Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: On Accepting 'Both' & Letting Go Of Control
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, Emily a body here. You are listening to
- 0:23Speaker 1: a five minute Friday from Hurdle. This is kind of wild.
- 0:28Speaker 1: It's kind of wild because I am about to say
- 0:30Speaker 1: a sentence that I cannot even I mean, I believe
- 0:34Speaker 1: it because I lived it, but I can't believe I'm
- 0:35Speaker 1: about to say it. My Birkenstock campaign comes out today.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I shot a global campaign for Birkenstock earlier this year,
- 0:45Speaker 1: in January, and there were so many steps, in phases
- 0:49Speaker 1: and parts of this that I won't even get into now.
- 0:52Speaker 1: But I am in utter disbelief that this moment is
- 0:58Speaker 1: finally here. I'm and disbelief for so many reasons, primarily
- 1:02Speaker 1: because there were so many points in my journey of entrepreneurship,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and there have been so many points that I have
- 1:10Speaker 1: felt as though I was doing something wrong, that I
- 1:13Speaker 1: haven't been doing enough, that I am completely missing the mark,
- 1:17Speaker 1: that I need help, and all these things can be
- 1:19Speaker 1: true at different moments, But on a daylight today where
- 1:23Speaker 1: I can say a sentence like that, I am utterly
- 1:28Speaker 1: almost beside myself. And that is not entirely what I
- 1:33Speaker 1: want to talk about on the podcast today. What I
- 1:36Speaker 1: want to talk about today on the show is really
- 1:38Speaker 1: the sense of duality that I've really been lingering in
- 1:41Speaker 1: lately and something that I experienced in the creation of
- 1:45Speaker 1: this campaign. So for context, it's a video that will
- 1:50Speaker 1: now live on the Birkenstock website. It went live on
- 1:54Speaker 1: social media or is going live depending on when you're
- 1:57Speaker 1: listening to this on June fourteenth at nine am, and
- 2:03Speaker 1: I was so scared to shoot this campaign, and it
- 2:06Speaker 1: had nothing to do about the product itself. I have
- 2:09Speaker 1: been wearing Birkenstocks for as long as I can remember.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I believe I got my first pair maybe around fourteen
- 2:17Speaker 1: fifteen years old, and I think that I had a
- 2:21Speaker 1: pair of Birkenstocks from age eighteen to age thirty, like
- 2:26Speaker 1: the exact same pair that I had so much love
- 2:29Speaker 1: and affection for. Needless to say, my purpose for wearing
- 2:33Speaker 1: Birkenstocks certainly evolved over time. For a long time, it
- 2:38Speaker 1: was just a shoe that everyone was wearing that I
- 2:40Speaker 1: loved the way that it looked, it was comfortable, and
- 2:43Speaker 1: so I too owned a pair. But as I became
- 2:47Speaker 1: more active in my pursuit of a different lifestyle, Birkenstock
- 2:51Speaker 1: became the companion to all the exciting things that I
- 2:55Speaker 1: did in the goals that I set. So if I
- 2:57Speaker 1: was going to run a five K round Central, I
- 3:00Speaker 1: would bring a pair of Birkenstocks to change into after
- 3:03Speaker 1: When I ran Tokyo, I put a pair of Birkenstocks
- 3:06Speaker 1: in my gear check bag. For me, a pair of
- 3:09Speaker 1: Birkenstocks has always been like the symbol that the effort
- 3:12Speaker 1: is done, and now it's time to give back to myself.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Now it's time to recover. And the reason that I
- 3:19Speaker 1: was worried about this campaign is because it's really scary
- 3:23Speaker 1: to let go of your likeness. I know two things
- 3:26Speaker 1: to be true. I am excited, am grateful over the
- 3:31Speaker 1: moon about the opportunity to collaborate with a brand that
- 3:34Speaker 1: has been part of my life since I was fourteen.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And I am also very scared about how I might
- 3:42Speaker 1: look on camera when I don't have any ounce of
- 3:45Speaker 1: control about what ultimately goes into the world, period hard stop.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And I want to tell you that letting go of
- 3:54Speaker 1: my inhibitions is the thing that enabled me to both
- 3:59Speaker 1: show up presently as myself the day that we shot this,
- 4:02Speaker 1: which was back in January of twenty twenty four, and
- 4:06Speaker 1: now when I saw the footage and I first saw
- 4:09Speaker 1: the campaign maybe about a month ago, I was floored.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I was floored because A I had the opportunity to
- 4:16Speaker 1: tell my story and talk about what my journey has
- 4:20Speaker 1: been like with running authentically. But then B I looked
- 4:23Speaker 1: at my body and I felt so strong, I felt
- 4:27Speaker 1: so capable, and I feel so grateful for the way
- 4:31Speaker 1: that I showed up for myself emotionally physically, and not
- 4:35Speaker 1: just on that day, but over the years, right there
- 4:39Speaker 1: has been so much work that has happened, so much
- 4:43Speaker 1: effort that has happened. And so when I look at
- 4:47Speaker 1: a little clip, the one that's going live on Instagram
- 4:51Speaker 1: is like thirty seconds. The ultimate video spot is around
- 4:54Speaker 1: sixty seconds. And when I look at this video, I
- 4:58Speaker 1: feel so proud. And that goes back to the duality
- 5:02Speaker 1: that I talked about. I can be, in certain instances
- 5:06Speaker 1: proud and critical. I can feel both happy and emotional,
- 5:12Speaker 1: happy and sad. This instance of both is the human experience,
- 5:19Speaker 1: and so I think that so often, especially the clips
- 5:24Speaker 1: that we see on social media, we hear it all
- 5:27Speaker 1: the time. It's the highlight reel. And so the real
- 5:31Speaker 1: behind this major moment for me was that I was
- 5:34Speaker 1: so anxious and nervous about showing up on camera that day.
- 5:38Speaker 1: But what I can tell you is that now when
- 5:40Speaker 1: I look at this footage of myself, when I see myself,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I am so proud of this woman that I have become.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I am so proud of the fact that I can
- 5:50Speaker 1: sit here and say that I have put my all
- 5:53Speaker 1: not only into my work, into building this brand, the
- 5:57Speaker 1: brand that I will continue to evolve and build over
- 5:59Speaker 1: it tis time, but also my body, the body that I
- 6:03Speaker 1: have propelled to so many finish lines, but also the
- 6:06Speaker 1: body that I have empowered to recover in the best
- 6:10Speaker 1: way that I know possible, knowing that that recovery is
- 6:14Speaker 1: exactly what I need to go after the next goal
- 6:18Speaker 1: and the next goal. And so my question for you
- 6:21Speaker 1: this week on five Minute Friday is what you're both?
- 6:25Speaker 1: What are you experiencing right now that you feel torn
- 6:28Speaker 1: between two sides, knowing that it is entirely normal to
- 6:32Speaker 1: have so many different feelings about your lived experience, and
- 6:35Speaker 1: how can you show up for yourself to offer a
- 6:38Speaker 1: little bit more compassion about it? What is your both
- 6:42Speaker 1: and how can you offer yourself a little bit more
- 6:45Speaker 1: compassion as you navigate the ins and the outs of
- 6:49Speaker 1: your day today. And now a listener question.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Hi Emily, this is Trish from Staten Island. What book
- 6:57Speaker 2: or books do you love so much that you've read
- 7:00Speaker 2: over and over again. You've given copies to your friends,
- 7:03Speaker 2: You've bought other people copies, always looking for a good
- 7:06Speaker 2: book recommendation.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Thanks so much, this is a really great question. And
- 7:11Speaker 1: right now, let me tell you about this book that
- 7:13Speaker 1: has me hooked. It's called A Gentle Reminder by Bianga Sparasino,
- 7:19Speaker 1: and I found it on the street last week. This
- 7:23Speaker 1: book is speaking to my soul. It's got so many
- 7:26Speaker 1: good nuggets in it and I want to quickly read
- 7:30Speaker 1: a passage from it to share with you. Maybe you
- 7:34Speaker 1: will never get back to the person you used to be,
- 7:37Speaker 1: but maybe that is okay. Maybe that is something to celebrate,
- 7:41Speaker 1: something to embrace, because who you were is a version
- 7:44Speaker 1: of yourself that exists in the past, a version of
- 7:48Speaker 1: yourself that didn't go through the heartbreak or the hardship,
- 7:51Speaker 1: a version of yourself that did not have to navigate
- 7:54Speaker 1: all of the ways in which life was trying to
- 7:57Speaker 1: weather it. Who you were is a version of yourself
- 8:00Speaker 1: that didn't have to fight their way out of the
- 8:02Speaker 1: dark that didn't have to deal with the things that
- 8:05Speaker 1: cause change to crack within the soul of you, and
- 8:09Speaker 1: those things transform a human being. This book that I
- 8:14Speaker 1: found on the street last week, Yeah, it's going to
- 8:17Speaker 1: be my gift for the rest of twenty twenty four.
- 8:21Speaker 1: That's it for right now. Make sure you're following along
- 8:24Speaker 1: over on social It's at Hurdle Podcast at Emily Body.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next. Timetastassas, assassass
