A teen in central North Carolina is critically ill after contracting a rare, deadly amoeba called Naegleria fowleri — found in warm freshwater like lakes and rivers. Unlike foodborne infections, this one enters through the nose during diving or jumping, causing rapid-onset brain inflammation known as PAM.
