Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. And if you're like Brian,
- 0:19particularly if you're watching the video version of this,
- 0:22you're like Brian, you are wearing a beanie.
- 0:24I am wearing a beanie today. It is a very, very, very cold
- 0:29day. And so I had initially planned
- 0:33when I was recording this episode that I might drop in to
- 0:36get a haircut today, but then ended up having to do 1000
- 0:39different things at the church and for my family.
- 0:44And so that did not happen. So that's going to be another
- 0:47day. Not today, but we are in Psalm
- 0:51139 today. Psalm 139, I mentioned at the
- 0:56end of last episode, this is one of the most well known Psalms in
- 1:01all of Scripture, one of the most well known portions in all
- 1:07of Scripture. I am going to just start diving
- 1:11in right now and reading it because if I don't, we could be
- 1:16here for another, you know, 22 episodes like we were in Psalm
- 1:20119. So let's just start right off.
- 1:23The inscription for Psalm 139 says for the choir director a
- 1:27Psalm of David. Yahweh, you have searched me and
- 1:31known me. You know when I sit down and
- 1:35when I stand up. You understand my thoughts from
- 1:38far away. You observe my travels and my
- 1:41rest. You are aware of all my ways.
- 1:44Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it.
- 1:48Yahweh, you haven't circled me. You have placed your hand on me.
- 1:53This wondrous knowledge is beyond me.
- 1:56It is lofty. I am unable to reach it.
- 2:00Where can I go to escape your spirit?
- 2:02Where can I flee from your presence?
- 2:05If I go up to heaven, you are there.
- 2:08If I make my bed and shield, you are there.
- 2:11If I fly on the wings of the dawn and settle down on the
- 2:15western horizon, even there your hand will lead me, Your right
- 2:19hand will hold on to me. If I say surely, the darkness
- 2:23will hide me, and the light around me will be night.
- 2:26Even the darkness is not dark to you.
- 2:29The night shines like the day. Darkness and light are alike to
- 2:34you, for it was you who created my inward parts.
- 2:38You knit me together in my mother's womb.
- 2:41I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously
- 2:46made. Your works are wondrous, and I
- 2:48know this very well. My bones were not hidden from
- 2:52you when I was made in secret, When I was formed in the depths
- 2:56of the earth. Your eyes saw me when I was
- 2:59formless. All my days were written in your
- 3:02book and planned before a single one of them began.
- 3:06God, how precious your thoughts are to me, How vast their sum
- 3:10is. If I counted them, they would
- 3:13outnumber the grains of sand. When I wake up, I am still with
- 3:17you, God, if only you would kill the wicked.
- 3:21You bloodthirsty men, stay away from me who invoke you
- 3:25deceitfully. Your enemies swear by you
- 3:28falsely. Yahweh, don't.
- 3:30I hate those who hate you and detest those who rebel against
- 3:34you. I hate them with extreme hatred.
- 3:36I consider them my enemies. Search me, O God, and know my
- 3:41heart. Test me and know my concerns.
- 3:44See if there is any offensive way in me.
- 3:48Lead me in the everlasting way. So what do we learn from this
- 3:54Psalm? First, in verses one through 6,
- 3:57we see that God knows everything about us.
- 4:02He knows all of our actions. Verse #1 Yahweh, you have
- 4:06searched me and known me. This is the same thing that
- 4:12David says at the end of the Psalm in verse 23.
- 4:15Search me, O God, and know my heart.
- 4:17Test me and know my concerns, my anxieties.
- 4:21He says, see if there is any offensive way in me.
- 4:24Lead me in the everlasting way, if you will.
- 4:27The end of the Psalm echoes the beginning to say, God, you know
- 4:30all about me. You have searched me entirely.
- 4:33Would you show me what you know to be true about me?
- 4:37Like, you know, Brian really is impatient or Brian is super
- 4:43selfish. Brian is, he doesn't listen to
- 4:48other people. Would you show me what you
- 4:53already know to be true about me so that I can walk God's way,
- 4:59not just my own way? That is a scary prayer to pray
- 5:03because very unfortunately, most of the time God will not just
- 5:07drop it into your mind to say here's all of your failures and
- 5:13you will get this totally fixed all on your own.
- 5:16No, most of the time He brings situations in that show us what
- 5:24we are truly like. We're like God, you know, search
- 5:27me, know me, try me. And then God will bring along
- 5:32that sibling that you just can't get along with.
- 5:35He'll bring in a customer that just drives you Batty.
- 5:39He will have you have an argument with your spouse that
- 5:44shows you where your failures truly are.
- 5:46And in those moments, we have to go, oh Lord, thank you for
- 5:52showing me who I truly am, not just who I imagine myself to be,
- 5:57but God, would you please like transform me that I am not this
- 6:02person anymore. So I love that in verse one,
- 6:06that God has searched us and known us entirely.
- 6:08And the fact that he has searched us and known us and yet
- 6:12has not rejected us is such a welcome truth.
- 6:16It's not that God has affection for you.
- 6:20It's not that Jesus died for you because God doesn't know what
- 6:24kind of person you really are. No, my friend, God knows you
- 6:27entirely. He knows the faults that you
- 6:30don't even think are faults. He knows the sins that you
- 6:33possess, that for many of us, we will still have large character
- 6:40flaws at the end of our days, like when we die and we will not
- 6:44realize the depths of our sin. But God realizes the depths of
- 6:49our sin and it doesn't cause Him to run away.
- 6:51It doesn't cause Him to abandon us.
- 6:53What a joy that is. It brings comfort to us that God
- 6:58knows us most intimately, but God doesn't just know us and our
- 7:03character. Verse 2 we read that he knows
- 7:06all of our actions. He says, you know when I sit
- 7:08down and when I stand up, you understand my thoughts from far
- 7:13away. You observe my travels and my
- 7:16rest. You are aware of all my ways.
- 7:19What a thought that I can't even like I I sat down in this chair.
- 7:24I did a whole lot of standing up today.
- 7:26I was doing stuff for music. I was doing stuff for like some
- 7:30church tax form things. I was helping out my wife with
- 7:35an appointment that she had. I spent time with my kids and
- 7:40taught them about dandelions and and trees and seeds and all of
- 7:45that. Every action that I took today
- 7:49my God knows intimately and personally.
- 7:54Like God cares about me. I love, I, I think I can say
- 7:59this truthfully, I love every person that is sitting on the
- 8:04other end of this microphone, this, this camera.
- 8:08If you are watching or listening to Tabernacle talk or you're
- 8:12somehow reading it, I am so thankful for you.
- 8:16I love you. I care about you.
- 8:17I want to be a part of your walk with Jesus and I want to help
- 8:23you out in that. I want to answer any questions
- 8:25that I can. I don't care if you're standing
- 8:28or if you're sitting down. I I don't care when iota.
- 8:32You don't have to tell me and I have no desire to find out if
- 8:37you're sitting down or standing. But God cares, and God knows and
- 8:43man what a intimate knowledge God has of me and of you, that
- 8:50He just loves us and knows and cares about each iota of our
- 8:57life. It's what Jesus says, that even
- 8:59the very hairs of our head are numbered, and while that might
- 9:03be easy for some bald people, that God's work isn't that much
- 9:07harder, that He knows you don't have a whole lot of hairs to to
- 9:12count. It doesn't matter to anyone
- 9:16else. It doesn't even matter to me how
- 9:17many hairs I have on my head, but God cares, and God cares
- 9:22about the things in my life that I don't even care about.
- 9:26And so God loves me deeper than I love myself.
- 9:29And so that means I can trust in him and I can rely on Him to do
- 9:34what is right. But not only does he know like
- 9:37our sitting up, our standing, our, our travels, He understands
- 9:41our thoughts from far away that God knows what is going on In my
- 9:47mind. That is a probably scarier
- 9:51thought for most of us that we go like, OK, I can do a pretty
- 9:55good job with my mouth where I'm not constantly like gossiping or
- 9:59slandering. I, I need to do a better job
- 10:02about not complaining. But like, I can kind of guard my
- 10:07mouth. I can guard my actions.
- 10:08I haven't punched anyone. I haven't stolen anything.
- 10:12I haven't killed anyone. I haven't committed adultery.
- 10:15Like there's all sorts of great things that I abstain from doing
- 10:20with my words or with my actions, but God knows even my
- 10:24thoughts. And that's what Jesus brings it
- 10:27back to in the Sermon on the Mount where he says, all right,
- 10:30you haven't killed anyone. Great.
- 10:32Have you hated someone in your heart?
- 10:35Well, you're guilty of murder because you did the murdering on
- 10:38the inside of you, even if you didn't do it on the outside.
- 10:42Or have you looked at someone with lust?
- 10:45You haven't committed adultery physically, but you committed
- 10:48adultery mentally. And so this is what Jesus brings
- 10:52us back to is our heart, our thoughts.
- 10:58I'll mention this when the Bible talks about like our thoughts or
- 11:02our thinking. It's so often tethers it to our
- 11:06heart like the core of our being.
- 11:09It it doesn't mention like every thought that I think with my
- 11:13mind. That's not how the the ancient
- 11:16peoples of the world understood human anatomy to work.
- 11:20So they talk about the heart as like your center of emotion or
- 11:25being. So just wanted to mention that
- 11:27as well. But God knows our thoughts and
- 11:31God cares about the things that you worry about on the inside or
- 11:35the complaints that you have on the inside that you never
- 11:38vocalize. Maybe difficulties that you're
- 11:41having with another person that because of either the difficulty
- 11:45that you would have in bringing up a problem with someone else
- 11:49that you'd never say anything. Or because you love and treasure
- 11:52the relationship so much that you would never jeopardize it
- 11:56through through mentioning like a criticism or something of the
- 12:00other person. Like God knows everything that's
- 12:03going on in your mind and in your thoughts, and that can be a
- 12:09comfort to you. It is here, intended as a
- 12:12comfort, that God knows everything going on on in your
- 12:16mind, every worry, every anxiety, every concern, and He
- 12:20cares about it. When we pray to Him, He's not
- 12:24learning about our concerns for the first time.
- 12:27When we pray, we are acknowledging that God is
- 12:31sovereign. He is in control over everything
- 12:35that brings us worry. So if you will, prayer is more
- 12:39an act of worship. It's not an act.
- 12:42Oh, here, let me I, I think I can phrase this a little better.
- 12:46Prayer is an act of adoration. It is not an act of information
- 12:52to God. It's an act of adoration of God,
- 12:56not an act of information for God.
- 12:59And I love, I love that thought. Verse #3 You observe my travels
- 13:04and my rest. God cares when you're on
- 13:07vacation and when you're not. God cares when you're on your
- 13:10commute, and God cares when you are back at the back at the work
- 13:16site. He cares when you're back at
- 13:17home. He cares about both your travels
- 13:20and your rest. He is aware of all of our ways.
- 13:22Verse #4 through 6 Before a word is on my tongue, You know all
- 13:28about it. Yahweh, what a thought.
- 13:31God knows the words that we are going to say before we even say
- 13:37them, when it's just in our mind, before it exits our mouth.
- 13:42For some of us, that's a much, you know, shorter distance.
- 13:44The instant you think of something, it starts going out.
- 13:48But God knows what we are going to say.
- 13:53If God knows it, I think part of us asking for the Lord to search
- 13:58us and know us and and try us and show us who we really are in
- 14:03the sight of God. Pardon me.
- 14:06I think that should prompt us to be equally cognizant and aware
- 14:16of the words that we speak. Like God knows what we're going
- 14:19to say, so shouldn't we care about what we're going to say as
- 14:23well? Verses 5 and 6, you have
- 14:25encircled me. You have placed your hand on me.
- 14:30This wondrous knowledge is beyond me.
- 14:32It is lofty. I am unable to reach it.
- 14:36Hear God encircling us. This is I am surrounding you to
- 14:41protect you. This placing his hand on us is
- 14:45blessing. It's if perhaps my son, if he's
- 14:50scared about something, if I put my hand on him, it's, it's to
- 14:53reassure him. It's to let him know you can do
- 14:56this. You're going to be OK.
- 14:57I'm in this with you. And God has both encircled us,
- 15:01protecting us, and he has put his hand on us, emphasizing his
- 15:05care and his presence. I echo with David.
- 15:09This wondrous knowledge is beyond me.
- 15:10I can't understand how God, the infinite Creator, the one who
- 15:16upholds all of the universe by his power and his might, that he
- 15:21cares about Brian, that he protects me, that his presence
- 15:27is with me even right now. What a wonder that that is.
- 15:33Verses 7 through 12, David says there's nowhere that I can go
- 15:37that I can escape the presence that the Spirit, the breath of
- 15:41God that has gone out to all creation generally that there's
- 15:46nowhere you can go where God's presence is not as well as now
- 15:51for us as New Testament believers permanently and dwelt
- 15:54by the Spirit. This is so much more true says
- 15:58where can I go to escape your spirit?
- 16:01Where can I flee from your presence?
- 16:03If I go up to heaven, you are there, God.
- 16:05If I go into the skies, God's in the skies like Jesus is the one
- 16:09that ascended into heaven says if I go into the skies, you are
- 16:13there. If I make my bed in Sheol in the
- 16:16grave, you are there. Especially now as Jesus has
- 16:21illuminated more of the path of what if you will, the afterlife
- 16:26looks like we know that when we die, to be absent from the body
- 16:29is to be present with the Lord. If you know Jesus as your
- 16:32Savior. Verse #9 If I fly on the wings
- 16:37of the dawn and settle down on the western horizon.
- 16:40So basically if I start off where the sun rises in the
- 16:44morning and I go all the way to where it sets, He says even
- 16:48there your hand will lead me, Your right hand will hold on to
- 16:51me. God, I can go furthest east to
- 16:54West and you are still there. If I say surely the darkness
- 17:00will hide me and the light around me will be night.
- 17:02He says God can I like hide from you at night time?
- 17:04He says even the darkness is not dark to you.
- 17:08The night shines like the day. Darkness and light are alike to
- 17:13you. Says it makes no difference to
- 17:15God. Like God doesn't have to have a
- 17:17specific amount of photons in a place for him to be able to see.
- 17:22Like he knows everything that happens everywhere.
- 17:26He knows what happens in the light just as much as he knows
- 17:28what happens in the dark. There is nowhere we can go,
- 17:32nowhere we could run to. There is no grave.
- 17:36There is no rocket ship that we could take that would take us
- 17:38away from the presence of God. And then I love verses 13 and
- 17:4314. Actually 13 through 16.
- 17:47It was you who created my inward parts.
- 17:50You knit me together in my mother's womb.
- 17:54I will praise you because I've been remarkably and wondrously
- 17:58made. Your works are wondrous, and I
- 18:00know this very well. This is one of the precious
- 18:05truths of Scripture that we would read here.
- 18:07We would read about John the Baptist.
- 18:10We would read about even the prophet Jeremiah, that God cares
- 18:15about life within the womb, and specifically that life does
- 18:20begin inside of the womb, and that God is the one that is
- 18:25putting us together. Our creation is not merely by
- 18:30human generation. It is not merely something that
- 18:36is done kind of automatically. And so you can interrupt the
- 18:40process, and that's fine. No, my friend, God himself is
- 18:45the one that created you. Every iota of you, all of your
- 18:50bones, your eye, all of your like Sinews is kind of an older
- 18:57word for it. That would mean you know your
- 19:00your tendons, your ligaments, your organs, everything was put
- 19:03together, yes, by your parents and by the DNA that you received
- 19:07from them. But the fact that you exist,
- 19:11that you look the way you do, that you have, the personality
- 19:15that you do, that you have, maybe the health difficulties
- 19:18that you do, is because God put you together in a unique way
- 19:24that He has put no one else together exactly like you.
- 19:28If you're a twin or triplet or quadruplet, then we can have
- 19:31that discussion. But I don't think most of you
- 19:33are that. But you are totally unique and
- 19:37that is because God himself put you together.
- 19:41Even the natural occurrences of life are not untouched by our
- 19:46God working. And so This is why as Christians
- 19:51we believe in what would be called pro-life, that someone
- 19:56should never terminate, especially electively terminate
- 20:02a pregnancy, have an abortion. We would view that to be a
- 20:06taking of a life that God himself is creating.
- 20:11Now, there are many questions and concerns.
- 20:14Sometimes when there's health difficulties and things like
- 20:17that, that is a, if you will, that's a separate discussion.
- 20:21That's a kind of a triage thing of all right, what can we do?
- 20:25Who can we save? Can we save everyone?
- 20:27Can we only save one person? What all will go into this?
- 20:31And that is a different kind of conversation, one that frankly
- 20:36often requires understanding, patience, prayer, determination
- 20:42of God. What do you want in this
- 20:45situation? How much do we go by like sight
- 20:49and assumption? And what, what do we think is
- 20:53possible versus OK, I think God might work in this way or in
- 20:57that way. And so I'm going to choose, even
- 20:59though there's a risk here, I'm still going to choose to pursue
- 21:04life and I'm going to try. And if you will roll the dice
- 21:08for both myself and my child in this moment, because I believe
- 21:14that God will will take us through there, that's a whole
- 21:17different kind of conversation. That is not the main opposition
- 21:23of Christians. Christians would say there
- 21:26should never be a time where we just say, oh, there's a baby.
- 21:29I don't want the baby I'm going to, I'm going to terminate this
- 21:33pregnancy. We from these verses and many
- 21:38other in scripture would view life being formed in the womb as
- 21:42sacred, placed there by God himself that He is knitting and
- 21:46so it has inherent worth and value.
- 21:50If you have any questions on that, please let me know.
- 21:55Given the sensitivity of the topic, feel free to message me.
- 21:59Feel free to text or call me if you happen to have my number.
- 22:02If you need that, let me know. Would love to have a further
- 22:04conversation with you about that.
- 22:08But the most important thing is God is the giver of life and so
- 22:11God should be the only one that takes life.
- 22:14We should never take that into our own hands as created beings.
- 22:20Verse #17 God, how precious your thoughts are to me, how fast
- 22:24their sum is. If I counted them, they would
- 22:26outnumber the grains of sand. When I wake up, I am still with
- 22:32you. God, you have so many thoughts.
- 22:36You have so many if you will even cares about me.
- 22:40Like you know every iota of my life.
- 22:43You know every iota of who I am as a person, of the words that
- 22:47are that I haven't even spoken yet.
- 22:51And so God, this is a precious thing to me.
- 22:53This is something that I value because you know me better than
- 22:57I know me. And so God, thank you that when
- 22:59I go to sleep, you're there. When I wake up, you're still
- 23:02there with me. Verse 19, verses 19 through 22,
- 23:07here's another implication. This is God, You know everything
- 23:11about me, and God, you see the wickedness, the violence, the
- 23:16desire to kill and to harm that is present in other people.
- 23:21And God, you know that my desire is not to go along with them.
- 23:24I don't want to be a violent person.
- 23:26I don't want to be one that inflicts harm on other human
- 23:29beings. And God, for these people that
- 23:31are bloodthirsty, you know that I hate them, especially as
- 23:35they're trying to bring God's name into their violence and
- 23:39their bloodthirstiness. That David says this is totally
- 23:42against the way that God would have them to live.
- 23:45And so Lord like, would you they're seeking to kill other
- 23:49people, God, would you kill them?
- 23:51Would you bring back onto them what they are inflicting onto
- 23:56others? If you have any questions about
- 24:00that, look back at Psalm 137 and some other Psalms that have also
- 24:04dealt with this thought process of God.
- 24:07You be the just one. You are the one that is worthy
- 24:10to take away lives. I'm not saying God help me to
- 24:13destroy all of these people. David says, God, you deal with
- 24:17these people as you know what is right and what is fit.
- 24:20And then the Psalm ends with this.
- 24:22Search me God, and know my heart.
- 24:24Test me and know my concerns. See if there's any offensive way
- 24:29in me and lead me in the everlasting way.
- 24:33This word offensive can also mean idolatrous.
- 24:37God, is there something I'm putting in front of you?
- 24:40God, you have all of me laid in front of you, and you care care
- 24:44about every iota of my existence.
- 24:47God, do I care about you? Do I care about your word and
- 24:51your character and your spirit and your presence and your
- 24:55commands and all of that? Like, do I care about you nearly
- 25:00as much as you care about me? That just makes sense.
- 25:04It is reciprocal that if God has so loved us, then we ought to
- 25:09love God as well. If God knows everything about
- 25:13you, then shouldn't you and I try to know everything that we
- 25:17possibly can about God? Frankly, that's one of the
- 25:21reasons that I'm a pastor is that I want to devote my life to
- 25:25know God more and to help other people get to know God more.
- 25:31Thank you for tuning into this episode.
- 25:33Again, if you have any questions in particular as it relates to
- 25:38abortion, pregnancy, termination, health things, any
- 25:42of that, I would love to have a conversation with you.
- 25:45If I misspoken anyway and you're like, wait a second, did Brian
- 25:50just say this or did he mean this?
- 25:52Don't go tattling to other people.
- 25:54Come talk to me. I, I would love to set the
- 25:57record straight if I said anything of this, but would love
- 26:00to have a conversation with you. Frankly, it's something that our
- 26:04nation desperately needs is a greater recognition of how God
- 26:09thinks about babies, really about children in in general,
- 26:14that God has a love for children that we do not often share, but
- 26:17that we ought to. Thank you for tuning in.
- 26:21Have a great day.
