- 0:00Chapter twenty. The way, the best of ways, is the eightfold,
- 0:08the best of truths, the four words, the best of virtues, passionlessness,
- 0:15the best of men. He who has eyes to see this is the
- 0:22way. There is no other that leads to the purifying of intelligence. Go
- 0:29on this way. Everything else is the deceit of Mara, the tempter.
- 0:36If you go on this way, you will make an end of pain.
- 0:41The way was preached by me when I had understood the removal of the thorns
- 0:47in the flesh. You yourself must make an effort the Totargetas Buddhas are only
- 0:57preachers. The thoughtful who enter the way are freed from the bondage of Marah.
- 1:06All created things perish. He who knows this and sees this becomes passive
- 1:12in pain. This is the way to purity. All created things are grief
- 1:22and pain. He who knows this and sees this becomes passive in pain.
- 1:30This is the way that leads to purity. All forms are unreal. He
- 1:38who knows and sees this becomes passive in pain. This is the way that
- 1:44leads to purity. He who does not rouse himself when it is time to
- 1:51rise, who though young and strong, is full of sloth, whose will
- 1:57and thought are wea that lazy and idle man will never find the way to
- 2:05knowledge. Watching his speech well restrained in mind, Let a man never commit
- 2:15any wrong with his body. Let a man but keep these three roads of
- 2:22action clear, and he will achieve the way which is taught by the wise.
- 2:30Through zeal. Knowledge is gotten. Through lack of zeal, knowledge is
- 2:37lost. Let a man who knows this double path of gain and loss thus
- 2:44place himself that knowledge may grow. Cut down the whole forest of lust,
- 2:53not a tree. Only danger comes out of the forest of lust. When
- 3:00you have cut down both the forest of lust and its undergrowth, then pictures,
- 3:07you will be rid of the forest and free. So long as the
- 3:14love of man towards women, even the smallest, is not destroyed, so
- 3:21long is his mind in bondage, as the cough that drinks milk is to
- 3:27its mother. Cut out the love of self like an autumn lotus. With
- 3:34thy hand, cherish the road of peace Nirvana has been shown by Sugata Buddha.
- 3:45Here I shall dwell in the rain, here in winter and summer.
- 3:51Thus the fool meditates and does not think of his death. Death comes and
- 3:58carries off that man praised for his children and flocks, his mind distracted as
- 4:04a flood carries off a sleeping village. Sons are no help, nor a
- 4:12father, nor relations. There is no help from kinsfolk for one whom death
- 4:18has seized. A wise and good man who knows the meaning of this should
- 4:28quickly clear the way that leads to Nirvana. End of chapter twenty
