- 0:07The San Francisco Giants faced the Chicago Cubs at Scottsdale Stadium in Arizona for a spring training game on March 8, 1972.
- 0:15San Francisco was managed by Charlie Fox and were coming off a strong season in 1971, despite losing to the Pirates in the NLCS.
- 0:23Chicago was managed by Leo De Rocher in his seventh and what would turn out to be his final season with the Cubs.
- 0:28This audio recording is from the San Francisco Radio broadcast featuring announcers Lon Simmons and Bill Thompson.
- 0:34Well, that is the bat, Willie May, from the leadoff position. May from the leadoff play center field.
- 0:39Keto Quintes batting number two, playing second base. Another experiment, Dave Kingman batting number three and playing third base.
- 0:47Willie McCovey at first base, batting number four. Bobby Bonds hitting fifth, playing in right field.
- 0:54Kenny Henderson in left field, batting number six. Fran Healy doing the catching and batting seventh.
- 1:01Chris Spire, who is conducting an experiment of his own this year. He's trying switch hitting.
- 1:07He is batting eighth. And Don Carrithers, who won five and lost three for the Giants last year, both as a starter and reliever.
- 1:15He will be on the mound for the Giants.
- 1:19The Cubs, Rick Mundy acquired and traded from the Oakland A's and traded from the center left-hander Ken Holzman to open.
- 1:25He will be in center field and might be the answer to the Chicago Cubs' difficulties in the past in center field.
- 1:32Glenn Beckert will be at second base, batting number two. Billy Williams in left field, hitting number three.
- 1:39Ron Sando or Joe Capitone at first base, hitting fourth. Ron Sando batting number five and playing third base.
- 1:46Jose Carden now in right field, hitting sixth. Don Kessinger, the shortstop, batting seventh.
- 1:51Ken Rudolph is the catcher hitting eighth. And Ferguson Jenkins prepares for the first pitch.
- 1:56The right-hander delivers to Willie Mays, who takes high and inside for a ball, 1-0.
- 2:00The Cy Young winner, Ferguson Jenkins, five consecutive seasons, the 20-game winner, 24 wins last year.
- 2:08Mays takes low and away for a ball two. Jenkins with a good fastball and excellent slider.
- 2:14This is the 25th spring opener for the Giants in Arizona.
- 2:20As Mays bats against Ferguson Jenkins, the outfield is around to the left. The infield backed up against Willie.
- 2:26Willie bluffs a bunch, takes inside for ball three.
- 2:29Willie will be doing some things up there as the leadoff man that he doesn't do in the number three position, of course.
- 2:37Willie will be trying to get his way on ahead of the Kingman's McCuffys to follow. Strike call, three and one.
- 2:47Art Williams, the home plate umpire, Paul Runge at first, and Hal Vann at third.
- 2:53Williams, who umpired here in spring training last year, a minor league umpire, who will probably be in the middle.
- 2:59Mays deserves a drive to deep left field. That one going back all the way to the fence and waiting for it in left field.
- 3:05He's got the ball. Billy Williams dropped the ball. That was 370 feet from the plate.
- 3:12Williams backed up against the wall and in this high sky of Arizona and looking into the sun,
- 3:18Williams dropped the ball right by the barrier and Mays winds up at second base.
- 3:23The next batter, number 23, People Products and Service.
- 3:28Three of the many reasons you'll want to stop at Standard Stations and Chevron Dealers along the Chevron way.
- 3:35This broadcast authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the San Francisco Giants solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 3:40Any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the description and accounts of this game without the express written consent of the San Francisco Giants is prohibited.
- 3:47Mays at second base, Tito Point is up here batting left handed. He takes his strike.
- 3:52The defense double play combination now will be, both will be switch hitting at least for a time as Chris Fier is trying it and Tito has for the past few years.
- 4:02And Tito batting left handed against the right hander Jenkins.
- 4:05Fitch to Tito. Broken bat, blooper down the right field line. If that stays fair, it's trouble. It's a fair ball.
- 4:10Mays will come in to score. 26 for second base. He has a broken bat double and the Giants lead it by a score of 1 to nothing.
- 4:17As the first two hitters for the Giants score the first run of the season.
- 4:22And air charged to Williams on that drop fly ball. This is a double for 20.
- 4:28Mays hit the ball hard to left field. A high drive that appeared for a moment as though it had a chance of getting out of here.
- 4:34Williams backed up to the fence and then dropped the ball.
- 4:37Then Tito hit one off the end of the bat, broke the bat, and blooped it in down the right field line for a double.
- 4:44He's at second and Dave Kingman, right hand batter up here, swings and misses strike one.
- 4:48Kingman is going to wear out left handers. He's going to have to learn a bit about hitting the right handers.
- 4:52But he batted 278 in his brief stint with the Giants last year, 41 games.
- 4:58He had six home runs, 10 doubles, and two triples.
- 5:03A big problem this year for the young fella is whether he can concentrate on two things.
- 5:08A curve is low for a ball one on one, that is trying to hit major league pitching and trying to play third base, a new position for him.
- 5:15He is an excellent athlete. A surprising quickness for fellow 6'6".
- 5:21And he needs the quickness at third base.
- 5:23Of course, this is not to say that Dave Kingman is going to play third base because there's a fella by the name of Alan Gallagher that played it last year that figures the job was his.
- 5:32Pitch to Kingman a curve low for a ball.
- 5:35The obvious reason that they want Kingman in at third base is for his power hitting.
- 5:40Bobby Bonds discussing the number three spot in the batting order said, well, he's not too sure about maize batting.
- 5:46First maize has the experience to bat third. He says, after you've made outs, pitch to Kingman is low for a ball.
- 5:53He says, batting in the number three spot and after you've made outs that ended innings about five or six consecutive times,
- 5:59you'll notice when you look down the bench that Willie McCovey is sort of looking at you.
- 6:07Kingman waiting as Jenkins looks back at second base.
- 6:12The pitch to the big guy, he checks his swing and takes outside for ball four.
- 6:15Close pitch, but Kingman held up on the delivery.
- 6:18He goes to first base. One is at second and Willie McCovey coming back from neacer three in the offseason.
- 6:26Willie last year was plagued by bad knee all season long without a good cheer of the year.
- 6:32Two seventy-seven batting average, eighteen home runs, seventy RBI.
- 6:36A good season for most people, not a good one for McCovey.
- 6:40Willie has hit three home runs in inter-squad games so far this spring.
- 6:47And he's up here to bat left-handed against Jenkins as the outfield is well around to the right and backed up.
- 6:51The pitch has hit high and foul to the right over near the stands going over as Pepitone long run.
- 6:56It will be back into the seats as Pepitone and Becherts, the second baseman, go over to the low railing.
- 7:01At capacity, how's it turn away?
- 7:03Out there is a standing room crowd out behind the chain-link fence in the right field corner in foul territory.
- 7:13But it is jammed here in Scottsdale for this one.
- 7:16They had to turn people away.
- 7:18Everyone counts on McCovey, nobody down, a run in.
- 7:21Mays safe on Billy Williams there.
- 7:23Fwonty's doubled him home.
- 7:24And Kingman walked.
- 7:25Kingman at first.
- 7:26Fwonty's at second.
- 7:27Kessinger breaks in behind.
- 7:28Tito at second base.
- 7:29The pitch outside for a ball.
- 7:31Jenkins having his control problems.
- 7:33Jenkins, a fellow that in the regular season, you have to get two in the first couple of innings.
- 7:39If he gets by the first two, and this is true of a lot of the good pitchers that have a little trouble settling down the first couple of innings,
- 7:47if they get by that and you give them a run or something, give them a lead.
- 7:51They're tough.
- 7:53Jenkins pitched to McCovey, a breaking pitch high for a ball.
- 7:57Two and one.
- 8:05One to nothing, the Giants in front.
- 8:07Spring training opened for the Giants last year.
- 8:1115 and 11 record in spring training games.
- 8:13The Cubs were their leading team in the Cactus League play.
- 8:18Giants went on to win the Western Division Championship.
- 8:20Swing and a looper out into short left.
- 8:22That one's going to drop in in front of Williams.
- 8:24Fwonty's is heading for the play.
- 8:25Williams has the ball bounced off his glove.
- 8:27Kingman goes to third.
- 8:28McCovey's at first with a bloop single.
- 8:30And Fwonty's comes in with a second run.
- 8:34So they're wearing Jenkins out.
- 8:36A dropped fly ball and two pop flies off the end of the bat that dropped in.
- 8:41McCovey has an RBI single.
- 8:44The Giants in front, two to nothing.
- 8:47The old saying about better to be lucky than good.
- 8:52Well, McCovey is definitely good.
- 8:55In that time he was very lucky.
- 8:57So he had both things going for him.
- 8:59Now Bobby Barnes in the number five spot.
- 9:01Barnes, the Giants' leading hitter last year, an RBI, home runs, takes low for a ball.
- 9:07One and oh.
- 9:08And third is Kingman at first is McCovey.
- 9:11Gioia Malfatano, a new member of the Giants.
- 9:13He was formerly on the first base coaching line for the Cubs.
- 9:17He is coaching at first base for San Francisco and Johnny McNamara over at third.
- 9:23Outfield to the left for Barnes, backed up, double play position in the infield.
- 9:28Curve is outside for a ball.
- 9:40Two and oh count on Barnes.
- 9:42McCovey was a short lead at first and Kingman moves away from third base.
- 9:46Jenkins from the stretch, the pitch, top foul out of play.
- 9:51Two and one.
- 9:55Barnes batted 288 last year.
- 9:58Barnes, as most of the Giants last year, suffered through injury torment for a while.
- 10:05He was sidelined for a short period of time.
- 10:08It seemed like everybody was sick, lame, and halted one time or another during that 71 season.
- 10:14Blowing away for a ball three.
- 10:17Jenkins having difficulty finding the play.
- 10:22And he's behind three and one to Barnes.
- 10:24He hasn't been retired yet, although it may have been on the fly ball to Williams that Williams dropped for an error.
- 10:30Three-one pitch.
- 10:31Ponds grounded to shortstop, could be two.
- 10:33Over to second for one.
- 10:34Becker's throw to first.
- 10:35In time, double play.
- 10:37Ponds bounding into a double play from Kessinger to Becker to Pepitone.
- 10:43So the Cubs who were having trouble getting one get two on that play.
- 10:46And Kenny Henderson will be the batter.
- 10:53Dave Kingman came in to score on that double play.
- 10:56So the Giants now have themselves a three to nothing margin as Kingman crosses the plate and the Cubs were converting the two out.
- 11:06Kenny Henderson fouls the first pitch back batting left-handed.
- 11:09Kenny is switch batter.
- 11:11Strike one count.
- 11:12Henderson.
- 11:15Also, Ken started out brilliantly last year and then he was hurt.
- 11:20Pond up hitting 264 with 15 home runs, 65 RBIs.
- 11:25Takes outside for a ball.
- 11:29Count of a ball and a strike.
- 11:35One-and-one count to Henderson.
- 11:37Base is empty.
- 11:38Three runs in.
- 11:39Pitch outside for a ball.
- 11:40Jenkins missing with that one and it's two and one.
- 11:42Fran Healy on deck.
- 11:46Scheduled to be Jenkins, Pappas, and Regan for the Cubs.
- 11:52Carruthers, Dequisto.
- 11:56Strike called and John Cumberland for the Giants.
- 11:59Two-and-one count to Henderson.
- 12:02Giants in front, three to nothing.
- 12:05May is safe on an error.
- 12:07Pwanty's doubled him home.
- 12:08Kingman walks.
- 12:09McCovey singles.
- 12:10Ground ball to Sharpley hits the first.
- 12:11Pepitone knocks it down and rolls away from it and picks it up.
- 12:13Throws the first to Jenkins covering inside.
- 12:16Good play by Pepitone on a shot hit by Henderson.
- 12:21And here in the first inning for the Giants, three runs on two hits, one error, and no one left on.
- 12:28We go to the bottom of the first.
- 12:29The Giants lead three to nothing.
- 12:31You know.
- 12:34Don Carruthers, young right-hander for the Giants.
- 12:37Don, well, there are a lot of jobs open on the pitching staff.
- 12:42And Don is working for one of those.
- 12:44Don said before the game, Sam McDowell is known as a character before he got to the Giants.
- 12:51And he's not going to do anything related to ruin that image.
- 12:55He said to Carruthers, Carruthers was sitting in the dressing room for the game in the clubhouse.
- 13:00And he said to manager Charlie Fox, he said, who's pitching today?
- 13:05And Fox says Carruthers is starting.
- 13:07And McDowell says that's how we're trying to win.
- 13:16Rick Mundy will lead off, left-hand batter.
- 13:18The fellow trying to answer the center field problems of the Chicago Cubs takes a fastball outside for a ball one-on-o.
- 13:23The Giants defensively, Henderson in left, Mays in center, Barnes in right.
- 13:27Kingman at third, Spire at short, 20s at second, McCovey at first, Dan Healy the catcher.
- 13:33Carruthers deals off to Mundy.
- 13:35Top foul out of play and it's a ball and a strike.
- 13:39Carruthers has to keep the ball down.
- 13:45That's a fine shutout against Houston.
- 13:47Any shutout to pitch is a fine one, I guess.
- 13:53Kingman, besides having to learn how to pick up the ball and throw it, is going to have to learn about positioning himself at third.
- 13:59There's a drive deep to left field down the line, twisting away from Henderson.
- 14:03It lands a one-hop, picked off by Henderson, and Mundy has himself an off-field double.
- 14:08Mundy hits that ball hard to the opposite field.
- 14:10Henderson chased it down and got it back to the infield, but Mundy had himself a double.
- 14:19Each team starts off with a runner at second base on a drive to left field.
- 14:24Rick Mundy, in first appearance in a game as the Chicago Cubs, doubles the left field.
- 14:30Glenn Beckert will be the batter, right-hand batting second base and one of the toughest men in baseball to strike out.
- 14:36It's last year, 3-42.
- 14:43Look at second by Carruthers, the pitch to Beckert, a breaking pitch for a strike, 0-1.
- 14:49Think about Mr. Valuble, Glenn Beckert certainly has come along to be one of the top Chicago Cubs in the field and at the plate.
- 15:02Spire bluffing behind Mundy at second, the pitch to Beckert popped up into short left.
- 15:06This may be one of those little loopers that dropped in.
- 15:08Henderson comes on, he makes the catch.
- 15:10Kenny Henderson, a one-handed catch.
- 15:13This is something, the way they're hitting him off the fifth and off the end of the bat.
- 15:17That one popped into short left, but Henderson with his good speed was able to get there to make the one-handed catch.
- 15:24Name the car you consider the most dependable.
- 15:26Chevy Nova, right?
- 15:28Novas earned the admiration of just about everybody with a reputation like that.
- 15:31You'd expect the 72 Nova to be the best car you ever owned.
- 15:36Billy Williams.
- 15:38The guy always looks like he has to hit 600 and hit 60 home runs every year, left-hand batter with a smooth swing and baseball.
- 15:47At second base is Mundy, he remains there as Henderson caught Beckert's bid for a base hit, a strike call in the knees and the outside.
- 15:57Where in the bottom of the first, the Giants lead 3-0, the Cubs have a runner.
- 16:01At second base, Rick Mundy, Billy Williams, who hit 3-0-1 last year, drove in 93 runs with 28 home runs.
- 16:09He's up here, one strike pitch, popped up down the left field line, a long run for Henderson.
- 16:13He is drifting near the line, he's there and makes the catch for the second out.
- 16:18Williams flies the left and it's obvious from the swings here by the two left-hand hitters that Carruthers is putting quite a bit on the pitch, is getting it by those left-handers.
- 16:28Williams flying out to the off field, Mundy doubling to the off field and now another left-hand batter, Joe Pepitone is up here.
- 16:39Joe spent the off season as the lead role in the hair.
- 16:51Pepitone waiting, Mundy at second base.
- 16:54Mundy looks back, the pitch to Pepitone, grounded to second base, Mundy scoops it up, throws the first at the scoreless inning for Carruthers.
- 17:01Despite the leadoff double, hair in the first, no runs on the hit, no errors and a runner left on.
- 17:07At the end of one, the Giants 3 and the Cubs nothing.
- 17:12I'd like to talk to you guys about your wives, about something they might be missing.
- 17:16No, don't worry, I'm not about to play marriage counselor.
- 17:19I just want to remind you that your wife may not have a Bank of America card of her own.
- 17:23You know how useful your Bank of America card is to you.
- 17:26Well, if your Bank of America card is useful to you, it can be just as useful, maybe even more so, to a woman.
- 17:31Say for instance she gets into an emergency situation with a car when you're not around.
- 17:35A Bank of America card could really come in handy.
- 17:38Or what about the end of the month when you want to know where all the money went?
- 17:41If she had used a Bank of America card, she'd have a written record of all her purchases.
- 17:46And think about how you can cut down on the time it takes to write all those separate checks.
- 17:51Add it all up and see if you don't agree that your wife should have a Bank of America card too.
- 17:57Bank of America card, think of it as money, his and hers money.
- 18:04A little touchy humor there.
- 18:10We go to the second inning.
- 18:14And as long as this is spring trading, let Bill Thompson get the kinks out of his Thompson.
- 18:21Catcher Fran Healy hitting seventh in the Giants or deleted off in shortstop crisp fire
- 18:26and pitcher Don Gridders against Ferguson Jenkins here in the top of inning number two.
- 18:29How come you haven't asked me about my vacation yet?
- 18:31We'll hear about that all through the season, I'm sure.
- 18:37Right-hander Jenkins kicks and throws to the right-hander batting Healy who bounds it to third base foul.
- 18:41He goes by Sano outside the line.
- 18:49Healy last year got off to a great start for the Giants, particularly in a pinch hitting role.
- 18:54He had a big pinch hit all matter in the season to beat Houston.
- 18:57Finished with a very respectable year batting 280, appearing in 47 games.
- 19:04Fran 6-5, native of Massachusetts. Jenkins to the plate, breaking pitch low.
- 19:14If Kingman plays third base, McCovey at first base and Healy behind the plate, you get some height.
- 19:21Dodgers up, be careful about starting a fight this year.
- 19:241-1 pitch to Healy, low, ball two.
- 19:32McCovey in field, the bits to the left are straight away.
- 19:34The outfield the same way, Monday just slightly in the left center.
- 19:38Williams deep in left, she keeps checking the sun.
- 19:42It is going to be tough on all the outfielders.
- 19:44Low again is Jenkins, ball three.
- 19:47Jenkins drops behind on Healy, three balls and one strike.
- 19:59Jenkins to the plate, 3-1.
- 20:02Outside and low, breaking pitch, ball four.
- 20:04Healy draws the watch, number two given up by Jenkins.
- 20:07And Chris Spire, the Giants shortstop, will move in.
- 20:10Chris, experimenting as a switch hitter, as Lon mentioned, will be making his first appearance against
- 20:17any other than his own teammates as a left-handed batter.
- 20:21Healy at first, nobody out. Top of the second, Giants lead three to nothing.
- 20:26Jenkins from the stretch, misses low, ball one.
- 20:29Sano crowds him on the grass at third.
- 20:32Becker, Kessinger, short and up.
- 20:34The outfield, shallow, with Mundy playing Spire as a late swinger to left center.
- 20:40Jenkins gets the fastball over in the outside corner, 1-1 count.
- 20:44Williams, shallow, near the line and left.
- 20:48Cardinal, well off the line and right field.
- 20:52Capiton, playing a step behind Healy at first base as Jenkins looks there, comes to the plate.
- 20:56Gets the outside corner called strike two.
- 21:06Jenkins checking signs with catcher Ken Rudolph.
- 21:10Healy away from first.
- 21:11Breaking pitch, a half swing, and he checked in time.
- 21:15Played up by Art Williams, saying Spire did not go through,
- 21:20and King asked to check for the first base umpire Paul Runge.
- 21:25The decision will stand.
- 21:27Count on Spire, goes to two balls and two strikes.
- 21:31Healy again moving away from first.
- 21:32Capiton playing off the bag now.
- 21:35Sort of first.
- 21:36Capiton had to cross behind Healy to make the catch.
- 21:39Jenkins throw over there.
- 21:46Goes to the plate, 2-2, outside, a full count, three balls, two strikes.
- 21:50Yon deck circle for the Giants, Richard Dime, Carruthers.
- 22:05Jenkins looking to Rudolph for a sign, as one he likes.
- 22:09Quick throw to first, Healy back in.
- 22:11So the full count, three and two.
- 22:13Capiton now playing on the bag, holding Healy there.
- 22:19Jenkins sets, 3-2 pitch.
- 22:21Outside ball for those fire walks.
- 22:25That pushes Healy up to second.
- 22:27Third walk of Jenkins, in the second in a row.
- 22:31The Giants batter will be Richard Dime, Carruthers.
- 22:33Dime bats as he pitches, right-handed.
- 22:35Carruthers checking with third base coach John McNamara.
- 22:39The Cubs of course look for the bunt with the pitcher at the plate.
- 22:41The runners at first and second and nobody out.
- 22:43Sanna will try to anchor at third.
- 22:45Kessinger will try to hold Healy close to second base.
- 22:47Capiton, cradding it on the grass at first.
- 22:50Outfield, shallow, playing Carruthers around to the right.
- 22:53Carruthers around the bunt, fouls it off.
- 22:55Mask of Rudolph, strike one.
- 23:00Note Pappas throwing the cup bullpen in left field.
- 23:03Pappas scheduled to be the second of three cup pitchers in the afternoon.
- 23:08No rules that say only three men can work.
- 23:16A one-strike count on Carruthers.
- 23:18Capiton weighing on the grass at first base.
- 23:21Carruthers around the bunt, bunts it down to third base line.
- 23:23It's a good bunt.
- 23:24Sanna has to come into field, throws to first.
- 23:26M. Dime with Becker covers.
- 23:28Perfect bunt by Don Carruthers.
- 23:30Right down the line, push it past Jenkins for Sanna to come in and make the play.
- 23:34Healy goes to third, spire to second.
- 23:37Carruthers retired on their sacrifice.
- 23:40Sanna to Becker's cover.
- 23:42And Willie Mays will be the Giants batter.
- 23:44Next time you pull into a gas station, remember to pull out your Bank of America card.
- 23:48It's money to get you where you want to go.
- 23:51Mays, safe on Williams' error in the first inning, later scored the Giants' first run.
- 23:55Mays had a towering drive to the left field fence.
- 23:58Williams lost the ball in the sun, had it skip off the tip of his glove.
- 24:03Cubs play the infield back as Jenkins works from a windup and Mays swings in a breaking pitch and misses, strike one.
- 24:09Healy at third, spire at second, one out top of the second, and the Giants lead 3-0, threatening to get more.
- 24:17Jenkins with a play.
- 24:19Sliders a called strike on the outside corner.
- 24:23There was the good slider that Lon mentioned.
- 24:27Jenkins quickly in front of Mays, 0-2.
- 24:31Big right hander under the motion, 0-2 pitch, breaking pitch, loop to left center field.
- 24:35A long run for Williams. On the run, cannot get it.
- 24:38Drops in front of him. One run scores, two run scores. Mays trying for second. He's got a sliding double.
- 24:44Mays with a looping fly ball on the left center. It drops between Williams and Bundy.

- 25:17Bundy very shallow in center field. Williams the same way and left against Pouenis.
- 25:21Jenkins with a play. Line drive, pass Becker.
- 25:24Mays hit right field. Mays held up. Now comes the third. Will not try to score.
- 25:29As Cardinal hustles the ball in a line drive just out of the reach of Glenn Beckert.
- 25:33Mays had to hold up at second thinking Beckert might be able to make the catch.
- 25:36The ball went through into right field. Willey moved over to third. Tito is on it first with a base hit.
- 25:41Tito now two for two. And Tito hit that single about three times as hard as he hit the double in the first inning.
- 25:48Here's Dave Kingman who walked this quarter a run in the first inning.
- 25:53Giants with two runs in, one out. Runners at the corners. Mays at third, Pouenis at first.
- 25:58The Cubs will play the infield double play deep.
- 26:07Pouenis moving away from first. Jenkins looks there, comes to the play.

- 26:19One strike out on the right end of batting Dave Kingman.
- 26:29Jenkins sets up the belt, the O-1 pitch. Popped up foul off first base drifting back into the stands or
- 26:37like over the seats into the parking lot.
- 26:42Jenkins in front of Kingman, O-2.
- 26:48Rudolph out to talk with the Cubs pitcher.
- 26:52Conversation now breaks up as Rudolph heads back behind the plate.

- 27:04Pouenis is shorted at first.
- 27:10Jenkins ready, O-2 pitch.
- 27:12Fastball inside at the golf ball one. Kingman leaning over that plate, he's there to be looking for a breaking pitch.

- 27:25A ball and two strikes on the Giants third baseman.
- 27:31Jenkins with a play. Breaking pitch, swung on it, missed, strike three.
- 27:36Kingman down on strikes for out number two. Jenkins gets his first strike out. We pause for station identification.
- 27:42This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 27:44If you want to hear the sounds of the city, listen to the Terry McGovern show, 4 to 8, right here on KSFO in San Francisco.
- 27:52It's the sound of the city.
- 27:59Willey McCovey with a bloop single to left center in the first inning to drive in a run to Giants batter.
- 28:06McCovey checks takes low ball one. Mays at third, Pouenis at first, two outs, two runs in.
- 28:11We're in the top of the second on the Giants lead five to nothing.
- 28:14The opener of the Cactus League season from Scotchdale, Arizona. Sun baked Scotchdale, Arizona.
- 28:24I heard that from you last year.
- 28:28Jenkins delivers outside.
- 28:31Ball pops out of Rudolph's club, but rolls only a couple of feet away.
- 28:34Jenkins falls behind on McCovey, two balls and no strikes.
- 28:45The 2-0 pitch to McCovey, swung on and missed, and McCovey had himself a rip.
- 28:50Jenkins appeared to take a bit off the pitch.
- 28:54McCovey had quite a swing.
- 28:58A one and two count. Jenkins works quickly.
- 29:00Breaking ball, line to right field. Cardinal is there, makes the catch up over his head.
- 29:05McCovey hit it on the nose, but right at Cardinal for the outs.
- 29:08The Giants in the second, two runs on two hits.
- 29:12There were no errors. Two runners left on.
- 29:15So at the end of an inning and a half, the Giants lead it by a score of five to nothing.
- 29:20They estimate that Northern California will buy almost a half a million new cars this year.
- 29:25And lots of those buyers will save considerable money at Allstate.
- 29:28That's right, the Allstate auto finance plan through a cooperating lender.
- 29:33You didn't know they had a finance plan, finance car?
- 29:36Well, they do.
- 29:38Or rather, your Allstate agent can help arrange a loan at a money-saving interest rate through the Allstate auto finance plan.
- 29:43Here's what you do.
- 29:45When you find a deal on the new car you want, talk to an Allstate agent.
- 29:49They can usually help you save important money on the financing.
- 29:52Some folks arrange for their loan in advance.
- 29:54Others pick out their car first, then talk to Allstate.
- 29:57It works either way.
- 29:59Now's the time to save some money, and now's the time to look into the Allstate auto finance plan.
- 30:03When it comes to insurance or financing your car, you're in good hands with Allstate.
- 30:22For the Cubs, the first batter for the Cubs, the third baseman, right hand batting Ron Sano.
- 30:27Sano hitting fifth in the order.
- 30:29Followed by the right fielder Jose Cardinal and shortstop Don Kessinger.
- 30:38Sano, really trimmed down for this early in the spring training.
- 30:47Don through it, his kicks and throws.
- 30:49Slider for a strike in the outside corner.
- 30:58Sano, last year about at 267, takes just outside a 1-1 count.
- 31:04Played in 154 games, had 148 hits, 21 home runs, 88 RBIs, swing and a miss on a breaking pitch.
- 31:12Carruthers in front, a ball and two strikes.
- 31:17Mundy opened the bottom of the first with a double to left off Carruthers,
- 31:20then Don retired to next for a men's Becker and Williams on fly ball to left field,
- 31:24and Pepitone on a ground ball, a second.
- 31:26Now back to Carruthers, his spirit turns throws to first out number one.
- 31:30Sano hit a hard one hopper.
- 31:32Carruthers check out the glove, picked it up, turned it into an easy out.
- 31:38The one is away and right hand batting Jose Cardinal will move in.
- 31:43If you've got an apartment, you've got a lot to lose,
- 31:45so it's smart to get some all-state renter's insurance
- 31:48and protect your household furnishings against loss from fire, explosions, and many other hazards.
- 31:55Cardinal right in a batter, takes low and away, ball one.
- 32:07Cardinal acquired from Milwaukee in the offseason.
- 32:10Browns went up the middle, it'll go through in the center field for a base hit.
- 32:14Mays charges in, bare hands it, throws quickly back to the infield.
- 32:17Cardinal takes a big turn at first and then holds on.
- 32:21Now with a second down off Carruthers, shortstop down, Kessinger will move in.
- 32:29Kessinger batted 258 with the Cubs last season, a switch batter.
- 32:37Kessinger successfully made the transition to a switch batter in the big leagues,
- 32:42something that Chris Byers is now trying to do for the Giants.
- 32:45Carruthers steps, throws to first base, drives Cardinal back to the bag, no tag by McCovey.
- 32:51Cardinal at first, one out.
- 32:53Bottom of the second, the Giants lead the Cubs, five to nothing.
- 32:59Carruthers again throws to first and again Cardinal is back.
- 33:07Giants play Kessinger as a bit of a lace winner.
- 33:11He did not exaggerate against them as they did when he first started to switch it.
- 33:16Carruthers fires, balls striking the outside corner.
- 33:24Infield straight away, double play deep.
- 33:30Carruthers takes a look at first, Cardinal with a good lead.
- 33:34Don delivers just outside.
- 33:39A one-one count on the Cubs shortstop Don Kessinger.
- 33:47Kessinger had been the Cubs leadoff man, but the job is now being given to Rick Mundy.
- 33:53Cannot throw to first base, Cardinal back, beating the tag by McCovey.
- 34:02Carruthers checking signs with Fran Healy.
- 34:07The one-one pitch on its way, high, ball two.
- 34:16Ferguson Jenkins has been scheduled to pitch three innings, apparently will not as he now has the warm-up jacket on his running in the outfield.
- 34:22So I'm glad he pitches in those first two innings.
- 34:26The two-one pitch to Kessinger, bounded foul to the right, and Carruthers and Kessinger go even at two and two.
- 34:42Carruthers with a new baseball.
- 34:52Cardinal moving away from first as Carruthers looks there, comes to the plate to two, high, ball three.
- 35:00Carruthers, got a full count, three balls, two strikes.
- 35:14Carruthers off the mound.
- 35:16Tito for one-e's yelling something into him. Carruthers nodding, okay, whatever was it Tito had to say.
- 35:27Cardinal with his lead.
- 35:29Carruthers steps off.
- 35:35Now Don Reddy, Cardinal away from first.
- 35:38He is running, pitches it high and near the left center field.
- 35:40Mays drifting back, has room, makes the catch, throws back into the infield.
- 35:45Cardinal was all the way down to second base, has to retreat to first.
- 35:49Counter number 15, Ken Rudolph catches.
- 35:53Counter Ken Rudolph.
- 35:56Rudolph was with the Cubs, San Antonio.
- 36:04Last year with the Cubs farm club at Tacoma, but spent, he's getting 25 games with the big club, hitting 197, about a 285, and triple-A ball.
- 36:12Right end of batter. Don Carruthers, pitches lice foul outside first base, strike one.
- 36:21Cardinal at first, two outs. Bottom of the second, Giants in front five to nothing.
- 36:36Carruthers sets, the 0-1 pitch, a bit too low, 1-1 count.
- 36:53Cardinal getting a lead.
- 36:56Mr. Rudolph a let-up, misses low, ball two.
- 37:03Two-and-one count.
- 37:07Ken Rudolph, the Cubs right end of batting catcher.
- 37:12Cardinal moves away from first.
- 37:162-1 pitch, lined in the center field for a base hit.
- 37:20Cardinal will go to third as Mays over in the right center, cuts the ball off, throws in towards the plate.
- 37:24Now Rudolph moves up to second base.
- 37:27Ball off McCovey's glove, but Healy backing up fields it.
- 37:33Mays, feeling the ball in right center, cut loose with a throw towards the plate.
- 37:37It was a high throw over the head of the infielders.
- 37:40And Rudolph, able to move up to second as Cardinal goes around to third.
- 37:48Left-hander batting Pat Burke will be a pinch better for Jenkins.
- 38:00Burke, stockley-built.
- 38:08The San Antonio, most of last year, about a 279.
- 38:14Pat takes high for ball one. Burke, 6 feet, 210 pounds.
- 38:2223, 24 years old.
- 38:27An infielder by Treg.
- 38:29The Reathers from a line-up misses high, ball two.
- 38:33The Reathers behind on the pinch batter, Pat Burke, two balls and no strikes.
- 38:37Jose Cardinal at third.
- 38:39Ken Rudolph at second.
- 38:41Two outs.
- 38:42Giants in front, five to nothing in the bottom of the second.
- 38:49Cardinal down the line.
- 38:50The Reathers misses very high, ball three.
- 38:54Healy, asked for time, runs out to the mound to talk with.
- 38:58Giants young white, ender.
- 39:10Healy now, moves back behind to play.
- 39:19The on-deck circle for the Cubs, their leadoff man and center fielder, Rick Mundy.
- 39:23Three outpitch, ball strike in the inside corner.
- 39:37The Reathers, 3-1 pitch.
- 39:42Just outside, ball four.
- 39:45So Burke draws for one, first off the Reathers.
- 39:50At most, up the base is Cardinal as at third, Rudolph at second.
- 39:58And Rick Mundy, who doubled the left field in the first inning, will be the Chicago batter.
- 40:09Mundy, with great speed, has always had good power to the opposite field and in the left center.
- 40:18Finch runner for Burke, Jose Ortiz takes over at first base as a runner for Pat Burke.
- 40:34Mundy, left hander, hitter.
- 40:36Time, crew, there's some windup.
- 40:39Fastball as a strike.
- 40:41Cardinal at third, Rudolph at second, Ortiz at first.
- 40:45Time, pleading five to nothing in the bottom of inning number two.
- 40:55Reathers, kick, throws, 0-1.
- 40:58Fastball, call, strike two.
- 41:04The grandstand umpire is not in complete agreement with that call.
- 41:13Reathers, in front of Mundy, 0-2.
- 41:22Three runners lead away, the 0-2 pitch.
- 41:25High and outside, Healy had to reach up the stab, that pitch, keep it from going to the screen,
- 41:30and there's a sale.
- 41:36One-and-two count.
- 41:40Left hander batting Mundy, waiting at the plate.
- 41:46The one-two pitch on its way.
- 41:48Popped up behind second base, fire drifting back, Mays coming in.
- 41:52It's Mays who calls, he's got it.
- 41:56The side retired on a pop fly, the Willie Mays in very short center field.
- 42:01Now if the Reathers gets out of the inning, the Cubs no runs on two hits, no jointers,
- 42:06three runners left at the end of two full, the Giants five, the Cubs nothing.

- 54:24Hart batting right-handed last year, plagued by arm problems after an arm operation.
- 54:30Takes low for a ball, one and oh.
- 54:32Jimmy could certainly help out if he could bounce back.
- 54:39One-oh pitch, swung on and missed.
- 54:41One and one.
- 54:43Pappas came in on the third inning.
- 54:45Jenkins giving up all five of the giant runs.
- 54:48Jenkins, wild, which is unusual for him.
- 54:51He had 11 complete games in which he didn't walk a man last year.
- 54:54Pitch is low for a ball.
- 54:56Two and one.
- 54:57And had the best record, control record in the league,
- 55:02walking an average of just slightly over one man per game.
- 55:08Four for a ball to Hart, and it's three and one.
- 55:11Jenkins obviously having his control difficulties because of the early spring training.
- 55:19Three, one, pitch, low, ball four, and Hart draws the base on balls.
- 55:22The first baserunner off Pappas, said Jimmy, goes to first base, is Willie Mays, will be the batter.
- 55:27Mays has been on twice.
- 55:30He's safe on an air and scored a run in the first inning when Billy Williams dropped his fly ball at the base of the fence in left field,
- 55:35and then he doubled in the left center field to drive in two runs.
- 55:39Both those appearances against Jenkins, and now he faces Pappas here with Hart, a runner at first base.
- 55:45One man down.
- 55:47Mays swings and fouls it away.
- 55:49Strike one.
- 55:50Willie reaching for a breaking pitch that time.
- 55:59Strike one, Kev.
- 56:01Jenkins went two innings, gave up five runs on four hits.
- 56:06He struck out one, he walked three.
- 56:09Mays has the outfield swung around to the left as he swings and misses a high pass ball.
- 56:14Strike two.
- 56:18Nothing in two that counts to Mays.
- 56:19Pappas is out in front of him.
- 56:24Hart gets a short lead at first.
- 56:26Pappas delivers to Mays.
- 56:27He takes low, dug out by Rudolph as the ball hits the ground.
- 56:31He was able to block it, prevent it from going to the screen, and keeping Jimmy Hart at first base.
- 56:36Giants leading five to one.
- 56:39Don Carruthers going the first three innings for the Giants.
- 56:42We'll have a new pitcher for San Francisco.
- 56:44It'll be John DiAcquisto.
- 56:48Pappas pitch.
- 56:49Mays fouls it back.
- 56:54It stays at one ball, two strikes.
- 56:57DiAcquisto, a young fellow who can throw hard.
- 57:02Last year, struck out 244 men in 233 innings.
- 57:09Pitching for Decatur, he broke by the Blues, strikeout record there.
- 57:14Pitch to Mays, outside.
- 57:16Rudolph had to spear that one to prevent it from being a wild pitch, and it's two and two.
- 57:22152 members of the Giants boosters here today.
- 57:26A record number of boosters coming to spring training.
- 57:31Pappas steps off the rubber and bluffs Hart back into first base.
- 57:34Two-two count to Mays, one out, one on.
- 57:36Giants lead five to one.
- 57:38Pitch to Willie, swung on, fly ball to center field.
- 57:42Waiting for it is Rick Mundy, has it, and Mays is retired for the second out as Hart retreats to first base.
- 57:50There's nothing like the excitement of Major League Baseball, and there's no other car quite like the 72 Monte Carlo by Chevrolet.
- 57:57The agility of a sport car, the ride and comfort of a luxury car.
- 58:00Chevrolet wants your new Monte Carlo to be the best car you ever owned.
- 58:05Tito Fuentes has doubled in his singles.
- 58:07He's driven in a run, and he scored one up here batting left-handed against Pappas, facing Pappas for the first time, first time today.
- 58:17Hart remains at first, Fuentes follows it off, strike one.
- 58:24Don't forget, opening day, Thursday at Candlestick Park this year.
- 58:27That is Thursday, April 6th, San Diego, and then that's Sunday on the 9th of April, a doubleheader against the Padres.
- 58:41Tickets available for all the Giants home games.
- 58:46Pappas pitched to 20. Line drive to Beckert off his glove into right field.
- 58:50Hart will go to second base and hold as Cardinal comes up.
- 58:53That was a line shot, and Beckert reached up.
- 58:56That ball just skipped off the tip of his glove out into right field.
- 59:03And Dave Kingman will be the batter to see if they give that credit bet as a base hit for 20.
- 59:15His stinging line drive off the mitt of Beckert.
- 59:18That is the first hit issued by Pappas.
- 59:21And Kingman waits. Swings and misses, strike one.
- 59:24Dave has walked and he's struck out. He's scored a run.
- 59:28Kingman trying to learn defense at third base.
- 59:33And Mr. Charlie Fox trying to put Kingman in the lineup as an infielder, bounding ball to the left, then it's strike two.
- 59:41The Giants have a difficulty right now. It's infield depth.
- 59:45They have a lot of people who can play third base, but they have very few who can play short stuff.
- 59:59One-eighth at first. Hart is at second with two down and Kingman waiting with an O2 count.
- 1:00:05The O2 pitch, low and away for a ball and it's one and two. Ed Goodson on deck.
- 1:00:12Ed taking over for McCovey at first base.
- 1:00:16Pappas in front of Kingman, a ball and two strikes. The outfield deep and around to the left.
- 1:00:21Pappas delivers. Kingman takes low in the dirt for a ball too.
- 1:00:24Rudolph is doing a good job of boxing those low pitches, giving them from going to the screen.
- 1:00:31Two and two count. Kingman has the infield and outfield backed up against him.
- 1:00:39Straightaway stance for the big guy, six feet, six inches tall.
- 1:00:43Low and inside, slip pitch and it's a three and two count now on Kingman.
- 1:00:49The runners will be going with two men down.
- 1:00:53Kingman slams a dramatic home run in the final game of the regular season last year.
- 1:00:59Three, two pitches, low, a ball, four blocked by Rudolph. Kingman goes to first.
- 1:01:03Hart moves over to third, 20s to second and Ed Goodson will come up to be the batter.
- 1:01:07Kingman's home run in San Diego.
- 1:01:12On the final day of the season, the Giants clinch the pennants.
- 1:01:18Day in a second game with a grand slam home run last year.
- 1:01:23Ed Goodson, left hand batter, here's the fellow that knows how to play bat.
- 1:01:29He has good bat control, takes a strike at the knees on one.
- 1:01:34He is also a fine defensive player at first base.
- 1:01:37Giants worked with Goodson last year as a third baseman at Phoenix.
- 1:01:43All the way out of play and Goodson has a two strike count.
- 1:01:49It was in 20 games of the Giants last year, 42 batting appearances, that eight hits.
- 1:01:55With Phoenix he batted 294.
- 1:02:00Bases loaded with two down. Kingman at first, 20s at second, Hart at third.
- 1:02:05The Giants lead five to one. We're in the fourth inning.
- 1:02:09Pitch to Goodson. A strike call. He is out on strike.
- 1:02:13There's Pappas give a good pitch over the outside corner.
- 1:02:16Two runs, one hit, no errors, three runners left on.
- 1:02:19We go to the bottom of the fourth, the score, the Giants five and the Cubs one.
- 1:02:27Couple of changes for the Giants.
- 1:02:30The equistos comes in to do the pitching and Jimmy Rosario goes in to play center field.
- 1:02:40Perrithers went three innings, gave up one run, four hits, struck out one and walked two.
- 1:02:49A little bit on the equisto.
- 1:02:53John Francis D. Equisto, that's D apostrophe A-C-Q-U-I-S-T-O.
- 1:03:02San Diego, 6'2", 205 pounds. He is 20 years old.
- 1:03:12This is his third season.
- 1:03:15It was the Giants' first selection, June 1970 free agent draft.
- 1:03:20Last year he struck out 244 men in 233 innings.
- 1:03:24That generally means a pitcher throws hard and he does.
- 1:03:27Kessinger, the batter, tries to punt the ball and fouls it off strike one.
- 1:03:30D'Equisto, a right-hander, wears glasses.
- 1:03:34He has appeared to have a little control problem in early spring training,
- 1:03:40but that would be natural.
- 1:03:41He walked 124 men in the 233 innings he pitched last year at Decatur.
- 1:03:46110 and lost 13.
- 1:03:49Kessinger batting left-handed against the right-hander, John D. Equisto.
- 1:03:57The left-hander plays up even with a bag at third.
- 1:04:00The outfield rather shallow and around the left to strike one pitch.
- 1:04:02Oh, look out, John. That was a fastball in at his feet and he was hit by that pitch.
- 1:04:06Couldn't get out of the way.
- 1:04:09Kessinger, hit by D'Equisto with that pitch.
- 1:04:12He tried to jump out of the way.
- 1:04:15He was anxious to get out of there.
- 1:04:17He didn't want to get out. He's going to be hit by that pitch.
- 1:04:20Hit him in the foot. He's all right and he goes to first base.
- 1:04:23Now, Ken Rudolph will be the batter.
- 1:04:25He's going to be the parither's his first time up, right-hand batting catcher.
- 1:04:28Runner at first.
- 1:04:31Nobody down.
- 1:04:32The Giants lead five to one and we are in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:04:35The Giants picked up three runs in the first, two in the second.
- 1:04:38Cubs got a run in the third.
- 1:04:41D'Equisto working from a stretch as Kessinger leads from first.
- 1:04:44And the lob throw to first base.
- 1:04:49Now, you can understand that this is quite a big moment for this young fellow.
- 1:04:53He's bound to be a little nervous. Pitch is up high for a ball.
- 1:04:55It's only spring training to everybody else.
- 1:04:57Time to enjoy themselves.
- 1:04:58But for D'Equisto, he's pitching in a major league uniform.
- 1:05:03He's wanting to show the boss what he can do.
- 1:05:10Ground ball to right side.
- 1:05:11Base hit on the hit and run as Kessinger goes to third.
- 1:05:13Rudolph hitting behind the runner beautifully.
- 1:05:16Drilled that one through the hole into right field and the runners at first and third.
- 1:05:21Rudolph really went with that pitch.
- 1:05:23They sent Kessinger.
- 1:05:26And now they're runners at first and third and Milt Pappas will be the batter.
- 1:05:30And Pappas is a good hitter for a pitcher.
- 1:05:37He will face D'Equisto with runners at first and third and nobody down.
- 1:05:40The Giants play a double play position.
- 1:05:43Willing to give up the run if they can get a ground ball and make two outs on it.
- 1:05:48A hit batsman and a hit and run single and the Cubs are in business with runners at first and third.
- 1:05:54D'Equisto working from the stretch.
- 1:05:57The runners lead away from first and third.
- 1:05:58The pitch, Pappas turns the puck, pushes it back toward the mound.
- 1:06:01D'Equisto has it, will go to first.
- 1:06:02Does in time, the runner Kessinger holds at third and Rudolph moves up to second base.
- 1:06:07So Pappas with the sacrifice, moving the runner to second,
- 1:06:11is thrown out by D'Equisto for number one and Rick Mundy will be the batter.
- 1:06:19Whatever you need for your home, there's a good chance you can find it at Long's Drug Stores and at a lower price.
- 1:06:25Long's has 59 stores throughout California and Hawaii.
- 1:06:30Second and third occupied now on that sacrifice, but Rick Mundy, the batter.
- 1:06:34Mundy has doubled to left field and flied to center.
- 1:06:37Popped up with the bases loaded to end the second inning. Left hand batter.
- 1:06:41D'Equisto working from the windup.
- 1:06:43The pitch is a strike, a fastball good on the outside, Oremond.
- 1:06:48Kessinger is a runner at third, Rudolph at second.
- 1:06:51Outfield shades Mundy slightly to the left.
- 1:06:56Rick, a star at Arizona State, very close to Scottsdale here.
- 1:07:01Pitch low, blocked by Healy and it's one and one.
- 1:07:05It's difficult on a catcher when a pitcher throws as hard as D'Equisto does if he gets the ball in the dirt.
- 1:07:11It's a little tough for that catcher to block the ball, but Healy got down on that one in a hurry and kept it from going to the screen.
- 1:07:17Rudolph away from second. Kessinger moves away from third.
- 1:07:21Mundy waits for the one-one pitch.
- 1:07:23A pop-up to the left side in short left field into center field.
- 1:07:27Now it's fire goes out. Rosario comes in. Rosario makes the catch.
- 1:07:30Kessinger bluffs and Rosario fires the ball by Healy, but it's backed up by D'Equisto, who was in the right place where he should be.
- 1:07:37And he picked up the ball and Kessinger had to hold at third base.
- 1:07:41So Rosario's throw went through Goodson, then Healy, but D'Equisto backing it up, got the ball.
- 1:07:47And Kessinger had to remain at third.
- 1:07:51So Mundy pops up to Rosario in center field for the second out.
- 1:07:56And Glenn Beckert will be the batter. Beckert has flied out and has grounded out.
- 1:08:02Second and third occupied with two men down.
- 1:08:05Giants lead five to one. We're in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:08:10Rookie John D'Equisto during the pitching for the Giants from the windup.
- 1:08:14His pitch to Beckert, high for a ball, one and oh.
- 1:08:18He gets it up there in a hurry. The Giants have a couple of young hitters who can throw a heart.
- 1:08:26D'Equisto is one of them, whether he will be ready this year to join the Major Leagues.
- 1:08:32And now D'Equisto steps off the rubber. Are they going to call a ball?
- 1:08:36He stepped up on the rubber, but I don't know if they're calling a ball.
- 1:08:40He stepped up on the rubber. He said he did not go into his windup.
- 1:08:44Then he stepped off the rubber, but the first base umpire.
- 1:08:51Paul Runge says that he had started into his windup.
- 1:08:55D'Equisto is claiming that he just stepped up on the rubber to get the sign,
- 1:08:59and he is allowed to step off the rubber if he hasn't gone into the motion.
- 1:09:05The umpire claims that he had gone into the motion.
- 1:09:08So coming into scores, Kessinger on the block and Rudolph moves over to third.
- 1:09:12Kessinger made a long bluff down the third baseline,
- 1:09:16and D'Equisto moved, stepped back off the rubber,
- 1:09:20but he had already made a motion going into his windup.
- 1:09:25So it is ruled a ball. The run comes into score.
- 1:09:30It's now five to two game.
- 1:09:33The Giants in front, and Rudolph has moved over to third.
- 1:09:37Bechard waits with a count of one and oh.
- 1:09:41Two down, a run in.
- 1:09:44D'Equisto working from the windup again, looks over at third, and Rudolph now delivers to the plate.
- 1:09:50A strike, slider good, it's one and one.
- 1:09:57Ball on the strike to count, and Bechard turns to talk to the home plate umpire,
- 1:10:03Art Williams, about that call.
- 1:10:06D'Equisto ready with the one-one pitch.
- 1:10:09A rounded foul to the left, and it's a ball and two strikes.
- 1:10:21A ball and two strikes.
- 1:10:24They count to Glenn Bechard.
- 1:10:31Here's the one-two pitch, low for a ball two, two and two.
- 1:10:44Two and two count to Glenn Bechard, batting with a run in and two minutes.
- 1:10:51D'Equisto's pitch, swung on and missed.
- 1:10:53He foul-tipped it into Healy's mitt.
- 1:10:55Bechard is out on strike.
- 1:10:57One run, one hit, no errors.
- 1:11:00The score is what they left on.
- 1:11:01At the end of four, the score, the Giants five and the Cubs two.
- 1:11:06Inning number five, the Giants leading five to two, and Bobby Barnes will lead off.
- 1:11:12Barnes has not had the ball on the infield.
- 1:11:14He hit into a double play in the first inning and then grounded to third in the third.
- 1:11:19Bill Rigan gets up to start loosening up in the Cubs bullpen.
- 1:11:23They probably have to use an extra pitcher today because Jenkins went only two innings.
- 1:11:30Bobby Barnes, right-hand batter, no pappas, right-hand pitcher.
- 1:11:33The outfield deep for Barnes.
- 1:11:34The pitch to Bobby, look out, it's inside for a ball, one and oh.
- 1:11:38Kenny Henderson and then Fran Healy to follow.
- 1:11:42Don Carrilers went three innings.
- 1:11:45Don will be our postgame guest as soon as we clean up his language.
- 1:11:50Pitch to Bobby is swung on and missed, strike one.
- 1:11:58Count of a ball and a strike.
- 1:12:02Barnes, Henderson and Healy against pappas in the fifth inning.
- 1:12:06A change-up is good for a strike and it's one and two.
- 1:12:11Edith Daniels says, say hello to the girls at headquarters 6A.
- 1:12:17I assume that's safe to say.
- 1:12:20Pitch is low for a ball and the count is a ball and two strikes, two balls and two strikes to Bob.
- 1:12:26Two and two count.
- 1:12:29Infield backed up now with two strikes on Bobby who crouches at the plate, waits for the 2-2 pitch
- 1:12:33and hits one deep into right-center field.
- 1:12:35That one is going to be in between them, bouncing off the fence at the 4-17 mark.
- 1:12:39Barnes is turning it on, he's around second.
- 1:12:41He glides for third, trips almost, balls, keeps his balance and goes into third with a three-base hit.
- 1:12:46Barnes drilling one up the alley in right-center and as he grounded second base,
- 1:12:54he was just sort of gliding toward third and looking back over his shoulder, he tripped,
- 1:13:00almost fell down, maintained his balance and went into third base.
- 1:13:04So he is open with a triple, a second hit off pappas.
- 1:13:08And Kenny Henderson who has grounded out and popped up will be the batter.
- 1:13:12Bill Thompson and George Cooper listening to pornographic tapes.
- 1:13:27Pitch to Henderson, swung on line drive, base hit center field, coming in to score is Bobby Bonds.
- 1:13:32Henderson hits the first pitch for a solid single, the Giants have their sixth run
- 1:13:36and it's a 6-2 ballgame, the Giants in front.
- 1:13:41Fran Healy will be the next hitter, a triple and a single against pappas here to lead off the fifth inning
- 1:13:47and the Giants have increased their, did he say naughty words?
- 1:13:53Part of our tape will be missing because we have to take out the naughty words.
- 1:13:56You're not allowed to listen to those.
- 1:14:01Healy has walked and he's grounded out, he's scored a run, takes outside for a ball on all.
- 1:14:08Fran came in against the Cubs last year in a bases loaded situation against Phil Rigg and he doubled off the center field.
- 1:14:14Pinch drive in, three runs, Giants eventually came from behind in that ballgame to win it.
- 1:14:26Henderson getting a pretty good sized lead at first.
- 1:14:28Pitch to Healy is hit high in the air in the short left center field, who wants it?
- 1:14:33Rick Mundy and Mundy makes the catch in left center for out number one.
- 1:14:38Healy pops out to the Cubs center fielder and Chris Spire comes to the plate.
- 1:14:45And now let's get ready for a big inning, just pop open a good cold hand, there's always room for another brother.
- 1:14:56Spire has walked and grounded a second.
- 1:15:01Batting left handed, takes a strike going one.
- 1:15:05Our producer engineer Rich Smalley is doing his South Pacific imitation, his plantation hat.
- 1:15:14Strike one, count to Spire, throw to first base back in there.
- 1:15:18This is Kenny Henderson, one out, a run in.
- 1:15:22Spire switch batting, batting left handed, line drive to second base.
- 1:15:25Bechert has a flip throw to first in time to get Henderson a double fly.
- 1:15:29Good play by Glenn Bechert on that solid line drive off the back of Chris Spire, turned into a double fly.
- 1:15:37And here in the fifth inning for the Giants, one run, two hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 1:15:44We go to the bottom of the fifth and the Giants lead it by a score of six to two.
- 1:15:50Peter Rebson is one of America's fastest rising young race drivers.
- 1:15:54So Standard Oil sent a Chevron low lead to France and asked Rebson to run performance tests at the world famous Le Mans racetrack
- 1:16:00in a car that can use low lead to see what happens to performance when you use a reduced lead gasoline.
- 1:16:06For a performance test of gasoline, Le Mans has to be as tough as they come.
- 1:16:11I've done a number of laps now, pushing the car very hard, and Chevron low lead has really been delivered.
- 1:16:18It's giving me quick acceleration out of the hairpin turns.
- 1:16:22And on the three mile long Mosaune straight where you can really wind an engine up, Chevron's been fabulous.
- 1:16:30Chevron low lead regular enriched with premium gasoline components to continue to give quality performance.
- 1:16:36And for cars that can run on gasoline without lead, Chevron unleaded, both with F310, available only along the Chevron way.
- 1:16:50A couple more changes for the Giants.
- 1:16:52Now in the bottom of the fifth inning, Bernie Williams goes in to play left field.
- 1:16:57Jimmy Rosario is in center field, and Gary Matthews takes over in right field.
- 1:17:03Gary was with Amarillo last year.
- 1:17:09He is 6'3, 190 pounder from Southern California, Sam Fernando.
- 1:17:16And last year he hit 279 with Amarillo, hit 279 for Fresno in 1970 at 322, and his first year at Decatur in 1969.
- 1:17:26He is 21 years old, and everybody figures that he is a cinch to make it.
- 1:17:31Great speed, good power.
- 1:17:34Billy Williams leads off against John DiAcquisto on swings and misses the first pitch strike once.
- 1:17:39Williams, the cut left fielder up here, has flied out and walked and scored a run.
- 1:17:42The Giants lead 6-2. We're in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:17:46DiAcquisto's next pitch, high for a ball, it's 1-1.
- 1:17:49Pete Reiser, the third base coach for the Cubs, the first base coach, is Ernie Banks.
- 1:17:54John Cumberland starts loosening up in the bullpen.
- 1:17:59No, it's not Cumberland.
- 1:18:02He could skip pit lock down there.
- 1:18:05Swing by Williams and a high drive into left center field.
- 1:18:08It will be playable for Rosario. He has it.
- 1:18:10He has it. Pour out number one, so Williams flies to Rosario.
- 1:18:15If you're in the left field, small line, please get behind the fence.
- 1:18:20Bout of number eight, Joe Pepitone, first base.
- 1:18:23Skip pit lock is throwing the Giants bullpen.
- 1:18:26Cumberland was scheduled to be the third pitcher today, but maybe pit lock will be the man who will take over.
- 1:18:32One man down, Ron, or Joe Pepitone now, the better, to face DiAcquisto
- 1:18:38and pops the first pitch into short left center field.
- 1:18:41Rosario is there for this one. He makes the catch for the second out.
- 1:18:46Pepitone and Williams flying to center field against DiAcquisto, and Ron Sando will be the batter now.
- 1:18:51Here's something to remember.
- 1:18:53Anytime you have a motoring need, there are more than 23,000 standard stations and Chevron dealers ready to help you along the Chevron way.
- 1:19:03Two down, Sando has grounded out and struck out.
- 1:19:07DiAcquisto for the first time, delivers, fouled off to the right, strike one.
- 1:19:15Giants scored three times in the first inning, twice in the second, once in the top half of this fifth inning.
- 1:19:20The Cubs get a run in the third and a run in the fourth.
- 1:19:23Carreira's pitched the first three, DiAcquisto now working his second inning.
- 1:19:27Curveball, line drive, base hit into left center field.
- 1:19:29DiAcquisto hung that pitch. Rosario over to field, fires into second face and holding with a single of Sando.
- 1:19:36DiAcquisto hung that curveball right out of the play and Sando busted it into left center.
- 1:19:41Today's game is being brought to you by standard stations and independent Chevron dealers.
- 1:19:45Bank of America, all state insurance companies.
- 1:19:49Jose Cardinal has singled and he's flying deep to center.
- 1:19:55Sando at first.
- 1:19:59Pitch to Cardinal, high inside for a ball.
- 1:20:02Dave Kingman probably thinks his third base is a cinch to play.
- 1:20:06He hasn't had a chance over there today so far.
- 1:20:08He's just stood around not doing nothing, waiting for his turn to pass.
- 1:20:14One and O count to Cardinal, right hand batting right fielder.
- 1:20:17Flop throw to first base by DiAcquisto.
- 1:20:25DiAcquisto working from a stretch, two down, Sando at first, high fastball for a ball.
- 1:20:30Got a two and O to Cardinal.
- 1:20:33DiAcquisto telegraphs his curveball a little bit.
- 1:20:36They're going to have to work on him in that phase of his pitching.
- 1:20:40It's a tendency for young pitchers to sort of wrap their wrist,
- 1:20:44curl their wrist when they're going to throw a curveball to get a little more spin on it.
- 1:20:48Very easy for the opposing coaches and hitters to pick it up.
- 1:20:51Swing and a miss at a fastball.
- 1:20:54And when I use the term fastball, I use it seriously in this case.
- 1:20:58He busted that one in there and Cardinal walked around outside the batter's box,
- 1:21:02talking to himself, proudly congratulating himself on still being able to walk up to the plate.
- 1:21:10Two out, runner at first, two one count.
- 1:21:13DiAcquisto's stretch, looks at first, the two one pitch, fastball filed away.
- 1:21:19And Cardinal was going one way as the ball was going the other.
- 1:21:23Jose really wasn't excited about facing that one.
- 1:21:25It's two and two.
- 1:21:27In spring training, these hitters, especially the veterans who have a job made,
- 1:21:32are not too anxious to get up there and swing a bat against young, wild right-handers, or left-handers for that matter.
- 1:21:42Sato leads away at first with two down.
- 1:21:46Fastball is a bit low, and it's a full count of three and two.
- 1:21:52Sato will be running.
- 1:21:55A few changes for the Cubs next inning.
- 1:22:01Manager Leo DeRosier going to get some lineup changes in there.
- 1:22:06Three, two, pitch.
- 1:22:08One on line drive foul, past third base.
- 1:22:12Hit hard, but pulled foul by a couple of feet.
- 1:22:17Spring training is time when the managers want to get a lot of people in there to play.
- 1:22:24And all of a sudden you find yourself looking at rosters,
- 1:22:28trying to figure out just exactly who the manager is sending in to play.
- 1:22:43Count remains of three and two to Cardinal.
- 1:22:45The equestria stretches.
- 1:22:46Sato leads.
- 1:22:47He'll be going on the three, two, pitch.
- 1:22:48A throw over there, and Sato gets back in.
- 1:22:51Giants have Kingman at third, Spire at short, 20s at second, Goodson at first,
- 1:22:56Haley catching, DiCaprio doing the pitching.
- 1:22:58The outfield is Williams in left, Rosario in center, and Matthews in right.
- 1:23:03Stretch for the three, two, pitch to Cardinal.
- 1:23:07Swung on and missed, he struck in on.
- 1:23:11No runs on a hit, no errors on a runner left arm.
- 1:23:14At the end of five, the score tells a giant six and the Cubs two.
- 1:23:20Numerous changes, myriad changes for the Chicago Cubs,
- 1:23:24and to tell you about it, here's Bill Thomas.
- 1:23:26Bill North goes in to play center field, Paul Popovich at second base,
- 1:23:30Jim Tyrone in left field, Jim Hickman at first base,
- 1:23:34Carmen Fanzone at third base, Cleo James in right field,
- 1:23:38Hector Torres the shortstop,
- 1:23:40Ken Rudolph remains in the broad game to do the catching,
- 1:23:43and the new club pitcher is right hander, Phil Bacon.
- 1:23:49For the Giants, Gary Thomason will be a pinch batter.
- 1:23:54Thomason, left-handed batter.
- 1:24:00Thomason was Amarillo last year, about at 373 in 126 games.
- 1:24:09Swings and misses on the first pitch, strike one.
- 1:24:23Regan delivers a line drive, right field, it'll be a base hit.
- 1:24:26Coming over towards the line field is Cleo James.
- 1:24:29Thomason trying for second base, and he'll be in at second with a slide.
- 1:24:33Thomason, the young fellow, batting for the first time in a San Francisco Giants uniform,
- 1:24:36why, he says, a double in the right field.
- 1:24:39Beats Cleo James, throw, with a slide into second base.
- 1:24:44And Jim Rosario, center fielder, will be a batter.
- 1:24:49Jimmy batting for the first time in his broad game, switch batter,
- 1:24:51about at 224 for the Giants last year, in 93 games,
- 1:24:55played 13 games at Phoenix in the middle of the season.
- 1:24:58Thomason gets the double to open up against Regan.
- 1:25:03Regan, better than right-hander,
- 1:25:08wants a starting pitcher with Detroit, center to minors, got a trial with the Dodgers.
- 1:25:13This is high to Rosario for ball one.
- 1:25:17Came out of the minors with the Dodgers, won 18 games as a reliever one season.
- 1:25:26Rosario waits, Regan delivers, misses high ball two.
- 1:25:30Gary Thomason at second base, nobody out.
- 1:25:37Top of the sixth in the Giants lead 62.
- 1:25:43Regan looks at second, comes to the plate, gets the breaking pitch over.
- 1:25:48Two-and-one count.
- 1:25:51Regan often accused of dockering up the baseball.
- 1:26:01Thomason will lead at second.
- 1:26:02The two-and-one pitch to Rosario, grounded, base hit, right field.
- 1:26:05Around third is Thomason.
- 1:26:07Here comes James Stewart.
- 1:26:08Thomason falls down.
- 1:26:09He will get back to third, and on to second goes Rosario.
- 1:26:12Thomason coming around third base was waved home by Johnny McNamara, but tripped and fell.
- 1:26:17The throw came all the way to the plate.
- 1:26:20It's not cut off by the Cubs.
- 1:26:22Thomason was able to get back to third, and Rosario moves up to second.
- 1:26:26Give Jimmy a base hit.
- 1:26:27He takes second on the throw.
- 1:26:29Giants have runners at second and third with nobody out, and Tito for one-ease will be the batter.
- 1:26:34Tito, three for three, had a blue double in the first inning, single in the second,
- 1:26:38so he'll begin in the fourth.
- 1:26:40He's driven in around his quarter run.
- 1:26:44One-ease, which batter, batting left-handed.
- 1:26:51Regan, the work in the stretch, as the Cubs pull the infield in.
- 1:26:57Van Zon, Torres, Popovich, and Hickman all move in.
- 1:27:04Regan from the stretch delivers a slider for a strike on the outside corner.
- 1:27:10Thomason at third, Rosario at second, nobody out.
- 1:27:14Top of inning number six, Giants six, Cubs two.
- 1:27:23Regan sets it to the boat, comes to the plate, drive to center field.
- 1:27:27Going back, making a catch to center field, a one-run will score.
- 1:27:32Rosario heading for third to throw his cutoff, and Rosario is in at third.
- 1:27:36Bill North, the center fielder, had to move back on that drive hit by Tito Pouenis.
- 1:27:41He set 20 deep enough for Thomason to come in and score easily to make the Giants lead now seven to two.
- 1:27:46Rosario moved to third.
- 1:27:48Pouenis has his second RBI of the day, and he's still perfect in the day at three for three.
- 1:27:54Dave Kingman walked in quarter run in the first inning, struck out in the second, walked in the fourth.
- 1:28:04Again, Regan works in the stretch, and the Cubs keep the infield in as Regan misses outside, ball one.
- 1:28:09Right-hander against right-hander.
- 1:28:16Regan ready, was down the line, drive to right side, base hit.
- 1:28:21Ground ball passed the drawn-in infield, and looked like Kingman was trying to go that way, and he did.
- 1:28:26Dave punched the ball through that drawn-in infield to the right side.
- 1:28:30Rosario scores.
- 1:28:36Giants now lead at eight to two, Ned Goodson, science first baseman, what was that?
- 1:28:44Strikeout victim his first time.
- 1:28:46Willie McKelvey started the ball game, singled and lined out.
- 1:28:51Goodson left hander better, Ed a good smooth swing.
- 1:28:54Drive to deep left center field.
- 1:28:57He's trying on the run, the Cub outfield will not get this, as it goes all the way to the wall, the left center field corner.
- 1:29:02Kingman turning it on, coming around third.
- 1:29:04He will score standing up as Hector Throys the shortstop runs the ball back in.
- 1:29:12Jim Tyrone the left fielder, center fielder Bill North had no chance.
- 1:29:15That was a drive, high drive, but in the alley in left center, and all the way to the center.
- 1:29:21Kingman scores the third run of the inning, Goodson gets a double and an RBI.
- 1:29:35Right fielder Gary Matthews will be the Giants batter.
- 1:29:44Gary and Nathaniel Matthews, Goodson away from second, pitches low ball one.
- 1:29:58Matthews played at Amarillo last year, about at 279, had 15 home runs, 86 RBIs, right handed batter.
- 1:30:05Ed Goodson away from second, Regan looks there, comes to the plate, ground ball, deep shortstop, Torres has it, his throw is in time to get Matthews.
- 1:30:13Gary gets down the line very well, Torres just gets him by a step at first base.
- 1:30:20The next batter, number 20, Bernie Williams left fielder.
- 1:30:23Left fielder Bernie Williams moves in for the Giants.
- 1:30:26Williams divided the year with Phoenix and San Francisco, 73 games at Phoenix, battered 308, 35 games with the big club, battered 178.
- 1:30:38Goodson had to hold on at second base on Matthews ground ball out.
- 1:30:44Williams another guy with good speed, and another right handed batter.
- 1:30:49Regan to the plate, foul of the screen.
- 1:30:56Foul of the screen, it's Regan up on the count to Williams on one.
- 1:31:13Goodson at second, now with two outs, two runs in for the Giants, San Francisco in front, 82, two in the top of the sixth.
- 1:31:27Regan's pitch high inside, Williams has to bail out of there.
- 1:31:33A one-one count.
- 1:31:43Regan ready, Goodson away from second, a one-one pitch, breaking ball for a strike.
- 1:31:50Regan, the edge in the count, a ball and two strikes.
- 1:32:02Regan looking at second, now comes to the plate, misses outside with a slider, a two-two count.
- 1:32:20Two-two count, Joe Regan's pitch, looped on the left field line pretty deep coming over the left fielder on the run,
- 1:32:27making the catch Jim Tyrone, a good running catch by Tyrone on the left field line.
- 1:32:34Williams retired and so are the Giants, San Francisco comes up with two more runs.
- 1:32:41Three more runs.
- 1:32:45So I stand corrected on the score, three runs on four hits.
- 1:32:49No errors, one winner left on. At the end of five and a half, the Giants nine, make up skills.
- 1:32:58I'd like to take a minute to talk to you women in our audience about one of your favorite subjects, sales.
- 1:33:03Not just any kind of sales, but the kind that can really save you money.
- 1:33:07Have you ever gone by a store and seen a sign that said, sales, 30 percent off?
- 1:33:12Then you look at the things in the window and see the dress you expected to buy the following week.
- 1:33:16Only now it's on sale and the sale will be over next week? What do you do?
- 1:33:20Easy. You buy the dress this week instead of next.
- 1:33:25Only one of you are waiting until next week to buy the dress because you're short of cash this week.
- 1:33:29What then? Well, that's easy too.
- 1:33:32That's the time to whip out your trusty Bank AmeriCard.
- 1:33:35Because by using your Bank AmeriCard at a time like that, you can take advantage of the sale
- 1:33:40and pay less for something you would have paid more for later on.
- 1:33:44That's using your Bank AmeriCard and your head.
- 1:33:48Bank AmeriCard, think of it as money, money that can save you money.
- 1:34:00Changes for the Giants. New batteries. Skip the black pitching. Dave Rader doing the catching.
- 1:34:05Alan Gallagher goes in to play at third base. Chris Arnold is at second.
- 1:34:15Fit like the left hander has not been scheduled to pitch today by Manager Charlie Fox.
- 1:34:21Skip, something of a mystery to the Giants, says in 1970 Skip was 10-3 at Phoenix in mid-year,
- 1:34:27came up 1-5, lost 5 at the big club, and last year could never get it together.
- 1:34:31Phoenix had a disastrous season. Ground ball, base hit the left field by shortstop Hector Torres,
- 1:34:39leading off the bottom of the sixth for the Cubs.
- 1:34:41Torres grounds a solid single to left.
- 1:34:46The battle with the catcher Ken Rudolph.
- 1:34:49Fit like at Phoenix, lost 7, lost 11, had a turn around average of 6.40.
- 1:35:00Right end of batting catcher, Ken Rudolph standing in.
- 1:35:05Fit like looks at first, comes to the plate, and misses high with a fastball for ball one.
- 1:35:14Giants 9, Cubs 2.
- 1:35:16Giants with 3 in the first, 2 in the second, 1 in the fifth, and 3 in the sixth.
- 1:35:22Cubs will single runs in the third and fourth.
- 1:35:25Fit like's 1-0 pitch.
- 1:35:27Field, through Gallagher in the left field, going to second, holding on as Torres.
- 1:35:32Williams throws in towards third base.
- 1:35:34A solid shot.
- 1:35:36Gallagher made an attempt on the ball, a ball went right through him in the left field.
- 1:35:42Protect the official scoring, and it'll probably go to the base hit.
- 1:35:44It was hit like a shot.
- 1:35:48The next batter, number 27, Bill Riggins.
- 1:35:56It does go as a base hit for Rudolph.
- 1:35:59This is third of the ball game.
- 1:36:03And pitcher Phil Regan, well bat for himself.
- 1:36:10For the first two batters that they spit like, they hit the ball solidly.
- 1:36:17Both four base hits, left hander looks at second, delivers, Regan round the bunk, pops it up.
- 1:36:21Radar lost it, now comes over and cannot get to it as it drops untouched in foul territory.
- 1:36:28Regan has been at bat 320 times in the big leagues.
- 1:36:33Not exactly an overpowering hitter, has an 0-9-0 average.
- 1:36:37A sacrifice.
- 1:36:55Cleo James, the right fielder on deck.
- 1:36:58Pitlock ready, the runners lead from first and second.
- 1:37:01Round the bunk is Regan, the bunk system to the right side, a good bunk.
- 1:37:03Pitlock picks it up, throws to first, a good spin covering as both runners move up.
- 1:37:08Regan sacrifices successfully, moving Torres to third, Rudolph to second.
- 1:37:15Cleo James, the right fielder, will bat for his first time.
- 1:37:21James, with a Cubs and Tacoma last year, batted 368 in 71 games at Tacoma,
- 1:37:29287 in 54 games with the Cubs.
- 1:37:35James, right hander battered.
- 1:37:41On deck, the second baseman, Paul Popovich.
- 1:37:43Torres at third, Rudolph at second, one out.
- 1:37:48Bottom of the sixth and the Giants lead 9-2.
- 1:37:50Pitlock fires a curve a bit too low, ball one.
- 1:38:03One ball, no stag cat.
- 1:38:09Pitlock back to the play.
- 1:38:11Fastball popped up.
- 1:38:12Foul, Raider might have a play coming back towards the screen,
- 1:38:15all the way to the screen and it's back into the sixth.
- 1:38:29Giants with Gallagher at third, Spire still at short.
- 1:38:32Chris Arnold at second, Ed Goodson at first.
- 1:38:34Hatfield, Bernie Williams in left, Jim Rosario in center.
- 1:38:39Gary Matthews in right.
- 1:38:41Pitlock the pitcher, Raider the catcher.
- 1:38:43Pitlock the third pitcher for the Giants.
- 1:38:45John Corretto started with three innings.
- 1:38:46John DiAcosto went the next two.
- 1:38:49Now Pitlock coming on here in the sixth and John Cumberland throws
- 1:38:52into bullpen for San Francisco.
- 1:38:57Pitlock kicks, delivers 1-1.
- 1:38:59Big curve ball is way outside and high.
- 1:39:02Two ball, one stag cat.
- 1:39:15Pitlock checking later for a sign.
- 1:39:18A 2-1 pitch on its way.
- 1:39:20High and outside with a fastball, ball three.
- 1:39:29Pitlock behind on the count, three balls and one strike.
- 1:39:44Pitlock glances at third as Torres comes down the line.
- 1:39:46A 3-1 pitch, way outside and high ball for James Wachs.
- 1:39:56To load up the bases, second baseman Paul Popovich will bat for the first time in the game.
- 1:40:04Popovich, switch batter, will bat right-handed against the left-hander.
- 1:40:08Skip Pitlock.
- 1:40:09Popovich, last here with the Cubs.
- 1:40:12That is two-spot in Dane.
- 1:40:14Popovich plays all the infield spots and has been using the Cays in the outfield.
- 1:40:23Cubs with the bases loaded, one out, trailing the Giants 9-2 in the sixth.
- 1:40:27Ground ball sharply hit to Arnold.
- 1:40:29Bobbles, picks it up, throws to first, gets the one-runner.
- 1:40:32Popovich is a run and scores.
- 1:40:34The ball had double play possibilities.
- 1:40:37Handcuffed Arnold, bounced off his chest.
- 1:40:40Pick it up and maybe the only play you had left to play on Popovich at first is a run and scores.
- 1:40:45Popovich with the RBI.
- 1:40:47Rudolph goes to third.
- 1:40:50James up to second.
- 1:40:52And right-fitter Jim, or left-fitter, Jim Tyrone will be the batter.
- 1:40:57Tyrone with Quincy last year, that is 3-0-3.
- 1:41:01Sixty-one games, right-handed batter, takes a curve, high ball one.
- 1:41:05Understand Tyrone has good power.
- 1:41:09It's going to go over well with the young audience.
- 1:41:19Good luck, kicks, throws, fastball, swing on a mess, a one-one count.
- 1:41:24Jim Tyrone, right-handed batter.
- 1:41:32Tyrone, an All-American baseball player at Pan-American College in Texas.
- 1:41:41Good luck, curve, deep to center field.
- 1:41:43Rosario turns, goes back, still goes back, over his head and off the center field fence.
- 1:41:48Two runs score.
- 1:41:50Round second heading for third is Tyrone and he can run.
- 1:41:52Here comes the throw, it hits him, bounces away out along the left field arm and he will stay at third.
- 1:41:59Tyrone crashed one over the head of Jim Rosario.
- 1:42:02It took one bounce off the center field fence at the 430-foot mark.
- 1:42:06James and Rudolph score.
- 1:42:09Tyrone winds up with a triple and two RBI.
- 1:42:13Gets the ball a long ways.
- 1:42:16Great speed, he showed on the bases.
- 1:42:20Jim Hickman, veteran campaigner for the Cubs, now playing at first base in this ballgame.
- 1:42:25Replacing Joe Pepiton, right-handed batter.
- 1:42:27Good luck to the plate.
- 1:42:29Fastball, low ball one.
- 1:42:32Last year Hickman batted 256, 19 home runs, 60 RBI.
- 1:42:35The year before he had a great year, 32 home runs, 115 RBI, 315 average.
- 1:42:44Tyrone down the line at third.
- 1:42:46Fastball misses outside.
- 1:42:48Fidlock drops behind two balls, no strikes.
- 1:42:51Flores and Rudolph single, Regan sacrificed.
- 1:42:54James walked.
- 1:42:55Popovich got one run across on an infield out and Tyrone has tripled to drive in two.
- 1:43:00The Cubs with three across, the Giants lead now nine to five.
- 1:43:05Fidlock's pitch, called strike a fastball just in the strike zone up around the letters.
- 1:43:13Skipping on account of two and one.
- 1:43:20Two on pitch to the right-handed batter.
- 1:43:22Lettup popped up, right side of the infield.
- 1:43:24Arnold calling, drifting over behind first base on the outfield grass, makes the catch,
- 1:43:29Regan at his side.
- 1:43:30And the Sun gave Chris a bit of trouble.
- 1:43:32Four Chicago on his six, three runs on three hits.
- 1:43:37No Giants errors, one runner left on.
- 1:43:39The Giants nine and the Cubs five.

- 1:44:57And for any number seven, here again is why.
- 1:45:00Don't forget opening day at Candlestick Park.
- 1:45:03Thursday, April 6th, San Diego will be the ball club opening against the Giants.
- 1:45:08And then the first doubleheader of the season will be that Sunday, April 9th, also against San Diego.
- 1:45:14For tickets to opening day or the doubleheader or any other of the Giants home game,
- 1:45:19tickets are available by mail, $4.50 for box seats, $3.50 for reserved.
- 1:45:24You can write the Giants ticket off at Candlestick Park, San Francisco 9-4-1-2-4.
- 1:45:30That's San Francisco 9-4-1-2-4.
- 1:45:33I know you'll want to be out and see Candlestick Park.
- 1:45:36It has blossomed into a beauty, a new construction out there.
- 1:45:40And you'll want to come out and watch the Giants in action, a Western Division champion.
- 1:45:48Dave Rader will be the leadoff batter.
- 1:45:53Takes outside for a ball.
- 1:45:58Regan.
- 1:45:59Now Art Williams is going to take a look at the baseball.
- 1:46:03Home plate umpire is going to inspect the baseball and toss it back out to Regan.
- 1:46:09The Giants leading 9-5, out hitting the Cubs 11-9.
- 1:46:17Has Rader, a left-hand batter.
- 1:46:21Faces the right-hander, Phil Regan.
- 1:46:23Takes a strike.
- 1:46:28One-on-one count.
- 1:46:30David Martin Rader, he is 23 years old.
- 1:46:36Lives in Bakersfield.
- 1:46:37Takes a strike.
- 1:46:39For a ball and two strikes.
- 1:46:41Started his baseball in 1967 at Salt Lake.
- 1:46:44Resnaud in 67 and 68.
- 1:46:47Amorello 69-70 and Phoenix 71.
- 1:46:51Last year he appeared in three games with the Giants.
- 1:46:54Parents left foul ball back out of play and it's one and two.
- 1:47:00Rader then Spire.
- 1:47:03And the pitching's done.
- 1:47:07Hotfield straight away against his left-hand batter.
- 1:47:12He hit 314 for Phoenix last year.
- 1:47:14That's his biggest year with the bat outside of his first year with Salt Lake City when he hit 321.
- 1:47:22Swings and tops it up behind the plate.
- 1:47:25Rudolph waiting for this one and makes the catch for out number one.
- 1:47:29So Rader fouls out to the opposing catcher and we'll pause for state identification.
- 1:47:35This is the Burt West radio network.
- 1:47:38When you want to hear the sounds of the city, listen to the Jim Lang Show, 6 to 10, weekdays right here on KSFO in San Francisco.
- 1:47:46The sound of the city.
- 1:47:55Chris Spire hits a drive to left field.
- 1:47:57Back deep goes Jim Tyrone.
- 1:47:59The left fielder turns and makes the catch for the second out.
- 1:48:02Spire batting left-handed.
- 1:48:03Hits it all along the way to left field.
- 1:48:06Quite sure this year at Candlestick the left field has not been particularly home run haven for hitters.
- 1:48:12But I think this year at Candlestick with the stadium enclosed that the ball is going to be jumping out of there a great deal more.
- 1:48:20Steve Sanoveros is up here to bat for the pitcher Skip Pitlock, a left-hand batter.
- 1:48:25He takes up side for a ball.
- 1:48:26He was with Fresno last year at 321.
- 1:48:28Had 18 home runs and 92 RBI.
- 1:48:31He was being changed to an outfielder from third base.
- 1:48:34He played third base with Fresno last year.
- 1:48:36Swings and fouls it to the screen and it's a ball and a strike.
- 1:48:39Two down, bases empty.
- 1:48:41Regan was tagged for three runs in the sixth inning.
- 1:48:44He has retired the first two minutes faced in this seventh.
- 1:48:50Osfield gives Onoveros the right center field area.
- 1:48:54North the center fielder playing well over in left center.
- 1:48:57Cleo James guarding the right field line.
- 1:49:00In field backed up.
- 1:49:021-1 count to Onoveros.
- 1:49:04Left hand batter checks his swing, rolls a foul down the third baseline.
- 1:49:081 and 2.
- 1:49:13Next broadcast will be Saturday from Tucson, Arizona.
- 1:49:20Hopefully it will come from Tucson.
- 1:49:241-2 pitch.
- 1:49:26Foul away to the left and it stays at 1 and 2.
- 1:49:29It's an upset if you go into Tucson ballpark and you get broadcast lines.
- 1:49:36Last year we had to tie two cans together.
- 1:49:40Tin cans with a piece of string.
- 1:49:43Swing and a miss.
- 1:49:44Onoveros is out on the strike.
- 1:49:47No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 1:49:51And as we go to the bottom of the seventh inning,
- 1:49:56the score, the San Francisco Giants 9, the Chicago Cubs 5.
- 1:50:02Good working out.
- 1:50:05Is this an opening inning?
- 1:50:07All right, it's an opening inning.
- 1:50:08Let me tell you about some of the special events coming up.
- 1:50:11Opening day of course is April 6th against San Diego.
- 1:50:14We've mentioned that.
- 1:50:15The first double header is Sunday, April 9th.
- 1:50:17New kids bat day is Sunday, April 23rd.
- 1:50:21I guess there aren't many kids listening right now.
- 1:50:23They should be in school if you're not in school.
- 1:50:26And I'm going to let you come to bat day.
- 1:50:28Bat day, Sunday, April 23rd.
- 1:50:30That's against Houston.
- 1:50:33There are tickets available for those games.
- 1:50:34Now last year, if you'll recall on bat day, they had a turn away crowd.
- 1:50:39So it would be wise to get your tickets in advance for that April 23rd date.
- 1:50:45You can order by mail just right to the Giants ticket office,
- 1:50:48Candlestick Park, San Francisco 9, 4124.
- 1:50:51Box seats are 4 1 half, reserved seats 3 1 half.
- 1:50:54When bat day all, kids 14 and under, receive a free autographed baseball bat
- 1:50:58when they enter the ballpark.
- 1:51:01So remember the date, Sunday, April 23rd.
- 1:51:04Get your tickets ahead of time so you'll be assured of a seat.
- 1:51:14John Cumberland comes in to do the pitching as Pitlock went one inning.
- 1:51:17He could have been out of it without being scored upon.
- 1:51:19A potential double play ball was missed and a hard shot went through Gallagher,
- 1:51:23because that's not an indictment of Gallagher because it was hit like a bullet.
- 1:51:29Carmen Fanzona is the first batter, swings it, hits a line drive off the glove.
- 1:51:32It will fill up the shortstop and Fanzona will be saved at first.
- 1:51:35Phillips took his eye off that ball.
- 1:51:37It was a line drive, hit through the hole.
- 1:51:39He got over there, added glove on the ball, but it popped out of the glove.
- 1:51:43Fanzona is safe on that first base.
- 1:51:45Then air charge to Phillips, the shortstop.
- 1:51:50Michael Dwyer Phillips, who is 21 years old, is from Beaumont, Texas,
- 1:51:57or born in Beaumont, Texas.
- 1:51:59He lives in Irving, Texas.
- 1:52:01Irving, with Amarillo last year at 233.
- 1:52:05Bill North, center fielder, up here right-hand batter now with a runner at first, nobody else.
- 1:52:10The Giants lead 9-5. We're in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:52:15John Cumberland, left-hander doing the pitching for the Giants.
- 1:52:20Cumberland, one of the reasons the Giants got up to such a fabulous early start last year.
- 1:52:23He fits very well.
- 1:52:26Delivers high for a ball two, and North turns the look south at the third base coach.
- 1:52:39Fanzona first. The pitch is outside.
- 1:52:43Ball three, Cumberland behind, 3-0.
- 1:52:52Giants 9, the Cubs 5.
- 1:52:57Cumberland 3-0 offering on the way, taken for a strike and a 3-1.
- 1:53:04One count. Upfield, around to the left, infield, backed up.
- 1:53:11Hoping for a ground ball to get two outs with one swing of the bat. 3-1 pitch.
- 1:53:17Bounded to shortstop, could be two. Phillips backed up, throws a second for one.
- 1:53:20Arnold threw the first, is not in time.
- 1:53:23Phillips had to back up on that ball, and that was just enough to erase the double play as North beats it out.
- 1:53:29The Giants, three forces, Fanzona second base for a top of the one.
- 1:53:34Hector Torres, who had a single in his one trip, will be the batter.
- 1:53:37Today's game being brought to you by Chevrolet's 1972 cars, Ham's Beer and Long's Drug Stores, and Rich Smalley's Pipe Tobacco.
- 1:53:50Hector Torres, right-hand batting shortstop, takes a curve in the dirt, bounds away, Raider scrambles after it, and North
- 1:53:58remains at first base.
- 1:54:08Rich has ground up old Chronicles and put them in his pipe, and that's what he's smoking today.
- 1:54:16You can smell Glendeckey Clare over here.
- 1:54:19Hector Torres, wakes, swings, and fouls it away.
- 1:54:32Out of a ball and a strike to Torres, it was one down and one on.
- 1:54:38That hander starts throwing on the bullpen for the Chicagos.
- 1:54:41Cumberland, the fourth Giant pitcher, Carothers, De Acresto, Pitlock, and now Cumberland.
- 1:54:51Torres chokes up on the bat about three or four inches.
- 1:54:53North leads from first to drive by Gallagher into short left field.
- 1:54:56Phillips chasing it down, North rounds second and holds on as Bernie Williams comes into field of all.
- 1:55:02Gallagher is probably wondering why me.
- 1:55:05Kingman stood out there for five innings and nothing was hit in that direction.
- 1:55:09Gallagher has been there two innings and he's had two shots and had to be wearing a bulletproof vest.
- 1:55:20Ken Rudolph, now that was Torres' second hit.
- 1:55:26It moved North to second base and with one down the Cubs have a threat at the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:55:32Giants leading nine to five.
- 1:55:36There goes the runner going North to throw to third and he is safe at third base.
- 1:55:41Rader made a perfect throw but North had a big jump on Cumberland and as North moved into third,
- 1:55:49Hector Torres stole second with a double steal.
- 1:55:54And the Cubs have runners at second and third with one out.
- 1:56:04Rudolph who has three hits and three trips, a right hand batter against Cumberland.
- 1:56:08The Giants still play the infield back and the outfield deep.
- 1:56:12Cumberland lines for the 1-0 pitch.
- 1:56:15Ball two, 2-0.
- 1:56:25North at third, Torres at second, one down, a 2-0 count to the right hand batting catcher, Ken Rudolph.
- 1:56:38Wind up by Cumberland with a 2-0 pitch.
- 1:56:41Low ball three.
- 1:56:42He's in danger of loading him up.
- 1:56:483-0 count.
- 1:56:58Cumberland 3-0 pitch to Rudolph.
- 1:57:00Takes five, all four, and they are loaded up.
- 1:57:03Cumberland walks his first man.
- 1:57:07The base is filled and we'll have a pitch back and now Breeden will come up to bat for the pitchers.
- 1:57:17Breeden batting in this seventh inning will bat for Regan.
- 1:57:23Base is loaded, one out.
- 1:57:26North at third, Torres at second.
- 1:57:29Rudolph at first.
- 1:57:33And a big right hand batter, Hal Breeden, and I mean he's a figment.
- 1:57:39Eleven feet, six inches tall.
- 1:57:42Takes low for a ball.
- 1:57:44Six-two, 195 pounds, he looks bigger than that.
- 1:57:52Ball one.
- 1:57:53Bases are filled with Chicago and Breeden to see what he can do about getting them home.
- 1:58:031-0 count to him, Cumberland in difficulty, the 1-0 pitch.
- 1:58:06Curve ball dribbles to first base.
- 1:58:07That's going to be a tricky chance.
- 1:58:09Cumberland didn't cover first and faith that first base is Breeden.
- 1:58:14That ball dribbled off the end of the bat.
- 1:58:16Goodson fielded it.
- 1:58:18Had a long run to first.
- 1:58:19For some reason, Cumberland did not go over to cover first base.
- 1:58:23And it costs him.
- 1:58:24A run comes in to score.
- 1:58:25It will be a base hit for Breeden on a little dribbler off the end of the bat.
- 1:58:31The bases remain loaded.
- 1:58:34In clear, the genes will be the batter.
- 1:58:36So it's a nine to six ball game.
- 1:58:38The Bows north scores.
- 1:58:40Torres went to third.
- 1:58:41Rudolph to second.
- 1:58:42And Breeden is saved at first.
- 1:58:44On the bottom of the seventh, the Giants lead, cut to nine to six.
- 1:58:47The bases are loaded, one out.
- 1:58:48James has balked and scored a run in his only appearance.
- 1:58:54Cumberland winds and his pitch.
- 1:58:56Curve ball, pop foul.
- 1:58:58Out of play.
- 1:59:01Cumberland throws himself toward third base side when he pitches.
- 1:59:05Makes it difficult for him to get over to first base or to cover on the right side.
- 1:59:09He just plain didn't move over there that time and it cost him an out.
- 1:59:13Those are things that can take a baseball game away from you.
- 1:59:20Cumberland winds up the pitch high for a ball.
- 1:59:24One and one.
- 1:59:28If the base is loaded and you get somebody out, you want to get them out.
- 1:59:32That time Cumberland let Breeden get off the hooks.
- 1:59:38A one-one pitch.
- 1:59:39Strike two calls.
- 1:59:40Good pass ball on the outside.
- 1:59:42It's one and two.
- 1:59:44Ball and two strikes.
- 1:59:46That's the count for Cleo James.
- 1:59:48A run in, the bases loaded.
- 1:59:49The Giants lead nine to six.
- 1:59:51The Cubs threaten.
- 1:59:53In field, double play position.
- 1:59:55The outfield backed up.
- 1:59:58Right hand batting James facing John Cumberland.
- 2:00:01He's away from third, Rudolph from second, Breeden from first.
- 2:00:05Low for a ball that's two and two.
- 2:00:08Close pitch.
- 2:00:09James didn't go for it.
- 2:00:13James is the sixth man to bat the inning.
- 2:00:19Cubs scored three times in the sixth inning.
- 2:00:21They've scored once and continue to threaten here in the seventh.
- 2:00:25Way high with a curve ball attempt.
- 2:00:30And now three and two.
- 2:00:33Cumberland has gone as far as he can with James.
- 2:00:41Three-two count for the right-hand batter.
- 2:00:44Cumberland winds with a three-two pitch.
- 2:00:47Dribble to first base.
- 2:00:49Goodson steps on first, throws to the plate too late.
- 2:00:53To get the runner coming in, he retired James at first base.
- 2:00:59The runner that's coming in to score was Torres.
- 2:01:01Goodson had a choice to make there, whether to come to the plate or run over and step first.
- 2:01:07He decided to go to first base, get the sure run and then throw to the plate.
- 2:01:11But by that time it was too late to get Torres.
- 2:01:14The ball was not a double play ball because it was hit too slowly off the end of the bat.
- 2:01:18Runners at second and third.
- 2:01:20Now Breeden moved up to second.
- 2:01:23And Rudolph went to third.
- 2:01:25The batter is Paul Popovich, right-hand batter.
- 2:01:28He's in third place, and they switch batters.
- 2:01:30Takes way high outside.
- 2:01:32Cumberland almost threw that one away.
- 2:01:33It's going nine to seven.
- 2:01:39Two down.
- 2:01:40Runners at second and third.
- 2:01:41Popovich to seventh.
- 2:01:42Now we're going to have a pinch runner.
- 2:01:46Gene Heiser going in to run at second base for Rudolph.
- 2:01:59Or for Breeden rather.
- 2:02:00Heiser running for Breeden at second base.
- 2:02:04Heiser takes over for Breeden at second.
- 2:02:06Rudolph remains at third base.
- 2:02:09And Popovich swings and pops the foul out of play.
- 2:02:13It's one-on-one.
- 2:02:14Cumberland throwing that fastball that tails away from the right-hand batters.
- 2:02:17He's had two of them in succession dribble it off the end of the bat to first base.
- 2:02:23One was close to the bag so Goodson could make the play.
- 2:02:27The other one was off the bag and Cumberland failed to cover first.
- 2:02:30And Goodson could not get over there in time with the ball after he fielded it.
- 2:02:35Cumberland should be on the bench right now had he fielded his position.
- 2:02:38One-one pitch is low for ball two.
- 2:02:40Two and one.
- 2:02:41John's having a struggle out there with his control.
- 2:02:44He's throwing some over the plate and some under the plate.
- 2:02:51That's what spring training is all about.
- 2:02:54He gets himself ready for the regular season.
- 2:02:56That regular season, April 6th against San Diego, that's the opener of Thursday.
- 2:03:01Strike calls and fastball two and two.
- 2:03:05Now it goes to two and two to Paul Popovich playing second base.
- 2:03:09That's over for Glenn Becker.
- 2:03:11Nine to six the Giants lead.
- 2:03:13Nine to seven the Giants lead.
- 2:03:14Two runs in for the Cubs in this inning.
- 2:03:18It's to Popovich.
- 2:03:19Swung on and missed.
- 2:03:20He's fucking out.
- 2:03:25Here in the seventh, two runs on two hits.
- 2:03:30No errors.
- 2:03:31One error and two runners left on.
- 2:03:35Two runs, two hits, one error, two runners left on.
- 2:03:37Nine to seven is the Giants nine and the Cubs seven.

- 2:04:43Inning number eight, a new pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, Roberto Rodriguez.
- 2:04:48And to tell you about it, there's Bill Thompson.
- 2:04:52Rodriguez, the right hander, 6,385 pounds, a non-roster player with the Cubs,
- 2:04:57was with Tacoma last year, a good one in the last record of 15 and 8,
- 2:05:02an earned run average of 4.01.
- 2:05:09Rodriguez will face the tap at a giant batting order.
- 2:05:12Center fielder Jim Rosario, second baseman Chris Arnold,
- 2:05:16third baseman Alan Gallagher, dude batting the third spot.
- 2:05:29Rosario, a base hit, scored a run in the sixth inning.
- 2:05:39Jimmy, 511, 175, takes low outside ball one.
- 2:05:44Born in Puerto Rico, was raised in New York City.
- 2:05:52Switch batter batting left-handed against Roberto Rodriguez, misses outside for ball two.
- 2:06:00Rodriguez short arms the ball, delivers something in the manner of an infielder throwing,
- 2:06:07at least he does on his first two pitches.
- 2:06:10Two at a delivery, the slider for a strike, two-and-one count.
- 2:06:26Two on pitch to Jim, bounded foul, pass first.
- 2:06:31Rodriguez, Rosario, even at two-and-two.
- 2:06:38In number eight, the Giants in front, nine to seven.
- 2:06:46Rodriguez, fourth pitcher for the Cubs, Jenkins, Pappas, Regan, preceding him.
- 2:06:53Two-two pitch to Rosario, swung out and missed, foul tipped into Rudolph's glove.
- 2:07:00Rodriguez strikes out the first man he faces.
- 2:07:03Rosario, an off-speed hit. Chris Arnold will bat for his first time at the Giants.
- 2:07:10Chris played 120 games at Phoenix last year.
- 2:07:13Outstanding year at the play, batted 343, gotten six games with the Giants at the end of the year,
- 2:07:18batted 231, had a home run, played in the air against the Braves in Atlanta.
- 2:07:26One strike, that's Arnold. One out, the base is empty.
- 2:07:35You know one pitch, swung out and missed, strike two.
- 2:07:38A breaking pitch by Roberto Rodriguez.
- 2:07:51Rodriguez, the time from Rudolph with the two pitch, that side ball won.
- 2:07:59Arnold is mentioning Gallagher saying why me at third base.
- 2:08:02Rudolph has caught the entire ball game, which is very unusual for an opening game of Spring-Jang.
- 2:08:07In the temps are in the nineties.
- 2:08:10Foul tipped, Rudolph is winged by him.
- 2:08:16He's hitting around behind home plate.
- 2:08:24A ball and two strikes on Chris Arnold.
- 2:08:40A one and two count.
- 2:08:42The right-hander batting Chris Arnold.
- 2:08:44Rodriguez back to the plate.
- 2:08:46Pop-up on the left field line coming in is Jim Tyrone waiting and makes the catch for out number two.
- 2:08:55With two outs and the bases empty, Alan Gallagher will bat for his first time.
- 2:09:00Gallagher, 136 games with the Giants last year, batted 277, had a five home run, 57 RBI.
- 2:09:12Right-hander batter against the right-hander, Roberto Rodriguez delivers.
- 2:09:16A breaking pitch that's popped up down along the right field line.
- 2:09:18We have James coming over into foul territory down towards the corner and makes the catch.
- 2:09:23As he came across the line and had to drift towards the outfield fence.
- 2:09:27The Giants go one, two, three against the youngster, Roberto Rodriguez.
- 2:09:33No runs, no hits, no errors, no runners left.
- 2:09:35At the end of seven and a half, the Giants nine and the Cubs seven.
- 2:09:40There are people who used to scoff at the idea of an American-made small car designed in Detroit
- 2:09:45and built in the USA to compete with the highly successful imports.
- 2:09:50Detroit simply cannot provide a proper little car at a proper little price, and that's that, they'd say.
- 2:09:56And some still say it.
- 2:09:58But their numbers have dwindled considerably since the debut and ultimate success of cars like Chevrolet's Vega.
- 2:10:05Not only has Vega proven itself a highly respectable economy car in anybody's league,
- 2:10:10it's also winning friends for its handling, performance, looks, comfort, and ride.
- 2:10:17Vega, the little car that does everything well.
- 2:10:20So well, in fact, that in 1971, its first full year on the market,
- 2:10:25Vega emerged as the most popular little car made in America.
- 2:10:30Chevrolet building a better way to see the USA.
- 2:10:36The first batter for the Cubs is number 34, Jim Tyrone.
- 2:10:41Against John Cumberland in the bottom of the eighth,
- 2:10:44Cubs will lead it off with left-hitter Jim Tyrone, who tripled in the sixth.
- 2:10:49I need to drive in a pair of runs, right-handed batter.
- 2:10:56Come under the plate, lead up is butted and it's foul, pop up back towards the screen,
- 2:11:00a little low pop, no chance for Raider to make a play.
- 2:11:11Both clubs have not completely changed lineups with the exception of Rudolph,
- 2:11:15the Cubs catcher has gone all the way.
- 2:11:17Attendance, the Scots still today, 4396, which is somewhat over capacity.
- 2:11:27Cumberland's 0-1 fetch, breaking ball inside at the ankles, a 1-1 count.
- 2:11:39First baseman Jim Hickman waiting in the on-deck circle, Cumberland delivers.
- 2:11:43Pop-up along the first baseline coming over Goodson towards the mound
- 2:11:47and makes the catch for out number one.
- 2:11:51Tyrone retired on pop-up, the Giants first baseman Ed Goodson and Jim Hickman,
- 2:11:57who popped a second and he numbers six.
- 2:12:04His first play to Prince, we'll move in.
- 2:12:07Hickman right-handed batter against left-hander Johnny Cumberland.
- 2:12:12Prince moves the defense around to the left playing Hickman as a pull-hitter.
- 2:12:19Cumberland kicks and throws, fast ball is a good strike in the outside corner.
- 2:12:30Cumberland with a sign from Dave Raider, breaking pitch just misses inside,
- 2:12:37one strike.
- 2:12:481-1 pitch on its way, screwball, missed low and outside for ball two.
- 2:12:57Cumberland drops behind on Hickman, two balls and one strike.
- 2:13:00One out base is empty, bottom of the eighth, Giants lead nine to seven.
- 2:13:082-1 pitch, grounded sharply to Gallagher at third,
- 2:13:11who has it on a second hop, his throw, and plenty of time to get Hickman.
- 2:13:14That's the third solid shot that's been hit at Gallagher since he came out of the ballgame.
- 2:13:18Now batting number 23, Carmen Fanzone, third base.
- 2:13:22Third baseman Carmen Fanzone.
- 2:13:25Fanzone safe on an error, as one previous plate appearance.
- 2:13:35Right-handed batter.
- 2:13:40Cumberland misses, high and away, ball one.
- 2:13:54Breaking pitch is a strike, a 1-1 count.
- 2:14:11Cumberland delivers, breaking pitch, a deep to left field.
- 2:14:14This one has a chance.
- 2:14:15If it's fair, it is fair, it's gone.
- 2:14:21Carmen Fanzone.
- 2:14:29Fanzone hit a home run in his first time at bat in the national league,
- 2:14:36hit it off of Steve Blatt.
- 2:14:38The Pirates hit the first home run of their spring training,
- 2:14:41and he hit a long drive to the left field fence.
- 2:14:46The defense lead is now 9-8.
- 2:14:51Bill North, center fielder, right-handed batter,
- 2:14:54bounce left the middle, through, base hit, center field.
- 2:14:57Into field, Rosario, North, solid ground ball, up the middle.
- 2:15:02Pass, Chris Arnold, on in the center field.
- 2:15:04Number 21, Hector Torres, shortstop.
- 2:15:07Hector Torres, shortstop, who is two for two since coming into the ballgame,
- 2:15:11is a straight-up batter.
- 2:15:25Sort of first by Cumberland, and North gets back in.
- 2:15:36Goodson holding against North at first base.
- 2:15:40Torres choking up on a bat, takes high outside, ball one.
- 2:15:53North getting a lead, held there by Ed Goodson.
- 2:15:57Cumberland watches as Brenner goes, pitches, grounded to left field, base hit.
- 2:16:01On his way to third, now holding up and going back to second is North.
- 2:16:04So Brenner hustles in, comes up with a ball and gets it back into the infield.
- 2:16:10Torres is now three for three.
- 2:16:13Now coming to bat for the Cubs, number 15, Ken Rudolph.
- 2:16:18Hector Ken Rudolph will be the batter.
- 2:16:19We'll pause for a space identification.

- 2:16:45Perfect day.
- 2:16:48Cumberland misses, low, ball one.
- 2:16:50North at second, Torres at first, a run in, two outs.
- 2:16:53We're in the eighth and the Giants lead the Cubs, nine to eight.
- 2:17:06North and Torres lead.
- 2:17:07Cumberland flances at second, comes to the plate with a fast ball.
- 2:17:10It's a strike.
- 2:17:11That's high in the strike zone.
- 2:17:16A one-one count on Rudolph.
- 2:17:24Picture Roberto Rodriguez in the on-deck circle.
- 2:17:31Cumberland takes a second look at second base.
- 2:17:33Change up is swung on in this.
- 2:17:37Cumberland gets in front on account of ball and two strikes.
- 2:17:51Frank Fernandez now comes out in the on-deck circle, taking Rodriguez's place there.
- 2:17:57A one-two pitch.
- 2:17:59Bounded slowly towards Stewart Gallagher in front of Phillips,
- 2:18:01as it goes to second in time for the fours.
- 2:18:06Rudolph forcing Torres, Gallagher to the second baseman, Chris Arnold,
- 2:18:12for the final out.
- 2:18:13For the Cubs in the eighth, a run on three hits.
- 2:18:15No Giants, two runners left.
- 2:18:17The end of eighth, full.
- 2:18:19The Giants nine and the Cubs eight.

- 2:19:27The ninth inning of a thriller.
- 2:19:30Nine to eight.
- 2:19:33The Giants lead the Cubs as each manager has sprinkled the field with substitutions in the Cubs.
- 2:19:42Number two ball club has come up with six runs in the last three innings
- 2:19:48to narrow the gap to nine to eight.
- 2:19:52Now the Giants with a single run lead send up Ed Goodson,
- 2:19:58then Gary Matthews, and Bernie Williams against Roberto Rodriguez,
- 2:20:04the right-hander delivers the left-hand batting Goodson,
- 2:20:06who checks his swing and takes his strikes.
- 2:20:08Goodson has struck out and doubled, driven in a run.
- 2:20:14Playing first base.
- 2:20:15Giants had three runs in the first and two in the second.
- 2:20:19You have one in the clip.
- 2:20:21Pop ball out of play, I believe.
- 2:20:23It's over close, Dan.
- 2:20:24No, Panzone is there and makes the cap.
- 2:20:27Pop ball over near the stands and it came back, turned over,
- 2:20:30and Panzone, the third baseman, made the catch about, oh, ten feet probably inside the playing area
- 2:20:37for the first out.
- 2:20:38Now Gary Matthews.
- 2:20:44Giants have had nine consecutive batters retired.
- 2:20:54As Matthews waits, he's 0 for 1, swings and misses, strike one.
- 2:21:01We're in the top of the ninth inning, nine to eight.
- 2:21:04Giants being out hit by the Cubs, 14 to 11.
- 2:21:08Saturn curve, drilled to third.
- 2:21:10Panzone almost falls down but comes up with it, throws to first, and gets Matthews.
- 2:21:14That was a hot shot and Panzone going to his left,
- 2:21:17but it staggered as though he had taken a short left hook on the chin.
- 2:21:21But he managed to keep his balance, gets the throw over to first base for the second out,
- 2:21:25and now Bernie Williams.
- 2:21:38Rodriguez looking in for the sign for the first pitch to the right end batting Williams.
- 2:21:42Swing and a miss, strike one.
- 2:21:46Nothing in one that counts.
- 2:21:50Giants leading by a run, nine to eight in the top of the ninth.
- 2:21:54On the air again, Saturday from Tucson at 1140 San Francisco time.
- 2:22:01The Giants and the Indians pitch is low for a ball.
- 2:22:09Count one and one.
- 2:22:14It's also broadcast Sunday and that game from Phoenix will be televised on Channel 2.
- 2:22:24One-one pitch.
- 2:22:26Check swing and a roller down the first base side foul.
- 2:22:29Williams falling away from that pitch.
- 2:22:31It hit his bat, trickled down the first base side, but it was foul,
- 2:22:34and it's a one-ball-two strike count.
- 2:22:36Top of the ninth inning, the Giants in front nine to eight.
- 2:22:47Rodriguez is the fourth cup pitcher.
- 2:22:52Jenkins, Pappas, Rigan, and Rodriguez.
- 2:22:55Check swing and a roller to shortstop.
- 2:22:57Long throw by Torres is not in time.
- 2:23:01Bernie Williams beats it up.
- 2:23:04Long went over to try to field that ball in front of the shortstop.
- 2:23:07Couldn't get to it.
- 2:23:08Torres made the play a deep short and a flip throw to first was not.
- 2:23:11Not in time to get Williams.
- 2:23:14Dave Rader will be the batter now.
- 2:23:16The Giants get their twelfth hit after two rounds.
- 2:23:19End of the ninth inning.
- 2:23:22Rader has been up once and fouled out.
- 2:23:25Left hand batter.
- 2:23:27Looks at third base coach Johnny McNamara.
- 2:23:29Joey Amalfadano is coaching at first.
- 2:23:37Did the Giants continue on to win this one?
- 2:23:39Ferguson Jenkins would be the losing pitcher, and Carruthers would be the winner.
- 2:23:44They were the starters.
- 2:23:46Jenkins went two innings, gave up five runs to the Giants.
- 2:23:49Carruthers went three innings, gave up one run to the Cubs.
- 2:23:53Throw to first base and Williams gets back in.
- 2:23:56Burnie with an infield hit after two were down, and that broke a string of ten consecutive batters, retired by Cubs pitchers.
- 2:24:06Williams had his lead at first.
- 2:24:08Rodriguez throws over there quickly and Burnie gets back again.
- 2:24:18Two out.
- 2:24:19Williams at first base.
- 2:24:20Top of the ninth.
- 2:24:23Rodriguez pits.
- 2:24:24A fastball strike.
- 2:24:26So a month.
- 2:24:28Don Carruthers will be a guest on the postgame show.
- 2:24:38The expurgated.
- 2:24:39Furson.
- 2:24:46Williams away from first.
- 2:24:49Throw to first base. He gets back.
- 2:25:02Pit outside for a ball.
- 2:25:04Raider has a one-on-one count.
- 2:25:07Opening day at Candlestick Park is April 6th.

- 2:25:34Doubleheader with the Padres on Sunday, April 9th, and bat day is Sunday, April 23rd against Houston.
- 2:25:40Raider takes outside for a ball and it's two and one.
- 2:25:48Candlestick Park, wearing a brand new uniform this year.
- 2:25:52They've really done a remarkable job in there.
- 2:26:02Looking first, the 2-1 pit.
- 2:26:04Lowell for ball three.
- 2:26:06Rodriguez behind on Raider.
- 2:26:07Mike Phillips is due up next.
- 2:26:10Young shortstop.
- 2:26:13He will bat if Raider keeps things going here with two down on the ninth.
- 2:26:20Nine to eight, San Francisco in front of the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:26:31Stretched by Rodriguez.
- 2:26:33Swung on, line drive into left center field, going over the left fielder and dropped the ball.
- 2:26:38Does Tyrone.
- 2:26:39Williams is around third.
- 2:26:40He's heading for the plate.
- 2:26:41The throw comes into the middle of the infield and Williams has scored.
- 2:26:45At second is Raider.
- 2:26:46That was a low line shot into left center field.
- 2:26:48Tyrone with good speed got there, but the ball kicked off the heel of his glove.
- 2:26:54Drop to the ground and Williams, flying from first base, comes in to score.
- 2:27:00And we'll see how that is scored, a double or an air.
- 2:27:07The Giants now lead it by a score of ten to eight.
- 2:27:10And Mike Phillips is the batter with Raider over at second base.
- 2:27:15It's a two-base double.
- 2:27:22Raider at second base as Phillips grabs the first pitch, two second base.
- 2:27:26Up with Popovich, he's throw to first and the side is retired, but the Giants get a run on two hits.
- 2:27:31No error, then a runner left on.
- 2:27:35And as we go to the bottom of the ninth, the score, the Giants ten and the Cubs eight.
- 2:27:42It seems that the more you get to know about baseball, the more you enjoy it.
- 2:27:46And one of the most important things to know is how great a cold hands goes with ball games.
- 2:27:51Anywhere, anytime.
- 2:27:52Like right now, for example, while you're listening to this game with the rest of the Brotherhood,
- 2:27:56unlike most beers today, Ham's Tap and Regular is brewed natural, nothing artificial about it.
- 2:28:01So Ham's has a natural drinkability that's been keeping big beer drinkers happy for over a hundred years.
- 2:28:06Let's drink to that, shall we?
- 2:28:08Now there's a big beer, Brotherhood.
- 2:28:10Men who like lots of beer, join the Brotherhood of Ham.
- 2:28:15Join the big beer, Brotherhood.
- 2:28:18And see, there's always room, and you're in the place to be.
- 2:28:20energy, and the day, it takes a town of big beers.
- 2:28:30Brotherhood, the big beer's taking Brotherhood, the big beer's taking Brotherhood of Ham.
- 2:28:37Now heading for the pitcher, number 47, Frank Fernandez.
- 2:28:47Frank Fernandez will come up to hit for the pitcher, Rodriguez.
- 2:28:56Fernandez, the right-hand batter.
- 2:29:03As Cumberland looks in for the sign for the pitch to Fernandez,
- 2:29:09John delivers, swung on, grounded down the third baseline, it was off his foot.
- 2:29:13Foul ball, strike one count.
- 2:29:15Ball was in fair territory, but it hit the batter on the foot when he fouled it at the plate, and it's a strike one count.
- 2:29:21Cumberland has a two-run lead, ten to eight.
- 2:29:26The Giants trying for the sixth consecutive time to beat the Chicago Cubs in the spring opener.
- 2:29:37Cumberland into the windup for the pitch.
- 2:29:39High for a ball, it's one-on-one.
- 2:29:43Ball on the strike, John Cumberland, who last year was in the Giants starting rotation.
- 2:29:51His difficulties out here this afternoon, pitch a strike call, that one's just in the strike zone.
- 2:29:57It's a ball and two strikes.
- 2:30:02Might have been a strike if he'd had Fay Wray in his arms, but it looked to be a little bit high.
- 2:30:11One-two pitch, outside for a ball, and it's two and two.
- 2:30:18Hotfield playing back deep against Fernandez, batting for the pitcher, top of the order.
- 2:30:22Then Cleo James and Paul Popovich.
- 2:30:27Two-two pitch, lead up is just a bit low, and it's three and two.
- 2:30:33He'd give him a screwball that time, and it was just below the knee, so it's a full count of three and two.
- 2:30:41Cumberland not wanting to walk anybody, certainly not the leadoff man in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:30:48But he is as far as he can go down, three and two is three-two pitch, swung on, cracked foul to the left,
- 2:30:53past third base coach Pete Reeser.
- 2:30:57Dimensions here in Scottsdale, 360 down the line, 375 to left and right, 417 to left and right center,
- 2:31:05and 430 to straightaway center field.
- 2:31:07Ball park, three-two pitch, ball four, he walked in.
- 2:31:13Cumberland walks the leadoff man, and Cleo James will be the latter.
- 2:31:22Raider goes out to talk to Cumberland.
- 2:31:27James has walked and grounded out in his two trips.
- 2:31:37Right-hand batter against the left-hand pitching of John Cumberland.
- 2:31:46Giants hopefully looking for a double-playground ball in this spot.
- 2:31:53Cumberland stretches for the first pitch, a strike called 0-1-1.
- 2:32:02Cubs have scored in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth inning.
- 2:32:07Have a runner on here with nobody out.
- 2:32:09The bottom of the ninth, the Giants are in front by two, 10-8.
- 2:32:13Line drive foul, look out, ooh, that one skipped over the low fence in right field and shot into the stand.
- 2:32:21There aren't many empty places where that ball can land.
- 2:32:29Got his 0-2 to James.
- 2:32:40Stretched by Cumberland and the 0-2 pitch, low and inside for a ball, one and two.
- 2:32:52Giants play the Oakwood A's tomorrow at Mesa.
- 2:33:00One-two pitch, top foul out of play.
- 2:33:04Stays at a ball and two strikes.
- 2:33:09Herman Franks, ex-manager of the Giants in town, his vacation and watch baseball.
- 2:33:17Bob Hossam, the general manager of the Cincinnati Reds also here.
- 2:33:20John Holland, of course, for the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:33:27Pitch fouled away, out of play to the right.
- 2:33:34Herman now to travel has one of those big trucks with everything in it.
- 2:33:39He has everything but the Count Basie band.
- 2:33:43Actually does have a small combo for dancing late in the evening.
- 2:33:47That's really some traveling outfit that he has.
- 2:33:52Pitches up high for a ball.
- 2:33:56It's known as a recreational vehicle.
- 2:34:00You have to pull off the side of the road for that, don't you?
- 2:34:06Two and two count.
- 2:34:09Runner at first, take two pitch.
- 2:34:12Swung on one hopper to third base.
- 2:34:14Gallagher throws the second for one.
- 2:34:16Arnold's throw to first is low, but dug out by Goodson on a good backhand catch by Goodson of that ball in the dirt.
- 2:34:22And it's a double play.
- 2:34:25The Giants get the double play to erase two men.
- 2:34:34Paul Popovich, who is 0 for 2, Cumberland one out away from recording the Giants' first win of the season.
- 2:34:48Popovich batting right-handed against Cumberland.
- 2:34:50All of the switch batters, two down, bases empty.
- 2:34:54Cumberland's pitch to Popovich is low for a ball, 1-0.
- 2:35:091-0 count.
- 2:35:121-0 pitch. Popovich pops it up.
- 2:35:15Should be it as Goodson moves into foul territory.
- 2:35:18Waits, makes the catch, almost drops it, and that is the final out.
- 2:35:23So here in the ninth, no runs, no hits, no errors, no one left off.
- 2:35:30And the Giants win it by a score of 10-8.
- 2:35:39The final total, the Giants, 10 runs on 13 hits and one error.
- 2:35:50The Cubs, 8 runs on 14 hits and one error.
- 2:35:54The winning pitcher is Don Carrizas, who will be our post-game interview.
- 2:35:58And the losing pitcher is the starter, Ferguson Jenkins.
