- 2:02Speaker 2: in the mid-90s. Clear, muggy, warm tonight. Lows in the mid-70s.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Heat index close to 110 tomorrow with an actual temperature
- 2:09Speaker 2: in the upper 90s. And with that, heat could come
- 2:11Speaker 2: a late day. shower, thunderstorm, cloudy on Friday, some showers
- 2:14Speaker 2: and storms around. Have to keep a close eye on
- 2:16Speaker 2: that for high school football on Friday night. Temps are
- 2:18Speaker 2: going to be in the low 90s, Labor Day weekend,
- 2:21Speaker 2: showers and storms, but we may see a break in

- 2:36Speaker 2: He's been named the Director of Strategic Initiatives for We're
- 2:39Speaker 2: in Vantage Valley. He's going to be doing this later
- 2:41Speaker 2: this morning in the General Construction Studios. I want to
- 2:43Speaker 2: welcome to the show now the executive director, the dude
- 2:45Speaker 2: in charge of Festival. It's your good buddy, Zach Harreld.
- 2:48Speaker 2: How you doing, man?
- 2:49Speaker 1: Thanks for having me, Dave. I'm doing great, man.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I got to give you your props. I knew that
- 2:54Speaker 2: you were a musician, but I'd never actually heard you
- 2:56Speaker 2: play or sing. I just happened to catch a clip online.
- 3:02Speaker 6: Really?
- 3:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Uh-oh.
- 3:03Speaker 2: It was on your Facebook page, I think.
- 3:05Speaker 7: Okay.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Well, I guess I have no one to blame but me.
- 3:07Speaker 2: You're actually pretty good. I mean, I shouldn't be surprised.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I mean, you're a jack of all trades, do a
- 3:13Speaker 2: lot of different things.
- 3:14Speaker 1: A jack of all trades.
- 3:14Speaker 2: A jack of all trades as you are. But you're
- 3:16Speaker 2: pretty good.
- 3:17Speaker 8: I grew up playing. All my family on the Herald
- 3:22Speaker 8: side are musicians. My grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher and
- 3:25Speaker 8: a guitar picker and Passed it.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Down to his kids.
- 3:28Speaker 8: They had a family band that traveled all over West Virginia.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Like the Partridge family.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Sort of, except they only played in Pentecostal churches. Gotcha.
- 3:36Speaker 8: No, they asked my grandfather one time if he handled snakes.
- 3:38Speaker 8: He said, I sure do, with the end of a hoe.
- 3:41Speaker 8: He's not that kind.
- 3:42Speaker 2: But, yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 8: Grew up playing in church, and they gave me a
- 3:47Speaker 8: mandolin when my hands were big enough to hold it,
- 3:49Speaker 8: and that was my first instrument.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Well, that's cool, man.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I mean, that's really good stuff.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 3:54Speaker 2: You and I had, I think you mentioned it once before,
- 3:56Speaker 2: but I never actually heard you, you know.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I appreciate that.
- 4:01Speaker 2: What it was was I had to go to your
- 4:02Speaker 2: Facebook page because when I was making my notes, doing
- 4:04Speaker 2: everything for the online stuff, I wanted to make sure
- 4:06Speaker 2: I had Festivale. Spelled correctly. That's what it was. I
- 4:09Speaker 2: appreciate that, too. Well, making sure I had the capital
- 4:13Speaker 2: letters where they're supposed to be.
- 4:16Speaker 8: Got a little bluegrass band playing some original tunes, too.
- 4:20Speaker 8: We call it Crawford and Ashby. It's named after the
- 4:23Speaker 8: holding company that owned our hometown, Ashford, over in Boone County.
- 4:26Speaker 8: I know Ashford very well. And we play around town
- 4:29Speaker 8: a little bit. I'll holler at you next time we
- 4:31Speaker 8: got a gig.
- 4:32Speaker 9: All right.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Sounds good. Just make it a matinee because I go
- 4:34Speaker 2: to bed at 8 o'clock.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Deal. Can you do that? Deal.
- 4:37Speaker 10: All right.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So let's talk about FestiFall.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 4:40Speaker 8: Coming September the 29th, really. We're calling that FestiFall Eve
- 4:45Speaker 8: through October the 4th. We got six days of some
- 4:50Speaker 8: really exciting events. I jokingly say I know that we've
- 4:55Speaker 8: done a good job if I give people FOMO, fear
- 4:59Speaker 8: of missing out. If we have so many things, you
- 5:03Speaker 8: can't go to everything you want.
- 5:05Speaker 1: That we've done a good job. All right.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Let's go over what some of those things are.
- 5:09Speaker 8: Well, so on Festive Fall Eve, September 29th, I'm really
- 5:13Speaker 8: excited about this. Anne Magnuson, Hollywood actress.
- 5:17Speaker 2: World-renowned actress.
- 5:18Speaker 1: World-renowned.
- 5:20Speaker 8: TV and film and everything else is doing a brand-new
- 5:23Speaker 8: cabaret show at the Empty Glass over on the East End.
- 5:27Speaker 8: And she already has plans to take this thing on
- 5:30Speaker 8: the road. She's going to have it in L.A.
- 5:33Speaker 1: In January.
- 5:34Speaker 2: That's the real L.A., not Logan area.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Right, right.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Or Lower Ashford, as we call it.
- 5:39Speaker 8: Los Angeles in January, eventually New York. But she wanted
- 5:43Speaker 8: to debut it in Charleston, West Virginia, where so much
- 5:46Speaker 8: of her art is. So that's 7 to 9 p.m.
- 5:50Speaker 8: On September the 29th, two shows. 7 to 9.30, I'm sorry.
- 5:54Speaker 2: That's at the Empty Glass, right?
- 5:55Speaker 1: At the Empty Glass.
- 5:56Speaker 8: And you can get your tickets at festivefall.com for a
- 5:59Speaker 8: whopping $ 10 apiece.
- 6:01Speaker 1: That's a deal.
- 6:02Speaker 2: That's a deal.
- 6:02Speaker 8: That's a way we like to do things. And then
- 6:04Speaker 8: the next night, we have our Three Things Speaker Series,
- 6:06Speaker 8: which you are very familiar with.
- 6:08Speaker 11: Mm-hmm.
- 6:08Speaker 8: Uh, that's going to be a cool show. We've got, um,
- 6:10Speaker 8: Callie Weston, local artist. We've got chef Mandy gum from
- 6:13Speaker 8: Carver career Institute. Have you ever crossed paths with her?
- 6:15Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Carver has an amazing culinary.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Oh, they do. I know that for a fact, every.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Restaurant in the Valley has benefited from that.
- 6:22Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 6:23Speaker 8: Uh, Mandy's head of that and, and has such great
- 6:26Speaker 8: stories to tell. And then Renee Margosi, who is the
- 6:29Speaker 8: outgoing executive director of the West Virginia creative network, formerly
- 6:32Speaker 8: the Tamarack foundation. She's going to be on there. Um,
- 6:36Speaker 8: That'll be a great show. That's Wednesday, September 30th at
- 6:39Speaker 8: 7 p.m. at the Capital Market. Again, ticketsfestival.com. This next
- 6:46Speaker 8: one is going to be, I think.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Really popular.
- 6:47Speaker 8: Our inaugural festival podcast. FestiFall Popcorn Social.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:53Speaker 8: We're doing that in collaboration with our friends at the
- 6:56Speaker 8: West Virginia International Film Festival over at Goldenrod.
- 7:00Speaker 1: On the west side.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Have you been there? No, I have not.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Fantastic little breakfast restaurant.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Got to make it over there.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Got a nice garden out back.
- 7:06Speaker 8: That's where we're going to do a free screening of
- 7:09Speaker 8: Practical Magic since, you know, it's going to be getting
- 7:11Speaker 8: on Halloween time. We're going to have free snacks for everybody,
- 7:15Speaker 8: some live music, some unique vendors, and then the Elk
- 7:18Speaker 8: City Popcorn Company, which is next door.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 7:20Speaker 8: We'll also be selling some of their specialty popcorn. That's
- 7:23Speaker 8: at 7 p.m. on October the 1st. And that one
- 7:26Speaker 8: is free. October the 2nd, that Friday night, a lot
- 7:30Speaker 8: of great stuff going on. We have an evening with
- 7:31Speaker 8: the poets, which will feature West Virginia Poet Laureate Mark
- 7:34Speaker 8: Harshman and his guest Jane Hicks at Taylor Books. That's
- 7:38Speaker 8: a free event. But something I'm really jazzed for is
- 7:43Speaker 8: this program we're doing that night at 7 p.m., Stories
- 7:46Speaker 8: Between Worlds. This is at Poomsey's.com. awesome little all-ages venue
- 7:52Speaker 8: on the west side um we have a musician named
- 7:55Speaker 8: chenobe he's uh born in uganda he currently lives in
- 7:59Speaker 8: ashville north carolina but he plays these traditional east african
- 8:03Speaker 8: instruments um thumb pianos and ugandan harps and and don't
- 8:08Speaker 8: get a lot of that in boom county not a
- 8:10Speaker 8: whole lot of it i'm telling you what man like
- 8:13Speaker 8: words kind of fail me to describe the music that
- 8:15Speaker 8: this guy makes. The best thing you can do is
- 8:17Speaker 8: look him up on, on YouTube. It's, he's one of
- 8:19Speaker 8: the most phenomenal musicians I've ever heard in my life.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Okay.
- 8:22Speaker 8: And he, he weaves that, uh, music, uh, the, the,
- 8:25Speaker 8: the instrumentation and the singing together with storytelling and, and
- 8:29Speaker 8: history of these things.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I think it's going to be just magic.
- 8:33Speaker 8: Um, and then September, uh, or I'm sorry, October the 3rd, uh,
- 8:39Speaker 8: That weekend, Saturday, we're really getting kicked into high gear.
- 8:42Speaker 8: We have the Harvest Art Fair, which is going to
- 8:44Speaker 8: be over there at the Capital Market from 10 a.m.
- 8:46Speaker 1: To 6 p.m.
- 8:47Speaker 8: We're going to have over 30 vendors selling their wares
- 8:49Speaker 8: over there. We're going to have a full schedule of
- 8:52Speaker 8: live music all day, completely free.
- 8:55Speaker 1: There's walking tours. There's yoga. There's a bike tour. We're
- 8:59Speaker 1: doing a new program.
- 9:01Speaker 8: Also that day called Dance Bus, our friend Sean from KRT,
- 9:05Speaker 8: he said, let's do something. And I put him to
- 9:10Speaker 8: the test. KRT has those art buses I'm sure you've
- 9:13Speaker 8: seen driving around. That's a collaboration between Festival and the
- 9:17Speaker 8: city's Office of Public Art where we get local artists
- 9:20Speaker 8: to design a wrap for a bus.
- 9:24Speaker 1: We're going to take one of those art buses.
- 9:25Speaker 8: And we're going to load it full of dancers from
- 9:28Speaker 8: the West Virginia Dance Company, the state's only professional touring
- 9:31Speaker 8: dance company, and attendees. And they're going to go on
- 9:35Speaker 8: a five-stop tour of public art installations around downtown. And
- 9:39Speaker 8: at every one, everybody files off the bus. The dancers
- 9:42Speaker 8: are going to perform a piece based on that art.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And then back on the bus to the next stop.
- 9:47Speaker 8: And then it's going to have its grand finale at
- 9:50Speaker 8: City Center at Slack Plaza. just in time for the
- 9:53Speaker 8: next thing that night City Center Dead John Ingram's tribute
- 9:56Speaker 8: to the music of the Grateful Dead that's always a
- 10:00Speaker 8: great party. This year he's going to have Jake Brownstein
- 10:04Speaker 8: of the jam band Eggie and Jason Hahn of the
- 10:07Speaker 8: String Cheese Incident, another great jam band. Not like household names,
- 10:12Speaker 8: but in the jam band world, those are big deals.
- 10:15Speaker 8: And that's another free event. 7 p.m. at City Center
- 10:19Speaker 8: at Slack Plaza, City Center Dead. That's presented with our
- 10:22Speaker 8: friends at Arts Amplified.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I mean, I'm just looking over the schedule, and we
- 10:26Speaker 2: can't possibly in 10 minutes go over everything that you
- 10:28Speaker 2: have here. And we'll have you back as we get
- 10:31Speaker 2: a little bit closer. But, I mean, I know you've
- 10:32Speaker 2: got a big show at Mountain Stage on October the 4th.
- 10:38Speaker 2: At the Harvest Art Fair stage at Capital Market, you
- 10:41Speaker 2: got the Rocky Horror Show preview. Now, what is that
- 10:45Speaker 2: all about? Because we just lost Tim Curry last week.
- 10:50Speaker 8: For folks that aren't familiar, there's a couple companies, actually,
- 10:53Speaker 8: theater companies in town that are doing this now. There's
- 10:56Speaker 8: grown this whole culture around Rocky Horror Picture Show where
- 11:00Speaker 8: they screen the movie but then have what they call
- 11:03Speaker 8: shadow cast. So they act out the movie while the
- 11:06Speaker 8: movie is playing. And there's interactions between them and the audience.
- 11:10Speaker 8: It's a whole genre of theater that has grown up
- 11:14Speaker 8: around the Rocky Horror Picture Show. And the Alban Theater
- 11:17Speaker 8: there in St. Albans is doing a Rocky Horror production
- 11:22Speaker 8: in late October. And we invited them to come and
- 11:25Speaker 8: do a preview of that show. at our stage at
- 11:28Speaker 8: the Capital Market on October 3rd at 11.30 a.m., which
- 11:32Speaker 8: is a little early for something like that.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Or a little late.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Or a little late. Yeah, that's true.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Depends on what you did the night before. But I
- 11:41Speaker 2: was looking at the people that you mentioned them, and again,
- 11:44Speaker 2: I'm looking at– there's a gentleman on– On October the 4th,
- 11:48Speaker 2: playing a new name, Andrew Adkins. I have worked shows,
- 11:52Speaker 2: I say worked, as like emceed shows with Andrew Adkins
- 11:56Speaker 2: in the past, man. I mean, the guy's incredible.
- 11:58Speaker 1: He really, really is.
- 11:58Speaker 8: Singer, songwriter, great voice, great guitar player. Excited to have him.
- 12:04Speaker 8: That same day, we also have a musician, Bex. They're
- 12:08Speaker 8: a singer-songwriter from, I think, the Morgantown area. I found
- 12:12Speaker 8: them on TikTok, and they're somebody else who's just burning
- 12:15Speaker 8: up the West Virginia music scene with some great songs
- 12:19Speaker 8: and vocals and guitar playing.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Fantastic.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And here's the great thing about all of this stuff,
- 12:23Speaker 2: or at least the overwhelming majority of it, it's free.
- 12:27Speaker 2: It's free entertainment, and you can't. Again, just like with Festivall,
- 12:33Speaker 2: you can't possibly– I mean, you can try to cover
- 12:36Speaker 2: it all, but it's going to be really hard to
- 12:37Speaker 2: do it all.
- 12:38Speaker 1: That's the plan.
- 12:39Speaker 8: If you feel disappointed that you didn't make it to
- 12:41Speaker 8: something because you were at some other very cool event,
- 12:44Speaker 8: we've done our jobs. Yeah, it's important for us to
- 12:47Speaker 8: make these things accessible. It's in our mission statement. It's
- 12:50Speaker 8: in our name.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Festive All.
- 12:52Speaker 8: We want to represent all the arts, and we want
- 12:54Speaker 8: all the arts to be accessible to all the people.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Give us the website. And again, we're still a few
- 13:00Speaker 2: weeks away. It's actually going to start off on September
- 13:02Speaker 2: the 29th, and it'll run through October the 4th. But
- 13:06Speaker 2: where's the best place for people to take a look
- 13:07Speaker 2: at the entire schedule?
- 13:07Speaker 8: The best place to find it all is FestiveFall.com. F-E-S-T-I-V-Fall.com.
- 13:14Speaker 8: It's a brand new website we launched, and it has
- 13:16Speaker 8: our entire schedule listed. And all the information you need.
- 13:20Speaker 8: You can also purchase your tickets there. And also, we're
- 13:23Speaker 8: distributing these snazzy brochures all over town. So just about
- 13:27Speaker 8: anywhere you go, you'll probably see them on the front counter.
- 13:29Speaker 8: Will you please make sure that you leave some out
- 13:31Speaker 8: front while I'm here?
- 13:32Speaker 1: Absolutely. I've got a stack right here.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Okay. We'll leave them out front with Antoine if you
- 13:34Speaker 2: don't care.
- 13:35Speaker 1: All right.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Let's have you back on as we get a little
- 13:38Speaker 2: bit closer. Maybe a couple days before.
- 13:39Speaker 7: Yes, sir.
- 13:40Speaker 2: And if you've got access to any of these artists
- 13:42Speaker 2: or artisans... They're taking part in this, Zach. Feel free
- 13:45Speaker 2: to bring them in.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Bring them by. That would be a great idea.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I love that.
- 13:48Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 13:48Speaker 2: When we are listed as a media sponsor here to
- 13:50Speaker 2: all of you are.
- 13:51Speaker 8: Let me express some gratitude for the WVRC. As far
- 13:56Speaker 8: as I know, the first media sponsor is. In Festivals history,
- 14:01Speaker 8: you guys are so great to work with. I love
- 14:02Speaker 8: coming on your shows, all your various shows, and Bobby
- 14:05Speaker 8: over there in your marketing club.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Is great to work with.
- 14:08Speaker 7: Okay.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Come on now.
- 14:10Speaker 2: You guys are wonderful partners to work with. Somebody asked
- 14:12Speaker 2: here about mini golf. Do we have a mini golf?
- 14:15Speaker 1: Mini golf? Okay. So in the summer festival, there is
- 14:18Speaker 1: the downtown open. Yes.
- 14:20Speaker 8: Where all the different businesses downtown sponsor a hole, and
- 14:24Speaker 8: then you can make your way around downtown.
- 14:26Speaker 10: Okay.
- 14:26Speaker 1: That is during our summer festival. That wouldn't be for fall.
- 14:29Speaker 2: All right.
- 14:30Speaker 1: So just wait until May of next year.
- 14:32Speaker 2: All right. Zach Harrell, always a pleasure to have you
- 14:33Speaker 2: on the show, man.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Likewise.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Thanks a lot.
- 14:36Speaker 1: 922.
- 14:36Speaker 2: The Dave Allen Show on 580 Live brought to you
- 14:38Speaker 2: in part by Huston's Pizza. This month at Huston's, get

- 16:51Speaker 2: welcome him to the show now. Adam Phillips, he was
- 16:53Speaker 2: named the Director of Strategic Initiatives for Advantage Valley. He
- 16:57Speaker 2: joins us this morning. Good morning, sir. Welcome to the show.
- 17:01Speaker 9: Morning, Dave.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Thanks for having us. Thank you for being here. Give
- 17:03Speaker 2: us the bio on Adam Phillips.
- 17:05Speaker 7: Bio.
- 17:06Speaker 14: Well, I've worked for about nine years for the Huntington
- 17:08Speaker 14: Area Development Council before I took a new job here
- 17:11Speaker 14: with Advantage Valley as director of strategic initiatives, as you said.
- 17:16Speaker 14: Prior to that, I did a little bit of work
- 17:18Speaker 14: in Ohio, but all in economic development. I've been in
- 17:21Speaker 14: that career for about 10 years.
- 17:23Speaker 2: So what exactly will you be doing in this role?
- 17:26Speaker 2: We also have Marjorie Cook here, a good friend with us,
- 17:28Speaker 2: who's the marketing communications. Is that your title? Yeah, you
- 17:31Speaker 2: got it. If not, we just gave it to you
- 17:32Speaker 2: that time. So what exactly, Adam, will you be doing
- 17:35Speaker 2: in this new role?
- 17:36Speaker 14: So at first, it'll be really focused on our expanding
- 17:39Speaker 14: markets program. So I will be managing that program for
- 17:43Speaker 14: the organization. So Advantage Valley, it is a nine-county economic
- 17:47Speaker 14: development organization representing nine counties in Huntington and Charleston metros.
- 17:52Speaker 14: So we work with a group of regional partners at
- 17:56Speaker 14: the local level. And so my role will be coordinating
- 17:59Speaker 14: with those organizations to extend the services of this program
- 18:03Speaker 14: to businesses throughout the Advantage Valley region.
- 18:06Speaker 2: And I'm glad that you pointed out that it is
- 18:08Speaker 2: a nine-county region, because when we talk to Advantage Valley sometimes,
- 18:12Speaker 2: and I'm guilty of this as well, we think Huntington,
- 18:14Speaker 2: Putnam County, Cabell County, Putnam County, Kanawha County. There's nine
- 18:18Speaker 2: counties involved. There is.
- 18:19Speaker 14: We go all the way over to Wayne, Mason. Jackson
- 18:23Speaker 14: County as well, Lincoln. I'm sure there's a couple others
- 18:28Speaker 14: in there. But yes, it is the metro area, but
- 18:31Speaker 14: it is nine counties that goes up the Ohio River
- 18:34Speaker 14: as well. And so a lot of exciting projects in
- 18:37Speaker 14: the whole area.
- 18:38Speaker 2: And I'll tell you, I am a big believer, and
- 18:39Speaker 2: listeners have heard me say this before, I'm a big
- 18:41Speaker 2: believer in the whole concept of getting these counties together.
- 18:45Speaker 2: And again, not just the three you think about, the,
- 18:48Speaker 2: you know, Kanawha, Putnam, and Campbell, but all the other
- 18:50Speaker 2: counties as well, all collaborating together. together, because as Terrell
- 18:54Speaker 2: Ellis and I have talked about on the show in
- 18:55Speaker 2: the past, you know, economic prosperity, jobs, they don't stop
- 19:01Speaker 2: at the border, you know. And so when you have
- 19:03Speaker 2: these things going on, you are going to just because
- 19:05Speaker 2: something is happening in Kanawha County doesn't mean it's not
- 19:09Speaker 2: of interest to Putnam County and Cabell County and all
- 19:12Speaker 2: the other counties as well. Absolutely.
- 19:14Speaker 14: I think we've seen a number of projects that have
- 19:16Speaker 14: impacts across political borders and When you have a new
- 19:20Speaker 14: core-like investment that comes into the region, that's going to
- 19:23Speaker 14: impact all of our counties, right, either from a workforce perspective,
- 19:27Speaker 14: from a housing perspective. And those are issues that Advantage
- 19:32Speaker 14: Valley is on the front line of.
- 19:34Speaker 2: When you hit the ground running, have you officially started yet?
- 19:36Speaker 2: I know the press releases went out yesterday. Are you
- 19:38Speaker 2: used to day like day one?
- 19:39Speaker 1: Yesterday was day one.
- 19:40Speaker 6: Okay.
- 19:40Speaker 12: All right.
- 19:41Speaker 2: So we got you on day two.
- 19:42Speaker 1: That's all right.
- 19:42Speaker 2: And you came back to the second day. So that's
- 19:44Speaker 2: always a good sign. So what do you initially what
- 19:47Speaker 2: are some of the projects that you really want to
- 19:49Speaker 2: hit the ground running with?
- 19:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:51Speaker 14: Like I said, our expanding markets program, that really is
- 19:54Speaker 14: designed to deliver resources, technical assistance resources to companies throughout
- 19:59Speaker 14: the Advantage Valley market. We work with our regional partner groups.
- 20:03Speaker 14: So we actually support staff positions in those in five
- 20:08Speaker 14: of our local economic development organizations that we work with,
- 20:11Speaker 14: the folks in Mason County, in Jackson County, Putnam County,
- 20:15Speaker 14: Charleston Area Alliance, and the Huntington Area Development Council, which
- 20:19Speaker 14: actually covers Cabell and Wayne County. So coordinating with the
- 20:22Speaker 14: staff there to really begin to create those outreach efforts
- 20:28Speaker 14: to the business community to start to diagnose or to
- 20:31Speaker 14: assess companies and their challenges that they're facing. We have
- 20:35Speaker 14: a number of initiatives that we have really been a
- 20:39Speaker 14: part of over the years. I should say that we
- 20:44Speaker 14: have been doing this for a while. Really, with my
- 20:49Speaker 14: previous role with Hagco, we worked with Advantage Valley on
- 20:53Speaker 14: expanding markets, kind of version one and version two. And
- 20:56Speaker 14: so we're kind of rolling out version three of this
- 20:58Speaker 14: program this year. But as far as initiatives go, we
- 21:02Speaker 14: are looking to support businesses and companies that want to
- 21:06Speaker 14: expand their exports. that want to find localized supply chains
- 21:11Speaker 14: that are maybe purchasing materials or supplies from external markets
- 21:16Speaker 14: or from outside the United States. We are working on
- 21:20Speaker 14: programs to help companies fill those gaps. And we also
- 21:24Speaker 14: work on a lot of workforce development initiatives with our
- 21:27Speaker 14: state partners. We help connect companies with finance and technical
- 21:32Speaker 14: assistance grants. So there's a lot of avenues that we
- 21:35Speaker 14: can go down.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Talking again with Adam Phillips. He's the new Director of
- 21:38Speaker 2: Strategic Initiatives for Advantage Valley. Dave Allen Show on 580
- 21:41Speaker 2: Live brought to you in part by Pinnacle Consultants, helping
- 21:44Speaker 2: to identify environmental concerns like asbestos, lead, mold, and indoor
- 21:47Speaker 2: quality issues in buildings all across the state, providing inspections, testing,
- 21:51Speaker 2: and accredited lab services you can trust. Check out PinnacleCorp.net,
- 21:54Speaker 2: helping you understand your environment because what you don't know happens.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Can't hurt you. And of course, I don't know if
- 21:59Speaker 2: this is something you'll be covered in, but anytime we
- 22:01Speaker 2: have Cheryl Ellis on the show, she always talks about housing.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Housing is the thing. You know, these housing, we're trying
- 22:07Speaker 2: to get more housing in here because we have a
- 22:09Speaker 2: shortage of houses in this whole area that we've talked about,
- 22:12Speaker 2: quality homes that people can get involved with. And I'm
- 22:16Speaker 2: sure you'll be a part of that, Marjorie. I know
- 22:18Speaker 2: you're already involved in it.
- 22:20Speaker 7: Yeah, I'll get the housing question. You're absolutely right, Dave.
- 22:24Speaker 7: We have actually just had, last week, we brought in
- 22:27Speaker 7: a national expert. His name is Patrick Bowen. On last Thursday,
- 22:31Speaker 7: Patrick Bowen with Bowen National Research gave an hour-long webinar
- 22:36Speaker 7: about our region. He has done an update on our
- 22:40Speaker 7: 2023 housing needs assessment. He did a 2026 version, and
- 22:44Speaker 7: he ran through the highlights, the takeaways. And we had
- 22:50Speaker 7: over 100 people registered for that webinar. It is actually
- 22:52Speaker 7: now on our website to be viewed. But the main
- 22:56Speaker 7: takeaways were we have a gap, a housing gap of 29,000 houses.
- 23:03Speaker 7: This takes into consideration the recent investments that have been
- 23:07Speaker 7: announced for our region, upwards of, you know, something like 6,000
- 23:12Speaker 7: direct jobs and 17 indirect jobs for about 22,000 And
- 23:18Speaker 7: that's even more now with some of the data center
- 23:21Speaker 7: jobs and announcements that have come online. But we have
- 23:24Speaker 7: a crisis. We are not unique. It is happening across
- 23:28Speaker 7: the country. But Advantage Valley right now is really trying
- 23:31Speaker 7: to do site assessments. So if anyone knows good land
- 23:35Speaker 7: and good possibilities for possible home sites, whether it be
- 23:39Speaker 7: new development or redevelopment opportunities, we are actively working. In fact,
- 23:45Speaker 7: Terrell Ellis has just The same day as the webinar,
- 23:48Speaker 7: she held the first meeting of our housing task force,
- 23:53Speaker 7: 16 community members. Nancy Bruns is leading that effort. So
- 23:58Speaker 7: stay tuned. But looking at a multi-pronged approach, some might
- 24:02Speaker 7: be legislative, some might be tax incentives, that sorts of
- 24:06Speaker 7: things to try to break down the barriers to building.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Help solve this problem. And bottom line is we got
- 24:10Speaker 2: to have housing.
- 24:11Speaker 7: We got to have housing.
- 24:12Speaker 2: We got to have that. And a texter says Marjorie
- 24:14Speaker 2: and Adam are great advantage. Valley does such important work
- 24:16Speaker 2: for economic development here in central West Virginia, the Bennington foundation,
- 24:20Speaker 2: part of their funding for this initiative.
- 24:22Speaker 11: Very nice.
- 24:23Speaker 6: Yes.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Thank you. We appreciate that. So your background and things
- 24:29Speaker 2: that you've done before, how do you think that that
- 24:31Speaker 2: is going to lend you and give you what you
- 24:33Speaker 2: need to do this job now with all the things
- 24:35Speaker 2: you've done in the past? Because, I mean, a lot
- 24:36Speaker 2: of this is kind of the same circles kind of
- 24:38Speaker 2: a thing.
- 24:39Speaker 14: Very much so. I think my background with the Huntington
- 24:42Speaker 14: Area Development Council itself being a multi-county organization with Cabell
- 24:46Speaker 14: and Wayne County, I think really prepares me for this role.
- 24:51Speaker 2: It being kind of a regional collaboration.
- 24:52Speaker 14: But, you know, in my previous role, I've had direct,
- 24:56Speaker 14: you know, partnerships, relationships with organizations like the Putnam County
- 25:01Speaker 14: Development Authority, like the Charleston Area Alliance. So I'm coming
- 25:05Speaker 14: into this role very, not just familiar with the folks
- 25:09Speaker 14: that work at these agencies and organizations, but having worked
- 25:12Speaker 14: with them over a number of years. And so this
- 25:14Speaker 14: really is a continuation of what we have previously built.
- 25:17Speaker 2: I'm sure you're going to do great in the role.
- 25:19Speaker 2: And so it's a Always a pleasure to have you
- 25:21Speaker 2: on the show anytime that you need to come. These
- 25:23Speaker 2: folks know I always have a microphone for them. So, Adam,
- 25:26Speaker 2: best of luck to you in the new role. Adam
- 25:28Speaker 2: is the director of strategic initiatives for Advantage Valley. Before
- 25:31Speaker 2: we go, Marjorie, I want to give you an opportunity
- 25:34Speaker 2: to explain about it. Talk about anything going on with
- 25:36Speaker 2: Advantage Valley as we speak that we didn't touch today.
- 25:38Speaker 7: All right. Well, we are just thrilled to have Adam,
- 25:40Speaker 7: of course. He– just by way of information, I have
- 25:45Speaker 7: worked with Adam for nine years because of– Because he
- 25:49Speaker 7: was a valued partner at Hadco. So my relationship with
- 25:54Speaker 7: him is just now he's in my building. So it's
- 25:58Speaker 7: really tremendous and we feel really lucky to have his expertise.
- 26:01Speaker 7: He's really smart and he's really good at what he does.
- 26:04Speaker 7: So we're lucky to have him. So Advantage Valley has
- 26:06Speaker 7: been super busy, not only as the housing work that
- 26:09Speaker 7: we've done last week, we also kicked off an entrepreneurship program,
- 26:13Speaker 7: the Taste of Appalachia. We did a program last year.
- 26:17Speaker 7: Last year was our inaugural year, but it is an
- 26:20Speaker 7: event where we highlight regional food vendors, often small cottage
- 26:25Speaker 7: food producers, and we compile a series of gift boxes.
- 26:31Speaker 7: This year, we're looking at six, maybe seven boxes. And
- 26:35Speaker 7: so we've just kicked that off, and we have a
- 26:38Speaker 7: huge showcase on October 18th from 1 to 4 at
- 26:42Speaker 7: Capital Market. We will have the 17 vendors that are
- 26:45Speaker 7: going to be in with their products are going to
- 26:48Speaker 7: be in our boxes. We'll be there, and boxes will
- 26:51Speaker 7: be for sale. And we will– it's a way to
- 26:54Speaker 7: help lift up these vendors. One vendor, her name is
- 26:59Speaker 7: Mary Smith and her husband– veteran-owned business. They run a
- 27:03Speaker 7: barbecue sauce company called Tipsy Roos. The Taste of Appalachia
- 27:08Speaker 7: boxes last year accounted for half of their sales annually.
- 27:13Speaker 7: And they now have new friends and visitors to their
- 27:18Speaker 7: site and to their product. So really excited about that.
- 27:21Speaker 7: And then at the end of October, we have a
- 27:24Speaker 7: fellow by the name of Ted Abernathy coming to Advantage Valley.
- 27:29Speaker 7: He is a leading national economic developer, a consultant of sorts.
- 27:34Speaker 7: Terrell Ellis heard him at a recent SEDC, Southern Economic
- 27:39Speaker 7: Development Conference, Council Conference in Florida, and he is tremendous.
- 27:46Speaker 7: And we're going to talk to him, have him talk
- 27:48Speaker 7: to us, rather, about trends in the industry and what
- 27:51Speaker 7: West Virginia might need to do to continue to build
- 27:55Speaker 7: our economy and grow. So we're really excited about having
- 27:58Speaker 7: Ted Abernathy with us at the end of October.
- 28:00Speaker 2: There's always good things going on. Give us the website
- 28:03Speaker 2: so people can follow along with what you guys are doing.
- 28:05Speaker 7: AdvantageValley.com. And we serve really many different audiences. One is
- 28:12Speaker 7: the entrepreneurship world, the business owner, whether you're a startup
- 28:16Speaker 7: or you're into your business. And then, of course, we
- 28:19Speaker 7: do business attraction globally. And then we service businesses here
- 28:23Speaker 7: for retention and recruitment and business working with the existing
- 28:27Speaker 7: businesses here in the region. So, We have a lot
- 28:30Speaker 7: on our plate, and we cannot do it without the
- 28:32Speaker 7: many partners and funders that help make it possible. So
- 28:36Speaker 7: thanks to all of our sponsors for having us on today.
- 28:40Speaker 2: All right. Marjorie, it's always a pleasure to see you.
- 28:41Speaker 2: And Adam, great to meet you, and welcome aboard to
- 28:43Speaker 2: the show. Thank you, Dave. Welcome aboard to the job,
- 28:45Speaker 2: I should say. You're always welcome on the show. Just
- 28:47Speaker 2: hired you for the show. Appreciate you being here. Both
- 28:50Speaker 2: of you, hang out with me here in just one second.

- 32:04Speaker 10: Really turned it on. New starting quarterback, Brian Johnson. Got
- 32:07Speaker 10: mixed in a little bit with Joe Daly, who's a
- 32:10Speaker 10: young guy they really like. He ended up with five
- 32:13Speaker 10: touchdowns and was the conference offensive player of the week.
- 32:15Speaker 10: He didn't even start the game. So a lot of
- 32:17Speaker 10: excitement coming out of the first week. A lot of
- 32:19Speaker 10: really good feelings around the program. And you go to
- 32:21Speaker 10: Robert Morris.
- 32:22Speaker 1: That's right.
- 32:23Speaker 10: Get a Division I opponent this week.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Go to Pittsburgh.
- 32:25Speaker 10: Well, Moon Township, but the greater Pittsburgh Metroplex. for this
- 32:29Speaker 10: one between West Virginia State and Robert Morris. They're coming
- 32:31Speaker 10: off of a season-opening win against Wagner. It's been a
- 32:33Speaker 10: couple years since State has played a D1 opponent. We're
- 32:36Speaker 10: excited to see what that looks like.
- 32:37Speaker 2: All right, I wanted to have you stop by because
- 32:39Speaker 2: every Wednesday night, this is something new we're doing this season.
- 32:41Speaker 2: You're doing a coach's show live at one of my
- 32:43Speaker 2: favorite places, The Pitch. So you'll be out there tonight
- 32:47Speaker 2: with the coach and some special guests. That's right. I'll
- 32:50Speaker 2: be out there.
- 32:50Speaker 10: It's the John Pennington Show every Wednesday night of game
- 32:54Speaker 10: week during the season at West Virginia State. So that
- 32:56Speaker 10: is this week. We're off next week, and then we
- 32:59Speaker 10: go nine straight weeks to finish the season. Every Wednesday night,
- 33:02Speaker 10: 7 to 8, live at the pitch at Shawnee. It
- 33:05Speaker 10: is Wing Wednesday, so it is dollar wings, traditional and boneless,
- 33:08Speaker 10: as well as dollar off all draft beer until close.
- 33:12Speaker 10: So come out, enjoy some wings, hang out with us.
- 33:15Speaker 10: Listen to the show. And like you said, got a
- 33:17Speaker 10: special guest this week. We'll have special guests as the
- 33:19Speaker 10: season goes on. And this week we're going to have
- 33:22Speaker 10: Joe Daly, who I talked about there, was the conference
- 33:24Speaker 10: offensive player of the week this week after his performance
- 33:27Speaker 10: against Shawan. Threw three touchdowns, ran for two more, and
- 33:31Speaker 10: we're excited to have him on the show.
- 33:32Speaker 2: All right. And, again, you do this every Wednesday night
- 33:35Speaker 2: at 7 o'clock during the season. You will take off
- 33:37Speaker 2: next week because they're off next week. They're the bye week.
- 33:41Speaker 2: So it's a great atmosphere. And if you've never been
- 33:43Speaker 2: to the pitch, as I said, it's one of my
- 33:45Speaker 2: favorite places. You've got plenty of room, plenty of parking.
- 33:48Speaker 2: And you've got that pitch dust, they call it. Is
- 33:52Speaker 2: that right? I found that that stuff goes on everything, man.
- 33:55Speaker 2: I mean, you can get it on wings. You can
- 33:57Speaker 2: put it on French fries. You can put it in coffee.
- 34:01Speaker 2: I don't know. You can do whatever you want.
- 34:02Speaker 10: Deep fry a table leg and roll it in that stuff,
- 34:04Speaker 10: and I'd probably eat it.
- 34:05Speaker 1: It is good. It's really good stuff. It's great stuff.
- 34:07Speaker 10: It is great stuff, and we're excited. If you're a
- 34:11Speaker 10: season ticket holder that goes to every game or you
- 34:14Speaker 10: don't care about football and you just want to come
- 34:15Speaker 10: out for Dollar Wings, we're going to be there.
- 34:17Speaker 2: We're going to be bringing you.
- 34:18Speaker 1: A good time, and we're excited for it.
- 34:19Speaker 2: All right, Daniel. I appreciate you briefly stopping in this morning, man.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Thanks a lot. Thank you. And again, Showtime tonight, John
- 34:24Speaker 2: Pennington's show on 107.3 The Beat. And again, they'll start
- 34:27Speaker 2: things about 7 o'clock tonight. Appreciate you, buddy. Thanks a lot.
- 34:30Speaker 2: You can leave now. Okay. Or you can hang out.
- 34:33Speaker 9: Kick me out.
- 34:34Speaker 2: You want to hang out? I don't care. We can
- 34:36Speaker 2: tell Jenkins that you were working hard down here.
- 34:39Speaker 1: If you want.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Now, he's listening, so you better go back upstairs.
- 34:41Speaker 7: That's a good point.
- 34:41Speaker 1: I need to get moving.
- 34:42Speaker 2: All right. Daniel Woods, Metro News, News and Sports. And again,
- 34:45Speaker 2: the coaches show for West Virginia State. Do that every
- 34:48Speaker 2: Wednesday night, but not next week because they have a
- 34:50Speaker 2: bye week next week. But tonight, 7 o'clock at the
- 34:52Speaker 2: pitch located next to West Virginia State. So come on
- 34:55Speaker 2: in there. Enjoy dollar wing night. and more. Great food there, too,
- 34:59Speaker 2: and just a great atmosphere there at the pitch. 943,
- 35:02Speaker 2: I invite you to join me every Friday morning, 906,
- 35:04Speaker 2: for the Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week from
- 35:05Speaker 2: the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, brought to you by Almost 7 Interiors, family-owned,
- 35:10Speaker 2: proudly serving the community for over 50 years. They specialize
- 35:12Speaker 2: in custom blinds, shades, shutters, upholstery, and beautifully crafted sewn goods,
- 35:17Speaker 2: homes to hospitals, classrooms to commercial spaces. They do it all.
- 35:20Speaker 2: They're located at 516 D Street in South Charleston. And
- 35:23Speaker 2: speaking of the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, I did not have
- 35:26Speaker 2: an opportunity to to mention this earlier this week. We
- 35:29Speaker 2: did kegs for canines this past Saturday afternoon at the
- 35:34Speaker 2: Red Carpet Lounge over on Elizabeth Street. Had a great,
- 35:37Speaker 2: great turnout there. And the important thing is we raised
- 35:40Speaker 2: a lot of money for the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, but
- 35:43Speaker 2: also we were able to get some pets hooked up
- 35:47Speaker 2: with some... Pet parents, some adoptions went on over there.
- 35:51Speaker 2: So that is really, really cool. That's what we like
- 35:53Speaker 2: to see. We love doing that event. I was there.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Steve Animal, 98.7 The Mountain was there. Logan Scott from V100.
- 36:00Speaker 2: So just a great, great time. And I want to
- 36:02Speaker 2: say thank you to everybody that stopped by to say
- 36:03Speaker 2: hello to us. And people actually got to see, you know,
- 36:06Speaker 2: Angie Gillenwater from the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association is my co-host.
- 36:10Speaker 2: for the Adopt Me, Please Pet of the Week segment
- 36:12Speaker 2: every Friday. So people actually get to see Angie and
- 36:16Speaker 2: talk to her. And she's a big-time star, you know,
- 36:19Speaker 2: thanks to me. But anyway, thanks to everybody that came
- 36:22Speaker 2: out for Kegs for Canines this past week, this past
- 36:25Speaker 2: Saturday over at the Red Carpet Lounge. Coming up later today,
- 36:29Speaker 2: Metro News Midday 13 News. And tonight, live anchorman of
- 36:31Speaker 2: Aaron and me, powered by Salango Law. It is Wednesday,
- 36:34Speaker 2: which means we're going to introduce you to another wonderful
- 36:36Speaker 2: West Virginian. Today is opening day of the business summit
- 36:40Speaker 2: at the Greenbrier. Now, T.J. Meadows and Dave Wilson are
- 36:44Speaker 2: doing talk live from there both today and tomorrow. We'll
- 36:47Speaker 2: check in with them during the 12 o'clock hour. Jeff
- 36:49Speaker 2: Jenkins will have the news. Our trucking expert, Shannon Everett,
- 36:53Speaker 2: is going to stop by to talk about some issues
- 36:55Speaker 2: with trucking in America. Good buddy Emmett Pepper from Energy
- 36:58Speaker 2: Efficient West Virginia will stop by. It is week two
- 37:01Speaker 2: of the Metro News High School Sportsline program that will
- 37:03Speaker 2: air tonight. Fred Persinger will join us with a preview
- 37:07Speaker 2: of that and, of course, Open Line West Virginia. Metro
- 37:09Speaker 2: News Midday with 13 News and Tonight Live Anchor Amanda
- 37:12Speaker 2: Barrett and me, powered by Selangor Law, coming up at
- 37:15Speaker 2: noon today. On this show tomorrow, as it's been well documented,
- 37:19Speaker 2: we are getting a new county commissioner in Kanawha County
- 37:22Speaker 2: to complete the term of Lance Wheeler, who resigned to
- 37:24Speaker 2: become director of the Ambulance Authority. The new commissioner, Austin Gessel, is,
- 37:29Speaker 2: I think, last I heard, going to be sworn in tomorrow.
- 37:33Speaker 2: And he will be completing the term of Lance Wheeler.
- 37:35Speaker 2: He will not be on your ballot come November. I
- 37:38Speaker 2: hate to use the term, you know, spot holder, placeholder, whatever,
- 37:42Speaker 2: because he's going to do a great job in that role.
- 37:44Speaker 2: But he's not running for it permanently. All right. He's
- 37:47Speaker 2: just completing the term of Lance Wheeler. So Austin Gessel
- 37:51Speaker 2: is due to be sworn in as a new county commissioner.
- 37:53Speaker 2: He'll join me. Coming up on the show tomorrow. Also,
- 37:56Speaker 2: our good friend Joe Stevens from the city of Nitro
- 38:00Speaker 2: is going to be on the show tomorrow. Pretty cool stuff.
- 38:03Speaker 2: And I think this is the fourth year they've done this.
- 38:06Speaker 2: The cities of Nitro. and St. Albans, rivals for the
- 38:10Speaker 2: most part, at least on the football field and the
- 38:12Speaker 2: basketball courts and so on and so forth. They are
- 38:16Speaker 2: teaming up for their annual Labor Day weekend fireworks show.
- 38:20Speaker 2: It's Sunday night around 930. Now, what they do is
- 38:22Speaker 2: they close the Dick Henderson Bridge starting at 830 that
- 38:25Speaker 2: night so people can actually walk out onto the bridge
- 38:28Speaker 2: and to take it all in, and then the fireworks
- 38:31Speaker 2: will be set off from the St. Albans boat ramp.
- 38:33Speaker 2: So we'll get into all that with Joe coming up
- 38:35Speaker 2: on the show tomorrow. And we talked a little about football.
- 38:38Speaker 2: I am excited about football being back. You know that.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Marshall and WVU both back in action to open their
- 38:44Speaker 2: seasons on Saturday. WVU at home against Coastal Carolina saluting
- 38:49Speaker 2: Pat White. It's a whiteout. at Milo Pushkar Stadium. Marshall
- 38:53Speaker 2: set to travel to Penn State, heading up to Happy Valley.
- 38:56Speaker 2: MEC action as well, as we mentioned earlier, with Daniel
- 38:59Speaker 2: West Virginia State traveling to Robert Morris on Saturday. That
- 39:02Speaker 2: action on 107.3 The Beat on Saturday night. High school
- 39:05Speaker 2: football this Friday night. Our WCHS Network Game of the Week.
- 39:09Speaker 2: It'll be Hurricane playing host to George Washington. Our coverage

- 42:36Speaker 2: This was kind of a surprise to me. Just got
- 42:39Speaker 2: a press release here from the Charleston Police Department that
- 42:42Speaker 2: Tony Haislin is going to be retiring after nearly 27
- 42:45Speaker 2: years of service. But the police department says in the statement,
- 42:48Speaker 2: I will officially retire on Friday. That's this Friday. And
- 42:52Speaker 2: we'll have a news story on that a little bit
- 42:53Speaker 2: later on. I cannot remember a time. Tony Hazlund wasn't
- 42:57Speaker 2: part of the Charleston Police Department. Well, I guess it's
- 43:00Speaker 2: been 27 years. And so he is going he's announced
- 43:03Speaker 2: his retirement on September the 4th. I can tell you.
- 43:07Speaker 2: And I don't do a whole lot of news. I
- 43:09Speaker 2: leave that up to the news professionals. But from time
- 43:12Speaker 2: to time, we've had Tony on this show or on Midday,
- 43:15Speaker 2: and certainly the folks in the media depend on him
- 43:18Speaker 2: to help us out when we need information, whatever. He's
- 43:20Speaker 2: just done a fantastic job. So a big shout-out to him.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Hope he enjoys his retirement. We'll try to get him
- 43:25Speaker 2: on the show. at some point, maybe give us some
- 43:28Speaker 2: of the highlights of his time in office. But again,
- 43:30Speaker 2: that press release just going out that after 27 years
- 43:33Speaker 2: with the Charleston Police Department, Tony Haislin has announced that
- 43:36Speaker 2: he is going to retire effective this Friday. And Sergeant Bales,
- 43:43Speaker 2: Travis Bales, has been on the show also numerous times
- 43:46Speaker 2: as well. He is going to be serving as the
- 43:48Speaker 2: new public relations officer. So his office, it says, will
- 43:51Speaker 2: be located in City Hall. So we'll try to get
- 43:53Speaker 2: to both of them on the show at a at
- 43:57Speaker 2: a time in the very near future. So I don't
- 43:59Speaker 2: know if you heard this or not, but yesterday State
- 44:01Speaker 2: Treasurer Larry Pack was on TalkLine with Wilson Meadows yesterday
- 44:05Speaker 2: talking about this new report that he and some others
- 44:08Speaker 2: put together that he says will help the public, lawmakers, etc.,
- 44:13Speaker 2: better understand how the taxes from data centers are going
- 44:17Speaker 2: to work. Now, he focused on two of these centers,
- 44:19Speaker 2: one in Berkeley County, the other in Putnam County, the
- 44:22Speaker 2: Google project there. And for our purposes, being a Charleston-based show,
- 44:26Speaker 2: we'll focus on just that one right now, the Google
- 44:28Speaker 2: project in Buffalo. That Putnam County project is valued at
- 44:32Speaker 2: around $ 7 billion, that's billion with a B, dollars. And
- 44:36Speaker 2: Secretary Pack says the Putnam Google project would provide around $ 8. 5
- 44:40Speaker 2: million a year for the Putnam County Commission. And the
- 44:46Speaker 2: Board of Education says We'll get about $ 17. 4 million per year. Now,
- 44:51Speaker 2: let's rack them up and shoot them again on that. Again,
- 44:54Speaker 2: according to this report, this Google data center in Putnam
- 44:58Speaker 2: County in Buffalo, $ 8. 5 million for the county commission and $ 17. 4
- 45:05Speaker 2: million for the Putnam County Board of Education. And I
- 45:09Speaker 2: did think it was interesting that Larry Pack, being the
- 45:13Speaker 2: all-around nice guy that Larry Pack is, was quick to
- 45:17Speaker 2: point out Some things that maybe other proponents of data
- 45:20Speaker 2: centers haven't always been as good about pointing out. I'll
- 45:25Speaker 2: give you a little quote here. And by the way,
- 45:29Speaker 2: we have a much bigger story on this project as
- 45:31Speaker 2: well as the Berkeley County project available at WVMetroNews.com. But
- 45:34Speaker 2: Larry Pack said during the interview with TJ and Dave yesterday, Quote,
- 45:40Speaker 2: you just got to remember there is some disruption to
- 45:44Speaker 2: people's lives. We've got to give them grace and understanding.
- 45:48Speaker 2: If they bought their piece of paradise and all of
- 45:50Speaker 2: a sudden you have a million square foot building next
- 45:53Speaker 2: door that's having an impact on them. End quote. So, again,
- 45:57Speaker 2: I give Larry Pack credit for that because that's a
- 46:01Speaker 2: lot of the proponents of the data centers. And I
- 46:04Speaker 2: am a proponent have just said basically build, baby, build.
- 46:08Speaker 5: Okay.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Larry Pack, being Larry Pack, felt the need to put
- 46:11Speaker 2: that in there as well, and hats off to him
- 46:13Speaker 2: on that. Treasurer Pack released the info yesterday, and the
- 46:17Speaker 2: overall analysis was done by former Deputy Revenue Secretary Mark Mukau.
- 46:22Speaker 2: And you can read it for yourself at wvmetronews.com. And
- 46:27Speaker 2: I'm sorry, I'm speaking now as a Putnam Countian who, granted,
- 46:31Speaker 2: does not live in the Buffalo area where this thing
- 46:33Speaker 2: is being proposed. And I fully trust Secretary Pack on this,
- 46:40Speaker 2: not because he's the state treasurer, not because of that,
- 46:43Speaker 2: but because of his previous success in the business world.
- 46:45Speaker 2: The guy has been a big time job creator over
- 46:49Speaker 2: the years. And if there's anything that Larry Pack knows,
- 46:52Speaker 2: it's business. And so they tell me it's a good
- 46:56Speaker 2: deal from an economic standpoint. And you talk about that
- 46:59Speaker 2: much money going to the Putnam County Commission and also
- 47:01Speaker 2: to the Putnam County school system, to the tune of
- 47:03Speaker 2: the school system, 17.4 million dollars.
- 47:04Speaker 6: I am.
- 47:08Speaker 2: I'm all for it. The Dave Allen Show on 580
- 47:10Speaker 2: Live brought to you in part by the Charleston Dirty Birds.
- 47:12Speaker 2: The birds are on the road this week at Lexington,
- 47:15Speaker 2: and they're at High Point after that.
- 47:16Speaker 1: They are back.
- 47:17Speaker 2: At GoMart Ballpark, September 11th. Check out DirtyBirdsBaseball.com. Going back
- 47:21Speaker 2: to yesterday's show, somebody took an issue with me, and
- 47:24Speaker 2: that's okay, because they referred to Shelley Moore Capital as
- 47:27Speaker 2: being feckless, and I left that out. They had a
- 47:29Speaker 2: problem with that. And I understand what they're saying. They
- 47:33Speaker 2: texted back and said, calling someone ineffective when they are
- 47:37Speaker 2: ineffective is not name-calling. Calling Shelley ugly or dumb is name-calling,
- 47:40Speaker 2: which the texter did not do. Calling Shelley feckless is
- 47:44Speaker 2: just what happens when when West Virginia has not become
- 47:47Speaker 2: better in her tenure as a federal delegate. OK, fair point.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Fair point. Text says Pete Hegseth sure is destroying the
- 47:54Speaker 2: command structure of the military. This is called winning, you
- 47:57Speaker 2: liberal losers. Text, farmers in our country are under attack
- 48:04Speaker 2: by right wing Republicans. We need to stand with our farmers. Text, Dave,
- 48:10Speaker 2: it's great to see and hear WVRC media covering West
- 48:12Speaker 2: Virginia State University football program and games. During my first
- 48:15Speaker 2: year of college there in 2011, the only coverage football
- 48:18Speaker 2: games got was through the ragtag campus radio station ran
- 48:21Speaker 2: by a handful of audiovisual students, myself included. The signal
- 48:25Speaker 2: reached to maybe Dunbar, and we had about 16 listeners.
- 48:27Speaker 2: In 2011, it was especially tough to cover the games
- 48:31Speaker 2: as the team lost every single game that year. So
- 48:33Speaker 2: here is to moving up. So speaking of money, as
- 48:40Speaker 2: I was earlier, Stephen, I appreciate that text, by the way.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Very nice text. Stephen Allen Adams of Ogden Newspapers out
- 48:47Speaker 2: with some interesting reporting over the last couple of days
- 48:50Speaker 2: about the America 250 celebration at the Capitol in and
- 48:53Speaker 2: around the 4th of July. He's got the numbers and
- 48:57Speaker 2: the invoices and the governor's office had set aside about
- 49:01Speaker 2: two million dollars. To cover everything as best I understand
- 49:05Speaker 2: it and to keep the attractions free to the public. Well,
- 49:11Speaker 2: that's good, but there's no such thing as free and
- 49:13Speaker 2: somebody had to pay for it. And that would be us.
- 49:17Speaker 2: They spent two hundred sixteen thousand dollars. to Stevens reporting
- 49:21Speaker 2: the invoices. They spent $ 216, 000 just for the audio and video,
- 49:27Speaker 2: if that gives you any idea of how expensive this
- 49:30Speaker 2: thing was. Now, as somebody who has been part of
- 49:33Speaker 2: promoting events in the past, I understand that. how important
- 49:37Speaker 2: and how expensive good audiovisual can be. I get that.
- 49:41Speaker 2: That's a chunk of change. And they set aside, the
- 49:45Speaker 2: governor did about $ 2 million for the entire thing. Now,
- 49:47Speaker 2: according to Stephen, about $ 2. 2 has already been paid out
- 49:51Speaker 2: either for what went on at the Capitol for the
- 49:53Speaker 2: state's booth or also at the Great American State Fair
- 49:56Speaker 2: or the National Mall in D.C. That giant Ferris wheel
- 49:59Speaker 2: that seemed to be garnering a lot of attention looks
- 50:02Speaker 2: like about $ 350, 000 today. And the group Alabama, $ 300, 000. $ 72, 000
- 50:09Speaker 2: for all the pyro. $ 56, 000 for the symphony. Marshall Tucker band,
- 50:18Speaker 2: a mere $ 50, 000, etc., etc. You can read Stephen's story
- 50:22Speaker 2: about it at his various sites. It's got a link
- 50:26Speaker 2: to all of his social media, Ogden newspapers, Wheeling Intelligencer,
- 50:29Speaker 2: a bunch of other papers as well. Not hard to
- 50:31Speaker 2: find at all. And all that. with a bigger party
- 50:36Speaker 2: two miles away with the regatta paid for primarily by
- 50:41Speaker 2: sponsor dollars and not by tax dollars. Tech says Metro
- 50:46Speaker 2: News must have their retirement accounts invested in tech companies
- 50:49Speaker 2: and data centers. Well, you know, we don't discuss how
- 50:53Speaker 2: we invest our retirement. What is a retirement anyway? I
- 50:56Speaker 2: have absolutely no intentions of ever, ever retiring. I'll just
- 51:00Speaker 2: drop dead on the mic, or Ryan will just cut
- 51:02Speaker 2: the mic, one of the two. Quickly, students and staff
- 51:05Speaker 2: at GW got the day off today because of HVAC issues.
- 51:08Speaker 2: They actually closed the school early yesterday. Hopefully, they'll be
- 51:11Speaker 2: able to get that fixed and get them young'uns. back
- 51:14Speaker 2: to school. Tomorrow, hopefully get them back tomorrow, I should say. Quickly,
- 51:19Speaker 2: there are cooling centers set up around the city due
- 51:21Speaker 2: to the heat wave. They're at 1015 Smith Street, 830-7,
- 51:25Speaker 2: at the Neighborhood Shop, 300 West Washington Street, 11-7, and
- 51:29Speaker 2: at the Martin Luther King Center, 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.
- 51:32Speaker 2: All right, got to go. See you later today on
- 51:34Speaker 2: Metro News Midday. The Talk Line Boys are live at
- 51:36Speaker 2: the Greenbrier. They'll be coming up at 10.06 tomorrow on
- 51:38Speaker 2: the show. New Kanawha County Commissioner Austin Gessel and Joe
- 51:41Speaker 2: Stevens from the city of Nitro. We'll see you then.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Until then, have fun and love somebody.
