- 0:33I'm so drunk. Welcome back to handsome blunt.
- 0:43Penknife the Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 0:47It's a very hot day, it is. Oh, hello.
- 0:51Well, I'm here. Who you become your podcast
- 0:54husband's you that is amazing. My salacious podcasting husband
- 0:59currently in my bedroom again, sweating a lot that's got the
- 1:04Brigadier out already. That's how rumors start.
- 1:10Okay, so I Come to visit for the day.
- 1:12I have this form and put it. It's a bit of an anniversary
- 1:15Summit. Today is our one year.
- 1:18Anniversary is of the first time, I recorded in your
- 1:20bedroom, my bedroom and he wrote the word husband
- 1:36around, you know, willy-nilly that's true and I can assure
- 1:40you, he's Willie is not now. Oh no.
- 1:41That's why we're here today. Well we could have recorder
- 1:49hamster hamster, or for an episode of a much-maligned
- 1:59season. Yes, of New Hope.
- 2:02Yes. Much wind will usually by you.
- 2:05It is, I, I think this season is the worst season of new who,
- 2:08however, I think this is a stunningly good episode.
- 2:13Yes, proof if it was ever needed that gold can be found, buried
- 2:17amongst any kind of shit. Exactly.
- 2:20That's what I always think about under the lake, which is the
- 2:27gold in them in my least favorite season of Doctor.
- 2:30Who did you have a classic season but you don't like but
- 2:32there's something in it. You really like what?
- 2:34This is. Victor.
- 2:35I don't think there's a classic season that I don't like there
- 2:39are lots that. Taken as a whole, they are very
- 2:45wearing like season 15, which has real Highs, but as a whole,
- 2:50or if I'm wrong. Yeah.
- 2:51But as a whole, you know, you watch the one after the other
- 2:53and you've got lots of. Yeah.
- 2:55Age-old. Address at the end of the
- 2:56season. Yeah.
- 2:57Why you get to? Yeah.
- 3:00And it's a bit of a slog overall but actually I think no, I
- 3:04annoying is wears me down a bit. Yeah, just stop, stop stop.
- 3:11Has the Paladin by. Not that one of these on there
- 3:13that are like, shit, you know? I haven't done that.
- 3:17Oh, I'll tell you off camera. Alright, fair enough, everyone's
- 3:22a little contentious to be re-recorded.
- 3:26Sure right. Okay, so we are talking about a
- 3:30town called Mercy. We are they which is the it was
- 3:34sort of movie of the week. Well, that's the idea, wasn't
- 3:37it? Yeah, that everything because
- 3:39I'd been so off base. It's the year before and haven't
- 3:43quite worked. Yeah.
- 3:44That Steven Moffat in the usual Steven Moffat way when no that
- 3:48didn't work. We're gonna try something
- 3:49completely different and everything's got to be big and
- 3:52bold and have a movie poster. Yes, and has a stroke.
- 4:04And then they changed the logo every week, and made the title
- 4:09sequence worse every single week while putting Photoshop filters
- 4:13over. Yeah.
- 4:14And this is absolutely. Now, I think, I genuinely think
- 4:18this is one of Matt Smith's best perform.
- 4:20Yeah, I've been, this is one of his best stories, but I think
- 4:23after Amy and Rory leaves is where his performance
- 4:27essentially devolves into a series of tics and quirks and
- 4:31the writing does as well. Yes.
- 4:33I don't think the writing supports him particularly well,
- 4:36and they such a shame because I think his performance in series
- 4:395 as mush, it loves me to say, it's some of the best doctors
- 4:45perform. This is there are, yeah, because
- 4:46he's completely unhindered by any kind of history and he's
- 4:50just making it up and he's really inspired by what he's got
- 4:53to work with that said I miss them vulnerable.
- 4:56Matt Smith in Vincent and the doctor.
- 4:58Yeah. Is think it's superb possible.
- 5:01Yeah and this is and I've been Once the writers latch onto
- 5:05certain things in his performance then that's all.
- 5:08He's got to hook it on. Whereas in the early days he was
- 5:11just going wherever he wanted because the scripts weren't
- 5:15necessarily tailored for him specifically.
- 5:17They were tailored for his doctor or so Sally was waving
- 5:20the screwdriver her time. Yeah.
- 5:22And you know like very it was all and you say wearying that's
- 5:28a good word. I think that the doctor I was
- 5:31like, oh you just go. All right.
- 5:33The Grump, I always think it's a shame in some ways that
- 5:39nightmare in silver wasn't earlier in his rum because I
- 5:42think good doctor versus Bad Doctor.
- 5:45I said earlier idea is brilliant and he should have done it
- 5:48really well but it didn't quite come together in the way that it
- 5:52should have done. It should have been really
- 5:54interesting and but it just didn't quite gel.
- 5:59I think it's a real shame because in series 7 Which I
- 6:04write a lot. I really like dinosaurs on a
- 6:06spaceship town called Mercy. Power of free, pop, the last
- 6:10minutes and H take man and the snowman as well.
- 6:13Wow, but I think, you know me, I am not an advocate for Matt.
- 6:18Smith's doctor you are not or for Karen gillan's.
- 6:20Amy Poehler. No, a door, Rory all the way
- 6:23through, but there is something very magical about their
- 6:26characterization in this season, where there's suddenly digits
- 6:29all very comfortable with each other, and they're just having
- 6:32fun Amy's, kind of dish. Esther anxieties apart from
- 6:34Asylum of the Daleks, you'll know I did not mention that.
- 6:37And she's very confident, and she's this sort of, I don't
- 6:41know, she's like this ideal companion, that I feel like she
- 6:44could have been all along, she's investigating in dinosaurs and
- 6:47especially if she's calling him out in this one, calling them
- 6:49out in this one power free. It's that wonderful thing about
- 6:53them, their home life, yet away from him and not being quite
- 6:56able to him useful scene between them outside.
- 6:59Yeah. Oh yes.
- 7:01And then Angels, Take Manhattan where she finally makes that
- 7:03choice. Choose Rory over the doctor
- 7:06which is should be done. Like you just fine for entirety
- 7:11and I'll tell you it happened years back.
- 7:12No I'm not too sure about that site before we go into the
- 7:16carpentry. Yes I believe that you have done
- 7:19a little bit of I did throw it out to the hand fan.
- 7:24Hello, ham fan. Hello everybody.
- 7:26Will some questions? So I've got some very
- 7:29interesting ones. There's one here from Doc
- 7:32oh-hoo-hoo-hoo. Ever, he is Allah says have you
- 7:35read that blog of it? Yeah it goes quite slow
- 7:37disabilities insightful yeah a charismatic intelligent.
- 7:40What's the asking is Doc oh ho really handsome.
- 7:45Well that's me. It's huge.
- 7:47Oh well sorry what someone of course it is straightaway.
- 7:59Okay well I suppose some of these questions to you because
- 8:02we have Seagal. 19 overall wasn't a roping as a 19-0.
- 8:09My word I can't find the thread. Now you better right guys?
- 8:12Well I'm okay. Well there was a question from
- 8:17our great friend Fraser Gregory. Which says why are you doing the
- 8:20girl who waited? This is because we've had a long
- 8:23contentious conversation this week about why we gots do which
- 8:27stories we're doing, and why we're not doing it because we
- 8:30love you. Yes.
- 8:31And also because I flipped locked And remember the story
- 8:34that I like even more that hadn't been done.
- 8:37I've got a question for you. Okay from lit roundels.
- 8:40Oh yeah right lovely look around us.
- 8:42Yeah look at that little Avatar picture.
- 8:44He's very handsome, isn't he? It's just up.
- 8:46The road is Rosalee, we got his number not on my notes.
- 8:51If a town called Mercy, was your first Doctor Who episode would
- 8:55it have made you a fan. Whoo.
- 8:57Now it's very, that's a really really great question.
- 9:00That is a great question so is every story?
- 9:02Yeah, absolutely. Only because there are some that
- 9:06you can instantly. See, yes, this would have done.
- 9:09This is as we will find out when we do the commentary itself,
- 9:15raises really interesting questions about the morality of
- 9:20the doctor. And it's very interesting and I
- 9:23think if this was your first story, I think that would be
- 9:26something that you might get your hands on and big.
- 9:29Yeah, I could could go for this. Like, but it also depends I
- 9:33think whether you like westerns up which I generally don't know
- 9:38if I like this one, too. Doctor Who restaurants?
- 9:42However, Was visually stunning? Yeah.
- 9:53Oh absolutely. It's HD, isn't it?
- 9:56There's yeah they moved HD. Yeah, with Matt's well with the
- 9:59specials, at the end of season, 14 May series for.
- 10:03But yeah, and I don't know, is it?
- 10:06I really doctor Hui idea, though?
- 10:10Or is this A Sci-Fi story that you could tell in other series,
- 10:16does that make a difference about whether it would make you
- 10:19a doctor who fan is a very, very it is a very good question,
- 10:23isn't it? Because this is the client, this
- 10:25is also, I think it feels like a very Star Trek, the Next
- 10:31Generation idea of their meeting someone who's morally ambiguous,
- 10:39because it's like that. Does what he's done now?
- 10:48Pencil out his crimes. Yeah, it's not very Doctor Who
- 10:53which is what I think is interesting about.
- 10:55Yeah, why --this why --this stands out?
- 10:57So I'm not sure whether it's a would make you a fan of Doctor
- 11:00Who, but if you're a fan of sci-fi, this is a very yeah,
- 11:04although, this is where they started with the doctors travels
- 11:07got off in time and space anywhere.
- 11:09And they went to this Western. Yeah, I would say it's a very
- 11:11strange place to start. Yes, somewhere in the first
- 11:13season. Maybe.
- 11:14Yeah. Once everything is that, as you
- 11:17gonna say that, For the Next Generation episode.
- 11:19Yes, what does I've seen them all this pain?
- 11:22The data's. Yeah.
- 11:24Oh, what is directed by Patrick Stewart?
- 11:26Yeah language. Yeah, it's very self-indulgent.
- 11:29Yes comparison, okay, well one more question.
- 11:33Okay, before we going, all right, I do it.
- 11:35Should we should we actually do the question that was asked
- 11:37three or four times. Okay, well off you go.
- 11:42So my lovely old friend, I shouldn't say old friend, my
- 11:45lovely friend Jillian. Ask this question as did some
- 11:51other people and one that we scroll through here, it's a very
- 11:54important question is the always magnificent Pete, Lambert's or
- 11:59sis question and lovely hand from member or all?
- 12:05Remember Joe's shorts. Oh yes, this question bleep.
- 12:09No more is waiting for you, which is Why isn't there a song?
- 12:17Would it be improved to be improved with a song?
- 12:19There's only one answers that question and that is yes, yes.
- 12:23And as David ready. Lovely David Randy says, can you
- 12:27imagine if Linda burum had made a cameo singing in the bar down?
- 12:34Because she was on the books at this point because she's back
- 12:37wide and 70 closing time could have just cut They would have
- 12:45been a lovely, lovely being for the fans.
- 12:47Well, just For Your Entertainment and edification.
- 12:50Okay, I believe we've got some lyrics here as written by hand
- 12:55fan member. Steven Alexander right, well,
- 12:58what's he done now? There were Cowboys and stuff all
- 13:02around the place. Amy said, talk to your very old.
- 13:06See, oh no. Got it.
- 13:08All wrong dr. Rolled this way, any pulled her
- 13:12face and all this happened in a town called Mercy, I'll bring
- 13:16back Linda, powered. All Is Forgiven.
- 13:20Thanks. Thanks for the lyrics.
- 13:21So Steven, even though it went a bit wrong.
- 13:23Yes, well I never mind. So I think we should study
- 13:25episode okay? Because people will indulge us
- 13:28to answer to idiots so we're gonna head into the episode now
- 13:37but we'll do some more questions.
- 13:38Yeah. Well that.
- 13:38Oh yeah. And there's some more questions
- 13:40at the end and some some things we will touch on as we go along.
- 13:44I believe, excuse me. What are you going to be
- 13:46touching as you go along questions?
- 13:48Joe. Nice.
- 13:49Try, you dirty bitch. Okay, right, well count with me
- 13:54in five, four, three, two, one. Go ride em, cowboy.
- 14:02Oh god, I've got the sound all hang out, sound odd.
- 14:03But no saint, but we've got an opening narration.
- 14:06We don't get opening narration very often.
- 14:08Do we do? You know what you've got?
- 14:10You've got to misdirections in the opening.
- 14:13Yes, because Looks like it's going to be a Sci-Fi moon
- 14:17adventure. Well, she says about a man who
- 14:20came into town from yeah, stars, who is supposed to bring?
- 14:23That is Doctor Who, right? And then he says, oh, I'm
- 14:27looking for the Doctor, Who is he?
- 14:29I think he's talking about the docks are right and in both
- 14:32cases it's not the doctor. No laughing, that's very clever.
- 14:37I just like to give a shout out to fellow hand fan member
- 14:41Brandon Jones, who I watch this episode with when it was first
- 14:45broadcast and we had agreed. A yes, we we could come up with
- 14:50a theory. I think that in series 7 a
- 14:53there's going to be something about flickering like bulbs,
- 14:56that were going to be really important because they're in
- 14:58every bloody sorry doll accessories, Focus.
- 15:00Yeah, I think, you know what? It was going to be something.
- 15:05Oh and right. And then go about it.
- 15:07He had a lot on his plate and 7p he did.
- 15:11They've made these not great titles.
- 15:14Look, even worse. Here happened there.
- 15:16Yeah. Well you can't really see what's
- 15:17really there. It's all very yellow.
- 15:18And what are the clouds all about those?
- 15:21Someone said it's like the Gaviscon advert that was on.
- 15:49Yes. Gold complex.
- 15:56Yes, although we say that both the vampires of Venice and
- 16:02school reunions both are stories that are sorted out by switching
- 16:07things off. I will so vampires of Venice.
- 16:10I do me a very great if I'm honest.
- 16:12I think. I think it's, that's his most
- 16:14trihard or yes. I think he's doing something
- 16:19quite clever with the Western because he does touch upon all
- 16:23the cliches. Yes.
- 16:25But man, westerns are dry as dust.
- 16:27Uh-huh. And like, you get like the
- 16:30places that they filmed. This is a lot of fun.
- 16:32There's a lot of energy out here.
- 16:36We've got got strangers coming into town, The everyone is
- 16:41carrying away. We're going to walk into the
- 16:43tavern and excuse me, if Amy Pond walked into your town.
- 16:46Yeah, I don't get carried away. Look at and you've got the bit
- 16:50where they walk into the into the tavern, and it all goes
- 16:54silent is all the cliches that you want.
- 16:57While he goes, what was it? I'll have tea.
- 16:59Yes, make it strong. The bag is trying to choose a
- 17:03stick. Uh-huh, Jerry so cute in this.
- 17:06He is And this is how I've been kept his doctor.
- 17:11This is he's trying to be cool but he's just not know what, but
- 17:16he is, but he is because he's got a weird Paradox.
- 17:20Exactly, I. So, here we go, we've got the
- 17:22thugs in the bar here. Yeah, we've got people and I've
- 17:27returning Doctor Who star, what in that bar, in that bar, as the
- 17:32Undertaker, we've got Gary hagen.
- 17:35Oh, chi chi. Yes.
- 17:37No. Really Jerry talking alaria
- 17:39sadness, do you know the bit where?
- 17:41Yeah, you got the bar went. Yeah, son.
- 17:47You could stay just one thing, Matt Smith does exceedingly.
- 17:53Well, I know you're gonna say, does a lot is, say, yes.
- 17:55Is he does play the old man in the young man's.
- 17:58But, yes, there are those carrot cake.
- 18:00I see spice. I did not know that it's been a
- 18:04long time since the mutant is very, pretty, was very pretty
- 18:07nice. Um, so it's number know, you got
- 18:10those people's numbers, you know, and there's something
- 18:15about that specific moment. I really want to talk about it
- 18:17later. Okay.
- 18:18One particular scene, which I think is one of the best scenes
- 18:21in knew, who I know the one you're going to talk about
- 18:24because I don't think Matt Smith plays angra anger very well.
- 18:28And in this episode, he does something so interesting with
- 18:32the scene. Where he's angry.
- 18:33Yes, I'll put that on pause. Wait till the I said cuz he's
- 18:38now Billy Chops out, that's it. We're about to be introduced to
- 18:42the delicious Ben Browder. We are.
- 18:45Oh, my goodness. So sorry, would you rather than
- 18:48just been prouder? Oh my goodness, I love Ben
- 18:51Browder. So, you met him.
- 18:52I did meet a guy. I met him at.
- 18:54Gallifrey, Gallifrey the convention.
- 18:58Gallifrey one back in the day in 2013, so not long after he'd
- 19:02done this. And he still had the mustache
- 19:05and he was looking mighty. Fine.
- 19:06I have to say can you say You touched his ass.
- 19:09I did. We had the photos taken by a
- 19:14very good thing to have done, but how could you not?
- 19:18I was quite excited because I was massive fan of Farscape.
- 19:21Yes, came out, I've got box it in the other room and I so I
- 19:26figured oh wow. This is going to be a like a
- 19:28massive party actually is it says it's a surprisingly small
- 19:31part and he's bumped off about Bruce Willis.
- 19:36Yeah. And it's a shame.
- 19:38Yes, he's really, really good. He is he awfully convinces?
- 19:41Yes, in the role that he's playing, but I just figured that
- 19:44and I know, you know, you know, me as a regular criticism of
- 19:47this era but I think they bring in actors, like good acts.
- 19:50Yes. And don't give them enough to
- 19:51do. I think this is actually enough,
- 19:54but I would have liked to have seen him in.
- 19:55Yes, maybe do something a bit me to, basically he runs off of
- 19:59Rory, doesn't it? Yes, that's right.
- 20:01Yeah, thank you. Yeah, and then he's there during
- 20:05the big confrontation scene with Jax, then he's killed.
- 20:08Offal that. Yeah, because they want to make
- 20:11the doctor the Marshal so that he can do the, the end Showdown
- 20:16really, isn't it? I mean, the real guest star in
- 20:19this episode is Adrian. Scarborough?
- 20:21Yes, who is absolutely wonderful.
- 20:24I think that my wonderful his. Yes.
- 20:27And one of those performances that doesn't get talked about
- 20:30often enough. I think, you know, well, I
- 20:31didn't really see him do before, if what's that was that very
- 20:35Comic character? He plays in Miranda, whereas
- 20:38Blah of crisps of you say no, no, I'm obscene Miranda.
- 20:43It's already is a basically. I thank this part here is very
- 20:45funny but then after this, I saw his performance in very British
- 20:51Scandal. Yes.
- 20:52And he's brilliant in that. It's outstandingly.
- 20:55Good. But I still think this is the
- 20:57best thing I've seen him. Do he around this time, he was
- 21:00in the Revival of Upstairs Downstairs and he was the Butler
- 21:06and he was very good, very repressed.
- 21:08Man that because I was quite excited to see him in Doctor Who
- 21:12after that. So yeah, it's interesting.
- 21:15What impresses me most is he has to play the role initially.
- 21:21Very sort of amiably. Yes.
- 21:23Like he's the good guy, but he has to play in a way so that
- 21:27when the twist comes, you can see both sides.
- 21:31Yeah. Of his character.
- 21:33And you do, if you watch him in these early scenes, he's kind of
- 21:36poison you looking at, You're very sympathetic towards him
- 21:40because anybody saying very warm things about 80, you must be a
- 21:43mother. Yeah, like that, that makes you
- 21:45really warm to him. But then, when the Swiss here,
- 21:47so I'm going, yeah, there was something odd about.
- 21:49Yeah. There's, there's always an
- 21:52undertone. There's always something.
- 21:55It's like this sort here where he's very upright and thing but
- 22:01there's something in his eyes, it creepy, and yeah.
- 22:04Yeah, very much so. Do you know what I think it is I
- 22:09feel I feel like it is the sort of performers that you would
- 22:12have got in the classic series. From a, yes probability should
- 22:15have cataracts and this is exactly what he is.
- 22:18Yeah, I love the doctor. Being a fan of the race, don't
- 22:24great things and That's where and mouths like bulk.
- 22:30Yes pretty much less Mass me feeders like a kid.
- 22:36He does, that's why the makeup is very interesting as well.
- 23:01So, is this? I'm going to hit you with a
- 23:03question. Okay.
- 23:04Which was one of the questions we were asked?
- 23:06Is this a historical or is this leaning into a genre are?
- 23:13Now that was from Tom, wasn't it?
- 23:15Yeah. So, it's all good as my
- 23:17question. My question, exactly.
- 23:22I don't think this is a historical.
- 23:25Is leaning into the all the tropes that you want from a
- 23:28western and it's using the Western to deal with an
- 23:32interesting more adult moral dilemma.
- 23:35Yeah, I think that's that's where we are because I think if
- 23:38this was a historical Doctor, Who it would be dealing with
- 23:43something that happened in the old west that we like the
- 23:46gunfighters. Yes.
- 23:47And I'm tired of this isn't doing that.
- 23:49It's using it as a setting because you hate set.
- 23:53Yes, where was this field? I'm somewhere In Spain, wasn't
- 23:56it? Al meriya.
- 23:56Sometimes there's an age where they film westerns the thing is
- 24:01that b, is the standing set. They couldn't do with the gun
- 24:04Fighters. They did try with like that.
- 24:05Yeah, active. Shawn is have that sense of
- 24:08space? Yes.
- 24:09It might be that really system. Yeah, that you're in the middle
- 24:12of nowhere. While healing usually they're in
- 24:14these Canyons that same. Absolutely.
- 24:17It's hot. And this is something that yes
- 24:19really is. It's just I'm so met steam,
- 24:23hissing, I think he did it. In series 7 so I am Alex.
- 24:28Yeah, it's hotdogs. All right but looks amazing.
- 24:31Yeah he comes back for some at the end of the year, I've carved
- 24:38on my preparation. You know, I'm he just the
- 24:42snowmen. I also would like to dish out
- 24:47some praise for marigolds very playful score in this.
- 24:51Yes, it's fun. It's like it's almost like
- 24:53playing a banjo. Yeah.
- 24:54It's a fairy. Again, it's a western score so
- 24:57he's infused because he knows how to do this.
- 25:00So I transfer up to you. Yes.
- 25:01You think you could get away with this joke now.
- 25:03No, we're here because I think everyone would jump the horses
- 25:06call. Susan and he wants you to
- 25:08respect his life choices. Each Doctor Who ahead of the
- 25:11game. I think that's funny.
- 25:13Yes, I think that is, you know, that joke that he talks baby.
- 25:18Now we just And the hoses Trends.
- 25:22Yeah, I think that would upset the daily mail.
- 25:30It probably upset the daily mail at the time, if they were
- 25:32watching, but they probably weren't everything up, so that
- 25:35they somehow, you know, do you know?
- 25:36So, I'm gonna grab me a rundown, sorry, Ross has done it, just
- 25:39running around about the moment. Joe, when pre brexit, okay,
- 25:44Daily Mail was just spreading hate, wasn't it?
- 25:46Yeah. Croatian hate their fries are
- 25:48not know. The put on the Shelf everyday,
- 25:49I'll go. To see it, post breaks it.
- 25:52Now the shelves are empty and everything like that.
- 25:54Well, they're whinging about that.
- 25:56I'm not exactly you fucking calls this.
- 25:58What are you stirred up trouble with?
- 26:12This is a very interesting scene between Amy and college X.
- 26:18I like the fact she puts the coat.
- 26:19Yeah. And it's the, your mother aren't
- 26:22you. That's kind.
- 26:24He's it's like he he knows how to play people but she's playing
- 26:28this very still. Yes.
- 26:30Like I think of her Series 5, she's very kind but I think
- 26:35she's wary as well. Yeah.
- 26:38And when he points the gun in her face, I don't think she's
- 26:40entirely no for she's had enough experience at this point to
- 26:44know. What what's going on?
- 26:47And to read people, you know, I'm always had a lot of
- 26:51experience of being shot at and just riding around in a raining
- 26:54and that's fine. And he's looking very nice.
- 26:57How could you just God, look, you got the site.
- 27:17That is a perfect. Great shot, isn't it?
- 27:20Yeah. The horse running across dust
- 27:22the Sun in the sky. Yeah, it's beautiful.
- 27:25Isn't it really? Really good.
- 27:28And we're about to approach a scene of where my co-host from
- 27:33Untitled. Star, Trek project, Nathan
- 27:35bottomley fixes one of Matt Smith's best performances and is
- 27:38a silent performance where he's looking.
- 27:40Yes. And he does it all in his face.
- 27:43Yeah, it is very, very good. I still think the scene in a
- 27:47minute is even better. Yep.
- 27:49Oh yeah, that flashing light bulbs.
- 27:51Yeah he's got some I swear there is something deliberate there
- 27:55isn't. I've been so it it feels like
- 27:59it. Oh, does.
- 28:01So the, the Pod alarm goes off, doesn't it?
- 28:03That's what. Yes, because that and that
- 28:05alerts caught. Ya College X about what's
- 28:07happened, my sorry. I'm gonna basically show you how
- 28:10many podcasts I got that, but my other podcast host.
- 28:13Yes, Zack, Shanahan, he is a rate this episode.
- 28:16Now, he's really not key and he fight, he finds it quite
- 28:19simplistic and he doesn't think the moral dilemma has much depth
- 28:23to it. I disagree.
- 28:25But it is actually quite a simple story.
- 28:27And I like and I think, yeah, it's reflection in the mafia
- 28:32era. Yeah, you there are many simple
- 28:34stories and sometimes that you need that.
- 28:37You need that balance. You know design Android man.
- 28:43The Z. Look like the Terminator.
- 28:44Yeah, he looks like the Terminator and he looks like
- 28:47someone in Red Dwarf as well. Oh my God.
- 28:50The the was not The Inquisitor is it's the one in Justice.
- 28:56Oh, oh yeah, yeah. You looked a bit like Don
- 28:59Henderson's character. Oh, and he's got he's got like a
- 29:06knife in just he has. That's a bit.
- 29:08Yes. Go down.
- 29:11Is he? Okay, off a girl for the one
- 29:12that changed into our, that's right.
- 29:13Isn't he simulant? Yes.
- 29:16Yeah, that is really, yea. That sounds lasted a while since
- 29:18I've watched, we have all sorry. Right duel fans.
- 29:21There were 12 podcast coming to fuck off.
- 29:23Catching me, whereas obviously, as informed as ever that have,
- 29:28you know, is how they literally cannot have the sun in shot
- 29:31enough. And that's because they usually
- 29:33filled me in fucking wails. Yeah.
- 29:34And the sun's never out how the sun's out.
- 29:40Is that they did the location filming for Asylum of the Daleks
- 29:45at the same time. So yeah, Yes, somewhere close by
- 29:50because it was yes. And it was hot, but yet, it's
- 29:54all the same because they had unexpected snow and said all
- 29:59will get out and film something in here, we can do those scenes
- 30:02from Asylum of the Daleks. Can I make?
- 30:05What is it? Might sound like a physician
- 30:07observation but it's not at all. Series 5, Karen Gillan.
- 30:11Look like a girl. Yes, it is Series 7.
- 30:15She looks like a woman. Yes, I think that she's coming
- 30:19up. Yeah.
- 30:19And that but they're also consciously aging her slightly
- 30:24because the because the because the to show the time is passing.
- 30:27So I think they are doing lots of work with the makeup and the
- 30:31way she's dressing to show that change as well.
- 30:33Far be it from me to criticize the Christian way around
- 30:37braised, the mafia era but that The sort of detail you had in
- 30:41this period that your own hummus.
- 30:43Like now, they introduce a character like raffio, she goes
- 30:47off to Earth and then we never hear from me again.
- 30:49Why if it was Morpheus time you'd come back to that?
- 30:52Yeah, she would. Yeah, that would have some
- 30:54pesos. This what nature was talking
- 30:55about of the mats reactions here.
- 30:59So what he's watching. And again, it is all playing on
- 31:03his face and his eyes. There's yellow.
- 31:06Here's a very expressive face Stillness.
- 31:09I didn't tell ya she to him. And just the sounds of the
- 31:14experiments and we're coming up to the scene in a second where
- 31:21Mass me Falconer goes he's lying and basically decides to throw
- 31:28Jack's to his deafness so he basically executing him for his
- 31:33crimes because he's just seeing what he's done there.
- 31:35Yes. And the thing I love about it is
- 31:39the complexity in. Matt Smith's is Equality.
- 31:43Yes, because he's so awkward. He's so angry.
- 31:47He's like a child that has a tantrum.
- 31:49You know how children are yes. And don't know how to cope with
- 31:52it. Yes.
- 31:53And so they're just reading this article and when he when he's
- 31:56kind of throwing him out the room, he's jerky and it's it's
- 32:00really intense. And for once I was watching shit
- 32:03he gets it. Absolutely right.
- 32:05What are other once I was like bye don't know where it's going?
- 32:08No I don't know who really interesting.
- 32:10I said it because there's a need For his performance.
- 32:13As we don't see very often, none of that pain.
- 32:15Is there any more? But then was brilliant about are
- 32:19saying is if then under the car by a me in, what I think is her
- 32:23funniest moment when she shoots the goats and the more time she
- 32:28shoots it, the family area gaze. Yes.
- 32:30Because once is fun. Yeah Sue is funny Bree.
- 32:34Yeah. But that whole scene if that had
- 32:36been played by David Tennant it would have been teeth-gnashing
- 32:39and a bit of eggs are yes and you know me I much prefer do 10.
- 32:43Yeah, but he wouldn't have done that so.
- 32:45Well, I don't think he'd have made those interesting choices.
- 32:48He'd have been very Resolute about what he was doing and it's
- 32:52leaning into Series 5 again, because there's an awkwardness
- 32:54in mass media in the romantic moments.
- 32:56He's a bit all mood, isn't he yet like that?
- 32:59It's all white understand, any kind of emotion that the lodger
- 33:03he doesn't really understand human interaction whilst
- 33:05absolutely acing human interaction.
- 33:09Yeah, so I know this is a question that Dave Rennie asked,
- 33:13is the anger from the doctor in this too much or completely
- 33:17fine. And in character, in your
- 33:18opinion, I think I think is absolutely Justified.
- 33:22Just wait, here all sit down that in is just this doctor
- 33:26doesn't do that. He's The another reason why I
- 33:30think this is one of the best moments in new who it's not just
- 33:34because, for a second, I sat back and was like, what the fuck
- 33:38is going on? Is he going to kill this man?
- 33:40But you have the drama of Amy and Rory and I can see, this is
- 33:44how their characters really work there on opposing sides of this
- 33:47argument. Yes.
- 33:48And they're both giving their opinion and Rory's not Cow by a
- 33:51me anymore because it's just where he stands.
- 33:53Yeah, he's gonna do this. Yeah, exactly, it's so
- 33:57interesting over the Makes are so interesting.
- 34:00You get the drama and then you get the comedy as well.
- 34:03Yeah, it's just great Telly and it's that old old.
- 34:09Big project, isn't it? Goes that we all saw ourselves
- 34:14all the time does does the end justify the means the fact that
- 34:19he ended the war that had been going on for 19 years We'll
- 34:24start Justified. Was it?
- 34:27He did a good thing, but he did it in a bad way.
- 34:30So is it as an old argument that?
- 34:33None of us can all answer that because none of us were there
- 34:36one? None of that was about.
- 34:38I personally, I would say if it meant, one person was tortured
- 34:42horribly? No, no.
- 34:45But I'm very, so, there would be people on the other side of that
- 34:48argument as well. Yeah.
- 34:52But it's not like Doctor Who, but to go into this sort of know
- 34:56and it's a Plex, it's, it's quite nuanced.
- 34:59Every, as you said, Amy and Rory have I think what, what do we do
- 35:05with Jackson here? Yeah, he's a war criminal, but
- 35:08he's the man who saved everyone in the village from cholera.
- 35:12What is the other new Who episode that posed is the exact
- 35:15questions and had the exact level of moral complexity?
- 35:19That is also criminally underrated. is well, I was
- 35:23actually going to say The Day of the Doctor oh which actually
- 35:28deals with pretty much the same question of the doctor using the
- 35:33moment is that justified because you're going to end the war but
- 35:37he's going to kill everyone and that how do you answer that
- 35:42question about whether that is Justified its dealing with
- 35:46exactly the same question it but without the torture and there's
- 35:50but there's a lot Other things diverting your attention.
- 35:53Yes, I was thinking of Boomtown. Oh yeah, yes, they have to
- 36:00decide what to do with. Yeah.
- 36:02So gorgeous. I think that Boomtown explores
- 36:06it in a more interesting way because it's somebody that has
- 36:10wronged the doctor. Yes.
- 36:11Where is this is, this is a crime that the doctor is
- 36:14judging. Someone on the doctor, he said,
- 36:17pletely responsible with punishment as yes.
- 36:21So, it's that such an interesting Dynamic.
- 36:23Where is this is a doctor coming in after all the events?
- 36:26Yes, I'm making a judgment on who and he doesn't.
- 36:29And how do you jump in his face in his face?
- 36:34I just a second because of his performance, I'm like, is he
- 36:37going to shoot? Yes.
- 36:38And this is again, one of the questions from from our friend
- 36:41Jocasta Jose's would, this is the best question we got.
- 36:45This is amazing. Hang on a mo.
- 36:47This is James winstanley, isn't it is would the doctor of killed
- 36:51Had a me not being there to stop him.
- 36:53Does the doctor need companions to keep him from doing dark
- 36:56deed? See.
- 36:57Also Dalek Waters of Mars. Now, I think there is such a
- 37:01fucking hypocrite. See in the doctor in this after
- 37:05what he did and now don't get me wrong, Solomon was a loathsome?
- 37:08Yes. Oh was, that was Mark McManus,
- 37:11who asked about Solomon? Oh well, yes, this was yeah, so
- 37:16there are two kinds of related questions.
- 37:21James was asking about what do we think the doctor would have?
- 37:25Let him die at this point would have killed.
- 37:27I think he's capable. I think he would have I think
- 37:29he's judged it shocked. I was capable of murder.
- 37:34Yes. But they always made me stop him
- 37:39and come up with a better solution.
- 37:42Yes, again. And you know what, we're the
- 37:44enough inadvertently. She does it with humor?
- 37:46Yes. Yes.
- 37:47It's what stops him from making that Daryl's.
- 37:49Actually a very Doctor Who things in it.
- 37:51Yeah, that's very funny as well. And again, this is did.
- 37:55It was follow this word. She goes, I don't mean to do it.
- 37:57That's all. But this is absolutely what
- 38:01happens in The Day of the Doctor as well, isn't it?
- 38:05The companion comes up and says, you're better than this find a
- 38:09novel. I didn't think it was.
- 38:11You who did this Shame by Nara in it but, you know, it kind of
- 38:15ended but it is exactly the same thing of the companion coming up
- 38:19and saying, if actually what had that been Amy.
- 38:21And I are the doctor that would have if that had been a route
- 38:25that would have that would have been incredible.
- 38:28Well, I don't know that. Remember when she goes and she's
- 38:30like, I tell that little girl, but you're going to see a whale
- 38:34in outer space. Hold the whole ending in Angels.
- 38:37Take Manhattan is just beautiful.
- 38:41You know, with a new love this map.
- 38:46Joe. I'm reformed just like Jason
- 38:48Miller. There Steven Moffat era.
- 38:50Oh, there goes, Ben is still flawed.
- 38:54Oh no. Oh well, this brings me to
- 38:56another question. Okay, who would happen very
- 38:59often? Now, who are we trusting about
- 39:01Ben Browder being having clothes on.
- 39:03Oh, everyone. Lots of numbers.
- 39:11Are they bringing Ben Browder and keeping Fully Alive?
- 39:14Oh yeah. Oh no.
- 39:16Sorry, that was James H. B geek on Twitter says, why?
- 39:20Hire someone was hard to spend Browder and then keep you fully
- 39:23clothed all the time. And Steven Alexander says this
- 39:26times 1,000, yep. That I'm on these about 50s.
- 39:30Never really winkley. Sorry, I don't mean to be rude.
- 39:35Third Q. It is me every time but we did
- 39:40you see that? He had a nice slow pan out.
- 39:42Yeah. And then I lose.
- 39:45It's very nice as well. Yeah.
- 39:46Nice the coral B. Mm yeah.
- 39:51I'll I think yes I going on with the barmaid there, because
- 39:54Sheila, yeah, she looks very upset, didn't shake.
- 39:56You know what impressed me as well with this, if I fall for
- 39:59the couple of scenes that they had?
- 40:02The town's folk that get speaking parts are characterized
- 40:05with a little day. Yes, like you said, the
- 40:07Undertaker measuring the doctor here as soon as he bent and the
- 40:10kids. And there's a nice little
- 40:12relationship between the doctor and the kids.
- 40:14Yeah. Who's going to take over as the
- 40:15sheriff? Yes.
- 40:17What my point is is in series, 7, B, I don't know who any
- 40:21People are in Cold War, in belsen, John in any of those
- 40:25episodes but this just shows you how you can do a lock and
- 40:28schedule. Yeah, with very light big Toby,
- 40:31whithouse is very good at that. That's right.
- 40:34The LIE of the land that last all we might have done Watson.
- 40:39A yeah. Way to go out or not, you know,
- 40:44I think it was going for this sort of complexity because it
- 40:47has that scene. Where?
- 40:48Yeah, Bill Shuster dr. Buttman that Miss by a mile.
- 40:52Yes. But you think of the God,
- 40:54complex the year before, and how all of those characters are
- 40:57stashed in very quickly from Rita right over to David
- 41:02Williams. There's lots of Lights exploding
- 41:14or they just new to using electricity.
- 41:21Ten years too early. So it's one of those things that
- 41:24helps the doctors interest rate off.
- 41:26I am going to criticize this episode, okay.
- 41:29Thank because I think it Peaks at that scene in the Middle
- 41:33with. Yes this is a this is building
- 41:35up to what you, what you want, which is what we had in the
- 41:46gunfighters. Yes, I'll be a really vicious
- 41:49and unexpected blood. Bath at the end, I was saying
- 41:53the gunfighters is a historical. Yes, because it's a historical
- 41:58incident, but this isn't that. Yeah, this is and this manages
- 42:02to do a western and not tread the same path.
- 42:05Yeah. Which is which is good and
- 42:07healthy. Yeah, to be fair it was what
- 42:10years ago yeah. I've got that longer memory
- 42:12example to fans who probably watched it the week before
- 42:15because the going to the wild west, he's a genuine West has
- 42:20built as a well The town that used illegal movies and can be
- 42:24redressed. So I think it's a famous sort of
- 42:29Western city that is somewhere in the Wilds of Spain job with a
- 42:34site that I've never really found Mash me for attractive but
- 42:37he looks gorgeous in that sticks and Danny that is he's good with
- 42:41Hats. So - yeah, he can rocket any
- 42:46kind of hat from Affairs to to what he's wearing Crimson Aura
- 42:51that's all. Of black bowler hat.
- 42:52Yeah, and then he's got the big big, top hat.
- 43:02Goes to Utah at the start of the others were not in the new
- 43:07series. Jodi witchcraft that plume in
- 43:10States out. Yeah.
- 43:11Which is very good. But yeah.
- 43:21We're high and thin ice. He did yes.
- 43:23And I look good did, but it was red was good balls and yeah, and
- 43:28David Tennant. Not as far as I can tell, has
- 43:32the holiday hat. Did me the straw hat at the end
- 43:35of time. You don't sword?
- 43:37Yes, honestly, I hear he's coming back.
- 43:39You know really? Yeah.
- 43:41And my favorite companion ever. Not phrases, though wilf.
- 43:47Oh, you spoke just a gumbo you right now?
- 43:52There's some injustice in the world.
- 44:00Getting to that age now. Yeah, well yeah, all our icons
- 44:03are very old well and we're getting on a bit.
- 44:06Well yeah, tell me about it. No, I missed it because you were
- 44:23talking about my boss. I've never been there.
- 44:29He said, frightened people, I'd rather face a Dalek that's
- 44:32essentially, the premise of midnight.
- 44:34Yes. Because he's not Goods.
- 44:36Brought some people do things that you don't expect.
- 44:40And I'll tell you what, I don't think the mafia era delved into
- 44:44historical part time periods. Particularly, well, I think
- 44:46there's two examples, is this and there's been something the
- 44:50doctor When ya back into Cause otherwise I don't think they
- 44:54handled it very well. Certainly nowhere near as well
- 44:57as the width career know which has been, which kind of
- 45:03Hollywood eyes yesterday, which is an approach and that's fine,
- 45:08but this is fantastic. Yeah, it's the manipulation,
- 45:12isn't it? It's the Look how still Jax's.
- 45:18Yeah, and giving him the eye. And again it's two good actors
- 45:24facing off against each other. Like I'm going to upset people
- 45:29that love the Western genre now by the last thing I would have
- 45:32expected this to be would be a performance piece.
- 45:35No. And I don't ever, I'm sure
- 45:37there's a lot of complexity in those old westerns and I'm sure
- 45:39there's some phenomenal performances in there.
- 45:42But this is, this is this is just like as you said I'm gonna
- 45:46say DSi, rather than T and G, where they would be a Kira
- 45:50versus characters versus yeah, versus a cardassian with a big
- 45:56duet isn't you, are Waltz, things like that?
- 45:59Where they've got a big problem between them.
- 46:01There's a big cultural issue and there's a lot of discussion.
- 46:05Yes. And in this is as intense and as
- 46:08interesting as that yet, and it's one of the few Villains
- 46:14that has a way of getting under. The doctors skin is it doesn't
- 46:17happen all the time and there are again it's usually the
- 46:23scientist who's gone all the way.
- 46:26It's same status really, isn't it?
- 46:29That Devils has a way of getting under the doctor skin because
- 46:32there is a similarity between one, just enough of a similarity
- 46:37to make it comfortable for both of them.
- 46:41And he's less ghoulish. Yeah.
- 46:43Yeah, definitely. Yes.
- 46:44You could buy him to him being a nice bloke.
- 46:46Yes. But you must be off who's he
- 46:49remind you of links? Because he's an alien has fallen
- 46:53to Earth in the past and landed on his feet.
- 46:55Yes. He's flower with the local links
- 47:01had no compunction about saying I'm not gonna wipe you all out
- 47:04and I'm off. See ya.
- 47:08But yeah, it's and this is something.
- 47:10I think that the new series doesn't do very well and that is
- 47:16complex villains. They said have a good time.
- 47:19They do the transplant. Yes, it's like I love Miss
- 47:22Foster. I love even the one in hand
- 47:25time. Highest yeah, Keeley.
- 47:26Hawes has a heart attack. The fellow in footage from the
- 47:29dam. Yes, wheelchair is so funny but
- 47:33they don't do complex villains. Particularly no because they
- 47:36have got the time to explore it. Well, have violated here they
- 47:40do. Yes, because you can if you've
- 47:42got a certain kind of story, okay, well I've got a question
- 47:45for you then, okay, which, which style of Doctor Who episode.
- 47:49So you've got a sort of Alien Invasion.
- 47:53Stroke Nostalgia Fest. In school reunions.
- 47:56Yeah, you've got what I just an alien invasion, really in the
- 48:00vampire yanis. Here, you've got a western with
- 48:04some sort of moral complexity in the God complex, you've got a
- 48:07puzzle. Peace.
- 48:08Yeah, and it's only it's a psychological horror as well,
- 48:12isn't it? And then in the LIE of the land
- 48:15will fuck knows what else about what you think is his most
- 48:17successful episode and approach? Well, I it's hard not to love
- 48:24school reunions just because it's Sarah, Jane and canine
- 48:28coming back and it was the story that made me love Elizabeth
- 48:33sladen in a way I've never done before so, but is that Be
- 48:38careful. Yes.
- 48:40That is that? Because it's the Past coming
- 48:44back and who, whatever they done.
- 48:46Would it? The story itself isn't complex
- 48:50but it's hooking the return of a up to loved characters.
- 48:56So it doesn't need to be a complex story.
- 48:59I think it's emotionally company.
- 49:00It's a most. Yes, and the emotional beats are
- 49:03fantastic, but I think he is. Do you write - it's all right?
- 49:09It's very entertaining, funny as it thinks.
- 49:11No, I think his best is the court complex without a doubt.
- 49:15That's so weird, and complex and funny, and scary.
- 49:21And again, has a really brilliant moment of Matt Smith
- 49:25being angry. And yes, he is.
- 49:28Everyone, everyone sat in their different boobs, reacting to
- 49:33what's happened when Rita dies and the slope and cross them.
- 49:38It's just I do not disagree with a word, you are saying, but for
- 49:42some reason, I prefer this this little bleep, just more
- 49:47entertaining more entertaining and I think it's more visually.
- 49:51Yeah, nothing. I don't know.
- 49:52I think God complex is visually stunning vision for fucking
- 49:55weird. Yeah.
- 49:57Is that those chittering laughing?
- 49:59Yeah, exactly. And all those the imagery and
- 50:02the hotel that reconfigures itself and the corridors, I
- 50:05think you're really great. What was in the doctors room?
- 50:09I think we do in tongue of the glass.
- 50:15Now should have been my greatest fear with her legs open.
- 50:30Well, yes, I know it's just something about me.
- 50:36That brings it out. Did you say that?
- 50:38Popular shot. When that this Loadout a
- 50:40showdown of the clock exploding in slow motion.
- 50:43It's what you want. Isn't it start just yeah, I got
- 50:46it. What Dost my eyes deceive me a
- 50:49child in the mafia era. There's mayor this no mercy
- 50:54here. Doors blowing open my God.
- 50:58How cool does Matt Smith look at someone else?
- 51:02Why doesn't he wear that duster jacket more often?
- 51:06Because he looks really good in it.
- 51:08Incredible. Whoa.
- 51:10Man, he's commanding. He is, isn't he?
- 51:12You're going to fade always card?
- 51:14Well, I don't like pinky. Probably is, but you guys, I
- 51:21don't know what it is. He just just doesn't just push
- 51:25me all my buttons in ways. I didn't expect you really love
- 51:29your. I think Peter Capaldi is the
- 51:31best actor. Yeah, the doctor I but yeah, I
- 51:37have the same thing. Yes again I've said before I
- 51:42wanted him to be the doctor for such a long time and then he
- 51:45didn't play the doctor in any of the ways that I'd hoped and
- 51:51wished for. So, so way it goes, isn't it?
- 51:54Sometimes it is. So are we basically just running
- 51:57around trying to take down the? Yeah at the moment and is oh no
- 52:01Jax is going to have a moment of self-sacrifice yes but this is
- 52:04his Redemption. Yeah he makes things right.
- 52:07See now look in comparison to coach. - yeah, last night was a
- 52:12cool name Coast Marco Sharma space name from the Timeless
- 52:15children's. This sacrifice has a bit of
- 52:18weight to it. Yes, because we've had the
- 52:20argument between the doctor and and college expert before and I
- 52:26don't think it redeems what he has done.
- 52:30But it's an end for the character.
- 52:33It's over the counter, this quite satisfying.
- 52:35Yes. And it stops the doctor having
- 52:38to make the decision which, uh, in some ways is the plot
- 52:42chickening out. Yes.
- 52:44Because he could have done. So how does boom Talent?
- 52:47What does he make? The choice.
- 52:48Know, the Tardis doesn't, doesn't it?
- 52:50Oh yeah. It's a real.
- 52:53No, but all the way through he was going to say.
- 52:55Yes he was, he was absolutely adamant so he knew she was going
- 52:58to end up in that soup. Yes.
- 53:04And you do feel for Jack's here as well.
- 53:06Yes, he has a criminal. Blessed and even the doctor is
- 53:15talking him out of it. Yeah.
- 53:17Because he doesn't want anyone really to die.
- 53:21Okay, I know, I know it's just said, just go finish it.
- 53:23All we doing is he saying, leave?
- 53:25Yeah, if I have to tear this universe apart to find you, I
- 53:31mean, it's a good design, I'm not sure the the cyborgs got
- 53:35particularly good characterization.
- 53:36No, but it does what it needs to be done.
- 53:38And again, it doesn't mean complex characterization because
- 53:43it's just a tool that was used to end the wall and it should
- 53:47be. It should have his Humanity
- 53:48taken away because that's the crime that colleges Is has done.
- 53:52I mean, I'm gay. I'm going to say something now,
- 53:54which is not a criticism of the episode, but the most
- 53:58interesting things about this episode are not the Western
- 54:01elements so that's why is fictional.
- 54:04Yes, it is just it's, it's dressings.
- 54:07Winter is window. Yeah, its a setting for liquor
- 54:10store. What a great that is worthy of a
- 54:14Pertwee explosion. That's a great Explorer.
- 54:16McCoy explosion, which I think is the best explosion ever.
- 54:20Oh. So those doors exploding around
- 54:24when that gate explode. Yeah.
- 54:27And I really like the warehouse going up in mind of evil with
- 54:36the down. You see all the bits fluttering
- 54:38in the air. Yeah, that's really run.
- 54:40Her. Good thing.
- 54:40You know, when we're discussing the best explain what's been the
- 54:44best explosion in your bed. Mary box.
- 54:52Just give us your top ten. How?
- 54:57Yeah. That's right.
- 55:04And he's going to stay. I will look out for the village
- 55:11for the rest of his life. No.
- 55:15He was gonna go though. Yes, he was.
- 55:17All he does have a role and actually Amy and Rory had no
- 55:21part in the climax that they do. Those, that is good today,
- 55:24sorry. Yes, they, yeah, yeah.
- 55:27I think they are utilized very well in sewers 7A but they're
- 55:33they're running story like that leaving the doctor though but
- 55:35it's Does it? Yeah.
- 55:41And this is sort of dealing with that, isn't it?
- 55:43Because it pissed me off at the time, but actually the show was
- 55:46like, on the way home. We're traveling, we're having,
- 55:49we're traveling but actually go back.
- 55:51I think it was handled as a allowing the kids to let go of a
- 55:55Monroy that they fall in love with.
- 55:56Yeah, it's when Clara came along.
- 55:59I was like, okay. Now she should be on board
- 56:00full-time. Yeah and he was going.
- 56:02I like the time I was like if you had a child struggling with
- 56:06odds you'd be there all the time.
- 56:08I mean fuck real life. Want to fuck Danny pink probably
- 56:14off. In the time, this is more
- 56:18interesting as a sideman then it was human appearance was was in
- 56:23last Christmas. Was that little girl grows up to
- 56:33do the duration for the episodes.
- 56:35I'd love it. A bit of shrapnel, from the
- 56:37spaceship just came in here and head town.
- 56:59Sorry, I'm really nice ending and I just think in terms of
- 57:02Television, it's ticking every box, right?
- 57:04It's beautiful website to look at it.
- 57:07Sounds beautiful for the music's great.
- 57:11You've got great dialogue for great characterization.
- 57:14Yeah. Some interesting twists and
- 57:16turns, like I just, I can't really thought it was people
- 57:20really don't like it. No, it does everything.
- 57:23Well, yeah, confidently as well. Yes, that's serious every night.
- 57:27I think there's a confidence in Syria 78.
- 57:28Look, paraphrase. Do coming up now.
- 57:31Oh my God. It's cold.
- 57:35She's very forward. But I love the Q.
- 57:36Yes, which is a really great idea.
- 57:38How do you place? Oh my God.
- 58:01Yes. So I got a question from from
- 58:05Jack Koya here. I just want to say you did a
- 58:08great commentary for Edge Of Destruction on, really enjoy.
- 58:11That one, there's a country coming up from check Hoya on the
- 58:15unquiet, dead. Oh, that would be Goods.
- 58:18He make some observations in that that made my other.
- 58:20See my toes curl. Make your hair curl, made my
- 58:24pattern. Oh oh.
- 58:25There there were very impressed. Yes.
- 58:28So, what other Todd is teams. Would you like to have seen do a
- 58:32western this Western not necessarily.
- 58:36This wasn't just a western. Oh my God, the full of dr.
- 58:39Sarah and Herod Magi. Sarah as if Buxom babe and Harry
- 58:46is this is the rori character. Sort of bumbling.
- 58:49I'll be. I could see that.
- 58:50Yeah, I can't see Peter Davison in a western but I can see Colin
- 58:57Alf shalynn and yeah. And and Bonnie, oh my God, what
- 59:01about McCoy and bother it, haha. Would be amazing.
- 59:12Okay, so you already know what? I think we're going to deal with
- 59:17Gary Russell's question of why is this story so good?
- 59:20When we do our summing up, it's fabulous.
- 59:22Get is Gary, yep. Even though you don't like that,
- 59:26you're deaf if. So, I was a cyborg, which side
- 59:29by side, says, Paul Phillips Williams ifs, I was a cyborg
- 59:34would sigh sigh? Yes.
- 59:38Yeah. The only real answer to that,
- 59:42isn't it? Okay, this is the doctor s.
- 59:45Visit to the old west. Yeah, which is better.
- 59:47This or the gun fires? Oh, oh, that's my favorite lines
- 59:59from the gun fires. Really good.
- 1:00:02Touch alcohol. But a little glass of milk.
- 1:00:05Can I be doing? Do we stay with it?
- 1:00:12It's a bit where he's got the card on the continent.
- 1:00:15Goes to her. How do we proceed calling?
- 1:00:20Mr. Were all the way through. Would you like a slug of old
- 1:00:24knuckle rustler? No, I certainly don't got, don't
- 1:00:27touch alcohol. I must say it's very
- 1:00:29unprofessional or is it? I don't think that's a very
- 1:00:32subtle form of advertising, do you?
- 1:00:34I mean, it's fucking hilarious, which is better.
- 1:00:39I think they're really different.
- 1:00:40But yeah. It's you can't really compare
- 1:00:42them. Like 11.
- 1:00:44Evil enough to be at Studio bound Western.
- 1:00:47Yes. In the 60s and an out-and-out
- 1:00:50comedy. Yeah.
- 1:00:51With a song, I think the gun fires is bolder.
- 1:00:55Yes. It's more dangerous.
- 1:00:57Maybe I think tackled Mercy is a better piece of Television.
- 1:01:02Yes, it's more competent. Although actually the gunfight
- 1:01:06is quite stylish Li directed and she doesn't know that accents.
- 1:01:09Allah burials. I think we've got better accents
- 1:01:13here. We got them.
- 1:01:14Well, who is actually a miracle? Yeah.
- 1:01:16But everybody hotties in the gun part of this to you.
- 1:01:19Oh well, maybe a Purvis. Yeah, well, maybe Lauren's pain,
- 1:01:22actually, when he comes in as Johnny Ringo, Jackie Lane in the
- 1:01:25right line. Well, it has a fabulous
- 1:01:28Cliffhanger where they're playing on the piano and
- 1:01:29singing. Yes.
- 1:01:31Next episode don't shoot The Pianist.
- 1:01:36Yeah, yeah it is and I don't think we've answered that.
- 1:01:40No. So We love them both.
- 1:01:43Okay, so I well I think we might have covered everything there.
- 1:01:48That's have a, just a quick look.
- 1:01:49Now, how could you keep people entertained while I'm looking?
- 1:01:55Yes, I probably could. We have we've covered them all.
- 1:02:03Which thank you very much, everyone.
- 1:02:05Yes, a question in. So I've never done that before.
- 1:02:07I know that's very much a freezer being usually.
- 1:02:10So but it is, but it worked. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:12And honestly know until, you know, falak question is okay,
- 1:02:16site. So now we need to find three
- 1:02:18things apiece. Yeah, about a mercy to recommend
- 1:02:22people. So why don't you go first?
- 1:02:24Okay, I am going to say Adrian Dunbar as College X.
- 1:02:28You don't mean Adrian. Scarborough RT, I do mean age.
- 1:02:31It's called Adrienne Dunbar is the guy from.
- 1:02:34The other thing is enough, uh, he's not in doctor who he is.
- 1:02:39I don't you choke with no more. I'll tell ya what's gone wrong.
- 1:02:46So my first one is I'm Adrian. Scarborough, yes, I'm College X,
- 1:02:51who is Gives one of The best judge performances of the era.
- 1:02:57It's very unsung doesn't get shouted about as much as he
- 1:03:01should is really, really good. Playing a complex character and
- 1:03:05making it seem fairly effortless.
- 1:03:07It's good stuff. You need to hold on to your
- 1:03:11heart. Okay, I'm about to say, right,
- 1:03:15the first thing I would like to recommend about this episode is
- 1:03:19Matt Smith. Extraordinary performers as the
- 1:03:26doctor so much, so I'm not even gonna follow that up with.
- 1:03:30He doesn't usually, he is fantastically good in this, he
- 1:03:34is particularly good in that scene where he has to be angry.
- 1:03:39Yes, that just amazingly good. Like, like, if people needed to
- 1:03:44point at something and say, no, Joe you're wrong.
- 1:03:46This is the doctor they could make me watch this and I would
- 1:03:50just not my head all the way through.
- 1:03:51Yeah, absolutely. He's Ever so good as an
- 1:03:54appraiser. Tried with the eleventh hour.
- 1:03:56He did bathing. Didn't succeed.
- 1:03:58Hey, there we go. No, you're absolutely right.
- 1:04:00Mats at the top of his game. They're just really confident
- 1:04:05and really well judged performance.
- 1:04:09So my next one would be the location which is just
- 1:04:15beautifully, filmed really well, used looks absolutely the part
- 1:04:19because it is designed to be absolutely the part.
- 1:04:22So, yeah. And the director saw met Stone
- 1:04:26gets the very best out of his location.
- 1:04:29Both outside the village and inside the village.
- 1:04:34My second thing is I can't believe I'm doing this Karen
- 1:04:38Gillan. Amy poems.
- 1:04:40Naughty. Hell, I think it's
- 1:04:42extraordinarily good. In series 7.
- 1:04:44A and in this case she doesn't have loads to do.
- 1:04:50I think she gets more to in all the other episodes, actually,
- 1:04:53but what she gets to do the comedy mode with the gun
- 1:04:56standing up for her opinion with Rory, reminding the doctor of
- 1:05:00his Humanity like she's just on fire in this season and if I'm
- 1:05:06not looking at Matt Smith, I'm looking at Karen Gillan.
- 1:05:10So that is the second thing first for everything.
- 1:05:15Okay? Wow, okay, well, I'm going to
- 1:05:19say, Bed Brando just cuz it's Ben Browder.
- 1:05:24And actually I think the whole cost of everyone in the village
- 1:05:28as you said are really well thought through, they are nicely
- 1:05:35cast, good characters, no one steps out of the reality
- 1:05:42everyone is is just right for what they're doing and they all
- 1:05:45give really good thing. So Derek Hagen is another
- 1:05:47example of taking a small part and doing Something that
- 1:05:51unexpected and and good right down to the barmaid and very
- 1:05:55funny when I'm very funny. Yes.
- 1:05:57It's very, very funny. Okay.
- 1:06:00Well, my third recommendation for this is Steven Moffat.
- 1:06:05Oh, Lottie hell. They could have warned me
- 1:06:10because I think it was a very Savvy move doing movie of the
- 1:06:16week for the first half of this season.
- 1:06:19Yes. So having lightest Or he's with
- 1:06:23the character thread of the baby, and Rory leaving the
- 1:06:27doctor. And I like the Simplicity of
- 1:06:31these stories. They've all got a simple premise
- 1:06:33dinosaurs on a spaceship, the Western, with the Android, the
- 1:06:37cube Invasion. They're all quite simple
- 1:06:39stories. Yes.
- 1:06:40All I don't like the Mad complexity of.
- 1:06:43Steven Moffat Sarah, and I think this pushes against it, he's
- 1:06:47wearing something very different from season 6.
- 1:06:50And it works a treat and A town called Mercy is the one episode
- 1:06:53I think absolutely Aces it all the way through his 45 minutes
- 1:06:57so it was just a Savvy. Move on.
- 1:06:59Steven Moffat part to make this change in the formula and this
- 1:07:04episode is one of the riches within it.
- 1:07:06Yes. Wow there we go.
- 1:07:10Hello whatever for watching. I'm Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and
- 1:07:13speaking of changed, Where we heading next told, God, mom's
- 1:07:25download complete. If we were raised that way a
- 1:07:28team, I think some where we are and if we're alone, still got to
- 1:07:33do snake dance, haven't we? Or should we do that?
- 1:07:36Well yeah we should do that next need to do the web Planet.
- 1:07:39Always say is that as well. Yeah and we obviously haven't
- 1:07:42heard that yet not happen. No they don't even know about
- 1:07:44that one plated with the to sighs.
- 1:07:46Yes. My my own multi Avenger yeah.
- 1:07:50With two sides. Why?
- 1:07:51Yes, well okay say thank you very much for coming down today.
- 1:07:55My pleasure John very much for doing this commentary and I do
- 1:07:58hope anybody that doesn't like, tackle, Mercy.
- 1:08:03Now is Will some opposing opinions and they can exert and
- 1:08:07give it another chance. Please do?
- 1:08:09I think you'd enjoy that so write them up Cowboy.
- 1:08:13What was that?
