- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop, and
- 0:23let's start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the Chili Chicken coop.
- 0:30Yes, the sun is up and it's Sunday, so I can be out here a
- 0:34little bit later, but it's cold and makes me say spring is a
- 0:39little too far away. Anyway, we're talking about the
- 0:43pursuit of happiness. Yeah, big subject, right?
- 0:46I think everyone intense, I'm going to use that word, intends
- 0:51to be happy. They want to be happy.
- 0:53They think about being happy. But it's a pursuit.
- 0:55And it often feels like it's a puzzle.
- 0:58And the entire puzzle is a solid color and you're trying to sort
- 1:01through it and figure it out. And the challenge with all of
- 1:04that is that sometimes it sucks. And sometimes you're doing
- 1:08something that you think will make you happy and in turn, it
- 1:11actually doesn't make you happy. And you're saying to yourself, I
- 1:14am just don't even understand why.
- 1:17I mean, I intended for this to be a good thing.
- 1:18I intended that I would be happy doing it.
- 1:22And then it turns out it's not. And often we try to do things,
- 1:28things, that's the optimal word here, things to make us happy.
- 1:33And, you know, being happy is not about the things.
- 1:37It's it, it, it accentuates it. It's kind of like that old
- 1:40saying that money doesn't make somebody awful.
- 1:44They accentuates what's already there.
- 1:47Or drugs do the same thing. Alcohol does the same thing.
- 1:51And it kind of accentuates what's really going on.
- 1:54And I don't know, I don't like absolutes as any of you know,
- 1:58who listen all the time. I don't think there are
- 2:00absolutes in this world. I think it's always in the frame
- 2:04of maybe, but one of the things that I, I know for certain this
- 2:08is a, an absolute certain thing is that this is a, a skill.
- 2:14Being happy is a skill. It's something you have to
- 2:16cultivate. You have to work on it.
- 2:18You have to choose to find it. Like for instance, I did a
- 2:23podcast last week about how hard the farm work is and it is, but
- 2:27I find I choose to find happiness in it.
- 2:30I choose to find things in it. They, it does make me feel a
- 2:33certain way, but is it because the work is fun or is it that I
- 2:38find fun in it? It's a big question, right?
- 2:41So you can follow all the right steps of someone else's
- 2:45happiness plan that created them happiness and then find out this
- 2:48is terrible and how many times we've done that.
- 2:51I, I can remember being in high school taking classes for art,
- 2:56like I wanted to be an artist so badly, writer, artist, all of
- 3:01those things on that creative side of the brain.
- 3:04And I went to an art class and I was just daunted by how awful
- 3:12the process was. I didn't like one bit of it.
- 3:15Not one little thing about the class did I enjoy.
- 3:18And I remember thinking to myself, this can't be what this
- 3:21is like. I mean, this is terrible.
- 3:24And I, I kind of was too young to think about it the proper way
- 3:28where it was like it's this is about one particular form 1
- 3:31particular class. Instead of making it about the
- 3:34whole subject, which is what I ended up doing, making it about
- 3:37the whole subject of art as opposed to just making it about
- 3:41one person who's just not happy themselves and worried about
- 3:46teaching high school kids art, which can't be easy.
- 3:49Let's just put it out there and I, I refuse to take more
- 3:53classes. I was just like, no, I'm not
- 3:55going to do it. Now if I look back, could I say
- 3:57that was a mistake? Well, I could if I chose to, but
- 4:00I won't because I'm like, no, it wasn't a mistake.
- 4:02It was just part of the journey. Again, it's a maybe for me.
- 4:06And I think that's really important in, in one of my
- 4:10personal tricks with this is in the pursuit of happiness.
- 4:14Everything gets framed under that.
- 4:16And then you keep, you can keep searching and seeing that what
- 4:21works, But it, there's no secret formula for everyone.
- 4:26It I mean, that's the, that's the paradox of it all.
- 4:28There is no secret formula that we all have to follow in the
- 4:32pursuit of happiness. And one of the biggest things
- 4:36that we do that take us out of the frame of happiness is
- 4:39thinking that we did something wrong and criticizing ourselves
- 4:43in it. It wasn't wrong that I didn't
- 4:45like the class. It was just a choice in the
- 4:48moment, but it was part of the journey, so it wasn't wrong.
- 4:51The journey you're on is not wrong.
- 4:53And you got to be careful of that self criticism because it's
- 4:57a big thing. It's a huge thing.
- 4:59I was out here, I was talking about how we're doing a bunch of
- 5:03work on the farm and I was out here talking to my husband
- 5:06yesterday telling him about how well I wish I had done this
- 5:09differently. And I, I was saying it and I
- 5:13heard myself and I was like, huh, I do wish I had done it
- 5:17differently in one certain aspect of the the garden that we
- 5:21were talking about. However, I don't regret it and I
- 5:24don't, I'm not sitting there lamenting it and criticizing
- 5:27myself for it. I did what I did because I knew
- 5:30what I knew. But now I know more so I can do
- 5:32something different. As Maya Angelou always says, you
- 5:35know, when you know better, you can do better.
- 5:37And at the time I didn't know better, so I wasn't doing
- 5:39better. And it's a tricky little thing,
- 5:42but in the pursuit of happiness, you have to allow yourself that
- 5:45distance from self criticism. Go into that framework of maybe.
- 5:50And remember it's all part of the same journey.
- 5:53All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and
- 5:55pursue some happiness today. I know I am and I will see you
- 5:59all tomorrow. Bye.
