Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Frontline Static, we will get to hear interviews with
- 0:02some of my clients journeys of getting into flight and how they
- 0:05utilize coaching to help them create success of getting hired
- 0:08with less confusion and more ease.
- 0:10Make your dream a reality of getting into flight.
- 0:12Listen in as you hear some of the stories of the people
- 0:14getting there and come join the flight Prep group.
- 0:16Welcome to episode 113 of How to become a Flight Nurse podcast.
- 0:20I wanted to continue on the conversation of the topic that
- 0:22we talked about this week in the Flight Prep Academy because I
- 0:26thought it was just such an important topic that I've heard
- 0:30a lot of people bring up to me and ask me.
- 0:32And so I think for you guys as listeners, it's a good one to
- 0:36just kind of talk about right now.
- 0:39I have to be honest with you, doing these episodes has been
- 0:42something really new for me. I have to get out of my comfort
- 0:45zone. It's been really weird to not
- 0:48see your faces as normally when I'm coaching or I'm teaching or
- 0:51I'm talking to someone about the process of getting into flight,
- 0:54I can see their face. But I just want you to imagine
- 0:58as I'm going to to right now, that we're just sitting at a
- 1:00table having a conversation with each other one-on-one.
- 1:04So whether you're listening in your car or you're going for a
- 1:07walk or a run or you're just getting off shift, I want you to
- 1:11think about we're just sitting across the table from each other
- 1:15having a conversation about this.
- 1:17So one thing that I've been asked a lot lately is what's the
- 1:22easiest way to get to flight? But not from the point of view
- 1:26of what does it take to get to flight, What are the
- 1:29requirements? Because those are easy.
- 1:31Those are the same. It's three years ER or ICU
- 1:35experience and that's it. And that's pretty normal for
- 1:38most of the companies in the United States.
- 1:40But the way that I get asked it is what's the most possible
- 1:45easiest way, simple for me to get there.
- 1:49That isn't going to take a lot of work.
- 1:51And that's how I'm being asked that.
- 1:54And I just want to talk about this for a second, because I
- 1:58think that people don't want it to be hard.
- 2:03They think it's supposed to be easy and they want to take the
- 2:07easiest route to get there. And, and I, and I want to say
- 2:11this out of the kindness of my heart, but if you're that person
- 2:15who wants the easiest route to get there, flight nursing is not
- 2:17for you because there is nothing about flight that is easy.
- 2:22And I want to just let you guys know that it is supposed to be
- 2:27hard. Getting to flight isn't
- 2:30something that everybody does because it is hard.
- 2:34And I want to give you a couple pointers on this and I'm going
- 2:38to bring this up again in the episode, but it's really about
- 2:42the person that you're becoming in the process and in the
- 2:46journey. It's about growing the capacity
- 2:48to do hard things and then reaching beyond that to become
- 2:52the person, the clinician, the, the person you're supposed to be
- 3:00in this world. And that's really, it's about
- 3:03the journey. It's about the process of
- 3:04getting there and becoming that person.
- 3:06So it is supposed to be hard. And the other, the second part
- 3:09of this that I want to reiterate that I'm going to talk about
- 3:12more is and also you can do hard things.
- 3:17I want to start out by saying that the story of how you get to
- 3:22flight is exactly the way it is supposed to be.
- 3:27And I want to say that because I hear a lot of people say I'm too
- 3:31old, I have too many kids, now's not the right time.
- 3:36They give me a lot of excuses that their brain offers them.
- 3:39But I want to offer you this, that you were supposed to get
- 3:44there with the subset of circumstances that you have.
- 3:48And those circumstances and those obstacles will always be
- 3:52there. And they might be different for
- 3:54you than they might be for someone else.
- 3:55So for example, for me, when I was going through a nursing
- 3:58school, I had three kids under the age of 2 and that was a
- 4:00hardship for me. And that continued to be because
- 4:04I had to work full time while I was in nursing school.
- 4:06But it also grew me into a clinician who knew how to have
- 4:10really good time management because I had to.
- 4:13And those subset of circumstances were my obstacles
- 4:17and and maybe someone else doesn't have those.
- 4:20Maybe it's something different for someone else.
- 4:23Maybe they are going through financial hardships or maybe
- 4:29it's really hard for them to study, but that's their
- 4:31obstacle. So I want you to know each and
- 4:33every single person as they're trying to create this journey of
- 4:37themselves getting to flight is facing an obstacle.
- 4:40Now. The people who get there are the
- 4:42people who are willing to take action anyway.
- 4:46The people who are willing to have these circumstances, these
- 4:49obstacles, these hurdles in their life and continue on
- 4:52anyway. This is why not everybody at
- 4:55three years of ERICU know is a flight nurse because not
- 4:58everybody can overcome that in their mind.
- 5:00But I do want to, I do want to offer you that if you are the
- 5:04person who understands that, who gets that and who is willing to
- 5:08take action anyway beyond the obstacles, you will get there.
- 5:12And so I just want to reiterate that this story of exactly where
- 5:18you are in exact moment, in exact timetable, at the exact
- 5:23age you are with the exact amount of children that you
- 5:25have. If this is your second or your
- 5:27third or your 4th career, that this is exactly your journey of
- 5:32getting to flight. And it's exactly the way it was
- 5:35supposed to be for you. I want to start out with talking
- 5:41more about this is 100% about the person that you're becoming
- 5:44in the process because people want to rush that people just
- 5:48want to get to the end result. And I know that by the way that
- 5:50they asked me, they're like, what's the simplest, easiest,
- 5:52quickest way to get there? And I tell them, it's not
- 5:55supposed to be simple. It's not supposed to be easy.
- 5:58It is supposed to be hard. But if you are up for that
- 6:01challenge, you will be a different person at the other
- 6:04side of this. And I want you to know that it
- 6:08is going to require you to put in the work to get there, but
- 6:11you can do it. It's supposed to be hard for two
- 6:15reasons. One, it's about the journey and
- 6:19the person that you become in the process, The adversity you
- 6:23learn to face and what you learn about yourself because that is
- 6:28the person who will be so good as a flight nurse or so good as
- 6:33a flight medic. I say time and time again to the
- 6:36people inside the flight Prep Academy, the problems that you
- 6:39are facing right now, when you get hired, you will face those
- 6:44exact same subset of problems. And you don't want to rush this
- 6:47because when you, if you can learn now the tools to bring
- 6:52yourself out of it and to work through that obstacle, then when
- 6:55you get into flight and you have the exact same problems, you
- 6:58will have those tools readily available for you and your tool
- 7:01belt. You'll know exactly what to do
- 7:04because now these obstacles are going to be 10X.
- 7:06So I want to give you an example.
- 7:09I had a client who I only wanted to work for, excuse me, one
- 7:14flight company. And so that gave her a lot of
- 7:18obstacles and it wasn't impossible.
- 7:20It just made it a lot more difficult.
- 7:21If you've heard of what I've talked to you about getting to
- 7:23flight in the past, I really it it increases your chances of
- 7:27getting hired when you're willing to date a bunch of
- 7:29companies. Well, she only wanted to date
- 7:30and and work and quote UN quote bury one company.
- 7:34So we worked the one company that she wanted to work.
- 7:36And in the process, it created a lot of doubt about herself, a
- 7:40doubt about who she was, about her value, about her worth when
- 7:45she got told no a couple times and she had to keep going at it
- 7:48and going at it and going at it with the same company.
- 7:51And I told her, don't speed up this process of trying to get
- 7:54rid of the doubt. Don't speed it up this process
- 7:56of trying to get rid of the imposter syndrome.
- 7:58Allow it to be there. Allow yourself to experience it.
- 8:01Allow yourself to work through it and get wisdom through it and
- 8:05process and feel those emotions. Because if this is your obstacle
- 8:10right now, once you get into flight nursing, this is going to
- 8:13be your same obstacle. And lo and behold, she got hired
- 8:17with this one company. And as she started to make the
- 8:21transition into the from the offer to the orientation and
- 8:25into the role, she started to have extreme imposter syndrome.
- 8:30And what was so good about this is that she had already created
- 8:34now a process for herself to work through that, to have the
- 8:38imposter syndrome, to have the doubt and still show up
- 8:41confidently. And so This is why the people
- 8:45inside the flight Prep Academy are doing so well in their
- 8:47transition after their flight, right?
- 8:49Is often times you guys are only thinking about getting hired.
- 8:51But as your coach, I'm most concerned about how well you're
- 8:56going to do afterwards. Because I just saw so many
- 8:58people get hired in flight and then quit because they, they
- 9:05didn't understand that the work really began afterwards.
- 9:08And so I, I want to offer you don't rush these obstacles that
- 9:12you're having because this is going to help you So clearly
- 9:16afterwards be able to have the tools in your tool belt to be
- 9:20able to grab them and do really well afterwards.
- 9:26So I want to offer you this second part.
- 9:32No, it's not going to be easy. I'm not going to sugarcoat that.
- 9:36But here's the kicker. You can handle the hard.
- 9:41I'm going to say that again, you can handle the hard.
- 9:45You are already the person who's overcome the hard and you will
- 9:50continue every single time you do to grow the capacity to be
- 9:53the person who can handle more and more and more.
- 9:56But you have to be willing to put yourself in those hard
- 9:58moments so that you can grow that capability, You can grow
- 10:02that capacity. I want to give you like a
- 10:05personal example because sometimes it's easier as you
- 10:07like, step away from examples of yourself.
- 10:10I went through a lot of childhood trauma.
- 10:12I faced a lot of adversity with alcohol and with alcohol abuse
- 10:21inside my family. And, and I, I realized that this
- 10:25childhood trauma and going through nursing school, it being
- 10:31my second career and having three young kids and being older
- 10:36going through that was the thing that really helped me overcome.
- 10:42Because I knew what it was like to work full time in nursing
- 10:46school and do nursing school at the same time and have basically
- 10:512 full time jobs and study all night during the night.
- 10:55And because I knew what it was like to work hard, I didn't
- 11:01expect it to be easy. I also grew the capacity to
- 11:05become the person who didn't fear it.
- 11:09Yeah, it was uncomfortable and yeah, I was afraid, but I didn't
- 11:13fear that I would overcome it. And so you got to be willing to
- 11:17push play though. You got to be willing to grow
- 11:20yourself. I really have this belief that
- 11:23we are not stagnant creatures As human beings.
- 11:28We can be feel burnt out and we can feel unfulfilled if we are
- 11:32not willing to push ourselves to the hard, if we're not willing
- 11:35to grow. And I really think that this
- 11:38flight goal really requires people who are willing to do the
- 11:45hard and requires people who are willing to become the person who
- 11:51continues to grow into that and pushes themselves, who's willing
- 11:55to say, hey, I don't feel fulfilled.
- 11:57It's time for me to grow. And I know it's going to be
- 11:59uncomfortable. I know I'm going to have fear
- 12:01and I'm going to keep at it. Decide that you want flight now,
- 12:05start towards it now, not later, not tomorrow, not next month,
- 12:11not next year. I hear that so many from people,
- 12:13I they say, Oh well, I'm going to start this next month.
- 12:15I'm going to start this next year.
- 12:17I'm going to start this in a couple years.
- 12:19If you want flight, it's about becoming the person in the
- 12:23process and becoming the person in their process requires you to
- 12:27start as soon as you know you want it.
- 12:30I knew I wanted it in nursing school and it took me the whole
- 12:344 years to become that person. And because I dedicated myself
- 12:38to this goal from day one, I really feel like that's what
- 12:42created the longevity of me flying for so long.
- 12:45I flew for seven years and a lot of flight nurses don't last that
- 12:48long because they don't they don't work on becoming the
- 12:51person in the process and then when they get there, they
- 12:54realize how hard it is. This is what sets people apart.
- 12:59This is what sets apart. The people who actually get it
- 13:02are the ones who push play. The ones who push play now.
- 13:05The ones who start even though they have fear.
- 13:07The ones who start even though they have doubt, The ones who
- 13:10start even though their brain offers them a lot of
- 13:12circumstances and a lot of obstacles.
- 13:14A lot of people want it, but not everyone is willing to become
- 13:18the person in the process. They want the result, but they
- 13:21don't want to become the person who gets the result.
- 13:24So I want to offer you, if you want flight, become the person
- 13:28it takes to get it. It will not be easy, it will be
- 13:32hard, but you can handle the hard it takes Believing in
- 13:36yourself before you have the result.
- 13:38Meaning a lot of people wait to have confidence until they get
- 13:41the result or get the thing that they're working towards.
- 13:44But I really teach you inside my program to grow the confidence
- 13:47before you have the result, to grow the belief and the mindset
- 13:51in yourself because you are allowed to have confidence
- 13:54before you get there. And just while you did in
- 13:57nursing school, how you carried that belief and confidence into
- 14:00yourself that you were going to get through it before you did,
- 14:02just like you did when you started out in critical care and
- 14:04you had no idea what kind of critical care nurse you were
- 14:07going to be. That's the belief and confidence
- 14:09you want to learn to carry as you're going into this next
- 14:12level of your life. I also want to offer you it
- 14:16takes a mentor. I had a mentor every step of the
- 14:18way and everything I did. I had a mentor in nursing
- 14:20school, I had a mentor in the ICU, and then I had a mentor as
- 14:23a flight nurse. I want to be your mentor.
- 14:25I see the common mistakes that people make as they're trying to
- 14:29get into flight that's taking them longer, having them quit
- 14:31altogether. And then I know the common
- 14:33mistakes that people make after they get hired that have them
- 14:37quit before they can even transition and have them
- 14:40burnout. And so I want to be your mentor
- 14:42because I want to be able to prevent people from making those
- 14:45same mistakes so that they can fly and create success for
- 14:48themselves for the longevity of however long they want to have
- 14:50this career. Most people go to this career
- 14:53because they want to retire in it.
- 14:54And that's definitely possible for you, but it's in the
- 14:57becoming, it's in the process. The other thing that I want to
- 15:00offer you is invest in yourself. I think as healthcare workers,
- 15:04first responders, we give a lot of ourselves and we forget to
- 15:07take care of ourselves. We forget to invest in ourselves
- 15:10somewhere down the line. We spent a ton of money on
- 15:12nursing school, on resources, on certs, but we don't spend time
- 15:18investing in our mindset, investing in our thoughts and
- 15:25our feelings. And I'm going to tell you, this
- 15:28was the biggest game changer for me when I invested in a coach.
- 15:32It really allowed me to work at the highest level of being a
- 15:35clinician that's required of you and the hardest, most
- 15:38pressurized days and process all of the emotions.
- 15:43There's a lot of mental work, mental health that goes along
- 15:46with this job even before you get into flight.
- 15:48And I just want to offer you invest in your mindset, invest
- 15:53in your confidence in your critical thinking.
- 15:54Invest in a coach. And if that's not me, that's OK,
- 15:58but invest in the person that you trust to help you with that
- 16:02because this, this will be a game changer in you and really
- 16:06being able to play big and play out and become the clinician
- 16:10that you want to be. This will also help you not to
- 16:12hustle and overwork. So many people get burnt out in
- 16:15this career, both in nursing and in flight nursing.
- 16:18And I really in my programs, want to teach you how to do this
- 16:24in a simplified way, without hustling, without overworking,
- 16:27with making this career move work for you and your family.
- 16:32Be willing to become the person who does the hard, who grows the
- 16:36capacity and then pushes even beyond that, but not in a hustle
- 16:40way. I promise you, you will be so
- 16:44proud of yourself in doing that. This is a person who's needed in
- 16:48flight. Because when push comes to
- 16:51shove, if you do this now, you will be ready and you will have
- 16:57lots of moments in flight where you will feel the pressure.
- 17:00Well, you will have to make the hard decisions where you will
- 17:03have fear, where you will push up the ceiling and the capacity
- 17:08of what you think that you're capable of.
- 17:10And you will be asked to do things that you have never done
- 17:13before. And you will be successful.
- 17:15And so learning that process, how to do that now is what is
- 17:20going to get you there. If you know that flight nursing
- 17:23and flight paramedicine is for you, I, I want to be your coach.
- 17:26I want to be your mentor. I am helping people cut their
- 17:29time, literally some of them and half of getting to flight.
- 17:33I'm going to help you cut out the fluff and I'm going to help
- 17:35you do it without hustling and overworking.
- 17:38I'm not only going to help you get hired no matter where you're
- 17:40starting by mapping out your plan, but I'm going to create
- 17:43success for you now for afterwards, for the longevity of
- 17:46however long you want to fly. If you know flight nursing or
- 17:49flight paramedicine is for you, come join us inside.
- 17:52That's it for this week. Know you guys that it's hard,
- 17:55but you can handle the hard. We'll see you guys next week.
