- 2:02Speaker 3: I received it. I appreciate you.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I had to cap today's episode off at sixteen questions,
- 2:08Speaker 2: and trust me, we have a lot of really good
- 2:11Speaker 2: topics here, ranging from what is the thing that I
- 2:14Speaker 2: wish that I had more time for? Recommendations for how
- 2:18Speaker 2: people can meet other people in new cities, how to
- 2:21Speaker 2: not compare yourself to other runners, talking about Internet privacy
- 2:25Speaker 2: and specifically privacy on Strava. Tips for starting a podcast,
- 2:31Speaker 2: talking about goal setting, What do you do when you're
- 2:33Speaker 2: spending time at home alone. I'm touching on investing. Did
- 2:37Speaker 2: I see my life going this way? I mean a
- 2:39Speaker 2: lot of a lot of really good stuff in here.
- 2:42Speaker 2: So thank you again, all of you for your questions
- 2:45Speaker 2: and engaging with me and supporting me and just caring
- 2:49Speaker 2: about this thing and also yourself. I think that that's
- 2:53Speaker 2: a really good point to drive home here, is that, Yes,
- 2:55Speaker 2: this is my show. It's this thing that I have created.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Hurdle is my livelihood and it's my passion. But I
- 3:03Speaker 2: do it because I want to help you, and so
- 3:06Speaker 2: hopefully you feel that by engaging here and showing up
- 3:10Speaker 2: here and listening in regularly that you two are bettering.
- 3:14Speaker 2: You make sure you're following along with hurdles over on
- 3:17Speaker 2: social it's a hurdle podcasts. I am over at Emily
- 3:19Speaker 2: a Body, And as the season winds down, do me
- 3:23Speaker 2: a favor, give me a little gift rate.
- 3:25Speaker 3: And review the show if you haven't done so just
- 3:27Speaker 3: yet in Apple.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts, Spotify readings. I'll
- 3:32Speaker 2: take them all. Okay, okay, okay, here we go with that.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Let's get to hurdling.
- 3:59Speaker 4: What's the one thing that you wish you had more
- 4:02Speaker 4: time to do. It may be working with an organization
- 4:09Speaker 4: you care about, It could be mental health, it could
- 4:13Speaker 4: be anything you want.
- 4:14Speaker 5: But I know how busy.
- 4:15Speaker 4: You are, and I just was curious, what do you
- 4:19Speaker 4: wish you had more capacity to do?
- 4:23Speaker 5: If you could wave your magic Wand so.
- 4:25Speaker 2: This question it's interesting, right because I do believe that
- 4:28Speaker 2: when we really care about things, we make time for them.
- 4:32Speaker 2: But sometimes you have to get to a point where
- 4:35Speaker 2: you realize that something is of a certain importance to.
- 4:39Speaker 3: You that you create this space.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Last week I gave a talk in Baltimore to a
- 4:46Speaker 2: large delegation of young women, all girls and like their
- 4:50Speaker 2: mid to late teens, and for me that felt and
- 4:54Speaker 2: gave me a sense of purpose that really like ignited
- 4:58Speaker 2: this fire inside of me. So in terms of something
- 5:01Speaker 2: I would love more time to do, would be volunteering.
- 5:04Speaker 2: That can be a little sticky and a little challenging
- 5:07Speaker 2: because obviously, as we all do, I need to make
- 5:09Speaker 2: a living, and so often work will get prioritized above that,
- 5:14Speaker 2: so to speak. But my goal is to do some
- 5:18Speaker 2: thinking on that and think about how I can incorporate
- 5:20Speaker 2: more doing good and spending time mentoring in what I
- 5:24Speaker 2: have going on right now. Also, I feel like i'd
- 5:27Speaker 2: be remiss so I didn't mention dating here. I'd love
- 5:30Speaker 2: to create more time to prioritize this, but that's uh,
- 5:36Speaker 2: that's a work in progress.
- 5:37Speaker 6: Hey, Emily, this is Olivia. I'm from Colorado. I have
- 5:41Speaker 6: medium long lank here, mostly just because I put it
- 5:44Speaker 6: up in ponytails when I go for a run or
- 5:46Speaker 6: work out. And I know that you do too, So
- 5:50Speaker 6: I would love to know if you would ever do
- 5:52Speaker 6: short hair or kind of like shorter medium likes here,
- 5:56Speaker 6: And also if you would talk to me out of
- 5:59Speaker 6: doing that myself, because I'm about to do that, so
- 6:02Speaker 6: thigs bye.
- 6:03Speaker 2: All right, I'm never going to dissuade someone from trying
- 6:07Speaker 2: a short hair a moment. I oh my goodness, I
- 6:10Speaker 2: want to say, like Halloween twenty fourteen, I dressed up
- 6:13Speaker 2: as a flapper and I wore this like super cute
- 6:16Speaker 2: short brunette wig.
- 6:18Speaker 3: It was a little bob and it looked so cute.
- 6:21Speaker 2: And when I posted photos from that Halloween, I got
- 6:23Speaker 2: so much positive feedback. Everyone was like, you should totally
- 6:25Speaker 2: try this, et cetera. I tried it. I did not
- 6:28Speaker 2: think that my real short hair looked anywhere near as
- 6:31Speaker 2: cute as that short bob. Plus, like a wig, you
- 6:34Speaker 2: don't have to worry about Friz, you get the idea.
- 6:36Speaker 2: So for me, long hair is just it's kind of
- 6:39Speaker 2: where it's at. I don't think I'll ever have a
- 6:41Speaker 2: hairstyle where I can't put it back in, like a
- 6:43Speaker 2: low bun or a ponytail. I say, as I reached
- 6:46Speaker 2: at the back of my head to grasp my current
- 6:49Speaker 2: low bun. But you can find what works for you.
- 6:51Speaker 2: I mean, I have plenty of friends. My college roommate
- 6:54Speaker 2: just cut her hair on her head and she said
- 6:56Speaker 2: it's like the best decision she's ever made.
- 6:58Speaker 3: So you've got to feel, well, what's right for you.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I encourage dabbling in a short hair phase at the
- 7:05Speaker 2: very least, and maybe you'll find out you love it.
- 7:07Speaker 3: But the good news is that your hair is going
- 7:09Speaker 3: to grow back. So what do you have to lose?
- 7:11Speaker 3: Really really not much.
- 7:14Speaker 7: Hi, Emily, my name is Alexandria. Can't wait to see
- 7:17Speaker 7: you in DC. My question is this. I know the
- 7:21Speaker 7: pandemic complicated things, and I know you moved quite a
- 7:23Speaker 7: while ago, but do you have any suggestions for a
- 7:26Speaker 7: person who has moved to a new city and wants
- 7:29Speaker 7: to find things to do in places to meet people.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Thanks, all right, So my recommendation here is going to
- 7:35Speaker 2: be pick up a hobby. It can literally be anything.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Of course, if you're a hurdler, then you've heard about
- 7:39Speaker 2: me talk on the show, read the running groups that
- 7:42Speaker 2: I'm involved in. But maybe you like knitting, or you
- 7:46Speaker 2: like trying new restaurants, or you like a rock climbing,
- 7:50Speaker 2: or you like ballroom dancing, whatever your hobby is. If
- 7:53Speaker 2: you google like your hobby and the city that you're in,
- 7:57Speaker 2: you're going to find a group of people that get
- 7:59Speaker 2: together to do the things. So start with the hobby
- 8:02Speaker 2: and go from there. Also one other tip whenever you
- 8:05Speaker 2: are going to these meetups, be really present there, so
- 8:08Speaker 2: show up, don't be on your phone, Be open and
- 8:11Speaker 2: inviting to meeting other people, and you may be surprised
- 8:14Speaker 2: about the quality relationships you can find and seek when
- 8:18Speaker 2: you are open to seeking them.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Hi, Emily, my name is Olivia. I'm from Toronto, Canada,
- 8:26Speaker 5: high from the North. I have a question for you.
- 8:29Speaker 5: My question is what are some of the ways you
- 8:32Speaker 5: go about not comparing your times like your prs for
- 8:36Speaker 5: the marathon and half marathon etc. Distances to other runners,
- 8:40Speaker 5: because for me, as a runner, I often find myself
- 8:43Speaker 5: comparing my times to people who are similar age to me,
- 8:47Speaker 5: and you know, wondering why I'm not as fast as them.
- 8:50Speaker 5: So what are some ways that you avoid comparison?
- 8:53Speaker 2: Thanks so much, you don't need me to tell you this,
- 8:56Speaker 2: but comparison is the thief of all joy. I know
- 9:00Speaker 2: that that doesn't really help you not do it. But
- 9:03Speaker 2: one way that I kind of get my personal competitiveness
- 9:06Speaker 2: in check is I remind myself of how far I've
- 9:09Speaker 2: come on my journey, and that my journey looks different
- 9:12Speaker 2: from somebody else's journey, and what I have going on
- 9:14Speaker 2: in my life is going to be different than what
- 9:16Speaker 2: they have going on in their life. I find so
- 9:19Speaker 2: much more joy in kind of leveling up on my
- 9:21Speaker 2: own personal accomplishments than I do chasing something that somebody
- 9:26Speaker 2: else has done to each their own though right again,
- 9:29Speaker 2: I know that that might not be super easy. So
- 9:33Speaker 2: in the moments where you find yourself really getting stuck
- 9:36Speaker 2: in that comparison trap, I would encourage you to write
- 9:39Speaker 2: down some of the reasons why you enjoy doing a
- 9:42Speaker 2: certain activity in the first place. When you revisit your why.
- 9:47Speaker 2: You will feel more purposeful with how you execute and
- 9:50Speaker 2: less concerned about how others execute around you. One last
- 9:55Speaker 2: thing on this note, make sure you celebrate yourself. Celebrate
- 9:58Speaker 2: the small wind, celebrate the big win, rate all the things,
- 10:01Speaker 2: especially when it comes to getting active and getting out there.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Starting is just so important.
- 10:05Speaker 2: So make sure that you make the time to commemorate
- 10:09Speaker 2: that you are putting yourself out there and if you're
- 10:11Speaker 2: being active and you're doing something good for you and
- 10:13Speaker 2: your body.
- 10:15Speaker 8: I also had a question regarding your approach to your
- 10:19Speaker 8: privacy settings when it comes to apps that have your data,
- 10:24Speaker 8: such as I use Drava and you know, there's the
- 10:28Speaker 8: maps and it shows streaks and things like that, and
- 10:32Speaker 8: your followers can see your stuff for everyone. Just those
- 10:35Speaker 8: types of settings. Sometimes I know, I get kind of
- 10:38Speaker 8: I guess paranoid ab how my privacy settings, and sometimes
- 10:42Speaker 8: I change them. Other times it doesn't seem to bother me.
- 10:45Speaker 8: So I just didn't know if this is something that
- 10:47Speaker 8: you've dealt with or if you just have any advice
- 10:50Speaker 8: on a good approach to this.
- 10:52Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 10:53Speaker 3: This is a good question and it's really important.
- 10:55Speaker 2: So I recently decided to start hiding my start and
- 10:58Speaker 2: end points on Strava, set your security preferences for whatever
- 11:03Speaker 2: radius makes you feel comfortable. I think within a mile
- 11:06Speaker 2: of where I live, other people won't see my personal map,
- 11:11Speaker 2: so that's one way to protect your privacy. Also, if
- 11:14Speaker 2: I'm going to post my Strava route, I will only
- 11:16Speaker 2: post my Strava route on my social media beyond Strava
- 11:21Speaker 2: if the start and end is nowhere near my apartment.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Something else that you can do in that case if
- 11:27Speaker 2: you do want to share, like a screen grab from
- 11:29Speaker 2: your run, is you can upload other photos so that
- 11:31Speaker 2: the main photo that you're sharing isn't one that shows
- 11:34Speaker 2: your map, and then be really smart about when and
- 11:37Speaker 2: how you're sharing things on social In general, I very
- 11:40Speaker 2: rarely tag a location or a place when I'm physically there,
- 11:45Speaker 2: especially not when I am alone. It always cracks me
- 11:48Speaker 2: up when people reach out to me and I'm on
- 11:50Speaker 2: vacation by myself, and they're.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Like, oh my god, where are you? What are you doing?
- 11:53Speaker 2: And I'm like, we don't actually know each other, although
- 11:57Speaker 2: I appreciate you and I know that you're probably not creepy,
- 11:59Speaker 2: but I'm going to respectfully to client answering this question
- 12:01Speaker 2: in this moment, I digress With this said, it's good
- 12:05Speaker 2: to hear that you're thinking about your privacy and your safety,
- 12:08Speaker 2: and no matter how much we like to boast or
- 12:11Speaker 2: perhaps overshare at times, that should always be priority.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Numero uno, Hi, Emily.
- 12:19Speaker 10: I'm sure you get this question all the time, but
- 12:21Speaker 10: I wanted to ask your advice when it comes to
- 12:26Speaker 10: starting a podcast. What equipment do you need when you
- 12:30Speaker 10: are just testing the waters, just starting out, and you're
- 12:36Speaker 10: not sure if you're ready to infest? What does it
- 12:39Speaker 10: take to get started? And how do you get that
- 12:43Speaker 10: recording from your device to the platform where you're sharing it? Specifically,
- 12:51Speaker 10: what would you use for editing programs? And what platform
- 12:57Speaker 10: can you upload to? And how do you start to
- 13:01Speaker 10: share that content? Thanks so much so.
- 13:05Speaker 2: When you're just starting out and you don't know if
- 13:07Speaker 2: you want to commit to podcasting. This is going to
- 13:10Speaker 2: sound crazy, but recording voice notes on your iPhone if
- 13:14Speaker 2: you're doing solo episodes the microphone or your iPhone is
- 13:17Speaker 2: pretty damn great. With that said, if you do think
- 13:20Speaker 2: of this as something that you have a little money
- 13:22Speaker 2: to invest in, there are plenty of USB microphones A
- 13:26Speaker 2: couple of my favorites include the Blue Yetti microphone and
- 13:29Speaker 2: the Audio Technica microphone. Sure also makes a few low
- 13:34Speaker 2: cost USB microphones, and what that means is a USB
- 13:37Speaker 2: microphone will plug directly into your computer so that you
- 13:39Speaker 2: can use it to record audio. You will need to
- 13:42Speaker 2: record that audio into a program. I personally use Garage Band,
- 13:47Speaker 2: but you could also use Audacity and then from there.
- 13:50Speaker 2: When it comes to hosting platforms, there are a ton
- 13:53Speaker 2: of different options. I use one called Anchor, and Anchor
- 13:56Speaker 2: then automatically distributes your podcast to a bunch of the
- 14:00Speaker 2: different places that you may listen to this podcast.
- 14:03Speaker 3: So I'm talking.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Apple, Spotify, tune In, cast box, you name it. If
- 14:08Speaker 2: you want more info on all things podcasting, I do
- 14:11Speaker 2: have a hurdle session called intro to Podcasting. I will
- 14:14Speaker 2: make sure to link to that in the show notes.
- 14:17Speaker 2: But if you're hesitant about it and you're thinking about it,
- 14:19Speaker 2: I say, why not give it a go? You know,
- 14:22Speaker 2: I was hesitant about starting this at one point, and now,
- 14:25Speaker 2: over five million downloads later, I can confidently say it's
- 14:28Speaker 2: one of the best decisions I have made in my career.
- 14:32Speaker 11: Hi, Emily, It's Alex from New York City. You mentioned
- 14:35Speaker 11: previously that you check in on your goals many times
- 14:40Speaker 11: throughout the year, and one of the things I'm most
- 14:43Speaker 11: interested in, and I hope I'm understanding this correctly. You
- 14:46Speaker 11: mentioned in a previous Instagram story that you do kind
- 14:50Speaker 11: of like many retreats with yourself twice a year to
- 14:53Speaker 11: really deep dive check in with your goals. I'm so
- 14:57Speaker 11: fascinated by this. I would love to learn more about it,
- 15:00Speaker 11: your process, maybe even an example of the last time
- 15:03Speaker 11: you did this.
- 15:04Speaker 12: I'm so interested.
- 15:05Speaker 11: Thank you.
- 15:06Speaker 3: All right, Ale, good question.
- 15:07Speaker 2: This is one of my favorite things that I have
- 15:09Speaker 2: started to do for myself as an entrepreneur. So about
- 15:12Speaker 2: two to three times a year, I do a check
- 15:16Speaker 2: in with myself and I have what I like to
- 15:19Speaker 2: call a personal summit. And there are two rules for
- 15:22Speaker 2: this personal summit. One, it is alone and not in
- 15:26Speaker 2: my own space, so that means that I'm getting out
- 15:28Speaker 2: of my Brooklyn apartment. And two, this summit is completely
- 15:33Speaker 2: dedicated toward thinking about my personal and professional goals. So
- 15:38Speaker 2: I will pick a weekend for this summit of sorts
- 15:41Speaker 2: and I will literally get out of town.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Now.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Admittedly, the first personal summit I did. I actually just
- 15:47Speaker 2: decided to book myself a small conference room at a
- 15:51Speaker 2: hotel nearby and post up there for two days. But
- 15:56Speaker 2: the purpose of this is really just to provide the
- 15:58Speaker 2: space to take an honest mentory. I found that when
- 16:01Speaker 2: I wanted to like program this space, so to speak,
- 16:04Speaker 2: into my regular work week, that I was always making
- 16:07Speaker 2: excuses not to have the check in that I knew
- 16:09Speaker 2: that I wanted to have for myself.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Because other things would just get in the way.
- 16:13Speaker 2: This is probably going to sound pretty type A, but
- 16:16Speaker 2: I also set like different blocks of time to think
- 16:19Speaker 2: over different things or different priorities. Like I mentioned earlier
- 16:22Speaker 2: in this episode that now I have this priority of
- 16:25Speaker 2: thinking about how I can volunteer with younger women and teenagers.
- 16:29Speaker 2: So maybe at my next professional summit, if I haven't
- 16:32Speaker 2: made a lot of headway on this yet, I would
- 16:34Speaker 2: block time at least an hour to do some research
- 16:37Speaker 2: into that to get to where I want to be
- 16:39Speaker 2: because I know that it is something that is meaningful
- 16:42Speaker 2: for me. A big rule for my personal summit meetings
- 16:45Speaker 2: is that social media is a no go.
- 16:47Speaker 3: So typically speaking, my favorite ones.
- 16:50Speaker 2: That I have done have been at those like getaway
- 16:52Speaker 2: cabins in the Catskills, just completely off the grid, doing
- 16:56Speaker 2: my own thing and taking the time again to focus
- 16:59Speaker 2: on me.
- 17:01Speaker 9: Emily.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Hi, my name is Emma.
- 17:04Speaker 13: I'm from Minneapolis, and my question is about the kinds
- 17:08Speaker 13: of things that you do living at home by yourself
- 17:12Speaker 13: in the evenings.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of us are at.
- 17:15Speaker 13: Home more frequently than we usually are lately, so I'm
- 17:17Speaker 13: wondering what kind of things you do when you have
- 17:19Speaker 13: a night to yourself at home that are not Netflix
- 17:23Speaker 13: or reading or just cooking dinner.
- 17:26Speaker 14: Do you have like games that you.
- 17:28Speaker 13: Play alone or anything that just keeps you occupied in
- 17:31Speaker 13: the evenings.
- 17:32Speaker 9: Thanks so much, love the show.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Honestly, the things that you named are kind of what
- 17:37Speaker 2: I do when I'm on my own. I love cooking dinner,
- 17:41Speaker 2: like this is why, and I'm not trying to make
- 17:44Speaker 2: this an ad, but like I love Green Chef because
- 17:47Speaker 2: I love having the opportunity to cook but not having
- 17:51Speaker 2: to think a lot about like what it's going to
- 17:53Speaker 2: be or look into recipes or whatnot. Although I have
- 17:55Speaker 2: a girlfriend who recently started on Sunday nights, like ahead
- 17:59Speaker 2: of Sunday, maybe on Wednesday of the week before and
- 18:02Speaker 2: picking out a recipe that she wants to make, and
- 18:04Speaker 2: her Sunday night ritual now is like diving headfirst into
- 18:07Speaker 2: like a semi complicated recipe.
- 18:09Speaker 3: I think, like last week she made like.
- 18:11Speaker 2: A lobster risotto, and I now want to also make
- 18:14Speaker 2: lobster risotto.
- 18:15Speaker 3: But I digress.
- 18:16Speaker 2: I do love a Netflix and lay kind of situation.
- 18:20Speaker 2: I feel like I'm speaking all day, I'm reading all day.
- 18:24Speaker 3: So it's kind of nice to have these mindless moments.
- 18:26Speaker 2: I'm also really big lately on baths, and I'm also
- 18:30Speaker 2: really big on journaling, which i'll talk about in this
- 18:32Speaker 2: episode shortly. The other thing that I do is I'll
- 18:36Speaker 2: put on a podcast and I'll just lay on my couch.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I'm not really good at napping, so to speak, but
- 18:41Speaker 2: sometimes I just want to rest, and so that's.
- 18:44Speaker 3: A nice way for me to rest and learn and
- 18:46Speaker 3: absorb and.
- 18:47Speaker 12: Just be Hey, Emily, this is Sarah from Boston. I've
- 18:53Speaker 12: been listening for a while and I'm not a runner
- 18:56Speaker 12: at all, but I love the interviews that you get
- 19:00Speaker 12: with inspiring people. My question to you is, how are
- 19:04Speaker 12: you navigating the world of investing. I am in the
- 19:09Speaker 12: boat right now where I'm trying to organize my finances,
- 19:12Speaker 12: and I remember seeing on your Instagram stories that you
- 19:15Speaker 12: also started investing. So what's your strategy? Here are you
- 19:19Speaker 12: meeting with the financial advisor? How is your investing journey going.
- 19:24Speaker 12: I'd love to hear some feedback and some tips.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Okay, So I'm still learning a lot about this, and
- 19:32Speaker 2: I would hardly say that I'm excelling at this just yet.
- 19:36Speaker 2: But I am my choser in the water, like my feet,
- 19:38Speaker 2: both feet are in the pool. I recently, Goodness, I
- 19:42Speaker 2: invested in crypto. I have Bitcoin and Ethereum. I did
- 19:46Speaker 2: it on coinbase. A girlfriend helped me. I kind of
- 19:49Speaker 2: went into it in my mind thinking like, if I
- 19:52Speaker 2: lose this money, it wouldn't be awesome, but it would
- 19:55Speaker 2: be okay, which was the right mindset to go into
- 19:58Speaker 2: it with, because I swear since the that I invested
- 20:01Speaker 2: money in these cryptocurrencies, they have just plummeted.
- 20:05Speaker 3: I digress.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I also have a four to one K and I
- 20:07Speaker 2: have a roth IRA, and I always make sure to
- 20:10Speaker 2: do the max contribution in the IRA every year. I
- 20:14Speaker 2: believe that is something like six thousand dollars total. And
- 20:18Speaker 2: aside from that, this is the year I'm definitely interested
- 20:21Speaker 2: in getting or investing more in individual stocks. I do
- 20:26Speaker 2: have a really great accountant that specializes with working with
- 20:30Speaker 2: people that own small businesses and our ten Onion nine employees,
- 20:34Speaker 2: so that has been really helpful when it comes to
- 20:37Speaker 2: kind of balancing my books and doing my taxes and whatnot.
- 20:40Speaker 2: It's one of the best investments that I've made for
- 20:42Speaker 2: my business. But yeah, aside from that, that's kind of
- 20:45Speaker 2: where I am on the investing front right now. I'm
- 20:48Speaker 2: super interested in making smarter investments and really invested in
- 20:54Speaker 2: talking to individuals in this space so that I can
- 20:56Speaker 2: learn more, so much so that I actually have an epist.
- 21:00Speaker 2: So coming down the pipe soon with Jacqueline Johnson. She
- 21:03Speaker 2: is known by many as the co founder of Create
- 21:06Speaker 2: and Cultivate. She also recently started a VC fund called
- 21:11Speaker 2: New Money Ventures. So we're going to talk a lot
- 21:13Speaker 2: about that investing and all that stuff, so hopefully you
- 21:16Speaker 2: will find it extremely helpful.
- 21:19Speaker 14: Hi, Emily, it's Fee here from Nottingham Share in the UK.
- 21:24Speaker 14: I wanted to ask you about journaling because I know
- 21:27Speaker 14: you're a big advocate of it. What's the best way
- 21:31Speaker 14: to get started? What time of day do you do it?
- 21:35Speaker 14: Do you do it every day? What are your journaling
- 21:39Speaker 14: top tips? Thank you bye?
- 21:42Speaker 3: We love international hurdlers.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Hey, I was literally just having a conversation like twenty
- 21:47Speaker 2: minutes ago about the London Marathon this year, which I'm hoping.
- 21:50Speaker 3: It will be well enough to finally check off of
- 21:53Speaker 3: my bucket list.
- 21:53Speaker 2: It is in the plans right now, so hopefully I'm
- 21:56Speaker 2: going to see you fee when I come over away journaling.
- 22:00Speaker 2: You know, I love journaling. For me, my journaling practice
- 22:04Speaker 2: is in every morning thing. I use Baron Fag notebooks.
- 22:07Speaker 2: I'm obsessed with them. I will link to them in.
- 22:10Speaker 3: The show notes.
- 22:11Speaker 2: And I wake up, I make mine espresso while an
- 22:16Speaker 2: espresso makes, I make my bed, I walk back into
- 22:19Speaker 2: the kitchen, I take mine espresso. I walk to my
- 22:22Speaker 2: couch area where now I decided to start keeping my journal,
- 22:26Speaker 2: like under my coffee table, and that's where I journal,
- 22:29Speaker 2: and I write one page every single day, just kind
- 22:32Speaker 2: of like recapping the past twenty four hours, and then
- 22:34Speaker 2: I end every single page with a highlight like something
- 22:38Speaker 2: good that I'm grateful for from the past today. And
- 22:42Speaker 2: this is just like the journaling style that's working for
- 22:44Speaker 2: me at the moment. But I've definitely tried some other
- 22:47Speaker 2: techniques before, whether that be like a one line a
- 22:50Speaker 2: day journal or a guided journal.
- 22:51Speaker 3: There are a lot of really good options in that avenue.
- 22:54Speaker 2: I know that a lot of people really like the
- 22:56Speaker 2: five minute journal, but the most beneficial journal tactic or
- 23:00Speaker 2: technique is the one that you're going to stick with, right,
- 23:03Speaker 2: So maybe mine feels a little overwhelming to you, and
- 23:06Speaker 2: that's okay. I actually also have like another smaller journaling practice.
- 23:10Speaker 2: When I sit down to my desk every morning with
- 23:11Speaker 2: my AG one, I open up a notebook and I
- 23:14Speaker 2: write down like two to three things that I am
- 23:17Speaker 2: grateful for. So I write down one highlight slash one
- 23:20Speaker 2: thing I'm grateful for early in the morning before I
- 23:23Speaker 2: work out, and then a couple hours later, right when
- 23:25Speaker 2: I get to my desk, I like to kick start
- 23:27Speaker 2: my work day by writing down two to three more
- 23:29Speaker 2: things that I have gratitude for. And that doesn't need
- 23:32Speaker 2: to be like something that happened in the last twenty
- 23:35Speaker 2: four hours.
- 23:35Speaker 3: That can just be something generic.
- 23:37Speaker 2: I think today I wrote down I am grateful for
- 23:40Speaker 2: the soft sweater that I am wearing, and I am
- 23:43Speaker 2: grateful that I have the financial means to go to
- 23:46Speaker 2: a concert. I actually went to see John Mayer this week,
- 23:49Speaker 2: which was super, super super awesome. But journaling, do what
- 23:53Speaker 2: feels right for you and try out some different modalities
- 23:56Speaker 2: like try out some different methods of journaling and you'll
- 23:58Speaker 2: find one that feels like it's best in your routine.
- 24:02Speaker 15: Hi, Emily, my name is Lisa. I'm calling you from
- 24:05Speaker 15: the great state of Maine. I've been a Hurdle listener
- 24:08Speaker 15: for the past couple of years now, and I wanted
- 24:10Speaker 15: to start by thanking you for all the light that
- 24:13Speaker 15: you bring into the world. I love sharing little snippets
- 24:17Speaker 15: of your podcast with my students as they try to
- 24:21Speaker 15: find their own way in this world. I'm a middle
- 24:24Speaker 15: school teacher and my question has to do with where
- 24:29Speaker 15: you saw your life headed when you were in college.
- 24:34Speaker 15: Did you think that you'd be hosting a show like this.
- 24:37Speaker 15: I know that you went into journalism and writing, and
- 24:41Speaker 15: I just didn't know if Hurdle was something that you
- 24:45Speaker 15: imagined and manifested or was it something that was a
- 24:50Speaker 15: culmination of a lot of other activities.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I again I mentioned the teen teenage Women Front Young
- 25:00Speaker 2: woman Front. It means the world to me to be
- 25:02Speaker 2: able to help them and of course be able to
- 25:05Speaker 2: do some good for everyone in this community. But it's
- 25:08Speaker 2: really resonating with me lately that I want to get
- 25:11Speaker 2: more involved in that space. So I appreciate you for
- 25:13Speaker 2: sharing some of the work that I'm doing with your students.
- 25:16Speaker 3: And I'm happy about that.
- 25:17Speaker 2: I when it comes to what I'm doing now, I mean,
- 25:20Speaker 2: I never thought that I would have a podcast. I
- 25:23Speaker 2: think when I was in college, especially like podcasts weren't
- 25:26Speaker 2: really a big thing.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Blogging was a big thing.
- 25:30Speaker 2: But I definitely saw myself living and working in New
- 25:33Speaker 2: York City. I saw myself being a journalist. I dreamed
- 25:37Speaker 2: of living that like Carrie Bradshaw life. I have this
- 25:41Speaker 2: signboard in my office that maybe if you follow me
- 25:44Speaker 2: on Instagram you've seen before that says, remember what when
- 25:47Speaker 2: you wanted what you have now? And I truly did
- 25:51Speaker 2: really want this growing up. I wanted to have my
- 25:54Speaker 2: own place and be independent and work diligently in a career,
- 25:57Speaker 2: although I definitely thought that career would be rooted and
- 26:02Speaker 2: not waiver from being in women's magazine. So it's fun,
- 26:07Speaker 2: it's fun to have this different path now. It's exciting
- 26:10Speaker 2: to see where I'm going, and I am happy that
- 26:13Speaker 2: I get to learn and talk to interesting people along
- 26:16Speaker 2: the way.
- 26:17Speaker 7: Hi Emily, this is Claire from Brooklyn.
- 26:20Speaker 9: Hope you're doing well.
- 26:22Speaker 7: I just wanted to know if there are any online
- 26:24Speaker 7: fitness classes that you're loving right now and why.
- 26:28Speaker 15: Thank you so much and hope you have a great day.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Hi Claire.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I love when MYRL friends pretend that they're not my
- 26:36Speaker 2: IRL friends and call in to the show. Online fitness classes,
- 26:40Speaker 2: I mean, honestly, the ones that I use the most
- 26:44Speaker 2: are peloton classes. I have the bike in my apartment
- 26:49Speaker 2: and I'll take some sporadic strength at different times, but
- 26:53Speaker 2: other than that, for a while, I was really big
- 26:56Speaker 2: into the class. I've had some of their people on
- 26:58Speaker 2: the show as well. I loved those conversations with Natalie
- 27:02Speaker 2: and Taren. Otherwise, all of my fitness consumption is with
- 27:07Speaker 2: running and the future app at least for the time being.
- 27:12Speaker 9: Hi Emily, this is Nilsha. I come from Iran and
- 27:16Speaker 9: I live in Dubai. I love your show so much.
- 27:20Speaker 9: I always loved the idea of running, but I've never
- 27:23Speaker 9: tried it. Recently, I've tried running on a treadmill but
- 27:28Speaker 9: I couldn't find the confidence in me to go for
- 27:32Speaker 9: a run outside. It's so out of my comfort zone.
- 27:36Speaker 9: What is your advice for me on how I can
- 27:39Speaker 9: start adding a short run even to my daily routine.
- 27:45Speaker 9: Thank you so much for all the work you do
- 27:48Speaker 9: and all the content that you produce. I love you,
- 27:51Speaker 9: And thanks.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Oh, I love you. That was so sweet. Thank you
- 27:58Speaker 3: for listening from so far away from where I right now.
- 28:01Speaker 2: I understand what it feels like to feel really intimidated
- 28:05Speaker 2: and self conscious to run outside. And I think the
- 28:09Speaker 2: first step to getting comfortable with this is recognizing that
- 28:15Speaker 2: most people go through a point in their lives where
- 28:18Speaker 2: they feel this way as well, So you are not
- 28:21Speaker 2: alone in feeling like that once you recognize that. For me,
- 28:28Speaker 2: the key to getting comfortable with being outside and running
- 28:32Speaker 2: outside and kind of putting myself out there was to
- 28:34Speaker 2: start small. So when I started my love affair with running,
- 28:40Speaker 2: I ran walked a half mile every day and I
- 28:44Speaker 2: was only outside for a total of like fourteen minutes
- 28:48Speaker 2: every day, but it helped me develop a habit. So
- 28:51Speaker 2: don't compare your progress to anybody else's progress. Start small,
- 28:56Speaker 2: Know that you're not alone, and how you feel and
- 29:00Speaker 2: keep track of your progress, like write down how this
- 29:03Speaker 2: experience is going for you and make sure to celebrate
- 29:07Speaker 2: your small ones.
- 29:08Speaker 3: I'm here if you need me.
- 29:11Speaker 16: Hi, Emily, this is Jens from Queens, New York. I'm
- 29:14Speaker 16: a huge fan of your podcast and I sometimes even
- 29:16Speaker 16: listen to you with my teenage daughter as you have
- 29:19Speaker 16: such positive and real messages about getting over hurdles. My
- 29:23Speaker 16: question today is about your nighttime routine. I love listening
- 29:26Speaker 16: to the episode about becoming a morning person and all
- 29:29Speaker 16: the helpful tips you gave. In that episode, you talked
- 29:32Speaker 16: about how it all starts the night before, So wondering
- 29:34Speaker 16: if you can share your nighttime routine and what that
- 29:37Speaker 16: looks like post your work hours.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Okay, nighttime routine, I'm not gonna lie.
- 29:42Speaker 2: My nighttime routine is not as homed in, like dialed
- 29:45Speaker 2: in as my morning routine.
- 29:47Speaker 3: I feel like the morning routine is on lock.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Nighttime routine really varies on how tired I am when
- 29:53Speaker 2: I'm ready to call it a night. If it's like
- 29:55Speaker 2: a casual night at home, I'm better just sticking at this.
- 29:58Speaker 3: I'm really working. I'm getting good with my skincare.
- 30:02Speaker 2: So my new thing is that I'll like do the
- 30:05Speaker 2: whole like face situation, skincare situation, like twenty minutes before
- 30:10Speaker 2: I'm actually getting ready to go to bed, so that
- 30:12Speaker 2: all of my products have time to like seep in
- 30:14Speaker 2: a little bit, and I'm not lying down with like
- 30:16Speaker 2: stuff on.
- 30:17Speaker 3: My face, so that looks like a facewash.
- 30:21Speaker 2: One of like the eight thousand serums that are in
- 30:23Speaker 2: my cabinet that I don't have a rhyme or reason
- 30:25Speaker 2: onto how I'm using. Really, I should reference that episode
- 30:29Speaker 2: that I did with Rene Rollo.
- 30:30Speaker 3: I'll put it in the show notes, but she had
- 30:31Speaker 3: a lot of really great tips in there. And then
- 30:35Speaker 3: after that, I put.
- 30:36Speaker 2: My phone on Do Not Disturbed starting at around eight o'clock.
- 30:39Speaker 2: So that way, anyone that I'm communicating with, like in
- 30:42Speaker 2: the hours leading up to when I'm actually crashing, it's
- 30:45Speaker 2: very intentional. I just want to protect my space, my
- 30:50Speaker 2: mental energy. That way. I was at the very beginning
- 30:53Speaker 2: of this year reading ten pages a day before I
- 30:55Speaker 2: went to bed. That routine has kind of fallen by
- 30:58Speaker 2: the wayside, if that's the right expression. But it was
- 31:02Speaker 2: something that I really liked, so I'd like to get
- 31:04Speaker 2: back into that. And then outside of that, Beam Dream
- 31:08Speaker 2: is a really a big part of my time routine.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I think I talked about this in the Morning episode
- 31:11Speaker 2: as well. But it's like a cinnamon tasting hot chocolate
- 31:13Speaker 2: that has rischi elthianine, magnesium, melatonin and their NANOCBD. And
- 31:19Speaker 2: it's great because I'll drink that about ninety minutes before
- 31:22Speaker 2: I crash, which has like seems to be the perfect
- 31:25Speaker 2: timing for me, and I'll just sleep through the night,
- 31:28Speaker 2: which is it. You don't realize I think how often
- 31:30Speaker 2: you wake up during the night until you have a
- 31:33Speaker 2: night or a string of nights as a result of
- 31:37Speaker 2: me incorporating beam Dream into the routine where you don't
- 31:40Speaker 2: wake up, and it just makes the biggest difference. And
- 31:43Speaker 2: I'll even see on my whoop strap that drinking beam
- 31:47Speaker 2: has me, uh, with less disruptions through my sleep, so
- 31:52Speaker 2: to speak. I obviously should tell you that you can
- 31:54Speaker 2: get up to thirty five percent off of your first
- 31:56Speaker 2: month a beam Dream if you head on over to
- 31:59Speaker 2: be organics dot com. That's B E A M O
- 32:02Speaker 2: R G A N I c S dot com slash hurdle.
- 32:07Speaker 2: And also you can get fifteen percent off everything else
- 32:09Speaker 2: in the store. So that's one of my secret sauces
- 32:12Speaker 2: to my nighttime routine, and it helps me also like
- 32:15Speaker 2: not eat a ton of desserts. I would be remiss
- 32:18Speaker 2: if I didn't say that I have at least one
- 32:21Speaker 2: Mini Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate peanut butter cup every single night.
- 32:26Speaker 3: It is like my crypt night. I'm obsessed with them,
- 32:30Speaker 3: but just one or two. It's my little thing. It's
- 32:33Speaker 3: the thing that I do.
- 32:34Speaker 2: But the Beam dream Reeses Pebe Well Trader Joe's Pebe
- 32:38Speaker 2: Cup combo ten out of ten would recommend.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Hey, m Caitlin. Here, my question has absolutely nothing to
- 32:47Speaker 1: do with running or working out or athletic greens or
- 32:52Speaker 1: your favorite little lemon pants or the best thing that
- 32:56Speaker 1: you've eaten over the last few weeks. Here's my question.
- 33:00Speaker 1: How are yes? Friend? What's going on? Talk to me, Caitlin?
- 33:04Speaker 3: Why does this question make me want to cry?
- 33:06Speaker 6: Well?
- 33:06Speaker 2: First I literally lolled, but then it literally like makes
- 33:10Speaker 2: me emotional. And this was not the first question that
- 33:13Speaker 2: came in like this.
- 33:15Speaker 17: Hi, Emily, my name is Derek. I'm a longtime listener
- 33:17Speaker 17: of yours. I just want to call in and ask
- 33:21Speaker 17: how are you, Like, seriously, how are you doing? Mentally, physically, emotionally.
- 33:25Speaker 17: We've all been through a lot over the last two years.
- 33:27Speaker 17: So I just want to check in and see how
- 33:28Speaker 17: you doing. Thanks.
- 33:29Speaker 3: Should I be dating Derek? I just had a lot
- 33:34Speaker 3: of the one man to call in today.
- 33:36Speaker 2: To be honest, there were probably five questions that came
- 33:39Speaker 2: in asking me how I'm doing. And it's not surprising
- 33:44Speaker 2: to me that I believe that you teach people how
- 33:48Speaker 2: to treat you, and I would hope that through the
- 33:52Speaker 2: messaging that I put out on social media and just
- 33:54Speaker 2: the way that I speak here on the show, that
- 33:57Speaker 2: you know that.
- 33:58Speaker 3: It's okay to be vulnerable with me, like I work
- 34:01Speaker 3: to be vulnerable with you.
- 34:02Speaker 2: And I have said over the last few weeks that
- 34:05Speaker 2: I've been just kind of navigating some stuff that I'm
- 34:08Speaker 2: not completely ready to share here. I don't know if
- 34:12Speaker 2: I ever necessarily will share everything here, but the things
- 34:16Speaker 2: that I am going through, I'm certain and I know
- 34:19Speaker 2: that I'm not alone in the hurdles that I'm kind
- 34:24Speaker 2: of working through at the moment. Some of them are
- 34:28Speaker 2: extremely personal, which is why I'm kind of protecting that space.
- 34:31Speaker 2: But I had a really beautiful conversation with my life
- 34:34Speaker 2: coach about the struggle that I feel about kind of
- 34:38Speaker 2: going through things that I am navigating offline right the
- 34:42Speaker 2: things that I'm not speaking about on the show, and
- 34:43Speaker 2: being such a person that is okay with vulnerability, like
- 34:47Speaker 2: how that feels and how I kind of feel like
- 34:49Speaker 2: I'm not being super authentic. And she said something that
- 34:52Speaker 2: really resonated with me that my vulnerability in itself is
- 34:58Speaker 2: a way to connect with other people. So whereas I
- 35:01Speaker 2: may feel some sense of guilt about not giving all
- 35:04Speaker 2: of the details about everything that's going on, the fact
- 35:08Speaker 2: that I'm willing to say something like I'm not doing
- 35:11Speaker 2: the best right now that is a big deal because
- 35:15Speaker 2: so often we are surrounded with this messaging that like
- 35:17Speaker 2: everything's gotta be okay, and like you're surrounded by the
- 35:21Speaker 2: highlight reel and everyone seems to be thriving, and we
- 35:24Speaker 2: feel as though when we're going through something that we're
- 35:26Speaker 2: the only person that's trudging through the mud.
- 35:27Speaker 3: And that is just not it.
- 35:30Speaker 2: And I also know the importance of reiterating that just
- 35:33Speaker 2: because you're going through a hard time doesn't mean that
- 35:35Speaker 2: you can't have good moments within the chaos. I'm going
- 35:39Speaker 2: to say that one more time, just because you are
- 35:41Speaker 2: going through a hard time doesn't mean that that is
- 35:44Speaker 2: like the sole fact in your existence. So right now,
- 35:47Speaker 2: I can feel as though I am going through a
- 35:50Speaker 2: rough patch, but that doesn't mean that I cannot seek
- 35:53Speaker 2: and find joy in my day to day. There are
- 35:56Speaker 2: going to be moments where life feels like it's at
- 35:58Speaker 2: one hundred, and they are to be other moments where
- 36:01Speaker 2: life feels like a strong sub fifty. But the opportunity
- 36:05Speaker 2: that I have is to seek joy and embrace both
- 36:10Speaker 2: and learn from both. And so I encourage you, like
- 36:14Speaker 2: wherever you are in your journey, whatever it is that
- 36:16Speaker 2: you are going through, to recognize that and to have
- 36:20Speaker 2: some grace with yourself and know that you don't need
- 36:22Speaker 2: to do anything that you don't want to do before
- 36:24Speaker 2: you're ready to do it. You get to make that call.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Who deep breath, deep breath physically, let's chuck and there
- 36:35Speaker 2: real quick. I'm feeling okay. Running's been going pretty okay lately.
- 36:39Speaker 2: I am feeling a little like blaw in my body.
- 36:42Speaker 2: I think this is like the winter moment that a
- 36:44Speaker 2: lot of us experience with hibernation and whatnot. But I
- 36:48Speaker 2: have the tools that I need to feel better in
- 36:51Speaker 2: my body and I'm working on it, and I have
- 36:53Speaker 2: fish defrosting and refrigerator right now, and I'm going to
- 36:56Speaker 2: make myself a healthy dinner and eat good things and
- 37:00Speaker 2: treat myself well. And I encourage all of you to
- 37:05Speaker 2: shake up some ag one and do the same.
- 37:07Speaker 3: You are welcome, Caitlin oh Man.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Okay, thirty five minutes of listener questions. I'm going to
- 37:15Speaker 2: fall back respectfully right now, but I do have so
- 37:18Speaker 2: many more, and I promise you they are not forgotten.
- 37:22Speaker 2: I will be answering them in upcoming episodes of Five
- 37:26Speaker 2: Minute Friday. And if you sent one today or maybe
- 37:29Speaker 2: you didn't make this a thing, I want to answer
- 37:32Speaker 2: your questions and I would love to do these listener
- 37:35Speaker 2: question episodes more often, and to do them, I need
- 37:39Speaker 2: your input, I need your feedback.
- 37:41Speaker 3: I need your questions.
- 37:42Speaker 2: So if you want to leave me a question, a
- 37:45Speaker 2: voice message, you want to interact with me, hit me up.
- 37:48Speaker 2: The link to do so is in the show notes.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Make sure you're falling along with the show. Over at
- 37:53Speaker 2: Hurdle Podcast. I'm over at Emily A Badi. I just
- 37:56Speaker 2: want to let you know I appreciate the hell out
- 38:00Speaker 2: foll of you, thank you, thank you.
