- 0:00Book three, chapters forty one to fifty. Chapter forty one, of contempt
- 0:08of all temporal honour, My son, make it no matter of thine if
- 0:14thou see others honored and exalted, and thyself despised and humbled, lift up
- 0:21thine heart to me in heaven. And then the contempt of men upon earth
- 0:26will not make THEE sad. O Lord, we are in blindness, and
- 0:32are quickly seduced by vanity. If I look rightly within myself, never was
- 0:40injury done unto me by any creature. And therefore I have naught whereof to
- 0:45complain before THEE. But because I have many times and grievously sinned against THEE,
- 0:53all creatures do justly take arms against me. Therefore to me, confusion
- 1:00and contempt are justly due. But to THEE praise and honor and glory.
- 1:07And except I dispose myself for this, namely, to be willing that every
- 1:12creature should despise and desert me, and that I should be esteemed altogether as
- 1:19nothing, I cannot be inwardly filled with peace and strength, nor spiritually enlightened,
- 1:26nor fully united to THEE. Chapter forty two. That our peace is
- 1:34not to be placed in men, my son, If thou set thy peace
- 1:41on any person, because thou hast high opinion of him and art familiar with
- 1:46him, thou shalt be unstable and entangled. But if thou betake thyself to
- 1:53the ever living and abiding truth, the desertion or death of a friend shall
- 1:59not make THEE sad. In me ought the love of thy friend to subsist,
- 2:06And for my sake is every one to be loved, whosoever he be,
- 2:10who appeareth to THEE good and is very dear to THEE. In this
- 2:15life without me friendship hath no strength or endurance. Neither is that love true
- 2:23and pure which I unite. Not thou oughtest to be so dead to such
- 2:30affections of beloved friends, that as far as in THEE lieth, thou wouldst
- 2:36rather choose to be without any companionship of men. The nearer a man approacheth
- 2:42to God, the further he recedeth from all earthly solace. The deeper also
- 2:50he descendeth into himself, and the violer he appereth in his own eyes,
- 2:54the higher he ascendeth towards God. But he who attributeth anything good to himself
- 3:04hindereth the grace of God from coming to him, because the grace of the
- 3:08Holy Ghost ever seeketh the humble heart. If thou couldst make thyself utterly nothing
- 3:16and empty thyself of the love of every creature, then should it be my
- 3:22part to overflow into thee with great grace. When thou settest thine eyes upon
- 3:29creatures, the face of the Creator is withdrawn from thee. Learn in all
- 3:36things, to conquer thyself for the Creator's sake. Then shalt thou be able
- 3:43to attain unto divine knowledge. How small soever anything be, if it beloved
- 3:50and regarded inordinately, it holdeth us back from the highest good, and corrupteth
- 4:00three against vain and worldly knowledge. My son, let not the fair and
- 4:08subtle sayings of men move thee. For the Kingdom of God is not in
- 4:13word, but in power. One Corinthians four, verse twenty. Give ear
- 4:20to my words, for they kindle the heart and enlighten the mind. They
- 4:26bring contrition, and they supply manifold consolations. Never read thou the word that
- 4:33thou mayest appear more learned or wise, but study for the mortification of thy
- 4:40sins, for this will be far more profitable for thee than the knowledge of
- 4:46many difficult questions. When thou hast read and learned many things, thou must
- 4:54always return to one first principle. I am he teacheth man knowledge Psalm ninety
- 5:02four, verse ten. And I give unto babes clearer knowledge than can be
- 5:08taught by man. He to whom I speak will be quickly wise, and
- 5:14shall grow much in the spirit. Woe unto them who inquire into many curious
- 5:19questions from men and take little heed concerning the way of my service. The
- 5:27time will come when Christ will appear, the Master of masters, the Lord
- 5:32of the angels, to hear the lessons of all, that is, to
- 5:38examine the consciences of each one. And then will he search Jerusalem with candles
- 5:46Zephaniah one, verse twelve. And the hidden things of darkness one Corinthians four,
- 5:55verse five. And the hidden things of darkness shall be made manest,
- 6:00and the arguings of tongues shall be silent. I am he who in an
- 6:09instant lift up the humble spirit to learn more reasonings of the eternal truth than
- 6:15if a man had studied ten years in the schools. I teach without noise
- 6:20of words, without confusion of opinions, without striving after honor, without clash
- 6:29of arguments. I am he who teach men to despise earthly things, to
- 6:34loathe things present, to seek things heavenly, to enjoy things eternal, to
- 6:43flee honors, to endure offenses, to place all hope in me, to
- 6:49desire nothing apart from me, and above all things, to love me ardently.
- 6:58For there was one who, by loving me from the bottom of his
- 7:01heart, learned divine things and spake things that were wonderful. He profited more
- 7:09by forsaking all things than by studying subtleties. But to some I speak common
- 7:15things, to others, special to some, I appear gently in signs and
- 7:21figures, and again to some I reveal mysteries in much light. The voice
- 7:28of books is one, but it informeth not all alike, because I inwardly
- 7:34am the teacher of truth, the searcher of the heart, the discerner of
- 7:40all thoughts, the mover of actions, distributing to each man, as I
- 7:46judge meet Chapter forty four, of not troubling ourselves about outward things, my
- 7:58son, in many things, it behooveth THEE to be ignorant, and to
- 8:03esteem thyself as one dead upon the earth, and as one to whom the
- 8:09whole world is crucified. Many things also thou must pass by with deaf ear,
- 8:16and must rather think upon those things which belong unto thy peace. It
- 8:20is more profitable to turn away thine eyes from those things that displease, and
- 8:28to leave each man to his own opinion, than to give thyself to discourses
- 8:33of strife. If thou stand well with God and hast his judgment in thy
- 8:39mind, thou wilt verily easily bear to be as one conquered. O Lord,
- 8:46to what have we come? Behold? A temporal loss is mourned over
- 8:52for a trifling gain. We labor and hurry, and spiritual loss passeth away
- 8:58into forgetful and we rarely recover it. That which profiteth little or nothing is
- 9:05looked after, and that which is altogether necessary is negligently passed by. Because
- 9:11the whole man slideth away to outward things, and unless he quickly recovereth himself
- 9:20in outward things, he willingly lieth down Chapter forty five, that we must
- 9:28not believe everyone, and that we are prone to fall in our words.
- 9:35Lord be thou my help in trouble, for vain is the help of man
- 9:41Psalm sixty, verse eleven. How often have I failed to find faithfulness where
- 9:48I thought I possessed it. How many times I have found it where I
- 9:54least expected Vain. Therefore is hope in men. But the self invasion of
- 10:00the just O God is in THEE. Blessed be thou, o, Lord,
- 10:05my God. In all things which happen unto us, we are weak
- 10:11and unstable. We are quickly deceived and quite changed. Who is the man
- 10:18who is able to keep himself so warily and circumspectly as not sometimes to come
- 10:24into some snare of perplexity? But he who trusteth in THEE, O Lord,
- 10:31and seeketh THEE with an unfeigned heart, doth not so easily slip.
- 10:37And if he fall into any tribulation, howsoever he may be entangled, yet
- 10:43very quickly he shall be delivered through THEE, or by THEE, shall be
- 10:48comforted, because Thou wilt not forsake him that trusteth in THEE. Unto the
- 10:54end. A friend who continueth faithful in all the distresses of heith friend is
- 11:01rare to be found. Thou, O Lord, Thou alone art most faithful
- 11:07in all things, and there is none other like unto THEE. Oh,
- 11:13how truly wise was that holy soul who said, my mind is steadfastly fixed,
- 11:20and it is grounded in Christ Saint Agatha. If thus it were with
- 11:26me, the fear of man should not so easily tempt me, nor the
- 11:31arrows of words move me. Who is sufficient to foresee all things? Who
- 11:39to guard beforehand against future ills? If even things which are foreseen sometimes hurt
- 11:46us, what can things which are not foreseen do but grievously injure? But
- 11:52wherefore have I not better provided for myself? Miserable that I am? Why
- 12:00two have I given such heed to others? But we are men? Nor
- 12:05are we other than frail men, even though by many we are reckoned and
- 12:09called angels. Whom shall I trust? O? Lord, whom shall I
- 12:16trust? But THEE Thou art the truth and deceivest not, nor canst be
- 12:22deceived. And on the other hand, every man is a liar Psalm one
- 12:28hundred and sixteen, verse eleven, Romans three, verse four, weak,
- 12:35unstable, and frail, especially in his words, so that one ought scarcely
- 12:39ever to believe what seemeth to sound right on the face of it. With
- 12:46what wisdom hast thou warned does beforehand to beware of men, And that a
- 12:52man's foes are they of his own household Matthew ten, Verses seventeen and thirty
- 12:58six. And that we must not believe if one say unto us lo here
- 13:05or lo there Matthew twenty four, verse twenty three. I have been taught
- 13:11by my loss, and oh that I may prove more careful and not foolish.
- 13:16Hereby be cautious, sayth some one, be cautious, keep unto thyself
- 13:24what I tell THEE. And whilst I am silent and believe that it is
- 13:28hid with me, he himself cannot keep silence concerning it, but straightway betrayeth
- 13:35me and himself, and goeth his way. Protect me, O Lord,
- 13:41from such mischief making and reckless men. Let me not fall into their hands,
- 13:48nor ever do such things myself. Put a true and steadfast word into
- 13:52my mouth, and remove a deceitful tongue far from me. What I will
- 14:00not suffer. I ought by all means to beware of doing. Oh,
- 14:05how good and peace making a thing. It is to be silent concerning others
- 14:11and not carelessly to believe all reports, nor to hand them on. Further,
- 14:18How good also to lay oneself open to few, to seek, ever,
- 14:22to have thee as the beholder of the heart, not to be carried
- 14:28about with every wind of words, but to desire that all things inward and
- 14:33outward be done according to the good pleasure of thy will. How safe for
- 14:39the preserving of heavenly grace to fly from human approval, and not to long
- 14:46after the things which seem to win admiration abroad, but to follow with all
- 14:52earnestness those things which bring amendment of life and heavenly Further, how many have
- 15:01been injured by their virtue being made known and too hastily praised. How truly
- 15:07profitable hath been grace preserved in silence in this frail life, which, as
- 15:15we are told, is all temptation and warfare. Chapter forty six of having
- 15:26confidence in God When evil words are cast at us, my son, stand
- 15:33fast and believe in me. For what are words but words? They fly
- 15:39through the air, but they bruise no stone. If thou art guilty,
- 15:45think how thou wouldst gladly amend thyself. If thou knowest nothing against thyself,
- 15:50consider that thou wilt gladly bear this for God's sake. It is little enough
- 15:56that thou sometimes hast to bear hearts, for thou art not yet able to
- 16:03bear hard blows. And wherefore do such trivial matters go to thine heart,
- 16:10except that thou art yet carnal, and regardest men more than thou artest.
- 16:17For because thou fearest to be despised, thou art unwilling to be reproved for
- 16:22thy faults, and seekest paltry shelters of excuses. But look better into thyself,
- 16:30and thou shalt know that the world is still alive in THEE and the
- 16:36vain love of pleasing men. For when thou fleest away from being abased and
- 16:41confounded for thy faults, it is plain that thou art neither truly humble nor
- 16:48truly dead to the world, and that the world is not crucified to THEE.
- 16:53But hearken to my word, and thou shalt not care for ten thousand
- 16:57words of men. Behold, if all things could be said against THEE which
- 17:03the utmost malice could invent, what should it hurt THEE? If thou wert
- 17:08altogether to let it go, and make no more account of it than of
- 17:12a mote. Could it pluck out a single hair of thy head. But
- 17:18he that hath no heart within him, and hath not God before his eyes,
- 17:25is easily moved by a word of reproach. But he who trusteth in
- 17:30Me and seeketh not to abide by his own judgment, shall be free from
- 17:34the fear of men. For I am the judge and the discerner of all
- 17:40secrets. I know how the thing hath been done. I know both the
- 17:45injurer and the bearer from me went forth that word by my permission. This
- 17:53hath happened, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. Luke to
- 18:00thirty five. I shall judge the guilty and the innocent, But beforehand I
- 18:06have willed to try them both by a secret judgment. The testimony of men
- 18:12often deceiveth My judgment is true. It will stand, and it shall not
- 18:19be overturned. It commonly lieth hid, and only to few in certain cases
- 18:26is it made known. Yet it never erreth, nor can err. Although
- 18:32it seemed not right to the eyes of foolish men to me. Therefore must
- 18:37men have recourse in all judgment, and must not lean to their opinion.
- 18:44For there shall no evil happen to the just Proverbs twelve, verse twenty one.
- 18:51Whatsoever may be sent to him by God, even though some unjust charge
- 18:56be brought against him, he will care little. Nor again will he exalt
- 19:02above measure, if through others he be clearly vindicated. For he considereth that
- 19:07I am he who try the hearts and reigns Psalm seven, verse nine,
- 19:15who judge not outwardly and according to human appearance. For often in mine eyes
- 19:22that is found blameworthy, which in the judgment of men is held worthy of
- 19:26praise. O, Lord God, O judge, just, strong and patient,
- 19:33who knowest the frailty and sinfulness of men. Be thou my strength and
- 19:40my whole confidence. For my own conscience sufficeth me not. Thou knowest what
- 19:47I know not, and therefore ought I under all rebuke to humble myself and
- 19:52to bear it meekly. Therefore, mercifully forgive me as often as I have
- 19:56not done this, and want me the next time. The grace of greater
- 20:02endurance for better unto me is Thine abundant pity for the attainment of Thy pardon
- 20:10than the righteousness which I believe myself to have for defense against my conscience,
- 20:15which lieth weight against me. Although I know nothing against myself. Yet I
- 20:22am not hereby justified One Corinthians four, verse four, Because if thy mercy
- 20:29were removed away in thy sight, should no man living be justified. Psalm
- 20:36one hundred and forty three, Verse two, Chapter forty seven. That all
- 20:44troubles are to be endured for the sake of eternal life. My son.
- 20:51Let not the labors which thou hast undertaken for me break THEE down, nor
- 20:56let tribulations cast THEE down in any wise. But let my promise strengthen and
- 21:03comfort THEE. In every event. I am sufficient to reward THEE above all
- 21:10measure and extent. Not long shalt thou labor hear, nor always be weighted
- 21:17down with sorrows. Wait yet a little while, and thou shalt see a
- 21:22speedy end of thine evils. And hour shall come when all labor and confusion
- 21:27shall cease. Little and short is all that passeth away with time. Do
- 21:37earnestly what thou dost labor faithfully in my vineyard. I will be thy reward.
- 21:45Write, read, sing, weep, be silent, pray, endure
- 21:52adversities, manfully eternal life is worthy of all these conflicts, YEA, And
- 21:59of greater peace shall come in one day, which is known to the Lord,
- 22:04which shall be neither day nor night Zachariah fourteen, verse seven. But
- 22:11light, eternal, infinite clearness, steadfast peace, and undisturbed rest. Thou
- 22:18shalt not say, then, who shall deliver me from the body of this
- 22:23death Romans seven, verse twenty four, Nor cry out woe is me?
- 22:30For my sojourning is prolonged Psalm one hundred and twenty, because death will be
- 22:37utterly destroyed, and there shall be salvation which can never fail. No more
- 22:42anxiety, happy, delight, sweet and noble society. O. If thou
- 22:49sawest the unfading crowns of the saints in heaven, and with what great glory
- 22:56they now rejoice, who aforetime were reckoned by this world contemptibly, and as
- 23:02it were unworthy of life, Truly thou wouldst immediately humble thyself even to the
- 23:07earth, and wouldst desire rather to be in subjection to all than to have
- 23:15authority over one. Nor wouldst thou long for pleasant days of this life.
- 23:21But wouldst more rejoice to be afflicted for God's sake, and wouldst esteem it
- 23:26gain to be counted for naught amongst men. Oh, if these things were
- 23:33sweet to thy taste and moved thee to the bottom of thine heart, how
- 23:37shouldst thou dare even once to complain? Are not all laborious things to be
- 23:44endured for the sake of eternal life? It is no small thing the losing
- 23:49or gaining the Kingdom of God. Lift up therefore thy face to Heaven.
- 23:56Behold I and all my saints with me, who in this world had a
- 24:00hard conflict, now rejoice, are now comforted, are now secure, are
- 24:07now at peace, and shall remain with me evermore in the Kingdom of my
- 24:12Father. Chapter forty eight. Of the Day of Eternity and of the straitnesses
- 24:22of this life, Oh, most blessed mansion of the city which is above,
- 24:29Oh, most clear day of Eternity, which the night obscureth not but
- 24:33the supreme Truth, ever enlighteneth day, always joyful, always secure, and
- 24:42never changing its state into those which are contrary. Oh, would that this
- 24:48day might shine forth, and that all these temporal things would come to an
- 24:53end. It shineth indeed upon the saints, glowing with unending brightness, but
- 25:00only from afar, and through a glass upon those who are pilgrims on the
- 25:06earth. The citizens of Heaven know how glorious that day is, the exiled
- 25:14sons of Eve grown, Because this is bitter and wearisome. The days of
- 25:19this life are few and evil, full of sorrows and straits, where man
- 25:26is defiled with many sins, ensnared with many passions, bound fast with many
- 25:32fears, wearied with many cares, distracted, with many questionings, entangled with
- 25:40many vanities, compassed about with many errors, worn away, with many labours,
- 25:48weighed down with temptations, enervated by pleasures, tormented by poverty. Oh,
- 25:56when shall there be an end of these evil? When shall I be
- 26:00delivered from the wretched slavery of my sins? When shall I be mindful,
- 26:06O, Lord of THEE alone? When shall I rejoice in THEE to the
- 26:11full. When shall I be in true liberty without any impediment, without any
- 26:17burden on mind or body? When shall there be solid peace, peace,
- 26:22immoveable and secure peace within and without peace, firm on every side, Blessed
- 26:32Jesus, When shall I stand to behold THEE. When shall I gaze upon
- 26:37the glory of Thy kingdom? When shalt thou be to me all in all?
- 26:42O? When shall I be with THEE in thy kingdom, which thou
- 26:45hast prepared from the foundation of the world for them that love THEE. I
- 26:52am left destitute and exile in a hostile land, where are daily wars and
- 26:57grievous misfortunes. Console my exile, mitigate my sorrow for towards THEE. All
- 27:07my desire longeth. For all is to me a burden. Whatsoever this world
- 27:14offereth for consolation. I yearn to enjoy THEE intimately, but I cannot attain
- 27:21unto it. I long to cleave to heavenly things, but temporal things and
- 27:26unmortified passions press me down. In my mind, I would be above all
- 27:33things, but in my flesh I am unwillingly compelled to be beneath them.
- 27:38So wretched man that I am. I fight with myself and am made grievous
- 27:44even unto myself. While the spirit seeketh to be above and the flesh to
- 27:49be beneath. Oh, how I suffer inwardly, While with the mind I
- 27:56discourse on heavenly things, and present a crowd of carnal things rushes upon me.
- 28:03While I pray my God, be not thou far from me, nor
- 28:07depart in wrath from thy servant. Cast forth thy lightning and scatter them.
- 28:15Send out thine arrows Psalm one hundred and twenty one, verse twelve. And
- 28:21let all delusions of my enemy be confounded. Recall my senses unto thyself.
- 28:27Cause me to forget all worldly things. Grant me quickly to cast away and
- 28:33despise the imaginations of sin. Succor me O eternal truth, that no vanity
- 28:41may move me. Come unto me, O heavenly sweetness, and let all
- 28:45impurity flee from before thy face. Pardon me also, and of thy mercy
- 28:52deal gently with me whensoever in prayer I think on anything besides THEE. For
- 28:59truly I confess that I am wont to be continually distracted, For often and
- 29:04often wherein the body I stand or sit, there I myself am not,
- 29:11But rather am I there whither I am born by my thoughts. Where my
- 29:15thought is there am I? And there commonly is my thought? Where that
- 29:21which I love is that readily occurreth to me, which naturally delighteth or pleaseth
- 29:29through custom. Wherefore thou who art the truth, hast said plainly, where
- 29:36your treasure is, there will your heart be also Matthew six, verse twenty
- 29:41one. If I love Heaven, I gladly meditate on heavenly things. If
- 29:48I love the world, I rejoice in the delights of the world, and
- 29:52are made sorry by its adversities. If I love the flesh, I am
- 29:57continually imagining the things which belonged to the flesh. If I love the Spirit,
- 30:03I am delighted by meditating on spiritual things. For whatsoever things I love,
- 30:11on these I readily converse and listen, and carry home with me the
- 30:15images of them. But blessed is that man who, for thy sake,
- 30:19O Lord, is willing to part from all creatures, who doth violence to
- 30:26his fleshly nature, and crucifieth the lusts of the flesh by the fervor of
- 30:30his spirit, so that with serene conscience he may offer unto thee a pure
- 30:37prayer and be made worthy to enter into the angelic choirs, having shut out
- 30:42from himself both outwardly and inwardly, all worldly things. Chapter forty nine of
- 30:53the desire after eternal life, and how great blessings are promised to those whose
- 31:00strive, my son, When thou feelest the desire of eternal happiness to be
- 31:07poured into THEE from above, and longest to depart from the tabernacle of this
- 31:12body, that thou mayst contemplate My glory without shadow of turning. Enlarge thine
- 31:19heart and take in this holy inspiration with all thy desire. Give most hearty
- 31:27thanks to the Supreme Goodness, who dealeth with THEE. So graciously visiteth THEE,
- 31:34so lovingly stirreth THEE up, so fervently raiseth THEE so powerfully, lest
- 31:42thou sink down through thine own weight to earthly things. For not by thine
- 31:49own meditating or striving dost thou receive this gift, but by the soul gracious
- 31:56condescension of supreme grace and divine reward, to the end that thou mayest make
- 32:02progress in virtue and in more humility, and prepare thyself of future conflicts,
- 32:09and cleave unto me with all the affection of thine heart, and strive to
- 32:15serve me with fervent will, My son, Often the fire burneth, but
- 32:22the flame ascendeth not without smoke. So also the desires of some men burn
- 32:29towards heavenly things, and yet they are not free from the temptation of carnal
- 32:35affection. Thus, therefore they are not acting with an altogether simple desire for
- 32:40God's glory when they pray to him so earnestly. Such too, is sometimes
- 32:47thy desire when thou hast imagined it to be so earnest. For that is
- 32:53not pure and perfect, which is tainted with thine own self seeking. Seek
- 33:01thou not what is pleasant and advantageous to thyself, but what is acceptable and
- 33:07honorable unto me. For if thou judgest rightly, thou must choose and follow
- 33:15after My appointment rather than thine own desire. Yea rather than anything that can
- 33:22be desired. I know thy desire, and I have heard thy many groanings.
- 33:29Already thou longest to be in the glorious liberty of the children of God.
- 33:34Already the eternal home delighteth thee and the heavenly country full of joy.
- 33:40But the hour is not yet come. There remaineth still another season, even
- 33:46a season of warfare, a season of labor and probation, Thou desirest to
- 33:53be filled with the chief good, but thou canst not attain it immediately.
- 34:00I am that good wait for me until the Kingdom of God shall come.
- 34:07Thou must still be tried upon earth and be exercised in many things. Consolation
- 34:15shall from time to time be given THEE, but abundant satisfying shall not be
- 34:20granted. Be strong therefore, and be thou brave, both in working and
- 34:27in suffering things which are against thy nature. Thou must put on the new
- 34:31man and be changed into another man. Thou must often do what thou wouldst
- 34:37not, and thou must leave undone what thou wouldst do. What pleaseth others
- 34:45shall have good success, what pleaseth THEE shall have no prosperity. What others
- 34:52say shall be listened to. What Thou sayest shall receive no heed. Others
- 34:59shall ask and receive. Thou shalt ask and not obtain. Others shall be
- 35:06great in the report of men. But about THEE shall nothing be spoken to
- 35:12others. This or that shall be entrusted. Thou shalt be judged useful for
- 35:17naught. For this cause. Nature shall sometimes be filled with sadness, and
- 35:27it is a great thing, if thou bear it silently. In this and
- 35:31many like things, the faithful servant of the Lord is wont to be tried,
- 35:37how far he is able to deny himself and bring himself into subjection in
- 35:43all things. Scarcely is there anything in which thou hast need to mortify thyself
- 35:50so much as in seeing things which are adverse to thy will, especially when
- 35:55things are commanded THEE to be done which seem to THEE inexpedient or of little
- 36:01use to THEE. And because thou darest not resist a higher power being under
- 36:07authority, therefore it seemeth hard for THEE to shape thy course according to the
- 36:14nod of another, and to forego thine own opinion. But consider my son,
- 36:22the fruit of these labors, the swift end, and the reward exceeding
- 36:27great. And thou shalt find it no pain to bear them, then,
- 36:31but rather the strongest solace of thy patience. For even in exchange for this
- 36:38trifling desire, which thou hast readily forsaken, thou shalt always have thy will
- 36:45in Heaven. There Verily thou shalt find all that thou wouldst all, that
- 36:51thou canst long for There thou shalt have all good within thy power, without
- 36:58the fear of losing it. There Thy will, ever at one with mine,
- 37:02shall desire nothing outward, nothing for itself. There No men shall withstand
- 37:10THEE, none shall complain of THEE, none shall hinder, nothing shall stand
- 37:16in thy path. But all things desired by THEE shall be present together,
- 37:22and shall refresh thy whole affection and fill it up even to the brim.
- 37:29There I will glory for the scorn suffered here, the garment of praise for
- 37:35sorrow, and for the lowest place a throne in the kingdom. For ever
- 37:40there shall appear the fruit of obedience, the labor of repentance, shall rejoice,
- 37:46and humble subjection shall be crowned gloriously. Now therefore, bow thyself humbly
- 37:55under the hands of all men. Nor let it trouble THEE who said this
- 38:00or who ordered that. But take special heed that, whether thy superior,
- 38:06thy inferior, or thy equal, require anything from THEE, or even show
- 38:12a desire for it, take it all in good part, and study with
- 38:17a good will to fulfill the desire. Let one seek this another that,
- 38:24let this man glory in this and that man in that and be praised a
- 38:30thousand thousand times. But rejoice thou only in the contempt of thyself and in
- 38:37mine own good pleasure and glory. This is what thou art to long for,
- 38:43even that, whether by fire or by death, God may be ever
- 38:46magnified in thee. Philippians one, verse twenty, chapter fifty. How desolate
- 39:00man ought to commit himself into the hands of God, O Lord, Holy
- 39:07Father. Be thou blessed now and evermore. Because as thou wilt, so
- 39:14it is done, and what thou doest is good. Let thy servant rejoice
- 39:21in THEE, not in himself nor in any other. Because thou alone art
- 39:25the true joy. Thou art my hope and my crown. Thou art my
- 39:31joy and my honor. O Lord, What hath thy servant which he receiveth
- 39:38not from THEE, even without merit of his own. Thine are all things
- 39:45which thou hast given, and which thou hast made. I am poor and
- 39:51in misery, even from my youth up Psalm one hundred and thirty eight,
- 39:55verse fifteen. And my soul is sorrowful unto tears. Sometimes also it is
- 40:02disquieted within itself because of the sufferings which are coming upon it. I long
- 40:10after the joy of peace. For the peace of thy children do I beseech,
- 40:15For in the light of thy comfort they are fed by thee. If
- 40:21thou give peace, if thou pour into me holy joy, the soul of
- 40:25thy servant shall be full of melody and devout in thy praise. But if
- 40:31thou withdraw thyself, as too often thou art wont, he will not be
- 40:37able to run in the way of thy commandments. But rather he will smite
- 40:42his breast and will bow his knees, because it is not with him as
- 40:45yesterday and the day before, when Thy candle shined upon his head Job twenty
- 40:52nine, verse three, and he walked under the shadow of thy wings.
- 40:59Psalm said seventeen, verse eight, from the temptations which beset him, O
- 41:07Father, Righteous and ever to be praised. The hour cometh when thy servant
- 41:12is to be proved, O beloved Father. It is well that in this
- 41:16hour thy servants suffer somewhat for thy sake, O Father, ever more to
- 41:23be adored, as the hour cometh, which thou foreknowest from everlasting, when
- 41:30for a little while thy servant should outwardly bow down but always live inwardly with
- 41:36THEE, when for a little while he should be little regarded, humbled,
- 41:42and fail in the eyes of men, should be wasted with sufferings and weaknesses,
- 41:47to rise again with THEE in the dawn of the new light, and
- 41:52be glorified in the heavenly places. Oh, Holy Father, thou hast ordained
- 41:59it so and so hast willed it. And that is done which thou thyself
- 42:05hast commanded. For this is thy favor to thy friend, that he should
- 42:10suffer and be troubled in the world for thy love's sake, how often soever,
- 42:16and by whomsoever, and whosoever thou hast suffered it to be done.
- 42:22Without Thy counsel and providence, and without cause, nothing cometh to pass on
- 42:29the earth. It is good for me, Lord, that I have been
- 42:32in trouble, that I may learn Thy statutes Psalm one hundred and nineteen,
- 42:38verse seventy one, and may cast away all pride of heart and presumption.
- 42:45It is profitable for me that confusion hath covered my face, that I may
- 42:50seek to THEE for consolation rather than unto men. By this also I have
- 42:57learned to dread Thine unsearchable judge, who afflictst the just with the wicked,
- 43:04but not without equity and justice. Thanks be unto THEE, because thou hast
- 43:12not spared my sins, but hast beaten me with stripes of love, afflicting
- 43:17pains and sending troubles upon me. Without and within. There is none who
- 43:23can console me of all things which are under heaven, but thou only,
- 43:30O Lord, my God, Thou heavenly physician of souls, who dost scourge
- 43:35and hast mercy, who leadest down to hell and bringest up again Job thirteen,
- 43:43Verse two. Thy discipline over me, and thy rod itself shall teach
- 43:49me. Behold, O, Heavenly Father, I am in thy hands.
- 43:57I bow myself under the rod of thy correction. Smite my back and my
- 44:02neck, that I may bend my crookedness to thy will make me a pious
- 44:07and lowly disciple, as thou wert wont to be kind, that I may
- 44:13walk according to every nod of thine to THEE. I commend myself and all
- 44:20that I have for correction. Better is it to be punished here than Hereafter
- 44:27Thou knowest all things and each of them, and nothing remaineth hid from THEE
- 44:32in man's conscience before they are. Thou knowest that they will be, And
- 44:39thou needest not that any man teach THEE or admonish THEE concerning the things which
- 44:45are done upon the earth. Thou knowest what is expedient for my profit,
- 44:52and how greatly trouble serveth unto the scrubbing off the rust of sin. Do
- 44:59with me according to Thy desired good pleasure, and despise, not my life,
- 45:04which is full of sin, known to none, so entirely and fully
- 45:08as to THEE alone. Grant me, o, Lord, to know that
- 45:15which ought to be known, to love that which ought to be loved,
- 45:21to praise that which pleaseth THEE most, to esteem that which is precious in
- 45:27thy sight, to blame that which is vile in Thine eyes. Suffer me
- 45:34not to judge according to the sight of bodily eyes, nor to give sentence
- 45:37according to the hearing of the ears of ignorant men, but to discern in
- 45:44true judgment between visible and spiritual things, and above all things, to be
- 45:50ever seeking after the will of Thy good pleasure. Oftentimes the senses of men
- 45:58are deceived in judging The lovers of the world also are deceived in that they
- 46:04love only visible things. What is a man better, because by man he
- 46:09is reckoned very great. The deceiver deceiveth the deceiver, the vain man,
- 46:16the vain, the blind man, the blind, the weak man, the
- 46:21weak when they exalt one another, and in truth, they rather put to
- 46:27shame while they foolishly praise. For as humble Saint Francis saith, what each
- 46:34one is in Thine eyes, so much he is, and no more.
