- Lucas: Hey, Luna. Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas! Ready for another tiny lesson. Lucas: Absolutely. So today, I thought we'd go somewhere we all go — the supermarket. Luna: Oh, I love grocery shopping. But in German, that's... der Supermarkt? Lucas: Exactly. Der Supermarkt. Let's say it together: der Supermarkt. Luna: Der Supermarkt. Lucas: Perfect. So if you want to say 'I am going to the supermarket,' it's 'Ich gehe zum Supermarkt.' But we'll keep it simple today. Our first phrase: 'Wie viel kostet das?' Luna: Wie viel kostet das? That means 'How much does that cost?' Lucas: Right. Wie viel — how much. Kostet — costs. Das — that. So: Wie viel kostet das? Luna: Wie viel kostet das? Lucas: Good. Now imagine you're at the supermarket and you point to an apple. You say: 'Wie viel kostet das?' Luna: Wie viel kostet das? And the cashier might say 'Das kostet zwei Euro.' Lucas: Exactly! So our second phrase: 'Das kostet... Euro.' For example, 'Das kostet zwei Euro.' Luna: Das kostet zwei Euro. So if it's five euros: 'Das kostet fünf Euro.' Lucas: You got it. Let's practice both together. I'll be the cashier. You ask: 'Wie viel kostet das?' I'll answer: 'Das kostet drei Euro.' Luna: Wie viel kostet das? Lucas: Das kostet drei Euro. Luna: Nice! So that's how you ask and answer about price. Lucas: Exactly. Now one more useful thing. Often at the checkout, you might need a bag. In German, 'bag' is 'die Tüte'. But you say 'Ich brauche eine Tüte.' Luna: Ich brauche eine Tüte. 'I need a bag.' Lucas: Yes. Brauche comes from brauchen — to need. Eine Tüte — a bag. So: Ich brauche eine Tüte. Luna: Ich brauche eine Tüte. Lucas, I think I've got these. Can we try a little scene? Lucas: Let's do it. I'm the cashier. You're at the supermarket. Luna: Okay. Wie viel kostet das? Lucas: Das kostet vier Euro. Luna: Ich brauche eine Tüte. Lucas: Perfect! You just did a whole supermarket interaction in German. Luna: That felt really good. So let me review: der Supermarkt, Wie viel kostet das?, Das kostet... Euro, Ich brauche eine Tüte. Lucas: You've got it. Let's say them all one more time. Repeat after me: der Supermarkt. Luna: der Supermarkt. Lucas: Wie viel kostet das? Luna: Wie viel kostet das? Lucas: Das kostet fünf Euro. Luna: Das kostet fünf Euro. Lucas: Ich brauche eine Tüte. Luna: Ich brauche eine Tüte. Lucas: Fantastic. Thanks for joining us on Learn German with Fexingo. Keep practicing these phrases, and next time you're at the supermarket, try using them. Luna: Yes! And remember, you can always find more episodes on Fexingo. Bis bald! Lucas: Bis bald, everyone!
