Speaker 4: it's a pretty direct. Feedback he felt like the play
- 23:01Speaker 4: should have been. Made in, ADDITION i also read a
- 23:04Speaker 4: pretty cool article the other day on The dodgers Where
- 23:06Speaker 4: Dave roberts was talking how important it was to Get
- 23:09Speaker 4: Clayton cursaw's buy in early, on at least as the team.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Leader Kurse aby and you, Know i'm unequivocal leader of The,
- 23:17Speaker 4: dodgers and if he bought, in the other guys would buy.
- 23:19Speaker 4: In so you've talked About Kirby puckett being a big
- 23:22Speaker 4: mentor to you and, showcasing you, know his, leadership AND
- 23:27Speaker 4: i didn't know, Him SO i don't know if you
- 23:29Speaker 4: know WHAT i saw from you was you, know close
- 23:32Speaker 4: to what he did or, not but you you were
- 23:34Speaker 4: one of a. Kind you know you're not going to
- 23:36Speaker 4: be able to replicate that as far as, LEADERSHIP i,
- 23:38Speaker 4: mean hundreds of guys have benefited from having you on their.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Team and you, Know i've never seen anybody as good
- 23:46Speaker 4: as it then. You BUT i guess my question is
- 23:49Speaker 4: in this in this current, game THE a word analytics
- 23:53Speaker 4: and and a lot of teams going. YOUNGER i, mean
- 23:56Speaker 4: guys are getting big deals that are in DOUBLE a right.
- 23:59Speaker 4: Now it seems to be a. THING i, mean is
- 24:02Speaker 4: leadership as important as it's always been in the. GAME
- 24:06Speaker 4: i think it. IS i see playoff teams they have
- 24:08Speaker 4: a pretty clear leader usually if.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Not more than.
- 24:11Speaker 5: One and what do you what are your thoughts on.
- 24:13Speaker 3: THAT i definitely think that you have to have wisdom
- 24:17Speaker 3: on your.
- 24:18Speaker 2: SQUAD i, mean every business, model EVERY uh team that
- 24:22Speaker 2: you know about that that is one or or gone
- 24:25Speaker 2: to the next, level they've always had wisdom amongst them
- 24:29Speaker 2: AND uh AND i think just having a great you
- 24:31Speaker 2: just can't have the wisdom without the talent as. Well
- 24:34Speaker 2: so you got to have some talent with your. Wisdom
- 24:37Speaker 2: so you got to prove that you can go out
- 24:38Speaker 2: there and play every. Day and, uh they got to
- 24:40Speaker 2: watch you fail and see how you, react and if
- 24:43Speaker 2: you can bounce, back and the quicker you bounce, back
- 24:45Speaker 2: they it builds up that.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Leadership and, uh you, know most leaders don't say that they're.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Leaders they let other people say that they're leaders and
- 24:52Speaker 2: and and in this game, TODAY i think it can't
- 24:56Speaker 2: be analyzed and you can't evaluate, it so they don't
- 25:02Speaker 2: that leadership is like the last quality that they're looking
- 25:05Speaker 2: for because of analytics and. Data that's what they're looking more,
- 25:08Speaker 2: at what what you're not doing and what you can. Do,
- 25:12Speaker 2: uh but as far as, leadership it's like the last
- 25:15Speaker 2: quality that they're looking. For and, uh BUT i think
- 25:18Speaker 2: it should be something that You i'll take character THAT
- 25:21Speaker 2: i can teach you all the fundamentals and teach you the.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Game if you in the professional ram in minor leagues
- 25:27Speaker 2: and you come to the major, leagues if you've got
- 25:29Speaker 2: great character and great leadership, SKILLS i can teach you
- 25:33Speaker 2: how to hit and how to play the game the right.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Way.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Uh SO i would definitely take the character or the
- 25:39Speaker 2: leadership skills, first and THEN i can teach you whether
- 25:42Speaker 2: it's in business and whether this in in this, game
- 25:45Speaker 2: BECAUSE i think if you got great, character that that
- 25:49Speaker 2: shows that you know you're gonna represent me off the.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Field and, uh for.
- 25:54Speaker 2: The, angels it's it shows that you're gonna treat people
- 25:57Speaker 2: with love and respect around you and you're gonna make
- 26:00Speaker 2: people around you. Better and that's what good leaders. Do
- 26:03Speaker 2: they make you better even when they're going through rough.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Times, tory how is your perspective on the game changed
- 26:10Speaker 1: since you, retired especially watching it now from the front office.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Side? Oh, MAN i tell you.
- 26:18Speaker 2: What one thing that the, abs the a bs is
- 26:22Speaker 2: kind of it's cool because now they're getting it. Right
- 26:25Speaker 2: but the abs also When i'm watching it doesn't allow
- 26:29Speaker 2: the players to.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Swing they're thinking.
- 26:32Speaker 2: That they're supposed to be, balls and that's not how
- 26:35Speaker 2: a game should be. Played you should be ready to
- 26:37Speaker 2: hit no matter. What AND i think they're getting more
- 26:40Speaker 2: lax because if it's even an inch off the, plate
- 26:43Speaker 2: they're like tapping their. Head i'm, like you should haven't
- 26:46Speaker 2: swinging at. That it's can to protect the, play you,
- 26:49Speaker 2: Know and so it's kind of like it's kind of
- 26:54Speaker 2: like a push and pull good and. Bad you, know
- 26:57Speaker 2: there's a lot of good in. It you, know we
- 27:00Speaker 2: all KNEW Cd butler was, bad but now we really SEE.
- 27:04Speaker 3: C so you get some guys.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Exposed but at the same, time it's not about. That
- 27:17Speaker 2: it's really showing those guys. Up i'm be honest with.
- 27:19Speaker 2: YOU i like a lot of the umpires as as. People,
- 27:23Speaker 2: uh but it's really showing those guys up a.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Lot and.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Uh but at the same, TIME i think it's heard
- 27:29Speaker 2: the hitter because they're not aggressive.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Enough there there's two.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Lacks they if it's, close they're taking pitches down the
- 27:37Speaker 2: middle thinking that they're going to get a. Walk i've
- 27:40Speaker 2: never seen so many backward backward k's in my life.
- 27:45Speaker 5: This.
- 27:45Speaker 4: Year it seems to, me it seems kind of, awkward
- 27:49Speaker 4: to be, Honest AND i know the umpires are not
- 27:51Speaker 4: happy at.
- 27:51Speaker 5: All i'm not.
- 27:52Speaker 4: Sure and maybe there was a memo that went out
- 27:54Speaker 4: talking about you, know how they're trying to actually judge
- 27:58Speaker 4: these pitches and some of these you know that are
- 28:01Speaker 4: so borderline their, strikes but you know they're they're barely
- 28:05Speaker 4: in the. Box and you, know guys are getting a
- 28:08Speaker 4: lot of flak for either challenging the wrong ones or
- 28:11Speaker 4: not challenging other ones that you, know, confusion and we'll
- 28:16Speaker 4: have to see as it. GOES i think it's brand,
- 28:18Speaker 4: new so you, Know i'm all for, accuracy but with this,
- 28:21Speaker 4: One i'm not seeing it. Yet If i'm being, honest
- 28:25Speaker 4: it doesn't feel like the game THAT i. Knew and nobody,
- 28:28Speaker 4: gives you, know whatever about my opinion of WHAT i
- 28:32Speaker 4: want to, watch BUT i don't. KNOW i do say,
- 28:35Speaker 4: thinking and there's been a lot of storylines about. It
- 28:37Speaker 4: if that's what they're looking, for you got, it all?
- 28:40Speaker 4: Right all, right my last question for, today but it's
- 28:44Speaker 4: it's my personal. Thing and you were a career two
- 28:47Speaker 4: seventy seven hitter over seventeen. Years the average twenty one
- 28:50Speaker 4: homers eighty two. RBIs BUT i vividly remember you talking
- 28:54Speaker 4: about that you could count On Tory hunter to hit two,
- 28:58Speaker 4: eighty to hit twenty home round and driving eighty eighty.
- 29:01Speaker 4: Runs and If i'm, MISTAKEN i, Apologize BUT i feel
- 29:05Speaker 4: like you said, that you, know and that was but
- 29:07Speaker 4: you were saying that that's what you held yourself too every,
- 29:11Speaker 4: year and you were dependable and teams could count on
- 29:14Speaker 4: that at least from, you if not more the batting.
- 29:17Speaker 4: AVERAGE i think that you, know you do the best you.
- 29:22Speaker 4: CAN i always wanted to hit to. EIGHTY i never got,
- 29:25Speaker 4: there BUT i wanted to do, it AND i wasn't.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Satisfied yeah, Whatever, no, no, no it's it's part of
- 29:32Speaker 4: the part of the, deal had the home. Runs BUT
- 29:34Speaker 4: i thought it was AND i still think it's very.
- 29:36Speaker 4: Important do you think it's still important to try and
- 29:38Speaker 4: hit for high batting.
- 29:39Speaker 3: AVERAGE i think it's very important to hit for high bat.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Average if you've got a high bat average and you
- 29:45Speaker 2: got runners in scoring, POSITION i want you at the.
- 29:47Speaker 3: PLATE i don't want the guy.
- 29:48Speaker 2: That swings and whales at you know, it rarely hits
- 29:52Speaker 2: the ball. Consistently IF i IF i can have a
- 29:56Speaker 2: riot at the plate every time with the runs and
- 29:57Speaker 2: scoring position the ninth, DATING i Want Louise riots at
- 30:00Speaker 2: the plate because he's gonna make contact and giving me
- 30:03Speaker 2: a chance to jump up and. Down and SO i
- 30:07Speaker 2: still think that trying to make contact and trying to
- 30:09Speaker 2: get that average up is very.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Important AND i think with.
- 30:12Speaker 2: The you know that spell in five years, ago six years,
- 30:16Speaker 2: ago when we got into that launch launch angle and
- 30:19Speaker 2: the exit velocity and all these different. THINGS i think
- 30:21Speaker 2: the average suffered a, lot but guys are getting paid for.
- 30:25Speaker 2: That so if guys are getting paid for, that and
- 30:27Speaker 2: these players see that they're getting paid for, this but
- 30:31Speaker 2: hitting two forty two thirty with forty home runs and
- 30:35Speaker 2: sixty RBIs is they getting paid for?
- 30:38Speaker 3: That why WOULDN'T i try to do?
- 30:39Speaker 2: It SO i can't fault the players on. THAT i
- 30:43Speaker 2: fought the, philosophy AND i think that philosophy is starting
- 30:47Speaker 2: to change and come.
- 30:48Speaker 3: BACK i think you saw With Milwaukee brewers who.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Went out, there they hit and, ran and they bunted the,
- 30:54Speaker 2: Ball they played the game the right way and end
- 30:57Speaker 2: up making themselves a playoff contending. Team and uh, SO
- 31:01Speaker 2: i think you're going to see a lot of teams change.
- 31:03Speaker 2: That you saw it on the, playoffs the way they
- 31:05Speaker 2: played the game With Blue, jays and it was all
- 31:07Speaker 2: the little things that actually hurt them and on both.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Sides but H i definitely think that you, know when
- 31:15Speaker 2: you when you talk about the small things hidden for
- 31:18Speaker 2: average is a thing THAT i will want it to
- 31:20Speaker 2: plate opposed to trying to wait for a home. RUN
- 31:23Speaker 2: i want to see. ACTION i want to see, movement
- 31:25Speaker 2: And i'm pretty sure the faces want to see the
- 31:27Speaker 2: same thing as.
- 31:28Speaker 4: Well a lot of hits on the ground. TOO i,
- 31:30Speaker 4: mean it's it like the ground ball hit kind of you,
- 31:33Speaker 4: know it's not as popular and, whatever but that's how
- 31:37Speaker 4: you keep your bat average up is getting those ground ball.
- 31:39Speaker 4: Hits you, know you hit them, hard sometimes you.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Don't hit them.
- 31:42Speaker 4: Hard they all, count especially and you Mentioned joe using
- 31:45Speaker 4: the whole. Field there's there's a lot of hits over
- 31:47Speaker 4: there in that, coorehole you. Know but but it's not
- 31:49Speaker 4: going to happen with a swing that's trying to hit
- 31:52Speaker 4: the left field foul, pole you, know if that's your.
- 31:54Speaker 4: Goal so SO i think that that's kind of What
- 31:57Speaker 4: i'm getting. At and and you talked about, it said

- 32:02Speaker 4: and hopefully it is coming back. Around AND i like
- 32:05Speaker 4: Watching Stephen, KAAN i like Watching. Ariyahs these guys have
- 32:09Speaker 4: nothing in common with, me but they you, know it's, like,
- 32:11Speaker 4: MAN i like, THAT i like. That look at that punch.
- 32:13Speaker 4: Single that's. COOL i think it's really cool.
- 32:17Speaker 2: That big, hit with that big hit with runners and score.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Position you want that guy to, play you, know for.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Me it was a two, seventy two eighty hitter that you,

- 32:28Speaker 2: KNOW i was a guy who led off the first
- 32:30Speaker 2: couple of, years SO i, was you, know sending. Tables
- 32:33Speaker 2: and then they, say this guy has the mentality to hit, third,

- 33:07Speaker 2: AND i did it a couple of times in my
- 33:08Speaker 2: later and later in my.
