- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Life is a lot like the process of having an eye exam.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: You sit in a dark room and the eye doctor puts a lot of different lenses in front of your eyes.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And what you see on the wall chart in front of you depends on the kind of lens that you're looking through.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: This is especially true for creatives of all types, including writers.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: What you see out there in the world, and even more so within yourself, depends on the lens that you're looking through.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Another word for this lens is the word perspective.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: And over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to be sharing a few perspectives on writing, career, and your creative life.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And you might call these contrarian perspectives because they go against the conventional wisdom that we've all heard.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: I hope that these are going to help you stay healthy and productive in your writing life.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: So let's dive into today's perspective.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I believe that one of the downsides of social media is that everybody can see what we do.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Oftentimes there's immediate judgment when somebody goofs up or they make a mistake.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Therefore, we're all hyper-aware of doing something to make ourselves look foolish.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: We avoid risk and we place a premium on our appearance.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: We've got to move past this impulse and instead keep a beginner's mindset.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Life and technology is changing so fast that there's no way to keep up with it.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And if you're going to stay relevant, you have to be willing to experiment, to learn, to make mistakes, and to grow.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: I'm facing this right now with doing short form video for social media.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I'm honestly not very good at it, but I'm learning and I'm willing to practice in public and go for it with a beginner's mindset.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: So how about you?
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: What are you learning?
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Is it book marketing, social media, video, working on that first book, getting started with public speaking or maybe podcasting?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Whatever it is, just dive in and don't worry about what everybody else thinks.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: You'll catch on quickly enough.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And in this ever-changing media and technological landscape, we're honestly all beginners all the time.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: But the prize will belong to those of us who are willing to adapt and change with the times.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question: what are you learning right now?
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: And do you have a beginner's mindset in your writing and creative work?
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you tomorrow.
