In a high-stakes confrontation that ended in tragedy, Reno County prosecutors have ruled that Hutchinson police officers acted lawfully when they fired ten shots during a June 7 beer theft investigation. After finding Jonathan Lawrence with a weapon and refusing to comply, officers used tasers and ultimately lethal force after he regrabbed the gun and pointed it at them. The DA’s office concluded the officers had a reasonable belief they were in imminent danger, citing Kansas self-defense laws — and officially cleared them of wrongdoing.
